Dead wife, not so dead wife. That was the way things went for Sara Shepard.
Much of what happened with Sara's death is included in Michael's history. Basically after 7 years of mostly happy marriage Sara and their daughter Abi were 'killed' by two men hired by the vampire Erik Orlov, who Michael had been unknowingly hunting through his work at the CIA. For three years Abi and Sara were at peace. They had no idea what was happening to Michael, that in trying to protect himself from one of the men who had killed the two of them Michael triggered the curse in his DNA (as Orlov had planned). They had no idea that Michael then went to work for Orlov and cut off all contact with his sister.
They also had no idea what had happened when they suddenly found themselves in an abandoned factory in Mystic Falls. Clothes, a phone, money were all left there. Sara managed to get herself and her daughter to the motel … and just one night in town for Abi to have gone from a 4 year old to a 16 year old. It was there at the motel that Michael and his family would find one another again. Tough conversations were had, memories false and real picked through until they were able to piece together what had happened. Neither one knows how Sara and Abi got back yet but with Michael’s sister Karin now in town it’s only a matter of time before they learn that in becoming a werewolf herself, Karin found a world containing those with the power to give her brother back the family he had lost (more details can be found in Karin’s ad below).
- Sara (nee Cooper) grew up in Hawaii and was studying physiotherapy at a college there before she and Michael met while Sara was on vacation in New Orleans.
- Once they met she transferred to a college in New Orleans to continue her studies and a year later the two were married. Two years later they were blessed with a little girl Abi.
- Their marriage was tight at first, the couple happy and very close to Michael's family who were still living in Baton Rouge at that time.
- When Abi was three their marriage began to grow some cracks. Michael's obsession with hunting what he called a shadow within the intelligence data coming out of Russia meant he was working far more late nights at the office and when he was home he wasn't himself. Sara called him on it and Michael tried to do better for the sake of their marriage and their daughter.
- Unfortunately not backing down from the investigation, even when he was warned to by his superiors put Sara and Abi at risk. First Michael's parents were supposedly killed in a car accident on a rainy night. Then when Michael still persisted two men were sent by Erik Orlov to Michael's house to kill his wife and daughter and trigger Michael's werewolf gene. That night he returned home to find the two men still in his home, standing over the bloody bodies of Sara and Abi. One man attacked Michael and to protect himself he killed him, thus triggering his werewolf side.
- Following their deaths Michael was a broken man ripe for the manipulations of the very shadow he'd been chasing. Erik Orlov approached Michael, offering him answers about his family, if he would come to work for him as a thief. Wanting to protect his sister Michael did just that. For a year he worked for Orlov without question ... until he ran into another thief. While he and Ana argued over something they were both at a gala to steal a third party stole the item. Determined to get it back Michael and Ana chased the man to Mystic Falls and Michael has remained there ever since, trying to get back on his feet and finally found out the truth about what happened to his family.
The face claim is semi-negotiable (I'll admit, I'm swayed by pretty gifs) as is the species. Abi would be an untriggered werewolf if her mother was human but her species is open too in case Sara was something other than human.

Abi would’ve been glad that her dad started spending more time with them again though because for a while he’d always been at the office.

Her and her parents have now been together in Mystic Falls for six months. Her dad filled in a lot of the blanks but not everything (Abi may have put together more than her parents believe though). She’s beginning to learn the town’s secrets and what she may end up being thanks to what was in her dad’s DNA. Mystic Falls definitely isn’t anything like New Orleans for Abi.

Karin’s early history is covered in Michael's history. She’s three years younger than her brother and grew up in Baton Rouge with him and their parents. They were very close knit and a very academic family. Her parents were both professors at Tulane. Sundays were always spent at home with dinner around the kitchen table and music filling the air as her, her brother and dad toyed with guitars and an old record player on the porch afterwards.
Like her parents and Michael Karin grew up doing well in school. Smart and well spoken she was always in AP classes but was one of those kids who was never smug about it. She was a part of the theatre clique, in the school band too. Her brother went to Tulance like her parents at 18, at 19 he moved into an apartment with some friends in New Orleans but Karin was never too bitter about it. She and Michael were always super close and it was his sister that Michael told first about that visit from the CIA. Karin pushed him to join and despite only being 18 she dragged Michael out to Bourbon Street the night before his first day at the Agency and before she started at Tulane (what Karin studied and what she has done since for work is up to the player – either sticking with the family theme of economics or being the break to that). With a fake ID Karin got into the bar with him and then after she headed home, more than a little drunk with the celebration, Michael met his wife Sara.
It didn’t take long for Karin to get close to her sister-in-law and when Abi came along just a few years later, right when she was graduating from college, their family seemed complete. Just a few months before death came to visit her Abi and Sarah her parents were killed. A rainy night and a slip off of a bridge took them both in an instant. As a family Karin came together with Michael, his wife and daughter to grieve. Karin doted on her niece and was close to her sister-in-law right up until the night both Sara and Abi were killed. Unaware of what her brother had gotten himself into Karin believed that the family had just been the victims of a botched robbery until Michael began to cut himself off from her after the funeral.
At first she thought it was grief but then Michael left town and Karin was swamped by doubts. What if her brother had been right about what had happened? While she desperately waited for the phone to ring to tell her that he was safe she started to poke around in the less touristy parts of New Orleans. It would be this attempt at investigating that would leave Karin triggering her own curse. How this happens is up to the player but at some point in the next year Karin manages to take somebody’s life and is herself turned into a werewolf. Instead of shying away from it like her brother she’s learned enough in her digging to find someone to help her. Karin ends up a part of the supernatural scene in New Orleans. It is there that she learns there’s a way to get her brother his family back. Witchcraft is all but forbidden in New Orleans but Karin gets close enough to a warlock there to learn that there’s a way for them to be resurrected.
Her friend couldn’t get out of the city to perform the spell, not without being noticed but he knew people outside of the city who were powerful enough to perform the spell. Karin left the city to meet with those people, using her blood they were able to trace her brother to a town called Mystic Falls.
