Early mornings were something that Brady was used to but not quite this early after he had spent most of the night searching for Mel and the others. Things were finally starting to take their toll on the Alpha but he was doing his best to stay strong for the rest of the pack, especially Liam, and he knew better than to let any of them see just how much it was getting to him. Instead he was doing his best reassure them that everything was going to be fine even if there were times when he was starting to doubt that himself. He knew that he couldn’t give up on his pack though, he hadn’t asked to become their Alpha and it wasn’t something that he necessarily wanted but he’d had no choice but to kill their previous Alpha when he had lost his mind and wiped out half of their pack. Now it was his responsibility to keep the others safe and it was something that he took really seriously. Now that his parents were gone the truth was that they were all that he had left. It felt right being back in Mystic Falls after everything that had happened in New Orleans, Julian was still in town so Brady had his best friend back and he knew that he just had to believe that in time things would start going their way, they had to. Now it seemed like he was finally going to get some closure about what had happened to his parents, though, and he could see the realisation in Alix’s face as well. He hadn’t known much about what his mom’s side of the family was like but he had known enough. He had wondered if they’d had something to do with what had happened to his parents ever since he’d found the photo in their home but he hadn’t wanted to say anything to Liam until he knew for sure. He would do everything in his power to keep Liam and Mel safe even if that meant having to keep what had really happened from them for the time being. Right now there were plenty of things that he needed to focus on and making sure that Alix knew what had happened was definitely one of them. “They killed their own sister because of who she fell in love with,” Brady nodded. He didn’t doubt that they would have killed him, Liam and Mel too if they had been home but thankfully they weren’t there and for that he was grateful. “Maybe but they were still behind it, I know they were,” Brady shrugged. It didn’t matter that his parents bodies had been taken from their home and that wasn’t his uncles’ style, they were the only ones who would have wanted to go after his parents so there wasn’t a doubt in his mind that they were responsible. For a moment Brady debated on whether or not to tell Alix the truth about what had happened but if she looked into his past then she would be able to figure it out anyway so he knew that there wasn’t any point in keeping it from her. “It happened a few years ago. I killed someone in self defence I’ve been like this ever since,” he explained. “How about you?” he asked, knowing that she wouldn’t have been born this way the way that he had been. ALIX QUINN

What she’d known of her own family had been so certain. She’d known that ten generations from now they would likely still be hunting, the Quinn name carried on by her brothers’ herd of kids. She’d known that they would see her as a monster the minute she lost enough control in front of them for her eyes to flash yellow or her claws to emerge. She’d known that they wouldn’t let her live, not like that. A monster in their own ranks, unthinkable. Hoping that it would be enough distance she’d packed up her car and run with barely a word. Alix knew that it would’ve confused them, would’ve pissed Rohan off at the very least. He’d always been the steady one, the person she knew she could rely on most no matter what but now even the rock steady part of her life seemed to be crumbling at her feet. This wasn’t how any of this conversation was supposed to have gone. It should’ve been her solidifying her existence in this town, getting back to what she’d sworn to do. Now Alix found herself looking at her cousin with dread. She couldn’t feel the ground beneath her feet anymore, just that sickening weight settling on her chest, leaving it harder to breath than when his hand had been around her throat. She wasn’t the monster in her family, not the biggest one at least. That prize went to Ralphy and her dad by extension, any respect she had left for either of them falling like sand through her fist.
They were murderers. She wanted to go down to her knees at the though, her hands fisting on the blacktop as the nausea spilled her stomach contents out. Bile burned in the back of her throat like her tears burned in her eyes. Her eyes closed, the tears breaking over her lower lashes as she lowered her head for a moment. ”Ralphy maybe but my dad …” He would’ve just seen a monster too, and someone he had loved corrupted by it. Her mouth twisting bitterly, Alix sniffed and looked up. ”It wouldn’t be the first time with Ralphy. He … he sent me after someone else a Quinn had gotten close to, someone like us.” Derek had stopped her. That heart wrenching moment as he’d grabbed for the gun she had at the back of his skull, stopping her finger from tightening that last millimetre and blowing his brains all over the sidewalk. ”I didn’t know…” she breathed, like that was going to be any comfort for family killing family. Alix lifted a hand, dragged it over her hand, back into her hair. Green eyes ticked up to meet his. ”I was 19,” she managed hoarsely. ”I was on a hunt at a high school, kids were disappearing. I went undercover and I disappeared too. I was gone for a week and when I came back …” She gestured up at her eyes as they flashed blue again. ”Werecoyote. No bite from an alpha, no genetic curse broken. The things that took me, they did this.” They had taken her cousin, the rest of Brady’s missing pack members too. She was pretty damn certain of that but why the hell would he believe her when she said that now. She was the daughter of the enemy after all.

Even before Mel and the others were taken to Mystic Falls, Brady had felt like it was time for them to return to their old home. He and his siblings were born and raised in Mystic Falls and he had honestly thought that they would never leave but then his dad had been offered a new job in New Orleans and by that time Brady had jumped at the chance to start over. Finding out that his girlfriend was cheating on him with one of his best friends had broken his heart and it had made him want to do something reckless. Had that not happened then he wasn’t sure whether he would have ended up going on the trip to Ecuador with his friends but at the end of the day everything that had happened had helped shape the man that he was today. He knew that he wasn’t perfect, in fact half the time he only pretended to know what he was doing, but at the end of the day he was doing his best to protect his family and his pack and he knew that he couldn’t do any more than that. He hadn’t asked for any of this to happen and he knew that Liam would be much happier if their parents were back in the picture but they had been killed and Brady was only now starting to find out a bit more about what had happened. The photo had been enough to make him start to suspect what had really happened and he had been looking into that a little more after he’d found some old diaries of his mom’s from when she was a kid going all the way through to the time she met his dad but he still hadn’t been sure until now. “Are you sure about that?” Brady asked, finally removing the hand that was still holding Alix’s throat as he saw the tears in her eyes. It wasn’t the tears that stopped him, it was the fact that the realisation of what the rest of the family were actually capable of doing to one of their own seemed to have finally hit her. Brady knew that he could so easily be next if they found out about him if they didn’t know already but, then again, so could Alix. In a way she was in a worse position than he was given that she was quite literally in the lion’s den and just one slip up from either of them could see them meeting the same fate that his parents had. “Some people just can’t see beyond what a person is but the world is changing and if they don’t catch up then they’ll be left behind.” There was a time when Brady had thought that the world was black and white but ever since he’d triggered his curse his eyes had been opened up to a whole new side of New Orleans and it was the same in Mystic Falls. There were supernaturals in abundance in both places and not all of them were interested in hurting others, most just wanted to live their lives in peace but they would fight to protect that if they had to. As Alix spoke again, Brady’s expression softened slightly. “I’m sorry,” he said sincerely. “Do you know who they are?” he asked, his mind already reeling at the thought that they might be the same people that had taken Mel and the others. Hysteria wanted to break through. She’d been on the brink of it since he’d recognised her name and this whole thing had started to go sideways. Sanity crumbling, disappearing through her fingers like sand. She’d built the shaky bedrock of her life on what she’d thought she’d known about her family and now her cousin was standing there, shattering in it with blunt, brutal blows. So much of it she would’ve believed from Ralphy if it had been anybody but his own sister but her dad … he’d always taken a hard line and she’d been terrified that his hand would be the one on the weapon that killed he … she’d just never seen him doing that. There was so much certainty in Brady’s voice and no way she could argue against it. Her family had killed their own, not because they’d become a monster, but because they’d chosen to fall in love with one.
Her eyes cut towards Derek’s building as Brady let go of her throat. Alix sucked in a breath, her hand coming up to massage the bruise ringing her neck, the one that would already be fading. She couldn’t look back at him, not with the tears burning in her eyes the way they were. ”You know I’m not,” she rasped hoarsely. ”I don’t want to believe it of him. He was always tough, never gave anybody who wasn’t just as human as him an inch of space but your mom … she wasn’t …” Her eyes flicked up to his then, what she meant obvious. Brady’s mother hadn’t been a werewolf. She’d just had the poor judgment to love one in her father’s eyes. Bitterness shone in her smile as she finally met Brady’s eye again. ”The Quinns have been perpetuating that attitude for hundreds of years. I’ve got four brothers. All they’re hearing now is my dad and Ralphy’s message. They’re not going to know any better.” The thought that Rohan would be forced to do the same left her feeling like something inside of her was being torn open.
Alix stepped away, wanting to pace but not trusting she wouldn’t end up back against the truck with Brady’s hand back around her neck and spots dancing in front of her eyes. He sounded so genuine when he apologised. She leaned back against the truck, resisting the urge to let her knees give out and skid down to the blacktop. ”Kind of. I know what they are.” No faces, no matter how hard she tried to remember them or even when she’d been there’d always been this black hole. A gaping, stomach churning black hole. ”They call themselves the Dread Doctors. They’ve been doing this a long time and they’re experts at not letting anybody get too close to what they’re doing.” Alix rubbed her hands down the thighs of her jeans, her throat working as she remembered what it had been like to wake up and see those claw marks on the floor. ”We were looking into them when it happened, I assumed that was why they took me. Now I’m wondering … was me making noise about us not being right in killing everything, monster or not, too much for Ralphy and my dad to let go?” The thought made those tears burn in her eyes again. A punishment for pushing back against the family. She could believe it of Ralphy but God, was her dad so far gone that he would do that to his own child?

Ever since his parents died Brady had wanted answers. He had always known that it wasn’t a coincidence that he had found the photo of his mom with her two older brothers lying on the floor after it all happened but he hadn’t known that much about her family other than the few things she’d told him and the few snippets of conversations that he’d heard going on between his parents when they thought that he was asleep or in another part of the house. It was only after she died that he had found one of her old journals and from that he’d learned more than he had ever thought possible. His mom’s family were hunters and she and his dad had run off after they had fallen in love. His dad was a werewolf so their relationship never would have been understood and Brady knew that he, Mel and Liam would have been born with targets on their backs if they’d stuck around too. As it was he was certain that his mom’s past had caught up with her in the end and that it was what had caused the deaths of her and his dad and he knew that if he ever met either of his uncles and found out which one of them was responsible if it wasn’t a joint decision then he would make them regret it. Alix seemed to think that it would have been Ralphy rather than her dad but Brady wasn’t so sure, all he knew was that from his mom’s journal it had seemed like Ralphy was the one that she feared the most. “My mom was human but she fell in love with a werewolf and gave birth to three children who carry the gene. I guess in their eyes it meant that she had to die,” Brady said, just the thought making him sick to his stomach. Brady had already taken two lives, first he had killed the man that was sent to kill him while he was being held captive in Ecuador and then he had killed his previous Alpha after the guy went on a killing spree and wiped out half of the pack. Brady didn’t like killing and he knew that he never would but now that their parents were gone it was his job to keep his siblings and his pack safe. He knew that he had already failed Mel, after all she had been taken by someone and brought to Mystic Falls and he still had yet to find her, but he refused to give up or let anything like that happen again. “You grew up hearing that same message and you don’t seem like just another mindless hunter who’ll kill anyone that isn’t human,” he offered. He wasn’t sure about her brothers but if Alix was able to defy those odds then he hoped that her brothers, his cousins, would be able to as well. Not only did Alix have insight into their family that Brady needed but she also seemed to know who was responsible for taking Mel and the others and that was enough to spark Brady’s interest. If he knew who was responsible then he could figure out a way to get them all back. He would be lying if he said that the protective part of him wasn’t already starting to extend to Alix now that he knew that she had been taken by the same people who had taken Mel and the others but he had a feeling that she could take care of herself. “They hate anyone who isn’t human, do you really think that they would hand you over to these Dread Doctors knowing that they would turn you into something that they would hate?” he asked, certain that Alix was more likely to know the answer to that question than he was. There was a chance that they might have decided to hand her over as a way of getting her to fall into line and it certainly seemed to have worked for a while but now the truth was coming out and he hoped that she would stand up to them once and for all. “Do you know where Mel and the others might have been taken?” he asked, hoping that she might at least be able to point him in the right direction. There was a taint that came with being something supernatural. Alix knew that other hunters had their own rules about it. They expected those who were infected, turned somehow, to do the decent thing and deal with themselves. From what she’d known, nobody in the Quinn family had ever gotten themselves into that situation in the first place. She’d been the first and instead of doing that decent thing she’d run. It looked like her aunt hadn’t been turned but it didn’t matter, she’d had guilt by association. She hadn’t just fallen in love with a werewolf, she’d married him, she’d had kids with him. Alix could only imagined how it had stuck in Ralphy’s throat, in her dad’s.
Bile tried to push its way back up her throat at the thought. She could picture her uncle with his finger on the trigger all too easily. And her dad’s. It was an image she’d fought so hard to keep out of her mind ever since she’d been turned but now Brady was putting it there and she couldn’t get rid of it.
Alix gritted her teeth, shaking her head. She wanted to scream a denial of it but couldn’t find the words. She swallowed back that burning in her throat instead. ”She bought three monster kids into the world, that’s more than enough of an excuse for them,” she managed hoarsely. The word them burning on her tongue. ”She chose a monster over them.” That would’ve been worse than her becoming one by accident. It had been a choice, a walking away from family. She’d done just the same in a way. Alix’s stomach wanted to rebel. Staying hadn’t been an option but running away only to have Ralphy reach out and leash her months later hadn’t been one either. The only one that would’ve been tolerated by her family was her taking her own life and it was never something she’d ever be able to seriously consider. Even the bitter smile fell from Alix’s lips as she pinched them together and shook her head. ”I saw people who weren’t that different from us. People who were just trying to live decent lives. People like that weren’t hurting people, they didn’t deserve to lose a life for taking one.” Ralphy had forced her to work against her beliefs though.
Curling her hands into her palms, Alix tried to push the image of them now soaked in innocent blood from his mind. It was because of Ralphy that she’d done it, because of the thing the Dread Doctors had turned her into. Left to her own devices she would’ve gladly walked away from all of it, retreated to another homestead, another place in the middle of nowhere where she could live through her lens.
Maybe if she’d put two and two together before now she wouldn’t have been sucker punched so badly by the thought that her uncle and dad had perhaps had a role in her being taken. Alix bent, sucking in a breath as a blink sent tears rolling over her lashes. ”I don’t know … my dad no but Ralphy … he knew.” Her heart started to race as she tried to straighten up, her chest heaving. ”I didn’t tell anybody when I left. I blamed the arguments I had with my dad about h-how we were hunting. Ralphy knew though. He called me, he threatened to tell my dad what I was. He knew I’d give in just to avoid them knowing.” The cogs were spinning now. She straightened, starting to pace as she shook her head. ”N-not here,” she said on a shuddering breath. ”They always have a lab, somewhere to h-hold people. I’ve found some elsewhere after they’ve left but couldn’t trace anything here.” She’d looked, in the woods, in the warehouse district, anywhere dark and quiet enough to give them the peace they obviously needed.

This definitely wasn’t how Brady had thought that his early morning call from someone who needed help with their vehicle would end up going. He wasn’t used to being out that early unless he was returning home after a full moon or he was out searching for his sister and the others but he had known that he couldn’t turn down the call no matter how tired he was so instead he had headed out and ended up finding someone who was apparently family. Brady had never met anyone outside of his direct family but he had found a photo after his parents were killed that had shown his mom standing with her brothers and it had their names and a date written on the back. He had heard his mom talking about her family before and she had warned him about them when he’d returned home after triggering his curse. The fact that they hadn’t gone after his family while all of the media coverage of his abduction was going on really was a miracle but their mom’s past had caught up with her eventually anyway. There wasn’t a doubt in his mind that at least one of his uncles was responsible for his parents’ demise and he knew that he wasn’t going to stop until the man was unable to hurt anyone else. Brady and his family had never deliberately hurt anyone, they had all been doing their best to live their lives in peace but that hadn’t mattered to the rest of the family and that thought alone was enough to make Brady feel angry. “Three monster kids who didn’t even want to trigger their curses in the first place. I had no choice but Mel and Liam are innocent, neither of them has triggered their curse and they’re doing everything they can to make sure that they don’t,” Brady explained. He wasn’t sure how much Alix knew about him or his family so he knew that it was best to avoid going into details just yet but that much he could tell her at least. “My dad wasn’t a monster either, he triggered his curse but he was a good man. He didn’t deserve what they did to him any more than my mom did.” Brady’s parents had always done their best to be there for him even after he had tried to push them away after he got back. He hadn’t felt like he could open up to anyone about what had happened for quite a while but they had refused to give up on him and he was grateful to them for that. “You’re right, they don’t,” he nodded as Alix said that people like that didn’t deserve to die. “The amount of people like us who want to hurt others is small in comparison to those who don’t but a lot of people only see what we become, not who we really are.” Brady’s old alpha had turned out to be a monster, he had turned on his own pack and wiped half of them out just so that he could become more powerful before Brady was able to stop him but just because one werewolf was like that it didn’t mean that they all were. As Alix explained what had happened to her, Brady’s expression turned thoughtful for a moment. “Do you think he had something to do with what happened to you?” he asked, knowing that he wouldn’t be surprised at all if what Alix had told him about their uncle was anything to go by. As she explained about the people who might be responsible for taking his sister and the others, Brady nodded. “Do you know what kind of place they normally go for?” he asked, knowing that if she had an idea about that then it would give him a better idea of where to start. She couldn’t argue with Brady. She had tried at first, looking to give her dad the benefit of the doubt but even without the evidence he swore he had against them Alix knew he was right. Her dad would have done it, Ralphy would’ve relished it. He’d held what had happened over her head for the last three years, somehow aware of what she had become, happy to exploit what she could do while threatening to tell her parents. That mental image had hit her right in the chest, leaving her breathless every time. Her dad’s face behind the gun, his green eyes cold, his expression a brutal mask. The love he had for his family wouldn’t matter a bit, only the monster they had become, or the one they could be.
Alix’s lips were bloodless as she looked up at Brady. That made two of them who’d had no choice. She’d never wanted to become what she had but the things that had taken her from the school hadn’t exactly asked permission and Ralphy … God. That breathless feeling struck her again, that painful squeezing in her chest. ”They weren’t the only innocents,” she rasped. ”I didn’t get a choice either. I wasn’t born with the chance that I would even trigger anything.” It wasn’t accidental, she hadn’t stepped on that proverbial landmine trying to protect someone else or herself. She’d blacked out human and had woken up this thing.
That icy feeling was back in the pit of her stomach. The urge to bend over, to try and wrap herself up in a ball to stop her stomach from churning and to force heat back into a body that wanted to shiver strong. Alix swallowed, blinked those tears from her eyes. ”None of us deserved it. I’m sorry you lost your parents, I’m sorry that your dad had to go through that first.” The man who had helped give her life hadn’t seen things the same way and Alix doubted he ever would. Seth Quinn had been raised to see everything non-human as monstrous. Living normal lives or not they were capable of killing, of destroying, and that instantly put a target on their backs. For his own sister to have chosen that rather than her own family had to have twisted something inside of him. The smile that had managed to break out on her face had been bitter but even that was gone now. ”The tip of the ice berg but that’s all people see and so they think of us as being all the same. Do you know how many are hiding here?” She didn’t want to know to carry out the same wholesale slaughter as her family, was just trying to make a point.
One by one Ralphy had slowly been lowering that number, using her as the weapon. Alix curled her fingers into her palms as she began to explain her own story, claws pricking at the tender skin, her heart feeling like they were burying deep in the flesh there too. The tears streaming, Alix smiled sadly, bitterly at Brady. ”If what you’re saying’s true … and I do believe you … I know he did. He’s spent too much time crowing about it for me to think he was innocent in the whole thing. I never told anybody about what I was, at least then. Nobody would’ve known except for the things that took me … and whoever arranged for me to get taken in the first place.” The knowledge sat in her stomach like a brick, slowly weighing down with enough force for her to feel the cracks working through the heart of her like a porcelain doll shattering. Her legs felt weak as she paced up and down the side of the truck, her fingers numb as she tangled them in her hair and pulled hard. ”Out of the way. Someone they can set up as a lab. Abandoned buildings, warehouses. In Austin it was a condemned school. I’ve … I’ve tried looking here, time and time again but there’s no sign. This town has secrets it won’t give up.” People and places hidden. Centuries of keeping what people shouldn’t have seen buried deep.

“Apparently being cursed in one way or the other runs in the family,” Brady shrugged. He could tell that Alix was being sincere when she said that she hadn’t had a choice in the matter either, she didn’t seem to want this anymore than he did but at the end of the day they couldn’t go back and change what had happened to them so all they could do was try and make the best of it. It had ended up being somewhat of a whirlwind for Brady considering that he had become an Alpha when he killed his previous Alpha to stop him from wiping out the rest of the pack and now he had a lot more responsibility to shoulder than he had ever thought that he would when he was younger but life was unpredictable and that was something that he had definitely figured out the hard way. “If I ever meet our uncle, I’ll kill him for what he did to them,” Brady said, a warning note in his voice as he spoke. The house had been covered in blood and their bodies were nowhere to be found. There wasn’t a doubt in Brady’s mind that his parents were dead, there was too much blood to explain in any other way, but he also knew that the way in which they’d died had been brutal and he knew that there was no way he was going to let their uncle get away with it. From what Alix had told him he wouldn’t be surprised if the guy was still gloating about what he had done now but Brady knew that it was only a matter of time before he wiped that smug smile off the guy’s face once and for all. “Of course they do. What they don’t see is that by thinking of us all the same way they’re the ones who are the real monsters,” he shrugged. “I don’t know exactly how many there are but there are a lot. More than in New Orleans even I think,” he admitted. Mystic Falls seemed to draw the supernatural to it for some reason so naturally there were a lot there but there were bound to be plenty who liked to keep what they were to just a small circle of close friends so it was impossible to know for sure how many there were. With the amount of deaths that seemed to litter the news each week Brady wouldn’t be surprised if that number had dwindled somewhat but there were still plenty left and he had a feeling that there were probably more on their way as well. “I’m sorry,” Brady said sincerely as Alix said that the only people who had known about what she was back then were the people who took her and whoever arranged it. “It seems like he’ll stop at nothing to get what he wants and even sacrificing his own family isn’t off the table,” he added. The guy was terrible, that much was for sure, and he couldn’t deny that he regretted the fact that Alix had ended up getting caught in the crossfire the same way that his own parents had. For a moment he wondered whether his uncle could have been responsible for what had happened back in Ecuador but he refused to think like that, he couldn’t. Nodding as Alix spoke again, Brady’s expression turned thoughtful for a moment. “There are ways to find out answers to those questions, you just need to know where to look,” he said at last. “I grew up here before I moved to New Orleans,” he added, knowing that he had better explain. “There are a few places I can think of that might fit the bill.”ALIX QUINN

She was sure Brady hadn’t meant it as any sort of a joke, but as he shrugged off the comment, Alix wanted to laugh. The only reason it ran in her veins was Ralphy. If he’d kept his hands to himself this likely never would’ve touched them. He could’ve chalked his sister’s choice to marry a werewolf up to making a foolish choice and left her to it, but it seemed as though there had never been a pie her uncle didn’t want to stick his finger in. Ralphy had damned them all, he just didn’t know about some of that yet. When she broke free of him she was going to turn on him. It wasn’t as though her eyes would shine a different colour after Ralphy lay there going cold. He’d made sure they were glowing blue years ago, in his final moments that cerulean glow would be all that Ralphy saw.
In the end.
For now the choke chain still stretched tight around her throat. Any minute now Ralphy could yank on it the same way he had when she’d let Derek too close. Those eyes he seemed to have on her at all times fixing on the parking lot here. He’d probably love to pit his niece and nephew against one another, never believing that they’d turn on him instead. ”You’re gonna have to join the line. I’m not gonna run if he comes looking.” If was the operative word for both of them. Ralphy obviously hadn’t survived this long by doing all the work himself. He’d killed his own sister, but after that he’d thrown both hands in the air, letting his shackled niece do it all for him instead. Alix looked up at Brady’s face, knowing that if the order came in she’d throw her gun down. Let Ralphy do his worst. Her lips pressed together tightly against the nausea that boiled in her throat. ”You’ll never be able to count them all. You’re right, they’re the monsters, but all they see is us. It makes them feel better to stamp us out, stops them looking too deeply at themselves.” It had her for a time, when all she’d believed was what her parents had told her, but now she knew all of that was bull. The real truth stood in front of her, red eyes and all.
Ralphy would’ve made Brady out to be a monster, but there was enough good in her cousin that the apology that slipped from his lips felt genuine. She’d tried to defend her family just a few short minutes ago, but the pieces Brady had offered up fit so closely together with her own unfinished puzzle that there was no other explanation. She sniffed back the tears, trying to lift her chin with pride. ”He’s not going to stop, but neither am I. Ralphy made a mistake when he handed me over, all it’s done is given me more power to use against him, and I’m planning to do just that if I can.” Her brothers might never find out the truth, but at least someone in her family knew it now and if Ralphy or the Docs did put a stop to her, someone would keep coming.
For now she continued to stand on her own two feet, even if the tremors continued to run through them too. She tried to pace it off, green eyes ticking to Brady as she turned to take another lap. ”Promise me you won’t go and check them out on your own. They need to be taken down, but not at the cost of them getting their hands on you. Do you know what they could do with an alpha?” A shudder ran down her spine. The worst that could happen to her was mercury pouring from her body when they finally rid themselves of her as a niggly little problem. An alpha’s power though? They wouldn’t just change Brady, they’d bleed him dry of it all, twisting that power until it was unrecognisable.

“Neither am I. A lone werecreature is powerful but that’s nothing compared to an Alpha. If he thinks either of us will be easy to stop then he can think again,” Brady growled. He knew that he would make his uncle pay for killing his parents, there wasn’t a doubt in Brady’s mind about that. The guy hadn’t just killed two people who hadn’t deserved it that day, he had made the three of them orphans as well. Brady had stepped up and become his siblings’ legal guardian after their parents died but he would be the first to admit that he had no idea what he was doing, he pretty much spent every day hoping that he wasn’t screwing up too badly. He was still getting used to being an Alpha when his parents died and he had suddenly gone from being just a big brother to a parent as well. Everything had changed that day and he knew that his uncle really wouldn’t like the outcome if their paths eventually did cross. “You’re right about that. They forget that at the end of the day we’re all people too, hopefully sooner or later someone will open their eyes to that but I won’t hold my breath,” Brady shrugged. Some people were just too far gone to ever change and he knew even without meeting him that his uncle was one of those people. Brady had learned a long time ago that there were some awful people in the world and that opinion was never going to change but there were some good people as well and right now his gut was telling him that Alix might just fall into that category. She didn’t seem like she was a threat to him, his siblings or his pack and even though he didn’t know her very well so there was every chance that he could be wrong about that, there was something about her that he could relate to and it was enough to have a genuine apology leaving his lips. “I wish I could say I’m surprised but I’m not,” Brady admitted as Alix said that their uncle wasn’t going to stop. “Let me know where and when and I’ll be there. He won’t stand a chance against both of us,” Brady said fiercely, knowing that even though he was doing his best to be a good brother and Alpha and not let his anger get the better of him he would like nothing more than to rip his uncle apart right now. Alix seemed anxious and Brady couldn’t blame her but he met her gaze levelly when she turned to look at him, considering her words for a moment before nodding. “Alright, you’ve got a good point there,” he conceded at last. “I promise I won’t go after them alone but promise me that you won’t go after them or out uncle alone either. I’ve got your back and so will my pack. There’s strength in numbers,” he offered, hoping that she would take him up on the offer. Alix was family and if Brady’s suspicions about being able to trust her proved to be right then there was no way that he was going to let her face any of this on her own. ALIX QUINN

Ralphy, her parents, her brothers, they’d all trained for decades, learning off the back of the generations of hunters that had come before them. They’d all taken down Alphas in their time, had probably slaughtered whole packs before they’d even raised a finger towards their own blood. It didn’t make them infallible though. Alix supposed she was proof of that. She’d been snatched without time to even realise what was happening. That could happen to them too, and this time the fight would be personal. It seemed as though Brady was already planning what would happen when the fight came here. The two of them fighting alone or in some sort of united line. The thought alone left her feeling sick, but Alix nodded at his words. ”I don’t think he’d be stupid enough to run straight in, he knows better than that. He’ll fight sneaky.” And that had a chance of getting under both of their defences.
Alix knew that there were chinks in her own armour that Ralphy would willingly exploit. Maybe Brady’s was thicker, even if it had cracked openly faintly for her now, letting her see more than she supposed anybody else would’ve done. Her smile curled her lips for just a moment but it wasn’t enough to reach her eyes. ”For my dad, for Ralphy, I don’t think anything’s gonna change that, but maybe with my brothers there’s a chance.” And that was what had her curling her fingers into her palms, like if she held onto that idea tight enough it would come true. A kid’s wish with about as much power as the ones she’d made on those rare birthdays when they’d really celebrated with cakes and candles – and the sort of sharp and dangerous gifts completely unsuitable for children. She still had the camera though, the one part of Rohan she’d taken with her and used.
Holding onto herself had been important. She could’ve been just who Ralphy had tried to make her, but she’d refused to give into that. She’d rather stop hunting all together, let someone else deal with the nightmares out there. Her uncle hadn’t been willing to let her do that though. Ralphy had kept that leash on her, dragging her back into this. One day she’d bite that hand though, she’d force him to stop it. Her expression turned wry, her lips pursing as she looked up at her cousin. ”I wish I could say he hadn’t surprised me with the whole thing.” She’d been sucker punched by the whole thing, again when Ralphy had forced her to start killing, a third time when he’d almost forced her to kill Derek. Alix hunched her shoulders, almost feeling the former werewolves gaze on her from the building that overlooked the lot where they stood now. ”Thank you,” she said honestly, nodding. Maybe Brady was right, she had to learn to trust that someone was.
The longer they stood here talking, the greater her anxiety grew. Alix continued to pace as Brady nodded at her. Her fingers refused to shake as she offered up her hand at least. ”You’ve got my word, and I’ll take the help of your pack. If I figure any more of this out, I’ll know who to call.” The pacing stopped, her chin coming up towards her car with a trace of chagrin on her face. ”Are you gonna be able to get the truck running? It wasn’t all a ploy to get you here. I made a mistake … left myself without a ride.” All when she tried to get Derek Hale to play right into her hands and look how that had gone.
