“So you’re kind of like the Cookie Monster only in reverse, got it,” Ria laughed, a teasing smile forming on her face before her expression fell slightly and she found herself studying him carefully for a moment. “I heard your use of the past tense there, what happened?” she asked, knowing that she wouldn’t be surprised if it wasn’t as bad as he thought. It was true that she hardly new Adam but from what she had seen of him so far he seemed like a really nice guy. Ria knew that looks could be deceiving but she didn’t get a bad feeling about Adam at all, in fact when she was with him she felt safe and that wasn’t something that she had thought that she would feel again for a long time after everything that had happened. She didn’t know anyone in Mystic Falls just yet but she felt like Adam could end up being a really good friend and she knew that she wanted to understand him better if she could. Ria knew that she needed to give those around her a chance but right now that was easier said than done. With Adam it seemed to come naturally, though, and for the first time in a while she didn’t feel alone. For a moment Ria saw Adam’s eyes widen and she quickly averted her gaze. Being a werecreature was still so new to her and she didn’t know much in the way of control at the moment but she knew that the last thing she wanted was for her new friend to think that she was some kind of a freak. Ria knew that all of the kids at the Salvatore School knew about the supernatural world so while she was there she wasn’t really any different from the rest of them unless they somehow found out the truth about what had happened to her. Outside of the school she had never told anyone what she was, though, because she hadn’t even known herself until she was dragged to Mystic Falls and the truth was that she didn’t know how to tell someone the truth. For all she knew Adam was just a regular guy, a regular human guy who didn’t know anything about the supernatural world and she knew that she couldn’t be the person who burst that bubble for him. As Adam spoke again his words were genuine and Ria wanted nothing more than to tell him the truth but her mom’s warnings rang in her ears and she knew that she couldn’t. Instead she felt a half smile form on her face as she looked up at him. “Not even if I told you that maybe you’re not the only monster around here?” she asked as she nudged his arm gently with her own, trying to keep her tone light enough that he would think that she was just joking given what she’d said before about him being like the Cookie Monster. The truth was that she wasn’t sure how to feel about the fact that she was a werecreature yet but she knew that she didn’t want to hurt anyone so she knew that it was important that she learned how to control herself. As he said that he would tell her more about him if she wanted him to, Ria’s smile turned genuine. “I’d like that,” she said sincerely. ADAM HAWTHORNE

━ heavy lies the head that wears the crown ━
So you’re kind of like the Cookie Monster only in reverse, got it, I heard your use of the past tense there, what happened?
Adam chuckled at Ria's words when she pointed out that he was like the Cookie Monster only in reverse which was the strangest comparison he'd ever heard and it only made him laugh harder. "Oh my god." Adam lifted his hand up to his eyes to wipe the tears away. Not long ago, he was crying out of sadness and now, he was crying out of joy. It was such a flip from how he was not long ago and he genuinely appreciated it. "I actually didn't even consider that but yeah, I'm kinda like the Cookie Monster only in reverse, so basically you're in the presence of a young God." Adam teased with a soft chuckle falling from his lips. He hesitantly rubbed the back of his head as Ria asked what had happened that pushed him to put his words in a past tense. "It's... nothing." He just wasn't sure he could tell her right away. He didn't want to risk spooking her.
Not even if I told you that maybe you’re not the only monster around here? I’d like that,
Adam felt a soft smile appear on his lips at Ria's words. The nudge that she gave him was more than enough to let him know she was talking about him being a Cookie Monster and not actually calling him a monster. "Is this... about your eyes?" Adam questioned, gesturing to Ria's eyes. "Uh, you kinda um... flashed your eyes for a second." Adam explained with a quick nod of his head following. "It's okay, Ria. Really. My friend is actually a werewolf, so this doesn't scare me. You don't have to protect me." Adam promised her with a gentle smile resting on his lips.
Not long after, Adam took a quick deep breath before he exhaled shakily. "You're... not the only one with a secret." Adam moved his hand out of his pocket to show the bolts of electricity traveling between his fingers before he looked over at Ria with a hesitant smile on his lips. "I've, uh, lost control a couple of times before and my neighbors they've heard about it. They think I'm not... totally stable up in here." Adam gestured to his head with a shaky chuckle leaving his lips. "Especially after my parents' separation but it's kinda been going on for longer than that. So yeah, um... I'm not really normal." He trusted her and it was exactly why he had decided to tell her about this.

Ria had only been joking when she'd said that Adam was like the Cookie Monster in reverse but it looked like her words had the desired effect. Adam seemed to find it funny and Ria found herself laughing along with him. It was strange to think that a few minutes ago Adam had been seeming quite down and now he was crying with laughter and Ria couldn't deny that she liked to see him like this so much more. As he said that she was in the presence of a young God, Ria couldn't help but laugh once more. "I had no idea. All hail the Cookie Monster God," she said, pretending to bow to him as she did so. "It's good to hear you laugh," she added, hoping that he might end up doing that more often. He was definitely cute when he laughed and for a moment he didn't look like he had the weight of the world on his shoulders and Ria had a feeling that it was something that he could do with happening more often. As Adam said it was nothing, Ria's expression softened. "You can talk to me, I swear I won't judge," she assured him, knowing that she really wasn't in any position to do so. Ria knew that there were others around town who were like her and there were others who had been aged up by the same spell but she hadn't talked to anyone about it yet because the truth was that she was still trying to get her head around it herself. She knew that she definitely wasn't in any position to judge though and she definitely wouldn't dream of doing that to Adam. Ria had wondered if she had said a little too much and her eyes went wide as Adam asked if she was referring to her eyes. For a moment she thought about denying it but then Adam said that he had a friend that was a werewolf and said she didn't have to protect him and she let out a breath she hadn't realised she was holding. "You really mean that, don't you?" she asked incredulously. She hadn't expected that at all. "You're actually the first person I've talked to about this outside my family, it's all still so new to me. I'm not a werewolf, I'm a werepanther. My dad is a werewolf and my mom is a kitsune, I think that's why I take after my dad in a way but not completely," she explained before feeling a sigh escape her lips. "That's only half the story though," she added. Adam didn't seem bothered at all by the fact that she was a werecreature but she wasn't sure how he would feel about knowing that she wasn't actually meant to be a teenager yet and only was one because of a spell or what had happened in the lead up to her arriving in Mystic Falls in the first place. As talk shifted to Adam Ria could tell that he was holding back but as he revealed his hands and she saw the electricity moving between his fingers it suddenly made sense. "I did wonder if that shock earlier came from you but I didn't want to ask," she admitted. "Maybe you're not normal but neither am I and for what it's worth I think being able to control electricity is actually pretty cool but I am sorry about your parents," she said sincerely before a thought occurred to her. "Is that what had you so upset earlier?"ADAM HAWTHORNE

━ heavy lies the head that wears the crown ━
I had no idea. All hail the Cookie Monster God, It's good to hear you laugh, You can talk to me, I swear I won't judge,
Adam chuckled at Ria's words before he puffed his chest in a manner that could be seen as faux cockiness. "Thank you, thank you. I'll have to gift you with a cookie box at some point. You're not like... allergic to anything that goes into cookies, right?" Adam questioned with his head tilted slightly to the side. Her next words were more than enough to make his cheeks tint a bit red as he scratched the back of his neck shyly. "Um. Thank you. I actually, um, can't remember when was the last time I laughed this hard, if I'm being honest." Adam admitted with a small smile resting on his lips. "Wait, that makes me sound like such an angsty teenager, I take it back." Adam said with a chuckle following as he shook his head at how angsty he sounded with that admittance. His gaze softened at Ria's words when she swore that she won't judge him. "I know you won't. You don't seem like the type." Adam said with a sincere smile resting on his lips. "And as cringey as this might sound, I feel like I've known you for such a long time, Ria. You're really sweet. I wish I had met you back when I was..." Adam trailed off, the words hanging heavily on his tongue. "Normal."
You really mean that, don't you? You're actually the first person I've talked to about this outside my family, it's all still so new to me. I'm not a werewolf, I'm a werepanther. My dad is a werewolf and my mom is a kitsune, I think that's why I take after my dad in a way but not completely, That's only half the story though,
Adam nodded his head a few times with a gentle smile resting on his lips. "I really do." He promised her in a soft voice. His eyes remained fixed on her as she explained that she was not a werewolf but a werepanther and the admittance made his eyes widen slightly but it wasn't something out of fear. It was more out of amazement because he hadn't expected to hear that. "Werepanther? That sounds so cool! I didn't think those existed." He said with the same amount of amazement locked on his expression. "Oh? What's the other half? If you don't mind me asking, that is. You don't have to tell me if you don't want to!"
I did wonder if that shock earlier came from you but I didn't want to ask, Maybe you're not normal but neither am I and for what it's worth I think being able to control electricity is actually pretty cool but I am sorry about your parents, Is that what had you so upset earlier?
"Yeah... m'sorry about that. I used to be good at controlling it. Used being the keyword here." Adam breathed out with a bitter chuckle falling from his lips as he looked down at his hands. Even after clenching his fist, the electricity didn't stop. That was the problem, wasn't it? He just can't stop it. His expression softened at Ria's words before his lips formed a genuine smile. "Thank you, Ria." Adam was very thankfully that he had bumped into Ria. She was helping him in a lot of ways already. "Yeah, it was a part of it." He didn't want to hide it from Ria. He wanted to be honest with someone and he knew that he wouldn't regret it if he told her.
"There was someone that I um... Really liked. She was so sweet, so gentle." Adam's voice got a little shaky as he talked about Viola, tears stinging in his eyes. "I didn't think that I was ever going to lose her but she's just... she's just gone, Ria. I didn't even get to s--say goodbye and now it feels like I'm never g-gonna see her again and it just hurts. It hurts and I don't know how to make it stop." Adam harshly wiped the tears away with the heel of his hand as he sniffed a few times before he shook his head. "M'sorry. I'm sorry. I didn't mean to shift the mood into something so depressing. M'sorry."

Ria had so many fake memories of having friends back home and even though she knew that the memories weren’t real it didn’t make her miss those people any less. Being kidnapped and dragged around different States while her captor tried to evade being caught was one thing but being aged up by a spell and turning into a panther for the first time on the night that she finally escaped made it that much more difficult to get her head around. Ria had tried talking to her parents about it but the truth was that she didn’t want to worry either of them right now. They had stuff of their own to figure out without her complicating matters any further. She and her mom had clashed at times but they’d always been able to talk about things in her fake memories at least. Now Ria longed to reach out to someone about everything that had happened but her mom had kept the fact that she even existed from her dad and while she had been spending time with her mom and getting to know her dad they had so much to figure out between them so for the time being at least this felt like something that she had to try and deal with on her own. Needless to say she ended up getting lost in her head quite often but Adam was proving to be a pretty good distraction for that. She hadn’t felt ready to let anyone at the Salvatore School get close to her just yet but with Adam it came so naturally and it felt good to be around him. “No, I’m not,” Ria laughed, glad that he had been happy to go along with the nickname she had given him rather than thinking that it was childish or silly. She couldn’t explain it but she felt a connection to Adam that she hadn’t felt in a long time and given how sad he had seemed when they first bumped into each other she had known that she’d wanted to do anything she could in order to cheer him up and it looked like she had managed that so she couldn’t deny that she was glad. “You look like you’ve had a lot going on lately so I’ll let you off,”she said, a smile touching her lips as she nudged his arm gently with her own. Nodding as Adam said that she didn’t seem like the type of person who would judge him, Adam’s next words were enough to have Ria smiling once more. “It doesn’t sound cringey because I feel exactly the same and personally I think normal is overrated,” she assured him. Things were complicated right now, that was for sure, but at the end of the day they were who they were and nothing was ever going to change that. Ria’s mom had warned her about the dangers of other people finding out what she was so she had always known that she would have to be careful about keeping that to herself but Adam didn’t seem to mind one bit and that was something that she hadn’t expected at all. “You’re pretty amazing, you know that?” she asked as he confirmed that he meant what he’d said. Most would have seen her eyes flash and probably thought that they were seeing things or if they had known what it meant then she imagined that they probably would have wanted to keep their distance considering that she wasn’t entirely sure how to control herself yet but Adam didn’t seem bothered. “I didn’t until I turned into one either. I’ve just started at the Salvatore School and apparently there are lots of different animals that people can turn into,” she explained. How it all worked she had no idea but she had always liked panthers so she knew that it could be a lot worse. As Adam asked what the other half of the story was, Ria hesitated before shaking her head as Adam told her that she didn’t have to tell him if she didn’t want to. “No, it’s ok. I feel like I can trust you, I just hope it doesn’t make you look at me any differently when you know,” she said before letting out a shaky breath. “I’m not really meant to look like this, not a teenager I mean,” she began, mentally kicking herself for how bad she was at explaining already. “My mom works for the FBI and I was three when a protégé of one of the men she put away decided that the best way to get back at her was by kidnapping me. I was dragged to so many different places and held prisoner until we got here. I don’t know exactly what happened but apparently a spell backfired and still hangs over this town because not long after I was brought here the spell turned me into a teenager and rewrote my whole life. I have fake memories of growing up, going to school and having friends before I was taken around my sixteenth birthday but none of them are real. I only found out when my dad showed up at the station after I escaped – he didn’t even know I existed before that,” she explained, her eyes searching Adam’s as her voice trailed off before she quickly looked away. “Sorry, I know that’s a lot to dump on you when we’ve only just met and I won’t blame you if you think I’m a freak.” She hoped that he wouldn’t but she knew that she would completely understand if he did because she felt that way sometimes herself right now. As Adam apologised for shocking her earlier, Ria shook her head. “You don’t need to apologise, I know it wasn’t on purpose,” she assured him gently, letting her hand rest lightly on his arm as he seemed to realise that it wasn’t stopping. Something was clearly bothering Adam and if his ability was tied to his emotions like hers seemed to be then Ria could definitely understand why he was struggling to stay in control right now. “You’re welcome,” Ria said, a smile forming on her face as she looked up at Adam. As he said that his parents were a part of the reason why he was upset earlier, she found herself studying him carefully. Soon enough he was opening up to her and seeing how upset Adam was was enough to make Ria’s heart ache for him. Without even thinking about it she stepped forward and wrapped her arms around him, hugging him tightly. “You have nothing to apologise for,” she promised him. “I’m really sorry, no one ever deserves to go through that,” she said gently. “I know it doesn’t feel like it right now but it will get easier. You’ll never forget about her but you’ll never truly lose her either. Sometimes we can’t see the people we care about but we always carry them with us no matter what,” she said, hoping that he would believe her. That was something that she had learned the hard way after she was taken away from her mom but she wouldn’t wish that kind of pain on anyone. ADAM HAWTHORNE

━ heavy lies the head that wears the crown ━
No, I’m not, You look like you’ve had a lot going on lately so I’ll let you off, It doesn’t sound cringey because I feel exactly the same and personally I think normal is overrated,
Adam nodded his head a few times at Ria's words when she told him that she wasn't allergic to anything that people normally put in cookies. "Okay good! I'll make you some cookies then." Adam said with a smile on his lips. Usually his mom always did those and he was always the one to send them around the neighborhood but with his parents' separation, he knew that he'll have to make them himself. He chuckled when Ria told him that she'll let him off because he looked like he had a lot on his plate. He returned the nudge with a grin resting on his lips. "Thanks." He said with a gentle smile resting on his lips. His expression softened when Ria told him that normal was overrated before he nodded his head a few times in agreement. "I don't wanna sound like a broken record, but thank you, Ria. Really." It was like she knew exactly what he wanted to hear and it honestly made him feel so ... understood.
You’re pretty amazing, you know that? I didn’t until I turned into one either. I’ve just started at the Salvatore School and apparently there are lots of different animals that people can turn into,
Adam's expression softened when Ria called him pretty amazing. He can't remember when was the last time anyone had ever done that to him. "I think that should be my line, Ria. You're really, really amazing." He can't remember when was the last time he'd gotten this lucky with meeting someone as amazing as Ria. "Oh, the Salvatore School. I've heard about that a few times. Isn't that the school for the gifted? It's actually pretty cool that they're making a school for supernatural kids." Adam said with a gentle smile resting on his lips. He thought about going there, but he's already a bit too old for that, wasn't he? He's already twenty years old. He wasn't sure where the time had gone but... He was grateful that he didn't have to worry about high school and the bullies there anymore. "I wonder if there's like... a were-cheetah or something. A were-puma? I feel like that should be a thing. A were-lynx? Okay sorry, I'm stopping. It's just... such a big variety. So many sizes." Adam said with a chuckle falling from his lips, wondering where his fascination even came from. He just couldn't help it. It sounded really cool to him.
No, it’s ok. I feel like I can trust you, I just hope it doesn’t make you look at me any differently when you know, I’m not really meant to look like this, not a teenager I mean, My mom works for the FBI and I was three when a protégé of one of the men she put away decided that the best way to get back at her was by kidnapping me. I only found out when my dad showed up at the station after I escaped – he didn’t even know I existed before that, Sorry, I know that’s a lot to dump on you when we’ve only just met and I won’t blame you if you think I’m a freak.
Adam was quiet as he listened to Ria, not wanting to interrupt her. He took in the new information as his eyes remained fixated on her, head tilted slightly to the side as he watched her with curiosity visible on his expression which soon shifted into something akin to sadness as he began to realize that her story was a lot sadder than he had expected and it made his heart ache for her. He watched her with so many emotions visible in his eyes which started from sympathy to anger to relief that she was no longer with that awful person to sadness all over again because her dad didn't even know she existed. "Oh my god..." Adam breathed out as he processed everything, his heart still feeling tight. "What? no, no! I don't think of you as a freak. If anything, I'm just so, so, so sorry that you had to go through that. You don't deserve to be put through so much heartache and pain, Ria. I'm so sorry."
You don’t need to apologise, I know it wasn’t on purpose. You’re welcome, You have nothing to apologise for. I’m really sorry, no one ever deserves to go through that, I know it doesn’t feel like it right now but it will get easier. You’ll never forget about her but you’ll never truly lose her either. Sometimes we can’t see the people we care about but we always carry them with us no matter what,
Adam nodded his head a few times because he knew that it wasn't on purpose but that's the worst part. He keeps hurting people without meaning to and he's just terrified that one day, he'll start hurting them on purpose. He's so scared of succumbing to that darkness that was lodged deep within him. He was so scared of losing himself entirely. He blinked out of his thoughts all thanks to Ria's touch, his eyes moved to settle upon her, lips stretching to form a gentle smile, grateful that she had brought him out of his thoughts before they could consume him whole. She really was helping him in more ways than one. As he revealed more and more about what was truly bothering him, he was surprised to feel Ria's arms wrap around him and it was clear that he was caught off guard from the way he let out a soft gasp but his hands soon made contact with his back, though the touch itself was a bit hesitant just because he didn't want to hurt her.
His tears continued streaming down his face like waterfalls, unable to stop himself. There was just so much bothering him and weighing him down. It pained him in so many ways and he can't remember when was the last time he had felt at ease. Wait, no. He can. He had felt at ease after talking to Ria. He even started laughing and smiling again because of her. She distracted him and it was everything that he needed, honestly. He nodded his head a few times as he sniffed once, careful not to ruin her shirt with his tears. "You're right. You're right. Thank you. It will get easier, it always does but it's just... the build-up to that point that always hurts the most. It's just... everything I do reminds me of her. I just don't understand why her? Why did she have to go a-and leave me behind? It should have been me. At least I... deserve it." In his eyes, he really did deserve it.

As Adam said that he would make her some cookies, Ria felt a smile form on her face. “Only if you agree to eat them with me,” she said, knowing that it would give them the chance to hang out again. This wasn’t something that she had seen coming when she had decided to take a look around town that day but it had definitely worked out a lot better than she had thought, that was for sure. She hardly knew Adam but he was already someone that she considered a friend. She could tell that he was a good person and he had been through something awful but he seemed like the kind of person who could get through just about anything with the right support and Ria knew that she wanted to be that person if Adam would let her. Ria had been through a lot lately as well and if she was honest she knew that it would do her good to focus on someone else. Far too often she ended up getting lost in her own head and she knew that wasn’t good for her so she wanted to change it if she could. As he thanked her, Ria felt a smile form on her face. “You have nothing to thank me for,” she assured him. “I like being around you and if that means telling you the truth when you need to hear it then I’ll do it,” she added. She felt comfortable around Adam and that was something that she hadn’t yet found during the time that she had been in Mystic Falls so she wanted to make the most of it while she could. She and Adam seemed to just get each other and she knew better than to take that for granted. Ria felt a smile touch her lips as Adam said that she was really amazing. “Sounds like we make a pretty good pair then,” she said, glad that after everything that had happened she could still find someone who could make her feel this happy. She knew that her memories of all of her friends back home were only fake but that didn’t make her miss them any less. She knew that she needed to give Mystic Falls and the Salvatore School a chance and now she knew that there were people like Adam around then she knew that she was going to make it work. She had wanted to stay in town so that she could be around her dad and now after meeting Adam she knew that she would find a place where she was able to fit in sooner or later despite the fact that her whole world had been turned upside down. “The official line is that it’s a school for the gifted but for those in the know it’s just a place where people who are different can learn to control their abilities safely,” she explained. “There’s a college now too which is pretty cool,” she added, not sure whether Adam had heard about that yet or not. As he spoke again, Ria couldn’t help but laugh. “I’m not sure about a were-cheetah or a were-lynx but I met a girl the other day who is a were-snow leopard and her twin sister turns into a regular leopard,” she shrugged. The truth was that Ria was still learning about all of this herself so she wasn’t entirely sure exactly what species there were out there but she was enjoying having the chance to find out. Spilling absolutely everything to Adam like that wasn’t something that Ria had planned on but once she started talking she couldn’t seem to stop and before she knew it she had told him everything. Her parents knew the truth and so did some of the people at the Salvatore School but she hadn’t really talked to anyone there about it yet – in fact she hadn’t really talked to anyone there at all yet. She hadn’t felt ready at first because it had all come as a bit of a shock but now she was ready to start letting people in so she knew that things were going to be different from now on. She would be lying if she said that she wasn’t worried that Adam would think of her as a freak now that he knew the truth but soon enough he was speaking and she felt her mind begin to ease a little. “Thank you, it means a lot to hear you say that,” she admitted. She still wouldn’t blame Adam if he was just saying that to be nice but he hadn’t given her any reason to doubt him so she knew that she just had to believe that he was telling her the truth. As it turned out she wasn’t the only one who ended up spilling everything since it wasn’t long before Adam was doing the same. Ria could tell that she had taken him by surprise by hugging him but it was something that she was pretty sure that he needed so she didn’t regret it one bit and soon enough his hands were resting against her back. “I know it does but even though it hurts right now, it won’t always be like this,” she assured him gently. As Adam said that it should have been him because he deserved it, Ria looked at him in surprise. “Adam, don’t ever say that,” she said fiercely. “I don’t know everything that you’ve been through but I know that you’re a good guy who doesn’t deserve to have to deal with any of this. Never think that it should have been you, the world would be a much darker place without you in it.”ADAM HAWTHORNE

━ heavy lies the head that wears the crown ━
Only if you agree to eat them with me, You have nothing to thank me for, I like being around you and if that means telling you the truth when you need to hear it then I’ll do it, Sounds like we make a pretty good pair then,
"Careful what you wish for. I might just gobble them down and leave you none," Adam said with a chuckle falling from his lips as he looked at Ria. "Jokes aside, I'd love to eat you." What? What? Adam's eyes widened slightly as he looked at Ria. "I mean eat them with you! Not like, you.. we ... I wouldn't... I.." Adam rubbed the back of his neck sheepishly as he bit down on his bottom lip to stop himself from talking. God, he sounded like an idiot. Why couldn't his mouth just cooperate with him for once without making things hard for him? He felt a soft smile appear on his lips when Ria said that they make a pretty good pair. "Yeah, we do. I definitely feel very, um, lucky right now." He said with a genuine smile resting on his lips.
The official line is that it’s a school for the gifted but for those in the know it’s just a place where people who are different can learn to control their abilities safely, There’s a college now too which is pretty cool, I’m not sure about a were-cheetah or a were-lynx but I met a girl the other day who is a were-snow leopard and her twin sister turns into a regular leopard,
Adam was quiet as he listened to Ria, head tilted slightly to the side. "That's actually really cool." He said with a soft 'wow' leaving his lips as he looked at Ria. "Do you think they'd be able to help me?" He wasn't exactly a werewolf or anything like that. But he did possess a few things that didn't make him an ordinary human. "A were-snow leopard? Oh my god, Ria. That sounds really cool too! But not as cool as a were-panther, if I'm being honest." Adam admitted with a soft smile resting on his lips. "This isn't a biased opinion by the way, I hope you know that."
Thank you, it means a lot to hear you say that, I know it does but even though it hurts right now, it won’t always be like this, Adam, don’t ever say that, I don’t know everything that you’ve been through but I know that you’re a good guy who doesn’t deserve to have to deal with any of this. Never think that it should have been you, the world would be a much darker place without you in it.
Adam felt a smile form on his lips appear on Adam's lips. "Of course. You just seem like a really sweet person and you didn't deserve all the things you've been through." Adam looked at her with an apologetic look on his face. She didn't deserve all the things she's been through. It was so unfair how the world operated sometimes. It made him feel like there's just no rhyme or reason to it. That it really didn't matter if you were a good person or a bad one, you were just always going to wind up getting hurt. Adam was a little taken-aback by Ria's fierce voice as he looked at her, eyes filled with tears still as he rubbed his eyes quickly to get rid of his those tears as he listened to Ria's words, her words catching him completely off-guard as his lips parted slowly. A much darker place without you in it. Adam felt his heart clench because it was everything he'd wanted to hear and more.
How could someone be so perfect?
"Thank you, Ria. Thank you." Adam breathed out shakily as he calmed himself down the best he could. "Crap, I must look like a mess right now, huh?" Adam said with a humorless chuckle following as he wiped his tears away quickly. "Thank you." He repeated once more, his eyes relaxing on Ria again and they gave away just how sincere he was being right now. He really just couldn't thank her enough for this. She was so ... sweet. "I'm really glad I met you." His words were sincere once again, his eyes still on Ria. "I really am. What you said really means a lot to me and I didn't know it was exactly what I needed to hear until you said it." He said with a small sad smile resting on his lips. "I'll try not to think that way again." He promised. He always had the worst view of himself and he just couldn't help it how his thought process went. "I'll stop crying now, I promise." Adam breathed out with a chuckle falling from his lips. "It's just... I keep telling myself that things will get better and I believe it every time then things happen and I'm back to realizing that life is just so... unfair sometimes."

“Somehow I doubt that,” Ria laughed as Adam said that he might just eat all of the cookies and not leave her with any. One thing she had learned about Adam was that he was the kind of person who put others before himself and he had a habit of being quite cute at times as well. As he spoke again, however, Ria’s eyes widened and she looked up at him in surprise. He had said the wrong thing before but that was something that she had never expected him to say and it was enough to leave her speechless even as her cheeks flushed red. “It’s ok, I know what you mean,” she said at last as she finally found her voice. She was still a little in shock but she knew that Adam hadn’t meant what he’d said so she knew better than to hold it against him and she also knew that she didn’t want it to make things awkward between them. Needless to say she was glad for the subject change and a smile formed on her face as Adam said that he felt very lucky right now. “So do I,” she admitted. She had known that sooner or later she would have to let others in but after everything that she had been through that was easier said than done right now. With Adam it felt so natural, though, and she was glad that they had bumped into each other that day. Ria knew that the whole point of the Salvatore School was to give them all a safe place to learn about what they were and how to stay in control and not letting the rest of the town know who they all really were was a big part of that but Adam was different. He knew about werewolves and he didn’t care that she wasn’t human. He was also different himself so she knew that she could trust him with it and she hoped that it might help him. Adam was seemingly thinking the same thing as it wasn’t long before he was asking if she thought they would be able to help her and she nodded. “I’m sure they would. There are lots of different people there with lots of different abilities, I’m sure someone would be able to help you,” she said gently. It was clear to her that Adam didn’t want to hurt anyone and it was the same for her. Those at the school were helping her learn control and she hoped that they would be able to do the same for him. Ria was about to say something after Adam said that a were snow leopard was cool but not as cool as a were panther but he beat her to it by saying it wasn’t a biased opinion and her smile returned. “I didn’t think it was, you don’t seem like that kind of person,” she said sincerely. He didn’t strike her as the kind of person who would tell anyone what they wanted to hear without really meaning it and that was pretty refreshing to say the least. “When I learn how to control it you can see my panther form, if you like,” she offered. She wasn’t sure how long it would take and she knew that she wouldn’t even consider it until she knew that there was no chance that she was going to hurt Adam but he seemed genuinely interested so she knew that he might just be someone that she could share it with. As Adam said that she didn’t deserve all the things that she’d been through, Ria’s smile returned and without even thinking about the possible shock she might get she reached for his hand and gave it a gentle squeeze. “Thank you, I could say the same for you,” she said gently. He had been through so much, they both had, but they were getting through it and something told her that it might just be a little easier if they stuck together and helped each other through it. “You don’t look like a mess, you look like someone who has been trying to be strong and has been bottling things up for a little too long,” she said, her eyes fixed on his as she spoke. That was something that she knew a lot about because it was something that she did too but she didn’t want that for Adam, she wanted him to know that he could talk to her whenever he wanted to or needed to. “I’m glad but I didn’t say it because I thought it was what you needed to hear, I meant every word,” she assured him. She wouldn’t have said it if she hadn’t and she hoped that he knew that. “I get it, I really do. Sometimes dark thoughts creep in even when we don’t want them to but if you ever feel that way again come and find me, you don’t have to go through this alone any longer,” she said, hoping that he would do just that. “You’re right, life is unfair but the truth is that it’s like that for a lot of people. I’ve been feeling that way a lot myself lately but now I know you’ve been feeling that way too and I know that we’re probably not the only ones by a long shot.”ADAM HAWTHORNE

━ heavy lies the head that wears the crown ━
Adam sheepishly rubbed the back of his neck at Ria’s words, immediately relieved that she understood what he meant. There was no denying the fact that his cheeks looked a little bit red out of shyness but at least Ria didn’t tease him about that which helped his blush ease away a lot sooner. It was a surprise that he hadn’t messed up a lot sooner, but it was probably because he was distracted by Ria. Talking to her was just so easy and he didn’t seem to really think about what he was going to say next, it was that easy.
”I really hope so.” Adam added a moment later with a quick nod of his head following. ”I guess I’m just tired of feeling like a freak, if I’m being honest.” Being surrounded by normal people certainly didn’t help them see him as anything else other than a freak of nature. A kid who makes lights flicker and looks like he’s about to cry at any given moment. ”So I have a feeling that being surrounded by supernatural people like me will definitely, uh, make me feel better.” Adam said with a quick nod of his head following as his lips gently stretched to form a soft smile. ”I’d really like that!” Adam excitedly said with a grin tugging at his lips. ”I mean…” Adam cleared his throat and pretended to be cool about it. ”Um. Yes. Yes, I would totally like to see your panther form. One day.” Adam quickly nodded his head a few times, looking quite happy right now and probably really excited, too.
Adam wasn’t so sure how he had gotten so lucky --- how did he manage to meet someone like this? Ria almost didn’t seem real, it really surprised him to his core. She knew everything that he needed to hear and said it with no complaints and with such a kind voice. It didn’t seem like she was saying this because she felt obligated to, but because she truly wanted to say those things. The last time that Adam had tried to be honest with someone about his troubles, he had a heart attack and that person was none other than his own father, so from there, he had been trying his hardest to keep his troubles hidden from his father until he exploded one day when he lost Viola. That day, he just couldn’t pretend to be okay.
Things back home weren’t doing too well and it definitely affected him way too much. Ria’s words made him feel so… at ease right now and it was definitely everything that he needed to hear. He felt a smile touch his lips as he wiped his tears away from his eyes with his hands before he nodded his head a few times. ”I’ll find you. I promise.” Adam promised because he definitely didn’t want to go through these moments alone. He could definitely use the comforting presence of an understanding person. A person who was kind and gentle and who else could that be other than Ria? ”Thank you.” Adam whispered in a soft voice, his voice definitely a lot more stable now unlike before when it was shaking a little too much for his words to even make any sense. ”For everything.” Adam added a moment later, his voice sincere.
Adam was quiet for a little bit of time, but his head definitely wasn’t quiet. One could almost hear the gears shifting in Adam’s head. ”Hey, Ria?” Adam finally spoke up, his eyes relaxing on Ria once again. ”I was wondering if you…” He trailed off as he looked around them momentarily. ”Okay, um… I know I kind of offered to show you around but I… Well..” Adam nervously licked his bottom lip as he struggled to get his words to make any sense. ”Do you maybe wanna… like… grab something to eat with me? As like…” Adam scratched the back of his neck nervously. ”A date?”

Ria had never found it that difficult to make friends, at her old school she was popular and she’d had a lot of people around that she could trust but back then she had at least been comfortable in her own skin. She’d been at the centre of her group of friends and she’d loved every minute of it but here she didn’t know anyone yet. Ria knew that that was her own doing, she hadn’t really gone out of her way to get to know anyone at the Salvatore School yet but the truth was that after everything that she had been through she hadn’t known if she was ready. She was still trying to come to terms with everything that had happened over the last year and considering that things were still awkward between her parents, right now she was trying to deal with all of it on her own. She knew that she should open up to her mom the way she always had done but the truth was that she didn’t want to add any more to the woman’s plate right now. She knew that keeping it all to herself wasn’t healthy and she kept on telling herself that eventually she would start feeling like herself again but if she was honest she was only now starting to really believe that and it was all thanks to Adam. He knew that she had been aged up by a spell and he knew some about what had happened to her but he didn’t look at her like she was a freak and that was what she had been worried about. He seemed to see her and who she was now, not just what had happened to her and that was all that she had wanted since she’d arrived in Mystic Falls. It was clear to Ria that Adam had been through probably more than she had and it helped having someone else to focus on for a while. He made her feel comfortable in a way that she hadn’t felt since she’d been kidnapped and she knew that she didn’t want that to come to an end any time soon. She’d felt a connection to people in the past but never like this and it was enough to take her by surprise but she couldn’t deny that she wanted to make the most of it while it lasted. “I can understand that, I’ve been feeling that way a lot lately too,” Ria admitted. She knew that she shouldn’t considering that she went to a school where every student was supernatural and there were other kids there that had been aged up by the same spell but it still wasn’t normal and she was still trying to get her head around it all. Her mom had told her about the supernatural world and had warned her that chances were she would take after one of her parents but she hadn’t known which one and she had thought that she’d have time to figure it out but it hadn’t worked out that way at all. “If you end up deciding to go to the school we can always be freaks together,” she offered, a smile touching her lips as she looked up at Adam. “I don’t think you’ll feel that way when you get there though, it’s a pretty cool place,” she added. She hadn’t come across anyone like Adam during her time there but then again she wasn’t entirely sure what he was and she wasn’t sure if he knew either so she hoped that in time he would find someone that he could relate to. His next words were enough to make her smile return although it quickly turned amused as he tried to downplay his initial excitement. “Looks like I have more of a reason to learn control if it’ll make you that happy,” she teased, shaking her head in amusement as they walked. As Adam promised to find her if he ever felt like this again, Ria’s smile turned gentle. “I’m going to hold you to that, you know,” she assured him, knowing that the last thing she wanted was for him to end up feeling like this again. “In fact I’ll do one better, do you have your phone on you?” she asked, intending on giving him her number if he did so that he could call her whenever he needed to. Hearing him thank her, Ria ran her hand gently down his arm. “You’re welcome,” she said sincerely, glad that he seemed to be feeling better. A comfortable silence seemed to fall between them after that as they continued to walk although she looked up as Adam spoke again. “Hmm?” she muttered automatically as Adam said her name. All of a sudden he seemed nervous and that alone was enough to make Ria feel the same way. Adam had put his foot in it a couple of times since they’d met but she had seen that he didn’t want to do that again so she wasn’t entirely sure what had brought about this change in him but as he asked if she wanted to get something to eat with him as a date, her smile turned gentle. “Adam, I’d love to but are you sure you’re ready for that? I think it might be a bit too soon,” she said, not wanting him to feel like he had to do anything that he wasn’t ready for. “You’re still hurting.”ADAM HAWTHORNE

━ heavy lies the head that wears the crown ━
”I’m really sorry.” Adam offered Ria a sympathetic smile when she told him that she had been feeling this way for a while, too. ”I really don’t think you’re a freak, though.” Adam assured her, his eyes focused solely on the other. ”I think you’re pretty cool.” The young boy added a moment later, his voice giving away the fact that he was being sincere right now. ”Oh, I would love that.” Adam said with a grin resting on his lips. ”I’d love to be a freak with you.” He added a moment later. ”I’m definitely excited to see it now.” Adam was excited to go to a school where he’d be able to be himself and get the help that he needs without feeling like a freak.
There was a soft chuckle that left his lips at Ria’s words. ”Hey, I can’t help it, okay? The whole concept just seems so cool to me.” He sheepishly rubbed the back of his neck, his expression turning a little bit shy. ”Plus, it’d make me really happy to know that you’re in control.” He added a moment later with a quick nod of his head following.
Adam’s surprise was evident on his face when Ria asked him for his phone. He patted his pockets quickly in search of his phone and once he was able to locate it in his left pocket, he took it out so he could hand it over to Ria. ”Um, here you go.” Adam looked pretty happy at the idea of Ria putting in her phone number because that would definitely make it easier for him to find her and reach her if he ever got wrapped up in a terrible headspace.
”I…” Adam’s lips parted and closed at Ria’s question when she asked him if he was ready for that. He had, after all, lost someone he once cared about. ”It does hurt still, but…” Adam licked his dry bottom lip as his nerves began to get the best of him. ”I don’t want to be in pain forever and I… I wanna get to know you, Ria. We just met but it kind of, um, feels like I’ve known you for such a long time.” Adam whispered, his tone remaining soft as he gnawed on his bottom lip shyly. ”So, um, yeah… I’m sure about this. In fact, I um… I don’t think I’ve ever been more certain about something before.”

“It’s ok, I think it’s something everyone goes through at some point,” Ria shrugged, knowing that she didn’t want to let it get her down. There were others like her at the Salvatore School that had been aged up by the spell and there were other werecreatures as well but she never knew just how much those at the school knew about what she had been through. At her last school word had spread like wildfire as soon as something happened so she knew that she wouldn’t be surprised if it was the same there but she was getting used to it, she knew that she just had to give it time and find the place where she fit in. “That’s good because I don’t think you’re a freak either,” she admitted. Adam really was incredibly sweet and he was someone that she had quickly come to enjoy spending time with. She didn’t know anyone else in Mystic Falls yet aside from her parents but now that she had met him things were already looking up. “Thank you, so are you,” she added with a smile as Adam said he thought that she was pretty cool. She hadn’t expected to find a friend like this but she felt comfortable around him and that was something that she knew that she needed right now. Adam’s next words were enough to draw a smile to Ria’s lips and she realised that she was starting to feel more like herself than she had done for a long time. “Let me know when you get there and I can show you around if you like. It only seems fair that I should return the favour,” she said, feeling her old confidence starting to creep back in. It wasn’t like her to feel this uncomfortable in her own skin or this vulnerable but she had found someone who knew what she had been through and still didn’t look at her any differently and that was something that she had really needed. “Same here. I’m learning but it’s taking time,” Ria admitted, her smile returning as she looked over at Adam. It still amazed her just how easily he seemed to be taking everything that she had told him in his stride but she couldn’t deny that she was glad that he was. As he pulled out his phone, Ria took it from him and programmed in her number before handing it back to him. “Now I’m only a call away when you need me,” she said gently. Adam had been through so much and it didn’t sound like he could talk to his parents about it right now just like she couldn’t talk to her parents about what was going on too much so at least that way they could be there for each other. Ria knew that it was perhaps a risk giving Adam her number in case he didn’t end up calling and she never saw him again after today but he didn’t seem like that kind of person and she hoped that he would get in touch. She hadn’t expected him to go one better than that and ask her out, though, and while she wanted to say yes she couldn’t deny that she was worried. She had never been on a date before and Adam was still hurting about the girl he’d lost so she wasn’t sure that he was even in the right headspace for it. As he spoke, Ria studied him carefully for a moment. “I feel like I’ve known you for a long time too,” she said at last before her smile returned and she nodded. “Alright, if you’re sure you’re ready then I’d love to but I should warn you that I’ve never been on a date before so I’m not sure how any of it is supposed to go,” she said, needing to be honest with him in that moment. ━ heavy lies the head that wears the crown ━
Adam was really glad that he had met Ria. There was just something about the way she comforted him that seemed to soothe the storm that always seemed to be raging in his heart and it was everything he needed in that moment because right now, he was nothing but a mess. He was filled with so many regrets and repressed emotions and so far, he’s been feeling more like a time-ticking bomb rather than an actual person and it was starting to drive him absolutely insane but right now, he could focus on something else and it was the conversation that he had going with Ria. It was filled with kindness and sweetness, it was everything that Adam’s life lacked right now. ”I’ll definitely take you up on that offer. I feel like I’d love a tour when I get there.” There was no ‘if’ in his words, it was only a matter of ‘when’. ”But please, don’t feel like you have to return any favors, I’m doing this because I want to, not because I feel obligated to, in any way.” Adam quickly assured Ria with a soft smile resting on the corner of his lips, his eyes crinkling at the corner as his smile reached his eyes for the first time in such a long time.
”You got this. I know you’ll be able to do it.” Adam encouraged her with a quick nod of his head following because he definitely believed in her. She was strong and seemed determined to grasp control over her panther form. ”I’ll try to, uh, control this...” Adam lifted his hand and looked at the electricity traveling between his fingers, it didn’t hurt, it just left him feeling a little bit of a tingle in his hand. ”And then we can really show each other what we’re capable of without feeling scared.” Adam’s lips stretched into a soft smile as he said that, his eyes relaxing upon Ria once again as he lowered his hand down until he reached into his pocket to grab his phone for Ria to put her phone in and once that was done, he reached for his phone when she held it out for him to take. He looked down at his phone screen, noticing how her number was now registered on his phone and it made his lips stretch into a soft smile as his heart did a little flip that made him feel quite happy. ”Oh, um…” Adam dialed Ria’s number just so his number could go through. ”Now I’m one call away, too. If you ever need me.” Adam said a moment later, his voice coming out soft as his eyes relaxed on Ria once again.
”Really?” Adam was a little surprised to hear that Ria has never been on any dates before, but then he remembered what she’d told him and nodded his head in an understanding manner. ”Don’t worry.” He was quick to reassure her. ”I’ll take care of you.” He said with a gentle smile on his lips. ”I’ll make sure you have a good time.” Adam added a moment later. ”I’d, um, I’d offer my hand but I’m kind of worried that I might zap you or something? It’s kind of not a fun sensation, that’s for sure. I just don’t know how to make it stop again.” Adam looked down at his hands to find electricity still traveling between his fingers like small lightning bolts, it wasn’t exactly a fun thing to see. It scared Adam, truly.

Ria hadn’t had any idea that her day would end up taking a turn like this when she’d decided to get out and take a look around the town. She had been there for a little while but she had been keeping to herself and hadn’t really ventured too far. It was taking time for her to get back to her old self and she knew that that was only natural considering everything that had happened but the truth was that she was tired of feeling like a victim. She had managed to escape and she was safe now so she knew that she needed to start living like it. She and her mom had decided to stay in Mystic Falls so that Ria could be close to her father and she knew that it was about time that she started letting people in again. She’d never had a problem making friends before and she knew that she wanted to get back to being that girl again. She hadn’t expected to hit it off with Adam the way she had done but she couldn’t deny that she was glad she had bumped into him that day. She had forgotten how quickly one person could make a lasting impression but Adam had definitely done that and she honestly felt lucky to have met him. “I didn’t offer because I felt like I had to, it gives me an excuse to see you again,” Ria admitted. She wasn’t used to this at all, she’d had male friends before but never someone that she had taken to this quickly and she knew that she wanted to make sure that she got to see Adam again so if offering to give him a tour could guarantee that then she was going to do it. Seeing the way that Adam’s smile seemed genuine this time was enough to make Ria’s heart race a little. “You have a really nice smile,” she admitted, hoping that she might get to see it a bit more often. “Thank you,” Ria said, a smile touching her lips as Adam said that he knew she would be able to learn to control her shifts. She knew that it wasn’t going to be easy but she had never been the kind of person who shied away from something that was difficult. If she didn’t learn control then she could end up hurting someone or worse and Ria knew that that wasn’t who she was or who she wanted to be. She had been born this way but she knew that she wasn’t going to become a monster. As Adam spoke again, Ria’s smile widened. “You can do it, I have faith in you,” she assured him. She knew that Adam didn’t want to hurt anyone either so she was confident that he would figure it out as well. “I like the sound of that,” she admitted. She didn’t want to be afraid of what she was, she knew that she needed to learn to embrace it and over time she hoped that she would be able to do just that. Putting her number into Adam’s phone, Ria handed it back to him and thought that was it but a moment later her own phone was ringing and she felt her smile return. “Looks like we’re stuck with each other now,” she laughed as they continued to walk. It really did amaze her just how comfortable she felt around Adam and how quickly he had made her feel that way but she knew better than to question it. As he asked if she meant it, Ria nodded. “Even in the fake memories I have I never went on one,” she explained. She knew that it was probably a little sad to admit but she knew that she could be honest with Adam and she was certain that he wouldn’t judge her for it. “I don’t doubt that for a minute,” Ria admitted as Adam said that he would take care of her and make sure that she had a good time. She wasn’t entirely sure what they were going to end up doing but she knew that they would figure it out. As he spoke again, her expression softened and she held her hand out to him without hesitation. “It’s ok, I trust you,” she promised him, her eyes meeting his as she gave him a nod of encouragement.
