Rounding his desk again, Noah lifted a hand in farewell to the mom trailing out of the room with her seventeen year old in tow. Judging by her smile she’d gotten more out of his presentation than her son. She’d sat in the front row while he’d thumbed idly through his phone, eyes only ticking up listlessly when his mom had dug an elbow into his ribs. If he had to lay money on who was going to be back here in August to study at Whitmore, it would’ve been the mom.
Snorting faintly, Noah began to rearrange the handouts strewn across the ranks of desks. Another handful gone from what he’d put out that morning, still more than three quarters left of what he’d started with though. The snort turned into a sigh as he glanced up at the empty doorway. The next session was meant to start in ten minutes but if his law of diminishing returns continued he’d barely fill a half dozen sets in this last talk of the day.
There were other things more interesting on campus, classrooms down the hall he’d heard ringing with laughter. Sports – the school’s really glory, flashy science experiments that made the department look more like a group of Vegas magicians – hands waving and snapping in the air as smoke and sparks plumed around them. Hawthorne would’ve got a real kick out of that.
Noah glanced at his watch as he gathered up a few more handouts from his desk, squaring them up along the front rows of desks. By now there was probably a fresh seat of emails in from Curtis anyway, more plans being drawn out for slipping deeper into the man’s business arrangements overseas. Video meetings scheduled for the following afternoon, documents he’d spend the rest of his night going over. Hunkered down at the kitchen table, brows bunching as he waited for Kiera and his wife to buzz in, noses going up at the scent of whatever he managed to pull together out of what was in the fridge. First home, the one to traditionally cook after all.
Maybe meatballs, some of the lingonberry jam he’d canned up a couple of weeks before. Mr. Domesticity, a role that traditionally would’ve gone to the women even in a culture that was as fair as most of Scandinavia was. It was the 21st century though and his own version of equality put him in the kitchen at least a third of the time. The women in his life certainly didn’t argue over it. The whole reason their triumvirate worked was that sense of equality, being able to pull together when it was needed.
A glance at the board showed his sketched out comparisons of ancient cultures still bright white against the green-black chalkboard. Druids on the Celtic side, the mirrored skalds, völvas, enarei, all variations on similar forms. People who were in tune with nature in a way that was far rarer now. Roles that echoed later in priests, scientists, even poets. The original form might have been stomped on by those who wanted to imprint their own cultures on the landscape but they were still there, coming up green and bright every time there was a chance for growth.
At the scuff of footsteps approaching, Noah turned, his warm ‘welcome to Whitmore’s open day’ smile already pasted in place. Chances were it would just be an enquiry where the labs were, but the fliers posted around town that listed ‘Day of the Druid’ talk had mustered up a little response at least. Sandy brows rose as he gestured the woman in. ”Hopefully you’re here for the druid talk or I’m gonna be spending the next hour twiddling my thumbs,” he joked. He walked towards her, hand already extended. ”Professor Jacobsen. Scandinavian studies professor and endless optimist.” That, in his book wasn’t the curse most seemed to see it as. If all you expected was the dark then you weren’t likely to notice the light when you shone right in your eyes.

━ i'll stay awake at night with just my skin and bones ━ SLIPPING HER JACKET ON, Destiny gave Berlioz a kiss right where his skull started its exaggerated split down the middle and whisked herself out the door. Her plans weren’t with Grey tonight━sometimes it felt like they were always spending time together, though she had no complaints. Especially not with… well, their current predicament. One hand pulled free from her steering wheel on the drive to Whitmore, resting on the tiny bump that’d started growing there. Just past three months, making this real in a way she never thought it would be. A little less than a year ago, she never could’ve dreamt such a scenario━pregnant with the child of the Darach she’d peeled from the road, burnt to a crisp and in need of her assistance.
But she was happy. They weren’t the same as they were a year ago; she trusted him with this, with their baby, and she had nothing but faith.
So, tonight wasn’t a direct attempt to spend time without him. She’d seen the advertisements around town, a talk about druids and, well, Destiny didn’t think the professor would be anywhere near Grey’s level of enchanting, but it might still be interesting. Hopefully. Any information about what they were came solely from her father and now Grey… with a decade in between. The passage of time alone would take memories, but her parents’ death added another layer to that, stealing precious moments from her childhood━lessons included. Destiny didn’t even know the difference between darachs and druids, not the whole truth, anyway. Not enough to know she shouldn’t be there… or just keep her mouth shut.
Pulling her hands from her midsection, Destiny stuffed them in her pockets and walked down one of Whitmore’s many hallways. She’d found a parking spot easy enough outside the building, then followed the numbers outside the doors until she figured she was at the correct one. It was quiet, empty, save for… nope, this was definitely the right place. The introduction proved it. His introduction. God, how did his students ever learn anything while looking at a face like that? Destiny had her own gorgeous teacher, of course, but that didn’t mean she couldn’t look.
“Yup!” She chimed, pulling out a hand to shake his, walking over to meet Professor Jacobsen somewhere in the middle. Destiny could feel it wafting from him the same as when she’d met Grey, though this was lighter, earthier somehow… she blamed it on the lack of burning flesh.
How adorable, she thought, that a druid would be doing a talk on his own kind. Her gaze flicked to the chalkboard, taking in the drawings and getting a sudden memory from a day with her father. Lacey had to sit with them through the lesson despite her disinterest, but Destiny remembered him drawing that… thing. It, to her, looked like three little petals intertwined but sticking out in their own directions. Destiny was beaming then, a fizzy, excited feeling bubbling in her chest at the discovery.
Looking back to him, she laughed softly, “And darach.” She said as if she was adding to the list he used to describe himself, giving his hand a gentle squeeze before pulling away and waving it in the air. “Or… druid or whatever.” Destiny added immediately after. Giddy now, she tucked her hand back in her pocket, doing a little roll up to her toes, bouncing without leaving the ground. “Destiny. Pretty much the same━minus the professor part.” She joked, glancing around at the empty classroom and then back to him. “Pretty lucky that I’m the first one here, huh?” Hopefully it meant they could talk about this freely, about what they were, because Destiny still thought it was all the same.

One interested party was better than none. It would be a step up on the classes he’d taught where each and everyone of the students had slowly broken their focus away from him, leaving him feeling as though he was shouting into the wind. Noah imagined every teacher had felt that pain a time or two, especially at college level. You needed that one set of eyes on you to feel like you were being heard. Hers were on him the minute she’d walked into the room. A promising start that would build on those busier sessions from earlier in the day.
The intention had never been to stay at Whitmore long enough to make things like this a possibility. Every other trip over the last couple of years had taken a handful of months at most. A problem presented, a solution offered up and once it had been settled he’d head on the road again or would make that trip back at home to pass on those stories to his dad like they’d once been passed onto him. Storytellers centuries after the first in their line had taken on the mantle of skald. Jacob himself, the druid from which all of this had sprung, including what he’d set up on the board.
Noah supposed his passing that along was his own version of seeing his ancestors, acknowledging everything that had come before to give him the power that ran in his veins. I see you Jacob. He’d let her see too, once he had her in the front row hooked on every word out of his mouth.
He was willing to put money on her being that way by the time he was done. That bright chirp to her voice and the shake of her hand had his grin brightening. The seventeen year old might’ve had no interest, but this was a different animal. Dipping his head towards her slightly, Noah mock winced. ”I’m glad to hear it,” he told her, mock conspiratorially. ”I honestly thought I’d lost the last of the attendees to the professor down the hallway who was luring people in with pizza.” Only half a joke to that, he’d half expected the trickle of visitors to his classroom to dry up entirely.
On her own she’d get his full attention, and look, he had hers. Noah watched her as she studied the chalkboard. Something shifting in her perhaps? The series of little clicks he’d felt in his chest a thousand times over the years, like the tumblers in a lock suddenly snicking into perfect alignment. His own did the same, his hand flattening on his chest as he returned her chuckle with a grin that quick froze as she tossed the word out with the carelessness of someone who had no clue their toy was a live hand-grenade.
Blue eyes cut to the door and then back to her, a hand reaching out to touch her elbow lightly to encourage her deeper into the room. Away from the open doorway and anybody who might’ve lingered and could hear. ”What about you, Destiny? A druid?” he asked tightly. ”Or a darach?” He hadn’t written that word on the board. Once you started talking about the dark side of things at something like this it was all people could hear. They fixed on it with a hunger that went beyond just seeing.
Noah’s hands slipped into his pockets, his shoulders stiffening slightly. It was foolish to believe that everyone of their kind who had turned dark would exude it like some noxious perfume or that anybody who called themselves a druid instead of a darach was inherently good, but there was a light about her that seemed to radiate with that little bounce and the joke that followed. ”Looks like you might be the only one. I guess that just means extra attention, right?”
Taking slow steps back, Noah sank down on the edge of his desk and tipped his head back towards the board. ”Do you have some idea about all of this?” Prying without obviously digging took some experience – he didn’t want to carve her open like he’d taken a can opener to her but Noah wanted rid of the tension that had started to ratchet his nerves tighter like someone was turning some crank inside of him. It wasn’t like movies would have everyone believe, there was no psychic link that came with druidism but there was a sensitivity there, especially amongst their own kind, a feel when that power seemed to radiate out of someone and Noah had learned to pay attention to it long before his wife had almost been killed as a teenager.

━ i'll stay awake at night with just my skin and bones ━ “WAIT, THERE’S PIZZA? MAYBE I am in the wrong place.” Destiny joked, taking one last longing look over her shoulder at the hallway. Actually, pizza did sound good━maybe she’d pop over after this. Or maybe she’d never leave; she’d just get stuck rotating between Whitmore, home, and work like she did after meeting Grey. Which was a joke, obviously, ‘cause even without that growing lump under her shirt, she was pretty attached to him.
Unfortunately for her━or for him━Destiny didn’t really notice the sudden tension. Following him into the room, she kept up that bright smile, only dimming slightly with her lowered voice. Whoops, okay, maybe she was just a bit too loud, which would explain how he acted, right? “Darach, like my dad.” It was just the term she was most familiar with━he always used that word. And… she almost mentioned Grey, as well, but something in her gut told her to stay quiet━what was she supposed to call him, anyway? That was way too weird to work out in front of a stranger.
“Right.” Destiny nodded sharply, still grinning, a warm, pinkish tone working itself into her cheeks. Okay, she wasn’t stupid, she knew he wasn’t flirting with her (was he?), she saw the ring on his finger━which didn’t technically mean he couldn’t be flirting━and anyway, Destiny was unbelievably stuck on someone else. In any case, it didn’t matter; he was still an attractive guy telling her he was gonna give her what she liked most (attention).
Standing with a few feet between them, Destiny unzipped her jacket and started to slip it off, gathering it under her arm. “Um… more than I used to, but still not as much as I want.” She laughed, “I’ve been learning more about it recently, but I’d still like to know more━obviously━which is why I’m here.” Destiny explained, taking a quick glance around. “Can I drag a chair over? Or should I sit at one of the… things?” She motioned to the first row of desks, “My feet are killing me.” Still happy despite her complaint, Destiny curled her jacket-less hand down and instinctively pressed it to her belly, though it wasn’t protruding as much as it would━or as much as she wanted it to.
“So, I guess asking if you know much about it would be kinda stupid.” Destiny joked, “Did you, like, grow up learning about everything? Are your classes a way to scope out the potential in Virginia?” Snickering, and clearly teasing him, Destiny’s eyes floated back to the board, wondering what it would’ve been like to have her dad around for all of her life. Would she be like Professor Jacobsen and start teaching about it, embracing and collecting all there was to know about who they were? If she had, though, she likely wouldn’t be here or in this position, and Destiny wouldn’t change any of it now━not with what was brewing.

Noah dipped his head, chuckling ruefully. The pizza had probably made all the difference in which session was more crowded now but when you had to resort to food to lure people in … there was probably something wrong with what else you were doing. He probably should’ve believed in the power of rewards a little more but years of experience had shown him just how weak that made a bargain. If you had to bribe someone into it then a bigger bribe would just drag them off elsewhere … unless there was a real lure to what you were doing. People had to want it and his skill had always been in getting them to see it.
His lips curved faintly with the temptation to sweep a hand through the air Jedi style to quip that it ‘wasn’t the pizza she was looking for’, but he resisted. He tilted his head back instead, humming lightly. ”Best I can do is probably a protein bar … I’m guessing there won’t be much competition.” A light quip, one that felt entirely inadequate just moments later.
Darach.
In a town like Mystic Falls it should have been no surprise. There were stirrings here, a feel to the air that had left him shivering a time or two, and not just from the bite of the winter cold in the air. Power crackled here and from what he’d managed to dig up about the town’s history, it had done from the start. Noah had learned from a young age not to judge, the labels on that power weren’t always given by the impartial, but he’d seen enough damage done by the dark oaks to feel that stir of discomfort around someone who tossed the term around so lightly.
A low sound slipped out of Noah, pale eyes watching her as she moved with him. Studying now, not just giving that cursory glance that his last group had. He hadn’t answered the question she’d thrown at him, evading it with one of his own. Shoulders stiff beneath the cover of his shirt, Noah hovered by her shoulder. ”From a line of darachs, then. I guess we all pass things down.” Everything he knew had come from his father, a man who had determined to keep straddling the lines his ancestor had drawn out on those docks a couple of centuries before.
If she was as dark as most in the know believed her kind to be then she was doing a stellar job of hiding it. A flush was crawling up her cheeks, that smile lingering on her lips. She didn’t need the pizza to lure her in to his talk. Settling on the edge of his desk Noah tried not to make an obvious study of her but he still watched as she slipped her jacket off. ”Well,” Noah said lightly, ”you’ve come to the right place. There’s never enough time in these things to go into everything but…” He gestured up at the board before the touch of her hand against her stomach had him stilling. Like so many other things there was a universal sign of pregnancy – minus the beach ball sized bump of course. The unconscious press of a protective hand against a stomach, checking on that life within, shielding it from everything horror out there in the world, big or small.
Noah was on his feet almost instantly, pulling the chair out from behind his desk for her. He flipped it around, set it next to his desk before he sank back down again. ”Since it’s just the two of us, how about we just make this an up close kinda session. Can you see OK from up here?” He nodded towards the board, like he hadn’t made sure a half dozen times that it could be read right from the last row.
The little huff that emerged was laced with humour as she joked. Heat rose faintly into Noah’s own cheeks. He raked his teeth over his lower lip for a minute, wondering how much it was wise to let out. ”I did,” he admitted finally, glancing over at her. ”My family are druids … and as you can guess, not in that new age, communing with the trees kind of way most take it as. They passed down what they knew and my father’s still working as an emissary.” A little information drip fed to see how much it was taken in. ”I try and work a little of that into my teaching, although most of it is either more ancient – who doesn’t love a viking saga after all – or more modern. Are your family from Virginia?” Like a fisherman he cast the fly out, waiting to see if she would bask in the shadows of those murky waters that surrounded their kind, or happily bite, trusting that she wouldn’t get yanked out of the water.

━ i'll stay awake at night with just my skin and bones ━ NOT ONLY DID DESTINY want to soak up all possible (and available) information about what she was, but she was desperate to find out more about her sister. If there was one man here, on the other side of the country, who knew her, then it wasn’t a stretch to imagine there could be others, too. Hopefully.
It was why she didn’t flinch when Mr. Jacobsen asked about her family, about her being from a line of Darachs. As far as Destiny knew, yes, she was. She had no idea about her grandparents, but she figured her dad had to get it from somewhere.
“Thank you.” Destiny grinned as he pulled a chair up for her. Dropping her coat over the back, she plopped heavily into the seat and glanced at the board. “Yep!” She chimed, narrowing her eyes at the symbols as if she’d gone blind before smiling up at him again. “Looks good.”
Ooh, emissary. Even before Grey, she knew that word. Had a love-hate relationship with the position. “I was an emissary, too. Briefly… Okay, I don’t think you can call it that.” She laughed. “It didn’t really work out. Once the pack realized they knew more about my kind than I did, they were quick to scoot me out of there.” But at least they’d helped her escape Tanner. She was upset about it initially, too afraid to be without him because it’d been so long since she was, but it’d worked out in the end. She didn’t know how long it would’ve taken her to leave Tanner if they hadn’t intervened. In any case, Destiny omitted all that.
Giggling at his mention of Vikings━because yeah, who didn’t like a bunch of bloody, shirtless men?━she nodded in agreement before it changed to a shake, sputtering her response to Mr. Jacobsen’s question about Virginia. Here was her chance to ask about her sister. “No, California. I’ve been here for a few years, though. I’m not totally sure if my dad did any travelling before. How about your family?” It wasn’t until she was older did Destiny realize her parents had lived a full life before settling down to have her and her sisters. And who knows how settled they truly were. “I did find out that some people here know my older sister. Julia Baccari? It’s probably a long shot, I just thought… who better to ask, right?” Clearly, that wasn’t why she was here, considering she had no idea the professor was one of them until she arrived.

Kids hadn’t been on the card in his marriage yet. It wasn’t a case of fertility issues or a lack of want. Eventually Noah figured they’d end up with a house full of kids in Boston. Their grandparents fussing over them, his sister – the supposedly cool aunt – drifting in and out of the place if she hadn’t squashed herself in with them still. It’d been the way of the Jacobsens since the first had settled down not a mile from the harbour. The house where he’d raised his kids wasn’t there anymore but Noah liked to believe he could still feel some trace of it when he passed the spot. It was that cord that tied you together through blood and didn’t snap when Death came a calling.
His eyes squinted up at the board as Destiny settled herself it, pronouncing the distance good for reading what he’d painstakingly printed up there. In ancient times they’d been in tune with that cord, still talking with the ancestors, offering up gifts to them to keep them happy as though there were a way they were guiding things for those future generations from beyond the grave. Given all that was out there in the world it was possible. Those ties mattered, they wound around you, not always visibly, and tugged you along certain paths.
Noah glanced sideways at Destiny, studying her profile for a moment before he had her laughing. Not over what his family had done, apparently, but with rue over her own attempts to follow the same trail. Making a small sound, Noah smiled at her reaction before he propped an elbow on his knee. ”We all need to learn somewhere,” he said lightly. ”Without training it can be like being thrown in at the deep end of a swimming pool. Maybe you manage to tread water, maybe you end up drowning in it all.” Sinking down into that darkness, the wise oak becoming the dark. It could be that easy, he’d seen it before. Given the read he’d gotten on Destiny already he didn’t think that was the way it had gone for her. That bitterness that came with a turning didn’t seem to radiate from her. Still though, she’d called herself a darach.
Going by her light alone, she never should’ve been. The hereditary had damned her with those cords, Noah supposed as he quipped about the Vikings. It was the furthest some of his students would ever see into his reality. ”I was gonna ask,” he admitted, his sandy brows hitching for a moment. ”Was that where your pack was?” He wasn’t about to admit to there being some in town. She’d probably have been aware if she’d been here a couple of years but he wasn’t about to reveal his own tenuous connections to them at all. ”For my dad, it was usually Boston,” Noah said with a bob of his head before he glanced at her. ”He’d travel at times though. With his pack, with just us kids to reach out to other emissaries. He still believes that those connections are what helps keep the peace.” That was something that he believed in totally. If anywhere had needed peace, it was this town.
Tipping his head, Noah half indicated the classroom, meaning somewhere far wider though. With his dad emissary to the local pack in Boston he’d headed out on the road in his stead. His version of bringing peace was wading into this dangerous situations with his wife and sister. He paused as Destiny brought up her older sister, the name ringing bells in the back of his head. Noah squinted at her, his expression suddenly serious. ”Your dad was an emissary?” he asked. Thinking back to the journals his dad had sent him when he’d arrived here, the ones that had led him to a hunter’s door for information, Noah made a small sound. ”I can’t say I know your sister, not past a line or two in something my dad wrote, but I think I met your dad once. My dad had a black book I guess you could call it, people he’d come across in our world. You had another sister, right? There were three of you?” He tried to filter back through the details in the book, matching them up with his own memories, men and women in dozens of towns and cities, little flickers of their lives passing through his own.

━ i'll stay awake at night with just my skin and bones ━ DROWNING WAS A LITTLE DRAMATIC, but Destiny supposed it wasn’t really as weird as she initially thought. Most of her life wasn’t steeped in this, but some of Grey’s stories brought on a whole new understanding. So, she figured he was kinda right. You could drown. Thankfully, though, she had Grey there to keep her afloat. Thinking of him had her smiling, giving the professor a light nod.
Pack. He was so serious. Maybe it was serious to everyone but her, serious enough to end up roadkill when you really got mixed up in it. They weren’t really her ‘pack’ for very long━not long enough to form real connections, and she didn’t like them very much━but she wasn’t about to come out like a total fraud to the nice new druid teacher she’d just met. “I joined them in California, but they weren’t from there. They moved around a lot, kind of a scraggly bunch. We got to Mystic Falls, and I stayed when they left.” She hadn’t met a werewolf since━well, at least she didn’t think she had.
“Keeps the peace? Between werewolves and our kind? Or all packs?” Destiny asked, brow furrowing lightly. They worked together all the time, didn’t they? Or did he mean peace by keeping the wolves from being… wolfy? Was that what he was trying to do now? Sniff out if Destiny had a pack of her own and then continue what his dad had done? Destiny didn’t wanna be a let-down, but she wasn’t planning on joining another pack anytime soon.
She watched the shift when she brought up her sister. Did that mean he knew something?! Was this another guy that Julia had pissed off? Destiny thought that perhaps it wasn’t super smart to keep bringing up her name, but the risks were still outweighed━maybe by hope alone. She wanted a tiny piece of the family she had before, though now she would (hopefully) start her own, so… did it matter anymore? Did she want to keep searching for someone who might not be a positive (or safe) influence?
“Uh… not totally sure. Probably, at some point?” It could’ve swung either way━if she had known about the darkness her father truly possessed, however, she would’ve been sure he wasn’t.
There was a flutter in her belly and a rough tug in her chest. He’d met her dad. The Professor knew him before he’d died, and even if she should’ve been wary about the word of a stranger, the little crumbs were enough to have her eyes welling with tears. Destiny straightened up in her chair, mouth falling open to form a bright smile. He knew information without Destiny even telling him, which maybe should’ve been a bit worrisome but had her looking like an excited, wide-eyed puppy anyway.
“Yes, yeah, me and Lacey and Julia,” She rushed out, “You met my dad? When? Were you━do you think our dads worked together or something?” She missed her dad all the time━especially when she needed advice or somewhere to rest her head after a hard day. Grey became that shoulder now, but there were years when she was alone without anyone but Tanner to look to. She wanted to blame her dad for not being there, but anytime Destiny spiralled down that road, it always led back to the fact that it was her fault.
Just as she had with the man who knew her sister━or Jennifer━Destiny was leaping at the chance for answers, little bits and pieces of her family like she could raise half of it from the dead and smoosh them together again. As if knowing one story about her dad would somehow bring them closer, reverse what she’d done, or help her in any way at all.

Most normal people in the neighbourhood had no idea what was going on under their noses. The Jacobsens were just normal. They were well known – which you had to expect given how many decades, centuries really, they’d been there – and were always known for being pretty community minded. If someone needed a little help around the house or were struggling a little financially the Jacobsens were the first to start circling the wagons. They threw open their doors and welcomed people in, the ignorant right there cheek and jowl with the initiated. Noah had always guessed that was a part of who they were. You couldn’t work to keep the peace in your neighbourhood if you were alienating part of it.
He guessed he’d been glad of that. Growing up he might’ve heard stories about vampires and witches and werewolves on almost a nightly basis but he was also the kid to go tripping out of Andy Redmond’s tree house when they’d all stayed over in the sixth grade – a ten feet fall meant a trip to the ER for stitches with Andy’s mom freaking out the whole time – and just about the worst in their driver’s ed class. Things were normal even if they weren’t and not all of their kind managed to have that.
Noah wasn’t about to go judging anybody else for that. People got by any way they could, some would end up with tragedy wrapped anaconda like around their lives no matter what they tried but some got through it and ended up finding a hand extended to them somewhere that would help pull them out of that mire. It hadn’t exactly been his intention for today – that had been to get some young minds engaged - but somehow this felt more important. A real education.
Head bobbing, Noah nodded understandingly at Destiny’s explanation. A travelling darach, like some faint mirror image of his own life right now. His brows remained hitched, his fingers peeling off his upper arm to gesture faintly at her. ”So you ended up kinda drifting without really drifting to anywhere.” It seemed like she’d found her place here. Destiny might now have known too much about what she was but she was already a step above him in the getting settled stakes. Maybe – God forbid – if his dad wasn’t still in his prime he would’ve been, right back home with the pack. Noah automatically uncrossed his arms, tapping knuckles lightly against his desk on the side away from where Destiny was sitting. He glanced at her, catching that faint frown before he shook his head. ”Kinda, I guess. There are two main groups in our part of Boston – either side of us, I mean – vampires and werewolves. They were both there when my ancestor arrived from the old country. He stepped in to stop a fight between them on the docks and changed the path of his family forever.” It sounded like some sort of Hollywood romanticism but it was the total truth.
For years his dad had tried to follow the path laid out for them all the way back then. He forged connections, tried to help others do the same. Most of the time that had been done from their base in Boston but his dad had travelled, had networked in a way that meant he could do the same years later and follow his dad’s footsteps. California hadn’t been somewhere he’d circled back to but he remembered that first trip out there, the faces and names of the people he’d been introduced to soft around the edges by now. There’d been a guy they’d spent some time with, a couple of hours of him drifting around the parking lot out in the woods where they’d met just about as boring as it got in those days.
Noah’s brows furrowed as he tried to sharpen up those edges. Maybe this was another time he got back in contact with his dad, like he had done when he’d ended up looking up a hunter here in town on his dad’s recommendation. The black book – well, his now he guessed since it had been passed to him – had notes. Wife’s name is May, third generation druid on his father’s side. Mother of two, turned darach after the death of her husband. Former emissary of the local pack killed under strange circumstances, reach out to the replacement if there is one. Little notations that gave you a taste of someone’s life.
He pressed his tongue against the point of one canine, staring at the board in front of him but not really seeing it. The guy had … three daughters, a wife. From an area that was pretty active when it came to the supernatural. Anything more than that he’d have to look up again. ”That might’ve been how they connected,” he drawled lightly as he looked back and saw that excitement filling Destiny’s face like he’d located a slice of that pizza after all. There were tears though, visible enough in her eyes that he twisted to grab the box of Kleenex on the desk and offered them up to her. ”I thought I remembered right. I’m pretty sure he showed my dad a photo of the three of you. Were two of you twins?” Another little crumb dropping from his mental image of the pages.
There’d been no intention of getting her hopes too far up about what he knew but Noah didn’t wanna hold the cards too close to his chest out of suspicion – being a darach didn’t necessarily mean evil. He tilted his head, the smile tugging at the corners of his lips for a moment. ”I did. I don’t know exactly what kinda connection they had but we made a stop when we went on a trip out to Cali. I remember woods, my dad telling me to be patient – I was maybe 10, so you can imagine how that went – yours was pretty chill about me being there. He told me he had kids too – all girls. I can see if my dad knows anything more?” The offer might not pan out but he’d be a mega asshole if he offered something that put that much hope in a pregnant woman’s face and then yanked his hand back and pretty much belted out a psych!.

━ i'll stay awake at night with just my skin and bones ━ VAMP━WHAT? VAMPIRES WERE REAL?! “I’m sorry, did you just say vampires?” Destiny sputtered, blue eyes wide, mouth hanging open. What in the hell…
It seemed Mystic Falls was a lot more active than she already thought it was. On the outside, it appeared like a quaint little town, full of cutesy mom-and-pop shops and some sort of specialty food you couldn’t get anywhere else. She didn’t like fudge, but tourists probably came to Mystic Falls for fudge or toffee or something like that━it was just that type. Apparently, lots of people here wanted their fudge with a side of homicidal shapeshifters, magic-wielders and… fucking vampires.
But none of that was as surprising as the revelation that she and Professor Jacobsen had only one degree of separation: Destiny’s father. He’d never met Julia, apparently, but he knew the one person Destiny wished to bring back (if it could be anyone)━she was still holding out hope that Julia was alive.
Tears filled her eyes, but Destiny hastily blinked them away as if blurry vision would have her missing this. If his dad knew hers, they could maybe help fill in the missing pieces that the man on the street and limited police resources couldn’t. Her stomach bubbled with hope; more than just one━a family that went past just one parent each for her child and no other relatives. None they acknowledged, anyway.
“Thanks,” She laughed as he offered up the Kleenex, reaching out to pluck one tissue from the box and press it to her eyes. “Yes! Me and Lacey,” Destiny nodded twice quickly, like a little kid who couldn’t wait for the end of the story.
Ten. Professor Jacobsen had been ten, the age Destiny was when they died. She wasn’t the best with guessing ages━maybe she was still a baby when he met her dad… a toddler, at the very least, while Julia was likely closer to his age. She could imagine how easy it was for her dad to fall into that regular pattern, as comfortable with another kid as he was with his own. But then again, Destiny couldn’t remember him being anything but the greatest dad.
It was then that she realized she hadn’t mentioned the whole reason his revelation brought tears to her eyes. “That… yeah, if you could ask, that would be amazing. My parents passed away when I was ten, so I haven’t… it’s just really nice finding somebody else that knew him, if only briefly.” Destiny smiled warmly, hopeful that he’d understand. “It’s been a really long time since I’ve seen my sister, so I was trying to track her down, too.” Please see if your dad knows anything about her. It went unspoken, but Destiny hoped the pleading in her eyes spoke for itself.
Another tear rolled, mopped up by the tissue, just as the shuffle of feet broke up their little Darach Convention. Whipping her head around, she watched as somebody traipsed into the room nervously as though it wasn’t a public invitation━Destiny was the one taking up all his attention. “Whoops,” She laughed sheepishly, standing and grabbing her jacket off the back of the chair. Hoping she could speak to him about it later, Destiny gave the druid a look of understanding and a small smile before retreating to one of the regular seats, ready to learn something about who they were━if she could pay attention. Her mind would be drifting off the whole time, jumping to all the best outcomes from this new connection during his presentation.

You never knew just how far you’d dipped a toe into the waters of the supernatural. It was easy to think you’d swum right to the bottom of the ocean and seen all that was out there, but there was always something you hadn’t seen. Noah wasn’t arrogant enough to believe that he knew it all, if he had then he’d have known what his wife was the moment that she’d been torn up by that alpha and nothing had happened, except for all that blood. Waiting up with her through that first night he’d prayed that his dad would know something when he finally got there. She’d bolted before they’d worked it out though, another disappearance from another small town hospital, nothing unusual. Her reappearance at his front door had been though, her scream piercing and telling all at the same time. Without that meeting his sister likely wouldn’t have survived.
Maybe the same could be said of the hundreds of people in Boston that would’ve died before hunters swept in to rid the city of its vampire population. Long before wholesale slaughter could take hold his ancestor had stepped in and changed everything. Vampires had become such a normal thing, for him at least. Noah paused at Destiny’s sputter, grimacing faintly before he nodded apologetically. ”Yep. Just another one of those things Hollywood got kinda right.” They were rife in this town too, although he wasn’t about to out them and send Destiny on a search to find out about them.
That would’ve been up to her dad to pass on initially. It seemed as though at least some chunk of that supernatural education hadn’t been passed down to Destiny. Noah shifted uneasily as the shimmer of tears seemed to grow in Destiny’s eyes. He offered up the tissues, hoping to stem them while he trod through what he was pretty sure was a familial minefield now. Setting the box down on his thigh, in case, Noah braced his forearm against it. ”I thought so. I usually got sent off to play with the pack kids when I was that young, I guess you guys weren’t with him that day.” Or her dad had kept her out of the business in the way his own hadn’t. The intention had always been there for him to take his dad’s place, still was as far as he knew. Something had taken Destiny away from her family though, something to make the gulf between them clear.
There it was, the shoe that dropped like a ball of lead through the pit of Noah’s stomach. It explained the tears, and the complete lack of knowledge. His brows knotted, concern filling the blue eyes between them. ”I’m sorry for your loss.” It didn’t matter that it had likely been more than a decade since it had happened. ”It’s no problem. I’ll find out what I can, I’ll ask about your sister too. I’m sure he’ll be happy to send me anything he knows, or ask around if he doesn’t. It’s a small world out there.” Her turning up in his classroom today was proof of that too. Forget six degrees of Kevin Bacon, in the supernatural world it was six degrees of species separation. Someone somewhere would know and that would always find its way back to his dad.
Noah plucked the box off of his thigh as Destiny wiped away another tear with the tissue she held. He frozen as there were footsteps outside again. Late. Forcing out a huff of amusement, Noah set the box down and made a grab for a pen and scrap of paper to pass to Destiny. He passed the seat she’d retreated to, putting it down in front of her. ”Looks like we’ve got some company after all. If you wanna leave your number, we can set up that follow up.” He instantly turned towards the newcomer, sweeping up one of the leaflets to hand it over. ”Hi, welcome to the session. If you wanna grab a seat we can get going. I’m professor Jacobsen.” Noah already had a hand out, but as the visitor shook it, he was glancing over his shoulder at Destiny. He just hoped that whatever news her found was gonna be a comfort of some sort for her.
