There were only a few times in her life Lena had felt true fear. Not the fear when someone makes you jump or when something falls off a shelf in the middle of the night. It ran deeper than that. The first time she felt it was when she was lined up to be executed (though if you asked her she’d tell you she wasn’t scared). The second time was when Pierre was bleeding out in the warehouse over in California, life disappearing from his eyes with every second that passed. Now, their son is missing. She had bitten all her fingernails down to the bone with stress. Standing in the window of the apartment offered to them by one of Pierre’s vampire friends, watching everyone go about their daily business below, hoping she’d catch a glimpse of Baxter. Sometimes she’d see a male with brown hair walk past and her heart would skip a beat thinking it was him. It never was though. Thankfully Pierre didn’t need much sleep so she didn’t have to worry about disturbing him every hour when she climbed out of bed to pace the living room. Back and forth as she nibbled on her raw fingers. At first, her husband told her not to worry, their son was just busy enjoying ‘college life’, but concern started to set in with him after a few days. It was unlike Baxter to be completely uncontactable, knowing full well his mom would be upset if he didn’t text her at least once a day to say he was okay. The phone calls had stopped dialling out now though. Straight through to voicemail. There were only so many voicemails she could leave for him before Pierre slipped the phone out of her hands. They couldn’t even call the cops without drawing attention to themselves. Questions after questions would be asked to the couple. Pierre insisted on bringing breakfast to the room for her, reminding her she had to eat. She couldn’t survive on an empty stomach like him, but how was she supposed to eat at a time like this? One of them needed to remain rational through all this, and that role had clearly been allocated to Pierre. Insisted they would find their son, even if it meant tearing this town apart. But Mal. What if Mal got to Baxter first? She should have gone after that slimy liar sooner instead of living the high life in Miami. She had her face pressed against that window again. Fourth day in a row. The glass cool against her forehead as she watched the locals. Lena pulled her head away from the window as the door clicked open. The smell of fresh bagels entered the apartment along with her husband. A smell she would usually embrace, but this time it was turning her stomach over. “Did you ask the person at the shop? If they’ve seen Baxter? Did you show them a photo?” Her line of questioning came out more demanding than she meant. She moved away from the window, towards Pierre. “Merci” Her voice softer, a smile as she leaned forward and gave Pierre a gentle peck on the cheek. PIERRE BAUDELAIRE

━ moral compromise has its privileges ━ WORRIED WAS AN UNDERSTATEMENT. Pierre felt terrified every time he rolled out of bed, though he couldn’t imagine what Lena must feel. Each night she had to sleep and dream of their son, then awake to the reality that he was gone. Pierre did not sleep. Instead, he laid in bed beside her and watched over his wife, his coeur. She and Baxter were his life, and now it had been sliced in half, leaving an empty gap with the disappearance of their son. Pierre tried to soothe her despite his own heartache, though nothing worked━he knew that already. And yet, there was little to do but be there for Lena as well as he could.
He tried to do things for her now, doing chores around the house so she wouldn’t have to worry about them, fretful that she’d overdo trying to get her mind off Baxter. They were looking, and he had to stay positive, but if Pierre found out that Mal had laid a finger on their boy…
No. He had to calm himself otherwise he’d tear apart the Grill, and Pierre was here to get Lena’s breakfast. She needed something otherwise she’d forget, and it was his job to take care of her━of them. It was the feeling of failure that weighed him down most.
“Any word on your son?”
Pierre’s head snapped up from the third fruitless check of his phone. It hadn’t buzzed or dinged, he just checked it obsessively now. Alarm faded from his expression when he met the waitress’s concerned eyes. He’d already shown her Baxter’s photo, and she asked if he wanted it posted on their bulletin board. Kind people were not in short supply in this world, but it’d been a long time since Pierre had experienced the unique warmth of townsfolk. Big cities brought business, and that’s where they frequented.
But this ‘small town’ had swallowed their boy whole.
“No.” Pierre tried to smile, voice tight. “Not yet.”
“Well, we’re all keeping an eye out, and people always ask about the photo. I’m sure you’ll find him soon.”
She plopped his bag on the counter, filled with the breakfast he’d ordered, and Pierre thanked her before returning to Lena.
Like they had with the waitress, Pierre’s eyes jumped up, though this time, he was far more surprised and worried than alarmed. “Yes, mon amour, they put up his photo the other day.” Frowning, Pierre wished he’d never see this sort of grief on Lena’s face ever again. Her beautiful features were bogged down by it. Pierre wasn’t sure if he could feel pain worse than this, and now he wondered how long his heart would be able to bear this weight.
‘Merci.’
When she came to him, Pierre gave her a weak, half-smile, dark eyes following Lena closely. “Jamais,” He mumbled, lifting the bag to hold it between them, trying to force it into her hands while his other arm slipped around her waist. “We’ll find him,” Pierre wondered when his reassurances would no longer be enough, and thought that maybe action━suggestions for them, at least━would be better than empty words that did nothing to ease her pain. “We could go to the college again? Pass out more flyers?” At the very least, it would fill another day with activities.

One day she would need someone. At least that's what his mom told her when she turned her nose up at relationships and marriage. Lena didn’t like the idea of having someone else in her life. A person who sees every single part of her, even the most vulnerable. Mako almost got there, but there were still parts of her that she didn’t expose to him. She lied to him about her family when she was born and even what part of China she was from. Slowly she was building up the courage to tell him but he was snatched away from her because she took the plunge. But with Pierre it was different. They weren’t just a married couple, they were a team. Everything they did they did for one another and Baxter. She could be vulnerable in front of him, allowing him to comfort her as she cries for their son. She had truly let him in, filling her heart with love every time she looked at him. It was crazy. As a young girl, she watched her parents fawn over one another. Her dad was willing to give up everything he had to spend centuries with his wife, but Lena could never imagine having that with someone. Then Pierre came into her life. Slowly peeling back each layer of her exterior until he found the woman that lurked beneath. Often she joked about how he fell in love with a woman who was literally telling him to leave her shop. She hated it when he picked things up but didn’t buy them. Lena would rush from behind her counter, muttering to him in Chinese as she rearranged whatever he had touched. He wore a smile the whole time, admiring her as she spoke in her native tongue. Calling him a silly French man. It wasn’t her intention to launch straight into questioning with her husband. Of course, he’d shown the picture of Baxter, of course, asked the person at the store. They were both trying to remain strong for one another. God, she was trying so hard. Pierre’s words brought a small smile to her face. They’d find him. The couple had decades ahead of them to carry on searching and they wouldn’t rest until they found their son. She took the bag from his hands, rummaging inside before pulling a croissant out. “Yes, we can head down there… maybe you compel them to tell the truth because these students… I don’t know, maybe they lie… maybe they know something and they too scared to tell us” Maybe this, maybe not. She hated not knowing. Lena sighed, bringing the croissant up to take a bite. It was a struggle to swallow the dry food, “Not enough salt” She commented quietly before taking another bite. She swallowed again, this time the food going down easier as her stomach reminded her that she was in fact starving. PIERRE BAUDELAIRE

━ moral compromise has its privileges ━ IN AN EARLIER TIME, Pierre might’ve fretted over her comment. ‘Not enough salt’ didn’t mean she hated the meal, that Pierre had made a mistake━Lena was hurting, and though he wasn’t scorned by her comment, everything inside him ached because of her pain. Pierre smiled anyway, something soft and sad, and took the bag back to pull out the breakfast sandwich on a fresh bagel. Holding it up to Lena in offering, his voice was as gentle as his smile, “Try dzees instead. Much better,” It would do nothing to distract her, though, not long enough for either of them to pretend they could find peace, anyway.
Her paranoia worried him as well, but Pierre took a few moments to respond to her, trying to weave his way through this maze. She was distrusting of the college kids and had every reason to be, and though he wanted to doubt they would lie, this was the same area that stole their child. They could have been compelled previously, though, and perhaps he could overwrite that. Either way, he knew better than to argue. Using his newly-freed hand, it went back around Lena, drawing her into him. He pressed his nose to her temple, then his lips to the space between her brows. “Of course, mon coeur. Whedzer zey lie or not, it will give us zee best answer we can get, and we will find him.”
Pierre dipped his head, quickly stealing a bite of her croissant and ripping the piece away, making a small sound in the back of his throat while he did━like a dog playing tug of war. He grinned stupidly at her, bits of croissant flying everywhere, coating the chest of his shirt mostly, hoping to draw even the tiniest ounce of amusement from Lena. Almost looking defeated, or perhaps embarrassed, Pierre chewed on the rest of his croissant and swallowed. “Not nearly as good as yours,” And he meant it. Shifting back an inch to give her more room to eat, Pierre nodded at the breakfast sandwich. “Eat and dzen we’ll go.”

The guilt was eating her alive. Every single day she was overcome with the crippling feeling of guilt that something bad had happened to her son and she was unable to keep him safe. Had she failed as a mom? Pierre would be quick to tell her she hadn’t, but it was still a question that played through her head. All she wanted to do is hug Baxter and never let go. Poor boy would never leave her sight again. She took the bagel from Pierre, taking a small bite. It was better than the croissant. She nodded her head in approval, a smile on her face as she did so. There was no way she would have held it together without her husband by her side. He truly had been a rock to her these past few months, but she was conscious that he too needed a rock. They both had to stay strong for one another. Those reassuring words again. They would find him. It was a hope that she was clinging onto so tightly. She chewed the bagel, easing into Pierre. Where she belonged. She nodded in response to his comment. Lena didn’t mean to be so hostile towards the other students and the college, but they were supposed to look out for Baxter. They failed him. Lena closed her eyes for a moment, allowing herself a moment to relax in the arms of her soulmate. Burying her head into his neck as she carried on eating the bagel, still holding onto the croissant in her other hand. Her eyes shot open as Pierre moved, taking a bite of the croissant. Crumbs scattered everywhere. She pulled back, a smile on her face as she did so, looking up at her husband. Staring into those dark eyes she locked onto when they exchanged their vows all those years ago. Her heart was so full of love whenever she looked at Pierre “I will go down there and show them how to make real croissant” She stepped back, placing the croissant down on the table. She focused on finishing the bagel as she brushed the flakes of pastry from her hair. She rushed to finish the bagel, keen to leave the apartment and start their search on campus. Ready to compel the truth out of the youngsters. “Let's go” She quickly picked her bag up off the table, along with the posters they had printed out. Lena approached Pierre, stretching up to give him a light kiss on the lips. “I love you” She gave him a warm smile before heading towards the apartment door. PIERRE BAUDELAIRE - the end
