━ like sisyphus pushing that rock uphill, or echo falling for a daffodil ━ REMZI SAT IN THE hotel room and… thought. He didn’t have a lot of experience with it, the whole thinking, intellectual thing, but something felt wrong about this. He’d gone to Grey in the hopes of sparing that chick some trouble and messing around with Leah, but that little voice in the back of his mind (which didn’t often speak) was finally piping up. That’s when he knew something was wrong.
Grey wasn’t just another silly conquest for Leah; it wasn’t as if he’d shot her a dirty look in public, and she suddenly wanted revenge. He was her family, and he betrayed her; he made her what she was today. All Remzi knew was that if the situations were flipped, he wouldn’t want Leah anywhere near his family business. That shit was sacred no matter how awful they were to each other; they both should’ve known that. He didn’t like Leah even making a comment about Raik, so why had Remzi gone and stuck his nose in her shit with Grey?
Fuck.
Remzi charged out of the door and, eventually, out of the hotel. The day had been cloudy, the sun stuck behind it, but he still didn’t venture out━didn’t want to risk running into Grey somewhere in their shared home. It was nearly five o’clock as he went, and the sun had almost disappeared completely, leaving it secure for Remzi with enough time to get there before Grey went himself. Remzi didn’t know if he would, but it was a pretty safe bet.
He used his speed to get around corners and go through alleyways, like a blur past the sleepy hollow Mystic Falls was just before rush hour. He found Leah there, hidden from the entrance by only a few feet.
“Leah,” Remzi started before he’d even reached her, voice rough and full of emotions he had hoped to ignore. He didn’t care… but he didn’t want to put Leah through this. “She’s not here. You have to go,” Grabbing her arm, Remzi pushed Leah back into one of the brick walls and stuck his head out of the alley, trying to survey it quickly before his eyes came back to her own. “I’m not fucking around.” He tried not to beg. He tried not to let the love and concern pour out of his mouth, but it came through his eyes anyway, and how he towered over Leah, desperate to keep her out of view.

Fuck. It was a good job she had eternity to waste on these two idiots. Grey had already consumed a large part of her time since returning from the dead, but now Destiny was too. Time meant nothing to her now though. It was just a pointless measurement that Leah was never going to need. Years would tick by, with no real meaning to them as she would remain forever young. It was a blessing. She didn’t have to worry about back pain, getting sick or losing her memory. She did however have an eternity of Remzi. Potentially. Unless the asshole went and got himself staked, which wasn’t unlikely. Even Leah had considered it a few times when he got under her skin, but if he was gone she’d have no one to play games with. Then what? She was just another lonely reaper in the world, like the rest of them. Damn. Why was she always thinking about the vampire as soon as her mind ran blank? Remzi was nothing more than a name bouncing around her head that evening though. She kept her focus on Destiny. Waiting patiently outside the Mystic Falls Daily. Rehearsing the plan over and over in her head. Grab Destiny, teleport out of there to that abandoned warehouse then hold her as ransom until Grey came running for his damsel. If Grey didn’t come running, which was a possibility, she would simply toss Destiny back out into the world again. Maybe even do that little party trick she and Damien tried back in LA. Invading her mind, having her forget the whole thing. Five o’clock. The door swung open and a few employees filtered out but no sign of Grey’s side piece. “Leah,” What? She turned around to see Remzi making his way over to her in a hurry. She sighed softly, “What the fuck are you doing here?” The vampire grabbed her arm, pushing her back into the alleyway. Out of sight as he peered around the corner. Leah quickly pulled away from his grip, “Move. I have shit to be getting on with” She pushed herself up off the wall, ready to shove Remzi aside when he spoke again. Did it sound like a plea? A tone she wasn’t familiar with, at least coming from his mouth. “What?” She paused, her eyes finding his, as he peered down at her, “How do you know she’s not here?... Are you keeping tabs on her as well?” The last question was more of a demand. REMZI DURMAZ

━ like sisyphus pushing that rock uphill, or echo falling for a daffodil ━ ADDICTIVE PERSONALITY. IT WAS nature as well as nurture, the doctor told him, and Remzi could just imagine the blubbering his mom would’ve done if she was there. Cupping her mouth, crying, whimpering, “Oğlum, oğlum. Sana ne yaptım? Nerede hata yaptım?” Praying for God to forgive Remzi, help him, wipe the slate clean. To the doctor, it hadn’t been about religion━not to Remzi either, days spent in the mosque pretending to give a shit, learning how to use it to his advantage. It was about cognitive behavioural therapy, watching for signs, and being honest with himself as well as his family.
Remzi hadn’t done any of that. The same substances were no longer effective in his new state, and perhaps if he followed that last suggestion, he would’ve realized he was just as interested in human blood. Remzi wouldn’t call it an addiction, but he hadn’t before, either. Everybody else had and he thought they were stupid for it.
Leah was another part of this. Equivalent to his dealer in this life, maybe, but Remzi had never slept with any of the others. She allowed him to be who he thought he was always destined to be, and while they argued and butt heads, Leah never judged him for it. He enjoyed the chaos she brought to his life, revelled in it, never felt like he had to be anyone else with her. He lied to Raik and his parents, promised he was trying, that he hadn’t really killed those people, while Leah was the only one who knew the truth. He trusted her to some degree, as she did with him, and he betrayed her in the worst way━just like when his supposed “friends” left him on that dirty floor while he foamed at the mouth and flirted with Death.
He wished he didn’t care. Remzi wanted nothing more than to leave that alleyway and abandon her, let her fall into Grey’s hands, but he stayed. A poor attempt at righting his wrongs.
Like that’d ever worked for him before.
“Saving you. Go.” He knew very well he couldn’t move her if she didn’t want to go, but Remzi tried to tug her in the opposite direction anyway, letting out a rough puff of breath. And, just as expected, Leah didn’t listen. She told him to move before doing it herself, shifting from the wall and almost forcing Remzi to move, though he didn’t shift an inch. Merely closing back in, trying to corner her with his size alone, Remzi huffed again, one arm stretching up to lay his palm on the brick beside her, effectively fencing Leah in.
‘How do you know she’s not here?... Are you keeping tabs on her as well?’
He didn’t know why he thought she might’ve just listened to him without asking questions; it was Leah for God’s sake; she didn’t listen to anyone, especially not without a reason. “No.” Remzi muttered, shaking his head before lifting it to stare sideways out of the alley again. “Grey knows. He’s probably on his way here, Leah, go.” Frowning down at her now, he continued hurriedly, “Do your little disappearing act and get out of here.” The please on the end of his sentence was silent, but it was there━in his voice and his eyes, the sad expression he gave her. He wanted to protect her, but, most of all, he was sorry.
* My son, my son. What have I done to you? Where did I go wrong?

Remzi would soon be uttering his final words if he didn’t move out of her way. Leah had the whole thing planned down to the very last second and now the vampire was standing in her way. Ruining her plan. The anger bubbled in the pit of her stomach, as she was ready to snap his stupid neck. Of course, she wasn’t about to plunge her hand deep into his chest and rip out that pointlessly beating heart. Her non-biological dad suggested she take her second of life and embrace the world for the beauty it offered, but with no surprise, she scoffed at the idea. Turning her nose up at the suggestion that she should basically let Grey off for killing her. Remzi wasn’t part of this big plan of hers though but still, he’d managed to worm his way in. Placing himself right in the middle of her life, all the way from LA to Mystic Falls. Once Grey was dead perhaps then she’d pay more attention to the vampire. They could ditch the dead weight of his boring brother and do something fun together. “Saving you. Go.” Her face twisted into an impression of confusion, “And why would you need to save me?” He wasn’t moving either, trying to use his size to box her in. She would give him another few seconds to explain himself before playing her disappearing act to find Destiny, even if it meant teleporting straight into her place of work or even apartment. She wasn’t about to let this whole thing fall apart because Remzi wanted to keep her safe. The very thought of it made her stomach turn— someone showing an ounce of care towards her. Grey knows? How the fuck did he know? The only person who knew was… “Remzi” She lurched forward off the wall, grabbing Remzi around the neck with her right hand before teleporting them both out of them to one of the many dark alleyways in Mystic Falls. Soon as her feet hit the floor the grip around the vampire’s throat tighten as she used all her strength to slam Remzi against the wall behind him. “How does Grey know? Because the only person I told about this was you… so either you told someone else or you told Grey” Her nails dug deeper into his skin, cutting through the surface as she kept her eyes locked on Remzi. Has she been foolish enough to actually trust this piece of shit? The anger had been replaced with fury and she was blinded by it. “I guess there’s only one way to find out” There was a sly smile on her face, something sinister ticking away behind her eyes. Leah quickly removed her hand from Remzi but instantly moved it around to the back of his neck. She ran her fingers through his hair, before gripping hard around those tangled locks. She closed the gap between the pair, forcing Remzi’s head closer to hers. Softly she pressed her lips against his before delving into his mind. It wasn’t as easy as the guy in the bar. The memories were snapshots and nothing was making sense. Fragments of things here and there, but she couldn’t see Grey. Just nameless faces. Then through the faces, she could hear Grey’s albeit distorted. The conversation wasn’t clear, but she heard her name. Leah released her hand from Remzi's head, stepping back as she did so. Had he really betrayed her like this? Hot tears were on the brink of forming in her eyes, but no. She had never shed a tear over anyone and wasn’t about to start. REMZI DURMAZ

━ like sisyphus pushing that rock uphill, or echo falling for a daffodil ━ IF HE HAD ANY ability to throw up still, Remzi thought he just might. He hated feeling like he owed anybody, that he was indebted to Leah or otherwise━like he gave a shit about her. He didn’t want to. This was just for fun, but something else drove him to come to her after spilling her secrets. He should’ve left her to deal with her family drama on his own, but guilt overwhelmed him, and now he was here. Feeling like this.
She disappeared like he wanted, teleporting them elsewhere━except she took Remzi with her. Already uncomfortable, squirming to get away, he got caught like a fly in her trap. He always forgot how strong she was. Remzi thought he was top dog all of the time, even more so now that he was a vampire, but to have his windpipe constricted in Leah’s tiny grasp felt… emasculating, and that was the least of it. She could barely fit her whole hand around his throat, and yet she easily pinned him in place, throwing questions at Remzi like darts as if he would (or even could) answer.
He didn’t. Remzi’s eyes were sad, and if he could look into a mirror right at that moment, he would’ve straightened up, puffed his chest and directed his vision elsewhere. But he couldn’t, and so that guilty stare was directed straight at Leah, hands wrapped around her wrist to squeeze back. He didn’t want to hurt her any more than he already had.
She surprised him with a kiss. It felt uncomfortable, unwelcome, but he kissed her anyway, one hand moving into her hair. For just a second, he thought she’d use it as an excuse for another rocky night, that she wasn’t as upset as he thought she would be, and that he hadn’t crossed a line with their game. His head hurt, seeing everything she did, little flashes of his memory pulled up like an old projector carousel, each image brought forward, examined, and then moved along until she found what she was looking for.
Her brother. Remzi’s betrayal.
His heart lurched when she separated from him as if Leah had taken his breath. He searched her eyes, he saw them become glassy, and Remzi thought it was the first time he’d ever desperately reached for a woman that wasn’t his mother. Shifting forward, his hands snatched her elbows, trying to draw Leah back into him. “I’m━” He didn’t want to apologize. If he did, then he owed her something, and he just couldn’t. “I thought I was just messing with you. I went to him, and I realized I needed━I came to you before he could. Isn’t that enough?” Remzi hadn’t felt his throat go painfully dry since he was turned. Bloodlust was different; it was a hunger that constricted his throat, made him feel desperate, but it wasn’t the agony that came with tears unable to be shed.
It wasn’t enough. He knew that, but he couldn’t let go of who he was. She wanted him because of it━because he wasn’t good. Leah never tried to change him.
Until now. Maybe it was time to learn that nobody would handle his bullshit forever, even if he thought they had the same interests.

She had become too close to Remzi. She should have kicked him out of her bed after a few nights, but here they were, months later still at each other’s throats. Turning her back on the vampire was proving more and more difficult every day. Sure, she missed him when she left LA but it was only a fraction. Now he was back in her life, making her realize what she should have been missing. Leah wanted to sink her claws so deep into Remzi and never let him go. They were just two troubled souls, existing in the world. They found solace in each other. It wasn’t perfect, but it was enough to keep Leah wanting more. There was no hiding her plans from him the evening of the Blacklight party. It flooded out of her without a second thought. She should have noticed then that she was beginning to trust the vampire, if not care for him. He’d somehow managed to thaw the ice cold heart of hers, but it was about to immediately freeze back over again once those flashing images ran through her head. There was a pang of jealousy with each memory of a female, but that wasn’t what she wanted to tear him apart about. He broke her trust. He’d gone too far. A game they’d been playing since they met had finally come to end. Remzi was the winner, completely fucking over Leah. It was over— whatever this was. She swallowed hard as Remzi reached forward, taking hold of her elbows. There was emotion rising inside, a bubble in her throat as she wanted to scream at him. Maybe this is what she deserved after pushing him time and time again. Her mom would always mutter that Leah was unworthy of love, as she cracked open her second bottle of wine. Maybe she was right. For years she'd been professing the Maddox’s family were so broken, but she was just as broken. There was desperation in Remzi’s voice, which should have had Leah mocking him, but she was too sad to even try. Her eyes were still locked on his, still fighting to keep the tears at bay as he tried to explain his actions. As if there was a justified reason. She reached forward, placing her hand lightly on his chest. That pointless heart beating beneath. There was a time she thought maybe, just maybe, it was beating for her. Obviously not. Leah stroked his T-shirt lightly, gazing back at those eyes that had drawn her in from the moment they met. In an instant she rammed her hand deep into the vampire's chest, delicate fingers wrapping around his heart. This felt grosser than she imagined. At that moment she could have yanked his heart clean out of his chest. Watch as he slowly faded away in front of her but she couldn’t bring herself to do it, even when faced with the betrayal. Fingers slowly unwrapped from around his heart, as she pulled her hand back out, “I never want to see you again” Her voice was filled with hatred as she spat the words out. REMZI DURMAZ

━ like sisyphus pushing that rock uphill, or echo falling for a daffodil ━ REMZI HADN’T FOUGHT FOR breath since being turned. It was always shallow now, the slow pump of his heart making him appear normal as long as he had a steady diet of human blood. It wasn’t steady at all, really, but a plethora of it in bursts seemed to be keeping him satisfied.
Satisfied. What a stupid word. He wasn’t satisfied with this, with Leah, with his actions. In a typical Remzi move, he’d been more than stupid, and now it was finally biting him in the ass. Something had to be said about the fact that it was against Leah instead of for her now, and she suddenly had a problem with it. He wouldn’t think that yet, though. For now, Remzi was just… remorseful. And it was an awful fucking feeling.
He struggled for breath in another way when her hand dove into his chest and wrapped around his heart. Remzi could feel Leah in a way he never had before, intimately, but in every way he hated. He feared for his life for the first time in a while, and he’d forgotten that feeling. His hands jumped mere inches from where they wrapped around her elbows, squeezing Leah’s biceps instead, blue eyes blown wide as he searched her own for some sort of regret.
All he found was pain and betrayal, and Remzi had to live with the fact that he’d caused that. He’d forced her eyes, ones he only liked to see filled with pleasure, satisfaction and joy, to turn hard with resentment. She, the only person who’d never turn her back on Remzi or judge him for his awful actions, didn’t want him anymore. Truthfully, he couldn’t blame anybody but himself, but he’d surely try.
Silently, he begged for mercy. He didn’t want to die, not for some stupid mistake and not at Leah’s hand. His eyes welled with tears, feeling helpless and desperate, wishing she wouldn’t do this. He’d soured everything they had, but she’d sully every memory spent together. And if she’d ever truly cared, could she really do this?
‘I never want to see you again.’
Perhaps that was a declaration more than anything━in the same way that Remzi’s coming here was. Even with her hand drawn from his chest, he still couldn’t breathe, and he knew she didn’t want to hear him speak. “I’m sorry.” He croaked anyway, finally, fighting to see one more glimpse of humanity or something else left in her.
Remzi vanished from that spot in a matter of moments, disappearing in a blur, scared not of what she might do to him, but of what she’d already done. What she’d caused.
