Dani might not even have seen it as a debt but after all she had done for him, Cory wanted to be able to do something for her. Getting her demon inhabited husband back, getting him free of that thing, wasnât on the same level as making sure he had new sneakers for school or cooking him mac and cheese at 1am when the chemo left everything else that got past his lips tasting like crap and he needed something to try and keep enough meat on his bones to keep him going. He couldnât turn back the clock for her â not on Oliver, or on what had happened to turn her into what she was â even his kind couldnât do that. God, he wanted to though. To erase that look that had been in her eyes when heâd arrived, the pain he knew mustâve been settled like an agonised hollow in her chest. What heâd been given had allowed him to come back, not much more.
But maybe it would be enough.
With promises wrung from the both of them, he had pulled her to her feet. He could still feel the hug theyâd shared moments before, Daniâs arms wrapped around him in a way heâd missed so sorely up there. Strength singing in his chest because of her. A bond, love, that he pulled on, carried into that jump with him. His hand clutched around hers in case he lost her in whatever it was he passed through to get them from the park to the club â a short hop at least instead of the country wide leaps heâd made trying to track her and Brooke down in the first place. Cory let out an explosive breath as they landed. Safe. He hadnât lost her in that between, left searching for her forever.
He shot her a nervous grin, his heart beat taking a minute to calm. In seconds it was gonna be pounding to the beat of the music that throbbed in the air even at this time of the afternoon anyway. No matter the time of the day there was somebody here, heâd learned that in the handful of times heâd been tugged there to deal with the bodies that tended to drop all over town with an alarming regularity. âYou get used to it ⌠after a while,â he said, his other hand rising to smooth over his stomach. It had been like a rollercoaster ride those first couple of times, although he sure was Augustus had purposefully made all of that rougher on him than necessary to teach him a lesson about what heâd actually signed himself up for here. âStay close,â he warned lightly as he drew Dani towards the bar. Things should have been safe enough but you never knew in this town.
The nerves were back as he spotted Damien at the bar. Maybe it wouldâve been easier to try and track down Leah but there was a greater chance Leah would make him jump through hoops for this, there was some part of her that always seemed to get a kick out of getting to hold something over him. âI ⌠needed to talk,â he explained, one hand coming up to rub at the back of his neck as he squeezed Daniâs hand. His palms were sweaty, his throat tight. âHeâs a ⌠coworker,â he told Dani even as Damien shot out a hand, a tight grin on his face.
âDamien,â he told her with that acerbic tone. âA twin huh? And heâs dragging you in here? Cory, thought you had more sense than that. Iâm not in the talking mood.â
Cory shifted uneasily on his feet, that hand on his neck shooting out to grab Damienâs arm as he went to turn away from him. He didnât want him disappearing before he could ask. âWeâre trying to find someone - my brother-in-law.â The hand on Damienâs arm tightened.
âI take it youâre looking?â Damien turned towards Dani with his dark brows rising over the rim of his glasses. âWho is it? Or should I ask what is it?â He winged a brow at Cory before looking back at the blonde, his face impassive.

â sorry can't save me now. i'm not okay i feel so scattered â
OPTIMISM wasnât something that Danielle had much of anymore. With all the shit that she had been through all her life - first with losing her brother to a freak car accident, then with losing her husband to a demon possession, and finally with dying herself and waking up as a vampire, it was safe to say that Danielle had been through the ringer. If she were being honest, she had never had a normal life, not what everyone would have expected her to have. With distant parents, she had to look after her and her twin brother. Always the protector, Danielle did everything she could to make sure Cory had the life he deserved. Him getting cancer hadnât been the plan, but she did her damndest to make sure he got the best care possible and he had come out on top, having beat cancer. But that hadnât mattered, because shortly after he had died in a car accident and suddenly her life had been turned upside down. Which is where Oliver came into play and had quite literally saved her life.
Which is why losing him had been so fucking hard.
That was why she was determined to get him back, no matter the cost. Even if the two didnât end up together, she owed him. Oliver didnât deserve the life he had been handed no more than she did. Whatever it took, she was going to get that thing out of him once and for all. Oliver deserved that much, he deserved to have his life back, although that would prove difficult. She had spent years searching for him, only to come up empty handed each and every time. It was frustrating as hell. Where the hell was this demon? Why was it so well hidden? Did it know she was searching for it? Who the hell knows, but one thing was for certain, she would never give up. She had the time.
Thankfully, she had her brother to help her in her search. Him being a reaper meant that he had access to resources that she didnât, which could come in handy, especially where demons were concerned. She had learned that they were some tricky bastards, but she had done her research, she knew what made them tick, what their weaknesses were, and whenever she came face to face with the bastard that took her husband from her⌠she was going to make him pay. First things first though, she had to find him. Hopefully Coryâs contact could provide some insight, any kind of lead. She would take quite literally anything at this point. Anything that could possibly lead her to Oliver.
âStay close,â Cory had told her as they went further into the bar. This was weird to say the least, him protecting her. While he had always been protective, she had been the more extroverted and determined twin. She had been the one to stand up for him, always willing to fight someone who wronged him. But now things were reversed. He was a reaper and with great power comes great responsibilities. The power he held would hopefully come in handy with searching for Oliver, at least⌠she hoped it would.
Danielle felt Cory squeeze her hand as he spoke to the man, who she could only assume was another reaper, which was confirmed when Cory told her that he was a coworker. Definitely another reaper. She could tell Cory was nervous, glancing down briefly at his feet which continued to shift back and forth. This time she gave his hand a reassuring squeeze, that it would be alright. Danielle had always been able to handle herself, with being in a male dominated field she had to. But now she was even more powerful than she had used to be, becoming a vampire did have its perks and she was no longer a fragile human. She could handle herself just fine, this time was no different. Danielle studied the man in front of them intently, listening as he mentioned how he wasnât in a talking mood, even if they were looking for someone. She wasnât one to let things go that easily and before she could say a word, Cory mentioned how they were looking for his brother-in-law, which then prompted Damien to turn his focus towards her, asking her who or rather, what she was looking for.
She chose to ignore that last comment as she opened her mouth to answer. âIâm looking for Oliver Everett, a demon who has been possessing him for a few years now. I havenât been able to track it down to send it back to where it came from..â She said bitterly, tone full of spite and hatred, her jaw clenched tightly as she thought about sending that bastard who had taken her husband hostage straight back to Hell. She relished in the thought of getting her revenge on that thing and it would happen. One way or another she would find the demon and get Oliver back, even if it was the last thing she ever did.

Leah wouldâve laughed at him. Sheâd scoffed probably a half dozen times since heâd fallen for the sob story sheâd told him and had talked Death into bringing her on to the team so to speak. It had been like standing up in front of the whole class on bring your parent to work day, trying to stammer through the mumbled explanation why he didnât have anybody there. Shifting nervously, pale eyes daring to tick up to Deathâs for just a heartbeat before they skittered away again. Augustus had abandoned him then, and all those times since, like between the two of them they wanted to keep naĂŻve little Cory just that blind. With Dani it was different, sheâd always tried to shield him from all the pain that was out there, the sun that could blaze eye searingly bright to chase back whatever darkness tried to swarm him.
Pushing through the dark of the club now Cory felt like maybe he could be the sun for her. Someone who dipped in and out of that grim, vicious side of the world the way he did had to have seen something to give them a starting place with Oliver. If it wasnât gonna be Leah, then heâd go down the line of others, rattling the bars of the cage in his head that Augustus seemed to retreat to when he was in residence now. Kicking down every door until Oliver and the thing that had taken him over turned up behind one of them. Brooke wouldâve been there at his shoulder, feral with it, but like with Dani, he didnât want her dipping her toe any deeper into these waters than necessary.
It almost felt as they were lapping at his ankles in the club now. Rising up towards his knees as he waded in to the bar. Daniâs hand still clutched in his, his heart rising up in his throat at the sight of Damien at the bar. Not Elias at least, heâd have dragged Dani away if it had been the cold, hulking FBI agent there, babbling some apology instead of forcing those words out. Cory felt his palm begin to sweat as Danielle squeezed it but took strength from it, lifting his head to explain not just that heâd brought âsomeone elseâ into this, but who they were looking for. âIt would be a favour,â Cory said softly, watching the bitterness slowly bite at Dani. âThere was some reason it came for him. We donât know it but it means heâs got to be somewhere and we ⌠well, you know âŚâ Like he had to explain their job to a man whoâd been doing it decades longer than him.
Some little part of him had hoped that maybe it would be as simple as dropping a name. Damien would grumble a bit and then whip the two of them off to some secluded little town and a brother-in-law maybe they could fix as easily as snapping their fingers. Of course, Cory knew it didnât work that way but even after every heâd seen there was still enough hope in him to unfurl like a flag as Damien hugged out a breath and cut a glance his way. âHave you seen something? Spoken to someone who might know where to at least start pulling threads?â Babbled questions that dried up on his tongue as Damien turned back to lift his drink.
Shoulders hunched under the cover of the dark suit that always seemed strangely formal but somehow fitting for what they did. Damien lifted his now empty glass towards the long haired bartender. âYour brother seems to think weâre private detectives on the side.â He twisted back around and those narrowed blue eyes fixed squarely on Dani. âThere are plenty of demons in town you could try talking to and he knows it.â The lights glinted on the pomaded dark hair as he tipped his head in Coryâs direction. âTheyâre not gonna leave just from you asking nicely. You know the thing in your husband wonât either, right? Thatâs not the way those things work honey.â There was an indulgent smile then, just tugging faintly at his lips.
Coryâs brows furrowed, a knot tightening in his gut. Was that what it was going to come to? Track down a demon, try and wring information out of it. The mental image had Augustus puffing out his chest, like heâd make him swagger up to one to do it now but Cory felt his stomach twist. Heâd taken the souls of the shells left behind after a demon had hollowed them out before but heâd never hurt anything himself. Didnât know if he could, even if it meant getting Oliver back in one piece.

â sorry can't save me now. i'm not okay i feel so scattered â
DANIELLE knew that Cory worried about her, within good reason. Ever since he had died the first time, ever since losing Oliver, ever since becoming a vampire, she hadn't ever been the same. Hell, she didn't think that she would ever be the same again. With everything that had happened in her life, the old Danielle was long gone. The pain and suffering she had endured was enough for any ordinary person to go through in their lifetime - and she had gone through it in a matter of a couple years. Back to back to back traumas couldn't be healthy. She knew it wasn't and it definitely was taking a tole on her mental health, more so than she had ever originally anticipated it would. And with being a vampire, any and all feelings she felt, were increased tenfold. Everything she felt was cranked up times a thousand and at times it truly become unbearable.
She felt lost, like she would never truly find what she was looking for. Would she? Would she ever find Oliver? Or would she always be in a constant state of unknowing? Was sadness and misunderstandings her future? Would she ever find peace? The answer wasn't what she wanted to hear, it was too disheartening to bare. The good things in her life flowed through her twin brother and her work partner, Luke. Brooke was nowhere to be found and she hated her guts, within good reason. She had, after all, kept the most important secret she would have ever kept from someone she had considered to be her sister. That was a secret that had become known and she knew deep down that Brooke would never forgive her for it. How could she?
Nevertheless, this meeting with an acquaintance of Cory's seemed to be leading somewhere, at least she hoped it would. But Danielle knew better than to get her hopes up, because everything thus far had lead to dead ends after dead ends. No leads she had followed ever led anywhere, which made her fear the worst. That Oliver couldn't be found because he wasn't alive. She knew she couldn't think like that, but after so many things going wrong in her life, it was difficult to not think so damn pessimistically. Danielle was a pessimist, a realist if you will, by heart and that certainly wasn't going to change anytime soon.
Danielle listened to Cory speak to the other reaper, mentioning how they knew the demon had taken Oliver for a reason, they just didn't know what that reason was. Still to this day she hadn't figured that out. But she had a feeling this reaper in front of them wouldn't be so keen as to grant them the favor they so desperately needed. Instead of addressing Cory, the reaper addressed her, his icy-blue eyes trained on her. 'There are plenty of demons in town you could try talking to and he knows it. Theyâre not gonna leave just from you asking nicely. You know the thing in your husband wonât either, right? Thatâs not the way those things work honey.' Danielle listened intently and she looked up at Cory as the reaper mentioned how Cory knew some demons in town who could give them some information. Her brother knew that the entire time and didn't bothering mentioning that? If she would have known that she would've approached the demonic bastards her damn self.
Getting a demon to talk wouldn't be an issue. She had interrogated plenty of demons, knew what hurt them, knew the things and tricks to trap them. One thing Danielle was good at was doing her research and that was exactly what she had done after Oliver had went missing. Lots and lots of research and she planned on using what she had learned to the fullest extent. "Trust me, I've made plenty of demons talk. That won't be an issue. Where are they? Any particular demon-friendly hangout?" She said, her tone cold and distant. Danielle knew what her next steps were, find some demons in town and make them talk, see if they knew anything at all about the demon who was possessing Oliver. And if they didn't give her the information she needed? Well, let's just say that they would be getting a one-way ticket right back to where they came from - Hell.

Hope was dangerous and part of him wondered if giving it to Dani had been a good move. Cory had heard the snap in her voice as sheâd started to question Damien and had winced inwardly. The other reapers werenât like him. They hadnât come to this through some real made in a desperate moment, they werenât shells used to house reapers, they were Deathâs direct employees. He guessed some had been plucked out of the millions who died every day, little pawns moved into position when a reaper was ⌠the shudder rolled through Cory hard enough that he tugged his sleeves down over his hands, trying to block the cold that froze the marrow of his bones. They were replacements. Some asked for it, intrigued by the idea, or desperate in their own way. Like Leah. Thank God she hadnât been the one heâd come to.
Heat tried to chase the cold away at that thought. Leah wouldnât have looked at Dani with that cold aloofness. Some keen edge wouldâve snapped into her eyes, a smile that probably didnât go much more than surface deep stretching out as heâd introduced his sister. Maybe sheâd have had wider contacts, she absolutely wouldâve broken more rules to help out, but Leah had proven that was more than a little dangerous when sheâd conned him into helping her out of the other side in the first place.
Cory knew he was wading out into dark waters as it was as offered up a favour to Damien. He didnât know his fellow reaper well enough to know if heâd take that favour and choke him with it the way Leah would. Light eyes studied the sitting man from beneath his lashes, darting sideways to Dani as his plea was met with a vague dismissal from Damien. No, not yet. He could see the chance heâd led Dani to believe was there drifting away like smoke on the air.
It was gonna be obvious to Damien that they were desperate but the other reaper didnât latch onto it gleefully the way he mightâve done. He turned his attention to Dani instead. Was that gonna be where the other shoe was gonna drop here? Yep. Coryâs mouth fell open, his head ticking back and forth. âI donât, not that way.â He almost pled with his sister to believe that but Dani was always going to take his word over some po faced stranger. Sweaty fingers squeezed Danielleâs, the pit of his stomach squirming. This seemed like it had been the worst idea now, instead of Damien helping he was just going to tangle the pair of them up and leave any hope Danielle had shredded.
Damien sighed as the questions were tossed back. He lifted a hand, knuckled his mouth. Cory could see him losing his cool. No, no no, it wasnât meant to go this way. Damien dropped his elbow back to the bar, beginning to twist like he was turning away from them. âGood for you, honey. You think thereâs some bar like this with âdemon club houseâ written over the door? Theyâre everywhere.â Grumbling under his breath, Damien did twist around, eyeing the bartender as he took the fresh glass. âTry here tomorrow night. You find somewhere desperate people end up and you can probably find yourself someone with their ear pressed hard enough to the ground to find out whatâs going on. That all?â He didnât bother turning back around as he asked, his dismissal there in the stiffness of his shoulders.
Taking a half step back, Cory tugged at Danielleâs hand, trying to ease her out of here now. Maybe there were demons hanging around here but he wasnât ready to shove through the crowd trying to find them now. There were things that hung out here that could do more damage, the sort that neither one of them would get up from. âThatâs it, right, Dani?â The anxious edge cut through his voice. âWe can come back and look. Work out who to speak to. We should get back, start planning, huh?â The smile he tried for his sister was a little shaky around the edges. There was a chill in Damien, expected, but the one he was hearing in Daniâs voice now had him worried for her. He had to protect her from herself just as much as he had to protect her from whatever had taken over Oliver.

DANIELLE didn't trust this other reaper one damn bit. He seemed shady as hell and reluctant to give her any bit of information. If he even knew any damn thing to begin with. It was highly likely the guy was just bullshitting the two of them to get them to go away sooner, but if that were the case he would have another thing coming. Danielle was not in the mood to be played. All she needed was some direction, a pathway to more information on Oliver. Of course, like everything in her life she didn't think this would exactly go as planned either. Not to mention the fact that she didn't trust anyone outside of those she cared for and she especially did not trust some reaper guy in a bar that she had just met, even if it were through her twin brother. This entire place, the guy, was shady as hell and she didn't like it one damn bit.
Sure, the two were desperate for information, for answers. Her more so than Cory, but nonetheless, they needed to walk out of there with something. If they left empty handed it was likely she would lose it completely and with the amount of heartbeats around there... it was likely one of them would end up being her dinner. And that was saying a lot considering she only drank from blood bags and nothing more. Danielle could tell Cory was nervous by his movements, by the way his eyes shifted to her every so often, by the way he squeezed her hand in completely and utter reassurance. It was more so to ground himself than anything and honestly, she welcomed it. It made her feel grounded just being beside her twin, having her hand in his, the two could take on whatever came their way.
Of course, her questions seemed to annoy the hell out of the reaper. All she was met with was sarcasm and complete annoyance of this entire situation. Like he wanted the two of them to scram and be done with this. Well, she wasn't one to take no for an answer, especially when it involved Oliver. But Danielle listened earnestly, and before she could snap back at him, he told the two of them to check here tomorrow night and see what showed up. It wasn't much, but it was definitely a start. The reaper didn't bother to turn around to face them as he asked if that were all, rather rhetorically she may add. His question didn't bother a response and Danielle took a few steps backwards just as Cory did, tugging at her hand to get the two of them out of there as quickly as possible.
'We can come back and look. Work out who to speak to. We should get back, start planning, huh?' Anxiety was laced in her brother's tone, almost begging her to leave, that the two of them could start back tomorrow, come back when they had a plan. Danielle nodded, giving in to her brother's request even though every fiber of her being wanted to get this over with right then and there and not waste another second of this, but she knew her brother's ques when he wanted to leave places and this was definitely one of them.
"Yeah, let's go. Better to go into this prepared than not." She stated plainly, squeezing her brother's hand reassuringly as the two of them walked out of the bar. Danielle did not really want to involve her brother in any of her mess, but she knew how determined her brother got when it came to her and her safety, but she was the exact same with him. So if it came down to it, she would leave him behind to protect him as all she wanted was him to be safe and out of harm's way. She wouldn't be able to forgive herself if something else happened to her brother, especially when she had just gotten him back in her life again.

Shifting uneasily on his feet, Cory had to fight the urge to use their joined hands to just drag Danielle away from the club. The place was trouble in and of itself but heâd hoped that if another reaper was there the shudders that worked their way down his spine here were gonna be worth it. Damien didnât seem like he was gonna make it worth it though. The other reaper was cold, aloof, completely unbothered by the desperation that had to be rolling off of both him and Dani here. Was this what they all ended up like after long enough?
Shit. He hadnât told Dani much about what it was he did. The broad details had tumbled out on a wave of nerves the night that sheâd found him out on Wickery Bridge. He hadnât wanted to taint their reunion, the fact that sheâd been turned into a vampire and that heâd agreed to work for the big man himself to reap souls had seemed like enough. All those nightmarish details of what he did day in, day out stayed locked up in his throat . Dani had seen enough as a cop and an agent, it wasnât fair to burden her with more. Sheâd always been his rock and he wasnât about to grind her down to dust. It was time he was hers too, even if the waters of the world were lashing at them like an angry sea.
His hand clutched around Daniâs as they were practically dismissed by Damien. Cory had half expected her to argue. A snap of Daniâs usually steady voice as she threw herself at Damien to drag the answers out of him â that wouldâve had those waves crashing over the two of them, dragging them down into the sort of trouble you didnât always escape â but it didnât come. âT-thanks,â Cory stuttered out, his breath escaping the clog in his throat as Damien turned back to the bar and a fresh wave of the crowd began to creep in between them and the bar. Daniâs nod was a reassurance. It left Cory nodding, hunching his shoulders in to try and slip through the crowd without being the sort of hulking target people ended up bouncing off of.
The fresh air outside was a cool slap that steadied him. Cory darted one last glance back at the bouncer who sat at the door. That sort of guy wouldâve had him quaking in his boots once, now he couldâve blinked him out of existence with a single tap of a finger on his shoulder but he never wouldâve had the balls to do it. He glanced sideways at Dani, his mouth curling up into a half smile. âRight, weâll put together a plan. You know I was always good with that stuff.â Lists of pros and cons, little tick boxes for what was needed crowded onto the pages of the dollar store notebooks heâd fil almost weekly. Sketches, wishes, plans for a future he wasnât sure either of them were gonna get with the way their rickety floor of their lives had disappeared out from under their feet with the bark of a bullet. He could pull them all out again, spider diagram his way through every possible connection he or Augustus could pull together for this.
Cory tugged Daniâs hand again as they reached the alleyway that ran along the back of the club. It was dark, dank, the lingering scent of full dumpsters leaving his nose wrinkling as he stepped into it but it offered the best sort of cover to get them out of here without having to walk halfway across town. He tugged his sister to a stop, bringing his other hand up to her cheek. Cory grinned at her, finally an expression that didnât seem to tremble at the edges. âWeâve got a chance with this at least. Tomorrow we can stay here all night, question practically everyone who walks through the door. Weâre gonna find someone who knows where he is and weâre gonna get him back. Cross my heart.â He dropped his hand from his sisterâs cheek to her shoulder and then pulled her into a hug. âWeâll bring Oliver home, Dani.â A whispered promise in her as they vanished again, heading back to what passed for home in this town.
