You might hear voices in your head or you might see dead people, but everything will be okay. Her parent’s tried to dress it up, make everything seem less terrifying but the nerves on their faces were apparent when they called her down to speak to her. Nervous about telling her the truth about what they were. Some of it had registered with her, but there was a lot of it that didn’t. It was as if she was just waiting around. Waiting for something to happen to her. Now that it was in her head she was almost convincing herself that she could hear voices, but it was just her imagination getting the better of her. Her parents gave the whole ‘were always if you need a chat’ speech but Hazel insisted she was fine. Which she was, for the large part of it. It was only when she thought about how her dad told her his abilities scared him, that was when a shiver travelled up her spine. But for now, she was still human (maybe? She wasn’t even sure anymore). She was reminded of this as another student shoved a flyer into her hands as she was walking past, announcing upcoming plans for prom. Hazel rolled her eyes before folding the piece of paper in two without even looking at it. They’d literally just had homecoming and now something else was being planned. Advertising it as being the best prom the school had ever seen, a slogan she was certain they used last year and the year before that. Despite the wrinkle of her nose as she was handed the flyer, she was still going to the prom. She had to. But this meant she needed a dress and maybe a date? Oh God, no. She wasn’t about to go around the school and ask someone to go to the prom with her. How embarrassing. The cafeteria was as jammed as always. Loud voices filled the air, creating one noise. It wasn’t like walking into the cafeteria on her day at Mystic Falls. Eyes scanning the room furiously looking for a familiar face. Failing that, a friendly one. Abi was that friendly face she spotted across the hall and asked if she could join her for lunch. The friends haven’t looked back since almost joined at the hip. She spotted Abi almost instantly, rushing over to join her at the table. “Can you believe this!” She placed the flyer down on the table as she sat down across from Abi, “Giving out flyers for prom already. Feels like we’ve literally just come back from the summer holidays.” It was one event after another at the school (or at least it felt that way). Hazel pulled her lunch box out of her bag, landing with a quiet thud on the table, “Are you gonna try and find a date?” If Abi was searching for a date then that meant she’d have to as well. It was even more embarrassing turning up alone. AUBREY SHEPARD - hope this is okay

| Magically aging up overnight had been the first weirdest thing to happen to her since coming back to life. She remembered her life with her dad, and it hadn’t been a bad one. She had been resurrected by her aunt, and her childhood had been rough for a time. The memories of that night frequently had her screaming as s child. Eventually her father had gotten her some help, and she had managed to move on from it. It remained with her, like a wound that just wouldn’t truly heal. She just didn’t allow it to rule her life.
That wasn’t what had her completely away with the fairies as she sat in the canteen staring off into space. Her mind was lost in what her father had told her. Their family heritage. For the most part it was alright… unless she took a life. It could be an accident or intentional but if she was at fault for a life lost… then she would be forced to endure turning into a wolf. She loved wolves… but never really fancied being one. She would be fine as long as she didn’t accidentally kill someone… is what she told herself. She certainly didn’t see herself as a murderer.
She jumped visibly not seeing her best friend suddenly turn up at her lunch table. She sat backwards, blinking a few times as she woke herself up from her daydream, ” Believe what?” Aubrey asked as she then turned her gaze down to the table as she seen the flyer that Hazel placed in front of her. Groaning she lifted it up to look at it, ” Really? Already?” Aubrey answered sounding a little depressed, ” Feels like I’ve just broke my dads bank account for a homecoming dress, now I’ve got to find a prom dress too?” Aubrey questioned, as she placed the flyer back on the table.
Aubrey leaned back in her chair and then reached into her lunch bag. During her daydream she had forgotten to eat. Biting into her ham and cheese sandwich. She smiled as Hazel joined her at her table. She shifted her stuff over toward her side of the table freeing her up a little bit of space. She raised her eyebrows at the mention of a date, ” My social standing can survive going solo or with my bestie. Can’t give my dad two heart attacks over money and the prospect of a boy.” Aubrey laughed a little, ” Wanna be my friend prom date?” Aubrey asked sweetly. It wouldn’t be the first time they had attended a dance together. Perhaps she would consider dates for her senior year dance.

There were so many times her parents had said to her, ‘Oh, where has the time gone?’ Telling her was growing into a beautiful young lady right in front of their eyes. It had her cheeks flushing pink, telling them to stop, especially if it was in front of other people. Those family friends who say stuff like ‘Gosh, I remember you when you were…’ then insert a random age that Hazel had minimal memories of. If only the ground would swallow her whole in those moments, but she was as polite as ever to these random people. School felt like the only normal thing in her life at the moment. It was steady and somewhat reliable and now she had a prom to focus on. Anything to forget the fact she might start seeing ghosts or screaming at dead people. She thought about texting Uncle Kit, knowing he would give the bare harsh facts of what could happen to her. She could rely on him to give her the truth, but did she want the truth? Prom. That was the only thing that was important right now and her math homework that was due next Monday. Numbers basically swirled around on the paper every time she looked at them. Who needed to know cos tan sin? Her sudden appearance startled Abi, bringing a smile to Hazel’s face as she slipped into the seats. “You okay?” She asked, realizing Abi’s mind was clearly elsewhere. Drifting to another land, as she often did in science class. “Yeah, my parents will probably expect me to wear my homecoming dress.” They wouldn’t understand it was social suicide to be seen wearing the same thing to prom, “I’m gonna have a look online tonight though see if I can find anything.” Hours and hours of scrolling through endless pages of clothes, “Ugh… I wish I had a sister or something.” She couldn’t exactly go raiding her mom’s wardrobe for clothing. Hazel glanced down at the flyer, “We have t-minus three weeks… this is doable… we can do this.” She was certain of it. She pulled open her lunchbox. Cheese and tomato sandwich, an apple and some kind of granola box (which she’d probably swap for something out of the vending machine later). A huge grin on her face as she unwrapped her sandwich, looking up at Abi. “Of course!” One less thing to worry about, turning up at the prom with no one on her arm, “There’s just no one here you know… like no one good looking.” Hazel bit down into her sandwich, eyes scanning the cafeteria. They needed someone new to walk through those doors. A hot fresh new face, instead of the same ones looking back at her every day. AUBREY SHEPARD

❝ Like A Shooting Star... I've Come So Far❞
Day dreaming seemed like the way to go these days. She usually daydreamed through her afternoon classes… how she continued to pass them she had no idea. Though she had thoughts troubling her lately. The last serious conversation she had with her father, consisted of him telling her about a family curse. One that she might some day activate for herself. She certainly hoped not, as to do so she would have to take a life. She didn’t think of herself as capable of murder and decided not to dwell on it. Never gonna happen… She thought to herself. She experienced that thought just as she was jumped out of her skin, her best friend’s arrival at the lunch table had her visibly jumping and questioning what she just asked, ” Yeah I’m ok. Just away with the fairies… as per usual.” Aubrey answered her friend nodding her head and giving her a kind smile. She looked down at the table as she was presented with a flyer… Prom. Making a comment about her dads’ bank account in relation to buying her a new dress. She smiled with Hazel said that her parents would probably expect her to repeat an outfit previously worn. Aubrey managed a look of mock horror, ” You would think they would be a little more sympathetic right? They were our age once… “ She commented. She placed the flyer back on the table in front of them both. Aubrey reached into her lunch bag removing her fruit salad she had made for herself this morning. Trying to be healthy. Digging into her apple slices, she looked up at Hazel as she suggested looking for something online, ” That’s a good idea, might find something completely beautiful and on discount.” Aubrey seconded that, but sometimes she hated buying stuff online especially clothes. They could arrive and look completely different to the picture. Sometimes you had to be careful, ” Just be careful. You know what online shopping can be like.” Aubrey reminded her gently. Munching her way through the fruits she had bought in a Tupperware container she heard the wish for a sister, ” I know. Sucks being an only child. But at least if you really had to, you could raid your mom’s. At your own peril…” She laughed. She had met Hazel’s mother and while she was nice… she certainly didn’t want to ever be on her bad side. Aubrey laughed when she said that they had three weeks til prom, ” We can do this. Just message me photos of what you like, and we can bounce idea’s off each other. “ Aubrey suggested. Something that would suit her might not always suit Hazel. Clashing with their complexions or their hair colours. Colour mis matches were just as bad as repeating a dress you have already worn. Hazel eventually asked if she was going to try and find a date and Aubrey shook her head. Telling her that she would rather limit the amount of heart attacks that she would give her father. Adding a boy into the mix wouldn’t go down well. Though he surely couldn’t expect her to be a nun for the rest of her life. So instead of looking for a guy to go with Aubrey asked her friend to be her date instead, ” We would have loads more fun together anyway.” Aubrey laughed. Eating the remainder of her fruit before pressing the lid back to the container and putting it back in her lunch bag and pulled out a can of zero sugar soda, ” One day someone might just walk in and knock you off your feet. I bet there is loads of guys here who would want to go with you… “ Aubrey told her. That wasn’t really the problem though. The problem was, would they want to go with that guy.

She should have been more excited about the prom, but it was just hassle. Hassle she didn’t need on top of everything else. Exams, homework, the fact her parents weren’t human. Well, they were human, but they weren’t fully human. Maybe? She didn’t really know. In fact, she felt like she didn’t know anything anymore, apart from the fact the prom was up and coming. Hazel was happy to throw all her thoughts towards that for now. Maybe she could convince her dad to let her buy something new for the prom, her mom however was a tougher nut to crack. Granted, she did have a million dresses in her wardrobe but nothing new. They were all boring and she’d worn them at least once. “I wouldn’t get much sympathy from my mom. She would probably tell me a story about how it was back in the old days.” Sometimes it was easier to bypass her mom and go straight to her dad for something. Hazel knew it wasn’t right, but she knew she’d be met with an immediate no from her mom. Her dad however could be persuaded. Imagine if she had siblings to contend with though? That would be the worst. She loved being an only child, most of the time. There were those moments growing up when she wished she had a sister by her side. Someone to play dolls with or grown-ups. Her parents would only play for so long before telling her they had to go off and play adults. Clean the house, grocery shopping, all that boring adult stuff. An idea. “Yes! Find something on sale then ask my parents to buy it.” There’s a chance her mom would still say no. Probably insisted her grandma could make her something, but she’d seen the stuff her grandma made. The jumpers on Christmas day were enough to put her off asking. “I’ll head straight for the dresses. No stopping to look at any cute tops or bags.” Or boots, or jeans, or coats. The list went on. There was no way she was raiding her mom’s wardrobe. Like, yeah her mom had nice clothes and stuff but nothing Hazel would wear. They just had different styles. “Oh my God, my mom would kill me if she found me looking through her wardrobe without asking.” It wasn’t even worth trying it. She nodded at Abi’s suggestion. There would be a stream of messages sent to her best friend later that evening with so many options. “Deal!” She exclaimed, before taking a bite of her sandwich. They would have more fun together. “We can make it a real girls' night… like you can come over to mind after school and we get ready together. Take some cute pics as well.” Her Instagram story would be nonstop pictures of her and Abi that evening, maybe the odd picture with another student. Hazel let out a laugh, “There’s absolutely no one in this school who would ask me to prom!” She scoffed, before finishing off her sandwich, “I’d give them a solid no anyway and tell them I’m going with my best friend.” She said proudly with a smile. ❝ I'm Like A Shooting Star... I've Come So Far❞
When faced with the news of prom Aubrey shared the exact same excitement as her friend. Any other girl would have been excited about the prospect of prom. It was just another night of pressure. Pressure to find the perfect dress, the perfect date. Do the perfect makeup and hair style. To look your best and have a magic night. Just another memory that she wished she could share with her mother. Times like this she felt her absence like a sharp pang in her chest. She never let on though as she spoke to her friend, ” Go straight to your dad then. Play the daddies girl card. It works… sometimes.” Aubrey smiled at her, ” Unless you want to hear stories from your moms’ glory days.” Aubrey shrugged.
Their biggest obstacle at the minute was finding a dress. She was from a one wage household. It wasn’t that they were destitute, but her father was someone to say, ‘surely you have something in that closet of yours.’ It was easy for a guy; they could roll out the same suit year after year… girls couldn’t do the same. Aubrey suggested having a look online to get ideas and they might get lucky, ” She might surprise you. Shown initiative and concern for their money.” Aubrey thought, she wasn’t demanding that they buy her an insanely priced dress, ” Straight for the dresses… or you’ll max out a credit card before having got a dress.” Aubrey teased.
Aubrey suggested that she could raid her mothers’ wardrobe if she was really desperate, but they weren’t there yet, ” Probably not worth your life.” Aubrey smiled in agreement. Soon she was saying that they could both have a look online, pick out options, take screenshots and bounce ideas back and forth until they found something suitable, ” What are you thinking about then? Strapless? Spaghetti straps? Shoulder sleeves?” Aubrey questioned. If they were asking their fathers, they needed to be careful that they won’t give their fathers heart attacks at the thought of buying their little girls strapless dresses. It would quickly get them a chaperone each for the evening.
Aubrey eventually asked her to the prom as they both agreed not to go searching for a date. They would have more fun as friends anyway. When Hazel said about making it a real girls night, Aubrey smiled, ” That sounds great. Our instagrams are going to be flooded with girls’ night hashtags.” Aubrey laughed, ” Maybe a couple of the prom…” She laughed.
When she said how no one would ask her anyway Aubrey gave her a face saying there were probably many who wanted to ask her. When she stuck by her statement Aubrey deepened her glare at her, ” Hazel, you’re gorgeous. Guys here would be blind not to want to ask you to prom.” Aubrey told her seriously, ” Maybe you don’t want any of them, can’t blame you either.” She smiled and grinned a bit when she turned around and said that she would say no, ” Well you had better…” Aubrey laughed, ” No one here I would say yes to, even if they asked.” Aubrey told her.

Hazel had been playing that game with her parents since she was a kid. It didn’t take her long to realise that her dad was more likely to give in compared to her mom, which worked beautifully until one day he asked her what her mom said. She knew better than to lie as nothing in the world was worth feeling the wrath of her mom. “I’ll try but I think he’s become pretty wise to that now.” She could potentially work on her mom as well. A credit card. Oh, the dream. One day she would be able to have that little piece of plastic to call her own, although she had read a million articles online about people running themselves into the ground with one. Buying really expensive cars or luxury holidays to Dubai. Hazel liked to think she was a little more savvy than that. Her parents told her from a very young age that money didn’t grow on trees. Nonetheless, she needed a plan B too. Something she could dig out of her wardrobe in case it was a solid no from her parents. “Ummm…” Hazel trailed off, “Probably spaghetti straps. I’m always worried strapless will fall down and I’d never live that down! A maxi dress or something or maybe even a maxi skirt with a cute top.” Anything too short would have her dad wishing he’d never had a daughter. Plus, she read all those magazines that tell you less is more. Keep the boys wondering. She would channel the advice she received from Harmony. Act like she was the hottest bitch there. It would hashtag galore with a million stories as well. “Gotta keep our followers entertained.” Those couple hundred she had, including various family members so she always had to keep it tame. No videos of her taking shots with her friends and certainly no boys made the feed or stories. She felt her cheeks flush as Abi called her gorgeous. “Stop.” She responded with a shy laugh. “Back at ya!” She flashed her best friend a wide grin. It was true though. Unfortunately Hazel spent waaaaay too long scrolling social media looking at models in bikinis that sometimes her self-esteem took a hit because of it. “Ditto.” Okay maybe she’d say to one of the jocks to boost her social status, but not if that meant ditching Abi. ❝ I'm Like A Shooting Star... I've Come So Far❞
Aubrey would say that lucky for her she didn’t have that problem. Though she wasn’t lucky, she still had no idea where her mom was, why she had left… It was so strange. They were resurrected together, Aubrey had fell asleep that night in her arms… and had woken up completely alone, ” Yeah, I have to admit my dad knows my tricks too, but occasionally the daddy card does work.” Aubrey agreed. Sometimes if you were lucky tricks weren’t required… Though trying to honestly convince your parents of another dress… usually required tricks.
Always a good idea to have a plan B. Aubrey kept her previous dresses, just in case her father insisted that she wore something that she had before. Wearing something twice was usually a social death sentence for girls their age. Though maybe, you could dress it up a bit, modify it somehow, make it just that little bit different, to be pulled off as fashionable.
Aubrey went on to ask what kind of style she was looking for. She pondered that thought as well for a moment. She kind of liked off the shoulder straps at the minute, still felt secure enough. She giggled a little at what she said about strapless, ” I’m right there with you…” Aubrey agreed with her, ” Probably going to find something with off the shoulder straps, kinda liking those at the minute.” Aubrey told her friend. Talking about the prom was certainly making it more enjoyable hopefully the night would be just as good.
Well, they had a fully fleshed out plan for prom night and the weeks leading up to it. Fingers crossed for the both of them they were able to get what they needed from their parents. Abi turned her attention to their lack of dates and told her friend that there were probably loads of guys wanting to ask her out. None had as of yet, but they weren’t exactly hoping for it. They were much looking forward to the girl’s night they had planned. When Hazel returned the compliment Abi rolled her eyes, ” Yeah… thanks.” She said with a tone of voice that indicated that she didn’t quite agree.
Just as she swallowed the last bite of her lunch the bell went off sounding harsh to her ears and she groaned. At least the home bell was something to look forward to, ” At least its music… something I actually enjoy…” She shut her eyes and made peace with that fact. Gathering up her stuff she stood up almost gracefully from her seat, ” See you after school!” Aubrey smiled to her friend as she sauntered off in the direction of her locker, which mercifully was on the way to her next class.
