England, 1492 The sun had slowly worked its way around the manor while he had remained in the library. The shadows slowly moving from one range of leaded windows to the other, slanting across the letter he had rewritten three times over now. Each iteration of it had ended up crumpled, despite the value in the heavy paper, tossed in the fireplace that had been kept burning in his chambers by the house’s servants. Elijah’s lips pursed, his eyes narrowed against the glare of light now shining direct in his face. The quill In his fingers bobbed slowly, carefully, so as not to spatter the page with ink. He suspect this was not quite right either and never would be but he studied the written text anyway. So different to the runes they had used even in the new world. The language captured so formal in its query but … not right. Elijah sighed, setting aside the quill with its cap of black ink still coating its split end. He crumped the page again, carefully avoiding the damp lines of ink. Twisting in his seat Elijah tossed it into the flames. They started to lick at it immediately, hiding his attempt at enquiring for news of the Petrova family. Katherine’s family. Turning back he sank back in his seat, his eyes narrowing again. He stared at the quill and lamented the words that had not streamed from it. Their guest had no notion that he had gotten in his head to make enquiries after her family. An idea that he should’ve driven from his head to start with. It was not his place to pry into her life before she had arrived in England and had become their guest. Stretching a hand, Elijah picked up the glass of wine that had been set at his elbow by a servant a half hour before. It bloomed warm on his tongue, eased the burn in in his throat that built as his hunger struck. A man should not look a gift horse in the mouth, he had warned himself but he had started to do that. It was a mistake. He had gone far too long without a bright spark in his life, now that one had started to grow in that darkness he should not be looking for a way for it to be extinguished. Pushing back from the chair from the cramped desk, Elijah took to his feet. Too much had already been extinguished, centuries of running and sacrificing to stay one step ahead of Mikael, to hide what they were from a world not prepared to know of their kind. Leaving the fire to consume the letter he had cast aside and the glass of wine, he walked from the room, heading for the chambers their guest was occupying. Half way down the hall he was pausing, the light from the narrow windows streamed down on her as she walked up the stairs towards him, highlighting the dark silk of her hair and the alabaster of her skin. It was as silky as the hair, warm unlike the stone when his fingers brushed it. Elijah leaned against the balustrade, head tilted. The smile that had graced his lips at the first glimpse at her grew, warmed like the sun that streamed in to lighten up the panelled space. ”I had just thought to come find you,” he murmured lightly, fingers extended to her to aid her up that last step. He took a half step back but remained in her space, close enough to draw her in as much as was properly allowed. ”It seems you have read my mind and come to find me instead. Has Niklaus kept your properly entertained today?” More often than not these days it seemed that Niklaus was gone. Busied with the business of being lord of manor, with the preparations for the ritual that would snuff that light out in an instant if another way tcould not be found.

━ all that you know is all that you are ━ SINCE BEING BANISHED FROM HER home and forced to England, Katerina struggled at first. She wondered for the few months and eventual year or so, what had happened to her baby and her family altogether. She knew out of all of her family she would miss her Mother and even the maid most, considering she bonded with the female counterparts of the family over the males all the time. Now however, it was 1492. In such little time Katerina excelled, learning English and living the life of any fortunate individual. It was in the same year she also met Elijah and Niklaus Mikaelson and like any hopeless romantic, felt odd attractions for the two of them. Niklaus for his bold moves and confident mannerisms and Elijah for his empathy, kind words and understanding. He was the type of gentleman any woman wanted.
Given a chamber in the Mikaelson's home, Katerina found herself unable to rest or sleep for the evening. She knew Elijah was potentially down the hallway, cooped up in the library as he usually was whereas Niklaus...She didn't have a clue. She had spent time with the younger Mikaelson earlier and while she felt entertained completely, the comfort wasn't the same as to what Elijah usually provided. As odd as it sounded. Unsure of how to quiet her mind or think of other things, Katherine rose out of her bed and gently tugged on the door, the pool of warm light filling the hallway.
Creeping quietly out and closing the door behind her, the Petrova headed towards to where she assumed Elijah may be, before stopping in her tracks at the silhouette of a familiar figure. Hearing that familiar voice only led to Katerina lips rising slowly. Her hand extended, taking his own as she climbed the final step, smiling up at him as she noticed how close they were. "I couldn't..Rest nor sleep. So I only assumed you may be in the library..Glad to see I was right." She said softly, a small smile on her lips. Elijah then questioned if Niklaus had entertained her today and the Petrova hummed in response. "He certainly knows how to entertain an audience.." She began, suggesting that she wasn't alone in Niklaus' presence. "Regardless...I did enjoy my time with him. I only wish you were around also."

England, 1492 It was supposed to have been another stop on the map, like so many others before. The inevitability of Mikael’s arrival and their total lack of aging always making moving on a necessity. Two brothers taking over the manor, one mercurial, the other the balm for the wounds his brother created. Two men who couldn’t have been further apart in temperament. Elijah knew the whispers that raced around the manor, the words inescapable when your hearing could pick out a pin dropping from the cook’s hair from a whole floor away should he choose to focus hard enough. Perhaps it was those whispers that had drawn their guest to them. Katerina had arrived a mystery, her ties to the old world, it seemed, as mired in as much fog as their own. Some things were better left there but others … Spending time with her had left the questions burning in the back of his mind. He was certain they wouldn’t be so welcome if he revealed to their guest that he had been attempting to make enquiries on her behalf. Missives supposed to be sent winging across to Bulgaria now smoke left to curl up into the sky from the chimney. Left restless by it and the notion that there was something between him and the girl with Tatia’s face in the first place, Elijah had set aside his wineglass and made his way out of his study. The questions would only lead to more, what could be here for a time ground down to dust and misery as so many other things had been in the last five centuries. He had headed towards her chambers, meaning to knock lightly, to enquire with his hands pressed lightly to that door whether or not their guest was awake, if she would perhaps partake in a glass of that wine with him. The quiet isolation of the drawing room, another roaring fire, the night sky dark and scattered with the pinpoint lights of the stars. It seemed as though their guest had the same notion though. The two of them pausing at the turn of the staircase as each had come into view. Elijah’s lips curled into a smile as he watched hers do the same. He curled his fingers around hers, drew her up until she stood level with him on the landing. As alone as they would have been in the drawing room. Elijah made a low sound, his lips pursing further with a touch of chagrin as he glanced back in the direction of the library. Just a few moments longer and she would have found him there, her own name scrawled on the paper in front of him. A possible awkward situation averted. ”It would seem as though both of us are restless tonight. I was there until only a few moments ago. I thought perhaps time to see you cared to partake in a walk with me, or at least a glass of wine … perhaps it will help you rest afterwards.” Dark eyes narrowed faintly then with concern, drifting over those familiar features with care. Bringing his brother up was perhaps a risky proposition, Katerina’s attention was already split between them, that sense of unease that she would be caught between them like Tatia had once been there in the pit of his stomach as soon as he had posed his question. Elijah let out a huff of an amused breath though, nodding slowly. ”That has always been one of Niklaus’ great talents.” That unease had been hair thin to start with but with the weight of Katerina’s words it snapped. His eyes held hers, took quiet study again before his smile grew apologetic. ”I am sorry to say I could not make it. Matters of business kept me occupied. Perhaps tomorrow I can make amends for my absence. I could arrange for the carriage to take us into the town if it would appeal?” For the most part he had allowed the manor’s staff to make those journeys, remaining here while Niklaus rode off into the fields, making enquiries of his own about the ritual. Elijah swallowed hard, his brows knotting for a moment as the weight returned to his stomach.
