Before he was even born Luc's family were on the run - from the prosecution of the Huguenots in France, from the hunters who had slowly whittled down the number of dragons in the world over the centuries. Luc was born in Holland and grew up there, obsessed with the water and ships, until a hunter again found them and the family fled to save themselves. It only worked for a few years before their merchant ship was taken by pirates and Luc found himself a member of their merciless crew until slaughter came again. Not looking back Luc headed for America and merchant's ships of his own until he was again boarded and taken. A chance rescue by a woman with her own private army saw Luc joining Ingrid's people for a century. Torpedoing that connection himself he ended up walking out, spending the better part of a century trading arms across the world. Tired with it in the modern day and having had a serendipitous run in with members of Ingrid's current army, Luc has headed to Mystic Falls, hat in hand, to try and work his way back in with his former boss.
friends. As a human Johanna allowed herself such things. Her closest friend and confident growing up in Cambaluc was the boy she would come to see as her brother, in England her husband Kaegan and his best friend, Magnus wormed their way into her affections. After the Queen turned her and she was forced to leave the world she had come to know behind Johanna became more closed off. She will still allow people to grow so close to her but knowing she will inevitably move on Johanna does not seek out lasting entanglements. There is always too far to travel for that.
enemies. Burn and pillage your way across the high seas and you likely ruffle some feathers in the process. Even knowing there were already hunters on his family's trail Luc threw himself into the treacherous behaviour of the crew who slaughtered his family and took him in. Shifting allegiances might have drawn a line under that but private security and arms dealing aren't places you end up too well loved either.
family. Any family Luc had are long dead. His father - Jacques, mother - Adeline, and two older sisters - Giselle and Alianora were all on board their merchant ship when they were boarded by pirates. Despite being dragons themselves, Jacques and Giselle were cut down as quickly as Adeline and Alianora with the dragon blood forged blades held by the pirates. Neither of his sisters had been old enough to be married and mothers by then and in the years since Luc has made no efforts to do such a thing himself.
lovers. That has been all they have ever been to Luc. As a rakish young pirate he had one in every port, playing on charm and reputation to talk them into his bed. For decades he was in and out of his boss' bed but things with Ingrid never reached a point you could call a relationship before Luc's ultimatum torpedoed matters. In the years since he has returned to his old ways, taking women to bed for mutual fun but not sticking around for anything to approach seriousness.
