Mystic Falls was a fresh start for Evangeline. She had heard about the small town in Virginia during her travels but the truth was that she had never thought too much about it until she had learned that the Mikaelsons were in town. She had spent years travelling the world so that she could retrieve the dark objects that she and Kol had created in the hope that one of them would be strong enough to free him but by the time that she had learned that his family was in town he had already been freed. For hundreds of years he had been her only constant companion and they had seen the best and worst parts of each other during that time. He was her best friend and the one person that she could trust completely in the world but there was something more to it than that, on her part at least. She had managed to bury it during the decades that had passed since he had been daggered but it had never truly gone away. She hadn’t known what to make of him at first while she was mortal but over time she had come to care about him and that hadn’t changed. Back then he had found a way to make her heart flutter just by walking into a room but she wasn’t a naive girl and she never had been. Back then she had known that nothing could come of it but that hadn’t stopped her from wanting it to. Now they were both different people to who they used to be but the bond between them was still there and it was good just to be around him again. There was a gentler side to him that others didn’t often get to see but Evangeline did and she knew that she was lucky for that. She could have suggested that they move on after he was freed so that Kol wouldn’t have to worry about his brother losing his temper and daggering him again but the truth was that she hadn’t wanted to do that, nor had she thought that he would have agreed even if she had suggested it. Things were different this time, Kol had all of his siblings in town including the younger brother he had lost a thousand years ago so she knew that there was no way that he would leave them all behind. Evangeline had never known the love of a sibling given that she was the only surviving child that her parents brought into the world so she knew that she would never understand a bond like that but she could understand not wanting to leave family behind. Instead they were both building lives for themselves in town and for Evangeline that included taking over ownership of the Mystic Grill. She had bought the place about six weeks ago and since then she had been getting used to the way that everything worked. She had kept all of the existing staff on and she had started occasionally taking on a bit more of a hands on role. That evening she say the last patron to the door before locking it behind them and turning to the only person still left in the place, one of her employees. “I know it’s late so you’re probably eager to get home but would you mind giving me a hand closing up?”[Open]

Most hated these evening shifts. They complained about being forced from bed in the mornings by their alarms but by mid-afternoon they were more than willing to down tools, strip off their aprons and head home. It left them their evenings for their own time, for the lives they had here in town. Not her.
Clea hummed happily as she worked her way along the bar, moving to the music that had been serenading their last few customers out. She’d always hated the rude awakening of an alarm clock, hated opening up, the dreaded peeling open of eyes before dawn. Nope. She’d been ecstatic when she’d finally come to at around eleven and had realized she could laze there for another hour before she had to get up and start getting ready. An hour reading the book on hellhounds she’d managed to source through a friend of SJs. Written by a fourteenth century French cleric, it’d made for interesting enough reading that she’d almost made herself late then. Still, there’d been a spring in her step when she’d walked into the Grill forty-five minutes later, a grin on her face as she’d passed their new owner on the way into the Grill.
Blue eyes rose from the glasses she was drying and stacking behind the bar to her now. A dark tumble of hair, a pretty face. Not like their old owner at all, although given the way he’d supposedly died, perhaps that was a good thing. Something had gone down in the Grill one afternoon, multiple people ending up hurt as they’d scattered from the place, more apparently dying. Some hadn’t wanted to come back to work after that but not her.
This was her place and this was her time of night here. Clea sang lightly as she set down the last half a dozen glasses. Tomorrow morning she’d be back earlier but it was all good, she could take one for the team every now and then, even if it meant tomorrow afternoon would be full of cranky Clea trying to get back into writing her literature report for this new PhD.
She just had her last glass chinking into place when she heard the door lock. Clea straightened up, propping her hips against the bar as she watched Evangeline turn towards her. One corner of her mouth lifted into a smile. ”Not as eager as you’d probably think,” she admitted. Tucking her hair back behind her ear, she nodded slowly. ”A big empty house, a dozen journal articles to read and two day old left over Chinese food, I’d say you’re doing me a favour by asking me to help.” It wasn’t quite as bad as she’d made out, not quite. Clea grabbed the towel from the bar and wiped her hands off before she headed around to the customer side. ”What do we still need to get done?” she asked. Chairs on tables to start with she guessed, once they’d been wiped down. The more that was handled tonight, the less they’d have to do tomorrow.

Evangeline hadn’t known when she first got to Mystic Falls whether she would end up sticking around or not, she had heard that the Mikaelsons were in town and she had known that this was her chance to finally free Kol from the coffin that his own brother had locked him away in decades ago but by the time she got there he had already been freed. It didn’t really matter to Evangeline that she hadn’t been the one to find a way to get him out of there because at the end of the day all she had ever wanted was for him to be happy and to have the chance to live his life the way he wanted to and he had that now. If she was honest she had half expected him to want to get as far away from his family as possible and had that been the case then Evangeline knew that she would have quite happily left with him but instead he had wanted to stick around and she knew that she wasn’t going to pass up the chance to start over. She hadn’t planned on buying somewhere like the Grill at first but she had wanted something that would keep her busy and when she had realised that it was up for sale she had realised that it was the perfect chance for her to start building something of her own. She had kept all of the existing staff on but there were some changes that she wanted to make and over time she knew that there was a chance that she could end up expanding the business. Evangeline had always liked the idea of having a goal to work towards, when she was human she had wanted to be the best ruler of her kingdom that she could be and now she knew that she wanted to do something different with the business and make it her own. She knew that the two weren’t even close to being on the same level but at the end of the day she had left her mortal life behind her a long time ago and now all she could do was try and make the most of the opportunities that came her way. There were some people who might not want to take on a hands on role and get involved in the day to day running of the place but that wasn’t Evangeline’s style at all. She liked working behind the bar when she could and she liked overseeing things while she was working on the books. She knew that she was never going to be the kind of person who took a backseat and let everyone else do the hard work, she much preferred being in the thick of it and that wasn’t something that had changed. That was why she had stuck around until closing that evening and after she had locked the door when the last customer left after last call, she turned back to look at Clea and felt a smile work its way across her face as the other woman spoke. “Well in that case how about a drink while we work?” she suggested, making her way behind the bar and grabbing two glasses. “What’s your drink of choice?” she asked, not wanting to assume anything and get it completely wrong. As she asked what needed to be done, Evangeline glanced around the room for a moment. “The tables need wiping and the chairs need stacking. We also need to run a vacuum cleaner around here, clear away the last few glasses and I need to put the takings in the safe. Everything in the kitchen is done so once that’s sorted we can get out of here.”CLEA GIVENS

She’d had her fair share of bosses over the years. Some got her, Clea knew that wasn’t always easy. They gave her the prized evening shifts, allowed her the mornings to grumble her way out of bed, afternoons for classes, trusted that she would work her tush off once she got there. They put up with a mouth that didn’t always knew when to stop running and some had even appreciated the faintly unusual rapport she’d build with the customers. She lucked out probably eight times out of ten. There were always going to be the outliers though. Those who looked at her as if she had her second head, who tried to mute her, who pinned up the schedule with an acerbic smile every week, just waiting for her to notice that she had a string of opening shifts. It was rare that she called any of them out, in fact, often she’d force one of those smiles back, fairly sure that she was going to outlast whoever tried to manage her. Her last boss here at the Grill had been a little of both, someone who might not have entirely got her but who hadn’t built the schedule with malice in mind.
Eyeing Evangeline as she locked the door, Clea thought that the jury was probably still out on their newest owner. There wasn’t any malice there in the smile she turned on her. She was beginning to edge towards liking the woman though. She was fair, she asked rather than ordered, in a job where gratitude wasn’t always thick on the ground it mattered. ”I had a feeling I was going to end up liking you,” she said with a chuckle. Sandy brows rose as Evangeline worked her way behind the bar. ”I was going to offer to pour but since you’re offering …” She made a low sound in her throat, clucking his tongue against the back of her teeth. ”…a vodka and orange, thank you.” It felt like the sort of night to get a little fruity instead of hunkering down behind closed doors with a warmed glass of brandy or a little nip of gin.
It would turn what could’ve been an odorous task into something a little friendlier. Clea folded the towel back up, setting it next to the busboy’s empty tub that waited for the morning. ”I can get started on the tables and chairs,” she offered, bending behind the bar to snag the tub of cleaning materials. ”So how are you liking Mystic Falls so far?” Her lips curved as she moved to the nearest table and sprayed it down. Clea looked up as she started working the cloth over it. ”I kinda guessed you were new town when you turned up here as our new owner. Almost everybody who comes to town seems to pass through here at least once and I didn’t recognise you the first time we met.” That wasn’t to say she was right. If there was one thing she’d learned about Mystic Falls it was that the town could always surprise you. It didn’t matter how worldly you were or how well you thought you’d gotten to know the place since you’d arrive. Take anything for granted and Mystic Falls would metaphorically bop you on the nose with the newspaper and show you the error of your ways.

When Evangeline first arrived in Mystic Falls the truth was that she hadn’t known whether she would actually be sticking around for too long. She had wanted to make sure that Kol was doing ok and she had known that there was a chance that she might move on after that but instead she had decided to stay. It had ended up being a pretty easy decision to make, there were plenty of people around Mystic Falls who were a part of the supernatural world which meant that she didn’t have to hide what she was from everyone if she didn’t want to. Evangeline had always been quite cautious and she often didn’t let people get too close to her if she could help it so she hadn’t confided in anyone just yet but the truth was that she was still getting a feel for how things were in the town so she knew that there would be plenty of time for that. Evangeline knew that she could have kept a low profile and not bothered working considering that she had built up plenty of money over the years and she could compel humans if she needed something but she liked being busy so that just hadn’t been an option for her. Instead she had bought the Grill and rather than just leaving her employees to run the place she was taking a much more hands on role. She had always liked making sure that her mind was kept occupied and working at the Grill definitely seemed to be helping her do that so far so she knew that it wasn’t a bad thing. Even though she could have easily gone through the routine of locking up on her own Evangeline knew that it would be much easier with help and she wanted to get to know her employees better anyway so this seemed like the perfect way to do just that. “Looks like I’m off to a good start if you like me already,” Evangeline said, a genuine smile working its way across her face as she moved behind the bar. She knew that liking your boss wasn’t a necessity but it definitely made things a lot more pleasant so she knew that she wanted her employees to like her even if it was only a little. “Not a chance, you’re off the clock,” she scolded lightly as Clea said that she was going to offer to pour the drinks. Nodding as Clea told her what she wanted, Evangeline poured the woman her drink and set it down in front of her before pouring one for herself as well. Taking a sip of her drink she nodded as Clea offered to start on the tables and chairs. “That would be great, thanks,” she nodded as she set to work on gathering up the last few empty glasses and took them through to the kitchen where she quickly washed them up and dried them before returning with the vacuum cleaner. “It seems nice enough and an old friend is in town which is definitely a bonus,” she admitted. “How long have you been living here?” she asked as she set to work running the vacuum over the place, knowing that her vampire hearing would mean that she would be able to hear Clea’s answer without any issues. “I guess new people are easy to spot in a small town like this, huh?”CLEA GIVENS

Others might argue with it, in particular her parents, remembering the way she’d dig her heels in when the frou-frou dresses were brought out before yet another benefit to raise money for the next war zone they were headed to or the way she’d practically held on to the door frames when the call had come that another chopper was waiting to take them on to their 8th camp for that month, but she was flexible. Clea liked to think of herself as someone happy to just drift along to the tide, to take the torrents and the rocks and the near drownings in her stride. There were always bigger, nastier things that could happen after all … and if there weren’t then it was probably too late for her to start worrying anyway. Maybe that belief that she tended towards rigidity had been partly to blame for her parents not wanting to open up to her about the truth surrounding her birth. They were scared she’d dig her heels in the same way and get herself stuck in some situation she couldn’t get herself out of. Maybe now, either way she’d only found her way to the town after she’d broken out of that constant cycle of travel.
San Francisco – an apartment, a job in a bar she’d loved, grad school and the majority of her PhD. One little dream showing her the path across country and the sister she’d desperately wanted to find.
Mystic Falls. A fresh start she supposed as she smirked back at her boss. Something she imagined Evangeline might know a little something about. Even if she wasn’t entirely new to town, taking this place on certainly would’ve taken a leap of faith. ”I should probably temper that a little by saying I’m the sort of person who likes almost everybody but truth is, you really are off to a good start.” Evangeline could’ve come and put her stamp on the place with draconian malice but she hadn’t and more telling than that she was willing to roll up her own sleeves and get to work. Clea mock narrowed her eyes at her boss. ”Doesn’t mean I wouldn’t have done it anyway,” she said honestly. If this was 6am and she was still in that window between when she was forced to get up and when she would’ve liked to it might’ve been a different story.
She took a sip of her drink before she headed for the tables with the cleaning supplies. Evangeline hadn’t skimped on the measure either, another mark on the plus side for her. Clea flashed her a quick smile as she began to wipe the first down, working her way around it. There was an empathetic look on her face as she looked up when Evangeline returned with the vacuum. ”That helps big time. My sister was here when I first arrived and it made everything so much easier.” Especially when it came to learning more about what she was and what was out there in Mystic Falls. Clea squinted, glancing up at the ceiling as she stacked the chairs on the first table. ”About three years now, I think.” She chuckled, moving down the line of tables. ”I was in San Francisco before I made the move. Where were you before?” Feeling a little rueful about the fact that she’d pointed Evangeline out as new to the town just cause she hadn’t seen her before, Clea clucked her tongue and bobbed her head. ”A lot of the time. People are friendly here … and a little nosy. Anybody new in town you can guarantee they’ll know about it immediately.” They’d gossip about it, voices audible in the square or in the Grill.

Evangeline had seen the world more times than she cared to admit but it was rare that she found a place that she wanted to call home for more than a year or so. She had found somewhere special before she’d headed to Mystic Falls and she had built a life for herself there but she could only stay in one place for so long before people started to realise that she wasn’t getting any older. Having good people around her helped, she had a great group of guys in her life now and she knew that she truly would be lost without them. She had left them behind while she’d headed to Mystic Falls so that they could tie up all the loose ends with the businesses she ran but she knew that in time they would join her and then her little family would be back together once more. Until then she was doing her best to make the most of it and even though she had made her way to the town so that she could try and help Kol she had decided to stay for herself. Mystic Falls was a nice place and with so many supernaturals gathered in one place she knew that it would be easy enough to fly under the radar. Evangeline had never liked drawing attention to herself the same way that others of her kind did, she had only ever been interested in living her life in peace and she was determined to do just that. Buying the Grill was a big step but it was one that Evangeline didn’t regret taking. She knew that she could do a lot with the place and she was looking forward to the challenge. “Good to see I can count on you to keep my ego in check,” Evangeline laughed. There were certain changes that she did want to make but she knew better than to think that she could do that over night and any changes that were made she wanted to make sure that she had the support of the staff. Evangeline had never been afraid of getting her hands dirty, in fact she had always much preferred a hands on role because that was how she was raised. Even during her days as a princess she had insisted on going out and meeting the people within her kingdom and she had done everything in her power to help them. A lot had changed after she became a vampire and she couldn’t deny that to this day she still missed her magic but she hadn’t let anything change who she really was. “I’m starting to get that impression,” she admitted as Clea said that she would have done it anyway. Pouring them a drink was the least that Evangeline could do and she lifted her glass to her lips before taking a sip. Nodding as Clea said that having her sister in town when she arrived had made things easier, Evangeline began working her way through the room with the vacuum cleaner and she felt a smile tug at her lips as Clea said she’d been in town for about three years. “I guess that practically makes you a local,” she teased playfully. “How did you find it?” she asked, knowing that it had been a long time since she had last visited San Francisco. “I was living in Atlanta. This is definitely a change of pace,” she admitted. As Clea spoke again, Evangeline couldn’t help but laugh. “I’ll remember that,” she grinned. “Is there anyone I should try and avoid?” she asked, knowing that she really didn’t want people prying into her business too much if she could help it. Honesty might supposedly have been the best policy but it wasn’t for everybody. Clea knew why her adoptive parents hadn’t been honest with her, they’d been trying to shield her, but having had to fight like she did to get the truth out of them, it was a policy she was going to cling to. Secrets and lies had cost her sister’s life and had left her drifting alone when her powers had come in. Maybe there was still some hole through the middle of her thanks to them too but with each passing day in Mystic Falls – with both sides of her family only a call away now – it was healing up. A layer at a time like a tree slapping another ring over what had wounded it. The honesty poured out of that place and that spring wasn’t going to dry up when the hole eventually melted away altogether. Naw, she wasn’t the sort to willingly hurt with it, but she was the sort to say it like it was when she could. People could then do with that truth what they wanted, but it was there for them to decide.
The sort she’d employ with Evangeline wouldn’t have any kinda barbs to it – not unless her new boss really started to run this place into the ground, or cast off the cloak of being a decent person to reveal some kinda monster beneath – which wasn’t exactly unheard of in this town. Clea flashed her a quick grin, pressed a hand to her chest like she was making a vow. ”Always. Just come look me up when you need a little air let out of it and I’ll be happy to help. Your hair today by the way … glorious.” One blue eye winked at the woman at that. Honesty cut both ways after all. Lean shoulders shrugged beneath her t-shirt, her eyes going from the blue slits she’d narrowed at Evangeline in mock threat. ”Consider me the kind who always likes to help,” she warned with a chuckle. Getting her own hands dirty – that definitely came from both sides of the family. Her adoptive parents might not’ve had a clue about the supernatural world but they were people for whom altruism was a way of life.
Clea’s throat went a little dry as she thought of where she could’ve ended up if the Givens’ hadn’t taken her in. Her parents might’ve put her into the system, fostering, group homes, they were good ideas on paper but not everybody’s experience in them worked out well. Despite the horror that had first revealed her psychic abilities and the constant travelling she’d had a good life. She swallowed hard, stacking the chairs on each table in turn, carrying her drink with her of course. ”At this point I guess it does,” she agreed hoarsely. Clea hummed lightly, tapping her fingers against the chair. ”Quiet, which seems crazy for a big city, I know. We travelled around a lot before that and packing up every couple of weeks to move makes things kinda hectic. That’s not too far from where my dad’s family are. They’re from South Carolina, we got some time back there every couple of years at least.” They’d loved her like one of their own too, even after everything had come out she’d never found herself questioning that.
Lifting her glass for another gulp, Clea leaned back against one of the tables, rolling the thought of not-so-friendly locals around in her head. She pictured the vampire who’d poured his drink down her when she’d called him out. ”Old Mr. Martin’s probably the worst you’re gonna find in here. He gets super friendly with the female staff. You married? If you’re not, he might just try and make sure you are before the end of the month.” Amusement and maybe a little affection towards the old codger threaded through her voice. Really the wizened old coot was the least of their troubles.

Evangeline knew that she could quite easily change everything at the Grill but the truth was that while there were things that she wanted to change, for the most part the way things were right now worked so she knew that she didn’t need to do a complete overhaul. She had run businesses in the past where she’d had to completely start over but this was different and from what she could see the previous owner had ended up employing some pretty good people so she knew that she wasn’t going to try and fix things that weren’t broken, that just wasn’t her style. “Oh I will, don’t you worry,” she laughed before feeling a smile touch her lips at Clea’s compliment. “Thank you, I could say the same about yours,” she grinned. There were people who worked at the Grill that Evangeline wasn’t too sure what to make of just yet but Clea didn’t fall into that category, she was someone that Evangeline liked so far. “I’ll keep that in mine,” she nodded as Clea said that she was the kind of person who always liked to help. “I don’t think that’s a bad thing,” Evangeline admitted as Clea agreed that she was practically a local at this point. Mystic Falls seemed like a pretty nice place to live so far even for one that had a reputation for being a beacon for the supernatural. Evangeline had lived in a lot of different places over the course of her long life so far but it had to be said that so far this was the town that had started growing on her the quickest. It was strange for Evangeline to move on without the people who had become family to her but she knew that sooner or later they would join her so the truth was that she really wasn’t worried at all. “That’s not so bad, it’s good that you were still around your family although I’m sorry you had to move every few weeks. That couldn’t have been easy,” she said, her expression sympathetic as she looked over at Clea. It sounded like the woman had been through a lot but she at least had the chance to put down roots now which hopefully wasn’t a bad thing. Continuing with the cleaning up, Evangeline couldn’t help but laugh as Clea explained about Mr Martin. “I’m not married but I’ve dealt with a lot of men like that in the past. Don’t worry, I can handle myself and I won’t stand for him getting handsy with any of my staff,” she said as she took a sip of her drink. One thing she couldn’t stand was anyone who worked for her being disrespected and she knew that she wasn’t going to let it continue now that she was in charge. “So is there anything else about Mystic Falls that I should know?”CLEA GIVENS

The best bosses were the ones you didn’t have to butter up. Of course that wasn’t going to stop Clea anyway. Despite the teasing, she loved to heap on the praise anyway. You could turn someone’s crappy day around with just a few words. It was like balancing the scales out for those she had to terrify with news of what was lurking out there for them. Without it all those nightmares would just weigh heavier and heavier until there was nothing left but that in her life. She wasn’t having that. Clea performed a little bow at Evangeline’s laughing words and then tossed her hair over her shoulder as she straightened up. ”Thank you!” There was a hint of colour working its way up into her cheeks at the thought. Maybe there’d been a little extra primping before shifts – just in case. By the end of the day it had usually all melted away, but it was just that first strut into the Grill that mattered. ”You do that,” she told Evangeline honestly. ”And don’t you be afraid to take advantage.” It was a natural instinct to wade up and give a hand, whether she was paid for it or not.
In a town that wasn’t technically hers there was no expectation from most that she should – her adoptive parents certainly hadn’t wanted her to wade into a wilder world than they’d existed in – but there was no way she could back out of it. Her heart ached at the thought of being back with her parents though, even for just a little break from all of this. Maybe it would be like a recharge, filling up her batteries before she waded back into the nightmares for a while. ”It all depends on who you’re asking I guess,” she snorted. Or how much you knew about what was out there and with her boss that was a big question mark so far. You never could tell that just from a glimpse at someone, her parents had certainly known more than they were letting on. ”As a kid,” Clea said with a sigh, ”nope. I hated it a lot of the time. Tried to fight them on it, now I kinda miss it. How about you? Were you much of a traveller before you came here?” Poking into people’s pasts on first meeting wasn’t always appreciated, so she’d grown a little more patient about it, even if she wasn’t much more subtle.
There were customers who definitely took the opening she offered and filled it with their entire life story, most of which she didn’t mind hearing. It meant that at times like this she could toss out those warnings so others could dance around the real trouble in town – the flirty old geezers looking for their seventh wives. Clea cackled as she braced her glass back on her thigh. ”If you actually throw him out can I watch? At his age it would probably break a hip, but it wouldn’t be undeserved.” She was kidding, of course, grinning at Evangeline as she said it. Clea hummed lightly, swirling her drink around in the glass. ”I guess it all depends on what you heard before you came here. I guess the biggest thing is not letting the local newspapers scare you – the wildlife here is nowhere near as bloodthirsty as they try making it out to be.” A faint shudder ran through her at that though. The residents were the bloodthirsty ones, although in a lot of cases it was because of a complete lack of control on a full moon.

Evangeline knew that she was on the back foot somewhat considering she was taking on an already established business and staff who already knew each other but the truth was that she was up for the challenge. She had owned businesses before and she still owned a few now so it wasn’t anything that she wasn’t used to but the stakes were higher this time. In the past if it hadn’t worked out then she could just move on and start over but this time she knew that she wanted to stay in town. Her friends were going to be joining her eventually but until then she wanted something to keep her busy and right now the Grill seemed like the perfect way of doing just that. She knew that there were some people who were only interested in how much money a business was going to make but that wasn’t Evangeline’s style, she preferred to be there working alongside her employees and that was the way she had always been. Right not getting to know someone she worked with seemed like a pretty good way of passing some time and Clea was definitely making it pretty easy for her. She seemed nice and Evangeline was pretty sure that the two of them were going to get along well which was definitely a bonus as far as she was concerned. “You’re welcome,” Evangeline said, offering Clea a smile as she looked over at her. She had managed to meet a few of the staff so far and if they were all as friendly as Clea was then she knew that she wouldn’t have a problem at all. Evangeline had picked up a few ways of dealing with people over the years but she always preferred it if she didn’t have to make too many changes to the staff. There were times when it was inevitable but she knew how disruptive it could be and that just wasn’t her style unless she had to. As Clea told her to go ahead and take advantage of her offer of help, Evangeline couldn’t help but laugh. “You might just regret saying that,” she grinned. “I promise I’ll try not to call you in too often though.” It was always good having someone she could call on to show up on short notice if she needed them to in order to avoid the staff who were there being rushed off their feet too much but she knew that she didn’t want to end up pushing her luck too much so she hoped it wouldn’t come to that too often. “I can’t imagine how difficult that must have been, I’m sorry,” Evangeline said sincerely as Clea explained what it was like for her growing up. Evangeline’s own upbringing had been so different to that, she’d been raised as a princess and taught how to best serve her people as their next queen. That was the way her life was meant to end up but it had proved to be so different to that in the end. Instead she had lost her connection to her magic the day she completed her transition and she had been frozen in time ever since. She had changed, sure, but she would never grow older and that posed challenges in itself. As Clea asked if she was much of a traveller before she got to town, Clea’s expression turned thoughtful for a moment. “In a way I guess. I’ve done a fair bit of travelling but I’ve been able to stay in each place for a few years when I’ve wanted to so nowhere near as much moving around as you’ve done, I’m sure,” she explained. “I’d put down roots in the last place before I moved here, I was there for a few years but it was time for a change,” she added with a shrug. “Of course, you’ll have a front row seat,” Evangeline laughed. “I might be small but I can hold my own,” she added with a smile. She’d been able to do that even before she’d become a vampire. While she was growing up she had been taught not only how to use her magic to fight but also how to fight hand to hand. It wasn’t the done thing for a princess at the time but her parents had wanted her to be prepared and Evangeline knew that those lessons had ended up saving her life on more than a few occasions back then. As Clea explained about the wildlife Evangeline found herself nodding. “I’ll keep that in mind but to be honest wildlife has never really bothered me too much,” she admitted. She wasn’t sure whether Clea meant the supernatural or whether she bought into the animal attacks but either way Evangeline knew that she would be just fine, after all she had been a vampire for centuries so she knew that she would be stronger and faster than most. “Is there anything else I should know? What’s the nightlife like around here?” she asked, unable to deny that she was genuinely curious. CLEA GIVENS

She’d have said it wasn’t like there was anything better she had to do, but Clea just sank her teeth into the tip of her tongue before she chuckled lightly. Six months or even a year ago that might’ve been the case – with SJ out of town again and her parents, all three of them, still thousands of miles away – there hadn’t exactly been a lot on her schedule. Now, a single night with a tall, dark, chivalric stranger and she was eyeing those free evenings with a more considering eye. Was it a little pathetic? Probably. It wasn’t like she had all that much else though. Work. Dreams. Damien.
Clea tapped two fingers to her brow and saluted Evangeline with a grin. There’d be time for a little more work, and if the rest crept in, then, well, she’d just juggle. ”I might, but I think I’ll cope.” Maybe Evangeline was right and she would regret it, that was a consideration for future Clea though. Right now, she was happy to put the offer out there. And stick around until they had the place ship-shape. Then they could both scoot out of here.
If she was going to take a break and see her parents somewhere – if their schedule could fit it – then she’d have to work up that good will with the new boss anyway. Clea’s shoulders still felt a little stiff as she shrugged. ”Thanks,” she said softly. ”I guess for any kid it would’ve been a lot to ask.” They’d had their reasons for being so strict with it, only she’d been so, so blind to it. Clea snagged her drink and took a deep mouthful, green eyes watching the other woman over the rim of her glass. ”Sounds a little like my childhood,” she said lightly, although now she was looking at her boss with a little more scrutiny. There was a pattern to that after all, one she knew a lot of folks in Mystic Falls stuck with it. ”That’s understandable. There’s always greener pastures right? Mystic Falls feels kinda like a big stop on the map for both of us.” She’d have said home, but Clea knew it wasn’t that easy. It had been the place where she’d found SJ and she’d settled. That could still change at any point though and now she wouldn’t argue too hard about packing up if she had to.
It all seemed a matter of if she had to, for Evangeline too she guessed. Whatever her life had been like before now, it now was gonna revolve around Mystic Falls and it’s raft of mysteries for a while. Their geriatric flirts were just a small part of that. Clea pursed her lips, eyeing Evangeline critically. ”Excellent. I’d put my money on the scrappy boss any day.” Maybe even against those things that went bump in the dark, although that wasn’t a question to throw in right now. Small steps in the whole getting to know you thing. Perhaps handy to call on later when the dark things in Mystic Falls raised their ugly – or in Damien’s sister’s case, pretty – heads again.
Clea crossed her arms over her chest, fighting against the sudden chill that built there. ”Me either,” she lied easily. It all depended on if you meant the sort with the capital W or not. ”I’d take the night life over the wildlife. Other than your own spot here, you’ve got Campbell’s – more of an old fashioned boozer if you get what I mean. There’s the club too, if you’re the sort who likes their Saturday nights filled with bone rattling music and a dance floor crowded enough to burst even the smallest personal bubble.” The club hadn’t exactly been her spot since it had opened, but she supposed she could see the appeal.

Evangeline hadn’t known how it was going to go when she had bought the Mystic Grill but it had to be said that so far things were working out pretty well. The majority of the staff had been nothing but welcoming and any that did have a problem with the change in ownership hadn’t stuck around that long. One thing Evangeline had wanted to make sure the staff knew was that their jobs were safe if they did want to continue working there and most of them had done so she knew that she couldn’t really ask for anything more than that. There were always going to be those who would come and go but she had a pretty good team working there it seemed and for that she really was grateful. “I’m starting to see that,” Evangeline said, a smile touching her lips as she looked over at Clea. Clea seemed like the kind of person who could adapt to just about any situation and Evangeline knew that that wasn’t a bad thing, especially with the reputation that Mystic Falls had. Evangeline had known that moving there would be a risk given the high supernatural population but it was one that was so far proving to be worth it so she knew that she just had to believe that it would continue to be that way. She had lived in a lot of different places over the years but it had to be said that small towns were always her favourite although she knew that she had to be more careful than ever while she was there to make sure that no one ended up figuring out what she was. “Definitely. Kids are resilient but even they can only take so much,” Evangeline nodded. It couldn’t have been easy for Clea to move around as much as she had done but she had managed to get through it and she seemed settled now so that was good at least. “That’s right,” she agreed as Clea said that there were always greener pastures. “I was happy to leave some of the places I used to live in but Mystic Falls is already starting to feel like home,” she admitted. It might be more dangerous to be there than anywhere else that she had lived before but she was already starting to think that it was worth it. She knew that she could build a good life for herself in Mystic Falls and that was something that she really wanted to do. “Hopefully we’ll both be able to stay here for a while,” she added, knowing that Clea would be a good person to have working at the Grill in case she needed someone to call on at any time and perhaps in time she would become a friend as well. “Perfect. That’s a bet you’d win every time,” Evangeline grinned. She was proof of the fact that looks could be deceiving and she wasn’t afraid to admit that. People often had a habit of underestimating her and thinking she was defenceless, then had to eat their words when she put them in their place. She knew that she would be able to handle a few rowdy customers quite easily and that wasn’t a bad thing. As Clea explained what the nightlife was like, Evangeline found herself nodding. “That’s good to know. I’ve never been one for huge crowds so I’ll probably avoid the club but Campbells sounds like it might be more my kind of place,” she admitted. “I’ve got some plans for this place, I’m thinking of putting on some live music events and having a themed nights every now and then,” she explained, hoping that kind of thing would end up going well especially with all of the events that she had heard about being a part of the Mystic Falls calendar before she even moved to town. Seemed like Evangeline was a good judge of character at least. Clea chuckled, tossing her hair back over her shoulders like she was preening under the compliment. Truth was, all of this was small potatoes compared with some of the other things that had gone on in her life. When you had bullets flying and vampires flying for your throat on one hand and the worst parts of her job on the other, she’d take the job every single time – even if that did leave opportunity for the vampires to … She swallowed hard, not letting her grin dim for a moment. She’d been saved from that, it wasn’t gonna happen again, she knew better now. Don’t let the vampires whammy you.
As a kid she thought she’d seen everything, ha!, the world had just been waiting to cast those scales from her eyes and prove to her that she didn’t know a damn thing. Clea smiled wryly, her gaze ticking up to watch Evangeline as she sipped. ”They break in the loudest of ways too. I think I was the reason my parents started carrying ear plugs.” Volume had stopped being her issue after a while, she’d learned to debate instead and there was no easy way of blocking that out once she started. Then she’d been tired of always seeming like they were running from one frying pan to another, now? ”If the town’s lucky, maybe you’ll call it home and stick around for forty or fifty years. Seems like the way they do things here.” Alright, maybe she’d seen herself doing that too. She’d put the deposit down on the house after all. It still wasn’t full of people, like she’d imagined, but for now it was suiting her just fine. That just left more room for books right?
If she’d been closer, Clea would’ve slugged her boss on the shoulder, a fist of support. Mystic Falls might’ve been a pretty decent place to live on the surface, but that wasn’t to say that the status quo here couldn’t be shaken up by a strong woman from time to time. She wiggled her brows at Evangeline, almost daring her. ”You wanna make it a nice pay day for me the next time they’re in?” Somehow she doubted that the new owner would wanna make a public scene quite yet – not that Evangeline looked like she would ever let anybody push her around too far.
She skirted the line on what she could manage, dancing between the wildlife and the nightlife as Evangeline had asked what the town was like. Clea reached for her glass again, crossing her arms as she lifted it to her lips. ”I’m on your side with that. I love a crowd, but it’s gotta be the right sort and that place isn’t it for me. You ever wanna go check out the competition, just me know, I’m always up for a little poking around.” One blue eye winked before Clea let out an ooooh. ”Not just competition for Campbell’s then. I imagine you’d have to beat the crowds off with a stick if you did that. People in town love any excuse to celebrate and we’ve got ourselves some talented musicians around. Do you play yourself?” Ah, music, another talent she was complete devoid of. That just left room for the others though, right?

Evangeline had grown up in a very different time, in her youth she had been raised as a princess and taught all about how she would be expected to rule her kingdom one day. She had always enjoyed helping those around her and she had often ended up sneaking out of the castle to help those who were less fortunate. Deep down she had known that one day she would have to marry so that her kingdom would be that much more secure but her life had been turned upside down the day her kingdom was attacked and her parents were killed. That day she had fought to protect her home and her people and she had ended up dying with Kol’s blood in her system. She had lost her connection to magic that day but she had always held onto the knowledge that had been instilled in her all those years before. Her life now was completely unrecognisable compared to the one that she once had but the truth was that Evangeline was still happy nonetheless and she knew that she really couldn’t ask for anything more than that. “I wish I could say I’m surprised but for some reason I’m not,” Evangeline teased, her smile playful as she looked over at Clea. There was just something about the woman that made her think that she was the kind of person who wouldn’t hesitate in making her feelings known but that definitely wasn’t a bad thing as far as Evangeline was concerned. She had grown up in a time when some people had thought that women were meant to be seen and not heard so she always respected someone who wouldn’t go quietly. “I hope so. I grew up in a place like that and I’ve missed it ever since I left,” she admitted. She could have stuck around and helped lead her kingdom after they had finished rebuilding but she had known that that wouldn’t do any of them any good. Her people had needed someone with magic to rule them and that wasn’t her any longer. Instead she had helped them rebuild as much as she could and she had made sure that they were settled before leaving and starting the next chapter of her life. Naturally being a vampire meant that she couldn’t stay anywhere as long as Clea had said but it was still nice to think about regardless. “If they try something like that again then I won’t hesitate,” Evangeline laughed. She wasn’t the kind of person who went looking for trouble but she wasn’t going to let anyone try and take advantage of her workers either. She wasn’t sure how things used to work at the Grill but she did things her own way and she always had done. Evangeline was used to people underestimating her due to her small size but they always regretted that when they realised exactly what she was capable of. As Clea offered to go to Campbells with her to check out the competition, Evangeline felt her smile return. “I’ll definitely take you up on that, it would be good to see what else the town has to offer,” she nodded. “Let me know when you’re free and we’ll make a night of it.” Evangeline already had her own plans in mind for the Grill but she knew that it wouldn’t hurt to see what the competition were doing as well. “I’ll have to keep that in mind then,” she grinned as Clea said she would have to beat the crowds off with the stick if she put on events like that. “I sing but it has been a while. How about you?”CLEA GIVENS
