━ sun's up, i don't wanna fight the daylight ━ "FUCK!" JASPER YELLED INTO THE void of the street. He had waited for the strays of the town to disappear into the darkness that was Mystic Falls before yelling at the top of his lungs, his earlier choices being one of his most regretful things. Since being kidnapped from the Dread Doctors, signs that they were still observing were always there. The little mind games they would play whenever Jasper refused to fall in line as he grew up in a home away from home, or whenever he refused to find potential matches for whatever abominations they were making. And this sign? Was completely the same.
A letter had been posted through the Romero's door today, through the letter box of his actual home in which he shared with his sisters. The same sisters he hadn't see in almost six...or even seven years. The Romero always lost count. The letter itself though was slim and simple. His name printed on the front of it with his address typed underneath. It was as if someone had printed his address onto a label. But the feeling and the contents of the paper was what lost Jasper. He paid no attention to anything on the letter as most letters would have started off with Dear Mr Romero, or Hello...Generally some kind of greeting. But this?
This was filled with names and numbers. But not any random names or numbers. Residents of Mystic Falls and their figures? Was their bounty. And Jasper's? Was at the top of his letter, the figure of five hundred thousand dollars staring back at him. At first, he thought it was a prank, a stupid prank that someone had set up for delivery just before the Romero was needed at the Grill for his shift. But with some hours to process it all and now in his brisk walk home...It was enough to say...It wasn't a prank.

Someone had dropped the bomb.
Mal’s mouth pinched faintly as he strolled down the streets of Mystic Falls, heading back from their little perch out in the woods to his apartment in town. Not so quick on foot, but he was far less likely to draw attention with just an evening stroll than he was to keep driving out to the same spot in a picturesque part of town that was anything but sleepy.
They were everywhere. The things they gathered like specimens for their experiments. The people hunting them, those blind little humans who still had no clue what was going on under their noses. Those adorable, naïve little nuggets had smiled at him as he passed them in the street, even the old biddies with their canes and zimmer frames and fluffed up white halos of frizzy hair. He’d flashed teeth back, blunt human teeth in those veiled smiles. Mal knew someone would see through that veil at some point and he’d have to do something inconspicuous or they’d have to pack up and move on again.
The list might just’ve been the prompt to make that happen, or it could’ve ended up a neat little pay day.
Starting to whistle under his breath, Mal drew closer to his apartment, his thumb punching the on button as he tugged his phone from his pocket. Hazel eyes dropped to the screen as he began to scroll. So many names, so much money thrown around to eradicate them. Some of their experiments were on there, others he was pretty sure he could get claws into now. Well, him or the kid.
As if he was mustered up by bloody God himself he held him. A screamed obscenity ringing in the streets that had him laughing. Looked like he wasn’t the only one to get the message and someone had a problem with it. The kid’s voice had grown familiar in the time they’d held him, that exasperation that he’d burned out of him a hundred times as they’d tinkered with his DNA, used him as a little gofer. The leash had been loosened a little now but it was never gonna be entirely gone. Not when chances were they’d still have to yank on it from time to time.
Up ahead he saw the shadow, the kid on the street. Mal grinned, unwilling to squelch it as he strolled closer. It wasn’t like he couldn’t be protected by those who’d looked after him all those years. He just had to ask but he knew that he wouldn’t. Jasper wanted further out, not further in.
Clucking his tongue against his teeth, Mal crossed the street diagonally towards Jasper. A cocky grin tugged at his lips as he stepped up on the sidewalk in front of him. He made a show about dipping in his pocket, dragging the phone out again to bring it back to life and waggle it in the air. ”Whatcha son,” he drawled, his accent thick. ”Sounds like someone’s gotten himself some bad news.” He twisted around, pretending to study the houses around them. ”You think there was anybody around here who didn’t hear?” His tone grew dryer at that observation, his smile brittle as he looked back. They hadn’t got this far by creating a bloody scene every time something went wrong.

━ sun's up, i don't wanna fight the daylight ━ SINCE STARTING HIS SHIFT, THE letter was the only thing on Jasper's mind. He didn't know how to process seeing his name as well as a bunch of other names typed across the A4 sheet at the start of the day, especially as his shift was upcoming and waiting for him at the Grill. But with several hours passing, enough plates collected and customers greeted, he was finally heading home and had all the time in the world to recollect his thoughts. Each person that entered the Grill that day was automatically suspicious in the Romero's eyes, regardless if they were male or female, considering the Dread Doctors loved to hire and role out others to do their dirty work. Jasper knew of such a thing from experience, especially since he had done a few favours or two for the Doctors in order to prove he would do anything to protect his family from anymore pain.
While Jasper assumed the streets were empty, his head lifted in fear, looking in all directions at the random sounds around him. His hearing focused on the skittering of small creatures, running in and out of the main streets, leaves and the wind blowing softly against objects and footsteps. Footsteps that only seemed to draw closer to him. Eyes glowed in the direction he assumed his threat was approaching from, and the golden rims only proved right to Jasper as a man began to speak, drawing even closer.
The older Romero watched as Mal's hand dug into his pockets, an action Jasper recalled the male would do often when introducing his presence to Jasper and even other experiments the Romero had heard of but had never seen. As he spoke, the anger within Jasper only grew more, resulting with the chimera digging his claw-like nails into his skin, to prevent a scene in the small area they stood in as well as to prevent drawing in unwanted attention. "What do you want?.." He asked, tone filled with venom.
Jasper had seen Mal well enough throughout his time in captivity, but always assumed Mal genuinely didn't exist. The Doctors and their accomplices hated to be seen, but Mal seemed to always love a little bit of attention. Something Jasper didn't agree with when he was under their wing. He was sure Mal knew of the letter and even assumed it was Mal's doing the letters had been out there, handed over to every positive experiment and supernatural of Mystic Falls. "How did you find me?.." It wasn't exactly like Jasper was hiding from the world, but more from the Doctors and their bitches.

Now there were those pretty peepers.
Mal’s grin grew as he’d seen the flash of Jasper’s eyes as he’d approached. Those were thanks to him and the other Docs, a little gift so to speak, even if his own place in the process had just been as muscle. The one to wrangle them in the first place most of the time, the one to restrain them, the one to keep an eye on them all afterwards. In a way Jasper had been different though, they’d twisted him up, sure, but he’d been held for longer than the others. A pet in a way, kept for more than just a few days. Afforded more liberties, including being allowed to remember who he and the others were when he’d left. Jasper knew better than to open his mouth about it though. He knew what might happen to his sister if he didn’t.
That gave his swagger a cocky little edge as he approached, hands dug into his pockets, his grin already pulling at his lips. Jasper still probably knew a little too much and at a time like this, that had to be terrifying. Not just a handful of scientists around to pull strings but who knew how many in town staring at a list with a pay day they’d probably never imagined listed on it. Hundreds of thousands of dollars just for committing a little murder. There weren’t much wrong with that was there?
Stopping in front of Jasper, his phone still dangling in the air, Mal frowned and tutted. If he didn’t know better he’d have thought Jasper didn’t want to see him, it stung, really. Feigning a pout, Mal dropped the phone back to waist level and started scrolling through the list, making thoughtful little sounds before he looked up at him. ”What makes ya think I want somethin’? I thought I heard a familiar scream, thought I’d come and see who was torturin’ you now. I guess I figured out who … or is this a what?” His tone turned thoughtful as he looked from the black screen of his phone to the paper Jasper held. Hmm. That list was definitely a cause for concern for anybody on it, or those tied to those who were. An anvil hanging over your head, a blade at your throat. Bloody hilarious.
Jasper obviously didn’t like his presence there either. Oooh, he thought they were tied together. This wasn’t just a little coincidence. Like those ever bloody existed. Laughing, Mal stuffed his phone back into his pocket and rocked back on his heels. Little Boy Romero thought he’d gotten away and was living the life of riley here. ”Did you honestly think you’d go anywhere without people knowin’ son?” As if disappointed Mal shook his head and sighed. They all thought they were getting away when they ran, including that little redhead who seemed to have made a vocation out of trying to keep others out of their grip. ”You’re not exactly the King of hide and seek. We’ve known where you were ever since you went walkies. I’m guessin’ you gettin’ that means someone else has got a clue too. Or….” He paused, studying the houses on the street they were on. ”Maybe everybody got one of ‘em. Wouldn’t that be a kicker, eh?” It might not’ve been too far from the truth either. This seemed to have gone town wide at the very least.

━ sun's up, i don't wanna fight the daylight ━ JASPER WISHED HE HADN'T SPENT so long under the Dread Doctor's wing, but with his free-will being taken from him, Jasper didn't really have much choice to do most things. The smug look on Mal's face was enough for the golden rims to return, but this time for longer - especially as the control on his own emotions was running thin. Jasper's sense of feeling and emotions were something the teenager struggled with in his pre-teen years under the Dread Doctors themselves, as they abused and controlled him like an animal - forcing him to adapt differently than any usual 'teenager' would. It was the lack of belonging around everyone that simply heightened it, and the Romero simply hated the reminder, especially with Mal around.
Golden rims dropped to where Mal had dropped his phone to his waist, before hesitantly looking back up. What was he planning? At Mal's response, Jasper grew defensive, taking another step back from him. He looked down at Mal's phone once more and then at the paper in his hand before realising what Mal was referring to. "Was this you?" He asked with a slight growl, eyes growing darker. "Or is this another one of your games?.."
At Mal's next point, Jasper tutted, side-stepping as he spoke. "I left and let you guys know I was leaving." He retorted, venom filling his tone. "You all lied to me and put Hayden in danger!" At Mal's jokes, Jasper only grew angrier, his fists closing, digging into his palms. "Whatever games you're trying to use against me I'm not falling for them anymore...So even if you didn't create this I don't plan on getting caught up in any trouble." Jasper had been careful since leaving, even taking an extended amount of time to reveal himself to Hayden.

There was always some emotional component with the shifters, with most of the supes actually. Get them pissed enough and the power that made them what they were glowed from their eyes or raced over their skin. Those physical warning signs that would’ve had any blind little human shaking in their boots. Unfortunately for Jasper here he hadn’t been a blind little human for two centuries. All the glow did was make him grin. Their one time captive, their little errand boy, had gotten a little ballsy since they’d given him enough rope to run free. He might not stay that way if he started bringing trouble down on them though. Mal clucked his tongue, tapping a finger beneath his own hazel eye before he shook his head. Not just a warning to keep what he was under wraps, but to calm down too. This wasn’t about to be a ‘lecture’ in the middle of Mystic Falls.
They still glowed as he’d inched closer to Jasper, lowering his phone to thumb through it idly. If the kid saw something more in that than he did then that was very much all on him, weren’t it? Mal looked up from under his lashes at the kid, waiting for him to put it altogether. Oh, he wasn’t going to disappoint at all tonight. The chuckle rumbled low from him as he rocked back on his heels slightly, highly amused at the way Jasper was putting 2 and 2 together and ending up with him. ”You mean am I the benefactor? You think I’d go around getting other people to do my dirty work instead of getting my hands bloody. Oh son, you’ve got a lovely opinion of me.” Woulda been a waste of fodder for their little mill if it had been them. Why eradicate when you could experiment? Why waste all that money either? There was plenty being pumped into this project, so to speak. Soon the town would be filled with those looking to monopolise on it.
Mal clucked his tongue, taking one last scroll through it before he’d tucked it away in his pocket. The targets had already been painted on backs, including on Jasper here’s sister. He held his hands up as his phone disappeared, spreading them in the air like that’d make him look like butter wouldn’t melt in his mouth. ”I don’t play games, don’t know where you woulda got that impression.” The corner of his mouth twitched up at the lie though. There was always some aspect of that with the experiments. At least on his part. Mathias was the quiet, broody type, Marcel serious as a heart attack, although that was understandable being what he was, emotions never his thing.
His frown was instant as Jasper started side-stepping him, his tone turning venomous. ”Oi!” Mal snapped, aiming a finger at him to pin him in place. ”Watch it boy. We let you go, we were never gonna let you just disappear though.” He hissed out a sigh, dark brows flicking up as he laughed low. ”Now you’re soundin’ like we were the ones to pop your sister’s name on there.” Hazel eyes narrowed at Jasper, that warning finger aimed at his fists. ”I’m not using anythin’ against you. It’s just a … happy little coincidence. How do you think you’re gonna keep yourself out of it? Or that sister of yours. You plannin’ on runnin’ son, or you gonna fight your way out of this one? Dozens of people in town have that list and right now they’re all lookin’ at one hell of a pay day.” Millions in the bank and a town left cleaned up for five minutes. For most that had to be win-win situation.

━ sun's up, i don't wanna fight the daylight ━ BEING NOTHING MORE THAN AN errand boy for more than five or even six odd years of his life, the Romero took the first opportunity at building his confidence and taking his own rouge step by stepping out of line. While the Dread Doctors of course didn't approve, they had also ruined their promise with Jasper - the promise being protecting Hayden by all means. With lie-filled words and broken promises, Jasper felt glad within himself to actually escape their control. Even though he knew the risks and consequences of it all. Especially with Mal now across from him.
As Mal began to laugh, the pieces soon fit together. Jasper knew what it meant, despite Mal not responding. Benefactor? The Romero asked himself, trying to remember that specific detail, as it could potentially help him in the long run. Jasper knew Mal liked getting into the heat of things, especially since Mal once wished the same for the Romero when he was still the Dread Doctors pathetic little errand boy. "If you're gonna kill me...You might as well get to it..." The Chimera chimed, his eyes glowing dark once again. He hadn't taken a life before, but to save himself, he would.
"Enough!" Jasper yelled, tired of Mal's games. "You say you don't play games but that's all you do. All of your words. Twisted, sick lies." Jasper had found that out fairly early into his captivity under the Doctors. As Mal snapped, Jasper found himself standing in place, just like how Mal wanted. Though the Romero's growls grew a little louder, while the pain he inflicted upon himself also worsened. "You think you still have control over me...You're wrong!" In an attempt to keep himself calm, the Romero knew he was failing miserably. "I don't care if you didn't put her name on it. But you all still experimented on her." He retorted, starting his side-steps again.
"I'm already on it!" He yelled, knowing he would have to protect himself one way or another. "I know you're somehow working alongside them regardless..I know it"

For years the kid had been under their ‘care’. One of the first successful experiments. A handy errand boy when they’d needed him, a pain in the arse when they hadn’t. Mal supposed it was just desserts in some sort of cosmic way. He’d been that boy for the madams down at the docs, the one who’d been under their feet, eating them out of house and home, generally being some sort of nuisance who was useful half the time. Knowing it didn’t make it much more tolerable though and maybe, alright, definitely some part of him had been glad when the boy had stretched the cord and finally thought he’d slipped off. Thought being the operative word.
None of them ever got away, not really. A little yank and this one would be right back.
Maybe he needed to be. Some foolish ideas had obviously got lodged in that noggin of his. Especially after the benefactor, as the string puller liked to be called it seemed, had made sure that list had ended up in Jasper’s hands like everybody else’s. List, plus one time babysitter appearing seemingly out of nowhere had to equal him about to be ganked somehow. The kid definitely needed to be back in school if he was making that add up. Mal let his chuckle tail off, leaned in to pat his hand against the boy’s cheek in a fatherly manner. Lifting it to scuff through that mop of dark hair. ”Anybody ever tell you you’re gettin’ a little paranoid in your old age? I ain’t gonna kill you, Jasper, so stop worrying that little head of yours. Now … I can’t speak for anybody else who gets their hands on any bit of that list and decides they want themselves a pay day.” The carnage that was already bloodying the streets of Mystic Falls on an almost nightly basis would only grow and bring the whole bloody lot down then.
A little prod at a time and the boy had gotten himself all frustrated and snappy. Mal looked at him with apathetic eyes rolling. That small smile continued to play around the corners of his mouth though. He fixed his eyes on Jasper, waiting for it all to blow out of him before he sighed. ”You done yet?” he drawled. ”Work … fun … that’s all separate and the sort of games you’re accusin’ us of now has never been our thing. You think we need money to do what we do, or someone to start wipin’ out all them we might’ve snatched up?” He had. He’d also carried on knotting up the belief that he really was free. It was all boiling out with growls, snarling over the sound of his snapped words. Dark brows rose, his footsteps trailing Jasper’s, keeping him hemmed in. ”I ain’t the one who’s wrong here, son. You think we went pickin’ her on purpose to make sure we ticked you off? You’re getting’ it all scrambled up now.” Not that any of them were better than the others at keeping promises. It was always only as far as benefitted them.
Mocking laughter rolled tighter. Mal stepped in, pressing fingers in a splay against Jasper’s chest. He tilted his head, hazel eyes narrowing as that smile broadened on his lips. ”Seems to me what you’re on’s a tantrum. Calm it.” Clucking his tongue he gave the kid a light shove. ”What you think you know and what the truth is are two very different things. Listen to me now. We. Are. Not. Working. With. Them.” Like Jasper was slow on the uptake he nodded slowly with every word. ”Seems to me what you need to do is go watch your sister’s back. Don’t go scurryin’ outta town or anythin’, or you might lose the only protection you’ve got here. You hear me?” A warning he knew the boy would take. Although, it wasn’t like tracking him or the sister had ever been hard.

━ sun's up, i don't wanna fight the daylight ━ AS MAL'S HAND CAME CLOSE to the Romero's face, patting his cheek like a father would to their son, Jasper felt the heat and anger rise in his expression. He shoved Mal's hand away the more it moved, before taking another step back. "Paranoia or not, why the fuck should I listen to what you have to say?" Jasper knew Mal was enjoying this, the taunting, the fact that the Romero truly knew nothing of what to expect, despite something similar happening to his friends and family just months or so ago. It was a game to the Doctors, the same game that they had introduced when they first captured and kept Jasper as their little errand boy. Even if the list wasn't the Doctors doing, it felt like it.
"Scrambled up?" Jasper repeated, knowing that any wrong moves or even words was surely enough to push him in the deep end, and ultimately make things take a turn for the worse. "You all promised me you wouldn't touch her. That you'd avoid her and take all the experiments and potential people I provided." He added, his voice raising while his eyes shone gold for a moment. "I told all of you the deal was off if she was touched." And look at them now. Jasper had disobeyed, left the small apartment the doctors had provided and broke one of their rules - which meant revealing to Hayden who he was. He didn't regret it for a moment, not even now that his name was on the list.
As he was shoved back, Jasper's anger only rose more. But he knew by touching or even coming close to Mal was a sign of action, a threat to whoever Mal was with. In other means, an open invitation for an attack. And Jasper knew the kind of person Mal was, even without completely knowing him. He never truly was alone. "Protection?" He laughed, shaking his head at the older man's response. "When have you ever protected me? You stole my life as a kid, and have seemingly been stalking me ever since. Even if you're not working with them, whoever they are, what makes you think I wouldn't come for you guys eventually?"

He’d always liked it when they fought back. Proved some of them had guts after all. They were the ones he’d come back and see in their little cages, rattling the bars to get them all riled up. This one had been a quiet little thing for the most part, toeing the line when they’d threatened those sisters of him. Jasper had teeth now though, didn’t he and he was trying to snap them at him.
Mal laughed, his hand coming back in after Jasper shoved it away. He aimed a blunt finger at the boy’s nose in warning. The kid obviously took it, scurrying away from him like a couple of feet was gonna make up for almost 200 years of experience in dealing with snot nosed little brats like him. ”Cause I’m the only one you around here with a brain son. I guess you can listen to everyone else or try and rely on what you got up here…” Tapping that finger against his temper Mal smirked. There wasn’t enough going on up there, or at least not enough for him to be putting together the pieces and finding out who was really behind all of this. ”Or you can listen and maybe you and that sister of yours get to stay alive.” For the minute. He wasn’t about to play babysitter when there was a pay day out there for him too.
Jasper weren’t listening though. He was caught in that trap of fight or flight and flight seemed to be winning out. As he’d retreated Mal had followed, not giving him space to run or to think. Unable to keep himself from yapping he’d prodded and poked, knowing that if Jasper did bite back it’d be nothing but a little nibble. Small ineffective teeth in every regard. Mal’s hands rose, spread, his lips pursing. ”Now, there was a little wiggle room in all of it weren’t there? Maybe we took a little much but she’s better than fine now, ain’t she? No failure.” He dropped his voice on the word, letting out a cackle. The girl had come close to failing and being thrown aside. ”I think you’d probably be better off thankin’ us instead. She still takin’ those pills, Jasper?” The boy’s name was a croon, the smug sweeping back in behind it. He knew she wasn’t. You didn’t need medicine when you were something that healed almost immediately.
Teeth bared Mal had laid hands on finally, pushing the boy back to knock some of that sanctimony right out of him. Knock those words off his tongue and get him to open his eyes. He let the laugh roll off of him like water off a particularly uncaring duck’s back. ”You want us to withdraw it and see who comes callin’ on ya? I’m sure there’s some hunters around here that’d give their eye teeth for somethin’ like you to put on their mantle.” Tutting, Mal shot him a look of disgust. ”Stalkin’? You’re makin’ it sound grubby now. You wanna put the threat on us now? Big words boy. If I was you I’d run on him now, make sure that there ain’t already someone knockin’ on the door to talk to … Hayden weren’t it?” It didn’t matter how big an eye that kept on either one of them, if that list stayed around eventually both of them would end up exchanged for a stack of bills.

━ sun's up, i don't wanna fight the daylight ━ JASPER'S EYES SIMPLY WATCHED AS Mal moved his fingers up to his temple, tapping as he spoke. Jasper couldn't get past the riddles or even the way Mal spoke, finding the whole thing to be confusing. There were things Mal was hiding from him, potentially the truth or even another riddle which the younger brunette knew he didn't have the time or patience to crack on. At the mention of Hayden and staying alive, Jasper's knee jerk reaction was to yell in response. "Shut up!" He began. "You knew I would leave the moment I found out. So why even promise something that you all planned on breaking?"
At Mal's question, Jasper suddenly felt the need to charge at the man and try to even remotely fight him. But with their surroundings, and those who had followed Mal, the Romero knew he didn't stand a chance. Instead he tutted, digging his claws into his palms to travel the anger around his body and prevent his mind from clouding up any further. "Screw you." He growled, feeling the need to charge even more, just to wipe that smirk off of Mal's face.
Knowing that if Jasper stepped too far, something could generally happen to either Hayden or Val. And while he wanted nothing more to rip Mal's head off, he cared for the protection of his family more. "What are you even protecting me from?..Or why?.." He found himself asking.

Ooop, another dig at the soft spot. Mal’s brows hitched, amusement tugging at his mouth as Jasper snapped. Once upon a time they’d have taught him a lesson for that, no back chatting, no standing up against the docs. They took a hard line – well, he did anyway, as the enforcer. Jasper had been allowed out from under the thumb, more knowledge in that pretty little head than the rest of their victims had all together. It had come with warnings about keeping his mouth shut – in return for them keeping their hands off of his sister – for the most part it looked as though Jasper was keeping that promise, even if they hadn’t.
Mal clucked his tongue, pursing his lips as he eased his weight forward to the balls of his feet, shoulders hunching in like he’d loom over the kid. His hazel eyes narrowed, head ticking back and forward. ”You’re talking like you expected us to be good, honest folks. Have you learned nothin’ by now Jasper?” The Doc couldn’t have given a damn, especially since he’d gotten his best friend back and had run away to live happily ever after, Mathias had his family back here and wouldn’t have known what was happening if he didn’t poke his head up from that every now and then. Him and their fourth? Well now, he didn’t think there was an honest, altruistic bone between them.
The kid was finally figuring that out. His little verbal prods hitting and hitting until control began to slip and Jasper started having to hold himself back. Now, now, he must’ve known it wouldn’t be a fair fight, even with all those little modifications they’d given him. Mal dropped his gaze to where Jasper had curled his fingers up. ”No thanks, son. I’d be careful with those if I was you … wouldn’t wanna nick yourself, would ya?” He made a face like it was paining him but honestly the kid could’ve torn himself to pieces and he would’ve just been irritated at the waste of blood – not that he would’ve drunk it with all that they pumped into their little experiments. Soured the milk so to speak. Blech.
Hissing out a sigh, Mal made a face like he was talking to a simpleton and flicked his finger towards where Jasper had tucked away his little list. Dozens were out there just looking for targets to cut down for a pay day and he was worried about them? Ha! Mal chuckled and sighed with disappointment. ”I shouldn’t think you’d have to ask but I guess we didn’t exactly upgrade your brain while we did the rest of ya.” He wormed his tongue into the pocket of his cheek before he started to step away from the kid. ”I know you think we’re the real nightmares out there, but there’s bigger, badder things Jasper and we don’t like losing our guests to ‘em. You’re our little successes and we wanna keep it that way. You know who to call if you find yourself in over you head, huh?” Mal wiggled his brows, slipping his hands into his pockets as he stepped down into the curb to carry on walking past Jasper. He doubted the kid would come crawling to them, but you never knew, especially when there was family on the scene.

━ sun's up, i don't wanna fight the daylight ━ THE ELDEST ROMERO KNEW THAT once he opened his eyes and discovered he was far, far away from home - the life he once knew was over. And the new one he was about to venture on would be filled with lies. He was still young then, without much knowledge on how to fend for himself without his parents say or help in most things. But when the Romero finally discovered what his purpose with the Doctors was, he didn't ask, nor tell anyone, but simply hoped they would keep their promise in regards to Hayden. He should've known hope was a stupid thing to rely on, especially in the eyes of psychopaths.
Before him, was a prime example of one of many psychopaths. As Mal ventured closer, clucking his tongue in response to Jasper's annoyance, the Romero's face soured as the older man somewhat teased him once more, that tone of voice any sane person would find irritable, especially as Jasper knew it was simply to wind him up. "Screw you." He spat in response once more, knowing that he wasn't the same kid he had been before being kidnapped, and even then - he learned the hard way anyway. "What I have learned is that no matter what I did, you all were never happy." It was true, after any successful candidate, Jasper was forced to find another...And then another..And then again, and the cycle simply repeated.
At Mal's 'warning', Jasper knew to simply rid himself of whatever the male was saying, as most times it was nonsense anyway. Mal was that type of guy though, the type to tease and fool around, knowing that while everything was up in flames, chaos around him, he would be simply fine. Jasper knew that revealing his anger could be a sign of weakness, but he was an expressive person ever since his 'freedom' away from that hell-hole of a town. He knew he could take Mal on, maybe for a few minutes or so before the older man's goons would have at him, but even as a Chimera, the Romero had his limits and he was sure Mal knew of them.
As Mal spoke more, Jasper's fists unclenched slowly, especially through the maze of simple-like riddles that Mal left. It quickly fit in Jasper's brain, especially since he had received a paper with his name and a bounty on his head. Even if Jasper was one of many few successes to the Doctors, he would never ask their help for anything, even if Hayden's life was on the line. They were the type to lie regardless of the timing, no matter if you were one of their perfect experiments or not. Once the older man approached him and simply walked past, Jasper knew there was no point in chasing after him, nor ever taking up the offer for their help. "I don't need you or your f*cking help!" He yelled as Mal's figure slowly got smaller in Jasper's vision. "I don't..need you.." He muttered out once more, but when Jasper looked up once more, Mal was gone.
