━ climb that goddamn mountain ━ CASSIE WANDERED PAST THE threshold of the Salvatore School; eyes narrowed at all the school-type shit littering the walls. It had been a while since she’d been in a building like this, and this trip brought back the itchy feeling she hated━obviously, it hadn’t been long enough.
But she was on a mission, she reminded herself, an important mission—one for her grandma and Kace, her new super-ghost bestie. Henrik might’ve been the guy who helped Davina (ew) and the brother of the dude who nabbed Davina while Cassie was inside her (double ew), but he was the only witch she knew that could bring back the dead. Like, he’d literally forced their souls back into their bodies, which was wild as hell. Not an experience she’d suggest to anyone, but it was effective.
It was easy enough to stop another student and ask if they knew where Mr. Henrik Mikaelson might be, and even easier to find his classroom after that. It would’ve been rude to interrupt while a class was going on, she thought, and, plus, he’d probably think she was a bitch and wouldn’t wanna help her, and Cassie was trying to avoid bad first meetings like that. Especially with a dude whose brother was the O.G. Vampire or Hybrid or what the fuck ever. She was, however, confident in her abilities to out-witch him if she needed━maybe stupidly overconfident, but still.
Waiting until all the kids filtered out, ones who looked just her age, Cassie stuck her head in through the door, blonde hair spilling over her shoulders, blue eyes narrowed as if to help her see better. And, just as suspected, there he was. Henrik.
Cassie strolled in like she owned the place, chin tipped up with more of that over-confidence━the very thing that had her wandering into an immortal bar like freakin’ idiot. At least Linc made the night worth it, though. Wait, no, focus focus. Fooooccusss.
Bright red lips pursed, eyes narrowed again, this time inquisitively, as Cassie came right up to Henrik. “Hey, magic boy.” She muttered, and then released all the pent-up anxiety in her chest with the big breath she was holding in. Smiling sheepishly, that embarrassed blush came in slow and steady. “Sorry. Um. I wanted to talk to you about dead people and stuff, ‘cause, like, you’re kinda the only expert I know, and it’s all gotten worse since you brought me back. Do you even know how many ghosts are lingering around Mystic Falls?” Cassie scoffed, glancing at the last of the students who went moving out the door, then back up to Henrik. “Also, like, I know you gave us your phone number and whatever when you brought us back, but I kinda hated you then, and I threw it out. Sorry.” Cassie flashed all her teeth in a guilty smile like a child caught with their hand in the cookie jar.

Henrik knew that he was lucky with the way his life had turned out, Olivia had agreed to marry him, they had two amazing kids and life was good. His siblings all seemed really happy now as well and for that he was truly grateful. Henrik had managed to land himself a job at the Salvatore School when it had opened so that he could help the students figure out who they were and also so that he could keep an eye on the twins and Hope. He still felt a little guilty about the way the spell had backfired but he knew that he wouldn’t give up this chance to spend time with the kids. It had taken them a while to get their heads around what had happened at first but now they all seemed to be taking it in their stride and it was the same for the other kids who were affected by the spell as well. Knowing that they were all doing okay meant that Henrik was able to focus on other things and at the moment that meant working on the spell that would make him immortal and finding a way to break the curse that had been placed on the Alvarez girls’ family generations before they were born. Their mother had fallen victim to the curse but Henrik refused to let the same thing happen to them. That was something that Henrik had to leave for his free time, though, and that day he’d had classes to teach instead. As his last class of the day came to an end, however, Henrik watched the students file out and he started packing up his things, ready to start working on the two projects he had on the go at the moment but he stopped when a voice sounded and he looked up to see that one of the girls who had been forced to become a part of the Harvest Ritual like Davina had entered the room. “Magic boy?” he asked, raising an eyebrow in amusement as he looked over at Cassie. He hadn’t seen her since he had completed the ritual and freed all three girls from being stuck inside Davina’s head but he couldn’t deny that he had wanted to make sure that they were all doing alright. He couldn’t even begin to imagine what it must have been like for them but they were all free now and Henrik knew that was just as it should be. “It’s okay,” he shrugged as she apologised before nodding as she asked if he knew how many ghosts were lingering around Mystic Falls. “I know there are a lot, there are even more souls stuck on the Other Side,” he admitted. That was something that Henrik had grown used to and he had brought a few of them back himself but he tried not to do that too often if he could help it these days, not since the rogue angels killed Olivia, took him and tortured him for everything that his family had done. They had used the people he had brought back against him as well so he tried to make sure that he had their consent at least some of the time these days although he never had been able to turn away someone in need. As she said that she had thrown his number out and apologised, Henrik felt a smile touch his lips. “Don’t worry about it, I don’t blame you for hating me back then.” They had hated Davina after all and he had been working with them so it was just one of those things. “What can I do for you?”CASSIE LUANNA

━ climb that goddamn mountain ━ OKAY, SO MAYBE THIS was a super-awful-terrible idea, like, maybe he’d try to kidnap her for his brother again, but Cassie was running out of options. Kace only had so long before he’d start going all ghost-crazy, and then they couldn’t be besties anymore━she’d already been through that once.
Henrik was her best━and maybe only━resource, so he’d have to do. There was no telling whether or not he’d even help her, either, but Cassie was being optimistic.
Thankfully, he seemed nice enough. Cassie wasn’t always the best judge of character, but still. He didn’t kick up a fuss when she started off on the wrong foot, and he even said he didn’t blame her for hating him. They were off to a good start!
So… here was the bit that could either make or break this interaction.
“Um… so, basically, when I was younger I always saw ghosts. My grandma was a medium, like a psychic━” He was old, right? So she assumed she didn’t have to explain some other species. “━and one time she lost control during a seance and I had to try and fix everything. Aaanyway, like I said, after coming back to life, it’s so much worse. Like, I can see them everywhere. And so I met this one ghost━and I don’t need a lesson on Ghost Safety, okay? ‘Cause falling for some crazy ghost’s bullshit was what got me into the Harvest Ritual in the first place. But this one’s cool, he’s really nice, and, like, his brother accidentally killed him ‘cause he’d just come back from the army or whatever. And I thought, if anybody’s gonna be empathetic to a little family drama, it’s gotta be you, right?” Cassie smiled sheepishly, then gulped in a huge breath like she hadn’t breathed once during all her babbling.
“The point is, I was hoping you could teach me how to bring people back to life, and also maybe to control ghosts a little more. Obviously, I’m gonna be responsible ‘n whatever. Again, I know I gotta be careful, but this just isn’t fair.” Cassie hoped Henrik could acknowledge the injustice of this━especially since he’d helped rectify her own.
