Instinctively he ran his left thumb over his right middle finger. Empty. Blue eyes fell down on the bare middle finger where his daylight once lay. Now it was gone and he was a prisoner to the night. It was unnerving to look at so he quickly forced his hands deep into his pockets in a feeble attempt to forget about it. To him, it wasn’t just a daylight ring. It was the ring his parents gave him. Whilst he hated them for everything they did to him, he still had happy memories with them until he was 19. That is what he missed. Thankfully by the time he finished work that evening the sun was still down and Lawrence was able to make it home without burning alive. It was the following morning when he pulled his blinds open and his skin started to sizzle with a pain he hadn’t felt since his mom ripped open the curtains in his childhood bedroom to reveal the truth about her son. Same as before he darted to the darkest corner of his room. After turning his apartment upside down for an hour he realised it wasn’t there. Teddy’s suggestion to retrace his steps was hopeless too, given he was trapped inside until the sunset and Hector wasn’t impressed with Lawrence’s message to say he wasn’t able to go into work until later. “Who the fuck loses their daylight ring?” Hector was right. How had managed to lose something that had been on his ring for over 80 years? Only then did it dawn him. Penny. The pretty blonde from the bar. How had he been so naive? He’d been so caught up with her that he didn’t realise what her game was. Teddy suggested getting another ring, but he didn’t want another one. Lawrence wanted his own back. It was the only thing he’d kept from home. He managed to pick himself for the evening though and drag himself to the bar. The only thing keeping him going was the fact he managed to get the night off so he was free to drown his sorrows surrounded by humans dressed up as the supernatural. It was the one time of year you would struggle to tell the difference between the two, as the mortals smear fake blood across their faces. As cliche as it was, Lawrence opted to go as a vampire, requiring minimal effort. Both upstairs and downstairs were packed. As always he found himself drifting towards the stairs down into Emerald City. He weaved between the bodies and finally arrived at the bar, itching for a drink. With a whiskey in hand, he turned back around to face the crowd of people, scanning the room but soon stopped when he noticed someone at the other end of the room. He frowned, his eyes narrowing slightly as he did a double take. It was her. The thief. His hand clenched tighter around his glass as he forced himself through the people. As soon as he got close enough he reached to grab Penny by the arm, “Where the fuck is my ring?” He was prepared to stay there until he got his ring back. Returned to where it belonged. ━ for a dreamer, night's the only time of day ━ SHE ALMOST HADN’T COME that night. Not because of the vampire, she wasn’t worried about him, but just the idea of trying to have fun irritated Penny to her core. She made it into a night to gather more trinkets for her collection instead, though she’d underestimated the brains of the residents in Mystic Falls. It wasn’t difficult for Penny to spot the difference between real gold and fake; it was just that nobody was wearing any tonight. Costume jewellery, all of it━most was plastic, too. Ugh. The thought of this being a completely fruitless journey had Penny feeling sick to her stomach.
Dressed as a raccoon, she fit right in with the rest of the costumed fools, most women clad in provocative animal costumes. Penny thought she brought her own humour to it, though; she didn’t choose a cute, sweet animal, but rather a pesky little thief. She was quite proud of it, though she’d never tell anyone who commented. Most received a scowl if they held nothing of value on their person.
It took three drinks for her to give up on the bar and head into the crowd of people. All there, squished together, gyrating and sweating like a bunch of idiots… it would be so easy to lose one’s valuables in a situation like that. Why hadn’t she started here?
Penny put on a brave face as she danced, even smiling, bouncing around with the mortals who had their faces painted as if they were one of her kind. Pathetic. She did a double-take at a flash of scales, glittering under the club’s bright lights. Penny followed the girl until she passed another━pale, dark hair━Alice? Shit, was it really her? Penny pushed through the crowd, desperate to find her, eyes trained only on the dark-haired woman. “Alice!” She called over the music, tears springing to her eyes, tearing through the bodies until…
It wasn’t her.
And why would it be? What reason would Alice have to be in some shitty club in some shitty, tiny town? The girl turned towards Penny, furrowing her brow and smiling before turning away, leaving the dragon to stand straight in the middle of the crowd, shuddering at the ghost she’d seen. And if it had been Alice, then what? Why would she even want to speak to Penny after this many years?
‘Where the fuck is my ring?’
She flinched, gaze snapping to the vampire, a glare shot straight through him. She could almost kill him if it wasn’t so frowned upon. “Don’t fucking touch me.” Penny hissed, viciously tearing her arm from Lawrence and shoving at his chest, letting him see just a fraction of the power she possessed. She’d smite him where he stood, mortal laws be damned. “I don’t know where your ring is, nor do I care.” Her anger boiled like a fire below, and Penny turned to face Lawrence head-on, beginning to trudge towards him. “How stupid can you be? If you really think I pulled your old-ass ring from your finger without you noticing for days, would it be smart to question me about it? Would you think that was the extent of my abilities?” She was so angry she could cry, all the emotions surged up from her chest and half of Penny’s face turned to scales, white and glimmering, not cheap like that stupid bitch’s makeup. She stopped then, halted her steps and breathed until they disappeared, eyes trained on the floor.

And Hannya questioned why all vampires were so paranoid. This was a prime example. Lawrence got wrapped up in Penny’s beauty in a few hours before she slipped the ring off his hand with ease. For what though? It was nothing special to the naked eye. To the mortal eye. Just a clunky piece of jewellery that wasn’t that fancy. His parents didn’t exactly lay out a selection of rings for him to choose from. He got whatever they gave him before he was ushered out the door with his backpack. It kept him alive for all these years. Glued to his finger through everything, but now it was gone and he knew it exactly where it was. In the pocket of some pretty blonde, he’d met at the bar. Just like what happened with Hannya, he found himself falling into yet another trap. Gone was that sweet girl he met at the bar. Replaced with some fiery girl who rammed her hand hard into her chest. Lawrence stumbled back a few steps, colliding with a body behind him, not expecting such strength to come from someone so petite and cute-looking. The person behind him muttered something, but Lawrence ignored them. He went to step back forward. Back towards Penny, but she was already storming towards him. “I don’t know where your ring is, nor do I care.”Then the scales appeared on the side of her face. They were white and beautiful under the dim lights, but what the fuck? Scales? There was a fit of anger burning behind the surface with Penny too, just like the anger that was bubbling inside Lawrence. Furious she was denying it and also mocking him in the same sentence. “It didn’t take me days to notice. I noticed the following morning when I tried to open the curtains in my goddamn apartment and nearly went up in flames. The morning after I saw you in this bar and you were doing whatever the fuck you were doing with my fingers” He stepped forward, closing the gap between the pair. “Is this what you do? Flirt with males and take their jewellery? Pretend your interested before running off with their goods?” The anger was also stemming from the fact she’d managed to fool him so easily. “I know you stole it. There is CCTV everywhere in this bar. You can clearly see you sliding my ring off my finger with your tongue” Thieving aside he did find the whole act somewhat alluring. Thankfully almost every corner of the bar there was a camera. Hector's second set eyes to keep an eye on customers and employees alike. Lawrence sprinted to the bar as soon as the sunset to watch the CCTV back. To watch his ring get stolen in HD whilst he was too busy getting wrapped up in Penny. He was quick to flick the screen off when Hector walked into the office though, not wanting to admit to his boss what had happened. How stupid he’d been. PENNY BARTLETT

━ for a dreamer, night's the only time of day ━ PENNY TRIED NOT TO show amusement on her face when Lawrence rattled on about his discovery, wishing she could see the dumb look he would’ve been wearing once he realized it was gone━and sizzling in front of his window? Hilarious. So funny she could almost forget about the ghost she’d just seen.
Almost.
Unfortunately for him, she was still in no mood to toddle around about his ring. It belonged to her now, and she had absolutely no intention of handing it back. It had its own place in her hoard, and she liked it just where it was. He could get a new one if it bothered him that much.
‘Is this what you do? Flirt with males and take their jewellery? Pretend you’re interested before running off with their goods?’
Penny’s eyes came up then, flashing Lawrence a feral smile━all teeth and ready to close around him at any moment in the way a bear trap would. Perhaps she’d take his hand clean off next time instead, see how he whined then. He didn’t know the half of what she’d stolen from men and women alike, how she drew them in with smiling jaws, some much more difficult than he had been. Lawrence was easy, she barely had to try, and she would’ve told him that if she wasn’t so stubborn. Innocent, nobody knew except them, she wouldn’t stir up trouble here━she had to make sure Mystic Falls stayed a safe place for her and Cassandra no matter what.
“I didn’t take anything from you. Stop accusing me of something I’d never do.”
A recording of it? Chances were he was bluffing. If not, perhaps she could destroy the tape. Either way, Penny was willing to stay confident throughout this and see where it panned out. Maybe he’d back down as soon as she asked to see it. “Oh yeah? I don’t believe you.” Defiantly, she crossed her arms over her chest and tipped her chin up to him, glaring at the vampire despite the height difference, staring at him as if she were ten men. “I remember having your fingers in my mouth,” Penny’s smirk was sly and grew slowly, as if reminiscing━he wasn’t all bad, really. “But I never took your ring. C’mon, let’s go. Show me this ‘recording.’” Using a dramatic tone to vocalize her disbelief, Penny pushed on Lawrence’s chest again, though this time she was much gentler, as if leading him away.

Too many had Lawrence stormed into an altercation headfirst and that was exactly what he was doing with Penny. An expression on her face that warned him she was ready to lash out at him at any second. There was no way he was backing down from this though, even if it did mean he’d have his ass beat by some petite female. Perhaps his heart was yearning for more than fleeting one night stands, which is why he allowed himself to be deceived by a beautiful blonde with striking eyes. What the fuck did she want with his ring anyway? It was rendered useless to anyone else who tried to use it and it wasn’t exactly something that held value. At least, he didn’t think he did. It looked like every other daylight ring out there. She had the audacity to pretend it wasn’t her either. God, he wanted to grab her by the throat and launch her across the bar. Even more so when she told him she didn’t believe him about the recording. This woman was pushing every single button possible. His jaw clenched, his feet almost glued to the floor, his posture rigid. He was allowing his temper to get the better of him as she flashed him a sly smile. The dark veins tickled beneath his eyes, his eyes grew darker as he glared back at Penny. It wasn’t some show to try and scare her, as she did to him with her fancy scales. Lawrence took a deep breath, his face returning to normal as she asked to see the recording. His body relaxed a little as she moved forward, pushing him back again. He didn’t travel quite as far this time. “Fine” He responded through gritted teeth. He turned around, weaving through the bodies until he reached the exit. He swung the door open, glancing behind him for a second to check Penny was following but didn’t bother to hold the door open for her. The corridor was much quieter than inside, and cooler, which Lawrence was grateful for. He slipped his jacket off as he walked off in the direction of the office. He could hear Penny’s footsteps follow him, a few steps behind. Once he reached the door he tapped heavily on the keypad, before pushing the door open. This time, he held it open for Penny but only to prevent it from locking. Once they were both inside he pulled the chair up in front of the computer. Silence lingered in the air as Lawrence tapped away on the computer. A click of a mouse here and there. “Are you a snake or something? Y’know with those scales back there”He asked, his tone flat as he kept his eyes on the monitor. Finally, he found the recording of the night. A smirk on his face as he double clicked to open the file. “Skip all this shit” He muttered as he buffered forward through most of the evening. Mainly just Lincoln mulling around, Lawrence behind the bar, and Hannya strutting about the place. A low groan as he skipped through quicken images of him and Hannya on the screen. The demon sat on the bar, her legs wrapped around Lawrence. There was no sound, but flirting was evident in the moving pictures. Eventually, Lawrence hit pause the moment he saw Penny’s face appear on the screen. “It’s a good job the owner didn’t install some grainy CCTV” He carefully skipped through their interactions until he hit pause again, “Now what’s really good about this software you can actually slow the recordings down” He clicked a few times before hitting play. Lawrence shuffled forward in the seat, placing his finger lightly on the screen. “There you have it. You sliding my ring off my finger” He hit pause once again, turning the chair to face Penny. “Would you like me to replay it? Maybe even have it copied onto a disc so you can take it home and watch it in your own time” Lawrence folded his arms, settling back into the chair, extending both of his legs. PENNY BARTLETT

━ for a dreamer, night's the only time of day ━ SURELY HE’D MAKE UP some excuse about losing the tape by the time they got to the office. He didn’t hold the first door for her, and Penny’s hands came up at the last minute, palms smacked to the swinging threshold with a grunt. So this was what Lawrence was like when you’d fallen from grace with him? She snorted, following the vampire without saying much, only thinking about how idiotic he was━how childish. It was just some stupid ring; he could have a witch conjure up another for him.
Reaching the office door, Penny smirked as he held it open, purposely taking a few long, slow steps to get there. “See you learned your manners about holding doors open for women.” She scoffed, flitting into the little office behind the vampire, so sure of herself even if she was about to get caught in the act.
‘Are you a snake or something? Y’know with those scales back there.’
Penny cackled, leaning back against the desk. She shifted up and onto the edge, watching Lawrence from behind her black mask. He was still pretty up close, those ropey arms bent to allow him to hover over the keyboard, back muscles on display even from beneath his clothing. She admired him for a moment, and then smirked, “A snake? Is that the best you can come up with?” Penny returned his question with one of her own, deciding she would keep it a secret for a while longer. It wasn’t worth anything━if he didn’t know what she was, then he didn’t know much about dragons━it was simply about keeping him in the dark.
Watching the images zip past double-time on the screen, Penny raised her brows at the scene of him and some other lady at the bar, snickering soon after. If he really did have something on her, then at least she’d get some entertainment out of whatever else was on this tape. “Guess I wasn’t so special after all, huh?” She teased, though he wasn’t either. Penny wasn’t nearly as offended by it as her joke might’ve suggested.
She stilled when the pair of them appeared. Watching closely, only taking her eyes off it once to roll them as Lawrence bragged about slowing down the recordings, Penny saw her own actions from the view of a fly on the wall. Bending to assess the screen, wondering why her hair looked like that from the side, she was presented with a clear view of her thievery. Though it was subtle and quick, a good enough job that the one wearing it hadn’t noticed, she couldn’t deny the crystal-clear recounting of events.
The vampire started gloating, though, and Penny hated that more than anything. She couldn’t stand his reaction, completely ignoring the entire reason they were in this in the first place━her faults in the matter. “I don’t know what you’re talking about,” Penny muttered, excited to see his reaction in return; she wanted to watch Lawrence completely lose his shit. “I don’t see anything.” Straightening up and angling back to face Lawrence from where she was perched on the desk, Penny kept that shit-eating grin plastered to her painted lips. “Copy it on a disc if you want, I’m sure you’d like to take it home and relive it over and over.” Lifting a leg, Penny rested the ball of her foot on Lawrence’s thigh, digging in her heel just enough for him to feel it. Using that bit of hold on him, she shifted his chair by a fraction, eager for him to know she could still manipulate him to wherever she wanted. She had to get out of this somehow, and denial still seemed like her best bet.
“I don’t see whatever it is you want me to see, kid. Like I said, maybe your time is better spent elsewhere instead of chasing dead ends.”

The cockiness that oozed from Penny stirred a different kind of anger in him. The sort where you know you’re right about something but the other person isn't accepting it. Adamant they were right even when the facts were staring them in the face. The CCTV would bring her down soon enough. Crashing from her high horse and Lawrence was looking forward to seeing her face when she realized she’d been rumbled. Admittedly, it was rude to let the door swing back on Penny. Amongst other things, his mom did teach him manners, but they weren’t about to extend to the woman who had his ring. He watched carefully as she slowly approached the door. Could he snap her neck? Would that even kill her? Then he’d never get his ring back, but at least he’d won whatever game she was looking to play. Eyes shot up at her as she cackled. Her laugh caused even more rage to rise inside, as though she was laughing at him. A moment of silence as she was appearing to gaze at him from under her mask. Hiding behind it. He shrugged, thinking a snake was a pretty good guess. Apparently not, “Well I’m assuming you’re some kind of reptile… cold-blooded and all that” Gone was the sweet and alluring Penny he met the first night. She had been replaced with some stone-cold scaly thief. He kept his eyes locked on hers for another second, trying to figure her out. “Whatever” He mumbled quietly, turning back to the screen. He tried to fast forward through the images of him and Hannya as quickly as possible, but it was at maximum speed. Rapid images of him and the demon who offered an open vein whenever Lawrence asked. Penny noticed too and felt the need to comment. He threw her a quick glance. Now it was his turn to be cocky. Rile Penny up just how she’d done to him. He watched Penny as she watched the video, tearing his eyes away quickly as he realized he was admiring her. There was no time for flirting when his life was at stake. “I—” He straightened himself up in the chair, a deep frown on his face. Was she messing with him? “Are you blind as well as a thief?” His jaw clenched as she dug her heel into his thigh. She was strong and part of him was still trying to figure out what the fuck she was. This didn’t go as he planned in his head. He was expecting to drag her in here, for her to admit she’d stolen the ring and return it to him. No, she was denying the whole thing despite the evidence. The glaring clear evidence couldn’t be disputed. He grabbed hold of her foot before throwing it off his thigh with force. Lawrence quickly stood up out of the chair, those veins threatening to make an appearance again. He saw two options. Threaten her or try and guilt-trip her into giving it back. Spin-off the story about how his parents gave him the ring, minus the whole before they kicked him out of the coven. “I was going to say that my parents gave that ring to me as a gift and it’s the only thing I have left of theirs, but you probably don’t care due to your lack of empathy, eh” He inched forward, closing the gap between the pair as he placed his hands either side of Penny on the desk, his eyes locked on hers, “I was going to break your neck, but something tells me that won’t keep you down. Would you survive if I ripped your heart out?” A rhetorical question to himself, a low hum in his throat before he sighed, “Keep the damn ring if you want it that badly” As much as he wanted his ring back, he also didn’t want to spend another second in the office with Penny. ━ for a dreamer, night's the only time of day ━ FLABBERGASTED BY HER RESPONSE, which was exactly what she wanted, Lawrence looked at her as if she had two heads. Penny loved pulling that reaction out of him, especially when he snatched her ankle and stood up, all that anger oozing out of him. She raised her brows and smirked, faux surprise on her features, mocking him silently. Penny didn’t move, though her fingers curled around the edge of the desk, muscles in her arms rigid. She was ready for a fight if need be, that dangerous heat beginning to pool in her sternum. Penny would turn him into a shish kebab if he so much as touched her.
“Right.” She agreed simply to his comment about her lack of empathy, head bobbing in a curt nod. Penny had plenty of empathy; it just wasn’t so easily doled out. “You’re… old enough, right? At least over a hundred? And you still care about them?” Penny scoffed, though she remembered her mother and father fondly. The images of them began to fade, though, slowly but surely. She had her sister now, and that mattered most.
Spreading her knees to allow him to close in on her, Penny shifted her hands away from the desk’s edge, watching intently━curiously. “Perhaps.” She mused, leaning in to drag the tip of her nose from the base of his neck to the hinge of his jaw, breathing him in. “But would you?” The dragon whispered, asking him instead, fingers trailing up one of his arms, the others pressing into the centre of his chest. The pads of her digits dug into the left side of his chest, though she didn’t break the skin.
“I will.” Penny continued, her voice a gentle ghost against his warm skin, swiping her tongue up towards his ear lobe. “I don’t need your permission. It’s my ring now,” She hissed into his ear, leaning back just barely to catch his eye, grinning arrogantly. Daring him.

Penny was successfully clawing her way underneath his skin. He’d never been a particularly angry human, rather quiet docile and passive but it spilled out of him after he was turned. Furious with the world around him and everyone in it. “I didn’t say I still care about them” He snapped defensively. There had been moments he missed his mom. It was clear she was being controlled by her husband, listening to everything that came out of his mouth, even when he insisted on kicking Lawrence out of the coven. But he did care that the ring was a gift from them and he wasn’t about to explain that to Penny. To have her laugh at him, mock him about being sentimental about a ring. His jaw remained clenched as the tip of her nose glided up his neck, stopping just below his ear as she whispered into it. Her hand resting over the left-hand side of his chest, directly above his heart. He could feel the heat from her hand seeping through the shirt. Only skin and bones stood in between her palm and his heart. Lawrence was waiting for a twitch in her fingers, any indication she was going to make a move so he could snap her neck but she was still. “I think we both know the answer to that” One of the few fatal blows to a vampire, but luckily no one had ever come close to ripping his heart out. He’d never had to endure the feeling of someone else holding his life in the palm of their hand. Hairs rose on the back of his neck as her tongue skimmed his neck. He glared at her as she leaned back. The door was right there behind him, there for him to make an exit but instead, he reached forward pulling Penny’s mask off before throwing it down on the side. Looking back at the beautiful blonde he was captivated by the first time they met, but now her face bought him nothing but rage. He grabbed her by the wrist, pushing her hand away from his chest, “You’re such a bitch” He spoke in a low voice, removing both his hands from the table and placing them on Penny’s hip, pulling her close to him, fingers digging into her skin as he did so. “I’m prepared to make your life a misery until I get my ring back” He moved forward, his lips brushing against hers before his tongue travelling along her lower lip lightly, “... and I have an eternity to do that” He closed the gap between the pair, pressing his lips hard into hers as his hands glided along her lower back.
