Friendly overtures (with cassie Luanna)
Klaus may not have been physically present in Mystic Falls but he did his best to ensure that his presence was still there in some form. Mainly through the use of eyes that were not his own. He had gotten good over at employing spies over the centuries, often twisting their arms or promising them things that he only sometimes delivered on. When he had left the previous year, he had a being or two that kept watch over the town, sending him pertinent information for him to sift through.
Apparently, she was pertinent information.
To say that Klaus had known many witches over the years would be an understatement. He had a long history with the species, much of it negative but of course that didn't stop him from trying. He knew the value of a good witch when he saw one --- and he was in need of as many witches as he could get on his side with what might be coming. He had lost Davina in more ways than one. He may have plucked her out from underneath Marcel's nose but she had never been his biggest fan. Add to that, those that had helped her be the powerful witch she was were no longer bound to her. He had to wonder just what that did to her abilities (and yes, he was well aware that put him in the territory of only standing with someone while they were useful; he saw no shame in that).
This Cassie was one such soul that had been trapped through the Harvest Ritual. He was genuinely curious to meet her and only approached when he was sure that they would not be interrupted. He took in his surroundings, wrinkling his nose momentarily before moving towards her. She was young, he could see that. But Davina had been young too. He could feel her raw power (or maybe he only imagined such things because he was hopeful that this would become something worth his while).
Klaus put on his smile (which some might find a bit off putting). "Hello, love, I've heard things about you," he began, knowing damn well the nuance he had just introduced into the conversation before it even truly started. "I thought it was time we formally meet."

━ climb that goddamn mountain ━ MYSTIC FALLS REALLY WASN’T that awful. Getting her life back was probably the best gift Cassie had ever been given, and she didn’t intend on wasting it… even if she was spending most days working at a secretly-magic-pawn-shop and drooling over a vampire━a vampire. Who woulda thought, huh? But Linc was a sweetie pie and, now that she’d helped Hector conceal his vampire club with that spell, she could pretty much stop by whenever and not have to worry about getting munched on. (Unless Linc were to do the munching, then she wasn’t so hard-pressed about it.)
Though she’d never imagined that promising herself she wouldn’t waste life this time around would mean getting a part-time job, Nicky was a cool boss, and he was more trustworthy already than the rest of her coven. She knew that was an awful thought and felt guilty for even letting it cross her mind, but it was true. They were so keen to sacrifice Cassie and her friends (and Davina), but she knew she couldn’t blame them. It was the vampires’ fault, really, for stopping it all short. But, as Lawrence proved, not all vampires agreed with it, so she had no reason to fear Lincoln━she hoped.
In any case, Nicky helped her learn how to make daylight rings, and she really wanted to make one for Linc. There was… the whole I-see-dead-people thing, too, and Henrik would hopefully help her with that, maybe even give her some answers for Kace. Far be it for Cassie to trust a Mikaelson, but desperate times call for desperate measures or whatever. At least he brought them back, and seemed decently nice. Not like his brother. Cassie was almost glad she was an only child when she thought about that psycho.
Speak of the Devil. Just her luck, too, ‘cause it wasn’t as if Cassie spent all her time thinking about Niklaus Mikaelson. She should’ve known better; she probably freakin’ invoked him.
Cassie leaned against the counter at the front of the store, a few feet from the bell that dinged to announce his entry. She was probably the only non-Reid who’d manned the desk at a “Reid’s Pawn Shop” anywhere in the world, or so she assumed from Nicky’s stories. And, come to think of it, why was her life plagued with British people?
‘Hello, love, I've heard things about you,’
The bell hadn’t caught her attention, but his voice certainly did. Cassie’s head snapped up from the magazine she was idly flipping through on the counter, bored with celebrity gossip but unsure of how else to pass the time like a ‘regular’ teenager. As if she’d ever been that or would be again.
“Holy shit.” Came first, though it wasn’t exactly the firmest response, and her physical defence came second. This body may not have known him, had never been in the presence of Niklaus Mikaelson before now, but Cassie certainly did. Weeks spent in a double-prison of Davina’s body and Klaus’ home, dying to get out, to live her life again, to capture it for all it was worth. It hadn’t been much, but Cassie wanted to change that, and she had. Fear set her body in motion, shooting up straight and taking a few small steps back, putting distance between her, Klaus, and the display case acting as a barrier between them. “Really? ‘Cause I don’t. Like, I could’ve gone my whole life without thinking we should formally meet.”
Cassie felt it now, the same thing that’d washed over her when she touched the fire puppy━the Hellhound━and made her feel more scared than she ever wanted to be again. Death. Her death, specifically, so near and inevitable and fucking awful that Cassie was pretty sure she was gonna throw up. Maybe she could use it to her advantage; cast a spell, and have the vomit hurling at Klaus like a weapon. Ew.
“Get away from me. I’ll bring this whole ceiling down on you, asshole, I swear. Leave me alone. I don’t wanna talk to you, I don’t wanna help you, go away.” Cassie was trying for stern, strong, but a trembling fear had her hands shaking, overlaying her voice with a gentle quake. She didn’t know if her hatred was hers alone or partly Davina’s, what with the way he took strips off her, reducing her down to rubble. But she was weak, that’s what the ancestors said, and that’s what Cassie thought, too.
Cassie wouldn’t be weak━not anymore.

Friendly overtures (with cassie Luanna)
Her reaction was immediate --- and unexpected.
Klaus stood there with an almost perplexed look on his face as she spoke. Then he pursed his lips, trying to hold back the amusement that came soon after. He was surprised that that was the emotion running through him all things considered. "A rather rude beginning, don't you think?" he asked with a shrug of his shoulders. He was hardly deterred by her over the top reaction, let alone her not so subtle threats. "You should know that I have killed people for a lot less." A not so subtle threat of his own.
One he hoped that he wouldn't have to follow through on (he wasn't in the mood to kill a source of power on this night).
He realized that in a way he had already been introduced to her. What a strange thought. He was genuinely intrigued by it and he couldn't help but let that shine through for a moment. "What was it like? Seeing someone through another's eyes?" He then shook his head, as if he needed to remind himself that that was not why he was there in the first place. There were more important matters to discuss, even if she would rather he go as far away as possible.
He stepped further into the store, eyeing the items on the shelves with a hefty dose of judgement. To be honest, he would rather be as far away as possible from this place but she was here and he was interested in speaking to her. He kept a respectful distance from her not wanting to test the idea of the ceiling coming down on him. He was certain she was capable of it but he didn't much like the idea of picking plaster and dust out of his clothing.
"A bit dramatic but then again, if I had been in your shoes the last few years I might want to act out as well. Actually, come to think of it, I was once trapped too. Not in the same way of course but I do understand in a sense..." If his mother had had her way the wolf in him would still be bound, straining against the bounds her magic had placed on him. "I just want to talk. We can call it catching up if it helps. I hear you have been up to all kinds of things since breaking free."

━ climb that goddamn mountain ━ SHE WOULD’VE BEEN STUPID not to believe him or take his threat seriously. While this Mikaelson was a pain in her freakin’ side, she couldn’t discredit his power or his ability to run around like a killing machine, dropping bodies all willy-nilly. Fear shot straight up her spine; the idea of losing her life again brought on a sick feeling, a bad taste in her mouth. She was all alone here, save for any ghosts that wanted to pop up and help, in a place she wasn’t that accustomed to yet, and Cassie was pretty miffed about it.
God, she was screwed.
‘What was it like? Seeing someone through another’s eyes?’
When he said it, it almost felt like he was teasing her, still playing some sort of game where he rubbed it in her face. Before she could answer, Cassie’s vision went blurry with tears, though she cleared them quickly━she refused to spend even a second without her complete focus on him. “Awful.” But her emotions wouldn’t get in the way of her need to take a shot at him. “Especially when you kept us locked up and meddled with our magic for your own personal gain.” They could’ve taken him down, she thought, But Davina was weak, and they were stuck there for longer than need be. Same with Marcel, who started all this shit in the first place. Niklaus’ progeny. It all led back to him, didn’t it?
His step forward forced her to step back though he, thankfully, didn’t come too close. Klaus’s words, however, hit a sore spot, and Cassie’s thick, dark brows knotted together. “Dramatic?” She hissed, “I’m not being dramatic. You don’t get it; just ‘cause you had your furry side closed off for years doesn’t mean you have some kinda insight into what it’s like for your own coven to kill you and then get stuck in your ex-best friend’s body for, like, ever while some stupid, old vampires try to take advantage of you.” Her breathing was erratic by then, though Cassie desperately scrabbled at the edges of it, trying to get control with slow, deep breaths while her heart beat a mile a minute. She didn’t want to destroy Nicky’s shop, but she was sure he’d understand.
All kinds of things? Like what? Starting to help Mab with that coven stuff? Helping Hector? Oh, God, what the hell was he talking about? Cassie started skimming through every move she’d made since Henrik brought her back. The other girls had been kind of scarce so far, no big plans or whatever, but Monique seemed super interested in what the Ancestors wanted carried out. Cassie, however, just wanted a second chance at life.
“Yeah, you ever known anybody who wanted to ‘catch up’ with you?” Cassie frowned, “Things like what? Can you not do your creepy chit-chat beat-around-the-bush shit and just say what you wanna say? ‘Cause I really would rather not be near you right now. Or, like, ever.”

Friendly overtures (with cassie Luanna)
She heeded his warning. Sort of. He had to remind himself that she was an impulsive young thing, no doubt desperate to make up for lost time after all that had been taken from her. Although he could make sense of her behavior, that did not mean he would tolerate it indefinitely. He had always had such an interesting temper and right now, it lay just beneath the surface, pressing against its bounds in an attempt to prove that he was to be respected.
"I would apologize but we both know that I do not mean it. There is no sense in trading hollow words. I will say that my accommodations were better than that of Marcel's. A church attic? Really?" He had made sure Davina (and all the power she had inside of her) had been treated with a measure of respect despite her captivity. Apparently, Cassie was not appreciative of such things. "You are free now. Enjoying yourself."
He bristled a little at easily she brushed off the comparison. He thought it an apt one but apparently she wanted to play who's trauma was worse. "Not a coven know. My own father. My own father wants me dead. Hardly something to turn one's nose at but if you insist that you have been hard done by, who I am to argue? I am not interested in taking that road. After all, I said I wished to talk."
Cassie wanted no platitudes, no reading between the lines. She wanted him to speak plainly and he was surely able to do so. He took another step closer, his tone shifting to something more business like. "I meant what I said --- you have been enjoying yourself. I know this of course because I have made it my business to know. You have been practicing magic. Of course you are welcome to it --- it is in your blood. But if the rumors are true, you have been rather quiet about the whole thing. Is there someone you are worried will find out what you have been doing on the side? Or do you just not like to boast? Inquiring minds want to know."

━ climb that goddamn mountain ━ OKAY, SO HE WAS kinda right about a few things. Yeah, being locked up sucked, but at least Klaus was a little nicer━accommodations, just general treatment, whatever, but the bitterness was still ever-present. And she was sure his whole thing about his dad wanting to kill him was awful, too. If she had a dad, Cassie thought she might just be able to relate, but that was only ‘cause she was ignoring the hard truth. Her family sold her out, too━the ones she trusted most were those who pressured her onto the chopping block. It was supposed to be an honour to get chosen as a Harvest Girl, though her situation made it feel a lot like punishment. And maybe if it hadn’t gone the way it did, Cassie wouldn’t be dealing with so much trauma from it, but here she was, and she didn’t have any spells for changing the past.
‘... After all, I said I wished to talk.’
Unable to come up with an annoying and teenage-y retort, Cassie stayed quiet, giving him a simple eye-roll instead. The voice in the back of her mind was reminding her to be careful with this one, but she couldn’t find it in her to care. She’d fought tooth and nail for her freakin’ life back, and she wouldn’t stop fighting now just because she was a little scared.
Klaus had a point, though. Cassie wasn’t exactly sure where she stood on the whole ancestors and Davina-revenge-thing, and either he was just super intuitive (not unlikely), or she’d made it too obvious (also not unlikely). She frowned at him for a moment but soon realized it wasn’t in her best interest to lie. He’d probably hear her heartbeat and, not only that, but he’d decided on his point of view. Cassie was willing to bet she’d have a hard time convincing him otherwise.
“I just… look, if the ancestors find out we’re not one hundred million percent focused on our goal, they’ll get all pissy. And, like, I’m not the only Harvest Witch. It’s not just me getting distracted. Like you said, we’re just out here trynna enjoy life, and that shouldn’t be a crime.” Her frown deepened, growing agitated at the thought of what was to come━her duties and all that crap. “Why are you inquiring at all? Are you planning something against the coven? You need more help with a spell? Or just keeping your enemies closer?” Yeah, he said he just wanted to talk and inquire, but Cassie knew better than to believe that shit.

Friendly overtures (with cassie Luanna)
Ah, the teenage eyeroll.
A decade or so ago, he would have taken someone's head off for such a crime but instead he found himself almost rolling his eyes in return. He had a teenage daughter after all and although they were close, he had been on the receiving end of his fair share of eyerolls. At Cassie had graduated to that instead of continuing to hurl verbal vitriol in his direction. He had to give her some credit he supposed.
He doubted she had warmed up any to him. She seemed determined to hold someone accountable for all the woes of her life and he was an easy target. He was generally an easy target for most --- he was big, he was bad and he reveled in it. Therefore, if someone went wrong, throw at his feet. Never mind the fact that he wasn't always to blame.
Okay, he had some blame in this situation (not that he would admit it aloud).
Thankfully she did not dance around the subject and instead told him the truth. He could tell this sort of thing, especially in someone who would rather not be around him. Her heartbeat had not changed from the steady angry rhythm it had taken when she first laid eyes on him. "Ah, so you're still tied to that miserable coven. The one who tried to take your life. Actually, the one that succeeded in doing so for a time. Hardly seems fair but then again, I don't make it my business to understand witch politics," he mused aloud. He furrowed his brows a little when she pushed him to reveal the meaning of his visit.
Brazen little thing wasn't she?
Klaus took a deep breath and gave an easy roll of his shoulders. "You see, I have a knack for recognizing power. And you have power. I would like very much to be benefactor of said power but I realize it might not be the easiest sell. I am, if nothing else, a business man at heart. I can make you a deal. One that you will be happy with. No one has to know what you do here. No one has to know that you are simply living the life you were nearly robbed of. You can go about doing your business and I won't say a word. The cost? A spell or two every now and then. Hardly blood."

━ climb that goddamn mountain ━ ‘Ah, so you're still tied to that miserable coven…’
SHE SHOULD’VE BEEN OFFENDED, right? Even if Klaus was making a lot of good, solid points, she should’ve made the correct decision to start defending her coven. But Cassie didn’t. She just stayed quiet and hoped she wouldn’t cry. They’d taken her life and everybody could see how wrong that was━Kace, Lawrence, Nicky━it wasn’t just Klaus’ bias.
His offer was almost too good to be true. It was too good to be true; she was supposed to be making better decisions this time around, but now she was fraternizing with vampires, deviating from the ‘mission’ (whatever that was supposedta be), and working with (for) a witch outside of their coven. Cassie was already in deep shit if they ever figured out what she was doing, but Klaus’ offer would fix all that. Like Ariel signing Ursula’s contract, Cassie didn’t bother taking a moment to consider the fine print━what this deal might cost her. She only saw what she wanted. Linc was probably her Prince Eric, but he wasn’t everything. Being with him meant she had the freedom to be, and that was the ultimate goal. It wasn’t as simple as teenage ambition and angst, sneaking out and defying your parents’ rules. She literally died━Cassie blew her first chance at life and couldn’t risk doing that again.
Klaus was right. She was nearly robbed of her life, and she freakin’ deserved this! Plus, a spell every once in a while? Cassie could do that easy-peasy-lemon-squeezy. It would keep her in tip-top shape, anyway━like weight lifting for a witch.
“Fine.” Cassie nodded firmly, “That sounds… fine. We’ll do that, just promise not to freakin’ lock me up again, okay? ‘Cause then our deal’s off and I will bring the ceiling down on your freakin’ head. Maybe not this one, but still.” Still somewhat irritated and miffed, she huffed out a breath, hoping he’d just leave. Klaus was still Klaus, he made her super-duper uncomfortable, and maybe some part of her agreed to the deal because she wanted him out of there. She also couldn’t imagine what kind of big spells he’d need, but she’d worry about that later. For now, she was just buzzing on the idea of doing what she wanted whenever she wanted.

Friendly overtures (with cassie Luanna)
The fact that she didn't leap to her coven's defense was telling. Klaus would use that to continue to twist the knife if necessary. He was not above such things (in fact there were very few things that he was above at this point in his life; how else would he have gotten to these heights?). He would follow through on any threat too. If she didn't want to play nice with him, he saw no reason to play nice with her. It was just how he was built. Expecting better of him was a ridiculous notion.
Thankfully she was willing to playing along.
Klaus nodded his head, his look a playful turn on gratefulness. As if he had truly been on pins and needles for her answers. He would not have to up the ante as it were. The terms he had laid out were fair enough to Cassie. Perfect. He could even be home for dinner.
He congratulated himself for such an easy find but hinted nothing at his smugness to her. The last thing he needed was for her to change her mind on some sort of warped idea that she was principled. The smartest people living today were alive because they saw morals for what they were --- a ploy to hold you back.
"You have yourself a deal," Klaus said as if his word truly meant anything. He dipped his head a little, a nod to their mutual understanding. "And as I do not want any ceilings in on this head of mine, I will do my best abide by our terms." There was a reason that he didn't just wholeheartedly agree. He wanted some part of her on edge, as if one day he could walk into this place and do just that. "I will see you soon. Have a pleasant evening."
