| Mandy just could not believe what had happened over the past few days. She was still reeling from it herself. She had spent weeks trying to find her brother, what happened just didn’t make sense. He wouldn’t just get up and leave. He had a wife, was trying to have a child… leaving her didn’t make sense. She tried again and again to find him and had eventually succeeded. Telling Lorna, as she had been the only one around at the time the pair of them went to rescue her brother.
Though none of them anticipated what was going to happen that night. They were all hoping for a swift in, get her brother and get the hell out. Everything happened so fast, she hadn’t been quick enough to save Lorna as a siren ripped out her throat. Everything in that moment fell to her, had to help her brother out as he could barely stand. She refused to leave Lorna there, surrounded by the bodies of the creatures that had killed her, and had managed to barely drag her out of the building just as her father showed up.
From that point she followed her father’s directions, set the building a flame to hide the bodies of the several sirens which had attacked them. Nightmares still haunted her at night, much like they haunted Darcey’s as well, in the days that followed. She woke from one of those nightmares with a start, her golden hair falling messily around her shoulders. Catching her breath and telling herself that she was in her room, and it was a normal night like any other.
Deciding to make herself some hot chocolate before attempting to sleep again, she slipped her feet into her fluffy slippers before stepping out onto the landing and headed toward the kitchen. When she reached the living room with the open kitchen, she jumped seeing her brother already sat at the sofa. She smiled sadly, she hated seeing him like this, ” Couldn’t sleep either?” She inquired quietly as to not wake her mother and father. Walking behind the couch he was sitting on she went to the kitchen and flicked the switch of the kettle onto boil, ” Making hot choccie? Want some?” She asked him only to be nice… he had probably hit something much stronger a long time ago.

━ there is good in my heart, but these hands belong to the devil ━ Time was moving differently now, and it wasn’t just because of the drink in his hand. Three months away from home had felt like a night or two━and even now that he knew how horrible it all was, Darcey couldn’t help but remember it in a positive light. It hurt him that, after all the trap had taken from him, he couldn’t think of it and not feel a tingle in his chest or his stomach. They’d stolen Lorna, and his baby, and all Darcey could remember was how much fun he’d had. The sirens with their hands all over him, drowning him in lust and everything else unholy. Forcing him to forget about his family, and about his wife waiting for him, reprimanding Darcey whenever it was clear he recalled them.
A swig to forget it. Another for good luck.
It burned down his throat, but nothing hurt as bad as this heartbreak. Of the heavy lonesome feeling in his chest, despite being in a house full of people. His childhood home. That was supposed to be the most comforting thing in the world, wasn’t it? But he was unhappy even in his old bedroom, climbing out of bed and finding his way downstairs to search through their liquor cabinet. It was where he found the bottle that hung from his hand now, feeling heavier with each drink taken.
His head lolled back onto the couch, swallowing thickly while he attempted to clear his thoughts. Damn near impossible. Every time he closed his eyes, he remembered watching Lorna die. He tried to wash that away, and the guilt of his infidelity lay beneath, even if it hadn’t been his choice.
‘Couldn’t sleep either?’
His little sister’s voice broke through the wave of thoughts, causing Darcey’s eyes to fling open, head coming up straight. It left him a little dizzy, but he was focusing on her anyway. “Nope...” The word was garbled beneath his rough voice and his tongue, now numb and heavy from the drink. Blue eyes watched Mandy until she disappeared behind the couch.
Hot choccie? What the fuck was that? Was that some new slang he didn’t know about? The age difference between them was obvious every once in a while, but it hadn’t been so bad in the last few years. That word, though, made Darcey feel old as fuck.
“No,” He grumbled, leaving the bottle on the floor by his feet and using his free hands to push at the cushions. Leverage to get himself to unsteady feet, a couple of wobbly steps before he was on the other side of the couch, one hand gripping the back of it for balance. Slowly, Darcey’s head came up, a few strands of hair dangling from his face. “Could use a cuppa,” He’d make it himself, but even if he had all the time in the world, Darcey was sure it would either end up tasting like shit, or all over the floor.
He glanced at Mandy before his gaze fell to his feet again, exhaustion laying heavily over his body. “You thinkin’ about it, too?” He mumbled, knowing it was a stupid question. Of course she was. They’d both witnessed the gruesome scene, and Darcey cringed at the memory of when he’d shouted at them to leave, still under the siren’s spell and convinced he’d only been there for a little while. And while he wasn’t much of a talker, he knew that this was the only moment he was going to speak about it. With a few drinks in him, loosened up enough to spill his guts━if Mandy was keen on listening.

| Similarly, to her brother, Mandy was having trouble sleeping at nights. For what she had witnessed. What she had done. What she had failed to do. It was all these thoughts that plagued her sub conscious while she slept. Sometimes eventually exhaustion would take her back to a dreamless sleep. Others she would get up and either get some tea to settle her nerves, or hot chocolate. Others she would lie in bed and stare at the crack in her curtains and wait for the sun to rise.
This night she decided on some hot chocolate, slipping her feet into fluffy slippers as she padded her way on through to the kitchen, but not before seeing her brother, drowning his sorrows away on the couch. She couldn’t blame him… She had half a mind to go back to bed… though the fact he was in here alone didn’t sit well with her either. Instead, she made her presence known by asking him a simple question, the answer to which was obvious. He probably hadn’t even tried sleeping.
Padding her way past the couch and into the kitchen she offered him a hot choccie, young slang for hot chocolate. In Mandy’s head… everyone knew that. She smiled a little when he refused but simply busied herself in filling up the kettle and flicked the switch to begin the kettle boiling. She turned back around to see him walking and heading toward the kitchen, ” Sit back down before you break a hip, or worse mum’s coffee table.” Mandy joked, she often did with her brothers about their age gap, ” I’ll make it…” Mandy told him gently. She moved her head indicating for him to take a seat, eager to get the tea in him to start soaking up the alcohol.
Reaching into the cupboards for some mugs. Hesitating a little as she reached for the mugs as she heard his question. Mandy swallowed and reached for the mugs again and rested them on the counter, ” Yea’” She answered him her voice low, ” I can’t really stop…” Mandy admitted, sorting out the mugs with sugar tea bags and hot chocolate mix. Applying the hot water when the kettle was finished. Stirring them both quietly with the spoon she moved back to the living room and presented him with his tea, before taking a seat in an arm chair opposite the couch he had once occupied.

━ there is good in my heart, but these hands belong to the devil ━ ‘Sit back down before you break a hip, or worse mum’s coffee table.’
Darcey lifted his head slowly, blue eyes finding his sister’s face in the dimly lit kitchen. An amused smile pulled up the edges of his lips, a dry chuckle rumbling from between them. It was genuine, not forced out just so he could pretend he was okay━as if Darcey had the energy to placate her. She was probably right━though he’d never tell her that━he’d be crashing into something in a moment if he didn’t sit back down.
He nodded twice, movements still lagging in that drunken stupor. Eventually, after he’d let the question fall out, he turned and started dragging himself back to the couch. Flopping back onto the cushion heavily, letting his weight sink into it. Darcey thought of reaching for the bottle again, but he couldn’t even turn his head to watch Mandy make their drinks, let alone bend down to pick up the liquor. He sat with his head lulled back again, trying to find some sort of comfort in the rustling of cups and tinking of cutlery against ceramic. The comfort of home, if he could find that after Lorna’s death. If there was even something like a ‘home’ now, because he’d lost all chances at making his own.
‘I can’t really stop…’
Neither could he, but Darcey hated that his baby sister was in this position now. All he’d ever wanted was to protect his family, hands splattered with blood more than enough times before Mandy was even born. And when she was, he’d vowed to shield her just as he had with Nicky, but then she was the one coming to save him, his pregnant wife in tow━the two women (not including their mother) he was supposed to defend, not the other way around. His idiocy had gotten them into that situation━gotten his wife killed, and left Mandy with nightmares she couldn’t fucking escape.
Despite asking the question, he didn’t respond with more than a heavy sigh. What could he say? He was sorry? That was fucking obvious, especially with the way he whimpered and cried the whole way home from the siren’s den, everything from apologies and prayers dribbling out of his mouth.
In what seemed like no time at all, he could hear Mandy’s movements, heavy eyelids pulling open to watch her coming close with the tea. He lifted his arms, a move that felt like it took all his strength, and set rough, calloused hands against the hot cup. “Thanks,” Darcey mumbled gruffly, bringing it down to peer into the mug. He debated taking a sip, but it would surely burn his mouth and ruin any and all chances of actually enjoying the drink. Instead, Darcey set it on the coffee table in front of him and leaned back into the couch, tired eyes falling on his sister.
“Think I should go see Nicky.” Darcey admitted, eyes on the hands in his lap. He turned them over slowly, tracing the deep lines with his vision. “Don’ wanna ring ‘im ‘bout this.” And maybe a trip away from home would be good, considering Darcey had never been anywhere else. Nicky was always the globe-trotter, setting off to anywhere that would have him. The eldest Reid never had that itch, always finding peace right where he was━now home was anything but.

| It was rare these days that Mandy actually slept through the night. She would deal with it in two different ways. Get up and get a drink… something warm to hopefully relax her enough to sleep. Or lie there awake for hours… watch the sun rise through the crack in her curtains. Tonight, she had chosen to get up as she would be losing out on hours of sleep if she didn’t try to get some shut eye.
Slipping her feet into slippers and she padded through into the living room on her way to the kitchen. On the way deciding on a hot chocolate… when she found her brother sitting there… nursing an empty bottle of booze. She offered him a cup of something that… well it certainly wouldn’t be irish. Just plain old bog-standard English tea would be all that he was getting.
Telling him to stay in his seat that she would bring it out when it was ready. He asked about her if she was thinking about it as she busied herself making their drinks and she admitted that she couldn’t really stop. She went over the night again and again in her head. Was there something they could have done differently. She should have waited for their father… someone with more power than her. Maybe she shouldn’t have taken Lorna along… Mandy questioned her choices that night. The guilt she felt just ate her alive.
She presented him with his tea and nodded her acknowledgement of his thanks as she sank into one of the armchairs and allowed the warmth of the mug to warm her hands, waiting for it to cool so she could drink it comfortably. She lifted her gaze to him when she heard him mentioning going to visit Nicky. She nodded slowly, ” I think that’s a good idea.” Mandy agreed. News like this couldn’t be given over the phone, ” It would be good for you. To get a break from… well everything.” Mandy spoke pausing mid-sentence. Though even she could admit that every little thing must be reminding him of everything he had lost.

━ there is good in my heart, but these hands belong to the devil ━ There was a strange weight that kept Darcey tethered to the couch. Heavy and immobilizing, threatening to crush him into the cushions. It wasn’t the familiar feeling that came from drinking, it had another, more terrible thing tacked on━grief. The loss of his wife and unborn child, a fate that could’ve been avoided if he’d only… only… only what? There was nothing he or Mandy could’ve done differently, Lorna sacrificed herself in the end, but it wouldn’t stop Darcey from blaming himself. He couldn’t get rid of the blame swarming his mind, drowning it in sorrow.
The tea wouldn’t help either, but the weight subsided for a moment to allow Darcey to roll his body forward. Curling towards his knees with his elbows resting on them, just about the only thing keeping him from barrelling all the way forward into the coffee table. He managed not to spill the tea in that whole movement, having become an expert at transporting it during the time their mom was pregnant with Nicky, and again for Mandy. He would’ve shown off his ‘skills’ to Lorna, too, if they’d could have…
Another heavy breath tore from his lungs, bringing a thick cough up and out, into his hand. Phlegm, and a little bloody at that, spattered onto Darcey’s palm. He grimaced at it, face construed like he was disgusted at the bit of substance coming from his own body. He rubbed it on the outside of his jeans and shook his head, though that only made him feel more nauseous. Darcey’s boney elbows went back to those boney knees, icy blue eyes trained on the steam wafting off his cup, dead behind them.
He wondered, when he’d thought of the idea and after it left his lips, if Mandy would’ve insisted on following him. Maybe it was assumed, and she’d force it on Darcey later, or it was a tidal wave that hadn’t hit just yet. A ticking time bomb. Was that Mandy or Darcey? If asked, he would’ve said her, but it finally occurred to him to look at it from his family’s side. Hadn’t he always been a time bomb, periodically exploding? Before, he had Lorna and Nicky to keep him on a tight lead, but now, with both gone, he was like a rabid dog. Were they waiting for the sadness to sink away and get replaced by the fury he so often possessed? Was Darcey? Could he control himself without an anchor? It was as if he was born a werewolf instead of a warlock, the unchained dog of the supernatural world, anger uncontrollable. If he was, then Darcey was fucking screwed now.
“I’ll look at flights with mum in the mornin’,” He mumbled, reaching out to touch the edge of the mug experimentally, as if a few seconds would make it cool enough to drink. Though it was meant to be gentle, his poke rocked the cup until a few drops poured out the edge. It didn’t tip over, thankfully, but the mistake still left Darcey irritated by his own actions. “We should go back t’bed.” Truly, he meant just Mandy, but he’d lie on that old mattress if it got her upstairs and comfortable. For some reason, it seemed better than sitting up all night with a cup of… hot choccy. He couldn’t imagine the reaction if their parents were to find them like this, wallowing in pity together.
“Got even less of a chance of fallin’ asleep down ‘ere,” Darcey drawled, moving like he was getting ready to stand. His palms pressed to his knees and he leaned forward, but didn’t go much further than that. “Especially with your cup ‘f… warm sugar.” He grinned, eyes finally flicking to Mandy’s, though they lacked the humour he desperately reached for.

| Mandy could see why her brother would find the need to leave. Nicky had been a fixture for him. They had a bond that Mandy didn’t have with either of them. He could help in a way that no one here in England could anymore. When he said that he wanted to go and visit Mandy wasn’t going to stop him, ” Sounds good.” Mandy replied when he said that he would look over flights with their mum in the morning.
Mandy sipped her hot chocolate allowing the heat from it to soothe. While it may have sugar, but then again, she had sugar in her tea, so it really was no different, ” Soon as I have finished this I’m gonna try and catch a few more z’s.” Mandy repeated feeling the exhaustion starting to seep in already. Raising her feet onto the seat, curling herself up hoping that when she did go back into bed her head would hit the pillow and she would slip into unconsciousness.
Mandy watched as her brother announced that he was going to try and fall asleep, but wasn’t going to do so down here, ” Upstairs or down here, you ain’t sleeping.” Mandy announced as she sipped at her liquid chocolate. He moved as if he was about to get up and move, ” Hey its chocolate. Its warm and relaxing. Don’t want it don’t have to drink it.” Mandy narrowed her eyes at him even if he was grinning, ” Try it. You might like it and it might even help.” Mandy ordered, ” You, big brother are not getting up off the couch until that cup is gone. And I think if it came down to it, I might actually win since looks like you could barely stand in order to win a fight with me.” Mandy smiled giggling a little bit, humour managing to seep into her voice. Then again that was her personality, she had always been bright and bubbly.

━ there is good in my heart, but these hands belong to the devil ━ ‘Upstairs or down here, you ain’t sleeping.’
She wasn’t wrong, Darcey thought. He hadn’t slept, not really, in days. Dealing with the aftermath of this was harder than he’d ever thought… no, he never thought of it. If he did, he was the one who’d die. A fight, some freak accident; it was just more likely to happen to Darcey, not Lorna. But now here they were, without Lorna, and suffering.
“You ain’t either.” Darcey drawled, speaking as if it was a joke when, truthfully, it was far from it. They were talking about his wife’s death, a trauma neither of them would get through for a long, long time. He could still feel the quick pitter-patter of his heart in his throat, the trembling of his hands as if it’d just happened. In the moments before, he didn’t care if either Mandy or Lorna died as long as they got out of his way. And though he was under the sirens’ spell at the time, he’d never forgive himself for that.
Darcey raised a brow at Mandy’s threat, finding her eyes from where he still sat, unsteadily, on the couch. His head swivelled a little as he held her gaze, eyes glassy from alcohol and tears shed sometime before her arrival. He grinned anyway, snorting, “I bet I could take ya with one hand tied behind my back━even now.” He chuckled, though she was definitely right. Slouching back into the cushion, he huffed heavily, feeling like a sack of potatoes sinking into a bed of marshmallows. “Fine. I’ll drink m’tea, an’ you can clean up when I puke from it.” Eyeing the cup suspiciously, as if the milk would shoot straight out and bite him, Darcey eventually relented.
Carefully raising the cup, he let his fingers press to the warm ceramic until it felt like his skin might melt off from third-degree burns. That was when he curled three fingers into the handle and shifted until it was comfortable, then downed the entire thing in three big, steaming gulps. It was a wonder he didn’t burn off his tongue completely.
Making a satisfied ‘ah’ sound, like one a child would make after a big glass of juice, Darcey finally found his footing. Still wavering and unbalanced, but he was up, albeit with a groan and several shoves at the cushion. “Ya’lmost done with yer cup of hot sugar? Think mum would ‘ave our arses if she found ‘s down here.” She’d likely let it go due to circumstances, but it was reason enough to get Mandy upstairs. His own wallowing took second place when big brother duties were involved, and Darcey didn’t want her growing mould down here━not like he was.

| Mandy at least could get some sleep. At least until the nightmares woke her up. Didn’t help when the sheets and duvet on your bed were wrapped around you like a second skin, suffocating the life out of you. It was still a fair few hours before the sun came up, and their mother was an early bird. Realising when she was woke up that Darcey hadn’t slept a wink, but had certainly enjoyed reaching the bottom of that bottle.
Opting for a hot drink, hot chocolate for her, she offered some to her brother, who opted for tea. Warm drinks in hand she placed the tea in front of him and wrapped her hands around her own mug, allowing the warmth to quell the raw nerves from her nightmare, ” Yea, probably not.” Mandy agreed with her brother. In the end exhaustion might take him, allowing him a few hours of unconsciousness. She however had slept, restless and terrified sleep but it was still sleep.
When he was about to not drink his tea, she demanded that he did. Saying that she could probably take him right now given his current state of intoxication. She was joking of course, even now she probably couldn’t. She laughed a little when he said that he could probably take her with one hand behind his back, ” Maybe. Maybe not. Wanna find out?” She grinned back. Resting her hot chocolate in between her stomach and her legs she held her fists weekly in front of her face. Eventually he conceded to her and there was no need for fisticuffs, ” Thank god as I would likely break something.” Mandy muttered under her breath, ” If you do bring it back up, it will taste better than the pure alcohol at any rate.” Mandy hoped… she might be wrong. She’d never actually been drunk and so wouldn’t know.
Lifting her own cup of hot sugar as her brother eloquently put it to her lips and drank deeply. The warmth seeping through her calming her nerves, the visions of her dream fading into darkness, which is where she hoped they would stay. She watched him as she drank his entire mug in three huge gulps and blinked in surprise, ” Enjoy that did ya?” Mandy commented as she continued to drink her own at slower pace. Watching him shakily get to his feet afraid for a second he was going to fall over.
When he asked if she was done she looked at her cup, downing the last half in a few swallows, licking her lips, ” Yep.” Mandy announced as she got to her feet and lifted both mugs putting them in the sink, opting to clean them in a few hours… perhaps when the sun was up. Turning back toward him and stopped when she reached him. Reaching up she kissed him on the cheek, ” Goodnight big brother.” Mandy told him placing a hand on his shoulder as she stepped away from him heading toward the stairs and back up to her room. Muttering a simple spell to calm and relax her… she managed perhaps another few hours before she woke again and like so many other mornings, watched the sun rise through the crack in her curtains.
