Lily is the only daughter of Hannah's vessel Zoe Matthews and her late husband Robert. Robert died when Lily was only five years old and after that she grew up with just her mother raising her. Even from a young age Lily looked just like her mother save for the hazel eyes she had inherited from her father, a constant reminder of the man who would always be missing from her life.

A few months after his death an old friend of Robert's named Darren came into the picture. He was able to tell Zoe and Lily stories about the man that had been a part of their lives for too short a time and the two of them came to trust him more than anyone other than each other. He was there for the two of them when no one else was and it wasn't long before he had become a part of the family.

For years Zoe and Lily were happy and didn't know anything about the supernatural world until Lily transformed for the first time during a full moon when she was only fifteen years old and she confided in her mother straight away. It was a shock to Zoe at first but suddenly a few things about Robert and his behaviour made sense and it was then that the mysteries of the past caught up with them. Robert's death had been made to look like an accident but something about it had always felt off to Zoe and it was only a couple of months after Lily's first transformation that they learned the truth - that he had been killed by a hunter, but little did they know that Darren was hiding a dark secret - he was the one who had killed Robert and he had stayed close to Zoe and Lily wanting to see whether Lily would inherit the werewolf gene from her father.

It only took a couple of months for Darren to figure out what had changed in Lily despite their best efforts to keep him in the dark and it was then that he turned on them. He tried to kill Lily but Zoe managed to knock him out and the two of them fled, leaving the lives they had built for themselves far behind them along with Darren. For a long time Zoe thought that she had killed Darren but no body was ever found. Even so they never returned to their old home, instead choosing to start over somewhere new. Zoe knew that she wasn't going to be able to protect her daughter if she didn't learn as much about the world they really lived in as she could and she knew that she had to get stronger so she began to train. Zoe quickly learned that not all hunters saw the good and the bad in the creatures they hunted so she swore to herself that she was going to protect Lily and any other kids like her as well as all of the innocent people that she could.

Over time their little family started to grow as Lily began befriending other supernatural teenagers like herself who had lost their parents to the supernatural world, the first of which was Oliver, and Zoe gave a home to as many of them as she could. It was a year after they thought they had left Darren behind when he caught up with them once more and this time he managed to manipulate things so that Zoe would be working a case that would take her away from the teenagers for a while. That hunt was the one in which Zoe lost her life and Hannah took over control of her body after making a promise to Zoe that she would look after Lily and the other supernatural kids she was taking care of.

After killing the monster that killed Zoe, Hannah returned to find that one of the kids had already been killed by Darren and he was about to turn on the other three when she stepped in. A fight ensued which resulted in Darren's death and as soon as the kids were safe Hannah explained what had happened to Zoe and the promise she had made to protect them. It was a shock to all of them at first, none more so than Lily, but over time she came to accept that Hannah was different and she became family to them all in her own right.

They moved to Mystic Falls and started over and Lily has now graduated from Mystic Falls High. She is a sophomore at either Whitmore or the Salvatore School and I would love for her to eventually join Scott or Brady's pack.

Ollie is the first kid taken in by Zoe and Lily and he survived the attack by Darren.
