Tobi wasn’t the most ambitious person, but he has plans to go college. Whether it was for the ‘experience’ or education was up for debate. Regardless, it had been stolen away from him by Kai. His whole life set back 20 years as the world continued to turn as he lay in a wooden box in the ground. But he was past wallowing in self-pity. It was draining. Instead, he settled for a below average paid job but at the end of each week, he was opening his wallet to find a few quarters left. He needed a side job. Something to bring him some extra dollar. His talents were limited though. He wasn’t into any of that crafting shit or anything artistic so he fell back on the only thing he knew he was good at. Magic. He was tempted to brew up some bullshit love potions to sell to humans but then it dawned on him. Daylight rings. The town was crawling with vampires some of whom didn’t have a silver band around their ring to stop them from burning in the sun. It was business just waiting to be explored. The more desperate vampires would pay a fair amount to walk in the day. With that, he launched into his new idea to find out how to actually make these rings. The Parker household was full to the brim with books and it wasn’t long until he dug out what he needed, but disappointed to find out it wasn't as straightforward as mumbling a few words whilst holding a ring. He needed a lapis lazuli whatever the hell that was. From the pictures, he figured out it was a stone. He could have asked Jo and his dad for more information but didn’t want to risk them catching onto his plans. Armed with scraps of information pulled from various books he headed into Mystic Falls, straight for the pawnshop. That place always seemed to have bits of weird pieces in the window, but inside there was an array of rings on display in a cabinet in front of the til. Nothing looked similar to the ones he saw in the books though. “Can I help you?” An employee appeared in front of him, behind the till. Tobi's gaze drifted up to the man, as he pondered for a moment, “I’m looking for a ring with a lapis lazuli” The employee’s features contorted into confusion as Tobi sighed, “Lapis lazuli? They’re like big ugly stones” The employee shook his head at Tobi’s explanation, “Sorry kid. I don’t know what you’re on about” Kid? The warlock scoffed. Just another reminder he was lingering in his 17-year-old body ANDY LATIMER

━ i shut my eyes and all the world drops dead. ━ MONEY COULD CERTAINLY BUY HAPPINESS, Andy maintained. As a person who had lived without, and with money, she knew the difference. Fuck anybody who ever said otherwise. Having grown up in hand-me-down clothes and an unheated house on stilts, Andy knew how it felt to live without. Her father had always valued magical advancement over basic amenities. In contrast, she'd also experienced the comfort that money could give. Her apartment in New York, the respect that came with an outfit that cost more than a few dollars. She'd grown accustomed to finery, making the loss of it extremely difficult. After William had blacklisted her, Andy had gone to extreme lengths to fill her belly.
The pawn shop in Mystic Falls was a 'blink and you'll miss it' hole-in-the-wall. Andy hadn't expected much on the two times she'd visited before, but even she was surprised by how sparse it was. Clearly, the people of Mystic Falls didn't need much extra cash. Andy couldn't agree, the pocket of her jeans weighed down by the Rolex she'd stolen. Usually, she didn't care for petty theft, but it had been too easy. The bar two towns over just swollen with business men with a fetish for heavy metals and ostentatious displays of wealth. Andy was desperate enough to stoop low - anything for a hot shower and a better sleep than her Pinto could provide. The alert above the door buzzed when Andy pushed it open making her flinch, head still fragile from the night before. Shockingly, there was another customer inside, making Andy pause momentarily before she made herself look busy by the back.
Picking up the brass handle of an old, polished tea pot Andy pretended she wasn't listening to the exchange behind her. Inside the pot, the teapot was stained with old tea streaks and what looked like rust, Andy cringed with disgust and placed it back where she found it. Over her shoulder, she heard the drawn out syllables of 'lapis lazuli', strung along as if the speaker was enunciating to somebody stupid. Andy refrained from snorting, chin tucked close to her shoulder as she watched the dim look on the tiller's face. She supposed, from their limited interactions, that he was a little vacant. Unlike him, Andy knew what a lapis lazuli was. She'd dealt with many a witch and vampire looking for the stone. What piqued her interest was, why was a shaggy haired and lanky teenager interested in a semi-precious - but otherwise obscure - stone?
Turning on her heels, Andy forgot about the watch in her pocket and crossed the shop in three steps. Too close for strange comfort, Andy stretched on her tip toes to peer over the kids shoulder, just shy of touching him. Head tilted to stare at his profile up close. "You ain't gon' find no lapis in a place like this." She drawled, her accent ripening with promise. She pulled away a moment later, dancing back a step with her hands clutched innocently behind her back. "It's your lucky day, though." She added, her grin creeping cleanly across her face. Nothing cheered Andy up quite like a potential sale. "I can get you some lapis..." Head tilting, Andy's hair hung over one shoulder and tickled the exposed skin at her waist. "Sorry to poach your custom, man." Andy did not look very sorry at all.

The Parker family weren’t necessarily strapped for cash, but Tobi was growing tired of being propped up by his parents. Part of him wanted to let them. His dad bore the responsibility of the born again Parker’s. It was his idea to bring them back and he was the one who found the spell to lower the veil. The family paid a hefty price for the spell though. The ancestors were furious they had brought back four people from the other side and as a result cut them off. For Tobi, it was a sigh of relief. No longer being controlled by a bunch of dead witches who wanted to keep the natural balance in order. The ancestors didn’t care about why the conven brought the others back. They failed to understand that it was needed to protect themselves against Kai. Surely that would have fallen under the whole natural order bullshit, but apparently not. Blinded by their principles the ancestor turned their back on the Gemini Coven. As clichéd as it sounded, Tobi was of the opinion they didn’t need the ancestors so long as they had each other. Words you would never hear leave his mouth. Obviously Tobi was miffed that his parents didn’t bring him back sooner, as though missing him wasn’t enough. When he first returned he was pissed the only reason he was brought back was because of Kai, but his parents explored the type of magic they didn’t agree with to get their children back. Turning their back on every moral and belief they had. It didn’t mean Tobi forgave them for what happened, especially his father. If they hadn’t been so cruel in the first place none of them would have died. Slowly his parents were trying to fix the wrong they had caused. Losing their children should have been a harsh enough consequence to their actions, but being the one who died Tobi still held an element of fault over them. It was ambitious of him to think the shop owner was going to know what a lapis lazuli was. As if the other man was going to pull out a tray of rings from beneath his till. Tobi wasn’t one to beat around the bush though, rather straight in there with the questions, but unfortunately, the stranger had no idea what he was banging on about. Back to the drawing board, perhaps with the help of his siblings this time for a small cut of the profit. “Fine…” Tobi muttered, ready to leave the shop with empty hands when another voice came from over his shoulder, startling him. He spun around as the stranger moved back, watching her as she clasped her hands behind her back as though she knew exactly what he was talking about. He threw a glance back at the owner as the stranger apologised for stealing his customer, though there was no trace of apology on her face. Looking back at the female, Tobi frowned slightly, as always skeptical towards the other person. He moved away from the counter as the owner disappeared into the back room. Subconsciously he folded his arms, as the frown disappeared from his face. “Where can I find these stones then?” Clearly not in the shop where he expected them to be on sale, again his plan laced with hope. ━ i shut my eyes and all the world drops dead. ━ IT SHOULDN'T HAVE BEEN SO EASY, BUT IT WAS. Andy had forgotten about the thrill of bagging a potential sale. Most of her recent transactions had been done under the cover of night, fleeing between small towns with a trunk full of useless old junk she'd skimmed from anyone naïve enough to sell to her. The pawn shop dealer doled out a heavy, unbothered sigh before removing themselves to the back room. Andy could picture the eye roll, she didn't need to chase it. Rocking on her heels as she grinned openly once he had gone. "Well," She said, drawing out the syllables with anticipation. "I don't exactly got the pockets for it." She patted the small, empty pockets of her ripped mom jeans and shrugged her shoulders simultaneously. "I keep 'em safe." She turned on her heel, sweeping towards the pawn shops from door and opening it with a great flourish, the bell buzzing above her head for punctuation.
"C'mon then," She ushered them both along, questions dancing on the tip of her tongue as she led them out of the shop and down on the sidewalk. The sun was beating on main street and Andy had to squint, pulling a pair of sunglasses from the front of her shirt and bracing them on her nose with one hand. "Now, don't go thinkin' I'm a gossip, but-" Andy side eyed the boy curiously, her brows lifted above the reflective frames of her glasses, "I know that clunky old stone ain't for your style." She clicked her tongue, enjoying the drawn out quality of the supposed mystery. The pawn dealer might've been none-the-wiser, but Andy was not. She'd dealt in lapis too many times, with witches and warlocks of all shapes and sizes, that she knew one when she seen one. Or, so she thought. A part of her would enjoy it if they denied her curiosity. "Who's the daylight ring for, hm?" She asked daringly.

He was confident in his ability to make these daylight rings. He’d read the books and researched the magic. It appeared to be simple, something he could have done when he was a kid, but he was going to need more than his mom’s costume jewellery. Tobi’s gaze fell down on the stranger’s jean pockets. How big were these stones? She appeared to be excited to help him, possibly too excited. Her words carried a ‘I know something you don’t know’ tone. As though she was the only person who held all the answers to his burning questions. His parents told him to never follow strangers, but whatever, this one knew what lapis lazuli were and where to find them. Willingly, he left the store with the woman, “Thanks anyway” Tobi called out the unseen shop owner before the bell rang through the shop as the pair left. He let the door swing close, stepping out onto the streets of Mystic Falls. The sun was blinding, heat radiating down onto the town. Bringing his hand up to shield his eyes he glanced over at the stranger as she spoke, the pair walking side by side. The question he had been anticipating from the outset. Who was the daylight ring for? He laughed lightly, his hand fell to his side as he stepped into the shade provided by the trees on the street. “A friend” He retorted, not bothering to deny his intentions. Tobi had been told about his parents before that he was too outward about his magic at times, often forgetting not everyone had been born into the world of the supernatural. Having been raised in a coven, magic was all he knew and it was easy to get carried out with that notion. His father was constantly worried about people finding out about them, leading to some reenactment of the Salem witch trials. People were ignorant of what was in front of them though. It was something Tobi used in his favour. “So” He began, casting a glance back at the stranger once more. This time studying her for a moment or two, “How do you know about daylight rings? Do you know how to make them?”ANDY LATIMER

━ i shut my eyes and all the world drops dead. ━ 'A FRIEND', he'd said. The vague suggestion lifting Andy's brows over her sunglasses and curling at the corners of her mouth. Andy knew what kind of friends wanted daylight rings, and they didn't go to church every Sunday. At least, not the kind Andy dealt with. "Good friend," He replied knowingly, kissing her teeth and turning her head forward. They walked the streets like two friends, the locals none the wiser as they window shopped and gabbed on ignorantly. Andy half turned to avoid a passing shoulder, hands in her back pockets and a spring in her step. "You got a lot of friends like that?" She asked, chancing her luck. Andy had dealt with vampires plenty of times.
Though her father had been very particular in the company he kept, Andy did not keep up with the same tradition. Magic was magic, and it was better when it was profitable. She'd bought and sold and bartered with many vampires. Hector had been one of many she'd encountered along the way. That didn't mean she trusted them - hard to call a vampire a friend when she was as good a meal as a business partner. Then again, Andy didn't have a lot of friends to begin with. He looked innocent, though, she thought. Her eyes casting sideways to watch the way he loped on gangly legs. A little young, a little fresh faced. She wondered if, once upon a time, she'd looked a little bit like that herself. All soft edges and helpfully minded.
"Uh," Andy hummed thoughtfully, tilting her head so-so. "It comes in handy." She answered, keeping in time with that cautious ambiguity - if only to be an inconvenience. But, she also liked the sound of her own voice, so her silence did not last very long. "I've bought, sold, made a good few." She revealed, grinning as she turned her head to look at them. They were close to the parking lot now, Andy turning her head forward at once to leap over a low bush. Her feet crunching on the dirt as she pulled a small set of keys from her back pocket and bent to unlock the drivers side door of her beat up Pinto. The paint scuffed, and dusted with a great splatter of old, dry dirt. It was a muddy looking thing, with dark windows and a footwell filled with old receipts. Andy lived in it, and it looked like that, but it also reeked of protective magic.
Door open, Andy unlatched the trunk and walked around to pull it open. Motioning for the kid to follow her, though she held her hand up just as quickly to stop him from coming around fully. "Just there's fine," She warned him, eyes gleaming from over her sunglasses. She didn't trust easily, just smug enough to show him where she was parked. Andy knew, if he was worth his salt as a warlock, he would feel the ambient magic cloaking the vehicle. She slept in her car, worked out of her car, and she ran with her car. It made perfect sense that she would drape it in all kinds of magic so that she might sleep a little easier, if not comfortably. In the trunk, Andy pushed aside a bag of rumpled clothes and pulled out a pair of stiletto boots which she handed to the boy expectantly. "Don't drop those," She teased him. "I've heard they're expensive." And then, with a great yank, she pulled up the bottom of the trunk and revealed an old, engraved chest hidden underneath.
Undoing the latching, Andy pulled it open just a crack, peering over her shoulder for watching eyes. When she was sure they were alone, bar a woman walking her dog a good ways in the distance, Andy put her hand inside and rifled around. It only took a moment, with her huffing and muttering to herself, before her hand wrapped around an old woven pouch about the size of the boy's head. She pulled it free and closed the chest, clutching the pouch to her front and closing the trunk over. "Here we go!" She declared, grinning as she leaned her hip against the break light and shook the little bag. It rattled with promise. "You're lucky I like to keep stock, kid." She told him, staring at him expectantly. "How much are you looking for?" Andy asked him finally, "Just the one... or?" She rested the tip of her tongue against the corner of her mouth. "I'll tell you... they're not very cheap." They were, but Andy was a business woman at the end of the day.

Realistically the people he considered friends in Mystic Falls were few and far between. The only people he trusted were his siblings and for good reason. All of his childhood friends believed he was dead. Each and every single one of them had now grown up into actual adults. They had jobs, a house, even a family for some. They were paying bills and buying diapers for their newborns. For Tobi everyone had aged overnight. One minute they were silly teenagers hanging out in parking lots, playing on their bikes, but now it was just him in the parking lot. Alone and disconnected from everyone. He watched on from the other side as they mourned. Lying flowers on his grave and sharing funny stories about him, but eventually, that stopped. Little by little. It started with them going to see him every day, to every week, to every month. Then it was every few years. People had moved on with their lives. They were alive, he wasn’t. Even before he didn’t have any vampire friends. Just the humankind, or witches and warlocks. Their parents warned them not to venture too far from the coven. There were no unexplained happenings in Portland though. It was just a normal place with normal people, which is why their parents settled there. “A few here and there” He retorted with a casual shrug, as he moved alongside her, carefully weaving his way through ongoing pedestrians. He was only mirroring her vague approach, both of them beating around a bush. “Sold a few?” He turned his head slightly to look at her. That certainly stirred an interest in him, as he was looking to fill his wallet. Tobi was the overly eager type though. Wanting to jump in at the deep end without learning how to swim first. These rings sounded simple. He wanted to make them, sell them and repeat. His eyes darted upwards as the female quickly leaped over a small bush. He followed suit, watching as she pulled some keys from her back pocket. Was she about to show him these special stones? He stood back a few inches, sure to keep his distance. Just in case. Tobi’s eyes scanned the body of the car, one that had clearly seen better days. He was in a position to judge, still riding a rusty bicycle everywhere. Cars had really jumped up in price over the past two decades. Naturally he peered inside as she pulled the door open. It was a reflection of his current state. A bit chaotic with nothing belonging anywhere. Tobi followed in her footsteps once more, but stopped abruptly as she instructed to. “Is that why you’ve got your car covered in a cloaking spell? Hiding a dead body in there?” He arched his brow, though his question was rhetorical. He didn’t really care what she was hiding, but the air had that same feeling that surrounded his house back in Portland. To the naked eye, it was just a piece of land, but the Parker household lay beyond the barrier. Cloaking spells had always been their specialty, one of the first spells taught to each Parker. Nonetheless, he stayed put, tilted his head to the side as his gaze drifted off back towards the street. Patiently waited. A pair of boots were shoved into his hands, to which he just about caught. He examined the boots, “Nice” He commented, as he lowered his hands still holding to expensive boots. Craning his head a little, he looked at the heavy looking chest she heaved out of the trunk, “So this is what you’re hiding” He muttered, as the female was scanning their surroundings for nosey onlookers. She pulled a bag of something out of the chest of treasures, shaking it with a grin on her face. Obviously, he was looking for a bag full, just like the one she was holding, but there was no way Coffee Bean wages would stretch that far. “How much is one?” He would know if he did a little bit more research before diving head first into the pawn shop, but it wasn’t as if google held the answers to his questions. He knew he was placing a little bit too much faith in this stranger to answer his questions. ANDY LATIMER

━ i shut my eyes and all the world drops dead. ━ THOUGH SHE DIDN'T APPRECIATE THE KID'S EQUALLY VAGUE reply, Andy had to respect it. He was playing her at her own game, but she was fairly certain she was better at it. Andy already knew there were vampires in Mystic Falls, she didn't need him to confirm it for her, she just wanted an idea of what she was facing. Whether or not the overabundance of supernatural beings would serve to help, or hinder her intentions within the towns limits. As it happened, this was not an answer she was going to get from him. "Fair play," She replied with a quirk of her brows, acknowledging openly that he was edging around the question. Better to lay her cards on the table. "Wouldn't wanna steal your customers." She tutted and gave him a look from head to toe, before she turned and made her way along the sidewalk a step ahead.
"What- you don't charge?" She asked him with a look of objecting disbelief, looking at him over her shoulder as if she expected him to be joking. Andy's entire independent life had been spearheaded by how lucrative her magic could be. From selling her own charmed artefacts, to reselling others. The idea that any witch or warlock existed without taking advantage of their very blood seemed like such a waste to her, though she knew plenty found it too sacred to monetize. She had no such qualms. "Trust me," She pointed a finger at him, the polish chipped and nail beds bitten restless. "If you ain't selling your magic, you're either filthy rich, or just plain touched in the head." Andy regaled wisely, hopping over the bush into the parking lot.
At her car, Andy set about finding the lapis stones. They were cheap to mine, even cheaper to buy in bulk. However, they were not as simple to acquire in bumfuck Virginia, where the best crystal a person could find was some glass quartz. She paused in her rummaging momentarily, locks falling around her face as she looked up with a flat, open mouthed expression. "Uh," She snorted once, dropping her chin with an easy, dismissive shrug. "If you like." It was a simple joke with a dozen different answers. Andy's car was layered with enough protection spells that a stray dog wouldn't even piss on its balding tyres. Let him think her mysterious, Andy thought. The alternative was revealing that she draped it so heavily because her bed was in the backseat, and a warlock as formidable as all hell was tailing her for the shits and giggles.
"Don't look too close now," Andy warned him with a chilling smirk, her sunglasses perched precariously on top of her head as she opened the carved wooden chest. "This thing'll have your eyes first." Andy had draped the chest in a spell that made foreign eyes itch the longer they strained to look at, to decipher the carvings on the outside. It had cost her about a pint of blood, and didn't stop anybody from actually opening the chest, but it was enough discomfort that it tended to put off the less determined. She patted the lid when she retrieved the bag of stones, shaking them with triumph as she set the chest back into its cavity with tender love, and care.
Leaning her hip on the cars tail casually, Andy undid the velvet ties of the bag and loosened the top to peer inside. The stones glimmered inside, some uncut and others carefully formed and polished in preparation of use. All acquired from different sellers, at different points in Andy's journey. She never said no to the odd stray lapis at the occasional estate sale. "Hm," She hummed thoughtfully, looking up to catch the kids eye where he stood by the car, boots clutched in his arms obediently. She clicked her tongue and narrowed her eyes. "120," It was a bit of a stretch, but Andy still pulled a shiny, decent sized lapis to show him. It was one that was lovingly pre-cut, polished. "And I'll show you how to set it into the silver without warping it." She decided she liked the kid, even if he was a bit nosy for her general taste.

Customers. Tobi didn’t even have a clue where to find the vampires in this town. Surely they all congregated somewhere in the dark? Talking about blood and stuff. He hadn’t thought this ‘business plan’ through fully, rather he was just hoping to find some vampires. Somehow. Either way, he’d find a way to make it work. Plus, how hard was it to find a vampire? His parents probably had a fancy spell somewhere in those dusty books that could help him out. “Back at you” He replied, with a grin. Again, having no idea where to find such customers. This woman obviously knew what was what and Tobi had to pretend he was on the same page as her. Although he had no fucking clue what page he was on. Tobi watched as she leaped over the hedge, soon following suit. “Nah I just mean I thought you’d sold lots” He wanted to sell lots. Even make a name for himself. He’d never actually sold his magic before though. Obviously, he’d use it to his own advantage but never for profit. There was a whole new market out there waiting to be explored and he was keen to jump in. His parents would be so pissed at him if they found out what he was up to. Even the whole dead son thing wouldn’t pass with them for this. They’d be acting as if their son was selling his soul to the devil himself. Again, he wanted to pry further about selling his magic but he’d built this image that he was clued up. When in reality he spent 90% of his day being clueless, though that was usually down to smoking too much. His brain turned into melted cheese after a few hours. He loved it. Dismissing his question yet again, bringing a smile to Tobi’s face. He’d spent a large part of his teenage years casting cloaking spells on various bits of contraband he would take into school, though mainly cigarettes and alcohol. The fun stuff, hiding deep in his bag but whenever the teachers asked to check there was nothing there but battered notepads and half-chewed pens. If they were lucky they’d find some chewing gum in there. Tobi was busy inspecting the boots that had been placed into his hands when he realized the woman warned him not to stare at the chest for too long. He glanced down at it, narrowing his eyes as he inspected the carvings. Interesting. Of course, he didn’t have a fucking clue what the carvings were or even meant. Probably some mythical bull. As soon as she opened up that little velvet bag Tobi was looking inside, wanting to know what these stones actually looked like. If anything, he wanted to know their appearance, so he could go out searching for them. He edged back upright, looking at the other woman as she announced her price. 120 dollars. Fuck. He was trying to work out exactly how many hours that would be in the Coffee Bean, but his brain didn’t compute that quickly. It was a lot of hours. A lot of coffee and a lot of small talk with the locals. Was it worth it? But surely some desperate vampire somewhere would be willing to pay even more for a ring. It hit him then that he needed to do more research. The moment it came to parting with his hard-earned cash (though he rarely worked hard). He needed to find some customers to begin with. But now at least he knew what they look like so he could go home and turn his mom’s jewelry cabinet upside down. Of course, he would never steal from his mom, rather come up with some elaborate story as to why he needed her jewelry. Hopefully a story he could make up on his cycle home. The truth was he didn’t even have 120 dollars on him. “I tell you what” He began, swinging his old rucksack off his shoulders. He edged forward again, placing the boots back in the truck. He quickly unzipped his bag, digging around inside. The best he could find was a pencil and a receipt from the ice cream parlour for 2 scoops of chocolate in a waffle cone. He turned the receipt over, using his right knee as a hard surface, he scribbled his number out. On the top, he wrote his name before handing it over to the woman. “Text me and we’ll meet up properly” When he had money, “I gotta run some other errands today” By that, he meant picking up from Ethan. Tobi zipped his bag up, throwing it back on his shoulders with a smooth swing. “Catch ya later” He gave her a short nod before strolling through the car park, back towards the town square. ANDY LATIMER - the end
