The truth had torn something open inside of him for a time. A place long sealed within him by Esther suddenly spewing forth all he had hidden away. At the time it had been an agony but now Elijah see that it had all been worth it. For centuries his family had been shackled by their pain, held back by those truths they would not allow themselves to see. It was easier for it to be blamed on one another, the vow they had made to one another when they were staring down at eternal life together a curse rather than the blessing it could’ve been. They had steeped this town in blood then and now to break the hold their parents had placed over them with the spell Esther had used in desperation but now was their chance to finally escape it and start to live in the way they hadn’t been allowed to since the night Henrik had been killed by the wolves, perhaps even the day Dahlia had taken Freya.
A chance. It was all they needed to finally cast off that pall.
This might not have been much of one but it was living. Those little milestones they would perhaps have sailed through if they had been born in this century and not more than ten before. Elijah hummed against her hand, velveteen eyes rolling up to meet hers. ”I still trust you not to take advantage,” he murmured. Out of all of them he trusted her with that the most. His own siblings taking advantage as often as he had unfortunately done to them too.
Those dark eyes had swept the dancers for some sign of his sister when they had stepped out onto the floor but there had been no sign of Rebekah. Elijah worked his way close as they danced, lips touching her brow, her cheek, and then brushing Tatia’s ear as he let his voice rumble out low. A smile brushed the tender flesh. ”You’re the only one capable of talking me into such things.” The one who had looked past all he had done and had forgiven. Elijah let Tatia hook his chin, his eyes fluttering shut as he kissed her back, tenderly, slowly, his lips still brushing hers when he found his voice again. ”I love you too. I always have done.” Centuries had passed and nobody had ever taken the place of his first love in that hidden part of his heart. Now it was free to be out in the open, visible, it seemed, for all around them to see and not an ounce of shame in him about it.
The music played on, leaving the two of them turning slowly on the dance floor. Hands anchoring her to him, fingers trailing at her waist as they moved in time with it. He saw her face light up at the idea of a photo of the two of them. A lasting reminder of one uninterrupted evening. ”We’ll get one, as soon as you’re tired of dancing,” he promised. He saw Tatia’s eyes settle on someone in the crowd, then finally found his sister among the other dancers. He had been unsure about Rebekah’s relationship with the boy, his sister’s love life always seeming to end in tragedy. ”They do. Perhaps we can convince them to join us later?” For now he was happy to just dip his head, to skim his lips over Tatia’s neck as the music wrapped around them again.

Before she died, Tatia had never really given much thought to trying to make the most out of life. She had found herself as a single mother while she was still a child herself and even though she didn’t regret refusing to throw herself onto her husband’s funeral pyre and choosing to raise her son instead she had missed out on being a child for a little longer. She had never wanted Lukas to go through the same thing so she’d tried to make sure that his life was full of fun and laughter and she had done her best to make sure that he had everything that he needed. His happiness had come before her own and Tatia knew that that was as it should have been but she couldn’t deny that it was nice to be able to do something now because she wanted to do it. She and Elijah had spent a lot of time together back then but they’d always had to be so careful because there were certain traditions to uphold. They didn’t have to worry about any of that now, things were much more relaxed and they were able to do as they pleased without having to worry about any judgement from others and she knew that things were much better now. She still regretted that she hadn’t been there to finish raising her son but she could be there for him now and she could also enjoy this new life that she had been given and she intended on making the most of it. Going to prom might not seem like the most exciting thing in the world to some and she knew that Elijah probably couldn’t think of anything worse but he’d still decided to indulge her and she was grateful to him for that. She had given him the chance to back out and she’d refused so with his blessing given they were free to enjoy their evening. As Elijah said that he trusted her not to take advantage of what he’d said, Tatia felt a smile form on her face. “You know I never would,” she assured him gently. Even when Elijah agreed to do something she usually gave him the chance to back out in case it wasn’t something that he was really comfortable doing. Tatia knew that she would never force him into doing anything, that wasn’t who she was and it never had been, but she did like the idea of bring him out of his comfort zone every now and then and that was definitely something that she was doing that day. A pleasant shiver ran down her spine as Elijah’s lips touched her brow followed by her cheek and then her ear. His touch was always so gentle and she loved it. “I’ll take that as a compliment,” Tatia said, a smile touching her lips as her eyes met his. Elijah never seemed to take much persuasion, not when it came to something that she really wanted to do, but it did mean the world to her that he had decided to go with her. As Elijah kissed her back, Tatia brought her hand up and let it rest lightly against his cheek. “I know,” she said, her expression gentle as he said that he’d always loved her. “I wanted you to be happy but I’m not going to lie, I’m so happy we got this chance to be together again.” She knew that she wouldn’t have blamed Elijah for moving on, after all that was what she had wanted for him, and she knew that he had been with others in the past but fate had brought them back together again and she knew that she was always going to be grateful for this chance that they had been given. Dancing with Elijah like this it was easy to forget about everything that had happened in the past and she nodded as he said that they would get a photo as soon as she was tired of dancing. “That sounds great although I don’t think I’ll ever get tired of being in your arms like this,” she admitted. She felt safe in Elijah’s arms and she felt loved so right now she had no reason to want to be anywhere else. Soon enough her gaze came to rest on Rebekah and Matt but before Tatia could respond to Elijah’s question a sigh escaped her as Elijah’s lips brushed over her neck. “I’m sure we could, it will be good to catch up,” she said at last. “Does that mean you’ve finally come around to the idea of the two of them?” she asked, knowing how protective Elijah was of his sister. The trust that had once existed between them could’ve been gone. Shattered by what he’d done, the pieces cast to the wind when he had been the one to find Tatia here. Those shards had cut deep but now, as they danced here, Elijah couldn’t even feel the scars of where they had pierced him. Not hidden away, as Esther had once had him do, those wounds still bleeding behind closed doors, even if he couldn’t acknowledge the blood staining his hands, but gone, healed. Tatia had done that, her forgiveness erasing his crimes. His hands still weren’t clean, but they were well on the way to being that way.
One settled at the small of Tatia’s back, leading her in that slow spin, the other eventually finding its way up her back, cradling the angle of her jaw as he trailed his lips over the face that had been etched in his memory for a thousand years, haunting him, bringing him that strength to open his heart again before Katerina had forced him to slam it shut again until Tatia had returned. ”I know,” he promised, his voice a murmur against her skin. Elijah felt that warmth in his chest as he trailed his lips to her cheek, her ear. They curved there for a moment before he drew back far enough to catch her smile and offer a small one in return. ”As it was meant to be,” he promised. He could have navigated this world for another thousand years in the way he had but under Tatia’s guidance he’d moved out of that stream he would’ve been caught in, navigating his way into another that might’ve passed him by.
He could thank her for it a thousand times but they weren’t the words slipping from his lips now. It was those that went deeper, that had been true for that thousand years, regardless of the circumstances. Elijah’s brows drew together faintly, his cheek pressing into her touch for a moment. He had been at times but it had never been like it had been. ”I am too. For so long I believed our family was damned by Esther’s actions but this is proof that perhaps we are not.” Nature could still abhor them but for every curse wrought upon them in this town as much was given back to them. Tatia, Henrik, Hope, Connor and Alice. Blessings, gifts to be held on to through whatever storms were to come.
For now they were just dark smudges on the horizon, not to picked over and worried about tonight. They would have every possible prom experience here and as they returned to his apartment later, Elijah would make it clear he hadn’t suffered a moment through it. Even if there were still whoops in the crowd behind him. He swayed close with Tatia, a rumble of agreement in his chest as he trailed his fingers in a circle at the small of her back. ”At some point they’ll turn the lights on and chase us out,” he warned, his voice lined with humour. Some might try and linger, his sister and Matt amongst them. This was as precious to Rebekah, it seemed, as it was to Tatia. Elijah dipped his head slightly, his smile dimpling at the corners. ”It’s about time I did. Rebekah lost as much as all of us in those years, if not more. If this can make her happy, then we can accept the boy. We all deserve to be as happy as I am now. As we are.” With that Elijah pressed his lips to Tatia’s again and lost himself in the kiss. In the night. Tonight nothing could cast a shadow over this room, what shone here was simply too bright.
