Henrik had moved in with Elijah as soon as he had found out that his brother was still alive but the truth was that they hadn’t seen much of each other lately at all. Elijah was busy with Tatia and Henrik was busy with Olivia and work and it seemed that they just kept missing each other. It felt like it had been far too long since they had last had the chance to catch up properly and he was more than ready to change that. He had thought about seeing whether his brother would be free to do something like this but Elijah had beat him to it and he had apparently roped Olivia in for her help as well. Henrik had spent years after he was brought back by Crowley believing his family to be dead and he had felt angry at first when he had learned that that wasn’t true and that he had been kept from them for eight years but the truth was that it had been a lie by omission and Crowley had become family to him during that time as well so he knew better than to hold it against the demon too much. He had the chance to make things right and be there with his family now anyway and he knew that he couldn’t really ask for anything more than that. Despite Olivia and Elijah’s assurances that he shouldn’t blame himself for what had happened to his siblings after he died the truth was that he still did blame himself and he had a feeling that he would for some time to come. He knew that he wanted to find a way to make it up to each of them if he could and nothing was going to stop him from doing that. He hadn’t stood in Nik’s way when he had decided that he wanted to complete the ritual to free his werewolf side but he hadn’t been prepared to let those used in the ritual die permanently either. As for Kol he was working on something to help his brother but Elijah and Rebekah were much more difficult and he knew that it was going to take time to figure out something for each of them but he knew that he wasn’t going to give up. For now, however, he knew that he would just settle for being able to spend some quality time with Elijah and Henrik felt a smile work its way across his face as Elijah said that the apartment was his home too and that it would always be open to him. “Thank you,” he said sincerely. He knew that Elijah meant it and the truth was that the apartment did feel like home to him but he still knew how important it was for Elijah and Tatia to have some space away from everyone else as well so he was always mindful of that. It was easier for him to stay at Olivia’s when they wanted some time together since she lived alone anyway but he knew that he was going to have to make sure that he got to spend some more time at the apartment so that he and Elijah didn’t become complete strangers as well. As Elijah spoke again and squeezed his shoulder, Henrik felt his smile return. “It won’t, I promise. I’ll figure it out, you can trust me,” Henrik assured him. He knew that he wasn’t going to do anything to let his brother, Tatia or Lukas down. It was clear to him that Elijah was still scared of losing Tatia and her becoming an Original Vampire like Elijah and their siblings would make sure that that wasn’t going to be a problem. Other vampires still had weaknesses that could result in them getting killed but his siblings didn’t have that problem and Tatia wouldn’t either when he figured out how to recreate the ritual. She would be able to stay with Elijah and Lukas forever and he knew that it was the least that they all deserved after everything that they had been through. “Definitely,” he nodded, moving away from his brother and grabbing a couple of bowls before setting them down on the counter so Elijah could dish out the stew. There had been no doubt that the apartment he’d taken here in town would be open to his brother on that first day they had met again. Henrik had already been in town there, there had been the chance that he’d already found himself accommodation. His brother had rapidly agreed to staying with him that day though and it had given the two of them a chance to truly get to know one another again. A thousand years had certainly changed him and in the time he had been in the care of the then King of Hell his brother had grown into a young man, becoming, perhaps, even the best of them. He hadn’t been tainted by their mother’s desperation to keep them, hadn’t suffered the thousand years of constant pursuit and hatred from their father. Elijah knew that his little brother still blamed himself for all of that but none of it had been his fault. He had been a boy desperate to see something incredible, that curiosity had been paid for with his life, something he was glad that Crowley had corrected, even if it hadn’t been from the goodness of his heart to start with. It had given his brother a chance for a new life, one that had given him the sort of thing he had been denied the first time around. Between Olivia’s presence in Henrik’s life and Tatia’s in his the proximity the apartment had once given them had slowly drifted away. It was the way life always went, but in their case their family was always drawn back together again. Their word had been their bond for a thousand years and that wasn’t about to change now.
He had meant it when he’d said that doors would always be open for his brother and Elijah knew that the same could be said by any of his siblings. While the rest of them were still standing on opposite sides of burned bridges, Henrik was the one connection they all shared. If anything were to threaten him now the family would rally around, despite all that had happened. It was what they had always done for one another. Henrik was doing that for him now, agreeing that he would help to turn Tatia as she had asked, turning her just as they had been. ”I always have done,” Elijah promised lightly. If there was a way Henrik would find it. The only one of them would magic left in his bones, the one using it to do all the good he could for those around him. It was what their family should’ve been striving for all of these years but hurt and regret had kept them twisted for far too long. Pushing it from his mind, Elijah prepared to dish up dinner. He retrieved the loaf of bread that he had baked earlier, slicing neatly through it, the last traces of steam emerging from its centre as he put it onto a plate. ”Have you cooked for Olivia yet?” he asked, a thin thread of amusement back on his face as he reached for the ladle. ”There’s something about the process that still seems to make others happy.” It mattered little to him now, other than the warmth it gave to his otherwise cold flesh but Elijah had seen what it had meant when he had cooked for Tatia. ”I’ve tasted some of what she’s prepared at Campbell’s. I might even dare to say her stew might rival mine. Keep it from me if it does? Let my ego believe I have that on my side at least.” Elijah grinned at his brother as he served steaming venison stew into both bowls.

Henrik hadn’t known how much his life would change when he first arrived in Mystic Falls but things had definitely changed for the better. Now he had his family around him, had had Olivia and he had Lukas as well not to mention all of the people that had come into his life during his time in Mystic Falls. It was something that he never could have seen coming but not a day went by when he didn’t appreciate just how lucky he was. He hadn’t wanted his life to be cut short the way that it had been and he hadn’t wanted his siblings to suffer the way that they had done because of it either but he knew that he was never going to regret being able to meet Olivia, Crowley, Cas or any of the other people that he had in his life now. He wanted to make things better for all of his siblings if he could but it was going to take him time to figure out how to make it up to each of them even if it was only in a small way. One thing he knew for sure, though, was that he wasn’t going to give up trying. His siblings might be different to how they were when he had known them and he knew that he was different too but as far as he was concerned that didn’t really matter. At the end of the day they were still family and they always would be despite their differences so he knew that he just had to remember that. Nik and Elijah always had a habit of clashing and Kol seemed to butt heads with them both a lot as well but it had been the same way ever since they were young so in a way it was reassuring that some things hadn’t changed at least. One thing that had changed lately, though, was just how much time he and Elijah got to spend together. Henrik had been spending more and more time with Olivia lately and even though he had thought that he was doing the right thing to make sure that Elijah and Tatia could have some space rather than having to stay at the Boarding House every night the truth was that he had missed spending time with his brother so he was glad that Elijah had planned this. A part of Henrik realised that he probably should have picked up on the fact that there would be an ulterior motive to this that went beyond one brother simply wanting to spend time with another but the truth was that he didn’t mind. He had seen how upset both Elijah and Lukas had been when Tatia had decided to offer herself up to Nik as a sacrifice in the ritual and he knew that he never wanted any of them to go through that kind of pain again. As Elijah said that he had always trusted him, though, it was enough to bring a smile to Henrik’s face. “And I you,” he admitted. He had always known where he stood with Elijah and he had always been able to turn to his brother no matter what and that still hadn’t changed. Watching as Elijah began to dish up the food, Henrik shook his head as he asked if he’d cooked for Olivia yet. “No, I haven’t. To be honest I haven’t had much practice, it was easier to get the demons to deliver food when I was in Hell and since I’ve been back I tend to eat out a lot,” he admitted with a shrug. It simply hadn’t been something that he could have done while he was living in Hell and since he’d arrived in Mystic Falls there had been plenty of other things that were much more pressing so he had never taken the time to really learn. “You’ve got yourself a deal,” Henrik chuckled, grabbing both of their glasses and cutlery before heading over to the table and setting everything down ready for their meal. Undoubtedly Esther would’ve been proud to see all of her children able to wield the magic that had always been in her veins. Mikael would’ve been just as proud if all of his sons were able to accompany him into war, their prowess on a horse, with a sword, as a warrior, the only thing that seemed to matter to him. Their father didn’t get his wish, although, Mikael probably came closer to it than Esther ever would. Even Niklaus had been willing to throw himself into battle, probably just to prove to the man who hated him that the son who wasn’t his was stronger than he had ever given him credit for. Their mother’s grievous actions hadn’t prevented that but it had cut them off from their magic, something that Elijah knew had cut Kol deeply. His younger brother had never broken his connection with those who could wield magic but still, his own connection with it was gone. Henrik was the last one of them left capable of wielding it and he had now asked his brother to use it for him, for Tatia. It was a lot to ask but as he saw Henrik smile at his words Elijah knew he had been right to ask. Letting out a long breath, Elijah reached out a hand and squeezed his brother’s shoulder in appreciation. They would find a way to do as Tatia had asked.
In the mean time their lives would inch on regardless. For Henrik there were vast opportunities now, ones that his siblings had never and would never have. Knowing that he was happy with Olivia had been a relief. He had seen her power first hand, he knew if there was anybody willing to protect Henrik other than his siblings, it would be her. ”Perhaps I should have had you come earlier to help more,” Elijah murmured. His brows rose slightly, a breathless chuckle emerging as he set out the bread and began to serve the stew into bowls. Not quite the same as eating it around a fire, their family and the others from their village all gathered together. ”Take out in Hell, whoever would have thought.” Elijah’s mouth twitched into a softer smile as he handed his brother the bread plate to take to the table and followed behind with the bowls. ”I don’t have the opportunity to indulge often but being here has given me the chance occasionally.” Elijah set the bowls down at the table, settled into his seat. He reached for the bottle of wine he’d set on the table and topped up a healthy amount into each of the glasses Henrik had brought over. ”Perhaps arrange a night like this for Olivia? Save her from cooking on those nights you aren’t eating out. I’m sure you would have her quite beside her herself.” Elijah had a twinkle in his eye as he shook out a napkin and draped it over his things. Despite his years as a young man, his centuries as one, he still had now allowed himself that sort of indulge too often. A scant few had made their way past his cracked shields. Tatia had been the first and would be the last.

Henrik knew that he should be used to the way things were by now but the truth was that it still amazed him sometimes that he and his siblings were around a thousand years after they were born. It never should have been possible but his decision to go and watch the men turn into wolves during the full moon and dying as a result of that decision had led to his mother turning his siblings into the world’s first vampires and things had escalated from there. Henrik knew that Crowley had brought him back to live so long after he died to make sure that he would have a way of influencing his family’s decision about whether or not to get involved with the fight for control of Hell, he had found that out pretty quickly after learning that his siblings were still alive, but thankfully it hadn’t come to that and now they were all free to live their lives. Tatia had been brought back for the same reason but that at least had ensured that she and Elijah could get another chance at being together like they should have had all along and Henrik himself knew that he wouldn’t have met Olivia if things had worked out differently. He knew that awful things had happened to his siblings over the course of their lives so far and he also knew that they had all done some awful things to people all around the world but at the end of the day they were his family and he knew that he would always stand by them no matter what. He was working on bringing their family back together slowly and he hoped that over time their family might finally start to heal. So much death and destruction had been caused as a result of his decision all those years ago and Henrik had been doing his best to make up for that in his own way ever since Crowley brought him back but he knew that it was important that he took his chance to be happy as well. Crowley had given him a second chance at life and Henrik had been living it for the best part of a decade now but he still couldn’t help but feel like he was living on borrowed time and he wanted to make the most of it while it lasted. Needless to say he had been spending time with Olivia when he could but he had been trying to spend time with his family too and now it was Elijah’s turn. “If I’d known what you were planning then I would have done,” he assured his brother. Henrik knew that Elijah didn’t technically need to eat but he was still going to the trouble of making a home cooked meal for the two of them and that meant the world to Henrik. As his brother spoke again, Henrik couldn’t help but laugh. “Trust me, there is no way that I would have survived eight years down there otherwise. Maybe I’ll get you to try a demon’s cooking one day, then you’ll see what I mean,” he chuckled. It really was disgusting so takeout had ended up being the only way. “If it helps I’ll never say no to a home cooked meal,” he shrugged as he carried the bread plate over to the table before taking his seat. Lifting his glass to his lips once Elijah had topped it up, Henrik took a sip. “Maybe I will although I might need a few lessons from you first,” he shrugged. He had picked up a few things along the way and he had tried making a few things since he had been living in Mystic Falls but he wasn’t good at making anything too fancy and if he did end up making a meal for Olivia then he knew that he would want it to be special. Even when they had managed to settle somewhere long enough to live rather than just exist on the run it had rarely been like this. Moments of peace were always disturbed by something violent, their bond torn apart by one slight or another, siblings always stabbing one another in the back in the end because above anything else, their vow ruled their lives.
Always and forever.
In a way it always had been true. They were still here a thousand years after they all should have died, their lives perhaps cut shorter than they would’ve been now, but lived normally at least. With Henrik gone Esther had taken that unthinkable step and instead of just damning them to an eternal life, she had damned them to orbiting each other like binary stars, their lives entwined, colliding at times, crashing apart only to remain connected through that bond that would not break no matter what.
He still wasn’t sure how the lives they had built here were going to cope with what might come. They could play at being normal, settling down with those they lived, trying to build something here in what had once been their home but if the past had proven anything it was that they could never rely on normality for too long.
Don’t rush towards tragedy, Elijah warned himself as he put Henrik to work on the meal he’d had mostly prepared by the time his brother had returned to the apartment. It would give him no sustenance but this was all about family and nothing about feeding the hunger that always burned in the pit of his stomach. ”And that would have quite spoiled the surprise,” Elijah drawled lightly. ”Next time we’ll make it planned and you’ll get to do all of the scut work.” There was a faintly smile curling at the corners of his mouth, amusement in dark eyes as he spooned up what he had cooked. Henrik had been lost so young, the memories of gathering around the fire to eat perhaps not ingrained as deeply in his memory. Fingers wrapped around the wooden bowls on a cold night, the taste of the venison one or another man in the village had killed out in the woods rich in their mouths.
No, this was a different affair indeed but not one free of memories. Elijah watched his brother with a raised brow as he carried the bowls to the table and set them down. Henrik had lived for years in hell with Crowley, had a father of sorts in the man. ”It’s hard to picture the King of Hell bustling around down there in an apron, weeping over cut onions,” he admitted. The take out probably made sense then, normality a different beast there indeed. ”I believe I’ll pass and keep offering meals like this up instead.” There was an edge of promise in his tone as he settled at the table and watched Henrik do the same. Elijah’s lips pursed into a smile as he lifted his glass and tipped it in his brother’s direction. ”The Cordon Bleu in Paris will be glad I’m passing their teachings along. Here’s to new beginnings and lessons learned…” Elijah held his glass up to his brother to clink. Perhaps instead of destruction Mystic Falls would finally give them all that their family had been cost centuries before.
