Josie was one of those strange people who actually liked being at school but she was still doing her best to enjoy the summer while it lasted. She wasn’t the kind of person who was good at having too much free time on her hands and nothing to do so she was doing her best to share her time between hanging out with her family and friends and helping at the animal shelter. Josie had always liked keeping busy and every year she liked to volunteer at a different place to try and help her figure out what she wanted to do when she graduated. When school started back she was going to be heading into her senior year and that was pretty scary as far as Josie was concerned. She knew that a few of her friends already knew that they wanted to do with their lives when they graduated and there were others who, like her, didn’t have a clue. There were so many options available and Josie had no idea how she was meant to be able to pick just one but she knew that she would figure it out sooner or later. Either way she knew that she was probably going to go down the route of doing something that would help people or animals and she knew that she had her parents to thank for that. Her dad hadn’t wanted to settle for just being a teacher and her mom hadn’t wanted to just be a realtor, they had both decided that they wanted to help kids like her, kids who were supernatural and had probably spent their lives struggling to find a place where they fit in, and she knew that she wanted to do something just as meaningful with her life. For now she was still struggling to figure out what that was and after spending some time hanging out with Raf, Josie had headed to the animal shelter for her shift. She never knew what each day there was going to bring but that was what made it so exciting as far as she was concerned. She really liked helping out there and she knew that she wanted to make the most of it even if it only ended up being for the summer. That day she’d helped feed the animals and as it came time for the dogs’ walk she was the first to volunteer to take them out. There were a lot of dogs at the shelter and she knew that one person couldn’t take them all out together so she gathered together the dogs that she was told to and she knew that the others would end up going out later. For now she made sure that she had everything that she needed before heading out. She had walked a couple of dogs at the same time in the past but she had never taken this many and she relieved to find that they were pretty well behaved. It was a nice day and the walk through the streets of Mystic Falls was actually pretty nice. They’d been out for a while by the time they reached the town square once more and she took a seat on one of the benches along the path so that the dogs could take a look around before she took them back to the shelter. ━ i can't get you out of my head ━ MYSTIC FALLS HAD PROVEN to be a pretty fruitful place as far as answers went. Maybe she didn’t have an exact answer on who, but she knew what happened to her the first time, and… how amazing it was the second time around. The mark from her first bite, on her neck, went from two scabs to healed and invisible in the last few weeks, though the others were still there, thankfully hidden under her clothing. It made it easier not to cause alarm so often now, but she hadn’t packed many clothes to begin with, and they were running scarce from the constant bleeding through.
Krista had never stolen anything in her life, but times were tough. If she was going to keep up this independence thing, she’d have to figure something out, and relying on River (more than she already had) wasn’t an option. It negated the whole reason she was even in Mystic Falls.
So, with her mind set on the mall, Krista trudged her way through the Town Square with purpose, trying to ignore the fact that she was hoping to catch a glimpse of Mal on the way. She’d already stopped him from feeding once (and provided a more viable option); would it be suspicious to do that again? And it was light outside━would he even be at the bar? Were bars open at this time? Would he try to bite somebody (some other girl) in broad daylight?
It seemed Mystic Falls gave as many questions as it answered.
Dark backpack secured around her shoulders, Krista set her eyes on the direction of Campbell’s, decided just to take a quick peek. Maybe he was there, maybe he wasn’t. And if she waited a little while for him to show up… was that so bad? She wasn’t being creepy, right? It was just a crush, no big deal.
Unfortunately, Krista wasn’t good at this whole thing. She got distracted easily, namely by a group of dogs swarmed around some girl sitting on a bench. With a big smile and a gasp of surprise, Krista came closer, approaching slowly. Though she’d never had pets growing up (other than a “stray” kitten she dragged home one time and wouldn’t let go of until the ‘Lost Cat’ posters went up), Krista and River’s parents made sure their kids knew how to behave around animals. You didn’t run up and grab onto them (no matter how much she wanted to).
With her hand stuck out, the back of it presented for the closest dog to sniff, Krista came just a little closer. “Hi!” She said cheerfully, “Can I pet your dogs?” She waited only a moment before raising a hand to scritch the nearest dog’s head carefully.
“Are they all yours, or do you have some kinda dog-walking business? Because, either way, that’s really cool. I’ve always wanted a dog… or any pet at all, really.”

Josie knew that for most people her age the summer was meant to be a time to kick back, relax and do nothing but the truth was that just wasn’t her. Every year she liked to do something different and that year she had decided to work at the animal shelter. Josie had always had a soft spot for animals but with so many people living in the house she knew that adding a pet to the mix probably wasn’t a good idea but that didn’t mean that she didn’t want to. In time she hoped that she might be able to talk her parents around to having a pet but until then she knew that she would just have to make do with enjoying her time with the animals at the shelter while she had the chance. When school started back her senior year would be starting and she was nervous about that but the truth was that she was looking forward to it at the same time. That day she had volunteered to take some of the dogs for a walk and so far they had definitely kept her on her toes but Josie knew that she wouldn’t have it any other way. Her pendant containing magic that she could access when she needed it was hung around her neck just like always and she knew that she could use it if she needed to but she had a feeling that it wouldn’t come to that. Lizzie would probably call it the muggle way of doing things but the truth was that Josie liked doing that sometimes and now was definitely one of those times. The dogs seemed to be enjoying themselves and she was really glad about that. Josie was sat watching them play when another girl approached and Josie felt a smile form on her face as she watched the closest dog sniff the girl’s hand. “Hi,” she said, her voice cheerful as she watched the dog move a little closer to the girl. “Go for it, they love attention,” Josie nodded as one of them moved towards her to be picked up for a cuddle just as she said it. As the girl asked if the dogs were all hers or whether she had some kind of a dog walking business, Josie shook her head. “Neither actually, I’ve been volunteering at the animal shelter and I offered to take the dogs for a walk today,” she explained. “I’ve never had a pet either but being around this lot makes me really want one,” she added, a laugh escaping her lips as the dog she’d picked up chose that moment to lick her face. ━ i can't get you out of my head ━ KRISTA BURNED WITH EXCITEMENT when the girl told her she could pet the dogs, a flutter of a laugh bubbling up from her belly before she finally pet the nearest one, raising her other hand to get the dog beside it. “Oh, they totally deserve it all, too. You’re all such cuties, ain’tcha? Yeah? Look at you guys,” Krista giggled again, going full-on with her baby voice, kneeling to get a little more love, and eventually switch to patting another pair of dogs.
‘Neither actually…’
Hazel eyes jumped up to look at the stranger again, forgetting for only a moment that somebody else was there with Krista and the dogs. She beamed as she listened, especially when the other girl’s chosen pup started lapping at her face. “Really?” She asked, astonished as if Krista had never heard of such a thing before. Obviously she knew what an animal shelter was, and it made sense, but there were a million different good things happening right now━what with meeting a bunch of happy, friendly dogs and hopefully a new friend, too━and so she couldn’t stop herself from getting all giddy. “That’s, like, really awesome. Most perfect job ever. The only thing better than that would be getting paid to do it.”
Slowly, she stood back up, making it easier to lean over the pack and get better access to some of the dogs she hadn’t been able to love on yet. “Saaaame. I wish I had a dog. Like, somebody to hang out with you twenty-four-seven and love you unconditionally, but also won’t argue with you? The dream.” But Krista’s mind wandered, and she thought, if Mal ever started to like her (which would be super crazy but also super amazing), then she wouldn’t mind arguing if it meant they were, like, in love or something. That would be awesome. Her cheeks burned at the thought, stomach fluttering, unknowingly sinking deeper into some fantasy world. But, if vampires and stuff were real, then it wasn’t so crazy to believe one object of her affection would finally like her back.
With her eyes ticking up, Krista smiled again. “That’s a super pretty necklace, by the way.” She kept on being a little bundle of cheer, remembering what she was taught about making friends: Be nice, compliment them, find some mutual interest to talk about… check, check, check. But there was one other thing━oh! “I’m Krista! I’m kinda new to Mystic Falls, so it’s really cool meeting fellow dog lovers ‘n stuff.” She laughed, hoping she wasn’t awkward and that maybe this girl would think she wasn’t so bad, either.
