If there was one thing in her, other than her altruistic streak, that had definitely come from her adoptive parents, it was her self-deprecating humour. She’d never been afraid to admit her faults, to take little swipes at herself. It helped you fit right into a situation when you were constantly the new kid, elbowing your way into established little knots of people. They tended to take to you easier if you were willing to get in all the jokes and jabs first and prove that you weren’t gonna burst into tears if they did the same. Clea wasn’t sure if that had meant it was that much easier for her to handle the truth that had blind sided her years after, so much of what she thought she knew of who she was shattering when her parents had explained that they had taken her in out of the good of their hearts instead of going through all the joys of pending parenthood with her mom’s belly swelling with that hyperactive little life kicking away inside. For a while after she’d felt brittle, like one wrong word would shatter her, now …
Clea snorted, shooting her boss a narrowed eyed look like she was at least half outraged, but wasn’t. ”Hey!” she griped before she started to laugh. ”Honestly, I don’t think they were in the end either. They learned to handle it all.” The burdens they’d taken on jading them enough that they’d known just what trouble she might find without them. Clea was sure she saw the relief in their eyes with every video call she had with them. Look mom, dad, I’m fine! The times when she hadn’t been, she’d avoided them until she could at least pretend to be steady enough again. Lifting her glass, Clea toasted Evangeline with it. ”Well, here’s to you finding that here again.” And to her not losing it when she’d spent all those years not knowing the truth of things. There were people here now she couldn’t have stood walking away from, the family who had anticipated her birth with so much excitement before her sister’s death had snuffed it out, friends, coworkers … Damien. Having people like Evangeline around like that would help her stay put. Not just because Evangeline seemed like a decent boss, she was a good person too, ready to stamp out any sort of trouble. When it happened she wouldn’t just end up standing by, she’d be there at Evangeline’s shoulder, acting like she was twice as big as her 5’6”. Tilting her head, Clea grinned. ”I would say I’m looking forward to it, but honestly, I’m not,” she promised. She pressed her hand to her chest like it was sealing in some sort of a promise.
As a good employee, and an even better friend, Clea was willing to drag Evangeline out even off the clock. It seemed like she was up for it too, the smile appearing back on her face. ”You’re the one that makes the schedule,” she mused, flashing her a grin. ”Any night I’m not working here I’m free. It’s not like my social calendar’s stacked.” Except for those nights where Damien showed up unexpectedly to save her life, or to pull off the Harvey act and convince her not to wall off her heart. Last time he’d popped up here and Clea glanced at the door like it might happen again as Evangeline admitted she sang. Glancing back, Clea let out a burst of laughter. ”Oh, hell no, I’m just a music consumer. If you got me up on the stage in here I’d be clearing people out instead of bringing them in.” Maybe that’d be a good thing considering the folks they’d been discussing only minutes before.

Evangeline had known that she was going to have her work cut out for her taking over an existing business, in the past she had started them from scratch but when she had found out that the Grill was up for sale she had known that the opportunity was too good to pass up. It was somewhere that pretty much everyone in town seemed to go and Evangeline knew that she could put her own stamp on the place while still keeping it going in the way that those in town would expect. It was just a case of finding a balance that worked for everyone and Evangeline knew that she could do that, especially with people like Clea by her side. “Are you really going to tell me that it’s not true?” she laughed. She didn’t know Clea very well yet but it was still nice to be able to have a laugh with her nonetheless. “That doesn’t surprise me, most people are pretty good at adapting,” she added with a grin. There were always going to be those who were too set in their ways but for the most part people didn’t tend to have too much of a choice in the matter and most learned to adapt if they had to. Lifting her glass, Evangeline touched it to Clea’s before taking a sip. “Fingers crossed. I have to admit I like what I’ve seen of the town so far,” she admitted. Travelling all the time had lost its appeal for Evangeline a long time ago and now she much preferred to put down roots in a place for as long as she could. As Clea said that she wasn’t looking forward to seeing her deal with anyone who tried something with one of the staff, Evangeline couldn’t help but laugh. “It won’t be pretty, trust me. I’m one of those people that someone might cross once but they’ll learn not to do that again pretty quickly.” She might be small but she’d had to learn to be tough and she wasn’t afraid to show those around her who was boss if she had to, especially if it meant protecting her staff. Getting to know the people who worked at the Grill and the locals who frequented the place was one thing but Evangeline knew that she needed to scope out the competition as well and she couldn’t deny that she would love having someone keep her company while she did that. She was used to having her friends around her and she hoped that they would join her sooner or later but for the time being she was on her own and she knew that she needed to start making some new connections with people. Clea seemed like someone who would be a pretty good friend to have if it worked out like that and Evangeline honestly hoped that she would. As Clea said that she was the one who made the schedule, Evangeline rolled her eyes playfully. “Obviously but for all I know you could have a boyfriend, girlfriend or even a couple of kids wanting your attention the moment you leave here,” she teased before nodding as Clea said that she was free any night that she wasn’t working. “Alright, I’ll take a look and I’ll let you know when a good time would be,” she assured her. “We could even make it a regular thing if you like,” she added with a shrug, knowing that her own social calendar wasn’t exactly busy right now either. “Remind me never to let you on the stage unless I want to get everyone out if they stay past their welcome then,” she laughed. It might be a good way of getting people to leave after last call but she knew she wouldn’t really do that. “So tell me more about you, what brought you to Mystic Falls? You mentioned your sister before, do you have any family still in town?” she asked as she started putting everything away now that they had almost finished cleaning up. CLEA GIVENS

She still wasn’t sure if her parents had thought that their lack of parenting experience was going to be a step up on whatever her biological parents were going to be able to manage with that whole ripped fresh through their hearts. They were altruistic, generous people, her dad doing whatever it took to save lives, even if it meant he put his own at risk. That had to mean that they’d known she’d be better off with them. If there’d been an ounce of regret about what they’d done, they hadn’t revealed it afterwards. They’d just made sure she knew she was going to be loved. Even if she drove them nuts. Clea considered lying about it, about them and how they’d handled her, but she snorted instead, just shaking her head at Evangeline. ”Nope, I’m not.” Her expression softened into a grin. ”They’re experts at it. You’ve gotta be when you work like they do. You never know what you’re gonna have on hand when you get to a new place.” Lost luggage, soldiers pointing guns at you, a screaming toddler who definitely hadn’t been happy about waking up in a helicopter. It was a lot for anybody.
Clea guessed she got her adaptability from them and her gifts from her biological mom. In Mystic Falls she’d always balanced on the fence between the two. Without one she definitely wouldn’t have been able to handle the other. She took a gulp from her glass before she gestured at Evangeline with it. ”There we go, one pro for sticking around right there.” In time her boss would either find more and decide this was it, or that con column would fill up and she’d bolt. Either way, she was staying put. Family, the job ... Damian … all ties keeping her here. The chuckle rolled low out of her as Evangeline made it clear she wasn’t gonna be some pushover while she was in charge. Clea pressed her glass against her chest, like Evangeline was a woman after her own heart. ”Do that once here and you’ll have the sheriff trying to hire you to clean up the town. We could do with some folks being taught a little lesson.” Although given how they really needed to do it, she wouldn’t throw Evangeline out there to the wolves … literally.
As an employee, that probably wasn’t her business, as a friend, as she guessed she was gonna become, she’d look out for her boss. All that experience in town was gonna pay off at some point or another. The alcohol hadn’t put much heat in her cheeks, but as she looked back from the door to Evangeline, that comment did. Clea bit her lip for a second before she shook her head. ”No kids, no girlfriend, no official boyfriend, so really, it’s an open field schedule wise.” How did you classify a guy who’d appeared like a knight on a white horse to save your life, one who’d turned up again on Valentine’s day to try and play cupid for her before he’d disappeared again. Setting her glass down, she brushed her hair back from her face, nodding at Evangeline while she did it. ”Oh, I’d definitely be up for that. A little stress relief sounds good.”
Straightening up, Clea took two steps back towards the jukebox like she was gonna prove her point. ”At that point, I’m your girl. Slap on some Pat Benatar or Joan Jett and the place will be empty in seconds.” They’d always been her dad’s favourites, pumping out of the crappy boombox they’d dragged around the world with them. The memory had her heart aching faintly as Evangeline turned the questions back on her. Clea sank back down on the edge of the table she’d been cleaning. ”I guess you could say I have family here on and off. My sister and my biological dad tend to travel around. I’m adopted. My biological parents … lost a child right before I was born. They couldn’t handle a baby then so the doctor who’d been helping out in town when it happened adopted me. That’s when I started travelling.” Skipping through more places than most people could ever have imagined, not finding out what she’d lost until far later.

Even now centuries after her parents died there were times when Evangeline found herself missing her family. That was one of the things that had drawn her to Mystic Falls, her connection to the Salvatores was a distant one but they were the closest thing she had to family and the truth was that it felt good to be around them. Evangeline had grown up being a part of the supernatural world and while it was true that she hadn’t had to hide the fact that she was a witch while she was growing up she had still learned to be discreet. Now there were plenty of supernaturals in town but even so Evangeline knew to keep what she was to herself until she really trusted people. It was how she had managed to stay safe all these years and it kept those around her safe as well. It had felt strange leaving her friends behind when she moved to Mystic Falls but she still hoped that sooner or later they would end up joining her. For now she knew that she wanted to make the best of it and it had to be said that it really didn’t seem like a bad place to live so far. Evangeline had travelled the world more times than she cared to admit and she had lived in lots of different places but it had to be said that small towns were much better than cities as far as she was concerned and the people were much better too. “That’s what I thought,” Evangeline laughed as Clea said that she wasn’t going to correct her. “That makes sense. Still couldn’t have been easy though, I’m glad you’ve had the chance to settle down here,” she admitted. Clea was an adult now which meant that she could do things on her own terms and no one could take that away from her. “Don’t worry, I already have enough to make me want to stick around. I’m afraid you’re stuck with me,” she grinned, knowing that a list of pros and cons wasn’t necessary this time around. Evangeline had made the decision to move to Mystic Falls and she stood by that. She had wanted to be close to Kol but she also wanted to be around the only biological family that she had left in the world. She had her friends and they were family to her as well but she had missed having people around who shared her blood. She had always felt so connected to her parents and the rest of her family but she hadn’t had that for a long time and she would be lying if she said that she hadn’t missed it. “I don’t know, that actually sounds like it could be fun,” she teased as Clea said that the sheriff would try and hire her to clean up the town. “I’m pretty good at barking orders when I need to,” she added, a playful smile forming on her face as she looked over at Clea. “No official boyfriend, huh?” Evangeline repeated, studying Clea carefully for a moment. “Now you have to tell me,” she said decisively. They worked together and that meant that they were going to end up seeing a lot of each other not to mention Clea was definitely someone that Evangeline could see herself being friends with so she couldn’t deny that she was curious. “I’ll remember that though, mine is pretty open a lot of the time these days as well so perhaps we can help each other with that,” she added with a shrug. She didn’t know too many people in town so she knew that she definitely wouldn’t turn down having a friend. “That’s settled then,” she nodded as Clea said that she would definitely be up for making it a regular thing. It was far too easy to fall into a routine of working and going home, now and then it was good to shake it up a bit and Clea seemed onboard about doing that so Evangeline really was glad. “And here I was thinking you might at least have good taste in music,” Evangeline teased unable to stop herself. Truth be told she liked both but with the way music had changed she knew that these days most people wouldn’t. As Clea explained about her early life, Evangeline’s expression softened. “I’m sorry you had to go through that. It sounds like things are better now though,” she said gently. Evangeline knew that she had been incredibly lucky with her own upbringing but it wasn’t that way for everyone and she was just glad that things seemed to have worked out for Clea in the end. “Are your family around now?”CLEA GIVENS

There were probably things out there that could stop time or go back in it to change things that happened, but even if she had the power, Clea knew she couldn’t do it. She would have loved her sister, her birth mom to be here with her. Changing what happened to both of them would erase everything that had happened since though. Lucien and Vivienne Givens would’ve gone on to Liberia without a baby in tow. They’d have carried on working their way around the world, saving lives, documenting the suffering they saw in a way that helped shine a light on those tragedies and raise money to stop it all. Maybe at some point they’d have longed for a child of their own, but they’d have carried on regardless. Her parents would’ve raised their three days, living out happy lives – maybe. There was no guarantee for any of them. Just as her adoptive dad might’ve ended up dying during the attack on the camp, her mom and sister could’ve died a thousand other ways. The thought left her smile wan, but what there was of it was shot in Evangeline’s direction. ”Thanks, me too.” It might not have been the perfect place to try and build a life in, but it was the one that had ended up working for her.
She could’ve spent months trying to convince her new boss of the same thing, but as Evangeline swore she was stuck with her, Clea grinned smugly. It looked like her work was already done – although she’d take a small pat on the back for maybe being the last straw to sway her over to that decision. Clea made a pfft sound and waved her glass in Evangeline’s direction. ”There’s no afraid or stuck. I’m not gonna complain about it if I get an amazing boss out of it.” Some might’ve just said it was better the devil you knew, but in Mystic Falls, everybody had a million layers, like an onion. That meant you couldn’t always get to know someone entirely, but she knew enough about Evangeline to believe she’d follow through on her threats. Chuckling, she took a sip from her glass again. ”Especially,” she adjusted, ”when that boss is obviously a wild woman. Next time Sheriff Forbes is in, I’ll slip her your number.” And she’d have her phone ready when something kicked off. They’d likely go viral with it.
It was a thousand times easier training that lens on somebody else. Evangeline had turned the conversation around on her, opening up the floor for her to spill about what else was going on in her life here. Clea felt a faint trace of heat rise in her cheeks before she grinned and shook her head. ”It’s no huge, elaborate story. I met someone here, you could save he saved my bacon. We’ve seen each other a couple of times since, but it’s not entirely like that.” Not yet. There was still so many layers of mystery wrapped around the two of them -what had happened with his sister when she’d tried to eat off menu here the least of it.
If she’d still been holding her glass, she would’ve toasted to Evangeline’s suggestion. ”Wing-women. I’m definitely up for that.” Clea grinned at the idea. There were many people she could drag out on the town with her these days. Her grin dropped, her mouth hanging open for a moment before she snorted at her boss. ”Oh, you know you’ll be up there on the bar with some kick ass rock blasting. You can protest all you want,” she crooned lightly. It wasn’t as though her music tastes were strictly from her lifetime. You took what you could get when you were halfway around the world. Her smile settled into a softer line as she settled on the table. ”Thanks,” she said softly. ”Under the circumstances everybody did what they thought was best and I can’t argue with any of that. I was happy, I was loved. What more could you want right?” As Evangeline asked about her family, she nodded. ”Both my bio dad and my sister have been in and out of town. My real mom … she’s not with us any more either.” It felt strange to put it so mildly, but she wasn’t about to explain that a demon had targeted her family and ripped it to pieces.
