George had been her protector before she’d opened the door of her home to find a uniformed pilot standing right there in front of her. One look at the wall of dirt that had erupted in front of her gun emplacement and he’d known exactly who he was dealing with, even if he hadn’t known it was her in that instant. Some part of her had questioned what had happened in the days between them almost dying and George showing up but she hadn’t been cast adrift for weeks with a sword, new found knowledge of how to use it and no idea if she was going to lose control at any point and kill somebody. George had eased her in to it, like encouraging her to dip her toe in a cold swimming pool. He hadn’t fought when she’d pulled back, sucking in a breath and freaking out just the smallest bit, he’d steadied her instead, talking her around when he’d known that logic would do what her skittish heart wouldn’t let her do. The difference he’d made in her life was something Olivia knew she would always regret not telling him every day of their lives together.
If it hadn’t been for him she might’ve ended up like Matt was now, instead of a sage old woman who was still alive to pass her wisdom on to someone lost only because her husband had sacrificed his life for hers. Olivia bit her lip, her hazel eyes softening as she looked up at Matt. ”In time you’re going to learn to. I’m not going to lie and say it’s going to happen instantly but you will learn.” If he let her teach him. She could do that for George she thought, watching out for someone else the way he had done for her. Perhaps there was a mother’s instinct to it too, all that Florence had given her still caught in her heart.
Rue threaded through her smile as she explained how it was she’d come into her own power. Olivia pressed her lips together, a little heat coming into her cheeks at the memory. It had certainly been an explosive first demonstration of her power but one that had saved the lives of everybody involved … except for the pilot who had been flying the German plan. At Matt’s question, she looked up at him again, swallowing hard as she shook her head. ”No. I don’t know where the power came from. My husband told me it ran in families but the woman I called my mum wasn’t my birth mother. She found me on her doorstep when I was just a few weeks or months old. She had eleven kids of her own, was raising them alone after her husband died. I don’t know how she found the room to take care of me too but she did.” Florence had been incredible, her loss still a gaping hole in her heart. She would’ve hugged Matt, assured him everything was going to be OK but Olivia held her ground.
Finding out what sort of kitsune he was and how to handle that was more important than anything. Olivia nodded slowly, easing her way back to her feet. She lifted her hand, tapping it against her chest. ”It’s all about what’s going on in here more than what’s going on up here,” she told Matt, tapping her fingers against her head. ”Eletricity is all around us, you just have to believe you can draw it in. You think about it too much and it’s like everything gets blocked.” Not so much creation as moulding what was there, the same day she did with the earth. Slanting a smile back at Matt she reached out and squeezed his arm gently. ”Anytime,” she promised. For a moment she used Matt’s sword, testing it out as she asked him what he did remember of where he’d been. Her brows drew together, her hazel eyes scanning the woods around her. ”There are lots of places underground out here. It sounds like someone’s started to use one of them. Do you think you were close to Fell’s Church the entire time?” A shudder went down her spine as she thought of how many times she’d been out there. Had someone been hurting people out there all that time?

Matt still didn’t understand why he had been taken or how he had been turned into a kitsune and he wasn’t sure if he was ever going to get answers but he knew that it didn’t really matter at the end of the day. What mattered was what he was now and he knew that he needed to learn how to control that. For a while after Damon found him he was haunted by the memory of the creature that he had killed even though it was in self defence but now he had learned to accept it. Back then it had been a case of kill or be killed and no matter how much he might wish that he could change what had happened there was no way that he could anyway so he knew that all he could do was try and move on from it. The monster that attacked them wasn’t human and it hadn’t been able to control itself and Matt knew that he didn’t want to end up becoming a monster himself. He knew now that he had been the only human out of his friends for quite some time but he wasn’t like that any longer. He was a kitsune now and that still scared him to an extent but he knew that he just had to find a way to live with it. He hadn’t had a name for what he was before but he had told Rebekah that there was something going on with him and she had decided to stand by him no matter what and for that he truly was grateful. He knew that she wasn’t going to abandon him but he also knew that he needed to learn how to control what he was and that was why he had decided to head out to the woods that day. Running into Olivia wasn’t planned but she had been able to give him a name for what he had become and that was more than he could have asked for. “I know it won’t be easy but it will be worth it to know I won’t have to worry about losing control around the people I care about,” Matt admitted. “I know this is a lot to ask so feel free to say no but do you think you could teach me?” he asked. Normally he wasn’t the kind of person who liked to ask for help when he needed it but this time was different. This time someone could get hurt or worse if he didn’t learn how to control his new abilities and he knew that he didn’t need that on his conscience. He knew that over time he would come to terms with what he had become but what he needed more than anything right now was to not be afraid of it and the powers that he was developing were definitely enough to scare him at the moment. He wouldn’t blame Olivia if she said that she didn’t want to help him though, they had only just met and she had no duty to help him but he knew that it would be so much easier getting through this if he had someone who knew what he was going through on his side. “That’s pretty incredible,” he admitted as she explained about her family situation. That wasn’t something that a lot of people would have done but it sounded like she had really landed on her feet with them. “How do you stop from thinking about it too much?” he asked. He knew that he was guilty of overthinking all of this but he really wanted to learn how to control these abilities so he knew that he would take any help that he could get. As Olivia asked if he thought that he was close to Fell’s Church the whole time, Matt’s expression turned thoughtful for a moment before he shook his head. “I don’t think so, I’m not sure exactly where I was but I think I was moved and left there,” he explained. “You’d think with the amount of people that are usually out here someone would have seen something by now.” He was one of the first to be taken but it still seemed strange that no one seemed to know a thing about who was behind his disappearance or any of the others that had been taken after him. Never for a moment had she believed that she would hurt her family with what she was. The first time she had used her power it was entirely instinctual, her body reacting to the threat approaching before her mind had half caught up to what she was seeing. George had told her it was self-preservation, her abilities kicking in to protect her and the men of her emplacement out of instinct and it had almost felt heroic. It was only later that she realised that some didn’t have that sort of introduction to who they were. Some suffered with anger, their abilities scrambled by the emotions boiling beneath the surface, the circumstances of her life. Olivia knew she’d been lucky with it. They might not have had much, she might have been abandoned on a stranger’s doorstep and been living through a brutal war but there wasn’t a single moment of it where she was so grateful for what she had been given. Maybe that was what had steadied her, or maybe it had just been George’s presence. Either way she’d never had to worry, not in the way she saw Matt doing now.
Olivia’s brow was furrowed faintly as Matt said he knew it wasn’t going to be easy but it was all going to be worth it. That was an awful lot of pressure on the shoulders of someone so young. Her expression softened though, her smile tugging faintly at the corners of her mouth. ”My mum always said the best things in life were worth working for. You’re going to feel more in control before you know it.” It was an easy promise to make when her own abilities had been under control for more than fifty years, all thanks to George and his teachings. She’d never imagined she would have to pass them on to somebody else but seeing Matt struggle had already had her thinking of offering to step in . At his question she was reaching out to touch his arm, her head bobbing immediately. ”If you’ll let me I will.” Passing on all that George had taught her, making sure Matt could sleep easily knowing that he wasn’t going to turn that sword of his abilities on anybody he cared about.
She didn’t know what she would’ve done if she’d been like that. The thought of hurting one of her brothers or sisters, her mum, even George, was enough to make her feel a little sick now. They’d all done so much for her that her heart ached just revealing it to Matt now. ”Incredibly lucky,” Olivia admitted hoarsely. She brough one hand up, rubbing it lightly over her chest, slipping it up to rub fingertips over her throat for a moment. ”It takes time,” she told him, reaching out to squeeze his arm gently after she’d tapped her head. ”Good people too. If you have people who care about you around that you can talk this through with it makes it a thousand times easier. In time you’ll find out your limits and you’ll know when you’re close to crossing them. Until that happens it’s mostly about focus, being aware of what’s around you and how you feel.” Fear, anger, frustration, they were all going to bleed into what was going on. The exact things that Matt was worried about now. Whatever had happened to him had left him hovering the brink of all those emotions. The worst part, she thought, was that someone had done this to him. Carefully she asked about where he’d been held, her hands swinging the sword cautiously, idly the entire time, a way that was as natural to her as breathing now. ”It always seems like there’s never anybody around to see these things,” she murmured. ”Can you remember what direction you were moving in when you found? It might at least give you somewhere to start.” Given how old these woods were and how many people were in and out of them on a daily basis figuring this out was going to be worse than finding a needle in a haystack.

Matt didn’t understand how any of this was happening but then again there was a lot that had happened in Mystic Falls over the last few years that he couldn’t explain. To begin with he had blamed the Salvatore brothers for bringing all of this to Mystic Falls but he knew now that it went so far beyond them. Gone were the days of thinking that vampires and werewolves were the biggest problem the town had, now there were lots of different creatures around and there were people who thought that it was fine to steal people from around town and experiment on them. Matt had never wanted to become supernatural himself but he hadn’t had a say in the matter so all he could do was try and make the best of it. He knew that he could lean on his friends and confide in them about what he had become now that he knew what that was but he wasn’t ready quite yet. He was still coming to terms with the fact that he had killed a creature the day that Damon had found him out in the woods and he had come close to killing Damon when the guy had made him angry as well. Matt knew that he needed to get himself under control before he let his friends get too close to him so this was just the way that it had to be right now. “Your mom sounds like a much better influence than mine, mine always thought that the best things in life come for free,” Matt said, a rueful smile forming on his face as he looked over at Olivia. Working hard had never been on Kelly Donovan’s radar and it was the same for his sister. Matt was determined to be different than the two of them so he wasn’t afraid to put in the hard work to make sure that he learned to control this. “I hope you’re right,” he added as Olivia said that he would feel more in control before he knew it. He needed to, he couldn’t risk what had happened with Damon happening again because he wasn’t sure if he would be able to stop himself next time. Asking Olivia to help him was huge for Matt, he wasn’t used to asking anyone for help but even he knew when he was up against something more than he could handle on his own. Asking for help was the right thing to do but the truth was that he wouldn’t have blamed her if she had decided to turn him down. They didn’t really know each other and he knew that it was a big ask so he was preparing himself for that reaction when she reached out and touched his arm before saying that she would help him if he let her. “I will, thank you,” he said sincerely, a genuine smile touching his lips this time as his eyes met hers. “I really appreciate it.” He had been trying to deal with this on his own but he knew that he was out of his depth so it was a relief to know that now he had someone who had been through it who could help him. As Olivia explained what it was going to be like and what he was going to need, Matt’s expression turned thoughtful for a moment. “My friends know about the supernatural but I haven’t told them what happened to me yet. They didn’t want me knowing about any of this, I was compelled to forget what I had seen before I was taken but now the compulsion has worn off,” he explained. “I want to reach out to them but I need to learn how to control myself a bit more first. I don’t want to hurt any of them,” he added. Damon would have deserved it if he had done after what had happened to Vicki but Matt knew that he didn’t want to become that person and he didn’t want to put any of his friends at risk either. It was all so overwhelming but he knew that in time he would get it all under control, he had to. “Not really. I woke up on the ground near Fell’s Church and I started heading away from it to find my way out. I looked for signs of where I’d come from but I couldn’t see anything,” he said, knowing that it wasn’t much help. He had no idea who had taken him or why and he knew that others in town had been taken too but sooner or later he had to believe that the truth would come out. OLIVIA CAMPBELL

Florence Ashby had never kept it a secret that her youngest had been a foundling. As soon as she thought Olivia was old enough to understand she’d sat her down to talk. A cup of warm, sweetened milk pressed into her hands – like even at that age it was going to come as a shock that needed to be eased – little legs swinging as she was sat down at the kitchen table. Just the two of them for this, although her brothers and sisters had all tumbled into the room like puppies afterwards, assurances babbled at her, just in case she hadn’t taken her mum’s words to heart. ’I didn’t carry you in my belly, not the way I did Alice or John or Maud, or any of your brothers and sisters but that doesn’t make me any less your mum. I’m always gonna love you like I did, Livvy, and I hope you believe, like I did, that there’s someone out there who loved you enough to leave you with someone they knew was going to love you.’ Thoughts of her real mum, or any sort of a dad had flitted out of her pretty soon after that. She had someone who loved her and Florence had been more than enough.
There was though. That shadowy figure popping into her head, standing at the shoulder of her memory of her mum. Olivia felt the pang of not knowing the woman but Florence had been enough to show her love, to make her the woman she was. Her smile turned wan, empathy rolling through her gut. ”She was,” she said hollowly. Florence had been gone almost fifty years, never knowing just how far her youngest had gone. ”It sounds like you’ve got a good head on your shoulders despite your mum’s influence.” He was a teenaged boy who seemed to be supporting himself, more than most managed at his age. Hard to keep yourself propped up under those circumstances when something else swept your feet out from under you though. More of that empathy poured into her hazel eyes as she looked at him. ”I know I am, cause my mum would’ve said the same thing.” An assurance she used to guide herself at all times.
Her mum probably wouldn’t have been much good with a sword but if she’d been here she would’ve swept Matt up into one of those bone creaking hugs and stuffed him so full of food it would’ve been hard to remember what was bothering him in the first place. Olivia nodded to Matt, her smile dimpling for just a moment. He was welcome to all that she could give him, all that Florence and George could give him through her. For weeks on end George had trained her in a place not all that different to the woods here, somewhere she couldn’t harm anybody else. The grass and the bushes could take it, he’d promised her and the trees would if Matt went to town with the blade.
Olivia let the sword slowly swing down to rest at her hip as Matt began to open up to her again. ”I’d say it’s too late for them to keep trying to help that way now. You’re trying to protect them back, hopefully I can help you do that.” In time he’d open up in a way she hadn’t been able to, easier for him that they already knew so much about what was out there. Still, it seemed as though they didn’t know everything. Olivia scanned the woods around them, shivering a bit as Matt told her where he’d woken up. ”That’s somewhere to start at least but these are big woods.” She swallowed hard, wrapping an arm around her. ”If you ever want some company looking, I’d be happy to come along. Did you wanna try some training now?” It was a lot for one afternoon but if a little control would make Matt feel more settled she’d be glad to put the time in.
