During the years that he had spent with Crowley Henrik had felt sure that he would never get the chance to live a normal life. For too long he had let himself be content with letting Crowley tell him what to do, it had been easier doing that than it was to accept the fact that everyone he had ever known was dead, and there hadn’t been that many people around that he could have grown close to. For the most part he despised demons, he had spent years surrounded by them and he knew that the majority of them were mindless drones who simply existed to do Crowley’s bidding and Henrik hadn’t wanted to turn into someone like that. Whenever he’d had the chance he had escaped so that he could spend some time on Earth and learn more about just how much things had changed but it was only when he met Olivia that things had really started to fall into place. She had quickly become a friend and they had helped each other out of a tight spot which had only ended up bringing them closer. After they parted ways he had felt sure that he would never get the chance to see her again but she too had ended up in Mystic Falls and not a day went by when Henrik wasn’t glad about that. It had been easy to reconnect with her after he learned that his siblings were alive after all and knowing that he wasn’t all alone in the world like he had been led to believe had made it that much easier to really let her in. He hadn’t expected for things to develop into anything more than friendship but the flirty banter that always seemed to pass between them was something that was easy to fall into and before he had really realised what was going on it was too late. He knew what Olivia had been through with George and he knew that he would never be able to replace her husband but being around her made him happy and that was something that he selfishly wanted more of so keeping his distance even when he knew it would probably be safer for her if he did just hadn’t been an option. Keeping it to himself wasn’t easy but the truth was Henrik hadn’t felt ready to talk to anyone. He knew that Elijah or Rebekah would have understood and would have likely been able to give him some advice but this was unchartered territory for the warlock and it was something he had felt sure that he needed to figure out on his own. He was fairly certain that Elijah had already figured it out but he hadn’t said anything and for that Henrik was grateful. The person he needed to speak to was Olivia but the truth was that just the thought was enough to make him feel nervous so he knew it would be best to wait. Instead it was easy to just enjoy her company and he couldn’t help but laugh as she spoke. “I wouldn’t try and stop you,” he chuckled. When it came to Olivia he knew that he really would do just about whatever she asked but he knew her well enough to know that she would never try and take advantage of that, she wasn’t that kind of person. Henrik hadn’t planned on revealing to Olivia that that was his first kiss any more than he had planned on kissing her but when she had asked he had known that he just couldn’t lie to her. He knew how truly inexperienced he was compared to Olivia and to George but Olivia knew more about him than most other people and he knew that if there was anyone who would understand then it was her. “No, there wasn’t,” he admitted. “I was at the age where I was just starting to notice girls when I died and after Crowley brought me back I was too busy trying to do everything he asked to let anyone get close to me like that. You’re the one person who managed to get under my skin,” he explained. Back when they first met Olivia had made a lasting impression on him and the more time they spent together the more he had found himself caring about her. He was still embarrassed about it but knowing that Olivia understood made it a little better and even though he knew that she had been giving him the space to back away if it was what he wanted, the truth was that that was the furthest thing from his mind. He had been wanting to kiss her for such a long time and now he knew that it wasn’t one sided he knew that he didn’t want to stop. “It’s the same for me,” he admitted as he followed her over to the sofa. “I never thought that this would ever be an option for me. You took me by surprise but I don’t want to hide how I feel about you any longer. I want to be with you,” he said, hoping that that was what she wanted too. OLIVIA CAMPBELL

Despite three decades having passed since she’d lost George, Olivia had never felt like it was time to move on, so to speak. Others lost the loves of their lives and found others within just a few short years, like her sister Violet, who had lost her first husband in the war. Violet had found a second wonderful man two years after peace had finally arrived. Olivia knew her sister had never forgotten her first husband but Violet had been blessed enough with that second love. George hadn’t been lost on the other side of the world, his last few moments never made clear to any of those who had loved him, he’d died right in her arms and that was an image that she was sure would never fade in her mind. That grief had dug its claws deep into her stomach, gripping harder every time she’d taken a step to move on with her life. Liv knew that George never would have wanted her to spend centuries denying herself anything that might make her happy but the thought of living a full life without him had been agonizing. Little by little those claws had started to lessen, the grief still there, but growing more manageable. Moving to Mystic Falls she’d known that this was what George would have wanted for her. A part of the world to feel safe in, people she knew and could trust around her, her heart perhaps adjusting to make space for a decent man, one who had proven that he would do anything to protect her. The bracelet on her wrist hadn’t instigated the feelings that had started to bubble in the pit of her stomach for Henrik but it was the first time she’d realized that maybe it wasn’t just friendship on Henrik’s part. Finding the arrow head for him might’ve deserved some sort of gratitude but that had been beyond just a simple thank you. He’d been beyond just a friend.
No matter how hard she tried to treat him like Remi, or the other bartenders she’d employed since she’d arrived here Olivia knew that Henrik wouldn’t just be an employee either. She shook her head, rolling her eyes at the thought of him being almost puppy like, ready to roll over and let her stroke his belly whenever she wanted to. ”Now you’re making it all the more tempting,” she warned him wickedly. Lucky for Henrik that wasn’t her. She’d never been the sort of person to take advantage of another, even if it was obvious that they almost wanted her to. She’d held back from opening her mouth about her feelings for months. The words had been there in her mind but finding some way to admit them was just as hard now as it had been when she’d found herself falling for George. Both times it had taken the men she’d fallen for to crack her shell and release those words. George might’ve been more experienced with that than Henrik but the effect had been the same. Both she and Henrik were going to have to fumble their way through this together. The blind leading the blind. Her mouth curved softly at the corner. ”You managed to get under mine too,” she admitted. ”It might not have been my first but that was my first in a very long time.” Since George. She’d half expected that first kiss to tear open some deep well of grief within her but she was still on her feet, tracing her own lips over his face to remove the embarrassment, then sinking into that second kiss. Drawing Henrik back towards the couch with her, Olivia felt more at peace with this than she ever could’ve imagined. ”I guess it was time for both of us to have something good on the horizon. Life’s too short not to reach for it…” Sinking down on the sofa, Olivia reached for his hand, lacing their fingers to draw him down with her. Her throat was aching at his words but not with the choking tightness of her grief. ”Don’t hide any of it from me anymore,” she whispered as she wrapped her arms tight around him. ”I want to be with you too.” A weight lifted off her shoulders as she rested her head against his shoulder for a moment, some part of her had freed itself from the cage it had been in for decades.

For the first few years after he was brought back it had been easier for Henrik to throw himself into his magical studies and learning more about the world that he had been brought back into than it was to dwell on the fact that everyone he had ever known would have died a thousand years before. Crowley had never given him any indication that his siblings were still alive after all but then again Henrik knew that it hadn’t been in the demon’s best interests to do so. Crowley had brought him back for just one reason and that was to do his bidding and Henrik had let himself be used like that for too long. During the time they had known each other Crowley had become family to him, a father figure of sorts no matter how strange that might sound, but he had always had his own agenda and Henrik had let himself be blind to that for a long time. Of course at only thirteen years old when he was brought back he had still rebelled but he had kept those indiscretions to himself. Sneaking out when he wanted to explore the world a little more had been easy but he had always made sure to return before he got caught. Now for the first time in years he was living his life the way that he wanted to and if he was honest he was happy. Not only did he have his siblings around him but for the first time in a long time he had friends and he had Olivia as well so he was glad that Crowley had sent him to Mystic Falls. Had he not reconnected with Elijah pretty quickly after arriving in the town then none of this would have happened and Henrik would have still been on his own aside from the demonic company that Crowley had often insisted on for him. Henrik was finally free to live his life and that was something that he knew better than to take for granted given just how easily it had been taken away from him the first time around. Building a life for himself surrounded by people he cared about had never seemed like it would be on the cards for him but that was exactly what he had been doing ever since he first arrived in Mystic Falls. He was still trying to make up for everything that had happened after he died and he was doing his best to help as many people as he could but he also knew how important it was not to waste the second chance that he had been given so he was trying to find a balance. Lately most of his free time had been spent at the bar so that he would have an excuse to spend more time with Olivia but if he was honest he had never actually expected her to offer him a job and he had only been half serious when he had asked if she’d had any jobs going. He didn’t know how he was going to get on when he did start working for her but he knew that he would do his best and he was certain that if there was anyone who would be patient with him then it was Olivia. She knew more about him than anyone outside his family and if she was willing to give him a shot even knowing all of that then he knew that it would be just fine. “You say that like it’s a bad thing,” Henrik chuckled. He knew that Olivia wasn’t really that kind of person but it was still fun to tease her about it nonetheless. It was easier to do that than it was to think too much about the way that he felt about her but it wasn’t long before those feelings came bubbling to the surface once more. The kiss wasn’t planned but it was something that Henrik had wanted to do for such a long time and it had at least started the conversation about what was going on between them so he knew that he was never going to regret it. “Really?” he asked, unable to deny that he was surprised. He knew that Olivia had found it hard after losing George but he had thought that there would have been at least one person since then but now he wasn’t so sure. Sitting down next to Olivia, Henrik gave her hand a gentle squeeze as she spoke once more. “You’re telling me,” he chuckled as she said that life was too short. He had learned that the hard way and it was a mistake he knew better than to make again. “I didn’t plan on any of this happening but I’m glad it did. I wasn’t even sure what this was at first, for a long time I thought it was just a crush that would fade over time but it turns out I couldn’t have been more wrong,” he admitted. Keeping it to himself was one of the hardest things he’d ever had to do so he was glad that things were out in the open now. The worst thing had been not knowing whether or not Olivia felt the same but now he finally knew the answer to that question. “I won’t, I promise,” he assured her as he wrapped his arms around her in return and held her to him. He knew that not all friends could make the transition into something more, or at least that was what he had been told anyway, but he knew that he would regret it for the rest of his life if they didn’t try so he knew that he didn’t want to go back to the way that things used to be. As Olivia said that she wanted to be with him too, Henrik let his head rest against hers for a moment. “Are you sure? I know how hard it was for you to lose George so I can wait if you’re not ready.”OLIVIA CAMPBELL

A near eternal life would’ve seemed like a blessing for some but until you were living it, you couldn’t truly feel the weight of all those years and all the grief that had come with them. George had warned her of them before they had married, telling her on one of those long nights they spent training close to where she’d been working on the guns that turning off ageing wasn’t as easy as it looked. She hadn’t known then just how in love with him she had fallen, or that she would get to spend thirty incredible years with him and so Olivia had found almost blowing off the warning easy. Surely all of those extra years would allow you explore further, to see more, to love forever. The negatives hadn’t started to pile up until she’d lost her mum, then slowly, one by one her siblings, then George. When she’d run out of their village with the hunters possibly on her trail still, the grief had been enough to break her. All she’d been able to see then was a thousand possible years of feeling as though her heart had been torn out of her chest. Olivia was so certain it would be a life on the run, the hunters constantly pursuing and if she was really unlucky, they would never find her. A part of her had wanted to stop, to let them catch her and put her out of her misery but there was no guarantee that an afterlife, if there was one, would be any better. Even if she got to go up, not down, she might not get to spend that eternity with George. Another part of her had known that even if she could’ve done, George wouldn’t have wanted that for her anyway. He’d have wanted her to live, to continue to try and make the world a better place, the way she’d been doing when she’d first met him. Running a bar wasn’t necessarily doing that in most people’s eyes but for her it was giving people a safe haven.
Olivia was glad she’d been able to do that for Henrik, to give him a taste of a life he hadn’t been able to enjoy that way while he’d been in Crowley’s tight grip. The King of Hell had brought him back but it hadn’t been without a cost. Now Henrik was finding a new life for himself in Mystic Falls with his siblings and she was glad she’d been a part of that, glad to have been able to offer a Henrik a job and take him another step towards that life he’d once missed out on. Her face lighting up at Henrik’s chuckled words, Olivia laughed. ”It honestly could be,” she warned, but it wouldn’t be. This was going to work, the two of them already clicking in a way that would guarantee it. Minutes later it seemed like those clicks were all they had been waiting for in end. Like the tumblers in a lock, it had happened one after another, until something had sprung open inside of her with that kiss. Swallowing hard at Henrik’s question, Olivia nodded. ”Really,” she promised. ”Out at those ruins, when you scraped the crap out of me, something began to flutter so hard in my chest I thought it was going to take flight.” Arriving back at the apartment that night she hadn’t been able to take her eyes off of the bracelet on her wrist. Caught up around Henrik as she wrapped herself around him, Olivia drew in a deep breath. ”I didn’t think I deserved it after what happened with George,” she admitted. ”I thought it would be betraying his memory somehow, but when I saw you here again, I knew I was wrong. He wouldn’t have wanted me to spend my life alone, pining for him.” Lifting her head, Olivia wrinkled her nose. ”Is it bad that I’m glad you were wrong?” Olivia tucked her head back against his shoulder, smiling against his neck. ”I’m sure,” she promised. ”I’m never going to forget him but it’s been thirty years, it’s enough time to be alone and I know that he would agree about that. He would’ve liked you, would’ve known you’re a good man.” Both of the men she had fallen for had been, each of them willing to do whatever was necessary to protect those that they loved.

Even though Henrik had barely entered his teenage years when he died and he had spent eight years of his life after being brought back he had already been through so much. There were still times even now when he found himself wondering just how his life had ended up being like this but at the end of the day he was a Mikaelson so a normal life had never really been on the cards for him. When he was younger he had seen two of his older brothers fall in love with the same girl and he had honestly thought that he would follow in their footsteps one day by falling in love and starting a family of his own. It had always been that way for the men in their village, so many went off to fight and those who returned often settled down eventually but life it seemed had had a different plan in mind for his family and Henrik knew that it was all his fault. If he hadn’t talked Niklaus into going to see the men turn into wolves then he wouldn’t have died and his family would have had the chance to live those normal, albeit perhaps somewhat boring, lives. He knew that there was every chance that something else might have happened to set the same wheels into motion that his death had caused but it wasn’t easy knowing that as things had worked out the blame lay squarely on his shoulders. His mother was powerful witch, one who had already lost her eldest daughter quite some time before he was even born but there had always been something missing from their family. He knew now that perhaps it was that loss that had caused Mikael to be the way that he had been while they were all growing up but there was no excuse for the way that he had treated any of them. The fear of losing a third child was what had caused his mother to turn his siblings into the world’s first vampires and the death and destruction that had followed was something that Henrik knew that could have been avoided if only he had chosen differently all those years ago. That wasn’t something that he could take back but it was something that he knew that he had to at least try and make up for. Henrik had never thought that love would be on the cards for him, ever since learning what had happened to his siblings he had been determined to spend his life trying to atone for all of the hurt his childish decision had caused but Olivia had managed to take him by surprise completely. She had helped him realise that it was ok for him to have a life of his own outside of his family and magic and she had helped him see things in a different light. He still felt the need to make things right but it was no longer the overwhelming need that it had once been. He knew that he was lucky to have been given another chance to live the life that had been taken from him a thousand years before and he knew that he didn’t want to waste that chance. “I doubt that somehow,” Henrik said, an easy smile working its way across his face as he looked over at Olivia. He trusted Olivia enough to know that she would never truly take advantage but the thought alone was still amusing to say the least. “It did the same with me,” Henrik admitted, taking Olivia’s hand in his and giving it a gentle squeeze. “I didn’t think I deserved this either, in fact I’m still not sure I do,” he began, taking a breath before continuing. “My one decision all that time ago has caused so much death and destruction not just among my family but to the rest of the world so it seems wrong that I might get the chance to be happy in the wake of all of that but I am happy when I’m with you,” he continued, hoping that Olivia would understand where he was coming from. His siblings had done so much to those around him and they had taken so many lives but he still felt like that was all on him. It sounded crazy even in his own mind but he couldn’t help the way he felt. “It isn’t bad, I’m glad I was wrong too,” Henrik admitted, his smile returning as he looked over at her. “You do deserve to be happy, you have honoured George’s memory and I know that if I can make you even half as happy as he did then I’ll be doing something right,” he said, hooking a finger under Olivia’s chin and lifting it before pressing his lips against hers once more. Olivia wouldn’t have said she was a stranger to grief before she’d lost George, by then one her sisters had lost a husband and her mum was already gone, but Johnny had died thousands of miles away and in a way it had been her sister she had grieved for the most as she’d watched her fall apart, and her mum had gone relatively peacefully, taken by a stroke in the end. Her family had been around her during the first period of mourning, all of them rallying around, George had been there for the second, holding her as she’d cried out all that pain. With George it had been so different. He’d been taken so brutally, so swiftly. She hadn’t had time to adjust, to see him buried and his life celebrated by those who had cared for him, who had called him friend. There’d been that headlong rush from town, her eyes streaming with tears for what had seemed like days while the unrelenting pain in her chest had gripped her heart like a vice. Her trust in strangers had been obliterated, every face she didn’t recognize suddenly carrying some sort of malevolence. It had taken her years to slowly begin to believe that not everybody was a threat again and Olivia had hated every moment of it. She’d always tried to live up to her mother’s legacy, to see the good in everyone and try to do her best by them all. Up until the night she’d lost George that had all been so easy, even during the war when she knew that the work she was doing would likely result in airplanes containing German crew being shot out of the sky. It had been deal with the loss of two Germans who had likely not gone into the fight out of choice or deal with the loss of thousands on the ground when the bombs they were carrying destroyed the world. By the time she’d run into Henrik and found first that trust and then a friendship forming, she’d liked to think that the old her was back, that perhaps she was returning to who she had been. Now, as that friendship seemed to be growing, changing, into something else, it was becoming obvious to her that even then there had still been some healing to do and maybe by coming to Mystic Falls, by finding her friends again, she had finally done that.
She had a home here, friends, she had Henrik and she had a job that she loved. Given the amount of time that Henrik already spent at the bar it was a pretty natural progression to just have him stepping behind it but she hadn’t known that he’d wanted to until tonight. Olivia was glad she could help him build a life here the way she had, the sort of life that might not’ve been exactly like his human one might’ve been but perhaps close enough. She shot him an enigmatic smile that turned just a little devilish around the corners. ”Just you wait and see,” she warned. If only she’d known just how prophetic that was. The offer of a nightcap had become something so much more, busting open the dam that she was fairly sure had only been held together by fear in the first place. With her hand in Henrik’s it felt easy to explain how it had been to realise things were changing. ”I guess the butterflies knew before we did,” she managed softy. Her brows drew together as he began to explain how he didn’t deserve it either. Olivia shook her head. ”That wasn’t your fault. You were an inquisitive kid who had no idea what was going to happen. Would you have said that one of your siblings was right to blame themselves this way if they had been the one it had happened to?” Her expression softened as he said he was happy with her, drawing her mouth slowly into a curve. ”I’m happy when I’m with you too. This is something we both deserve. You’ve already paid a big enough price for what happened that night and although I’ll always love and miss George, I’ve been alone long enough.” He was doing it all right Olivia thought as Henrik lifted her chin and touched his mouth to hers. Shifting on the couch, Olivia draped her legs over Henrik’s, slipping her arms around his shoulders as she lay back against the couch, drawing him with her.

Most of Henrik’s time since he had been brought back had been spent surrounded by Crowley and his demons and he had honestly thought that it would stay that way. He had wanted to break away from Crowley so that he could start living his life properly but at the end of the day he still felt like he was in Crowley’s debt. The demon was the one that had arranged for him to be brought back to life and he had made sure that he’d had everything that he needed to learn as much about magic as he could. Some of the missions that he had been sent on had been a little questionable but Henrik had always been determined to do things the right way. No matter what he had always held on to who he was and it was for that reason that he liked to think that he and Olivia had connected in the first place. She had helped him do the right thing while he was working a job for Crowley and the two of them had only grown closer since then. He hadn’t thought that he would end up seeing her again after they parted ways but one thing Henrik had learned was that people had a habit of finding each other in Mystic Falls. Not only had he found Olivia but he had found his siblings as well and learning that they were still alive had given him the courage that he’d needed to finally break free from Crowley. He still helped the demon from time to time but for the first time since he’d been brought back his life was his own to live and that was something that Henrik wanted to make the most of. He hadn’t necessarily thought that he would end up asking Olivia if she had any jobs going at the bar but he was genuine about wanting to help out. He spent a lot of time there anyway and he and Olivia had been getting closer so he knew that if there was anything that he could do in order to help her then he would. He wasn’t sure how the two of them working together was going to go but he knew that he wanted to give it a try. Even though he had plenty of people around town that he cared about and he had his magic to keep him busy he still needed something more out of life and he hoped that by working at the bar then it would give him the chance to have a somewhat normal life. Getting a job wasn’t the only turn that he hadn’t seen coming that evening, he also hadn’t expected things with Olivia to change the way they had. He would be the first to admit that he knew nothing about relationships given that he had never been in one before and Olivia had already gone through the pain of losing one person she loved but he still couldn’t stop himself from hoping that they might be able to figure things out. “It seems like it,” he nodded as she said that the butterflies knew before they did. Deep down he had known that what he felt for Olivia was more than friendship but the truth was that he had never thought that it would be reciprocated. “No I wouldn’t but that doesn’t make knowing what they have been through any easier to deal with,” he admitted. His siblings had literally had their lives turned upside down and Elijah had also had the woman he loved ripped away from him and that wasn’t something that Henrik could forget easily. “I’m glad you think so because I want this,” he said, not offering any resistance as Olivia laid back and drew him down with her before running his hand down her arm and letting his lips meet hers. “I want to be with you.”OLIVIA CAMPBELL

There had been butterflies in her stomach when she’d first set eyes on George but it hadn’t been for the reason they were in her stomach now. It was all too easy remembering the dread that had filled her when she’d emerged from the living room door to see the faint light from the street lamps illuminating the uniform at the front door. It hadn’t occurred to her then that it was an air force uniform and that both of her brothers were in the army, all she’d seen was the uniform. Olivia could still remember the way relief had filled her when the man standing there had caught sight of her and had mentioned her name instead. Immediately her sisters had been giggling behind her, the sound of them obvious behind her. The faint trace of a smile on George’s face made it obvious that he’d heard them but he hadn’t given it away. Instead Olivia had led him nervously back to the kitchen and having kicked her family out of the room, she found her life changed. It had seemed like the normal sort of courting on the surface but the fact that her and George had bonded while he’d been teaching her to move with a blade as if it were an extension of her own arm and encouraging her to tear up the ground up their feet meant it was anything but normal. Things had shifted between them slowly though, eventually catching up to the tale she’d been telling her mother and siblings. There wasn’t one of them alive now for her to tell about Henrik but Olivia smiled at the thought of how her mother would’ve reacted. She’d have been glad that her youngest daughter had found happiness again now, even if it was with someone who’d once been a guest of the King of Hell. That didn’t matter to her though, nor did the fact that technically Henrik had been born over a thousand years ago or that he was a warlock.
They were all just aspects of the man she had found herself falling for over the last few months. Friendship had slowly made room for what was building between them. It was still there as an undercurrent to the admissions that had fallen from their lips once she’d drawn Henrik up to her apartment. Friendship meant that they could be honest with one another and Olivia had always tried to be that way with Henrik from the start. She’d genuinely been glad that he’d asked about the job, and she was genuinely glad that they hadn’t left this to bubble away in the pits of their stomachs, festering until it had somehow torn its way free. If the two of them had learned anything in their lives it was that you couldn’t set what could make you happy aside like that. You never knew when the end would come and it wasn’t worth putting things off because you weren’t always guaranteed another day. Brown eyes dropped down to their joined hands, the corners of her mouth kicking up faintly. ”Wise butterflies,” she said softly. She wondered faintly if there were butterflies in Henrik’s stomach as his brother had led him to see the men turn into wolves that night. They tended to take flight with fear as rapidly as they did with affection or joy. ”It doesn’t but we can’t change the past. Things happened and they changed their and world and yours. This is a fresh start for you all though, a chance for you to be together again.” Elijah had Tatia again and although it had almost cost some their lives it seemed that Niklaus finally had what he desired too. Stretching out on the sofa, Olivia had drawn Henrik down with her. She let her leg settle over his, anchoring him in place as his lips found hers. For a moment she lost herself in the kiss, her fingers trailed through the short hair at the nape of his neck, her smile growing as her eyes opened again and she tipped her head back. ”I want to be with you too. Will you stay the night?” Her voice grew hoarse as she spoke the words with the sort of boldness that had been held back for years.

Henrik wasn’t used to things going his way but with Olivia they finally seemed to be doing just that. After they parted ways a few years ago he hadn’t thought that he would end up getting to see her again but arriving in Mystic Falls had resulted in him not just being reunited with his family but with Olivia as well and that was something that he really hadn’t expected. He liked her, more than he was prepared to even admit at the moment, but for a long time he had felt certain that it was one sided until now. The two of them were friends and had been for a while but now it seemed that perhaps they could be so much more than that. He knew that things were complicated, after all he was completely new to this while Olivia had been in love before only to end up losing her husband tragically, so there was definitely something to be said for taking it slow but at the same time Henrik knew just how easy it was for a life to be taken. He had seen far too much of that over the years and he had managed to bring a few people back from the dead himself but he knew better than to take something like that lightly. He might not know what he was doing when it came to this kind of thing but he knew how he felt about Olivia and if he was honest it was a relief to finally be able to be honest with her. She wasn’t just a friend to him any longer, she hadn’t been for a while, and he knew that he wanted to see where this was going to go. “Very wise,” he agreed. Even before he had been ready to acknowledge that there was something going on between them he had known deep down that there was and it seemed that he wasn’t the only one after all. He hadn’t thought that anything would ever happen, after all he had never known the pain of losing someone in the way that Olivia did and he knew that it wouldn’t be easy for her to move on but she felt ready and it was something that they both wanted so he knew that they would just take it one step at a time while they figured everything else out together. “You’re right, it is,” he nodded as she said that it was a chance for his family to be together again. “I can’t go back and change what happened to my siblings or anyone else but I can try and make things better for those around me,” he shrugged. Deep down he hoped that he might be able to earn a little redemption in the process but whether or not that was going to be possible remained to be seen. One thing was for sure, he was determined to bring his family back together whether Nik liked it or not. Right now, however, his sole focus was Olivia and he knew that that was just as it should be. With one hand resting on Olivia’s hip, Henrik brought his other hand up and let it rest against her cheek as her fingers ran through the hair at the nape of his neck. “I will if you’re sure you want me to,” he nodded. On the night that George had come to her mother’s front door with his almost insane tale of Japanese fox spirits pieces had started to fall in place like the tumblers of a safe inside her. Each quiet click had echoed in her mind as she’d stared at his mouth, barely daring to believe the words falling from his lips. The family history she hadn’t known revealed at least in part, those clicks continuing until the two of them had finally come together in a way that wasn’t mentor-mentee. With George’s death the once upon door to that safe had slammed shut inside of her. Until Henrik. In a way Olivia supposed he had been the lynch pin around which she’d started her life again. Hearing about the second chance he’d been given had pushed her to make the most of the one she had to. Not realizing then the first quiet click had sounded in her ears again. The choice to finally move to Mystic Falls another, the bar, click, an apartment she’d signed her name to for more than a temporary stay, click. Henrik finally admitting the way he’d felt tonight that quiet thud had happened in her chest, the lock falling open, revealing a dusty space half filled with memory, practically howling out for something to fill it for the first time in decades. Olivia knew that the howl had been sounding for longer than she’d allowed herself to hear it but now it was ringing in her ears with each word from Henrik’s lips now.
Dark eyes travelling from their joined hands to those lips, Olivia found her smile growing. There was a lot to be said for fate putting them together in the first place, and perhaps the King of Hell, who’d sent Henrik on the mission where their paths had crossed, but it was the butterflies she’d paid far more attention to eventually. ”We’ll have to make sure we keep a close eye on them,” she teased. It was those inner feelings you had to listen to when everything around you was being tossed on its head but even they couldn’t always be trusted. Henrik’s were still blaming himself for what had happened when he had been killed by the wolves. Olivia settled her hand at his cheek, her thumb stroking gently over it as she listened to him. ”That’s all we can do,” she said softly. ”Make the most of what we have now and I know that for them, just having you back is going to make their world a better place.” That most definitely included her. Tangled with Henrik on the sofa of her apartment it felt like her life was on steady footing for the first time in a long time, everything drifting gently along instead of being tossed around in a tarrying, raging current. Nodding, Olivia turned her cheek into his hand, skimming her lips over his palm. ”I’m sure,” she said honestly. ”I’d breakfast in bed is the perfect way to start off your first day of work here, don’t you think?” Mischief shone in her hazel eyes as she trailed the hand at his neck to the curve of his ear.

There were certain things that had happened in his life that Henrik wasn’t proud of, in fact he still blamed himself for what had happened to his siblings after he died despite Olivia’s assurances that it wasn’t his fault. So much had happened since then and he couldn’t help but feel like all of that was on his shoulders but that was something that he knew he was going to have to let go of in time. He was doing his best to make up for everything that had happened since and while he knew that he might never be able to even make a dent in all of those things he was doing his best to make Mystic Falls a better place and he knew that that had to count for something. It would be easy for him to let the need to make up for all of that stop him from living his life to the full but having already died once he knew better than to want to do that again. He had no idea what the future was going to hold but he knew that he would regret it if he didn’t take his chance to be happy and he knew that he didn’t want to pass that up. He had liked Olivia from the first time they met and those feelings had only intensified since they’d reunited in Mystic Falls. Being with her made him happy and even though it was a little scary considering that he had never felt this way about anyone before he knew that he needed to just go with it. “Definitely,” Henrik agreed. He had done his best to ignore those butterflies for a long time but now he no longer had to do that and for that he was grateful. This was all new to him but he was finally starting to see why his siblings had fought so hard for love before he’d died. He wasn’t sure whether that was what this was just yet but he knew that he felt strongly about Olivia and it was a relief to know that it wasn’t a one sided thing like he had thought it would be after all. He knew that Olivia had the advantage when it came to all of this, after all she had been married before, but he was looking forward to figuring out whatever this was together. Leaning into her touch as Olivia’s hand rested against his cheek, Henrik felt a smile work its way across his face. “I hope you’re right. I know that having you and all of the other people I care about in my life has definitely made it a lot better,” he admitted. For a long time he’d only had Crowley in his life so he had been rather lonely to say the least but now he had plenty of people around him that he cared about and he knew that they made him a lot stronger than he ever was on his own. As Olivia spoke again Henrik felt his cheeks turn red but he found himself nodding nonetheless, a pleasant shiver running down his spine as she moved her hand to the curve of his ear. “I think you’re right,” he said, a smile touching his lips as he leaned forward and kissed her gently. “I’ve never done anything like this before,” he added. Whether she meant just sleeping over or something more happening it was still all new to him and he was nervous to say the least but he also felt like he was ready. OLIVIA CAMPBELL

She’d always had the guts to walk the line on her own, to do what she needed to in order to keep people safe but doing that alone had never sat well for Olivia. Her earliest memories were of family, of being surrounded by those she knew she could lean on no matter what. They hadn’t been her family, not when she’d arrived on their doorstep but they had made her a part of it. Just as George had opened his world up to her. Stepping out of that, away from both of them, had left her with her knees shaking worse than they had on the night she’d discovered that she had an incredible power in her body. For thirty years after George’s death she’d remained out there on her own, holding her chin up, trying to live up to what her husband had taught her but it had never felt truly right. That had changed when she’d run into Henrik, for just a short time then he’d been someone she could lean on. It had given her a taste of what she’d been missing and that taste had been enough to leave her yearning for something more again in more way than one. Olivia knew she could be brave again now, she had been in the past, not letting what other people told her she couldn’t or shouldn’t do hold her back. Grief could’ve kept her trapped in that vicious circle forever, cowardice holding her back, but neither George or her family would’ve wanted that. In fact, her sister Alice would’ve grabbed her by the hand and shoved her right into this, whispering in her ear for her to be happy.
And she was, despite the butterflies that had all fluttered into life in her stomach as admissions had been wrenched from both of them. Guts. They both had them and no matter what was to come now in this place they’d started to make their lives, they could take it on together, relying on that inner strength. There were still so many unknowns out there, possibly more tragedies but they wouldn’t allow each other to cower from them. That fear seemed a long way away now that she had Henrik so close. Olivia’s own smile remained etched on her lips as she traced her thumb down to his lower lip, the tip of it following the curve of his mouth. ”You’ve made ours a lot better having you here. Your family … it’s a miracle for them.” For her too, although in a very different way. She’d only made do without Henrik for a short time, for Elijah and the others it had been a thousand years. That alone should’ve had her sending him home to his brother tonight but just as Alice would’ve encouraged her, she imagined that Elijah would have encouraged Henrik too. Her heart fluttered in her chest as Henrik’s cheeks burned bright, a giggle trying to escape as she continued to trace the lines of him, his lip, his neck, his ear. ”I’m always right, aren’t I?” she asked, grinning against his mouth. Olivia pressed her lips together, trapping the taste of him as she drew back. ”Do you trust me?” She knew the answer to that of course but she asked all the same as she eased her way out from under him, offering her hand as she got to her feet. ”I’m not going to steer you wrong. All at our own pace, together. Come on.” Her fingers in his Olivia began to lead him back towards her bedroom.

It was incredible just how much one kiss could change everything. After running into Olivia again that day in the woods, Henrik had wanted to spend as much time with her as he could. She was a face from his past, a friend, and even though it had only been a few years ago that they had met in a way it felt like he had known her so much longer than that. When they met Olivia had still been grieving the loss of her husband and he knew that that would perhaps never leave her completely but over time they had grown closer and something more had started to develop between them. Henrik hadn’t known if he was truly ready to admit that at the time but as Olivia had led him up to her apartment after he’d helped close the bar he hadn’t been able to resist the urge to kiss her. It wasn’t something that he was used to feeling, after all he was only thirteen when he’d died and he’d never kissed a girl before tonight but he had felt drawn to her the moment they met and that feeling had only intensified during the time that they had been in Mystic Falls. Things had been complicated when they’d met, he had still been doing everything that Crowley had asked of him with no thought about what would make him happy but now that had changed. Now he was free to live his life the way he wanted to and that included being able to follow his heart and as it turned out he wasn’t the only one who had been feeling something between them and for that he was grateful. “It is for me as well. After Crowley brought me back and told me how long it had been since I’d died I thought that they had all died a long time ago and he never corrected me,” Henrik explained. He knew why now, Crowley had kept the truth hidden so that he would do what he wanted rather than seeking out his family but the truth had come out in the end just as it had with Olivia and he knew that he never wanted things to go back to the way they were. With Crowley he’d had a small sense of family, a surrogate father in a way even though he never would have admitted as much, but now he had so many more people around him that cared about him and that he cared about in return and now that he’d been able to experience that for a while he knew that he wouldn’t want it any other way. He knew that he should probably stop this right now, that he should probably turn around and head back to the apartment that he and Elijah shared but he couldn’t bring himself to walk away from Olivia, not now. He would be lying if he said that he wasn’t more than a little embarrassed by his own lack of experience when it came to these things and he was consciously aware of the fact that Olivia didn’t have the same problem considering that she had lived for so much longer than he had and that she had been in love and married before but she was trying to make him feel better about it and he was trying to let her. “You’re only right sometimes,” he said, knowing that it probably wouldn’t be a good idea to concede that she was always right. As she asked if he trusted her, he nodded. “Completely,” he said, watching as she got to her feet and held a hand out to him. Taking it, Henrik got to his feet and felt a smile work its way across his face as she spoke again and he followed her towards the bedroom. OLIVIA CAMPBELL

War had shackled a lot of people. For young women in meant stepping up in a way they had never imagined, working in roles that had terrified most of them, leaving some at home with their children, living in constant fear that hell would literally rain down from the sky and kill them all. For the men it had been worse. The uniform had tied them to a fight they couldn’t escape from without finding victory. At the start of all of that Olivia had thought that marriage would eventually be the shackle for her but when it had come there was no sense of being trapped. Just the opposite. Things with George had been incredible until hell had struck like a thunderbolt. That was when the shackle had snapped around her, stealing her breath, holding her back from the life she had known and from moving on. Slowly the iron band around her had begun to slip but it had been Henrik who’d had that lock finally springing open entirely. The weight disappeared, leaving her feeling as though Mystic Falls was some sort of paradise she’d finally earned back. Olivia knew that the idea was ridiculous, this wasn’t about karma finally gifting her with something but what had slowly grown with Henrik did feel like a gift for both of them. He’d been brought back by somebody who had used him for his gift, somebody who’d manipulated him but it wasn’t until he’d eased away from Crowley and found this place had he gotten back what he’d lost. Now they were finding something more, not something lost, something new, something that was theirs.
He could start to move on from the weight of guilt that had settled on him when his brothers and sister had suffered because of his desire to see the men turn into wolves. Could start to move on from what he’d done for Crowley. Henrik had been given an opportunity she would’ve given almost anything for herself, to have her siblings back. Olivia’s brows drew together at the thought of how Crowley had lied to Henrik, albeit being a lie of omission. ”That was cruel of him,” she said softly, touching her lips to his brow. ”You have time with them now though and that’s all that matters. You all have a chance to make this far better.” To stop the violence. She wasn’t going to say that aloud, not when Henrik already felt so much guilt. His parents were the ones to blame for what had happened to their children since but they weren’t here to fix their mistakes. It was up to those children themselves. She’d taken a step forward with Henrik tonight, one that she was sure he still felt faintly doubtful over but being a first for him didn’t concern her the same way. She hadn’t come to him looking for experience, they’d come together because they felt something for one another and that was all that was important. In her own way she was trying to ease his mind about it now, distracting him as his cheeks flamed. Olivia shook her head, her eyes bright on him. ”Always, it’s my special power.” Tonight that was going to be true at least. She slipped out from him as soon as he admitted that he trusted her. Her heart aching faintly in her chest, the warmth growing in the pit of her stomach, she led him across the room. ”We can just sleep tonight,” she told him softly as she shut the bedroom door behind them. Olivia let her arms slip up around his neck as she backed them towards the bed, drawing his head down to hers. ”Where do you want to stop?” Her words were whisper soft, her lips finding his again.

Henrik had spent so long believing his siblings to be dead but now he knew they were alive he wanted nothing more than to bring his family back together. One thing his death had taught him was that he couldn’t afford to take the people that he cared about for granted. That included his siblings and it also included Olivia. The two of them had been friends for the last few years but somewhere along the way it had turned into something more than that. If he was honest he’d developed a crush on her the first time they met but back then he hadn’t felt ready to do anything about it. Dying at thirteen in a completely different time had meant that he was so far behind others who were the same age that he was physically now but he knew better than to let that stop him. Kissing Olivia had been impulsive and it could have easily backfired if it had turned out that she didn’t feel the same way but it was something that he’d felt like he’d had to do. He could have continued convincing himself that she was just a friend but at the end of the day it had turned into more than that and he couldn’t deny that it was a relief to finally be able to acknowledge that. Their kiss that evening had been his first but there had been a few more since then and he couldn’t deny that he liked the turn that things had taken. He wasn’t sure what was going to happen between them next but he was still looking forward to finding out. “I know but in a way it was probably for the best. If I’d known about them straight away then I wouldn’t have stayed with Crowley and I wouldn’t have met you, not to mention my siblings would have been stuck feeling like they needed to look after me,” Henrik shrugged. He never wanted to be a burden on his siblings so even though his life since he was brought back hadn’t exactly been conventional a part of him couldn’t help but think that perhaps things had worked out the way they were supposed to. “That’s the way I’m looking at it,” he nodded as Olivia said that he had a chance to make this better. That was what he wanted more than anything and he knew that he would stop at nothing to make it happen. His siblings had been through so much since he’d died and even though he knew that they had taken a lot of lives over the centuries he also knew that deep down they were still the siblings he had grown up with. They had angered, hurt and betrayed each other but underneath it all they were still family and that was something that none of them could ever give up on. It was going to take time and it certainly wasn’t going to be easy but sooner or later he was determined to bring his family back together once more. He knew better than to let that desire completely consume his life, however. He had more than just his family in town, he had friends as well and he also had Olivia. It had taken that one impulsive kiss to get the two of them to open up about what was going on between them but now it finally felt like they were moving forward and that was what he wanted. “Only sometimes,” he corrected even though he had a feeling that Olivia wasn’t going to let him get away with that. Following her across the room, Henrik brought one hand up and let it rest against her cheek as his other hand found her waist and before he could say anything her lips were pressing against his once more so it was only when they finally parted for air that he was able to speak. “I don’t want to stop,” he said, his lips brushing lightly against hers as he spoke. If Olivia wanted to stop, however, he knew that he would understand. “I want this. I want you.”OLIVIA CAMPBELL
