Josie hadn’t known if they had even needed any help at the animal shelter when she had gone there to ask but as it turned out they had done and Josie was more than happy to step in and do what she could. She would be the first to admit that she didn’t have a huge amount of experience with animals, she’d never had a pet of her own since the house had always been crazy enough with ten of them living under one roof without adding an animal to the mix as well but she’d spent some time around her friends’ pets and she had ended up babysitting them a few times over the years when her friends had gone away so she knew that it all helped. As it was she was really in her element right now, she’d had to get her hands dirty and do some of the not quite so nice jobs but for the most part she was really enjoying it. Every year she found a different way to volunteer and do some good and considering that she was still figuring out what she wanted to do when she got to college she knew that it wasn’t a bad thing. It was more than just doing enough to make her college applications look good even though she was pretty sure that she was going to end up going to the Salvatore College, as far as Josie was concerned it was more about figuring out what she wanted to do with her life and she knew that by doing as many different things as possible then it should make figuring that out that much easier. That morning she and Lizzie had spent some time hanging out and Josie had enjoyed being able to spend some time with her sister but as time went on she knew that she needed to get going. She had a shift at the animal shelter that afternoon and she couldn’t deny that she was looking forward to it. She’d managed to get to know a few of the people that worked there so far and she’d quickly come to realise that there was a lot of fun to be had working there. The animals were incredible and Josie really couldn’t understand why so many of them were struggling to find homes. Some had been abandoned and some had been taken from their owners because they weren’t being treated the way they should be. Josie knew that she would never understand how someone could do either of those things to an animal and she was trying to make things better for at least some of them while she was there. Reaching the shelter, she soon set about her work and as she moved through the cages she spotted one of the dogs that she had been looking after the day before looked particularly down. “Hey Buddy, what’s going on?” she asked as she opened the cage and stepped inside. “You don’t look so good,” she said as she crouched down next to him and stroked him gently before looking up as she heard footsteps approaching. “Hey Des, has he been like this all day?” she asked, unable to keep the note of worry out of her voice as she spoke. ━ i'll stay awake at night with just my skin and bones ━ DESTINY WAS TRYING HER hardest not to lose focus or break down at the shelter. When she was taking photos for her actual job, it wasn’t so hard━she had to be out and about a lot of the time, wandering around and snapping pictures of news-worthy things, but at the animal shelter? She was stuck in one building, incapable of escaping her thoughts, and boy were they ever swarming in.
Anything from Leah to Grey to… all that could come of this. She was constantly nervous, glancing over her shoulder wherever she went and bringing Berlioz with her almost every time she left the house. He was pretty friendly almost always, but he looked intimidating, what with the apparent split head, giving him clear attributes of a pitbull. He was at least half pitty, but when she’d adopted him from that very shelter a few years back (before Tanner’s return and her vacation), they put “lab mix” on his papers. Destiny scoffed at it then and now━though pitbulls weren’t banned in Virginia, they still didn’t get adopted frequently. He’d saved her on more than one occasion, and she couldn’t have been happier.
So, yeah, she used his scary looks to her advantage, but he was truly like a teddy bear in dog form. Someone like Leah, though… she probably wouldn’t give a shit about a dog━she was strong enough to pretty much force-choke Destiny, and Tanner was just a human and could have Berlioz out of the way in minutes.
Destiny sighed heavily from where she was behind the desk, sorting through the newest bin of donations. Taking her dog out with her all the time was just an illusion of safety━wouldn’t actually do anything in the long run, and she might end up putting him in more danger.
Yeah, she really couldn’t escape her thoughts here.
‘Hey Des, has he been like this all day?’
Thankfully, though, she wasn’t alone for the day. Destiny lifted her head, glancing down the hall to where Josie was by the dog cages. Furrowing her brow, she dropped the towels she was folding back into the hamper they’d arrived in and walked around the counter, following the sound of Josie’s voice. “Hm?” She asked, though it was more like a hum as she neared the cage, stepping inside as well and kneeling at the dog’s other side. “He seemed fine this morning, just a little groggy. Did he eat?” She glanced over her shoulder at the food dish, finding it full.
Blue eyes trained back onto the dog, lifting one hand to lay on his back, petting him gently, though she trailed her hand down his spine with slight pressure to see if he winced at all. She’d need her training for this━Grey taught her how to get into their minds and control them, but surely she could use it for good, too, right? He’d presented as a two-way communication of sorts, like if she tried to use it on Berlioz, she’d know what he was feeling. This couldn’t be much different. “Did you see if any of the other dogs are like this? Could be a food or an environment issue,” Not likely, but as her eyes ticked up to Josie’s, she hoped she could distract the girl for a moment while she tried getting into the dog’s head. Destiny was still new at this, so who knew how long or how much energy it would take.
Focusing back on the dog, Destiny breathed slowly, staring into his eyes. She went through the steps Grey outlined: picture what he’s picturing, see yourself, imagine your mind inside his. Within a few moments, and with a shitload of concentration, eventually, she was in the dog’s head, having him lift his own and stare up at Josie.

Josie hadn’t been helping out at the animal shelter for too long but the truth was that she was enjoying it. She had never had a pet of her own as the house was crazy enough with so many of them in it but being around the animals that lived there was enough to make her want to change that. She wasn’t sure if she would be able to talk her parents into letting her have a pet of her own but she knew that she wanted to try. She loved spending so much time around the animals at the shelter and she was learning so much. She’d done a different job each summer to keep herself busy but so far this was her favourite. She knew that working there was only temporary but the people she had been working with so far were pretty great as well so she knew that she couldn’t ask for anymore than that. That day Josie was checking on the dogs and making sure they were doing ok when she realised that one of them didn’t look right. He had been a little quiet all day but now he didn’t seem to want to move and she couldn’t deny that she was worried. Calling Destiny over, Josie shook her head as the other girl asked if the dog had eaten. “No, he hasn’t touched his food,” she said as Destiny moved in to check on the dog, causing Josie to move out of the way so she could do just that. “The others all seemed fine but I’ll check. I think it’s just this little guy,” she said, knowing that that was what worried her the most. If any of the other dogs were like this then there could be an obvious reason for it but they all seemed to be their usual selves. Josie moved away from the cage to go and check on the other dogs but there didn’t seem to be anything wrong with them at all, they all seemed happy and they’d all eaten their food. Returning a few minutes later, she realised that Destiny had gone quiet and it didn’t take Josie long to realise that there was something going on. It wasn’t magic in the sense that she was used to but as the dog finally lifted its head she couldn’t shake the feeling that there was something going on and the fact that Destiny wasn’t moving didn’t help. “Destiny, what’s going on?” she asked, an unsettled feeling starting in the pit of her stomach as she looked from Destiny to the dog and back again. ━ i'll stay awake at night with just my skin and bones ━ DESTINY BREATHED THROUGH THIS, slow and sure, attempting to think of Grey’s teachings without thinking of the man himself (which proved to be really difficult). She thought of the squirrel, how their session ended that time and most times before, back when shit was simple between them. It was far from that now, and she wondered if it’d ever be alright again. It wouldn’t be the same, but maybe she could…
Ugh, she didn’t know what she wanted, but right now her focus was supposed to be on the dog. Okay, Destiny thought, breathe. Focus. And she did. Within moments after Josie left, she saw the world the way the dog was, those big, brown eyes sliding around, finding Josie when she returned. It was too soon, Destiny thought, and she didn’t get much. A little eruption of pain in her side, maybe kidney-area-ish, which would make sense.
But she wasn’t confident in her abilities yet, and it took longer than she’d hoped to maintain control and move her own body instead of the dog’s. He kept staring at Josie while Destiny tried to turn her head the same way, and, with a delay, she eventually got her own blue eyes on Josie’s face. “I’m not sure; maybe we should call Rhiannon and see if she can take a look at him. I was just… seeing if he wanted to, y’know, show off some secret telepathic ability.” Destiny joked lamely, looking back to the dog, who turned his head to stare at her in unison. She was trying to let go, to release him from the hold in her mind, but it wasn’t as easy with somebody else (who wasn’t Grey) standing there while the nerves erupted in her. Trying to test the connection, Destiny lifted the hand that wasn’t gently petting his head, though immediately dropped it when she saw his paw moving like a puppet with its strings pulled, mimicking her movements. “It’s okay, buddy, we’re gonna make sure somebody looks after you.” Destiny cooed to the dog, verbally and telepathically, watching him almost sigh in relief. She really had to stop this before it got too weird, but Destiny couldn’t help herself from caring for the animal.
