It had felt like there was something off about the town from the start but tonight … tonight was the worst it had been since they’d set foot down here.
Rowan stood in the yard of the house as the other guards stood talking quietly behind her. The moon had risen full a couple of hours ago, lighting up the outside of the white painted house like a beacon. In a genius move the landscapers had cleared a swathe of the woods around the house. All the better to landscape your garden, all the worse when you were trying to be subtle about that you had half a dozen people in place guarding you.
She let a long breath, eyes sweeping those woods again. For the last hour there’d been an itch between her shoulder blades, that sixth sense that had only strengthened after she’d gone to work for Ingrid and her boss had actively trained her to pay attention to that feeling. When it had had hit she’d sent their client into the house, surrounded by three of the guards. The man had complained bitterly the entire time but having him stalk backwards and forwards inside the towering glass wall that took up most of the rear of the house was just asking for someone to come gunning for him.
Holding up her hand, Rowan silenced the guards behind her. They might have been talking moments before but trained by Ingrid’s people as she had been they soon shut up. A gesture with one hand towards the woods on the left, where there been a flicker of something a moment before, and the two guards were melting away into that darkness. Wary, she started forward herself. Six feet into that ring of trees at the edge of the property and she heard it. A hissing laugh further back into the woods, mocking and then fading away. There was a rush of motion and she was taking off after it, despite the fact that this felt exactly like a wild goose chase. ”Fall back to the house. Make sure you secure the perimeter on the way in. Don’t open it up for anybody but me.” Orders were barked into the radio she wore, affirmative sounds coming from the other end. If this was a trap she’d be the only one walking into it.
She’d always been fast but the thing in the woods ahead of her was far faster. She had to have been fifty feet behind the thing when she sound came. A shriek, a thud and then silence. Rowan spun in a circle. What direction had it come from? It had sounded like it was everything at once, echoing around the trees. Five minutes of standing there breathing shallow and there was still no sign of the thing. Fifteen painful minutes passed before she managed to track the thing by her sense of smell.
Close, she thought as she crept towards a clearing. There was another movement in the trees, this one silhouetted, a form dark at the centre of a fiery glow. What the hell had been after their client? Throat working, Rowan saw the thing laying in the middle of the clearing as the glow got nearer. Did she move? She wasn’t sure, not until the thing wreathed in flame bent over the thing on the floor. Then she was rushing out, a gun in her hands, like that had much of a chance. ”Don’t touch it,” she warned. ”Hands up, move back!” Her mind was shrieking that what she was seeing wasn’t human, but there was something human at the centre of those flames. It was just something she didn’t recognize despite all her training.

Evan’s days were often made up of college and working at the hospital but for the most part his evenings were his own. More often than not he would spend his time studying before crashing out and that had ended up being true that day until he had met up with a few friends. For a long time Evan hadn’t felt like socialising too much since he had felt guilty about having fun when his whole family were gone but now he knew that Milena was alive after all and even though he still hadn’t quite managed to get his head around what had happened he was doing his best to accept it and the truth was that he couldn’t be happier about the fact that his sister was alive after all. They had always been there for each other and even though the loss of their parents was still a little raw now Evan knew that he wanted to enjoy the time that he had not just with Milena but with the friends that he had around him too. He still hadn’t heard from his best friend so he was starting to think that perhaps she wasn’t going to come back after all and if he was honest he knew that it was about time that he started moving on with his life so he was doing his best to do just that. He knew that his parents would have wanted him to be happy and even though he still didn’t know whether what his mom’s friend had told him about his dad not really being his dad was true he knew that he loved the two people that had raised him and he wanted to honour their memory. That evening Evan had ended up crashing after watching a movie with some friends and it was then that the beast inside of him awoke. Engulfed in flames it moved out of the dorms at Whitmore and headed on foot to Mystic Falls. It took a while to get there but soon enough he was making his way through the woods outside of Mystic Falls and he was drawn towards a body. To begin with Halwyn had only ever taken control on occasion but now it seemed to be happening more and more regularly with all of the deaths that were occurring in both Mystic Falls and Whitmore. The hellhound almost seemed to have his work cut out for it but that never bothered it. Instead it carried on helping supernatural souls find peace in either Heaven or Hell depending on where they deserved to be and that was never going to change. It had been Halwyn’s job for a long time and even though his last host had moved on there was still plenty of work to do and he knew that he had to do it. It was as he found the body that a voice sounded from behind him and Halwyn straightened slowly and turned to face the newcomer, his gaze fixed steadily on the woman. “Leave now,” he growled, already preparing for a fight if she didn’t let him get on with his job. Well-travelled and open minded her parents might’ve been but there were still things out in the world neither one of them could’ve imagined. They’d been so well intentioned but with that had come a naivety. Staring at the thing in flames out in the woods behind their client’s house Rowan almost laughed. She’d thought her own naivety had gone out the window the moment she’d seen her parents cut down. Bit by bit after that she’d been exposed to more than she’d ever imagined at Ingrid’s side. Had her boss ever come across something like this? Who knew. Ingrid would’ve had to have been there for her to ask and her boss wasn’t. She was back at the Grey Haven and she was the one in charge here.
Rowan felt her claws prick at her fingertips as the towering inferno turned towards her, a body barely visible amongst the flames. They scratched at the grip of her weapon, her eyes flashing blue as she shook her head at it. It had to be crazy if it thought she was about to turn tail and run. She wasn’t a fragile human, she wasn’t even the blinkered sort of supernatural who had no idea what else was out in the world, what nightmares existed. Under Ingrid’s orders she’d dealt with dozens.
Lifting her weapon as she settled into a shooter’s stance, Rowan gestured with the muzzle of it to shoe the creature aside. ”I don’t think so,” she managed, glad there was no hitch in her voice to ruin the impression of quiet professionalism she was giving here. Even if the primitive part of her mind was quaking, she could block it out, she’d been trained to block it out.
Not risking walking straight at the thing Rowan began to circle, crab walking sideways as she tried to get a better look at the thing and the huddled form it was standing over. What she thought she’d seen in the woods was smaller than this thing and it sure as hell wasn’t all lit up like a bonfire. Human blue eyes dropped to the body on the ground then back up at the flaming thing. Her chin came up to indicate it. ”There was something out in the woods by the house. Laughing, taunting, it ran. Was that you or was that it?” If it was this thing then she’d probably rushed right into the trap that it had left. If it hadn’t been … She sucked in a breath that felt just the wrong side of too hot. A shuffling half step forward and she was getting another look at the body on the floor. Almost human, it’s skin pale, limbs too long maybe. ”Did you kill him?” The question wasn’t an accusation but if she was right and the thing in flames hadn’t been what she’d chased, then the thing on the ground likely was and somehow it had died in minutes flat in a way she couldn’t quite tell now.

Darkness had fallen and with it Halwyn had taken over control of Evan’s body as he so often did at night. He had yet to reveal his presence to his host but the med student knew that something was going on, that much Halwyn knew, but he wasn’t sure that Evan was ready to see it just yet. He had so many questions about what had happened the day that he had taken control but Halwyn had made a promise to his previous host that he wouldn’t tell Evan until he was ready and that was a promise that he was trying to keep. It had been such a long time since he had last had to get used to a new host, he and his previous host had been together for centuries but the hellhound had known that the man had grown tired of the long life they had spent together. He had wanted to find peace and after everything they had been through Halwyn had known that he had deserved that much. Learning that a one night stand had resulted in his host fathering a child had seemed like the perfect solution and even though neither of them had been a part of Evan’s life before, Halwyn had listened to his host’s pleas to save his son and he had been doing his best to look out for the young man ever since. He could feel the heartbreak that Evan had experienced, he had lost his parents and best friend and he had believed that his sister had died. There was something else as well, hurt that had been buried deep decades ago that he couldn’t quite put his finger on yet, but he knew that he would figure it out in time. He could have let the boy sleep but Halwyn knew that he had a job to do and he couldn’t afford to let anything stop him from doing that. He was good at what he did and even though not all supernatural souls wanted to move on to the afterlife or were ready to do so it was his job to at least make sure that they had the option, among other things. It often seemed like his job was never done but the supernatural world was bigger than ever now and that meant that there were not only always people to help move on but he also had to work that much harder to keep the supernatural world a secret from humans. It often meant covering up the deaths of supernaturals and burning the bodies but that was something that he was used to by now. That night he had found a body that he needed to get rid of but before he could he was found by someone wielding a gun and a growl escaped his throat. The woman was stopping him from doing his job and he knew that he could kill her if he wanted to but that wasn’t his way. He was a hellhound and it was his responsibility to maintain balance, he wasn’t going to just kill anyone who got in his way. “Do you really think that was me?” he asked as he fixed his fiery gaze on the woman as she circled him, pretty sure that he already knew the answer to that question There wasn’t any conviction in her voice when she asked the question and what she had described simply wasn’t him. “I don’t kill people. My job is to help them move on when they die, maintain balance and keep the supernatural world a secret. In other words I have to clean up messes like this,” he explained. He wasn’t sure if she would believe him or not but she could have shot him already if she had wanted to but she hadn’t so he knew that she had to have some doubts that he was responsible for this. Size didn’t matter. It sounded cheesy and ridiculous when you were facing down something that was twice your height once you factored in flames pouring off of it and was at least twice your weight but working with Ingrid had taught Rowan it was the truth. The biggest things could be taken down in an instant if you knew what they were and how you could kill them. Ingrid’s training had taught her that, her people sharing knowledge, making sure that everybody on a job knew how to handle what they were expected to face. She’d been prepared for whoever was coming for her client. What she hadn’t been prepared for was this thing.
She didn’t want to fall back, racing towards the house with a warning pouring into the radio. Retreat wouldn’t do much good right now, but she didn’t particularly want to stay here and lose what might have been the person here to harm her client to those writhing flames. Rowan felt the heat of him on her skin, the wolf in her trying to fight closer to the surface to cope with it but this wasn’t a full moon, she wasn’t about to turn and take it on in wolf form.
Holding tight to her weapon despite her half turn, she’d held it on that thing instead, betting that there was enough intelligence in it, even in this form, to rationalise with her. If it wasn’t malicious maybe she could turn it away long enough to see what had happened here. If it didn’t involve her client then this wasn’t her problem. Rowan tried to keep her voice strong as she’d answered it but there was a shake in it, a hitch in her breathing as she started to circle the creature.
A low laugh rolled out of her as it answered her question. She bit her lip, shaking her head as she tried to study the face that seemed to be there beneath that bright wreath of flames. Her shoulders shrugged, her grip on the weapon not loosening as she glanced from the body back up to the creature. ”I don’t know. I don’t have a clue what you are, or what that was. All I know is I was told to expect trouble tonight and it seems like whatever lured me out here made sure I found it.” Hopefully this was all there was. If something had used this as an ambush to get her out of the way then her team could’ve been in trouble right now. Their client’s life certainly in jeopardy.
Rowan pressed her lips together, stealing another glance at the body. If it had been the human torch in the trees then surely she would’ve seen the light as she’d given chance. She hadn’t. That meant that chances were it was telling the truth and the thing on the ground had maybe been what had been out there. ”So you know what happens to them to get them like this? Something has to tell you where to go, who to … pick up. What did you see out here? What is … was he? What do me and my team have to worry about?” Too much. The voice in the back of Rowan’s mind was cynical. Her gaze flicked around the woods surrounding them. There was another sound off in the woods, a low rumble of laughter again. She hadn’t asked what would happen if the thing she’d chased wasn’t either the burning man or the body on the floor.

Most of the time Halwyn stayed in the background, only taking control of his host when he had a job to do. There were other hellhounds in Mystic Falls, he could sense them, but he knew that it was hardly surprising. They were few and far between but with the amount of supernaturals in Mystic Falls and the way that so many seemed to lose their lives so quickly it was only natural that they too would be drawn there. He had travelled the world more times than he could count over the years but this was the highest concentration of superaturals gathered in one place that he had ever seen so there was plenty to keep him busy at night while Evan slept. It seemed fitting in a way that it was during the town that he had chosen to make his home for the time being that he should encounter his former host’s son again, the child conceived after they merged in the hope that he would become a suitable vessel for Halwyn so that his former host could finally be laid to rest, but even so the man had seemed fiercely protective of Evan and that was something that Halwyn felt now too. There would be other hosts for him but this one he felt a connection to even though the man remained completely oblivious to his presence and he knew that he knew that their time together was going to work out well. Evan suspected that there was something different about him, Halwyn knew that much, but the guy didn’t have much experience or knowledge of the supernatural world so he knew that it would likely take him a long time to figure it out so he wasn’t too worried. Running into someone like this while he was doing what he needed to do wasn’t a part of the plan but Halwyn had had to adapt to a lot over the years and he knew that this wouldn’t be any different. “Whatever trouble you might find out here tonight won’t come from me, I can assure you that,” Halwyn said, his voice completely calm as he spoke. It wasn’t very easy to kill a hellhound so he knew that no matter what then chances were that he would be fine but he had made a promise to his former host that he would look after Evan and that was something that he intended on sticking to. “It’s safer for you that you don’t know what I am,” he added. Most people believed that his kind was nothing more than creatures from myths and legends and he knew that it was much better if it stayed that way. As the woman asked if he knew what happened to get people killed like this, he shook his head. “Banshees can sense death and sometimes use their abilities to stop it, I’m different. I don’t know how someone dies but when they do I feel myself being pulled in their direction – that’s how I found you out here,” he explained. “I don’t know what killed him but our friend here was a shapeshifter, his face changed back to how it should be shortly after I got here.”ROWAN BISHOP

After years running into situations that most would run from, Rowan was used to the rush of adrenalin through her system. It slid like a veneer over her laughter, a dark edge, and had her heart beating harder in her chest than usual, but she didn’t shake with it, didn’t give in to that hormonal burst and half turn. She put it to good use, bracing herself with that surge of energy, hands still set on the gun, her green eyes narrowing to jade like slits as she fixed on the creature. Whoever the person on the ground had been was of little importance now. Analyse the threat, decide who you had to deal with now and despite that laughter that she’d heard in the woods, the flaming giant was scoring pretty highly on her list now.
Rowan huffed out a breath, shaking her head but not enough to distract her from him. Plenty of people and things were willing to scream innocence and turn around to immediately stab you in the back. It was how the men had gotten into the village, the ones who had then slaughtered her family and the villagers. Bat your eyelashes, bring gifts, call yourself innocent. It was all down to the one who would believe you then and Rowan knew too much to just put her gun away and strap a halo on this guy. ”Call me paranoid, but I don’t tend to take the word of walking infernos, especially when they’re standing over dead bodies.” Trouble was trouble until it proved itself otherwise.
He hadn’t done that yet, despite coming off like some sort of zen master here.
The laugh was louder this time, a stunned burst. Maybe some part of her was cracking here, the unknown a weight on her chest that made it feel tighter than it should’ve done. She sucked in a breath, flicking the end of the barrel of her gun back and forth in short movements. ”Safer that I’ve got no clue what’s going on out here while my client’s cowering in his home? Right. If I’m not meant to expect trouble from you tonight, then what’s the problem with me knowing?” Because things like this didn’t come along every day. Power came with danger, Ingrid had proved that to her often enough. The more you amassed, the more people were going to turn their eyes you and eventually, no matter how powerful you were, someone stronger would come along and knock you on your ass.
She had no intention of going down that way tonight, even if she was probably the weakest thing in the woods right now. Worrying that maybe she was looking in the wrong direction, distracted by the thing that had lured her out here, Rowan glanced around. She should fall back now. Forget this thing … protect her client. The need only grew stronger as she heard the laughter again. Rowan swallowed hard, her hands beginning to sweat on the grip of the gun. ”So you don’t go trying to play hero? You just turn up to sweep up after them. I’m gonna die?” Now her heart was a lump in her throat, a growl vibrating past it as that laughter rolled through again. Something shot past in the woods, trees rattling, a shadow seeming to whip by in the end. ”I don’t care if it’s not safe, or that he could have changed to whoever he wanted to … I want to know what’s going on. What’s out there? You’re the font of all knowledge here after all. Crap!” Rowan stumbled back a couple of steps as something rushed between the two of them. She kept her grip on her weapon, bringing it back up to jerk between the guy in front of her and whatever had shot through the clearing between them. Fall back, get back to the house, regroup. The orders rolled through her mind but still she didn’t move.

Most of the time Halwyn took a backseat, it was only when the human fell asleep that the hellhound finally took control and was able to carry out his work. It wasn’t always easy but he didn’t want the human to know the truth just yet because he wasn’t sure how Evan would take it. Halwyn had come to an understanding with Evan’s biological father, the guy had wanted to father a child and he had grown tired of living the long life that came with being the host of a hellhound. They had both known that the child would be the perfect replacement vessel and in the end Halwyn had possessed Evan at his father’s request to save him from the fire that was meant to take his life. Ever since then Halwyn had been living in secret but if he was honest he wouldn’t be surprised if Evan knew that something was going on. He was a bright young man, after all he was well on his way to becoming a doctor, and Halwyn wasn’t sure when the right time to come clean would be but he knew that it wasn’t yet. Now he knew that he needed to keep both of them safe from this woman who seemed to know more about the supernatural world than some of the people in town. It was clear that the woman didn’t trust him and Halwyn couldn’t blame her but he really wasn’t meant to tell anyone what he was. That was the way it had been for as long as he could remember and not just that but it was a way of keeping Evan safe as well. If he went around telling everyone that he was a hellhound then it would only end up putting a target on the young man’s back, more of a target than there perhaps already was if what had happened that day was anything to go by anyway, and that really was the last thing he wanted. “Your client will be safe inside and you will be too if you join him. Whoever did this could still be out here somewhere,” he warned. Halwyn had seen far too many people die before their time and it was his job to help them find peace. His life was all about death but he didn’t cause it and he knew that he wasn’t going to change that now. “You don’t have to trust me but trust in that at least.” The last thing he wanted was for another person to end up losing their life that night but he knew that it could happen if the woman didn’t heed his advice. As the woman asked if she was going to die, Halwyn’s expression turned sympathetic. “I can’t answer that question for the reasons I gave you. I don’t know when someone is going to die, I only know about it after they have already passed away but I don’t want anyone else to die tonight,” he said, his words completely honest as he spoke. Halwyn always carried out the task he had been assigned so long ago as a dutiful hellhound should but that didn’t mean that he wanted more people to die because the truth was that too many already had. “I guess you could say disposing of evidence of the supernatural is a part of my job,” he nodded. He took the bodies and disposed of them so no one would learn about the supernatural and that was the way it had always been. “Listen, I already told you that I don’t know what killed him. I’m here to do my job just like you are,” he said, starting to lose patience a little with the way the woman seemed to be ignoring what he was saying. He knew that it was a lot to take in and he really couldn’t give her all the details but he just wanted to take the body and get rid of it as he was meant to and if she continued to stop him from doing that then he knew that he would have to take matters into his own hands although he would much rather avoid doing that if he could. He could see the way she stumbled back as something rushed between the two of them and Halwyn let out a sigh. “I warned you. Get back in the house now,” he growled, not wanting her to become the creature’s next victim. ROWAN BISHOP

Starting out in the business she’d ended up making a fortune in must have been nearly impossible for Ingrid. It wouldn’t have mattered that she was a dragon and literally could’ve fried the men who tried to keep her out of what certainly wasn’t a woman’s work then. They saw small and blonde and pretty and thought that there was no way on earth she could command a vessel, let alone ending up controlling ranks of highly-trained supernatural operatives. Rowan was well aware people had looked at her and seen the same. It didn’t matter that the world was supposed to have moved on, some minds were still stuck squarely in the past. She was a woman, slender enough to look like she couldn’t lift the weapon she held, let alone dump a 200lb lump of muscle and Neanderthal thinking on his ass. Now, she wasn’t about to throw the misogynist label at this guy – who knew if normal human logic even counted when you were a walking fireball, but…
Rowan wanted to growl as he warned her again, trying to coax her back into the house instead of letting her fight this problem head on. She hadn’t got to where she was by cowering behind the barricades, for that Ingrid would’ve kept her at the ass end of the job for an eternity if she got to keep her job at all. She smiled acerbically, her weapon twitching a little higher in emphasis. ”My client will be safer inside, but I’d be derelict in my duties if I just hid with him. This is a threat, possibly coming for the person I’ve been hired to keep safe, that means this is right where I’m supposed to be.” Even if that put her toe to toe with whatever did this and/or this thing that seemed to want to take charge of the situation.
Maybe there was some logic to his instructions, if he didn’t try and factor in just what she’d been training to do for the last decade and more. Rowan swallowed hard, keeping that same tense but fluid stance, eyes dancing from the guy to the dark woods around them. Trust in the fact that she was in danger and might be next, oh yeah, she could definitely do that, but it didn’t mean she had to like it.
The tension in her shoulders grew, that urge to retreat, just as he’d told her to getting stronger by the minute. Arguing with him, practically demanding to know the moment of her death was just making it all the more likely that he would have to scoop her up when her stubborn ass ended up toast here. Jaw tight, Rowan nodded. ”But if I do I’m yours to take to … wherever … that’s real reassuring.” Especially when there was that flattish tone to his voice that just smacked of honesty she wasn’t sure she needed right now. ”I’d be looking for a new job if I were you,” she advised hoarsely, all laughter dropping away. Their lack of knowledge was about to bite them right in the ass and her interrogation wasn’t changing that.
Gritting her teeth together, Rowan backed up slowly from the thing in front of her, trying not to let herself focus just on the blur of that thing. That was how you ended up blindsided, you watched the distraction and they came in behind it. ”You going to cover me while I run?” she asked, a thin thread of bitter humour overlying an honest question. Usually they would have at least two of them operating at a time like this, covering each other, leapfrogging back towards cover. Rowan’s back thumped into a tree just as the thing rushed towards the burning man’s back. ”Behind you!” The gun in Rowan’s hands bucked, bullets flying towards the creature with a vicious accuracy. Not down, she still saw the movement as she started to back up again, her hands releasing the empty magazine, slapping a fresh one in place to shoot again.
