Tatia liked to think that she had grown used to the way things were now but the truth was that there were still certain things that she had yet to experience. She had originally enrolled herself in the local high school as a way of avoiding any awkward questions about why she and Elena looked so alike and so that they could sell the idea of them being twins but she had actually come to enjoy it and that wasn't something that she had expected at all. She never would have had the chance to do something like that before she died so she had been doing her best to make the most of it while it lasted. Now graduation was fast approaching and Tatia wasn't sure what she was going to do next or whether she would end up joining the others in going to college but she still had a little time left to decide and for that she was grateful. She had her friends around her still and she was confident that she would no matter what she decided so she knew that everything would sort itself out in the end. Right now there was something that she really wanted to experience before her time at high school came to an end and that was going to the prom with her friends. She had never even heard of such a thing before but the girls had explained it to her and for some reason she had instantly found herself starting to feel quite excited about it. It was so different to anything that she could have gone to before she was alive and she couldn’t deny that the idea of being able to dress up for an evening and have some fun surrounded by a group of people that had become family to her over the last two years really wasn’t something that she wanted to miss out on. She wasn’t entirely sure how Elijah really felt about going with her but he had agreed and for that she was grateful. She was pretty sure that he was just doing so in order to indulge her but she certainly wasn’t going to argue. She knew that he had been to events much grander than this in the past and the thought of a high school dance probably wouldn’t mean much to him, if anything at all, but it meant a lot to her so she was glad that he had seen that and hadn’t seemed to mind accompanying her for the evening. It had taken her a while to find a dress she liked but eventually she had settled on one. She had never really favoured pink too much, the colour a little too different to anything that had been around before she had died, but this one had called out to her and she hoped that Elijah would like it. Zipping up the back of the dress, Tatia fixed her hair and makeup before sitting on the side of the bed to pull on her shoes and it was then that her gaze came to rest on the figure standing in the doorway and she felt a smile touch her lips. “You know, I was half expecting you to change your mind about going with me tonight,” she admitted, pulling on her shoes before crossing the room and coming to a stop in front of Elijah. Being surrounded by a group of high school students for the evening was probably the last thing he wanted to do. “Are you sure you don’t mind doing this?” she asked, her eyes locked on his as she spoke. “I won’t hold it against you if you want to skip it.”ELIJAH MIKAELSON

A man could live a thousand years but there were still things he had not experienced. It wasn’t that the world was too big a place, all those years had let him travel from one end of it to the other and see things most were never privileged to, it was more that no matter how long someone lived there would always be things to surprise them. The world changed, the people in it did too until something out there decided to bring lives around full circle, until the past came to meet the present. There had been moments since he had first found Tatia out on the road that Elijah had almost felt as though his life here in the past was overlaid with his life here in the present but there were differences, some small enough to almost be an echo, others great enough to be life changing. There would certainly not have been an evening like tonight then. Formal schooling for the masses had not really existed until the nineteenth century but even then such things as balls and proms hadn’t existed as a rite of passage in quite this way. Cotillions, balls in high society, secretive little supper parties, yes, and he attended them hundreds of times over the years, but standing in the doorway of Tatia’s bedroom at the Boarding House, a room he had come to know quite well, Elijah knew that none of them had ever been like this.
None had been ever been like her.
Tatia’s death at his hands might have been wiped from his mind by his mother, sealed up behind a mental wall it had taken her resurrection to bring down but Tatia had always been in his heart. That love was why he was standing here now, fully prepared to accompany her to the dance at the school, amongst those a thousand years younger than him. Perhaps there’d been some doubt in her mind that he would agree but for her he would have done anything. As a bonus he would see his own sister there, finally reveling in something that had long been denied to her too. Elijah propped a shoulder against the doorframe, watching Tatia settle on the side of the bed to slip her shoes on. His smile rose in return as Tatia caught sight of him. ”Perhaps before I saw the dress I might have done,” he teased. ”Now, there’s no way I’m backing out. You look incredible.” The teasing dropped away on the last few words, a rawness entering his voice as he lifted a hand to let the backs of his fingers ghost over the tumbling brunette locks. Looking down at her, Elijah let his smile grow crooked and shook his head. ”I know what this means to you and honestly, I don’t mind. You don’t think I’m up to a night of burning up the dance floor and making conversation with teenagers?” He pretended to inject a little shock in his voice but Elijah knew that wasn’t the reason. A thousand years since he’d been a teenager himself, this could’ve been awkward for him if he was determined to make it work for her.

During the time that Tatia had been born into the idea of dressing up and going to a dance would have seemed like nothing more than a dream. Her village had held certain events over the years but nothing like this and if she was honest she was looking forward to being able to go to her high school prom and being surrounded by all of her friends. She had never thought that any of that would be possible when she first ran into Elijah at the side of the road after she was brought back to life over a thousand years after she died but her life had changed completely and as far as she was concerned that was a good thing. Not only did she still have Elijah in her life but she still had Lukas as well and there were plenty of new friends that she had made along the way. This wasn’t how she had ever thought that her life would end up but she had been given not just a second chance at life but a third as well and she knew better than to waste it. While there were probably certain people who might not necessarily have understood why she had enrolled herself in high school it had been the easiest way to blend in and pass herself off as Elena’s long lost twin and it had given her the chance to get to know the world that she now lived in that much better. She hadn’t quite made up her mind as to what she was going to do after graduation just yet but she had time to figure that out and for now she just wanted to have some fun with Elijah and her friends. If she was honest she had half expected him to change his mind about going with her or have refused to do so in the first place but he hadn’t. He had agreed to go with her and the smile on his face as her eyes met his while she slipped on her shoes was enough to make her smile back at him in return. “I’m glad you approve,” Tatia admitted, her smile widening as his hand moved over her hair. Picking out a dress for the occasion hadn’t been easy but she was happy with the one that she had chosen so she was glad that Elijah seemed to be as well. “You look really handsome,” she added as her eyes swept over him. Elijah had always been a striking man but that evening he seemed even more so and as she pulled on her other shoe she couldn’t resist getting to her feet and drawing him in for a kiss. There were still times even now when he seemed incredible to her that they had been given another chance but she loved Elijah and she knew that she wasn’t going to waste it. As he spoke again she couldn’t help but laugh. “I know you can do it but I wasn’t sure if you would want to,” she grinned. “If it’s any consolation I think a lot of people are going to be jealous that I’m there with you tonight,” she added, her tone light and teasing although there was still truth to her words. Elijah was sure to turn more than a few heads that evening but she trusted him completely so she knew that it wouldn’t matter. Grabbing her purse from the bed she turned back to face him. “Shall we head out?” she asked, knowing that Stefan had already left to go and pick up Elena. ELIJAH MIKAELSON

Feeling awkward was not a sensation he particularly enjoyed but it was one you couldn’t escape, even as an immortal being. As you grew from teen years where it was practically permanent to adulthood, you learned to cope, to turn it into something else. You could never rid yourself of it entirely but, Elijah thought as he watched Tatia slip on her shoes, you could damp it down when it threatened to rise. A high school gym full of teenagers was never something he’d expected to wade into, not unless Niklaus or Kol had taken it upon themselves to recreate Carrie but no matter how awkward it could leave him feeling he would tolerate it tonight. When she had returned Tatia had taken it upon herself to act as Elena’s long lost twin sister. An explanation that had made it easier for the two of them to coexist in the town and an opportunity for her to learn all that she had missed out upon. Elijah knew that he could’ve backed out of the dance without her holding ill feelings towards him but if all it took was him damping down those feelings of being out of his depth for a few hours he could allow Tatia the sort of evening that she never would’ve been able to enjoy had things been different between them a thousand years ago. This was probably going to be far less comfortable than giving her the gift of eternal life that she had asked him for, although time was the only thing that was going to tell here. At least there would be others there he knew, Stefan, Bonnie, Caroline, Elena, even his own sister if she decided to indulge herself.
Any one of the boys she’d had shared classes with throughout the year would’ve been proud to walk in with Tatia on his arm but there was no chance of it today. For a thousand years her heart had belonged to another and he was absolutely unwilling to share. Wry humour twisted Elijah’s smile as he gave a little bow of his head. ”I would have approved of anything you chose to wear. Whatever you put on, you always take my breath away.” One glance at that smile, the feel of those dark locks slipping around his fingers, waking up to the weight of Tatia at his side, it was always like reopening that part of himself that had been walled off for so long. ”Thank you,” the words slipped easily from him, dark eyes glancing down at his own outfit for a moment. ”I couldn’t let you attend with a hobo on your arm.” Not that would ever be possible, for centuries his clothing had been a reflection of the locked down man within. Those barriers had begun to crumble on the day he’d found Tatia out on the road. Hearing her laugh, he tilted his head back and forth. ”For almost anybody else I wouldn’t have done but you have always been special.” This time she had him laughing, the sound bright as he took let his hand slide down her arm. ”I somehow doubt that.” The vanity simply wasn’t there in him to believe it. Elijah stepped back as Tatia retrieved her purse, offering her his arm as she returned to his side. ”I’m ready,” he confirmed, leading the way towards the door. ”I imagine the place will already be heaving.” Nobody wanted to be the first to arrive but on a night like this the excitement would always be high.

Tatia hadn’t known what the other students had school had been talking about when the gossiping about prom had started but Stefan had explained it to her when they had returned home to the Boarding House that same day and ever since then she had found herself looking forward to it. She had hoped that Elijah would agree to go with her but even if he hadn’t wanted to then she knew that she wouldn’t have held it against him but she also wouldn’t have missed it for the world. She knew that she probably could have tagged along with some of her friends if she’d had to but as it was Elijah had agreed to go with her and she couldn’t deny that she was pleased without that. She knew that dressing up was something that he did all the time anyway but this time was different. This time she knew that he would be doing so for her as opposed to out of habit and she couldn’t deny that she was pleased. Elijah had always been dashing even before the styles had changed but every time she saw him it made her catch her breath. She knew she was incredibly lucky that he had opened his heart to her again and she also knew that she was lucky that no one else had truly captured his heart during the time that had followed her death. She knew that there had been others that had caught his attention but from the moment she woke up in the woods outside of Mystic Falls their love story had restarted and she knew that she wouldn’t have it any other way. Her husband had died in battle leaving her to raise their young son alone and endure the looks the others in their village gave her when she refused to follow him onto the funeral pyre for Lukas’ sake but she knew that she was a very different person to the one that she had been. She was still capable of looking out for herself but she also wanted to enjoy everything that life had to offer and that included going to a high school dance with the man she loved. “You have the same effect on me,” Tatia admitted, a smile touching her lips as she looked over at him. It had taken her a while to come to terms with what had happened when she died but she truly did love Elijah and in time she had come to realise that what had happened wasn’t his fault. He had changed a lot over the years and she knew that he had seen and done some awful things but he was still the man that had made her open her heart again after her husband died and she had fallen in love with him all over again, only this time with the man that he had become. It didn’t matter to her that they were different right now as the decision was already made that once the school year was over she would become a vampire like him and even though it was a big decision to make she knew that it was worth it so that she could stay with Lukas, Elijah, the Salvatores and everyone else that she had come to think of as her family without having to worry about them losing her again one day. “You couldn’t look like one even if you tried,” Tatia grinned, knowing that Elijah would still stand out and look handsome no matter what. It was unfair really but she knew that it was just his way. “In that case I’m honoured,” she said, wrapping her arms around his neck and pressing a kiss to his lips as a thank you. “I know it’s true. I’ve seen the way the girls look at you whenever you drop me off at school,” she corrected, letting her lips brush against his as she spoke. More than a few had looked like they couldn’t understand why he was with her but they didn’t know of the history that the two of them shared so she knew that they would never understand the connection between them. “I wouldn’t be surprised. Caroline has put a lot of effort into tonight,” she nodded as they headed outside towards the car. The drive there wasn’t a short one but it seemed to go by quite quickly and before Tatia knew it they were pulling into a space in the parking lot. “Last chance to back out,” she offered, knowing that she wouldn’t force him to go inside if he had changed his mind. As a human deadening emotions entirely was almost impossible. They radiated from every cell in your body, bubbling to the surface for everybody to see if you weren’t skilled enough to bury them beneath the surface. As a vampire there was the innate ability to flip the switch and deaden it all. To white them all out and obliterate guilt, anger, frustration … pain. He could have done it centuries ago, removed the urge to care for his siblings, to give a damn about humanity. Elijah had never brought himself to do it though. He had hidden his heart, buried his ability to love another for centuries. There were very few things he had to thank Katerina for, but her unlocking that part of him again was one. It had made her turning all the more painful but it had seeded the ground for what was to come. It had left him able to love and to forgive himself when Tatia had revealed his most heinous crime to him. It left him anxious now but the butterflies that had taken flight in his stomach as he had dressed that evening were a good sign. As was the blush that rose faintly to his face at Tatia’s compliment now. He was able to feel, deeply, painfully, wonderfully, all thanks to the woman before him now. Elijah knew there was a great deal of luck to that, to their finding one another again. Perhaps there had been a nudge from whoever had brought her back but it had taken luck for the pieces to fall into place as they had now and he would be forever grateful to that.
At Tatia’s compliment, Elijah smiled, a faint shyness to the expression. With her the weight of the last thousand years had a tendency to melt away and leave behind the young man he had been before all of the tragedy in their lives. ”I am glad I can still make you swoon,” Elijah crooned softly. There’d been a time when the fear in her eyes had torn at the very heart of him. Snorting lightly as she assured him he could never pull off the hobo look, Elijah shook his head. ”It would surprise you how scruffy I can get,” he teased. The truth was the voice in his head rarely allowed it. A little less formal, yes, but anything more and Esther’s voice echoed and rolled. It was one of his ways of clinging to his humanity and in a thousand years he had never let go of that. Elijah’s lips curved under hers. He slid his arms around her waist as his hands trailed down, bashfulness touching his cheeks with colour again. ”They can find their own thousand year old dates,” he murmured. If any of the girls honestly had a clue who was in the car when he dropped her off their reactions might be very different. Few realized just who was walking amongst them, who would be at the dance tonight. Werewolves, witches, warlocks and vampires to say the very least. Knowing some of them through Tatia and the rest Elijah imagined that Caroline had run tonight like a military operation. ”That’s a guaranteed sign of success,” he said with a grin as he helped her into the car. The ride was a fast one, the sleek car gliding through town until it ended up in the school parking lot, surrounded by vehicles borrowed for the night from parents and the less glossy specimens owned by the teens. As the engine shut off Elijah glanced aside at Tatia and shook his head slowly. ”No backing out,” he promised. He slipped out of the car, rounding to her side to open her door and offer Tatia his arm. ”Would you do me the honour of accompanying me inside?” he asked smoothly. Chivalry certainly wasn’t dead.

Getting dressed up and going to an event like this wasn’t something that would have happened back when the two of them were born and the closest they would have come was the festival that they had shared their first kiss at. Back then Tatia hadn’t thought that something like this would be possible but she knew that Elijah had been to more than a few balls over the years. Their lives couldn’t have ended up any more different but the truth was that it didn’t matter to Tatia as much as it once had. Ever since she had asked Elijah to turn her after graduation and he had told her that he had asked Henrik to look into a way to make her an Original like him she had been feeling like they were on much more even footing and the truth was that she was happy despite the fact that her life was going to change forever in just a few weeks. Right now they had time before that though and she knew that she wanted to make the most of it while it lasted. She knew that this wasn’t necessarily the kind of thing that Elijah would normally go to but she wanted to get the full high school experience so she was glad that he was indulging her nonetheless. Had she needed to then she knew that she would have gone on her own and just had some fun with her friends but she knew that it was going to be much better with Elijah there since all of the others had dates and it was a night she knew could turn out to be really special so she was glad that he had agreed to go with her. She had still felt like it was important to give him the chance to back out but he didn’t seem to want to do that and he had certainly dressed to impress. She knew that there were sure to be plenty of people at the school that night who didn’t know about her past and probably wouldn’t understand what someone like Elijah was doing with her but the truth was that whenever she looked at him she often still saw the man she had fallen in love with all those years ago and the fact that his appearance had changed really didn’t matter to her one bit. He was still just as handsome as ever, perhaps even more so, and she knew that there were sure to be more than a few people that night who were jealous of the fact that he was there with her. “You always do,” she said, a smile working its way across her face as she stole a kiss. There was a time when she had felt scared of him after learning what had happened when she died but those days were long behind them now. She knew that Elijah was still the man she loved and he had been proving it to her every day since then so she knew better than to hold his past mistakes against him. “I don’t believe that for a minute,” she laughed, knowing that there was no way he would ever go for the full on scruffy look. She was so used to seeing Elijah wearing his suits now that it was hard to picture him in anything else. Tatia’s smile returned as Elijah slid his arms around her waist and she nodded as he spoke. “You’ve got that right,” she agreed. It didn’t take them long to reach the school and after giving him one last chance to back out if he wanted to, Tatia took Elijah’s arm and climbed out of the car. “Of course,” she said as she closed the door behind her and led the way through the school to the gym where everything had been set up. “Caroline really has done an amazing job with all of this, I almost don’t recognise the place.”ELIJAH MIKAELSON

Returning to Mystic Falls to prevent another doppelganger from falling victim to his brother had been a painful homecoming of its own. Finding Tatia on the road, learning that he had been the one to steal her life in the first place had been harder still. For so long he had blamed himself for it, the guilt riding heavily on Elijah’s shoulders until she had forgiven him. The hunger nature had placed as its cost upon them had stolen so much from so many but he’d never felt it as much as he had done the loss of Tatia. Driven by it for a thousand years only to find himself coming full circle. It had taken time to grow used to, to settle back into this life with her. Some, Elijah knew, still looked at the time of them with raised brows. The high school girl with the elegantly tailored man. It was different in these times and he was certain more than a few eyes would be on them tonight. They would see a man a handful of years older them all, not the vampire who had more than a thousand years on them. Elijah knew that was why Tatia had offered him an out for this evening but he wasn’t about to take it. Those thousand years ago he had unintentionally cost her the life that she should’ve had, he’d cost Lucas his mother for all of those centuries and Elijah didn’t want to cost her anything again. If it was within his ability to give her the life she should’ve had then now then he would do it. Perhaps not entirely happy when it came to tonight’s situation but he would do it all the time.
It couldn’t be that bad with her by his side. All eyes would be on her in that dress anyway. His own were now, his heart aching familiarly in his chest as the two of them prepared to leave for the school. For the second time in a thousand years she had chosen him and nothing would prevent them from having their lifetime together now, an exceptionally long lifetime. A bashful smile tugged at Elijah’s lips as Tatia stole the kiss from him. ”Tonight more than ever other I’ll make sure to have it happen often,” he crooned lightly. The clothes were a little more special than his usual tailored suits. There were times though … when he stretched his mother’s instructions to the limit, denim even daring to enter his closet. ”one day I’ll have to try it just to prove it.” It would irritate him continually but he was fairly sure he could tolerate it, for a short time at least. Pushing the thought aside he had gathered her close. Elijah lifted his chin slightly, touching his lips to Tatia’s forehead before they left for the school. Forcing the faintly awkward feeling from under his skin Elijah took Tatia’s arm as they headed into the school. Dark eyes rose as they walked into what was usually a dingy gym, his lips curving into a smile as they drew to a stop. ”It’s certainly no longer how I remembered it,” he murmured. Elijah shook his head slightly as he turned around. ”Caroline has a real talent. I’m sure she’d be greatly disappointed if we were to waste a moment of it.” Dark lashes screened his eyes as Elijah glanced over Tatia’s shoulder towards the dance floor just behind her. Without warning he slid an arm around her waist, letting his fingers trail down to take hers before he span her slowly out there.

Tatia had heard her classmates talking about prom a lot over the last few weeks and if she was honest seeing how excited they were all getting about the event had started to make her feel excited about it in return. She wouldn’t have blamed Elijah if he hadn’t wanted to join her, after all she knew that being surrounded by a group of teenagers for the evening wasn’t going to be his idea of fun, but for her she had been working hard to make it through her last year at high school and she wanted to mark the occasion by being able to have some fun with her friends. Had he decided that he didn’t want to go then Tatia knew that she would have gone on her own and simply spent some time catching up with those around her but she knew that it would have been awkward if she had since her friends all had dates for the evening. Elena and Stefan were going together and so were Bonnie and Scott while Ben was going with Claire, Danny and Riley were going together and even Dec and Caroline had arranged to go together. For the first time in a while, things finally seemed to be going well for all of them and she knew that she wanted it to stay that way. There always seemed to be something going on in Mystic Falls and soon enough she and her friends were all going to be faced with the decision of whether or not to go to college but when that happened they could well end up going their separate ways so she knew that it was important to have one night of fun altogether before that happened. Dressing up like this wasn’t something that Tatia had ever done considering that things were so different before she died but it was her first chance to do so and she knew that she wanted to make the most of it while it lasted. She could have skipped the event altogether but she knew that she would have regretted it if she had done so as far as she was concerned that just wasn’t an option and it meant a lot to her that Elijah had agreed to go with her. Seeing him in a suit was something that she had grown used to after she was brought back but this time seemed different and if the smile that he gave her was anything to go by then he felt it too. “Something tells me that won’t be a problem,” she said, a smile working its way across her face in return as her eyes met his. As he spoke again, she couldn’t help but laugh. “Now that I would like to see,” she said, her smile widening as she looked over at him. It wasn’t very often at all that she got to see Elijah looking truly relaxed and she knew that it was a side of him that she would love to see when the opportunity presented itself. Heading into the school with Elijah by her side, Tatia let her gaze take in their surroundings as they reached the gym. She was so used to seeing it the way it normally but this was completely different and she couldn’t deny that the transformation was incredible. “I never thought it could look like this,” she admitted, looking around them for a minute longer before turning her attention back to Elijah. “I think you might be right,” she said, her smile returning before a laugh escaped her lips as Elijah spun her out onto the dance floor. Once there she took a step closer to him and wrapped her arms around his neck. “You really are full of surprises tonight, aren’t you?” she asked, unable to deny that she was feeling genuinely happy as she pressed her lips against his. Integration hadn’t always come easily. Just a few short years after they had been forced to run from Mikael they had been struggling. Searching for a place to remain hidden for a time, finding one that would start to lead them down a path that had only grown darker for a time. They had been able to disguise what they were but it had come with a cost for the de Martels. They had sent them on the run in their stead, allowing them to lead Mikael a merry chase while they had moved on. With each new generation came another twist though, one they always seemed able to work their way through but the old adage was right and always would be. Some things never changed. After a thousand years of heartbreak Rebekah still had not given up on love, Kol still mourned the loss of the magic that was their birthright and Niklaus still had a painter’s eye, one he indulged in from time to time. He … Elijah knew that the one enduring characteristic he’d carried with him, other than his constant need to play peacemaker for his siblings, was the last thing Esther had ever instilled in him. Elijah Mikaelson, the diplomat, the fashionista. Taught to stay clean, not to remember the blood that had stained his hands just as it had his siblings’. The words pushed from his mind until Tatia’s resurrection had brought it all rushing back. Elijah knew that he could’ve rebelled against the thought as the memory returned, refused to hold on to his mother’s teachings but it was one thing that had not changed. A part of him so deeply ingrained now that just the thought of acid washed blue jeans and sweater-vests were enough to send a shudder down his spine.
For her he would’ve tolerated it, if necessary but tonight wasn’t about cracking that fastidious exterior, it was about reveling in it, giving Tatia the experience that every other high school girl spent four years hoping for. None of them would be attending with a thousand year old vampire tonight but each would’ve driven themselves almost neurotic with all of this pageantry. Elijah’s mouth remained curled at one corner, a little hint of pride there with the ruefulness. ”Never,” he drawled lightly. He let out a sigh, dipping his head slightly. ”Now it seems I’ve made a rod for my own back.” One he would gratefully bear for her. Tonight was about giving Tatia what she desired and that meant putting up with a gym full of high school students. The thought had been almost enough to induce a shudder but as they arrived at the gym and found it vastly transformed Elijah knew that perhaps it wouldn’t be such a torment after all. Under the tiny lights that seemed to have taken the place of the industrial fixtures that usually left the space so starkly lit, Elijah turned a slow circle to admire it. ”I would’ve suggested it was magic but unless Ms. Bennett had more of an influence than I’d realise, it’s certainly not that in the traditional sense.” Caroline had worked wonders though and even now was likely lurking in the crowds, ready to chide people into getting out on the dance floor or trying the punch. They wouldn’t disappoint. Elijah smoothly spun the two of them out onto the dance floor, gathering Tatia back close to him, her arms finding their way around his neck as they swayed slowly to the music. ”It seemed the time for them,” he murmured, splaying a hand on the small of Tatia’s back as she kissed him. ”Is it all you’d hoped for?” he asked huskily, drawing back only a hair’s breadth. He could feel the brush of Tatia’s lips against his own as he spoke, the rest of the room dimming away for a moment.

Tatia hadn’t given too much thought to prom when the other girls had suggested it but the truth was that the more she had heard about it the more she had wanted to go. Soon enough they would all be graduating and even though most of them were going on to Whitmore there were still a few that had yet to decide what they wanted to do with their lives after high school came to an end so in a way this was one of the last chances they were going to have to celebrate together before the next chapter of their lives began. For Tatia it meant something even more as she had decided that she wanted Elijah to turn her after graduation. It meant that her days as a human were numbers and she knew that she wanted to enjoy everything that she could during that time. She didn’t regret her decision, after all Lukas, Elijah and most of the other people that she loved were immortal and she knew that it wouldn’t be fair to let them watch her grow old and die one day. She had already left them twice, first when she died after Elijah and his siblings became vampires and again when she made Nik use her in the ritual instead of Elena. The second time it had at least been her choice and had she decided to stay human and continue to age she didn’t doubt that the people she cared about would support her but if she was honest the thought of something taking her away from them all one day terrified her so it was something that she wanted to do for them and for her so that she wouldn’t need to worry about that. For now she just wanted to have a nice night with the man she loved, though, and she was still grateful to Elijah for agreeing to go with her. She knew that the last thing he probably wanted was to be in a room full of teenagers but he had said that he would go with her and he had kept his word so she knew that she was going to have to find a way to repay him sooner or later. “You really have,” she teased, a smile working its way across her face as she looked over at him. She could still remember the Elijah that she had known before she died and that man was a far cry from the man that he had become as far as his appearance went. His face was still the same but he was always so formal now although she knew that she was never going to get tired of seeing him in a suit. “Maybe not but it’s a kind of magic all on its own,” Tatia admitted as she looked around them and couldn’t help but admire everything that Caroline and the others had done. “It’s perfect,” she said, her smile returning as she turned her attention back to Elijah. She knew that there might end up being a few people there that evening who would end up giving them some surprised looks given that most people didn’t know their history together and probably wouldn’t understand what someone like Elijah was doing with her but him being there meant the world to her and she knew that she wanted to make the most of it. A laugh escaped Tatia’s lips as Elijah spun them out onto the floor before pulling her to him and she wrapped her arms around his neck as they began to dance. “It is, thanks to you,” she nodded as Elijah asked if it was everything that she had hoped for. “Thank you for being here,” she said sincerely, nothing but love for him in her eyes as they met his. The moment he had been sure he was in love with Tatia had been a night not so unlike this one. It had been under the open air of course, the lights overhead, that gilded her bronzed skin had been from the moon, the torches that burned around their village, rather than from the small lights set in the rafters of the gym. The scent of smoke from the bonfires had been on the air, eddying as the rhythm of music had pulsed along with it. Very different music, something from another millennium entirely. Bodies had wreathed around one another, eyes meeting in that eternal sort of dance. It would not have been the done thing to move together as closely as the teenagers were already here but it hadn’t stopped that intimacy that had passed between the two of them. Tatia’s dark eyes on his, glittering with barely contained humour, her lips curving into a smile that could make his still boyish heart race in his chest, cheeks pink with the exertion.
Looking around the hall Elijah wondered how many young men would be in those same first throws of love tonight. Would they remember it should they live a thousand years? Perhaps not. Their circumstances were so far from the usual after all. Barring Rebekah he may have been the only thousand year old vampire here tonight. The thought had him sighing with a soft humour as he glanced back at Tatia. ”It’s one I shall have to learn to bear,” he murmured low. Better that than the alternative, a pain he’d already suffered through twice. Magic had brought her back that second time, weaving its way through both of their lives. The real sort of magic, not the ephemeral sort that seemed to have gone on here. Elijah made a low sound in his throat all the same, dark eyes roving around them again. ”It seems it is,” he agreed. The teenagers here would probably remember that much in the years to come at least. The rest of high school would either stick with them in painful detail or drift away like smoke.
His own existence had been like that. The moments of painfully sharp detail not always what he wanted to carry with him but you couldn’t control that, not without carving into your mind like you were working with a scalpel. Hopefully tonight wouldn’t end up being one that Tatia wanted to cut from her mind in the future, he’d agreed to come wanting her to have the experience she had longed for. Giving her that Elijah had spun them out onto the floor, arms around her waist, graceful even as she laughed and wrapped her arms around her neck. He let his smile curl at one corner, shaking his head as he drew her close. ”I won’t take all the credit,” he rumbled softly. Lowering his head, Elijah touched his lips to her forehead, then to her cheek. ”I’m glad it is though. I know how much it meant to you to be here tonight.” Dark eyes flicked around them as he turned them slowly, swaying to the music. ”Are there any prom traditions we should make sure we indulge in?” Probably dozens that were going to be painful but he would take on each to give Tatia the night she’d hoped for.

Tatia knew that she was incredibly lucky that her life had turned out like this. It had ended a thousand years ago after Elijah and his siblings became vampires and even though she had been brought back so that the demon that had raised Henrik would have even more leverage over the Mikaelson family if he needed it, she had still been given a second chance at life and she had been determined to take it. That life had been taken from her again during the ritual but at least then it had been her choice. She had gone out on her own terms so that she could save Elena from a fate that she definitely didn’t deserve and she had been given yet another chance. Tatia knew that she didn’t deserve all of those chances but she was still grateful for them and she knew better than to waste anything that her life had to offer. Going to prom might not seem important to a lot of people unless they were teenagers in high school but it was important to her. She had already asked Elijah to turn her after graduation and he had agreed and while she was ready to start the next chapter of her life with him she wanted to enjoy one night of being a normal high school student and thankfully Elijah was incredible enough to give her that. A high school prom was sure to be nothing compared to some of the lavish balls that Elijah had attended over the years but the fact that he had agreed to go with her really did mean the world to her. His words were enough to draw a smile to her lips and she let her hand rest gently against his cheek. “Don’t worry, I wouldn’t make you get too scruffy but as handsome as you look in a suit it would be good to see you wearing something more casual now and then,” Tatia admitted, knowing that it would have to be more comfortable for Elijah as well. She understood why he dressed the way he did, keeping himself pristine was his way of coping with her death, but she was back now and soon enough with Elijah’s help she wouldn’t be going anywhere so she hoped that he might be able to relax a little more often when that happened. For now, however, she wanted to make the most of seeing him go above and beyond like this and her eyes took in the scene around them once more. It really was amazing and she was glad that she had decided not to miss it because she had a feeling that it was a night that she was never going to forget. It was easy to move with Elijah onto the dance floor and Tatia felt perfectly at ease as she wrapped her arms around his neck and stepped closer to him. She knew that there were sure to be those in attendance who wondered what someone like Elijah was doing with someone like her but they didn’t know the history or the connection that they had and the truth was that Tatia didn’t care what anyone else thought because she was in the arms of the man she loved. “It does mean a lot to me to be here but it means even more to be here with you. It wouldn’t have been the same without you,” she said gently. She knew that she could have spent time with her friends and there would be plenty of time for that before the night was through but Tatia wanted Elijah to be there for all of the special moments of her life so she couldn’t imagine attending without him. Tatia’s expression turned thoughtful for a moment as they moved to the music and Elijah asked if there were any prom traditions that they should indulge in. “To be honest I don’t really know any,” she admitted. Her friends had mentioned a couple but she couldn’t really remember them because they had all been so swept up in everything else. “I’ll settle for just dancing with you and then the two of us heading back to your place or mine unless you can think of any.”ELIJAH MIKAELSON

Esther had been the one to push him towards that stark, immaculate appearance. Coming to her with Tatia’s body and the blood of the woman he had loved staining his mouth and hands, Esther had bid him to lock all of his monstrosity away. Clean hands, an immaculate suit, no outward signs of all that he had done or would continue to do. The memory had remained locked in his mind for close to a thousand years before Tatia’s return had unlocked that door in his mind and so much of what he had done had come rushing back to him. Elijah resisted looking at his hands now. They weren’t clean, they had never been since that night but no longer did he feel that same compulsion to constantly push away all thought of what he had done, seeing himself as floating above the atrocities they had committed. The door to that room had been cracked and the devastation that had lay trapped behind it hadn’t rushed out in a tidal wave to swallow him.
Because of her. Because of his family.
Elijah’s lips curled into a smile to match the soft humour that had been in the sigh he released. For the first time in a thousand years things were different indeed and as he had impressed upon his brothers and sisters, now was very much the time to embrace it while they could. They could not know what was coming and how many of those doors that had opened to them would be slammed shut again. ”For you I would try anything,” he promised, turning into her touch, skimming his lips against the heel of her hand. It was time for them to both embrace this new world. A new start for the family, a chance to break free of that vicious circle that none of them would toss aside in a bloody rage this time around.
That was not a mental image for tonight, however. This was supposed to be about so much more, especially for Tatia. This was a third chance at life for her and this time his family would not snuff it out. He had taken them out onto the dance floor, his arms finding her waist as she eased into him to wrap her arms around his neck. Around them others had already done the same but Elijah’s eyes were only for her. He had trailed kisses to her forehead, her cheek, now he nuzzled into her ear, brushing his lips gently over the lobe as his voice rumbled out low. ”A gift to us both then,” he murmured softly, his fingers trailing gently at the small of her back. ”I would never have been here with anybody but you.” It had all been for her, always. This time, Elijah thought, he would sacrifice everything to have her remain in his life … for the eternity that she had asked for. Drawing back, he had asked about traditions for the night, undoubtedly there were some but his dark eyes could not pick them out before they returned to hers. ”That sounds like a plan,” he breathed softly, his lips curling further as he spun the two of them gently around to the song. ”There is a photographer.” His eyes took in the flash of a camera in the corner. He squinted faintly against that lightl. ”Perhaps after we’ve danced half the night away we can get a lasting memory of this. Something for the mantlepiece?” That snapshot of normality in lives that had certainly been anything but over the centuries.

Going to a dance like this never would have been possible if she and Elijah had had the chance to live out a normal life together and that was something that Tatia had come to terms with. So much had changed since then but as far as she was concerned it was definitely for the better. She couldn’t deny that she regretted the fact that she wasn’t able to be there for Lukas while he was growing up but he had grown into a fine young man even without her guidance and he was someone that she knew that she was always going to be proud of. Things hadn’t worked out the way that any of them had thought that they would but they had all been brought back together once more and for that Tatia was truly grateful. She had made friends during her time in Mystic Falls and they meant the world to her just like Elijah and Lukas did. She knew that she was incredibly blessed to have all of them in her life and she knew better than to take that for granted. Being able to share a night like this with some of the people that she cared about most was something that Tatia knew that she always wanted to remember. It meant a lot to her that Elijah had agreed to go with her considering she knew that a high school dance probably wasn’t high on his list of priorities at all but he knew how much it meant to her so he had agreed to go anyway. As Elijah said that for her he would try anything, Tatia felt a smile form on her face. “Those are dangerous words,” she teased, unable to stop herself. She would never take advantage of those words and she was pretty sure that Elijah knew that but she still couldn’t resist. It wasn’t long before they were on the dance floor and Tatia felt a pleasant shiver run down her spine as Elijah kissed her forehead followed by her cheek before brushing his lips over her ear. “I don’t doubt that,” she said sincerely as Elijah said that he wouldn’t have gone with anyone but her. She knew that his words were true, this really wasn’t Elijah’s kind of thing at all but that made her that much more grateful that he had decided to go with her. Hooking a finger under Elijah’s chin, Tatia drew him closer and pressed her lips against his. “I love you so much,” she breathed. There was a time when she had felt herself torn between Elijah and Niklaus but if she was honest in her heart she had always known who she belonged with and that was Elijah. She had been married before but her time with her husband was short and while it was true that she had loved him, that love paled in comparison to how much she loved Elijah. She knew that she was never going to regret getting married because she wouldn’t have had Lukas otherwise but she was glad that she had decided not to join her husband on his funeral pyre like everyone had expected her to do. Dancing with Elijah, Tatia felt a smile form on her face as he said that there was a photographer and suggested that they could get something to commemorate the night. “That would be perfect,” she admitted. “I always want to remember tonight,” she added as they moved to the music. Her gaze settled on a few familiar figures among the crowd, those of her friends, but as she spotted one particular couple her smile returned. “Rebekah and Matt look so happy together,” she said as she nodded in their direction, knowing that Elijah would no doubt be happy for his sister as well. Rebekah had been through so much and Tatia knew that her friend deserved to be happy. TATIA PETROVA
