Bittersweet Homecoming (with Hope Mikaelson) Deep down, Klaus Mikaelson was terrified. It was not an emotion that he felt often in life, having grown accustomed to being the alpha in every sense of the word. That was not to say that he had never been afraid. There were moments where he had been crippled by the sensation but they were few and far between that he was loathed to even admit they had occurred in the first place. But that didn't change the fact that here and now, he was truly afraid of what would happen next.
He had been away too long.
Klaus understood that on the surface. He had left Mystic Falls for Europe in hopes of coming back triumphantly with the hybrids he needed to ensure that no one would ever touch his family. When that didn't happen as smoothly as he had assumed it would, he had stayed on further, slipping back into habits familiar to him when he had been thwarted. A fair number of innocent lives were lost in the name of Klaus' feelings of failure. Then he had stayed away because he had been away for longer than he should have. There was a growing part of him that was worried at the reception he would receive from family once he returned to Mystic Falls.
(Hope; he was was worried what Hope must thing of him now).
In the end, he came back because in many ways he needed them more than they needed him. He would never admit it aloud of course, he was far too proud (and there was that small sliver of him that worried one day they wouldn't need him at all).
As soon as he arrived in Mystic Falls, there was only one place he wanted to be. One person he needed to see. Almost as if drawn to his daughter, Klaus ignored all other distractions until he was standing mere feet from Hope. Her back was turned and for a moment that fear welled to new heights. He worried she would hate him and he did not know if he could handle that.
Taking a deep breath, he finally spoke, his voice cutting through the silence in the room. "Hope..."

━ the heart wants what it wants━
Hope released a small sigh as she stared at the blank canvas right before her eyes. She had lost her muse the second her dad left. It happened without a warning and no matter how hard she tried to coax it out even with a stroke of a brush, it never came back to her. It was like there was a void in her mind that almost resembled the voice in her heart that was left behind by her dad. She missed him, she missed him a lot. She doubted she could even put it into words just how much she missed him.
Hope often thought about how she would react if her dad were to abruptly make his way back into her life. She visualized herself being angry at him, but that almost seemed ... impossible. That version of herself felt so faraway from her true self, so maybe not that. Maybe she'd cry, but then again, it just didn't seem like her. Hope had visualized it more than once and each time, she'd open her eyes and wait anxiously for her father to make an entrance, even if it was a tad bit dramatic, she'd take it. She'd take anything if it meant seeing him again. But everything would simply remain the same.
And she hated it.
Hope really wanted her dad back. She missed the sound of his voice, missed his warmth. She missed him and there was nothing that she could do to bring him back home. He needed to come back on his own, without being forced or coaxed. So she knew that waiting was all that she could do in that moment even if she was sick of waiting already.
Hope snapped out of her thoughts when she heard a very familiar voice and it made her stop and slowly move the brush, releasing it from her grip. She turned around almost right away, her eyes widening slightly as they immediately relaxed on the familiar figure of none other than her dad. Almost right away, she found herself wanting to say so many things but she felt as if she couldn't even speak. It was like her voice had picked that exact moment to just disappear.
Hope's eyes glistened with tears and she should have known, she should have known that the version of herself that cried upon seeing her dad was the one closest to reality. "Dad..." Hope breathed out, her eyes focused solely on him, afraid that if she looked away for even a second, the man would simply vanish. "You're back..." She took a step closer to her dad before she quickly closed the remaining distance between them, her arms immediately wrapping around her dad. "And you're okay..." Hope released a shaky breath, momentarily holding onto her dad a little tighter than necessary before her hold quickly loosened. "I was really worried about you."

Bittersweet Homecoming (with Hope Mikaelson) She was painting --- or about to, the blank canvas a testament to that. He couldn't help but think of all the moments they had done so together. In fact some of his fondest memories involved his daughter and their mutual love of art. He had always been so inspired by her (but then again, she had struck that inspiration in him from the moment he first gathered her into his arms, tiny thing that she was).
There was no going back as soon as he spoke. He braced himself for whatever was to come next. He could see the momentarily surprise on her face followed by tears welling in her eyes. The sight of them stabbed at him. "No, no, don't cry..." Somewhere along the way he had made a promise that she would never have reason to cry. It had been a foolish vow because one could not escape their emotions no matter how hard they tried (and Klaus had tried).
He was about to launch into the first of a thousand apologies but she had her arms around him before he could even speak. For a moment he stood there absolutely stunned. He had expected anger and prepared himself for it. To find his homecoming was greeted with the opposite reaction threw him for a loop. Then he realized that if the situations were reversed, he would be the one reacting with those negative emotions. He would be digging in heels and refusing to show his relief and happiness at their return. He had done it before and there was no guarantee that he wouldn't do it in the future.
He could learn so much from Hope.
Klaus finally wrapped his arms around his daughter, one hand coming to cup the back of her head. His eyes closed as he felt a measure of peace for the first time in months. He had needed this moment more than he ever realized. There was something about being with his daughter that grounded him completely and made him realize what was important.
When she pulled away he snapped back to attention, dipping his head before shaking it at her words. "I am fine, little one. Absolutely fine --- especially now that I am here with you," he assured her, reaching up to stroke a hand over her cheek as if the physical contact could assure her that he was speaking the truth. "You were worried? You needn't have been. I can take care of myself." She knew that and yet still worried --- that touched something in him that he hadn't considered before. "It was I that worried about you. I should have come home sooner. I can only beg forgiveness for that." There were very few people that could invoke such a statement from him and she was at the top of the list.

No, no, don't cry...
Hope sniffed and wiped away her tears before she wrapped her arms around her dad again. "M'not crying." She whispered, not wanting her dad to beat himself up for making her cry. "I'm just really happy to see you." She admitted, feeling a small smile touch her lips at the feeling of her dad's familiar warmth that used to lull her to sleep when she was a kid. She missed him. She was almost tempted to pinch herself just to make sure that she wasn't dreaming right now, but she was aware that she wasn't. It felt too real to be a dream.
I am fine, little one. Absolutely fine --- especially now that I am here with you, You were worried? You needn't have been. I can take care of myself.
A small smile tugged at the corner of Hope's lips at her dad's words, her eyes scanning his expression for a moment but also trying to see if she could unravel just what had happened during the time her dad was away but she couldn't. "I'm glad that you're here." She was aware that it was nearly impossible to harm her dad with him being the Original Hybrid, but she still couldn't help but worry about him. The feeling of her dad's hand against her cheek seemed to soothe the storm raging within her. He's really okay. For a moment, Hope closed her eyes and allowed herself to release a sigh of relief. "I couldn't help it." Hope revealed, her eyes focusing on her dad's once again. "I know, I know... But still━ I couldn't stop myself from worrying about you. I didn't know if you were sleeping well or if you were eating well." Hope had too many unanswered questions circling her mind at night, almost making her unable to fall asleep.
It was I that worried about you. I should have come home sooner. I can only beg forgiveness for that.
"I'm okay, don't worry. I had my uncles and aunties keeping me safe." She assured her dad with a soft voice. Her eyes widened slightly at her dad's words. Beg for forgiveness? "No, dad, I forgive you. I honestly forgave you the second that you left. How could I not? You were doing this for our sake, to protect us." Hope just couldn't bring herself to be angry at her dad because she knew that he was doing this for her sake and for the sake of the other kids, too. "All that matters is that you're home now, dad. That's honestly all I care about." Hope's lips stretched to form a sincere smile, her softening eyes relaxing upon her dad, any traces of tears in them long gone.

Bittersweet Homecoming (with Hope Mikaelson) As much as she wanted to profess that she wasn't crying, he could tell otherwise and it was provoking a similar response in him. He could feel the tears burning in his eyes and took a deep breath to avoid letting them build up. He hated to cry; there was a certain vulnerability in it that was not a state he was used to being in. His dislike of the action had never stopped him before and it might not stop him now.
She was happy to see him.
Klaus tried to remember a time when someone had had a similar reaction and could only come up with a handful (different siblings, different days, different situations --- there was never any consistency and he supposed that was due to his actions towards them). Hope had always been happy to see him. She was the one consistent thing in his life and he was glad that his actions had not cost him that. He was not sure he could take it.
"I am happy too," he confessed. "More than you can understand." She only knew bits and pieces of his past; the story was far too vast to tell in completion. His daughter --- she was definitely the one thing that made everything that had come before worth it. "You would be happy to know that I slept and ate well." Probably too well considering the bodies he had left in his wake. Hope did not need to know the count or the anger (the failure) that had driven him to it. She just needed to know that he was as he appeared to her now: happy and healthy.
"I do hope that your doting aunts and uncles were not too stifling. I know how Elijah can be a stick in the mud at times." All times come to think of it. But there was no one else that he trusted more to watch over his daughter in his absence.
The tears did come now. He had no barrier to hold them back. Hearing her forgiveness opened the gates and he quickly swiped at them, almost in anger that he had been reduced to them. But then remembered they were born of love and pulled back. "I do not deserve you, Hope but I am glad that I have you. I promise that from here on out, I am not going anywhere."

I am happy too, More than you can understand. You would be happy to know that I slept and ate well.
Hope felt her lips spread into an honest smile. I'm happy too. Such a simple sentence but it was more than enough to make something bloom in the pit of her stomach and she had no doubt that it was nothing but sheer happiness. Her eyes remained fixed on her dad, still unable to let go of that irrational fear that if she were to ever look away, he'd vanish in an instant. She had that happen countless times in her dreams and when she'd wake up, she'd find herself feeling sadder and sadder. But now, she was more than relieved that she'll never have to experience that feeling again. "That does make me happy. I'm glad you took care of yourself, dad." Hope often times found herself worried about her dad, worried that he wasn't taking care of himself well enough, worried that he was too busy putting them first that he was forgetting to do the same for himself, too. He was just as important.
I do hope that your doting aunts and uncles were not too stifling. I know how Elijah can be a stick in the mud at times.
Hope let out a chuckle at her dad's words before her shoulders lifted and dropped in a quick shrug. "No, no, they weren't. Don't worry. I know they're doing it with the best intentions of mind, so it's pretty easy for me to not get ... angsty about it."
I do not deserve you, Hope but I am glad that I have you. I promise that from here on out, I am not going anywhere.
Hope's eyes widened when she noticed the tears in her dad's eyes, it was more than enough to make her heart feel like it was enclosed in a tight grasp. She could feel her eyes filling up with tears as well but she blinked a few times to not risk crying in front of her dad. "You do, dad. You deserve me. I just wish you could see what I see when I look at you." Hope's lips stretched to form a soft smile, her words were sincere as always and she meant every word. "Thank you, dad." Hope reached out to grasp her dad's hand in her own, giving it a gentle squeeze. "I'm not going anywhere, either." She added a moment later. "I'll always be here, with you and mom." Hope released her dad's hand and took a look behind her at the empty canvas.
"Um, I have a request." Hope's blue eyes settled on her dad again. "Now that you're back..." Hope trailed off before pulling her bottom lip between her teeth in an anxious bite. "Do you wanna paint with me? I don't know what I wanna paint yet, but I have a feeling that a session with you would definitely help."

Bittersweet Homecoming (with Hope Mikaelson) In a way he felt as if he had just lied to her. Did indulging in the animalistic side of himself count as self care? Some would not agree but others might point out that it was better that he got it all out of his system before he came back to Mystic Falls. He could not afford to allow his rage and instinct control him. Not with the threats that circled his family. He needed a clear head to plan and react accordingly. In that way, Klaus was able to justify staying away as long as he had.
"We differ in that regard, I am afraid. I have been known to get terribly angsty when my siblings tell me they have the best of intentions," he told her with a small smile. It was meant to be a hint of humor, something he felt comfortable using now that he knew she was not going to reject him. It had been his greatest fear the last few days as he prepared to return. It had even invaded his sleep. Within seconds she had taken that fear from him and crumbled it to pieces --- such was the power that she had over him. She probably didn't even really know it.
He bowed his head a little as she set about using that power to convince him that he did, in fact, deserve her. He was not sure that even she had that much influence but he nodded his head anyway, not wanting to argue. She only knew a fraction of his crimes --- there was a very good reason for him to wonder what he had done along the way that gave him the right to have someone like her in his life. He should be alone, not standing toe to toe with his daughter.
Klaus squeezed his daughter's hand in return, a sign that he had heard her even if he was not willing to comment on it for fear that he would disagree. Instead he focused on moving forward. His eyes moved beyond her to the canvas. He hadn't touched a brush since leaving town. Maybe he had left his muse behind with his family. He wasn't sure it was ready to come out of hiding yet but he would try for her sake. "Of course I will. We can figure out what to fill the blank spaces with together," he began, looking back to her. "And you can catch me up on what has been going on with your life as we do so. You know I want to hear everything."

━ the heart wants what it wants━
We differ in that regard, I am afraid. I have been known to get terribly angsty when my siblings tell me they have the best of intentions,
Hope chuckled at that, having heard a couple of stories from aunt Rebekah about that side of her father. "Yeah, I know. Aunt Bex told me about a few of your angsty moments." Hope recalled the conversation all too well and just how her aunt sounded like when she talked about those moments. It almost made her chuckle again. "Should I enter my angsty phase now so we could be more alike?" Hope teased with a grin resting on her lips.
Of course I will. We can figure out what to fill the blank spaces with together, And you can catch me up on what has been going on with your life as we do so. You know I want to hear everything.
Hope had a feeling that her dad wanted to protest a couple of times but held himself back each time and while she wanted to dig deeper into what had happened, she didn't. She wanted him to tell her on his own time, if he ever chooses to. She didn't want to be the source of a headache for him. Hope beamed when her dad agreed to paint with her. "Okay. Deal." She replied when her dad told her that they can figure out what to fill the blank spaces with together. She reached over to pick up her palette, returning to her old task of mixing colors. "Oh, I know." She chuckled as she finally added color to the otherwise blank canvas. "Okay, so..." Hope pondered, unsure where to start, her hand halting for a moment or so. "I practiced some of my magic with Uncle Henrik. I know quite a lot of spells now, so I can protect you if we ever find ourselves in danger." Hope said with a proud smile forming on her lips, looking quite happy with that. She was more than aware that her dad could protect himself, he was the Original Hybrid, after all. But she still couldn't help but want to protect him.
"Then, I started volunteering at an animal shelter with Josie. It's been really fun, actually. I have to physically stop myself from protecting the animals there." Hope said with a chuckle falling from her lips, recalling the one time a small kitten laid on her lap, all curled up and purring. It was a moment that nearly made her heart burst with happiness.
"Something else happened while you were gone..." Hope hesitated for a moment, though her hand continued moving, gradually filling up her canvas with bright colors. "My friend, Raf. He was attacked by somebody. It was exactly what had happened to me that made me trigger my curse. I helped him but he died with my blood in his system later on and he's now my first hybrid." Hope bit down on her bottom lip as her eyes left the canvas she was working on to look over at her dad. "I should have been more careful with my blood, I know. Aunt Bex gave me a lecture about it, but I just couldn't let him die. He needed it and I would do it over and over again if it means that he gets to live." Hope gnawed on her inner cheeks, momentarily lost in her thoughts before her lips finally parted. "Does that make me a bad person?"

Bittersweet Homecoming (with Hope Mikaelson) "Your aunt Rebekah has been telling you stories?" he questioned with a raise of his eyebrow. He could only guess just what kind of stories Rebekah would tell. She would have plenty to choose from and not all would show him in a favorable light, especially given that it was his daughter that was listening to such things. "Perhaps I need to have a word with my dear sister to ensure that she is not telling lies." He would not have Hope hearing the long list of his crimes, unless he felt it necessary to tell her. He frowned a little at her attempt at humor, knowing that it was harmless but still hating the idea of Hope having angst over anything. "No, no, I think not, little wolf. You see, the pieces I created during that time --- I am sure they would be called pretentious by today's art critics. You are better off painting with what is in your heart at any given moment."
He came to stand with her at the canvas, watching her mix colors and finally bring some life to the otherwise white surface. He found himself fascinated by what her process might be and therefore became more of an observer than an active participant for now. He took a deep breath at the thought of her practicing magic but in the end, he told himself it needed to happen. She had the power in her. She should know how to use it instead of tucking it away and hoping it won't cause problems. Still, the desire to keep her far away from all of those things was strong. "I am glad that Uncle Henrik was your guide. He is a good one to lead you down that path but you needn't protect me. It is I who will protect you --- it is my job as a father after all," he reminded her with a pointed look. He would not allow her throw herself in front of him in any fight. That was not her place.
Thankfully the conversation turned towards what he had missed. He listened with an smile on his face, that grew at some points and waned at others. Of course Hope would love animals. "Josie is the daughter of Alaric, is she not?" An odd connection given he doubted Alaric would want his children anywhere near Klaus (and Hope was one degree anyway from the hybrid, wasn't she?).
Then came the confession. Klaus had never been sure if she was capable of making a hybrid. She was so unique, one of a kind. He had often thought of it but never could know the answer until it actually happened. It appeared it had. He took a deep breath, reaching over to touch his daughter's face once more. It was clear that she was questioning herself. "It does not, my darling girl," he assured her. "What you did, you did out of loyalty and love of your friend. Those are hardly the qualities of a monster." His own hybrids had been made out of necessity and a desire to have an army. He never gave them a choice and in many cases he had been the cause of their death. If anyone was the monster it was him. "You did what you thought was right and you should not regret it. That does not mean that you do it again and again because Rebekah is right in some regard --- you have to be careful."

━ the heart wants what it wants━
Hope nodded her head with a soft chuckle falling from her lips. "She has. Don't worry, she only ever told me because I kept asking and insisting. I can be pretty convincing when I want to be." She wanted to know about her dad and only upon learning more about him did she learn that the rumors at school were wrong. Her father was no monster, but a family man who cared deeply about his family and wished to protect them at all cost. "Oh god, did I just get my aunt in trouble? I promise she didn't paint you in a bad picture. If anything, she helped me get to know you more." Hope promised with a gentle smile tugging at her lips, her eyes focused on her dad, watching him for a moment. When her attempt at humor resulted in her dad advising her not to go through her own little angsty phase, her expression softened. "Thank you, dad." Hope replied, her voice soft. "But just to let you know, you were never painted as the bad guy in my picture. You ━" Hope trailed off for a moment, unsure how to convey her feelings and thoughts properly and make them sound coherent enough. "You're the good guy." Hope said instead, her voice laced with sincerity.
Hope's smile returned to her lips as she processed her dad's words before she nodded her head a few times. "I feel pretty safe, knowing that I have you as my dad." She revealed a moment later, her eyes leaving the canvas to settle on her dad before she brought her attention back to her canvas, continuing the gentle but determined strokes of her hand. "But, I guess at the same time, I also want to make sure that you know that you're protected too. I'd never want to lose you. Ever." Hope was aware that her dad was more than capable of protecting himself, but she didn't want him to feel like he was alone in the battle, or that his safety did not matter just because he was very powerful. Hope would gladly put her life on the line for her father and while her dad had his issues with his siblings, she had a feeling they'd do the exact same thing. He's family, after all.
Hope nodded her head at her dad's question. "Yeah, that's her." She revealed with a hint of softness in her voice. Though the conversation soon took a turn as she revealed what had happened to her close friend, Rafael. It made her hand stop with the strokes, the canvas left half-finished as she turned her attention to her dad, worried she'll see disappointment in his eyes but instead, she found nothing but comfort as her shoulders sagged in relief. She'd been worried that her actions had been selfish but the way her dad spoke with such certainty made her realize that she had only given her blood to Rafael because she truly cared about her friend and if she had been a monster, she would have looked the other way and let her friend die. But no. "Thank you." Hope replied in a soft voice. "I will be." Hope nodded her head with determination lacing her words. "I promise." She added a moment later, wanting her dad to know that she won't be going around giving out her blood. She'd only use it when it was absolutely necessary, that was a promise she was more than willing to keep. "That's all, I guess. Not very eventful, except the whole hybrid thing. What about you? Can you share some stories with me about your time away?" Hope glanced over at her dad curiously, eager to see if he had stories he wanted to share with her.

Bittersweet Homecoming (with Hope Mikaelson) "Believe me when I say that your aunt doesn't need you to get in trouble. But you needn't worry. I am only teasing. Just as I will only tease my sister." Easy for him to say but he knew the reality of the situation. The pair of them would end up at one another's throats sooner or later. That was just how they operated. "I am glad that she could be of help --- although I know that seeing me through her eyes is a bit complicated at best." They had hurt one another throughout the years but they also loved one another too. Fiercely it seemed.
Hearing that he was not a villain in her story gave him pause. He stood there quietly for a moment, knowing that the emotions would be raw on his face. That was all he wanted. He would do so much for the girl in front of her. He would do just about anything. If you would have asked him a century ago that he would find himself in such a position he would have laughed it off. He would have seen it as a weakness but he knew now that she was a strength. She pushed him to be versions of himself that he never thought possible. He owed a great deal to her.
"That's all I ever want to be for you, little wolf," he confessed quietly. "Someone that loves you more than I can ever explain. Someone that would do anything for you. I am glad that you know that." That would never change no matter the challenge he faced. Hope would be his constant.
There was a hint of his old arrogance on his face when she spoke of ensuring that he was protected. He was the alpha. The first of his kind and one of the strongest beings alive. The urge to point that out was strong but he knew it was not necessary. He could be hurt, he could fall but he would never stay down. "You will not lose me. I promise you that." He was never one for vows. He left that to Elijah but he felt safe in making that abundantly clear to his daughter. He would be standing beside her in this world until there was no world left to hold onto them. That he was sure of.
"It is strange...you and a hunter's daughter. That is something that I will have to wrap my head around. Tell me, what does Alaric think of this connection the two of you have?" He couldn't picture it receiving the other man's seal of approval. It was tempting to withdrawal his own but he realized he could never deny his daughter anything. He hoped that she never caught onto that fact.
When the tables were turned on his time away, he thought of the chaos that he had caused in Europe and how he had not come back empty handed, although he failed to grow his hybrid army in the way he wished to. He could not tell his daughter the entire truth but he could share enough of it to sate her curiosity.
"I went looking for wolves. Others to join the army that protects the Mikaelson clan. There are packs roaming the forests of Croatia that are fierce. Well known for their ability to fight. I was hoping to entice them into my ranks." He thought of the cold welcome he had received. "It did not go entirely as I planned I am afraid. But I rethought my strategies and I have other ways of ensuring that no one will hurt our family."
