Raik stood by their car in the police station's parking lot, one hand leaning on the vehicle as he was trying to regain control of breathing. His younger brother had been pulled in for questioning a few hours ago, and Raik had spent that time pacing the police station waiting for his brother, or an officer, to emerge. He was preparing himself for the worse. Remzi was going down for murder. The older Durmaz was fast asleep in their motel room, having only arrived in Mystic Falls the day before, when an anonymous call came through on his cell phone, stirring him from his slumber. The bed next to him was empty, drawing him the conclusion that something terrible had happened to Remzi. It was something Raik had been dreading for a long time. His brother had been arrested on suspicion of murder. "Siktir!" He spoke sharply, still using the vehicle to steady himself, "What the hell happened? You have some serious explaining to do!" He was furious at his younger brother, not only for being so stupid as to wander the streets covered in blood but also dragging him as well. When the officer pushed the door open and asked Raik to come through to answer a few questions he felt the floor drop from beneath his feet, holding back the urge to the sick. "It's a good job the death penalty isn't legal here because one of us can still die from the lethal injection" Raik removed his hand from the car, taking a deep breath as he did so, wiping his sweaty palms over his jeans. There was still an uneasy feeling swirling around in his stomach, making him feel queasy. That was a close call. Too close. "You told me you had this under control" Remzi had assured his sibling that he could control his urges and he had nothing to worry about. Raik was starting to think maybe it was a bad idea to have believed his brother so easily. The brothers came here looking for a fresh start, but their names were already known by the police less than 24 hours later. The officer said he would remove Remzi as a suspect, noting him down as a witness instead, but it didn't make Raik feel any better about the situation. Their names were somewhere in the police records now. Raik was a man who liked to stick on the right side of the law and believed rules were in place for a reason. He'd never even received a speeding ticket, yet here he was in a police station with an officer throwing around words such as 'accomplice' and 'accessory'. Luckily the officer let the pair go after Remzi told him the blood on his clothes had nothing to do with him, rather another vampire who couldn't control their urges. They pulled Raik in to vouch for his younger brother, which he didn't without hesitation despite the doubts lingering in his mind that Remzi had killed someone and blood splattered across his clothes was his victim. Raik held it together in front of the office, pushing his morals aside he went along with the story for Remzi's sake. REMZI DURMAZ

━ like sisyphus pushing that rock uphill, or echo falling for a daffodil ━ Cops didn’t make Remzi nervous━not even detectives who took themselves too seriously. He’d been questioned enough times in his life, and seemingly became less respectful as he got older. He didn’t fear a harsher punishment most of the time, but this was… different. As he’d said to the detective before, undead bacon. Haram.
The guy could’ve let him burn but, thankfully, he’d understood Remzi’s predicament and went a little easier on him. Remzi didn’t want to drag Raik into this, his brother was his last possible option, but the new vampire didn’t really have a leg to stand on without him━Raik was Remzi’s only alibi. And people seemed to trust him. Something about his demeanour, or the way he always kept his nose clean. When they pulled up Remzi’s record, there was a scoff, a knowing look because of all the times he’d been pulled in as a kid, and then the overdose from those illegal substances. Little notes written out, as if that described who he was━Remzi was still an asshole without the criminal record, but still. He kinda wished they’d taken him as a face-value-douchebag rather than judge him by previous transgressions.
Raik, though… well, he came up clean. Military service, honourable discharge. His biggest fault was sharing a mom with a delinquent like Remzi.
Remzi was always bringing him down, wasn’t he? The road trip was his idea, he’d been the one to insist Raik come along after he got home, even after Remzi’s scandal (which he constantly played down for his brother’s sake). Remzi was the partier, the culprit who drew Raik into parties where everybody was doing less-than-honourable shit and whose jobs were just as bad. He’d even got them talking to those girls that night━those vampires━and suggested they ‘continue the party’ back at the boys’ place. The memory alone made him queasy.
Still, when he saw Raik, Remzi put on a big grin for his brother━even despite that orange jumpsuit, and the cuffs around his wrists that foretold a future conviction. It hadn’t happened yet━just the only clothes they had for him.
Remzi lingered just inside the door, waiting for Raik to come in. “Sakin ol, abi.” He chuckled, reassuring his brother as if they weren’t literally standing in a police station, and Remzi didn’t have dried blood-splatter still on his face. “It’s okay. They just wanna ask you a few questions.”
‘You told me you had this under control.’
The younger Durmaz frowned at that, looking away from Raik for a moment, chin tilting down. “I do. It wasn’t me.” He glanced back at Raik, into his brother’s eyes this time, hoping he caught the look Remzi was sending over━back me up, believe me, go with my story. It hurt asking Raik to lie, but it… wasn’t really a lie if Raik didn’t actually know the truth, right?
Obviously, they were questioned separately, and when Raik emerged, the irritating look on the uniformed officer’s face was a good sign. He handed Remzi his bloody clothes in a neat little pile, and gave him the privacy to change.
Once he was back in those bloody, sweaty clothes and the cuffs were off, Remzi trudged out of the room, that shit-eating grin still on his face. He gave the detective a salute, signed out, and didn’t speak until he and Raik were walking back to the car.
“See? I told you it’d work out. You’ll dig yourself an early grave if you keep stressing like that, abi. Bad for your heart.” Remzi beamed, patting his own chest twice, palm slapping flat over his heart. He glanced up at the sky, still a dark blue, the parking lot only illuminated by the yellow lights dotted across it. “Do you think there’s anything open right now? McDonald’s?” He asked as if it did anything for his system, craving the greasy meal like he always did after a rough night━usually he had a hangover when he was leaving a police station, but eh, times change.

If his heart could beat right out of his chest right now, it would. Raik was worried, and rightly so. All he wanted to do was keep his little brother safe and that included keeping him out of prison. Raik thought he was going to swallow his own tongue when the officer called him in for questioning. Asking him to confirm whether or not his brother had killed someone. With a drip of sweat rolling down his back, he told the office Remzi had done nothing wrong. His brother was innocent and the story he was telling was the truth. One thing Raik was taught in the military was to remain calm in stressful situations. Approach everything with a clear head, which is what he did when he was pulled into the questioning room. He couldn’t let the officer know he was panicking, he remained composed as the office threw question after question at him. Somehow the pair were released. No charges. Now they were stood in the parking lot. Raik taking deep breathes whilst holding onto the shitty vehicle they’d bought back in LA to get them here. “With all this shit you keep pulling, of course, I’m gonna end up in an early grave” He moved around to the back of the vehicle throwing the trunk open as he pondered how their parents put up with Remzi whilst he was away in the military. The more time spent with his younger brother the more he’d started to think maybe that overdose was more serious than he made out. “You promise me it wasn’t you? And I won’t be pissed at you if it was, but I need to know” If they were going to get through this nightmare Remzi needed to be truthful with his brother. He reached into the trunk, fumbling around in his belongings until he found a clean t-shirt. “Put this on” He threw the t-shirt in Remzi’s direction as his younger sibling mentioned McDonald’s. Raik was starving now he came to think of it. The uneasy feeling in his stomach had started to settle now they were outside in the fresh air and not being questioned by the police. He explained to the officer that Remzi was a good man, despite what it said on paper, and he refused to believe his brother was capable of killing anyone. The last bit was true until recently. He knew as a human Remzi wouldn’t have killed anyone, but he wasn’t human anymore. He was something else completely. Something that was designed to kill people. He glanced down at his watch. Still another hour or so until sunrise. “There’s probably a drive-thru somewhere. I doubt they serve human blood though” He quipped, in an attempt to lighten his own mood if anything. Raik lifted a hand, rubbing his forehead with his fingers. “You’ve gotta be on your best behaviour from now on. We came here for a fresh start and to find you one of those daylight rings… do you have any idea where we can even get one because you’re starting to look a bit pale, abi” He looked over at his brother with a warm grin on his face. ━ like sisyphus pushing that rock uphill, or echo falling for a daffodil ━ Remzi didn’t like lying to his family. Most of the time, though, it didn’t really rest on his conscious as much as it should’ve. Was he guilty about not feeling guilty? Maybe. Probably. Whatever. Either way, he’d made a habit of it. As a kid, it started off with little white lies to their parents━who he was out with, what they were doing, where his bruises had come from. Even before he’d started to hang out with a different friend group from his brother’s, Remzi would have to coach Raik through lying to their parents━well, it was more like asking him to keep his mouth shut and not look so fucking guilty; Remzi would do all the lying. It only happened once or twice, but Remzi could never understand how Raik had such difficulty with it.
Remzi never did. He felt like he should’ve with Raik especially, though. Guilty for not feeling guilty.
He told himself this was for Raik’s own good. If he didn’t know about it, he wouldn’t worry, and it would keep him safe in case shit like this ever happened again. Plus, if Raik thought it was the truth, then he’d be able to help Remzi out again. People believed Raik.
“No, abi, it wasn’t me. Inşaallah, they find the vampire who did it, and my hands will be clean.” Remzi lifted his hands, going as far as to mime wiping them clean while staring straight at Raik. He could pull this off smoothly, he knew as much, because he’d told Raik lies a million times before. They usually were only half-truths, whereas this one was a little heavier, but it was still all the same shit to Remzi. Thankfully, Raik didn’t have that advanced hearing to pick up on heartbeat tells, either.
Remzi came to the other side of the car, following Raik and easily snatching the clean t-shirt from the air. “Teşekkür,” He stripped it off in the middle of the parking lot, giving little to no thought about the fact that they were still in public, much less at a police station of all places. Remzi tossed the blood-stained shirt into the trunk while it was still open and then moved to the front of the car, lingering by the passenger’s side door.
His eyes flicked up at Raik’s joke, smirking back at his older brother with a playful eye roll. “Would be better if they did.” Then he wouldn’t need to go hunting for live humans to rip apart. Not that he’d meant to kill her, but once he started, Remzi just… couldn’t stop. He didn’t have the willpower for it━not yet, anyway. At the comment about being pale, though━Remzi flipped his brother off for that one. “Yarrak kafa,” He said, voice playful and teasing, not an ounce of harshness or intended insult to it.
“When am I not on my best behaviour?” That shit-eating grin was back. It’d started from the minute he was born, really. “I have no idea where to get a daylight ring, and the detective in there wasn’t helpful at all.” With his chin, he nodded upwards to the station. “But we’ll find somewhere, abi. Don’t worry. It’s in God’s hands.” He kissed the tips of his fingers, and then pointed to the sky, giving Raik a look that was only half sincere. While his faith had been reignited after his accident, he was mostly using this to his advantage. With the same hand, Remzi grabbed the door handle and tugged it open, letting himself fall heavily into the seat.
He surveyed the parking lot for a moment, waiting for Raik to get in. Once he did, Remzi swung his head to the side lazily, beaming at Raik. “So… McDonald’s? Could really use a burger. And some fries. Maybe half the menu.” Again, human food wouldn’t do much, but he couldn’t help the cravings that lingered anyway.

Raik narrowed his eyes at Remzi, watching him for a moment. There was no point though, his brother never faltered when lying. There were no tell-tale signs, unlike Raik who would stumble over his words and nibble the inside of his cheek. Remzi was an expert and even Raik would struggle to tell if his own brother was telling him the truth or not. He struggled to tell if anyone was lying to him, instead taking people’s word as gospel. Too trusting of those around him, including his sibling at times. “If I find out you’re lying I’ll rat you out myself” He wouldn’t though. Raik would never do anything to get his brother into trouble, even if it meant bending his own morals in the process. “And I’ll tell mom you’re a vampire” He pointed aggressively at his sibling, before lowering his finger slowly to get Remzi a fresh top from the trunk. Again, he would never tell his mom the truth. She would yell at Raik too, telling him he should have been looking after his little brother and he knows Remzi can be troublesome. This time Remzi had swept him along and Raik was just as deep in this shit as his sibling. The officer even said himself, they could have him on charges related to murder. It made his head spin and as much as he wanted to pack up and head back to Detriot, he couldn’t. Raik walked to the driver’s side, laughing at Remzi’s harmless insult, “Siktir git” He retorted, the playful tone matching his brother’s. There had never been a day where Remzi had been on his best behaviour, even as a child he was the one getting into trouble at school and coming home with detention slips. Their report cards were worlds apart. Teachers praised Raik for his good grades, polite manners and attentive listening. Remzi on the other hand was disruptive, argumentative and misbehaved every day. His brother was looking at him with that stupid grin on his face. The same one he wore as a child when his mom was grilling the brothers on something or other. “The way you’ve been behaving God will do everything in his power to prevent you from getting one of these daylight rings… You shall not take life, which God has made sacred” Raik had never been particularly religious either, but still attended the Mosque as and when. He believed in God, and tried to live in his life sin-free, as best he could. The whole saving himself for marriage was off the table though, along with praying five times a day, but he was a saint compared to Remzi though. His brother would set on fire if he were to enter Mecca. He pulled the driver’s side door open and got into the vehicle as his sibling was listing off what he wanted to order from McDonald's. “Get it loaded on google maps then. I’m assuming it’s a bit of a drive” There was no sign of a 24-hour drive-thru on the way into the small town. In fact, there wasn’t much at all as they approached Mystic Falls. Trees lining the side of the road, with little signs of chain restaurants. He paused as he was about to put the keys in the ignition before turning his body to Remzi, “You promise me it wasn’t you?” All elements of playfulness and joking were removed from his voice, being replaced with a serious and low tone. ━ like sisyphus pushing that rock uphill, or echo falling for a daffodil ━ Raik seemed to be at least half-serious when he threatened to tell their mom about Remzi’s dirty little secret, but the younger Durmaz was grinning through it, chuckling as if it was only a playground insult. Like how Raik used to swear he would taddle, let Remzi beg for his loyalty, and then say something completely different by the time their mom walked over. He saw Raik do it to other kids, too, and it was funny then, but never when he freaked the shit out of Remzi.
Swearing to Allah might’ve been a step too far, but Remzi had little care and conscience for the matter. Somewhere in that empty head, he did believe there was a higher power━had to be if Leah worked for Death itself and carted souls to the afterlife━but had no trouble behaving in less-than-favourable ways towards God. Surely the guy had to have a sense of humour, no? Running Heaven would be shitty without one.
Beaming cheekily over the top of the car, Remzi listened as Raik quoted the Quran, recognizing it from his (somewhat forced) recitations after that long hospital visit. Sitting with nothing but himself and God did help, it was the reason he still wore the Evil Eye charm around his neck, he just wasn’t ready to give up who he was to become a different man. Remzi was irresponsible and dishonest, two things their religion definitely tried to breed out of them, and that was... well, that was it. And he liked it that way. It made life more entertaining.
“...except for the requirements of justice.” Remzi completed the script, amused by himself. Not that he (or this “other vampire”) tore somebody up for their sins, Remzi just had to argue no matter what it was. If they were supposed to believe murder was justifiable for one reason, then Remzi would bend that as much as he could. He’d take his own argument and twist it up, changing it until it was moulded into a metaphorical square and could fit the requirements.
Opening the door, Remzi settled in the passenger seat, immediately grabbing the adjustment lever and reclining back his chair. He curled one arm over his eyes lazily, sighing as if he could sleep right then and there. “Probably.” He mumbled, waiting a few seconds before finally gaining the momentum to tug his phone from his pocket.
‘You promise me it wasn’t you?”
Raik’s tone alone had Remzi glancing up, arm shifting to rest across his forehead instead, allowing Remzi to meet his brother’s eyes. Something tugged at his chest, a twist and a pull that reminded Remzi of his humanity. He was lying to his brother, the person he trusted even more than his own parents. The one who’d been there for him all his life and continued to support him━even through all this shit. Could he really keep lying? And over something this big?
“I promise, abi. It wasn’t me.” Remzi matched Raik’s tone, holding his gaze for a moment to ensure the lie was sold. Then they ticked back to his phone, pulling up the nearest twenty-four-hour McDonald’s. “It’s only about twenty minutes. Just drive past the Grill, and it’s pretty much a straight line out of town.” He offered, not feeling an ounce of sickness over his lie then, or even later when they chowed down on greasy, fast food.
