━ i will be the light for you in the dark. ━ Ethan's days have been going rather well, his job was still as busy as ever but it wasn't bad, and it certainly wasn't something that he can't handle. There were a few instances where he got a little too reckless at work by jumping head-first into danger to save the lives of the innocent but could you blame him? His Captain certainly wasn't happy with him for it, but that wasn't something that's considered new. Ethan was currently chilling in the bedroom, watching some nameless movie that he randomly clicked on to pass the time where he was waiting for his coffee to brew and when it did, he got up and poured it into his mug and with his mug safely secured in his hand, he made his way back to his couch and that's how he spent his morning until Elias came home from school and asked for his help with something. "I'm so glad you guys don't have Maths at your school or else I wouldn't have been able to help." Ethan said with a chuckle falling from his lips as he made his way after his son and upon entering his room, his curiosity began to peak.
"Okay, so what is it that you need my help with, again?" Ethan questioned with a tilt of his head following, his eyes relaxed on Elias. When he learned what it was that Elias needed to do, his brows shot up almost to his hairline. "That sounds... really dangerous." Ethan blinked a few times, blue concerned eyes relaxing on his son. "Do we really need to cut your palm? Can't I just prick your thumb or something?" Ethan knew the answer to that even before finishing his question. He sighed and crossed his arms in front of his chest as he looked at the paper that Elias needed to do. It was about his family tree and with his blood, he'd be able to fill it out perfectly without any mistakes. But it also needed someone else to do it for Elias so the results aren't screwed up, so that leaves it all on Ethan. His eyes relaxed on Elias, watching him nervously for a few seconds. "Are you sure you wanna know, kiddo? It won't show if they're alive or dead, will it?" Because he just didn't want Elias to get sad or start missing his parents when they weren't in the picture to begin with. He just wanted to look out for Elias because this young boy had suffered enough already. Had lost enough already.

Elias had learned pretty quickly after he transferred to the Salvatore School that it was different to the way that Mystic Falls High had been and that had made him a little nervous at first but he had soon found where he fit in. Getting used to the different classes took a bit of time, after all they had to take all of the usual classes he’d had at Mystic Falls High along with other supernatural ones, but his teachers were patient with him and his dads helped him as much as they could and for that he was truly grateful. The decision had been made that he would repeat his junior year so that he could catch up to where the others were and he hadn’t known how to feel about that at first but now he knew that it was the right decision. Just the thought of graduating at the end of the school year when there was still so much about himself that he didn’t know had made him nervous so in a way he knew that it was a good thing that he didn’t have to worry about that. That day Mr Mikaelson had approached him after one of his classes, he’d been assigned a task to create a family tree and write a report about one of his family members and the guy had known that he knew very little about his biological family so he had given him something to help. The spell needed some of Elias’ blood to work but it would help him figure out who he really was and that was a little scary to say the least. After returning home from school he told Ethan that he needed help with something and as he said he was glad they didn’t have to do Math, Elias couldn’t help but laugh. “Actually we do but don’t worry, dad has us covered for that,” he chuckled. They were both good at different subjects and that definitely made things a lot easier. “It’s a family tree project. We’re meant to trace our family tree back as far as we can and write a report about a family member. There’s a spell we can use for it but it requires blood and I can’t do it myself or it might affect the results,” he explained, hoping that Ethan would agree to help him. As he asked if he could just prick his thumb or something instead, Elias shook his head. “It needs more blood than that to work,” he said even though he was pretty sure that Ethan already knew that before hesitating as he asked if he was sure he wanted to know. “I’m not sure but I don’t think I can do this any other way. I know I have all of you now and I don’t want you to think that this is me wanting to find a way to leave you all behind because it isn’t that at all, I just don’t know anything about my biological family other than what your Captain told me about me being abandoned at the firehouse and my mom’s body being found. Social services tried to track down any family I might have years ago but they didn’t find any,” he sighed. “You guys are my family but when Mr Mikaelson gave it to me it was like he knew something that I didn’t. He said that this could help me so I think I have to do this,” he said even though he was nervous about what he might find. “Will you help me?” he asked as he finished setting everything out on his desk and held the knife out to Ethan. ━ i will be the light for you in the dark. ━ Actually we do but don’t worry, dad has us covered for that, It’s a family tree project. We’re meant to trace our family tree back as far as we can and write a report about a family member. There’s a spell we can use for it but it requires blood and I can’t do it myself or it might affect the results,
Ethan's eyes widened slightly when Elias revealed that they do have Math but thankfully Toni helps him out with it. "Every day I just fall in love with Toni even more, I swear." Ethan said with a soft chuckle following. He was quiet as he listened to the younger, nodding his head a few times in an understanding manner. But that didn't erase the fact that he was definitely worried about Elias finding something that would wind up making him feel bad. "Okay, kiddo."
It needs more blood than that to work, I’m not sure but I don’t think I can do this any other way. I know I have all of you now and I don’t want you to think that this is me wanting to find a way to leave you all behind because it isn’t that at all, I just don’t know anything about my biological family other than what your Captain told me about me being abandoned at the firehouse and my mom’s body being found. Social services tried to track down any family I might have years ago but they didn’t find any,
Ethan released a small sigh, almost sounding disappointed to hear that it would need more blood than that. He just didn't want the younger to get hurt even though he knew that the younger would be able to heal just fine, so there was no need for him to worry about the younger but still, he couldn't help it. "Okay." He said with a nod of his head following, letting the younger know that he wasn't going to protest about the whole thing for long. If the spell needed more blood to work, then that's what they were going to do. "Oh no, kiddo. I didn't think of it that way, don't worry. I just don't want you to get upset, that's all." He said with a gentle smile resting on his lips. "Yeah, I did keep in touch with social services to try and find out anything but it's always a dead end for some reason. It's like your dad disappeared completely, I'm really sorry." But maybe with this project, they'll be able to know that guy's name and it will make tracking him down a lot easier.
You guys are my family but when Mr Mikaelson gave it to me it was like he knew something that I didn’t. He said that this could help me so I think I have to do this, Will you help me?
Ethan nodded his head a few times in an understanding manner. "Of course, kiddo. You deserve to know answers, as well." He said in a reassuring voice and looked down at the knife that was held out for him to take. He took a deep breath before releasing it. "Still doesn't mean that I like this step, though." Ethan breathed out with a small frown tugging at the corner of his lips. "But okay. I will help you." He reached over and took the knife from Elias' hold before he opened the palm of his hand, waiting for Elias to put his hand on top of his own. "It's gonna hurt, okay?" He warned, blue concerned eyes settling on Elias. "You ready?" Once he was given the confirmation that the younger was ready, he created a cut across the palm of his hand, grimacing the whole time because he really didn't like the idea that he was hurting his son like this. He moved the knife away, his eyes focusing on Elias to see what he was going to do next.

“Lucky for us you each have your own skills,” Elias chuckled. Before he’d always had to try and figure everything out on his own but having his dads on hand to help definitely came in handy and he was grateful to them for that. He had felt a little nervous about asking Ethan to help with the project he had been given, he had thought about asking Ela or Eli since he knew that it would have been a little less awkward than asking either of his parents to help him with a project that would trace his family tree but he’d known that he couldn’t put it off any longer and Ethan had agreed to help him so he knew that he just had to hope that it would work out. “Thank you,” he said sincerely as Ethan agreed to help him. Elias would be lying if he said that he wasn’t nervous about this, he knew that his mom had died when he was just a baby and he had no idea what had happened to his dad, but at the same time he needed answers. For such a long time he had felt like he was never going to find his place in the world and that he was never going to feel wanted but he had found just that with his dads and sisters and with his extended family as well. For the first time in his life things were going right and deep down he knew that now was as good a time as any to find out about the rest of his biological family while he had this one around him. A part of him had worried that Ethan would think that this was his way of trying to find a way out but it wasn’t that at all and he couldn’t help but feel relieved at Ethan’s next words. “I’m glad because this is where I want to be,” he admitted. It had been that way even when he had just visited them before they took him in, their house was the only place where he had ever truly felt safe and he knew that he wasn’t ready to leave that or any of them. “I don’t think I’ll get upset, I’m pretty sure any other family I have died a long time ago but at least this way I’ll be able to find out who they were,” he shrugged. As Ethan said that he’d kept in touch with social services, Elias’ eyes widened. “You did?” he asked, not having known that before. “That’s ok, I overheard a social worker saying the same thing a long time ago,” he shrugged. For a while they’d tried to make him hold on to hope that they would find his family but he had overheard what they really thought when they believed he was asleep or wasn’t listening so he had come to terms with it years before. As Ethan said that he deserved answers before saying that he wasn’t going to like the step of drawing blood, Elias felt a weak smile form on his face. “Trust me, I’m not keen on this part either,” he admitted as he handed the knife over. As Ethan held out his hand, Elias placed his own palm up on top of Ethan’s and nodded as he said it was going to hurt and asked if he was ready. “I’m ready,” he confirmed. He knew that the pain was coming but that didn’t stop him from wincing as the blade sliced across his palm and he automatically curled his hand into a fist, doing his best to block out the pain as they followed the instructions together. Mixing his blood in with the solution he had been given, Elias poured it all onto the page and watched as a tree began to form. In the middle was his name and his mother’s appeared next. “That’s my mom, May Granger,” he said although he was a little confused by what appeared under it – Formerly May Rickman. Underneath her name came her title of his biological mother along with her date of birth and date of death and linked to her two more names appeared – Alvin Silvera, his assumed father, and Michael Rickman, his mom’s husband – both of whom were dead. Neither of them were listed as his biological father, though, and Elias frowned as he watched more names start to appear going back even further. He had noticed Ethan and Antonio’s names show up along with those of the girls and he hadn’t thought anything of it but as he was looking over their names it was then that something caught his eye. There was a line between Ethan’s name and his mom’s, one that Elias hadn’t noticed before, and his breath caught in his throat as he read the label underneath Ethan’s name. He was listed as both his biological and adoptive father while Antonio was listed as both his step and adoptive father. “This can’t be right,” he breathed, shock evident on his face as he looked over at Ethan. “This says that you’re my biological father,” he said, needing to say the words out loud despite how absurd they sounded and despite the fact that Ethan could read it for himself. “Something must have gone wrong, maybe we should try it again,” he said, trying to rationalise it all in his head even as he reached to gather up the paper and throw it away. Ethan chuckled and nodded his head in agreement with the younger. "Yeah, exactly." He said with a half-smile resting on his lips. The reassurance that the younger gave was all that he needed to push past this and focus on helping the younger boy find out more about his family. "Okay." He deserved to know the truth, not just a half of it. "You're right. It's your right to know about your family and who they were." He had the privilege of growing up with a family and he knew all of them by name, but not the same could be said about Elias. He nodded his head at the younger's question that seemed to seek his confirmation. "Yeah, kiddo. I did." He was just trying to find a way to help but it wasn't easy, not when his father had seemed to disappear without any trace behind him. "Oh." He frowned slightly when the younger admitted that he'd overheard a social worker saying the same thing. "I'm sorry." He said in a soft voice, eyes relaxing on the younger once again.
Trust me, I’m not keen on this part either, I’m ready, That’s my mom, May Granger, This can’t be right, This says that you’re my biological father, Something must have gone wrong, maybe we should try it again,
"Yeah, I wish there was an easier way to do that part but unfortunately, there isn't." He breathed out with a disappointed sigh leaving from his lips because he really didn't want to hurt his son but the faster they got it over with, the faster his son will heal from the wound. He gave him an apologetic look when Elias winced at the pain and soon enough, his blood was dripping and was soon mixed with the solution that Elias was given. He whispered a soft 'wow' when the blood began to form a family tree once Elias had poured it on the paper. He watched with eyes filled with fascination as names began to appear and he looked closer to see the names. There it was, his mom's name and that's how he knew that this spell wasn't a hoax but it was actually working. Though his fascination seemed to fade when he saw that May Granger had a former name and it was one that Ethan recognized. "Rickman..." He breathed out. "I knew someone with that name." She wasn't just someone to him. She was once his girlfriend. He brushed it aside for now and focused instead on learning what Elias' father was called. He just needed to know. He needed to know why he left, too. What excuse could that asshole have, really?
"There I am━" He pointed but stopped when he realized something. He wasn't just listed as his adoptive father, but his birth father, too. His heart seemed to drop to the pit of his stomach. "That's..." Ethan's eyes moved to May's name, quickly doing the math in his head and everything seemed to check. "I'm..." Ethan couldn't find the proper words to express how he was feeling right now. "No... it's right." Ethan shook his head, his eyes moving to settle on Elias again who looked shocked by this new information and he didn't blame him in the slightest. "It's right, Eli... I was... dating your mom for a while. She was going by May Rickman back then. I... didn't know, Eli." Ethan was shocked to say the least. "I didn't know she was pregnant when we broke up..."

Elias hadn’t known how to feel about the project when it had been assigned to his class. He knew nothing about his biological family other than his mother’s name and the fact that she had died from an overdose while he was just a baby and after that he had been left outside a firehouse. He had learned recently that it was the firehouse in Mystic Falls that he had been left outside of and in a way it felt like he had come full circle. He didn’t know why his dad had abandoned him or what had happened to the rest of the family and it seemed that no one else did either. The social workers had done their best to track down any family that he had left so that he could be sent to live with them if they wanted him but they hadn’t been able to find any and Elias had come to terms with that a long time ago. He had learned pretty quickly that he wasn’t meant to find a family and it had stayed that way for a long time until Antonio and Ethan had taken him in. It was only meant to be a temporary arrangement but living with them was the only time that he had ever felt truly happy and he had jumped at the chance to be adopted by them when they’d asked him. They were his family, the one that he had chosen and the one that had chosen him, and they were all that he needed but a part of him still needed to know about his past especially now that he knew that he wasn’t human after all. As Ethan said that it was his right to know about his family and who they were, Elias found himself nodding. “I’ve always had questions about who my parents were especially now I know that at least one of them wasn’t human and this might give me the chance to find out,” he admitted. He wasn’t sure how much information he would be able to find out but it was the best chance that he had. “It doesn’t change the fact that my dad didn’t want me after my mom died though,” he added. The man had cleared out the apartment that had been their family home for the start of Elias’ life and abandoned him outside the firehouse in Mystic Falls. That much at least Elias had been able to gather from snippets of conversations that he’d overheard over the years and it had left him with no desire to track the man down but now he at least wanted to know where he had come from. “Thank you,” he said sincerely as Ethan confirmed that he had tried to speak to the social workers and find out what had happened to his family. “You and dad have done so much for me.” They had taken him in when there literally wasn’t anywhere else for him to go and they had given him the kind of family that he had always wanted so he knew that he was always going to be grateful to them for that. As Ethan said that he was sorry, Elias shook his head. “It’s ok, they only confirmed what I’d always thought anyway,” he shrugged. He had known that he didn’t have any family out there and if he had then they hadn’t wanted him and he’d made his peace with that a long time ago. In a way he hoped that this project might help him get some closure and leave the past behind him once and for all once he was finally able to figure out where he had come from. He knew that he could have tried doing this on his own but he hadn’t wanted to risk messing up the results so he was glad that Ethan had agreed to help him. “At least that will be the worst part of it done,” Elias said, trying to put a positive spin on it to try and stop himself from changing his mind. He had known that it was going to hurt but he still winced when the blade cut into his palm and he quickly got started on doing what he needed to in order to make the spell work as a way of distracting himself. Elias’ eyes took in each name in turn and as Ethan said that he knew someone with the name Rickman, Elias nodded. “I’ve met a couple of people with that name, I think there are a few of them around,” he admitted, not thinking too much of it until his gaze drifted to Ethan’s name and he saw the label that he had been given. Even as Ethan said that it was right, Elias shook his head in disbelief. “It can’t be,” he breathed, knowing that it had to be too much of a coincidence that one of the men that had adopted him was his biological father. Elias studied Ethan’s face carefully and he could see that the man was shocked but it was clear that he thought that it was right and that was enough to make Elias’ heart ache. “I believe you,” he said at last. “I know you wouldn’t have abandoned me, I just don’t understand how our paths could have crossed all these years later.” It could have been fate or something else he wasn’t sure but it all seemed too surreal right now. “It says that Alvin Silvera was my assumed father, maybe my mom didn’t know you were my father herself,” he offered, wondering if Alvin was the man that had abandoned him and set this all in motion.
