━ that wears the crown ━
Adam had yearned for normalcy for such a long time now that he had forgotten completely what it felt like. His nights were filled with either nightmares or sleepless nights. It felt like the night time dragged on for so, so long while in actuality, it didn't. When his alarm would ring in the early hours of the morning, he'd already be awake in bed. After he came back from the dead, something in him was left there. Was it control? Was it the false sense of security that he always felt? Perhaps it was both. Or maybe it was something else entirely. Something that was essentially who he was because right now, he had absolutely no idea who he was anymore, because he didn't feel the same.
His routine remained the same because he didn't want to feel like anything had changed at all. If he woke up and went to school like always, maybe then he'd actually feel like he's okay. Even though he knew deep down he hadn't been okay ever since his revival. After all, how do you bounce back from that? How do you explain to your loved ones that you had died? Adam wanted to fool himself into thinking that he was okay but everything around him was falling apart. His grades being the first thing that fell apart. Because despite him attending every class, he was distracted and all over the place. He could tell his teachers were disappointed in him and he was disappointed in himself, too. Because he wanted to be better than this, but no matter how hard he tried, it really did feel as though he was trapped in one place. It wasn't like he was scared of his surroundings or scared of people despite a good amount of them being behind the source of his discomfort, but they weren't the main reason behind his agony or his fear.
He was the main source of his own fear. He wasn't afraid of people, he was afraid of himself. Lately, he'd been going on walks a lot more in hopes of clearing his mind. Sometimes, he'd even jog and that was when he was doing before he snapped out of his thoughts that had managed to consume him whole and when he managed to grasp onto his surroundings, he found himself somewhere else entirely. He'd gone completely off his course and somehow managed to find himself deep within the woods. "W━What?" Adam breathed out, reaching for the earphones to take them out slowly as he turned around to look around him to be completely sure he was in the woods. To his terror, the sound of a twig snapping in half captured his attention and made his eyes widen when the twigs continued to snap under an incredibly fast pace. "Hel━hello?" He called out, his voice shaking as much as his hands were. The noises didn't stop. They only increased which made Adam take a couple of steps back, his heart hammering his chest. Horror was clear on his expression when he bumped into someone as he was stepping back and slowly, he turned around, wide eyes finding the eyes of a girl he knew from school.
"I━I'm sorry, I'm just so hungry..." There were veins dancing under her eyes, her hair was a mess, sticking in different places. She looked like she was sweating and on her shirt, there was blood. A lot of it. "I don't know w━what he did to me but he said I ne━ed to feed to complete my tra━transition." Her eyes were panicked and bloodshot as if she had spent hours crying. "What? Wh━what do you mean? Look, let me help you. I can, um, take you to a hospital. They'll look after you, o━okay? Let me help you." Adam tried to reason with her, ignoring the way his throat tightened as fear nearly consumed him whole. "I'm so sorry..." She apologized, her eyes focused on his neck and before he knew it, her teeth were sinking into his neck, tearing a pained yelp from Adam's throat. There it was again, that feeling of helplessness. The feeling of his body growing weaker. His chest rose and fell quicker as panic settled in his bones, making tears flow to the surface. "Ada, please s━stop. Please... You're hurting me."
I'm going to die. I'm going to die.
That was the only thought running through his head in that moment which triggered something in him. "NO!" He yelled as he shoved the other off of him, causing her to fly back. Adam didn't hesitate to take a few steps back before he turned and started running, glancing behind him occasionally to make sure he wasn't being chased and that was when he bumped into someone else. "No, no, no, please. Please don't." He staggered back hurriedly which caused him to trip but as his panic eased, he noticed it wasn't Ada. "I'm━I'm sorry... I'm sorry."

It had been a year since Lucifer had been freed from the cage and during that time Ben had been doing his best to get back to normal. Being around Claire helped, she had been there that day and when they got back to the motel room that they had been sharing for a while they had finally talked about the kiss they had shared while they were in Hell. He hadn’t known until then that his feelings were reciprocated but the two of them had been together ever since and she was great at keeping his mind off of what had happened. When he had died following the mine collapse he had often found himself getting lost in his own head but that wasn’t the case this time around. He had still had nightmares afterwards but they had eventually subsided and being able to keep himself busy by focusing on a way to help Henrik bring back all those that Azazel had had Sam kill had helped. Ben had found out a long time ago that he was much better off keeping busy and that hadn’t changed as he had gotten older. He was used to the supernatural world by now but the kids that Azazel had targeted as his Special Children were innocent, they were human before that and he wouldn’t be surprised if most of them were still in the dark about the supernatural world before that day. Deep down he knew that it would have probably been better for all of them if they had remained in the dark but Azazel had seen to it that that wasn’t an option and Ben had been keeping an eye on them ever since. He had wanted to reach out to all of them and see how they were doing but the truth was that he hadn’t known what to say. After he and his mom were attacked by a vampire and his mom was killed he hadn’t talked to anyone about what had really happened because he had known that they would think that he was crazy and he had a feeling that the other kids were probably in the same boat now. It was difficult opening up to people who hadn’t been there but he had been right there with them and he knew that he could answer questions that they had probably wanted to ask so sooner or later he knew that he was going to have to reach out. Right now, however, he was on the hunt for a vampire that had been going around turning people for no reason whatsoever. Ben had done his best to help the guy’s victims, he was a hunter but he also knew that not all supernaturals were bad and when it came to newly turned vampires he knew that they had a choice about whether or not they became killers so he knew to give them the benefit of the doubt. His second year at Whitmore had just started and it was sure to be a busy one but Ben had found a way to balance going to school and continuing to hunt and that was something that he knew that he wanted to keep up. Alex had told him that the way he had found a balance gave hope to them all and that was something that Ben had taken to heart. He had let hunting consume him for the first few years after his mom died but he knew that was because he had been so desperate to avenge her. He had wanted to kill the vampire that had killed his mom and after he had done that he had finally managed to get some closure and move on. Now he no longer felt like there was a hole inside of him that was threatening to consume him and it was much easier to juggle being normal to an extent and being a hunter. That day his hunt had taken him out to the woods. He had been tracking the vampire for a while but the guy was slippery and always seemed just beyond Ben’s grasp. He knew that he wasn’t going to give up, though, because if he did that then there was no telling how many people the guy would end up turning while he was in town and the people of Mystic Falls just didn’t deserve that. As he made his way through the woods he heard a commotion in the distance and he headed in that direction to check it out but quickly came to a stop as someone bumped into him. “Hey, it’s ok. Don’t worry about it,” he assured the boy before realising that it was Adam – one of Azazel’s Special Children. “What happened to you, are you ok?” he asked, his voice laced with concern as he took in the bite mark on Adam’s neck. “You’re safe now, I promise.”ADAM HAWTHORNE

━ that wears the crown ━
Adam felt like he couldn't breathe ━ felt like there was no air left in the world for him to breathe in. Or maybe it was something similar to him feeling as though his lungs were starting to collapse from the increasing amount of panic he could feel resurfacing again. His chest was rising and falling rapidly, his face was pale and his hands were shaking. Between the digits, there were sparks of electricity traveling between them in a fashion he knew all too well. He was losing his already loosened grasp of control over his own powers.
Adam looked over his shoulder, his eyes wide as he tried to fruitlessly search for Ada's familiar features but thankfully, he found none. His eyes found Ben again and slowly, he started to recognize him too. The cloud of panic fading from before his eyes, making it a little easier for him to recognize who it was. It was Ben. Seeing him again brought back unpleasant memories and it terrified him. It made his hands shake harder, the spark of electricity becoming way more visible now. Adam clenched his hands into fists, hoping that he'd be able to push past it and grasp the reigns of control again but it sounded far fetched, honestly. It sounded like something that was never going to happen. "Sh━She kept saying she was h━hungry and then s━she bit me..." Adam explained in a shaky voice, his eyes squeezed shut tightly as he forced himself to take deep breaths in hopes of pushing past it all. "She bit me..." Adam repeated almost in disbelief, his hand drifting to cover the bite mark, his heart lurching when he saw the blood on his palm when he pulled his hand away from his neck. "N━no please, I'm gonna die again..." Adam whispered, his voice far too shaky to make sense as tears filled his eyes, his hand going to the front of his neck, expecting to feel a gory wound there, but there were none. But his panic only made his powers spiral more and more out of control. "D━don't come closer... I don't want to hurt you. I don't want to hurt a━anybody..."

It had been a year since Lucifer was freed from the cage but Ben knew that it was safe to say that the effects of that day were still being felt even now. There were nights when he woke up in a cold sweat having dreamt about the events that had unfolded that day but those dreams were thankfully now few and far between. He had seen a lot of awful things during his life so far and he knew that if he let every one of them keep him up at night then he would never sleep again. It was easy to dwell on the bad things but one thing that Ben had been trying to do lately was to focus on the good instead. He was still at college with his friends and he was still hunting during his free time. He had taken his uncle’s words about his powers being an addiction on board and he had been doing his best not to use them so he wouldn’t end up following his uncle down the rabbit hole of drinking demon blood to strengthen them. It was something that he knew he definitely didn’t want to happen especially since Sam was still being possessed by Lucifer and he knew that it just wasn’t worth the risk. He had checked in on some of the other Special Children during the months that had followed since he and the others worked together to bring them back but unfortunately other things had taken over and he hadn’t been there for them as much as he had hoped he would be. He had kept an eye on them but he hadn’t reached out for a while and he regretted that now. As difficult as it had been for him he knew that it had to have been much more difficult for the rest of them. They had all died that day and a number of them he suspected hadn’t known a thing about the supernatural world before that so it had to have been an adjustment for them. That day he was hunting a vampire when Adam literally bumped into him and he reached out to steady the boy. It was clear that he was shaking and Ben’s eyes automatically shot to the wound on his neck. He would know a vampire’s bite anywhere but as soon as Adam began explaining what had happened he knew that it wasn’t the vampire that he had been tracking for the last few days, it was someone else who was responsible. Ben’s expression softened as Adam spoke and he reached into his bag and pulled out a towel before holding it out to him. “She’s a vampire,” he said as he held the towel out to the other boy. “Press that hard against the wound, it will stop the bleeding,” he said. Seeing the tears in Adam’s eyes, Ben placed a hand on each of Adam’s shoulders and held his gaze steadily. “Listen to me, you’re not going to die. I’m not going to let that happen,” Ben assured him before taking a step back as Adam’s powers began to increase. “You don’t want to hurt me and you won’t. I need you to calm down, it’s the only way you’ll get them under control. Just breathe,” he said, hoping that Adam would listen to his words. ADAM HAWTHORNE
