Almost from the moment he had reunited with his younger brother here in Mystic Falls, he had been sharing the apartment with him. Elijah had hoped it would give them the time to truly get to know one another again after so many centuries apart but more often than not the two of them had been ships passing in the night. It would have been easy to point the finger at his growing relationship with Tatia as the reason for that but as with so many things in Mystic Falls, it was far more complicated than just one relationship. Family, the tangled webs that Niklaus had managed to weave and continued to do so here in town, Tatia, yes, Henrik’s own obligations to the King of Hell, despite his cutting of as many ties as possible there ... and Olivia. It had been a relief to know that there had been someone else in town who had previously offered a hand of friendship to his youngest brother. Alone apart from the demons, thinking that his entire family had perished almost a thousand, Elijah was certain it had to have been a lonely existence. It had been for all of them on occasion over those centuries, even knowing that a handful of siblings were so often within arm’s reach. Proximity wasn’t all that it promised. And that was one of the reasons that he had reached out to Olivia this week to ask which night his brother was not scheduled to work. From there it had been easy enough to arrange the sort of proximity that meant he would get to spend an evening catching up with his brother, one that was long overdue.
Deft and elegant fingers turned both the knife and the potato that was being held, carving it as neatly as the others before he set it down in the tray that was sizzling lightly on the top of the stove. Food had long since lost much of its appeal but a man didn’t spend a thousand years trying to blend into the world without learning a few things. Blood satisfied one hunger but one of the curses of their kind was that a purely inhuman diet would always lead to one looking inhuman. Coffee could warm the flesh, food could give it colour. Always striving to retain as much as who he had been as possible he’d grown used to taking in both and now with both Henrik and Tatia spending so much time here he had found some satisfaction for himself in preparing the recipes he’d picked up across the world over the last thousand years. Elijah set the final potato down, before grabbing a spoon to stir them through the hot oil and herbs. Some might’ve seen the meat that was reaching room temperature on the counter as exotic but for him at least, and for Henrik too, he hoped, it would be a taste of home. Gripping the edge of the tray with a mitt, Elijah crouched and slid the tray into the stove as he heard the apartment door open. Rising back to his feet, he shot his youngest brother a smile as he watched him step inside. ”It seems as though your boss is as accurate with her timings as she is with her directions. She said you’d be home right about now.” Elijah reached for the bottle of red wine he’d poured himself a measure from half an hour ago and inclined it in his brother’s direction. ”Can I pour you a glass?” Some of the bottle was destined for the pan the meat would also be heading for but the majority was to be enjoyed with the meal. Two brothers sharing an evening and a bottle in a way that neither had imagined they ever would be able to.

Since he broke Cas out of Hell, Henrik hadn’t seemed to spend that much time at the apartment. The night he had returned he had ended up falling asleep on the sofa only to wake when Olivia showed up but Elijah had been spending the night with Tatia and since then the two of them had kept on missing each other. Henrik knew that neither of them was to blame, they both led busy lives but he couldn’t deny that he missed being able to spend time with his older brother and he knew that he wanted to put that right as soon as he could. Between trying to find a way to restore Cas’ fading grace, trying to locate their siblings, working at Campbells and spending time with Olivia it felt like there really hadn’t been much time for anything else. Some might hate living a life that was so busy but as far as Henrik was concerned he loved it. He had spent either years doing Crowley’s bidding before bumping into Elijah and learning that his siblings were all still alive after all and knowing that Crowley had kept the truth from him for so long and let him believe that his siblings were dead had given Henrik the strength to finally cut those ties the way he had wanted to do for such a long time. He still helped Crowley out on occasion but since then he had been living his life for himself rather than for anyone else and it was refreshing, to say the least. He knew that he was never going to be able to make up for everything that had happened after his siblings were turned into vampires as a result of his childish desire to see the men turn into wolves but he was doing his best to help as many people as he could and he was making sure to enjoy the second chance at having a life that he had been given while he was doing that. That day he had spent most of his time following a lead on something that might help him restore Cas’ fading grace only to eventually end up coming up short. He knew that he needed to come up with a way to save the angel and even though the memories of his time with Cas still seemed to be just beyond his reach he couldn’t shake the feeling that he was family and that was something that Henrik refused to give up on. Having stopped by to see Olivia on his way home Henrik made his way back to the apartment and felt a smile work its way across his face as he realised that this time Elijah was home. They hadn’t had the chance to talk since Henrik had returned to Mystic Falls after breaking Cas out of his prison and that was something that he regretted. He and Elijah had always been close and that was something that he knew he didn’t want to change so he was determined to work on it. Having filled Olivia in on what he had been up to while he was gone he knew that he was going to have to do the same for Elijah and he knew that he was also going to have to fill him in on the fact that Nik knew he was alive but the truth was that for now Henrik was just happy to see his brother again. “Olivia seems to know me better than I do myself sometimes,” he chuckled as he set his keys down on the table and looked over at his brother. “Sure, thanks,” he nodded as Elijah offered him a glass. “What’s the occasion?” he asked. He knew that they didn’t really need one but Elijah was going out of his way to cook so Henrik couldn’t deny that he was a little curious as to his brother’s motives although with Elijah Henrik trusted him enough to know that it wouldn’t be anything bad. A thousand years without either his youngest brother or the love of his life had rapidly been eclipsed by the short period he’d had the two of them back. Philosophically Elijah would have admitted that he had been spoiled by both Henrik and Tatia being back. The two of them were living their lives in this town, doing the things both of them had been robbed of the chance of doing a millennium ago. Tatia was back at school, Henrik was flitting between work at Campbell’s, a development he hadn’t seen coming but should have done given how close he had grown to Olivia, and the occasional task still being handed out by the former King of Hell. Elijah didn’t know whether his brother’s trip out of town for a few days had been instigated by Crowley or had been borne of some other sense of duty, either way in those few days that his brother had been gone, he’d missed those few glimpses they’d had of each other in passing while they had gone about trying to put some roots in this town. It really was strange to find himself dealing with such an emotion given how long they had been forced to live without Henrik but coming back together in Mystic Falls had started to build the sort of bridges for the Mikaelsons that they had so long been denied. Normal lives, well, as normal as they could get for the immortal original vampires, were suddenly a brass ring within grabbing distance. Niklaus and his desire for a loyal army of hybrids was threatening to tarnish it but waiting for his brother to see sense would only derail this attempt they were all making. They could no longer set aside their happiness for one another, they had to just keep putting one foot in front of another, striving for what they should have had a thousand years ago.
Their lives then would’ve held little resemblance to this one, Elijah had thought with some amusement as he’d started to line up ingredients earlier. If there was any cooking to be done in the village, it had been the women doing it. The men might have brought a haunch of venison home and dressed the carcass but that was as far as their involvement had gone. They had been missing a trick, despite not finding sustenance in food anymore, Elijah had found some pleasure in preparing food for others. With Tatia back and Henrik living with him food had become necessary. Now it offered him a chance to get those few hours he desired with his brother to catch up on what had been going on. Olivia, it seemed, had been spot on about the time Henrik would be walking back into the apartment. ”She’s a shrewd woman,” Elijah agreed, his smile growing as he nudged the stove door closed with a knee. ””I must admit to having asked her about your schedule to make sure I wouldn’t be doing all of this just for myself.” While there might’ve been some faint edge of pleasure to it, the purpose would most certainly have been defeated. There wasn’t an ounce of rue in Elijah’s expression as he drew a glass over and filled it halfway with the wine. ”I would ask if I needed one but I have to admit, there is one. I was hoping we could catch up. It seems like months since we’ve managed to be more than ships passing in the night. I sweet talked your boss into a guaranteed night off and I went shopping for a little taste of home.” It had felt right given the ground they were now standing on again. The family was home again, almost entirely, for the first time since they had fled from the village, pursued by their own father.

Henrik really hadn’t been spending much time at the apartment he and Elijah shared since he’d returned to Mystic Falls after breaking Cas out of Hell and every time he was there it seemed like Elijah ended up staying the night at the Boarding House with Tatia. Henrik really couldn’t blame his brother for taking the chance to be happy, after all his time with Tatia was something that had been brought to an end far too quickly after he had set the wheels in motion that had led to his siblings being turned by sneaking out to watch the men turn into wolves and he knew that he wanted his brother to hold on to that happiness for as long as possible. As soon as he had learned about the ritual he had known that he wouldn’t have been able to bring himself to damn Nik to another five hundred years of living with his werewolf side locked away from him but he had also known that he wasn’t going to let anyone his brother had chosen stay dead after the ritual. Henrik knew that he probably should have told Elijah about his plan but even though he trusted his brother with his life the truth was that he hadn’t wanted anyone else to know in case it didn’t work. It was a big thing to bring one person back from the dead let alone three and Tatia had already died once so he hadn’t known whether it would actually be possible but he had known that he’d had to try not just for Elijah’s sake but for Lukas’ as well. His best friend had only just managed to get his mother back after living without her for a thousand years and Henrik had known that there was no way that he could put him through that again. Now Elijah seemed to be getting his happy ending at last and Henrik seemed to be as well, which was something that he hadn’t seen happening at all. Olivia had always meant a lot to him but since the two of them reconnected in Mystic Falls they had been getting even closer and now they were giving being together a shot. Henrik knew that having someone he cared about like that meant that he was vulnerable in a way as the truth was that he didn’t know what he would do if anything ever happened to Olivia but at the same time he was able to draw strength from her so he knew that being with her was what he wanted and she had made it clear to him that it was what she wanted too. He had never thought that he would get to experience a relationship like that so he knew better than to take it for granted. For the first time in a long time everything in his life seemed to be going right and he knew better than to take that for granted. The connection he felt with Cas was something that still confused Henrik but he couldn’t shake the feeling that he now had more family in town than he thought and he knew that he would do everything he could in order to keep it that way. For now he knew that he just wanted to spend some time catching up with his older brother, however, so he was glad that Elijah had decided to surprise him that day. “I’ll have to make sure to thank her, it has been too long since we did this,” he admitted as he looked over at his brother. Even though it was a pleasant surprise Henrik was certain that there had to be a reason behind it and even though he suspected that there might be more to it he nodded as Elijah spoke once more. “I definitely won’t say no to that. Nothing beats home cooking,” Henrik admitted as he took a sip from the glass that Elijah had poured him. “Is there anything I can do to help?”ELIJAH MIKAELSON

This wouldn’t have been out of the ordinary for other families as siblings had grown and started to spin out into their own lives but things for the Mikaelsons hadn’t been normal since the night Henrik had begged Niklaus to take him out to see the wolves turn into men. That one act had been the lynchpin around where their lives had spun out of control. There had been brief moments of normality in the time since, spots of light in the dark, but as the years had drifted past they had faded into memory, eclipsed by the darkness that always seemed to linger around them. Undoubtedly that was nature’s idea of balancing the scales a little, never allowing them the sort of life they would have been allowed if Esther hadn’t tried to twist fate to her own unhinged hand. Elijah didn’t want to look a gift horse in the mouth but barring the years they had spent in New Orleans this was as close to the lives they once might have had. He had Tatia here, for almost the first time in as long as he could remember clearly he was happy. Henrik had grown into a generous hearted young man, he was in his first blushes of love and even Rebekah and Niklaus were free here. There was still the matter of Kol to deal with of course, and Niklaus’ determination to build himself a loyal family of hybrids, creatures unable to say no or to betray him. That part of him that still cared for his brother ached at the thought of what Nik was tossing away for his supposed happiness but his brother was too far gone right now to listen to reason. Perhaps together the family could change that but they had to put on a united front to manage it. That meant them actually being able to spend time together.
It had taken some wrangling to make it happen tonight but seeing Henrik walk in through the door made it all worth it. Had things taken their normal course this perhaps would’ve happened in a hut not a handful of miles from here, the meal cooked over a fire by Tatia and Olivia instead of the two of them. Things had changed though, enough that Olivia was the one working tonight while his brother was home, something that would never have been ‘permitted’ in their day. Elijah’s smile turned crooked as he met his brother’s eye across the counter top. ”She’s already had one from me but I imagine another wouldn’t go amiss. Perhaps next time we’ll have to talk Olivia into taking a night off, perhaps convince Tatia, Lukas and Rebekah to join us too.” A prelude to what inevitably had to come next if their family were going to be able to call this town home for much longer. A trace of laughter filled Elijah’s voice as he handed the glass to his brother. ”You haven’t tried my cooking yet. I haven’t exactly had much call for it of late, not unless you count me getting up early enough to try and make Tatia breakfast.” Here that hadn’t been too much of a problem but in a Boarding House surrounded by others it was always interesting as to who would drift into the kitchen to find out what he was up to. Guile filled Elijah’s expression as he filled his own glass. ”How are you at being a sous chef?” he asked as he tilted his head towards the pile of carrots and broccolini that sat atop the counter. ”The venison and potatoes are already cooking but there’s still some prep work to do.” Alone he could’ve made quick work of it but half of the fun in cooking, Elijah had learned, was who you had beside you in the kitchen, who you were preparing the meal for. It was their joy at the heart of it, his own enjoyment of food muted greatly these days.

Back before he died, Henrik had never given too much thought to what his future would be like. At only thirteen years old when he’d died it had been easy to think that there would be plenty of time to think about the future and focus on having fun instead and he had been more than happy to do that. He had immersed himself in his friends and family and he hadn’t really thought more than a few days ahead at any one time. Now his life was completely different, Crowley bringing him back had given him a new appreciation of life and that was even truer now that he was able to live his life the way that he wanted to rather than living just to do what Crowley wanted. He was finally free to be the person that he wanted to be and that meant doing more for his family and those around him and it also meant that he and Olivia had the chance to be together. He hadn’t planned on falling for her but she had made an impression on him even before the two of them were reunited in Mystic Falls and that was something that he hadn’t expected at all. Things were going well for the two of them, too well it seemed at times in fact, but after everything he had been through he knew better than to question it. She had given him a job and after that first night together they had been spending more and more nights together lately while Elijah had been doing the same with Tatia so the two of them really hadn’t seen much of each other but that was something that Henrik wanted to change and he was glad that Elijah seemed to want to do the same. “That would be great actually,” Henrik admitted, a smile working its way across his face as he looked over at his older brother. “I would say that we should invite Kol and Nik as well but I’m not sure how well that would go,” he admitted. He didn’t like the idea of leaving their two brothers out of it but Kol and Olivia didn’t exactly see eye to eye and he wasn’t sure just how Tatia or Lukas would react to Nik being there after the ritual. He knew that Tatia had forgiven Nik but that wasn’t quite the same as being expected to sit at the same dinner table as him and the last thing they wanted was for it to end up turning into a bloodbath so he knew that it might be better to keep things a little less complicated for the time being at least. Taking the glass from Elijah, Henrik couldn’t help but laugh as his brother spoke. “And how did that go?” he asked, genuinely curious. If he was honest he couldn’t remember the last time he had seen Elijah cook anything during the time they had been living together and more often than not when Henrik knew that he was going to be on his own for the evening he would just grab something to eat on his way home. It was a lot easier that way rather than just cooking for himself even if it wasn’t necessarily the healthiest option. It was a habit that he had fallen into while he was living in Hell with Crowley and his demons, he hadn’t been able to cook anything while he was there so he’d had to rely on whatever food the demons decided to bring him considering they had very rarely bothered listening if he had asked for anything specific. There were a few demons that he had become moderately friendly with who had been a lot more accommodating but for the most part he had hated being surrounded by them and it was a relief to be away from them now. Taking a sip of his drink, Henrik’s expression turned thoughtful for a moment. “I’ll give it a try if you tell me what you need me to do,” he shrugged as he set down his glass and picked up a knife instead. “How are things going between you and Tatia?” he asked as he began chopping up the carrots, hoping that things were going as well for his brother as they were for him right now. Family had been a difficult subject long before Henrik had begged Niklaus to take him out into the woods on the night of the full moon to see the men turn into wolves. They had been too young, too naïve, to know why then, to understand what grief over losing their oldest sibling had done to Esther. They had never considered that their mother could seek comfort in another man’s bed, although considering the callousness Mikael had already displayed it was no wonder. All they had known was the brutality their father wreaked upon their brother. Given that start in life it was no wonder their bond to one another had remained fragile and cracked over the centuries. Those cracks had only widened at times, leaving them distant and bitter towards one another. Elijah knew that Henrik had been doing his best to rebuild the bridges that had been shattered by Niklaus’ constant betrayals of them all but there was still some way to go. His own reunion with Kol had been fractious to say the least, his foolish drawing of Olivia into his plans proof that his own judgment could still not be trusted one hundred percent. It had been an attempt to force his brother into accepting an olive branch of sorts but hurt as he had been Kol had been closer to beating him with it than anything else. At least things with Henrik had been civil from the start, his youngest brother the only one amongst them who had a chance of reuniting a family who could not yet set aside a thousand years of poor judgment and selfishness.
Elijah sucked in a breath and let it out in a low sound of dubiety. The last time he had seen Niklaus had been when he’d arrived at the Grill to find his brother manhandling Tatia, before that he’d had his neck snapped for his attempt to free Kol from his coffin. They always found a way to put aside what had happened between them but Henrik was right, they weren’t yet there. A finger tapped lightly against the bottle of wine as he slowly nodded his head. ”That is perhaps a family gathering we can delay for a time. I’m not so sure it would be fair to subject Tatia and Olivia to that sort of family meal.” The sort that typically ended in blood shed and violence. A little more bridge building and perhaps they would be able to remain courteous for just a few hours trapped in the same room. Humour rolled in the grunt that Elijah gave. Dark eyes glittered as he caught his brother’s eye over the rim of the exchanged glass. ”Here, just fine,” he clarified. ”At the Boarding House the notion of a quiet breakfast for two is practically unheard of. It’s certainly living up to its name these days.” It was enough to make his head spin at times but seeing how happy Tatia was to be there, as a part of what could only be described as a vastly dysfunctional family made it all worth the constant interruption. Tonight it would just be him and Henrik at least and that meant he could put his brother to work. Elijah deftly picked up a paring knife, offering it hilt first. ”The carrots need peeling and then slicing on a diagonal, about a quarter inch thick,” he explained. He picked up a stem of broccolini, plucking the larger leaves from around the stem as his expression grew considerate. ”Better than I ever could have imagined,” he said eventually. ”And that was one of the things I wanted to speak about to you tonight. Tatia has made the decision that she wants to be turned.” No more sickness, no more ageing, the fragility that could take her from him as a human gone.

Henrik had spent years believing that his siblings had died a long time ago so it had come as a relief to learn that they were still alive after all. It wasn’t something that he had expected, nor had he expected to learn that all vampires had started with them but he wasn’t so worried about that. Running into Elijah during his first day in town had given him something that he hadn’t had for a long time – he had been given his family back. He knew now that Cas had looked after him while he was in Heaven and Crowley had looked after him when he was brought back, both of them becoming father figures to him in a way, but he had always been close to his brothers and sisters so learning that they and Lukas were all around really had been the icing on the cake. He hadn’t known why Crowley had pulled his soul out of Heaven and brought him back until then and for a while he had felt angry about the real reason behind it but he knew now that he couldn’t blame the demon. He had known that there was a fight brewing on the horizon and Henrik had been his bargaining chip to sway his siblings to join Crowley’s side. It hadn’t worked and Henrik knew that he could have turned his back on the demon completely but he wasn’t that kind of person and as far as he was concerned Crowley was family so he had been helping him in any way that he could. He was also living his life the way he wanted to, however. He no longer lived only to go on different missions for Crowley and for that he was glad. Slowly but surely he was trying to bring his family back together and he had plenty of other people that he cared about in town now too. It had been a surprise to run into Olivia again but when he had done so he had felt like he was truly home. Things were going so much better than he ever could have hoped for and he knew that he wanted that same happiness for his siblings as well. Elijah and Tatia seemed to be happy together, Nik had something going on with Hayley and he was pretty sure that Rebekah had a crush on Matt. The only one that seemed to be on his own right now was Kol but Henrik had a feeling that it was only a matter of time before that changed. For now he knew better than to worry about that, though, as he was certain that Kol would figure out all out in his own time the same way that he always did. Instead he wanted to enjoy an evening off work and catching up with Elijah seemed like the perfect way of doing just that. “I’m not sure it would either. Perhaps when things settle down a little we can organise something,” Henrik suggested. It would have been good to have a get together like Elijah had suggested but he knew that it wouldn’t feel right doing so without Nik and Kol so if it had to wait for a while then he knew that it would be for the best. As Elijah spoke again, Henrik couldn’t help but laugh. “I guess I’ll have to make myself scarce a little more often so the two of you can have this place to yourself then,” he chuckled. He knew that they would never actually ask him to do that but the idea of playing the third wheel when he was there wasn’t exactly appealing to him anyway. “Got it,” he nodded as Elijah told him what needed to be done before following his instructions. He wasn’t that used to cooking but he knew that he would give it a shot. Taking a sip of his drink, Henrik felt a smile work its way across his face as Elijah told him about Tatia’s decision. “That’s incredible news, I imagine you and Lukas must be thrilled.” He had seen just how scared the two of them had been of losing her again but by becoming a vampire there was less chance of that happening so even though it wasn’t going to be easy for Tatia it was good to know that she loved them enough to do that for them. “Have you decided when it is going to happen?”ELIJAH MIKAELSON

The life they had found together in the town that had once been home was a far cry from the one they’d lived a thousand years ago. An opportunity had been given to them all here, Niklaus included, although he had taken it with bloody hands rather than allowing it to come to him as it might’ve done. A chance to right the wrongs they had committed in their long lives, a chance to exist as they should’ve been allowed to without Esther’s foolhardy attempt to keep the rest of her children safe. Henrik had been returned to them, Tatia too, and even if the bridges the rest of them had burned had not yet been rebuilt, they all, without a doubt, would’ve given anything to have the two of them remain safe. Elijah wasn’t sure if his brother was prepared to halt his own aging, to perform the sort of spell that would leave him almost as impervious as the rest of them to the ravages of time, ill health and violence. Henrik would never be as they were and a part of him was certainly glad of that, but Elijah knew that he had as much to fight for here in Mystic Falls as the rest of them now and the big hearted brother they’d spent a thousand years mourning would not leave himself in a position to lose all of that if there was something he could do about it. Olivia was already much like they were, having lived a century, not looking like she had lived more than a third of that, capable of healing almost any wound thanks to what she had born. If Tatia had been blessed in the same way he would not have worried so much about her but Elijah knew that she was so much more fragile than that now, despite her strength. To keep her he would have to do the unthinkable.
But it was an unthinkable thing she had asked of him … and he had agreed. That decision would undoubtedly send a ripple of shock through his family but for the most part they would understand his desire to see her safe, at least Elijah hoped so. The bridges between them all would have to be mended eventually, the bond they shared always bringing them back together in the end, even if that peace only lasted for moments. Elijah nodded softly at his brother’s words, his lips pursing faintly as he considered it. ”It may take apologies on a few of our parts but those wounds will mend enough for us to have a single night at least.” For Henrik’s sake at least they would attempt to bite their tongues for a single night of civility. Perhaps their brother’s presence was all it would take to have them coming together truly for the first time in a thousand years, after all it was his lost that had put them on this path in the first place. Henrik’s laugh brought Elijah out of his thoughts again. ”I promise you, it’s not necessary,” he assured him softly. ”It is your home as much as it is mine and it’s truly been too long since the two of us have managed an evening here alone.” Even without what he’d needed to ask his brother, that much was true. Having put his brother to work Elijah moved on to cleaning the broccolini stalks and the question that had been weighing down his mind ever since he had come around to the idea of turning the woman he loved into a vampire. His throat working, Elijah nodded slowly. ”I imagine Lukas certainly is. He had no chance to prevent what happened before.” Now as a grown man with his mother newly returned to him, Elijah knew Lukas would have given everything he had to keep her. Dropping his gaze to the pile of vegetables, Elijah swallowed hard. ”This summer. I can do the turning myself of course but … there is something I wanted to ask of you …” he managed hoarsely. It was much to ask but if there was anybody he could ask it of, it was his brother.

Henrik knew that it was going to take time for the bridges to start to mend within his family but he could be patient and he seemed to have a good relationship with all of his siblings at least. He knew that a lot had happened over the last thousand years but at the end of the day they were still family and they stuck together no matter what happened. He would be lying if he said that he completely understood why Nik had kept Rebekah, Kol and Finn locked away in coffins for such a long time but he was slowly working on bring the family back together and he hoped that when he did manage it then they might finally be ready to set their differences aside. Nik’s argument was that he had been trying to protect them from the world but Henrik didn’t buy it. His siblings were all Original Vampires, they couldn’t be killed and were more than capable of looking out for themselves so Nik was going to have to come up with something better than that but Henrik had a feeling that his brother would find a way to talk himself out of it the same way he always did. At the end of the day they could never stay angry at each other for too long and it seemed that that hadn’t changed in the thousand years that had passed since he’d died. Henrik knew that he would feel much better when his family was back together once more but it was slow going and he knew that he needed to be patient. Olivia had a way of distracting him when he started to worry about his family too much and he couldn’t deny that he was glad about that. What had happened between them was unexpected but it was definitely a welcome surprise and he was making the most of their time together. He knew that he also needed to make sure that he and Elijah got to spend more time together, though, as it had been a while since they had last done so despite the fact that they lived together. Elijah often spent time with Tatia and Henrik had been spending a lot of time with Olivia so they didn’t see each other around too much and that was something that he knew they needed to change so he was glad that Elijah had taken the time to find out what his work schedule was like so that they could catch up. “We’ll get there in time,” Henrik nodded. They weren’t there just yet but he knew that it wouldn’t be that way forever. They had stuck together through everything while they were growing up and he was determined to remind his siblings of that now that they were in the same place. As Elijah said that he didn’t have to make himself scarce, Henrik couldn’t help but laugh. “Perhaps not but Olivia has her own place and from what you have said the Boarding House can be a little crowded at times so it wouldn’t be fair of me to make you feel like you couldn’t have time alone here too,” he shrugged. “We’ll make sure we get to spend more time together, don’t worry,” he added. He and Elijah had always been close and that definitely hadn’t changed. He hated the fact that they hadn’t been able to spend too much time together lately but he knew that they would figure something out. “There wasn’t anything that could have been done before but at least there is now. I’m glad Tatia is prepared to do that for you both,” he admitted, glad that the love his brother and best friend had for her seemed to be reciprocated just as strongly. “Go ahead, you can ask me anything.”ELIJAH MIKAELSON

A thousand years might have passed, dozens of lifetimes slipping past, usually with an agonizing slowness but there’d rarely been moments of such promise for the Mikaelsons. Brief snatches of happiness perhaps but other than Rebekah they all seemed to have lived through them constantly waiting for that happiness to dribble like water or sand through their fingers. Fate had made its choice for them on the day that Esther had bent it to her will and it hadn’t relented in its attempts to make them pay. Davina had warned that the ancestors were just as determined to see the Original family fall but for the moment there was still a sense that something this time was different. They had Henrik and Tatia back, they had a chance to settle here, to finally make amends for all that they had done, to this town and elsewhere. Having seen Henrik already give so much of himself to help those who had suffered here Elijah had been reluctant to ask more of him but for Tatia he knew he had to. Turning her himself was an easy enough matter, he had done it hundreds of times before and could do it for one of the most important people in his life, but there was still a fragility to those who had sprung forth from their blood. A simple pencil could kill them, wounds that he and his siblings could withstand deadly. Elijah knew he could do that again, watch her die, sit with the body of the woman he loved in his arms. It would take so much to achieve it but if Henrik could turn Tatia truly into one of them there would be an enormous weight off of his shoulders.
The meal was certainly overdue but as much as he thought it past time, it was an opportunity to ask more of his brother than he ever should have done. Esther had been desperate when she’d performed her ritual but they all had cooler minds now and so this was a big ask of the brother they had only just been reunited with. His pursed lips softening, Elijah nodded. ”We always do.” That had been their cycle since long before that night. Shattering might prove to be impossible but if there was ever a time to change it all, it was now. The afternoon he had taken Tatia out to the woods they had discussed just that, what she wanted to become, where she would live. She’d said it hadn’t been the time to move in together then but the way they were living couldn’t go on forever. Brows furrowing slightly, Elijah looked up at his brother and shook his head. ”Even if you were both living here it would not be that way.” The Boarding House was an entity unto itself. His frown eased as Henrik promised they would have more time together. They had both been through too much to let family slide. ”We will and you’ll have to make sure Olivia comes to visit from time to time.” It would be an excuse to cook again, an excuse to have family around at one of the most pivotal points of the last thousand years. His throat aching, Elijah tossed the green vegetables into a pot to steam. ”There may have been but there’s certainly nothing I can do to go back and change that now. All I can do is make sure that they both have the future they deserve.” Reaching for the carrots his brother had chopped to add them to the stew, Elijah paused. His dark eyes remained on the board. ”I want her to be more than just one of our progeny. To truly be protected Tatia should be one of us … an Original. I know it’s a lot to ask but there is perhaps a way…”

Henrik had spent centuries in Heaven completely alone aside from when Cas had decided to visit him and he hadn’t thought that that would ever change. He knew just how incredible it was that he had been given another chance to live and it was a chance that he fully intended on embracing. For too long he had let himself be used as nothing more than a pawn by Crowley, he had done everything that the demon had asked of him and it had taken finding out that his siblings were alive after all to give him the courage that he’d needed to say that enough was enough. Now he was free of all of that and he could do whatever he wanted. He knew that he could go just about anywhere in the world but Mystic Falls was where his family were and Olivia, Lukas, Allison, Ben and a lot of other people he cared about where there too so he knew that he wasn’t going anywhere. It had been a little strange when he had started working at the bar but it gave him a sense of normality in his life that he hadn’t really had since he was brought back. He liked to think that he had picked things up pretty quickly and Olivia had certainly seemed pleased with how he was doing but then again he had a feeling that she probably wouldn’t have told him even if he had been doing really badly. When he wasn’t at the apartment he and Elijah shared or at work most of his time was with her but he still made time to see everyone else as well. Things had worked out so much better than he had ever thought they would and he knew better than to take that for granted. His life had already been taken from him once and even though he was no longer the defenceless child that he had been before he’d died he still couldn’t shake the feeling that he might be living on borrowed time so he knew not to waste a minute of it. It really had been too long since he and Elijah had both been at the apartment at the same time so needless to say Henrik was eager to make up for lost time now. It had been a shock at first to learn that his siblings were still alive after such a long time but he had started reconnecting with them one by one and now it was almost as if the last thousand years hadn’t happened sometimes. He knew that it would take time for the rest of the family to put their differences aside and come together but he honestly believed that they would do so when it really mattered. “Elijah, as much as we’ve both enjoyed living together it’s ok to say that you need a space of your own sometimes,” Henrik assured his brother. He knew that it couldn’t be easy for him and Tatia to keep spending so much time at the Boarding House surrounded by so many other people even though it was Tatia’s home so if they wanted more time alone together at the apartment he knew that he would never blame them for that. He was fortunate in that Olivia had her own apartment so they didn’t have to worry about that so much but the last thing he wanted was to make things awkward for his brother. “I will. Just let me know when and I’ll make sure she’s there,” he nodded, knowing that Olivia wouldn’t mind one bit. “It would be good to see more of Tatia as well.” She was his brother’s girlfriend and his best friend’s mother but it felt like he hadn’t seen her for ages so he knew that that needed to change. Taking a sip of his drink as Elijah added the vegetables to the pot, Henrik studied his brother carefully for a minute. He couldn’t deny that he was surprised by Elijah’s request but he couldn’t deny that it made sense. “You want me to recreate the ritual mother used to turn you all into vampires,” he finished for his brother. “It makes sense, it’s the only way she’ll truly be protected from death the way you all are and I’ve seen the details in one of mother’s grimoires a few times. It won’t be easy and some of the ingredients aren’t going to be that easy to find but it is possible,” he nodded as his expression turned thoughtful for a moment. “Does Tatia know that this is what you want?”ELIJAH MIKAELSON

Space. It was one of the things he had yearned for when his life with his siblings had grown infinitely tangled. Their pattern had remained that way for centuries, locked together, living in one another’s pockets for years as they attempted to find somewhere to settle, somewhere to truly live while Mikael was off of their backs. Eventually that unity, that life, always grew claustrophobic. Their mistakes building, betrayals coming one after another until in the end their tempers were spilling over into everything around them. New Orleans, England, German. One place after another grew sour until in the end they spun off into separate lives again, sucking in air that felt like it had been denied to them. That sensation hadn’t risen yet in Mystic Falls but the cynical part of his mind had told him it would be time. Elijah had tried to convince himself that this time would be different and so far it had been but if they had learned anything in the thousand years they’d lived it was that nothing lasted forever. Elijah knew he could say that he would give anything to make certain that this time always and forever wasn’t a lie but even with what he was about to ask of his brother there were no guarantees. As an Original Tatia could not be killed by usual methods but there were other ways to suffer, to have the life that you had believed was finally going your way left a ruinous wasteland.
Family could do it to you. Love could do it to you. Elijah liked to believe that both of those had changed this time. There was a normality to their lives now, a silver lining to clouds that had long been pitch black. His youngest brother was home and finding a life of his own. Henrik’s wise words now had him smiling ruefully. ”I won’t deny that there has been a great deal of appeal to it but this is your home too and I won’t have you pushed out of it.” They would find their space, each of them now given the opportunity to do just that. Despite being ships in the night their lives would continue to bump up against one another’s now. A family coming together. Elijah’s smile softened at Henrik’s assurance. ”I’ll speak to her and we’ll definitely find a time that works.” Gradually the family would come together and the four at the table would grow, that much of a shiny happy future seeming possible at least for now. Domesticity suited them, he thought as he added the last of the ingredients to the stew and allowed it to bubble through the last of its cooking. The time it would take to finish cooking would give him an opportunity to check the weight off of his chest and make his request of his brother. Lips pinching into a thin line as his jaw worked, Elijah nodded tightly. ”I would have given anything to have her avoid feeling this hunger but not doing this … I could lose her again, Henrik could lose her.” The thought alone squeezed at his throat, left him reaching for his glass to take a convulsive gulp. Dark eyes lifted to his brother’s with hope in them. ”She asked to be turned but this? To truly become one of us? No. I didn’t want to offer what I didn’t know we could manage.” But Henrik had said it was possible. That meant she could be safe for an eternity, far from the harm that had already claimed her life twice.

Henrik knew all too well just how easy it was for a life to be taken. At only thirteen years old when he died his death had proved to be too much for his family and it had set into motion the chain of events that had resulted in his family becoming the first vampires the world had ever known. Henrik had never meant for that to happen, he had simply wanted to watch the men turn into wolves at least once in his life. That wish had been naive and misguided at the time and it had ended up turning the worlds of the people he cared about most upside down and it had caused a ripple effect that was still being felt now. So many lives had been changed and lost as a result of that one decision and he was doing his best to make up for that now by helping as many people as he could. Olivia and Elijah had both tried to make him see that he shouldn’t blame himself for what had happened but that was much easier said than done. Not a day went by when he didn’t think about it but Crowley had given him another chance and Henrik was trying to make the most of it by being there for as many people as he could. Slowly but surely he was working on reuniting his family once more and he was trying to make sure that no more innocent lives in Mystic Falls were lost. It felt like an impossible task at times but he was doing his best and he was trying to make sure that he took the chance to be truly happy with his own life while he was at it as well. He had fallen for Olivia and even though he hadn’t told her that yet she truly did mean the world to him and he knew that he would do whatever he could to make her and his family happy. “You wouldn’t be pushing me out of it, I promise,” Henrik assured his brother. More than anything he wanted Elijah and Tatia to be happy after everything they had been through together and if that meant him spending more time at Olivia’s so that they could have some more time alone together then Henrik had a feeling that Olivia really wouldn’t mind at all. It had taken them a while to give in to their feelings and get to where they were now but they were happy and he liked spending as much time with her as he could. “That sounds great,” he admitted. He knew that it was probably still a little strange for his brother given that the last time they had seen each other before they’d found each other again in Mystic Falls Henrik had only been thirteen years old but so much had changed since then and when it came to his life at least he knew that it was definitely for the better. He had never thought that Olivia would be interested in him as anything more than a friend but she was and he knew better than to take that for granted so he wanted her to get to know his family more too. Naturally the topic of conversation took a more serious turn but Henrik had a feeling that it was probably long overdue. He had known that something was bothering Elijah and now he finally knew what that was. As Elijah said that he and Lukas could both lose Tatia again, Henrik shook his head. “We won’t let that happen,” he promised his brother. “It will take time to recreate mother’s spell but I’ve seen it in her grimoires. I can do this for you, for Tatia and for Lukas. You won’t lose her again.”ELIJAH MIKAELSON

Home had not been this place in centuries. What had happened to soak the ground Mystic Falls had then stood on with blood had robbed the place of that. The five of them had fled, leaving life as they had known it behind, their loved ones gone, those of their blood that remained determined to chase them across the earth for an eternity. If there had been any semblance of home left Mikael had erased it. Nowhere had been safe for long, the pursuit constant until they were able to put him on the trail of the de Martels. There was still of guilt in his stomach over that but Elijah had resigned himself to the fact that guilt was no longer a thing he could hide in the darkest corners of his mind. He had to acknowledge it, shine light on it to truly make it shrink. Mystic Falls had offered them a home, a place to settle and make their own, at least for a time. It had returned some of those they had lost to them, given them opportunities. Hearing the name his littlest brother had once gifted to him on the lips of the dark haired young man had torn their future wide open. Crowley had his motives for bringing Henrik back, for trying to sway their family to his side, but that motives were of little consequence for the moment. This was a time for their family to rebuild. With Henrik sharing his apartment they had been able to do that before the roots of their lives here had started to spread further.
His conscience had prickled at that too but Elijah knew that the one thing they certainly had here was opportunity. It might take some changes but if Henrik wanted to be here more he would be willing to make them. This was home after all. Elijah’s rueful smile melted into something touched with gratitude. ”It will still always be open to you,” he promised back. ”This is your home.” Theirs, not just because it was where they lived, but because their family had started to come back together. Anywhere they were, that was going to be home from now on. He’d intended to give Henrik a taste of what had once been home tonight but gathering together with Olivia and Tatia with the intention of one day making that group grow again with the rest of their family would only make it more so. Elijah nodded at his brother’s admission, drawing in a breath. They would make it happen one way or another. Perhaps before … Once, if, Tatia was turned, there would be less enjoyment in food than she’d had before. The memory of it would always linger but things would change for her as it had for them, if they could do what he hoped. Henrik’s promise loosened the knot that had tightened in Elijah’s gut as he’d stirred and stumbled his way through his hopes for the woman he had long loved. He reached for his brother’s shoulder as he set his glass down, squeezing lightly. ”I know you would all fight to make sure that doesn’t happen but I would not want it to even come to that,” he said hoarsely, not if there was a way he could entirely prevent it. Elijah sucked in another deep breath, swallowing away the lump in his throat. ”We would all appreciate it,” he admitted. Clearing his throat, Elijah tried to muster up a smile. ”You should grab some bowls. The stew is about done. Are you ready for a little taste of childhood?” One of the better parts of it, Elijah adjusted in his head, a memory of a time that wasn’t about the bark of Mikael’s voice or the tremble that ran through them all when violence had shattered their family.
