Trick-or-treating in their neighbourhood wasn’t exactly safe, as the boys were more likely to be handed a syringe rather than a piece of candy. Their mom would bundle the brothers into the car and take them to the nicer areas. The type of neighbourhoods that had money and were happy to dish out a few pieces of candy. Then there were the decorations, which had Raik pressed hard against the car window as they drove the streets. It was truly breathtaking as a child and a whole different world compared to where they came from. A place where you couldn’t put a pumpkin outside without it being stolen within 10 minutes. Lunara would stand at the end of the driveway ushering her children up to the door in their matching outfits. Walking side by side with their plastic pumpkins knocking together. Raik loved matching with his brother, Remzi however didn’t. His brother was always the first to knock on the door, beating Raik to it every single time. His love for Halloween was still buried deep down in there but something he was saving for his children. Cosy nights with his family carving pumpkins and watching scary movies. It was something that his heart ached for in the future. There was none of that this year though. It was the complete opposite as he was standing inside the Ruby Slipper club already a few drinks deep. The alcohol chipped away at him slowly, relaxing his body with each sip. It was difficult to tell who was his age and who was still a college student. Naturally, he found his eyes wandering to the girls who had opted for little clothing, part of his mind wondering how cold they were. It was freezing outside but like the females he too was wearing his beer jacket which wasn’t needed inside as it was melting. The green paint that covered his face wasn’t helping either. Remzi tried to convince Raik to paint his body and go topless, but there was a line for him. Of course, he wanted to draw in the females, but not with his bare chest. Raik leaned on the door, ordering another drink. He’d lost sight of Remzi at least 45 minutes ago. He pushed his concerns out of his head, trying to enjoy his night. He even scanned the dance floor to see if he could spot Phoebe, but with the mixture of masks and face paint, it was difficult. One thing that wasn’t difficult to spot was his brother through the crowd. Raik quickly grabbed his drink from the bar before weaving his way through the bodies to Remzi. He tugged at his brother’s arm, pulling him back a little, “I’ve been looking for you!” He spoke loudly over the music, “Where…” He frowned, as he studied Remzi under the flashing lights, “Remzi that better be fake blood on your face” Finger crossed he’d just been kissing someone. ━ like sisyphus pushing that rock uphill, or echo falling for a daffodil ━ REMZI HAD SPENT MOST of the last week (or more) drunk on either alcohol or blood, sitting through that swirling feeling he loved to chase as a human, drowning in the adrenaline. It made him feel alive… and forget about Leah. He didn’t want to feel guilt or, God, even fucking worse, care. He couldn’t even fathom that L-Word yet.
Leah’s shit was not his shit. He shouldn’t have to care.
The Halloween Party was just another excuse. Remzi had been the Ruby Slipper’s best customer for a while now, here or downstairs almost every night. The drinks (and women) were plentiful, and they made it easier to sift through that inner pain he hated to feel. His mom would’ve told him to pray on it.
He engaged in some sort of meditation, those few seconds of bliss when he forgot who Leah was, and a lot of chicks liked to touch his Nazar charm. That was about as close as Remzi got to talking to God.
Would he even listen to a dead guy?
It didn’t matter. Shortly after getting through the door, he lost his shirt, leaving him in just pants and a dark, faux fur cape. It was wet and matted now, but the deep red splotches weren’t visible on anything but his skin. Women used Halloween as an invitation to come up and touch him, and he’d had at least a few tonight in the dark corners of the bar━draining them of blood or otherwise. Sometimes both. Remzi’s fangs were on full display most of the time, and chicks laughed and asked if he was supposed to be a True Blood-esque ‘Viking vampire’. He usually laughed at whatever they said. He wasn’t listening; he wasn’t even there. Not really.
‘I’ve been looking for you!’
It was then that Remzi remembered he’d come with Raik. On his way to grab another drink, fangs tucked away for now━just in case anybody got smart in the light of the bar. Turning his blue eyes to his brother, Remzi could barely focus on him but tried anyway. He grinned lazily, lifting a hand to smear around some of that blood on his cheek, glance at his palm, then lick it off. “Yeah, fake blood. Tastes awful.” He chuckled, looking at his bare chest before swiping his hand there, too, and repeating the same process. “It’s all fake. It’s Halloween, Raik! Want a drink?” Remzi leaned into a free spot on the bar with one elbow, nodding upwards at the bartender, then at two girls sitting directly in front of him. They were dressed (if you could call it that) as witches, he could only tell by their pointy hats.
“Hey,” Remzi grinned, “You witches need some replacement broomsticks tonight? The Hulk here’s up for the job,” Reaching over, he patted Raik’s shoulder, grinning wildly. “I’d have to offer up myself, too,” His gaze jumped from Raik back to the girls. “Not a superhero, but I promise I’ve got a big axe.” And, just for demonstration, he pulled the thing up from over his shoulder, showing them the weapon, mostly plastic, but an axe all the same━good enough for his joke, anyway. The girls giggled, and Remzi shot his brother a dopey smile, wondering if this night would be anything like when he was turned. Had they had one like that since? Nah, he thought, It’d been too long, and this was the perfect excuse.

Sometimes it was the first born's job to test their parents. See how far they could push them before the second child was born and got away with everything. Raik never pushed the boundaries, in fact, he never even came close. He left all that to Remzi. The only times he found himself grounded was when his younger brother was somehow involved. Convincing him to sneak out the house after curfew or when he got caught eating a sausage roll because Remzi convinced him to. There was no denying their parents had a soft spot for their youngest son. He needed that element of nurturing more than Raik. Still didn’t stop their mom from sobbing when he announced he was joining the military and was going to be shipped off halfway across the world, into a warzone. Luna feld a warzone before her sons were born. She knew how unsafe they were but it didn’t deter Raik. There was never a wave of second guessing his choices, even when he stepped off the plane the other side into chaos. The music thumped through his body as he stood searching for his brother. Before he’d have been concerned with his brother’s wellbeing, watching that he didn't get too drunk or high, but now he was worried about the wellbeing of those around him. If his brother did lose control Raik wasn’t strong enough to hold him back anymore. Relief washed over him when he spotted his brother, but narrowing his eyes as he insisted it was fake blood that coated his body. A low hum in his throat. An indication of doubt. Raik glanced down at his drink for a moment, taking a large mouthful of the double rum and coke. He was so highly strung since his brother was turned, albeit some of the anxiety would fade away with enough alcohol. He looked back up at his brother, “Please don’t bite people tonight. You need to be more careful especially after all that shit that went down with the cops. They know your face… they know my face too” He knew his brother would heed no warning and his concerns would be dismissed. Raik was too busy checking out the selection of spirits when his brother spoke to two girls across the bar. Witches by the looks of it. A sheepish smile at them both as Remzi threw out a joke about a broomstick. “Evening girls” He gave them both a polite nod. That squeaky clean image he’d been persevering for years was slowly wearing away thanks to his brother's influence. Alcohol, illicit substances and one-night stands. It’s something he’d never thought he’d partake in. The girls were giggling as Remzi pulled the axe from behind his back, causing Raik to also laugh. It was on the tip of his tongue to invite the girls to join them for a drink, but he glanced over at his brother. What if they were his next victim? They were clearly interested in the brothers, giggling and whispering amongst themselves. “We’ll come and join you for a drink later” Maybe. He watched as the witches disappeared off into the crowd, giving them both a cheerful smile and wave before snapping back to Remzi with a more sombre look, “Can you promise me you’ll be on your best behaviour tonight? None of this vampire shit or being stupid” He shouldn’t have to be having this conversation. The pair weren’t 21 anymore , “Let’s just have fun like old times” Like when Remzi was alive. Raik pulled his eyes away from Remzi as the bartender approached the pair, “Double rum and coke for me”REMZI DURMAZ

━ like sisyphus pushing that rock uphill, or echo falling for a daffodil ━ OF COURSE RAIK HAD to ruin their chance at getting lucky. He couldn’t fuckin’ believe it while those girls were walking away, disappearing into the crowd and away from them after Raik practically dismissed them. Twisting until his back was leaning against the bar, the thick edge pressed horizontally across his spine, Remzi nodded upwards at them and grinned, causing another burst of giggles to erupt between them. At least he’d have something for later if Raik continued his work towards the Buzzkill of the Year award.
Frowning back at his brother’s seriousness, Remzi rolled his eyes and huffed, settling back with both elbows on the bar. Usually, he’d conjure up some bullshit for his brother the same way Remzi did with their mom, but he couldn’t find any care left in him. Nothing mattered anymore━less than it ever had. “The last time we had fun like old times was the night we brought two girls home. You remember what happened to me?” He puffed, “That’s the only kind of fun worth having anymore.” Bitterly, Remzi tucked his axe back in its holster but stayed surveying the crowd for a moment. A hundred or more pumping hearts━his for the taking. “Cops don’t really know shit.”
A sudden sense washed over him, and he knew in an instant that she was there. Brows furrowing, Remzi straightened up to stand without the help of the counter, blue eyes darting over the crowd with urgency now. He found her in a matter of moments, blonde hair looking smooth enough to run his fingers through, to grip in his hand and wrap around his fist. But she wasn’t alone, and she didn’t want him anymore. He couldn’t walk up and tear her away from that guy as he had in the summer━they weren’t that anymore.
Cursing under his breath, Remzi turned to face the bartender finally, agitated right down to his core. He wanted to drain someone immediately━as if he hadn’t heard Raik’s words whatsoever. “Grab us some shot glasses, salt, lime. Leave the bottle of tequila.” The bartender took only one glance before starting to work on the bulk order, producing a machine somewhere in the mix for advanced payment. Leaning forward, Remzi caught her eye, double-checked her heartbeat, and then started in. “You won’t need payment for this or anything else me and my brother order.” She gave a simple nod in agreement and removed the machine with a small look of confusion as to why she’d put it out in the first place.
Pleased with himself, Remzi’s glower was replaced with a sly smile, and he turned to Raik with it proudly on display. “Like old times, but better.”

He understood (as best he could) that Remzi’s personality traits were ‘heightened’, whatever that meant. All those bad traits had been increased and who knows to what extent. The reckless behaviour had been put on high, even though Raik didn’t think it was possible to be any more reckless than Remzi already was. The dishonesty, the lying, the addictive behaviour. All of that was turned up. That is what terrified Raik. Before he could handle his sibling, but slowly he was losing his grip and it was heartbreaking to see Remzi go through it all. But he had to keep trying, even if he was fighting a losing battle. One that was leaving him exhausted at the end of every day. His warning words went through one ear and out the other. He couldn’t give up on Remzi, no matter how much of a dick he could be. Even though the bad traits had been amplified, then his good ones must have too. The ones that made Remzi a good person, deep down. Raik was clinging onto that. Raik shot a look at Remzi, a deep frown forming on his face, “Of course, I remember what happened. You fucking died, eşek” That wasn’t fun, at all. The night cost him his brother’s human life and exposed the pair to a world they never knew existed. He exhaled harshly as his brother glossed over the cop comment. There was no reasoning with his brother when he was like this and the best thing to do was to let it lie. “I need a drink” He muttered, trying to change the subject, eyes scanning for the bartender. He noticed his sibling bolt upright, his eyes elsewhere. Searching the crowd for something. Someone. Dark eyes followed his brother’s gaze, trying to search for whoever he was looking at, “What’s up?” His eyes darted through the crowd until he recognized someone he knew. Someone they both knew. Leah. Her arms draped around the neck of another man, the pair dancing closely. No space between their bodies. “Is that Leah?” Raik exclaimed, looking back at Remzi. It was, he could tell by the look on his brother’s face. “Did you know she was here? Is that why you wanted to come here? Because you knew she’d be here?” The blonde was bad news for his brother, but somehow she kept creeping back. “Just forget about her” She’d clearly forgotten about him. The bottle? Shit, seeing Leah had bothered him. “Okay I know you can finish a bottle of tequila but I certainly can’t” He said, desperate to try and grab his brother’s attention. Talk some sense into him, but it was hopeless. Remzi was now compelling the bartender to give them the bottle for free, turning to Raik with a proud look on his face. “No Remzi. Don’t be doing that bullshit with me. Call her back over and pay for the bottle or I will” Realistic his threats were empty. There was nothing he could do. “Stop being an asshole… I took a fucking glass to the side of the head the other day for you and now I’m starting to wonder why I fucking bothered” There was a heavy thump on the bar as the bartender returned with their drinks. ━ like sisyphus pushing that rock uphill, or echo falling for a daffodil ━ IF HE WAS DEAD now, should Remzi still be feeling so sick? Not the good way, either, like he was about to toss up all that blood and alcohol. Seeing Leah with whoever that was━clearly putting Remzi in the past━and Raik’s annoyance had him spiralling, immediately becoming unsteady in every sense of the word. He ignored Raik’s accusations, peppering like gunshots into his subconscious, bringing out guilt and anger Remzi didn’t want to feel. It was borderline intolerable now, and he wanted every bit of it to stop. “Artık önemli değil.” Remzi muttered, giving the barest response possible before ordering the entire bottle. If he couldn’t have Leah, then at least he had his brother━they could still have fun, couldn’t they? Vampirism hadn’t changed that, right?
‘No, Remzi. Don’t be doing that bullshit with me. Call her back over and pay for the bottle or I will.’
Apparently not. Remzi huffed out a breath and shook his head, shooting a sideways glare at Raik before looking away again. He wouldn’t call her back to pay for it; that was just stupid. … And he didn’t know if he could, anyway. Who knows what else Leah kept from him for her little game.
It was easier to be angry at her than admit that he’d done something wrong. But he had apologized, hadn’t he? And she nearly killed him for it.
She was just crazy. Whatever. That wasn’t his fucking problem.
Raik spoke again, and this time his words earned a longer look from Remzi. The shitty brother, the one who made his family’s life miserable and forced his older brother, who only just got home from the fucking army, to babysit him. Not once had he considered what Raik might’ve gone through before this, before Remzi’s change━and what it was like to know your brother had died━because he was an awful sibling. An awful son, too. “Don’t know why you bothered, either.” Remzi grumbled, pushing away from the bar, abandoning his brother and the bottle that’d just arrived.
He hated feeling like this━guilty━and everybody else just kept pushing it on him.
Remzi wasn’t exactly sure how he ended up there. Well, he could if he tried hard enough to think about it, but he didn’t wanna do that, either. Shoving past Leah and her date, he disappeared further into the crowd and found those witches. Thankfully, they still wanted to party━they just didn’t know they’d lose their lives doing it.
When the door opened, Remzi almost wished it would’ve been anybody but his brother. Anybody else he could either get rid of or compel, but Raik would always revert to that disappointed big-brother stare.
He should’ve locked it. He shouldn’t have been here in the first place, one girl propped up on the sink with her head resting lifelessly against the mirror, and the other sprawled across the tiles, but he couldn’t take it back now. None of it. He was soaked in their blood, pants hanging open at the waistband, crimson caked into his beard and over his bare chest. He felt like a wild animal━looked like one, too━and he wished regret was enough to take this all back; wished it was enough to wipe that look from Raik’s face.
“Raik, they just━” Just what? Opened their necks and begged him to take their lives? What could he say now? Remzi, always quick with the excuses, was finally at a loss.

Their mom had spent years trying to save Remzi from himself, a job that was now passed onto Raik. He refused to accept that maybe his brother was a lost cause. But now Leah had clawed her way back into his life, obviously making an imprint as well. He watched as Remzi glared at the blonde, ready to drown his sorrows in a free bottle of spirit. He couldn’t help but think of the poor girl who was now walking away from them. She could easily lose her job because of Remzi, but obviously, a thought like that hadn’t crossed his brother’s mind. So wrapped in his own shit. Raik was prepared to defend his brother to the bitter end, even when others weren’t willing to. He’d seen the loyal and caring brother he could be, but what if all that was now lost? Now in his place was a reckless and impulsive vampire. Then his brother was gone again, disappearing into the crowd holding the bottle leaving Raik feeling guilty for snapping at him. He bit his lip nervously, sighing as he too moved away from the bar. Of course, he was worth taking a bottle to the head for. It was his brother. The same brother who he played cops and robbers with for hours in the garden as children, or the same brother who pulled him home on a skateboard after he sprained his ankle by jumping from a tree. Was he not doing enough for Remzi? He was completely lost in it all. Lonely and disconnected from the person he used to blow out birthday candles with every year (though Remzi would sometimes lean over and blow out Raik’s too, meaning he got two wishes). If he were blowing out his own right now, he’d be wishing they never went to LA. Wishing it was him and not Remzi having to go through this. His calls to Remzi went unanswered and the texts went unread. “I’m sorry. I didn’t mean what I said. I would take a huge rock to the side of my head for you”— He hit send before sliding the phone back into his pocket. There wasn’t much more he could say. It was difficult to enjoy the rest of the night with a dark cloud hanging over him. Found himself dancing with a petite blonde, dressed up as a devil, but no matter how much he drank he couldn’t bring his spirits up. He should have given his brother a hearty pat on the shoulder, brought him for a hug and told him Leah wasn’t worth his time because she wasn’t. Remzi deserved someone better. He told the devil he would be back shortly, not waiting for a response from her before weaving through the crowd, away from the dancefloor and towards the bathroom. What he saw inside took him back as all oxygen was knocked out of his lungs in an instant. Two dead girls and Remzi covered in blood. The same two girls who approached them at the bar, laughing and joking with them about broomsticks. They were now void of life because of Remzi. He couldn’t even find the words to speak, riddled with shock. His appearance slowly shifted from shock to disgust. This wasn’t his brother. He could barely recognize the person standing in front of him. Raik backed away from Remzi slowly, away from this person. He quickly grabbed the handle, yanking the door open and left his brother behind. REMZI DURMAZ - da end
