Things were finally starting to look up for Ben, he had found his dad, the vampire that had killed his mother was dead and he had actually managed to stay in one place for more than a few days. Three years ago his life had been turned upside down the day he and his mother were attacked by a vampire and he had been on his own ever since but that wasn’t the case any longer. Now he had family around him, family that he hadn’t even known he’d had, and for the first time in a long time he felt settled. Originally he had moved to Mystic Falls in the hope of tracking down his dad and the vampire that had killed his mother and while it was true that he had enrolled himself at the local high school so he wouldn’t have to worry about raising suspicion the truth was that the plan had never been to stay in Mystic Falls as long as he had. With the size of the supernatural presence in the town there was always plenty to keep him busy but he knew that there were other towns like Beacon Hills and New Orleans where that was true as well. The last few years had been spent travelling the country working different cases but now something had changed. He knew that Sam and Dean were sticking around in Mystic Falls for a while and for the first time in a long time he had friends not to mention a girl he really liked as well. He had stuck around before when he had wanted to see how things were going to end up with Hayden and he knew that he needed to know now. There were no secrets between them now, they had both come clean and they had accepted the other completely, and he knew he wanted them to find a way to make it work if they could. Settling into life in Mystic Falls and going to school like a normal teenager hadn’t been easy at first but he liked to think that he was catching up and he seemed to have found a balance between his school work, spending time with the people he cared about and hunting. Dean was free from the Mark of Cain so that was a huge weight off Ben’s mind and that left him to focus on other things. That day he had managed to catch up with his homework and he had arranged to catch up with Hayden over dinner later but until then he had some time to kill and he knew that it wouldn’t hurt to get some training in while he could. He wasn’t working a case at the moment and the truth was it was nice having a bit of a break but he knew better than to let himself get complacent. He needed to stay at the top of his game and that meant working hard to stay in shape and keep his mind sharp while he was at it. Having decided to go for a run through the woods it was only when he had gone a few miles and needed a break that he stopped for a breather, pulling the collapsible crossbow he kept with him out of his bag and notching an arrow before using a nearby tree as target practice while his muscles began to recover from the run. Was it a miracle that the presence of so many supernatural creatures hadn’t caused war to explode here before? Not in the strictest sense of the word. Was it a miracle now that the Winchesters hadn’t followed the signs back to him and started tearing the town apart in an attempt to kill the thing that killed both their mom and dad? That was closer to the mark. Azazel knew keeping a low profile in Mystic Falls would’ve been a smarter move but with the supernatural literally stinking up the town and not one but two of his special children so close, it was hard to resist the temptation to stroll boldly along the streets, to taunt those who were familiar with his kind, if not the Yellow Eyed demon personally. A shape shifter in what passed for the social hub in this town, a psychic with a talent for something akin to compulsion in the street, both had drawn his attention, both’d had a little taste of who he was, what he was doing lingering in a town like this one. Neither was likely to go opening their mouth to those around them who had a hope in hell of stopping what he was here to do. Once he got his hands on Sam any hope the Winchesters had of ridding themselves of him would be gone anyway. He’d twisted Sam around once, or at least Ruby had in the end, with a little effort it would happen again and his noble big brother would be left all on his own, reeking of desperation, throwing his worthless carcass pointlessly at the big bad who’d finally succeeded in stealing away what remained of his family.
Poor naïve, motherless little Ben. Deprived of his father for years by a sweet sentiment, deprived of his mother thanks to a vampire, one whose carcass was now rotting somewhere not a million miles away from here it seemed. Azazel trailed the boy through the woods, watching him run, watching him train, stretching muscles that were weak in comparison to those he could really build up. Just like his father, naïve enough to think that he could make an ounce of difference with a steak, a bottle of holy water or a musty old newspaper article … just like his uncle, completely unaware of what had really happened just a few short months after his birth. Smiling fondly at the memory of that particular nursery, of the wide blue eyes staring up at him as the blood had rained down on the child’s lips, Azazel strode towards the clearing where the boy had paused for breath. Making sure to make plenty of noise as he approached, the demon let out a low whistle, one supposed to show that he was impressed with the weapon. ”Your pa know you’re out here playing with that thing?” he asked, his voice carrying easily on the still air as he paused to slip his hands into the pockets of his canvas coat. ”Not many’d buy their kid something like that and give them free rein with it.” Not so much in these parts anyway. Knowing Dean Winchester he’d have bought the thing for his kid, encouraged him to sleep with it under his pillow, just in case the paranoia ever proved to be reality.

The presence of the supernatural wasn’t something that was widely known around the world, in fact Ben hadn’t known about it either until he and his mother were attacked by a vampire, but in a town like Mystic Falls there were times when he couldn’t understand just how it had been kept a secret for so long. He knew that Mystic Falls was unique, the Founder’s Council seemed to be dedicated to covering up anything even remotely supernatural related and that really was something that he had never come across before. In the past he had always been left to deal with the fallout when people learned the truth about what was really going on around them but in Mystic Falls he was able to hunt in peace without having to really worry about that and the truth was that it was quite refreshing. Ben had originally found his way to Mystic Falls with the intention of finally killing the vampire that had taken his mother from him and he had hoped that while he was there he would also track down the man called Dean that his mother had told him to find but he had never expected to learn that he had actually already met the Dean he had spent the last three years searching for. His memories of their time together had been wiped but upon learning that Dean was his dad and that they had met before the floodgates had been opened and all of those memories that had been locked away had come rushing back to him. Now he remembered everything and to know that he was no longer all alone in the world really was an incredible feeling after being on his own for so long. Now Ben had finally finished what he had set out to do three years ago and he knew that if he wanted to he could leave the hunting life behind him. Even before finding Dean he had decided to put down roots in Mystic Falls and he had enrolled himself at the local high school so for the first time since his mother died he had something normal to hold on to. He no longer had to hunt but now he knew that it was something that he wanted to do. Being at school was good and he liked to think that he was starting to make some friends but at the end of the day he also liked being able to help people so he knew that he couldn’t walk away completely. He had promised himself that he would make school a priority since he knew that he at least wanted to get some good grades under his belt but that didn’t mean that he had to stop training or working cases and it was with this in mind that Ben had soon found himself out in the woods. After a run a little target practice seemed like a pretty good idea but it soon became apparent that Ben wasn’t alone. He knew that he could have hidden the crossbow or made an excuse but there were ways to dismiss it as well and he knew that was exactly what he had to do. “He trusts me and besides in a town like this with all of the animal attacks going on it doesn’t hurt to be prepared,” he admitted with a shrug. “What brings you out here, are you lost?” Something about the guy felt off but if it was simply a case of him having got turned around while out on a walk Ben knew that it would be easy enough to help him find his way back to town. Never putting all your eggs in one basket was a lesson hell had learned long ago. Developing tunnel vision, trusting that your single spectacular plan would net you the results you were looking for, those were the reasons it had taken so long to spring Lucifer from his cage. You couldn’t just fight on a single front or hope that one lone child would grow strong enough, powerful enough, would grow at all. The first time around he’d visited over a dozen homes, charming or manipulating his way in to draw promises from the mothers. A little visit from the Yellow Eyed Demon after the child was born, that was all he was asking for. Azazel knew not a single one of them would have agreed if they’d known what the visit involved. The only one who’d discovered the truth was Mary Winchester and it hadn’t ended well for her … or, honestly, for all the special children from that first batch who hadn’t made it through his little test to winnow out the weak from the strong. A wave of power, an ounce of will and little Sammy Winchester had watched his own mother burn. Just two decades later Sam got to watch it happen again, poor Jessica suffering the same fate. Watching the boy in the woods, Sam’s own nephew, Azazel wondered whether such methods would be necessary again. He couldn’t use his mother against him, a vampire had seen to that, but there were surely others the son of Dean Winchester had clung onto since she’d been taken from him. Of course, there was Dean himself, a pawn to be played against both brother and son.
Relaxed, smug, confident that his second batch of special children wouldn’t disappoint Azazel had stood, watching the boy train himself for a moment before opening his mouth. It would’ve been a shame to tell him just how ineffective the weapon in his hands would be against the true enemy. Azazel knew it was better to let the boy have his dreams for now, at least until he needed to start twisting him, bending him to his will. Tugging his hands back out of his pockets, Azazel held them up in a sign of surrender, a faint smile playing over his mouth. There was definitely more of Dean Winchester in the boy than the mother had likely hoped for. ”Just make sure you use that thing only on animals, wouldn’t want any accidents out here,” he said with an easy charm. He could’ve let the boy shoot him with it, could’ve played on what could no doubt be an almost bottomless well of guilt inside of him but that hadn’t been his intention to start with. Shaking his head, Azazel let his gaze drift back around the clearing. ”Nope son, not lost,” he said honestly, dragging his gaze back to the boy. ”I know these woods like the back of my hand, know the whole town that way really. Know who’s local too. You’re not are you?” One greying brow rose, the meat suit’s lips forming into that easy smile that’d disarmed more than one foolish human over the years. The boy was here for one reason and one reason only, his father.

Even though Ben had never really known how his life would end up he had never expected this. Growing up it had been just Ben and his mother, or at least so he had thought until recently, and he had honestly thought that it would stay that way. The day the vampire attacked his whole world had been turned upside down and that was something that he had never seen coming. Now she was gone and for the last four years Ben had been on his own travelling around the country working different cases. He had come across different hunters during that time and most of them had tried to teach him at least a few things to help him but for the most part he had been on his own. It wasn’t easy but he had learned a lot and in the end his search for the vampire that had killed his mother and for the man his mother had told him to find had brought him to Mystic Falls. Ben had heard rumours about the town in passing from other hunters but the truth was that he had never completely believed them. The idea of so many supernatural creatures remaining undetected in one town was incredible and he had half expected to find out that it wasn’t true but since arriving in the town he had seen so many different creatures, both those who killed whenever they felt like it and those who wanted nothing more than to live their lives in peace, and he knew that everything he had heard about the town was true. Ben had never tried to be overly careful while he was on hunts in the past, the moment he learned that a creature had killed someone that was enough to make him go after them, but this town was different. He had never come across creatures who wanted to live in peace among humans before but there were more people like that in Mystic Falls than he had anticipated so he knew that he needed to be careful and make sure that he didn’t make any mistakes. Now the vampire he had spent the last few years hunting was dead but more importantly he had finally found his dad. He had asked his mother so many times who the guy was but even when Dean was living with them she had refused to tell him the truth but now he knew. The vampire he had been hunting had rubbed it in his face before Ben killed it and he had seen it confirmed in his mother’s own handwriting in a letter she had left him along with his birth certificate. There could be no denying it, Dean was his dad and even though Ben wasn’t sure whether Dean liked the fact that he was still hunting he was at least supportive and Ben knew that he couldn’t ask for anything more than that. He knew that no matter what he needed to keep up with his training but that day it seemed like someone else had other plans. “You don’t need to worry, I’m always careful with this,” he shrugged. It had been a little strange at first but Ben had always been a pretty good shot when it came to video games so it hadn’t taken him too long to pick it up. He always kept the crossbow with him just in case and he would be lying if he said that he wasn’t getting a weird feeling about the guy in front of him but so far he hadn’t seen anything out of the ordinary so he knew better than to start causing trouble. As she guy spoke again Ben studied him carefully for a moment. “No, I’m not. I moved here a few months ago with my family,” he explained. “I’m Ben. I haven’t seen you around town before, do you live around here?”AZAZEL

Like his uncle before him Ben Winchester held a particular spot in this second crop of special children that was particularly close to his heart. Out of that first group he’d had a soft spot for Sam. He hadn’t won the last little challenge for them in the end but the kid had heart, Azazel would give him that. The Winchesters were fighters, determined beyond all sanity. Any other hunter would’ve given up long ago but John had never let the matter drop, not until he’d been left with the choice between sacrificing himself and his eldest dying. Maybe if John had known then what had been done to his precious Sammy he wouldn’t have caved quite so easily. Azazel wondered whether Dean would do the same, following in his old man’s steps in another way. If he hadn’t needed Ben here on his side he might’ve arranged for a little accident to see. It would mean laying a hand on the boy’s head metaphorically, one that Castiel and his feathered friends wouldn’t be able to swoop in and deal with. It also would’ve meant possibly losing one of the strongest little soldiers in his army. That Azazel couldn’t risk at the moment. Dean was going to half lose his mind when he discovered that Lisa had been desperate enough to do something foolish before Ben had been born as it was. That would be enough satisfaction for now and the knowledge that it would be father versus son, brother versus brother on that battlefield if he had anything to say about it.
First of all he had to get the boy on side and see just what he could do with the demon blood flowing through his hunter veins. The crossbow in his hands told him that there was enough of Dean in Ben to make this a more difficult prospect that cajoling most of his other special children had been. Finally opening his mouth he’d gone with the harmless old codger act again, one that had seen him in good stead dozens of times in the last couple of decades. Blue eyes had gone a little wide as his hands had gone up, the faint smile belying the surrender act. ”Glad to hear it. I come walking out here enough to know how dangerous these woods are. We’ve got enough bodies piling up out here without adding to ‘em.” Hunters would do enough of that anyway only the bodies wouldn’t be quite so human as those left by the things they were hunting. His own would heal from a crossbow wound as long as he still inhabited it, without him this poor old fool would rot and fall apart rapidly. The janitor whose body he’d taken over was long gone now and this flesh rotted and reanimated by the witch since. It had felt a little like a homecoming slipping back in to it and no doubt, once the elder Winchesters caught a glimpse of him it would be a blast from the past for the pair of them too. So far their paths hadn’t crossed, at least not his and Dean’s. Now though it would be hastened he supposed. Nodding almost absentmindedly at the boy’s words Azazel took another slow step in to the clearing. ”I’m John. Nice to meet you Ben. Haven’t always been from around here but I’ve been here more than few months now with the wife. She’d probably throw a fit if she realised my little afternoon stroll had brought me out here. She’s always worrying that I’ll get myself into some sort of trouble. Imagine your family would think the same thing if they knew you were out in these woods.” It’d be worse if they realised that little Ben was talking to the demon who’d single-handedly torn their lives apart again and again.

Ben often spent a lot of time out in the woods while he was training or working cases but the truth was that he wasn’t used to bumping into people while he was out there. When he wanted to be alone and clear his head he would often go for a run or have an impromptu training session like he had done that day but he was so used to spending that time alone that the truth was it was a little strange seeing someone else out there. Naturally he was a little suspicious, it wasn’t very often that people ventured into the woods without some kind of an agenda and he couldn’t shake the feeling that there was something oddly familiar about the man before him. He couldn’t quite put his finger on it but it was almost like he had met the man before although he knew that he would have remembered if he had. There was definitely something strange about him so Ben knew better than to let his guard down. The more time he spent in the man’s presence the more he could feel an uneasy feeling starting to grow in the pit of his stomach but he knew he just had to ignore it and try and get to the bottom of what was really going on. “Why would you come out here if you think it is dangerous?” Ben asked, unable to keep the interest out of his voice as he spoke. Most people would avoid somewhere they knew to be dangerous like the plague but this guy didn’t seem to want to do that. Most people in town seemed happy to believe that there were an unusually high number of animal attacks happening around the town and the truth was that he still didn’t understand why more people weren’t in the know but one thing he had discovered was that when people wanted to believe something no matter how much evidence there was to the contrary it was often difficult to get them to change their minds. In a way it was easier to remain oblivious to what was really out there, learning the truth brought into question pretty much everything a person had ever known and most people weren’t ready for that. Ben had found out the hard way and his whole world had been turned upside down but he had come out of it the other end and he liked to think he was a much stronger person for it so he knew that things had worked out exactly how they were supposed to. “It’s nice to meet you too,” Ben nodded as the stranger introduced himself. “Probably but I can take care of myself,” he admitted with a shrug. “So what do you think of the town so far?” he asked, curious to know exactly how much the guy knew considering that the amount of bodies that kept turning up hadn’t seemed to bother him one bit. Logic wasn’t ever a word the Yellow Eyed Demon would’ve associated with the populace of Mystic Falls. If any of them had possessed an ounce of logic, of wisdom, they wouldn’t have continually ended up as fodder for the things that called this town home. From what he’d been able to tell there had been a Founder’s council from the moment those families had decided to set down roots on earth that had already been scorched with violence. They’d willingly kept the rest of this town blind to the truth, but had then raged when their attempts to keep the supernatural under control failed and people kept turning up in these very woods dead. It was a shame, Azazel thought as he studied Dean Winchester’s progeny, perhaps if they’d handled things a little more violently, instead of pussyfooting around, they’d have less trouble on their hands. That might’ve involved them needing to look a little closer to home for the culprits though. And people didn’t always like having skeletons hauled out of their closets. Lisa Braeden had been one of those people. Had she opened her mouth to tell either her son or his father the truth when Dean Winchester had supposedly gone looking for a normal life while Sammy Boy had been roasting in hell? Nope, it seemed that Dean’s former flame had kept her mouth shut, right up until the moment she was breathing her last breath. She’d kept both father and son in the dark, not knowing what dangers might’ve lain ahead for her boy.
Danger lurked everywhere and as a hunter, Ben should’ve been aware of that. He was certainly in on what was happening out here, at least the official story of it, since he was questioning why this friendly old soul was out in the woods himself. Beneath the canvas jacket Azazel shrugged his shoulders and sighed. ”Let’s just say I’m set in my ways,” he told the boy cryptically. In a way it was the truth, he’d failed with his first set of special children but it didn’t mean he hadn’t tried again. ”I think, like most of it, I think I’m big enough and ugly enough to deal with whatever comes my way.” And again that was the truth. He didn’t have a crossbow in his hands but the former King of Hell didn’t need some fancy toy like that to take care of a vampire or a werewolf. All of his power lay in this unassuming shell, the one that was lulling the boy into a false sense of security. Azazel nodded cordially at the polite words, his mouth only curving once the boy shrugged off the idea that he couldn’t take care of himself out here. Dean likely would’ve said the same thing, that jutting jaw of his held haughty in the air. ”If you’re carrying that thing every time you’re out here I’d say you probably could,” he agreed with a chuckle. Turning slightly, the demon began to take a slow circle around the boy, human blue eyes darting to arrows lodged in the tree the boy had used for target practice. ”It’s a nice little place, quiet, other than the trouble out here of course. Seems like a good place for families. Yours from around here?” he asked, already knowing the answer. ”Seems like a lot of people don’t stay put, other than the families that first broke ground here of course.” Most didn’t go out on their own two foot, or rolled out in their vehicles, they went out in a box, into the ground, or on a pyre in these very woods.

There was a time when Ben had been completely clueless about the existence of the supernatural but his eyes had been opened in perhaps the worst way possible the day that he and his mom were attacked by a vampire. He could have gone back to his normal life after she died but he knew the plan had been for him to be placed into care until he was old enough to live on his own considering there wasn’t anyone else who could look after him and he had been determined not to let that happen. Instead he had chosen to become a hunter so that he could find and kill the vampire that had taken his mom from him and for a long time he had thought that that was his first experience of the supernatural but he now knew that he had been wrong. There had been a few other run ins before that but Dean, in an attempt to protect him, had erased those memories. A part of Ben knew that had he still had those memories then perhaps he would have been more prepared when they were attacked but he understood why Dean had made that decision. His mom had almost died while she was being possessed by a demon and erasing those memories had meant that they could live their lives in peace once more. A quiet life hadn’t been given to them without consequences though, Dean had made sure that they didn’t remember a thing about him and he had left. Now those walls that had been built up to keep those memories at bay were gone and he remembered everything about his time with Dean and he had learned more since then. For such a long time he had found himself wishing that Dean was his dad and it happened to be true so now he knew that he had to live up to the family name and be the best hunter that he could be. That meant having to train more so that he could be ready for anything but that was something that he was more than prepared to do. He hadn’t expected anyone else to be out so deep in the woods but he knew better than to let his guard down with the man before him. There was something strange about him, something that Ben couldn’t quite put his finger on, and even though a part of him wanted nothing more than to get as far away from the man as possible another part of him was curious as to who this man was and just how much he knew about what was going on in Mystic Falls. So many of the residents seemed to be completely clueless about what was going on despite the amount of animal attacks that apparently happened around the town but there were those who knew the truth and it was always good to work out who fell into which category. “I think you would be surprised, I’ve heard that there are some pretty nasty creatures in these woods,” he admitted let the crossbow rest at his side. “Keep your eyes open while you’re out here, best not to be caught off guard,” he added. It was far too easy to get distracted but that was when things often turned dangerous and the last thing he wanted was for there to be another death in the town. “It never hurts to be prepared,” he nodded, a half smile tugging at the corner of his mouth as he looked over at the man. “No, they aren’t. My mom grew up in Indiana and my dad moved all over. This does seem like a nice place to live though,” he agreed. “It sounds like you’ve been here a bit longer than I have, is there anything I should know about the town?”AZAZEL

If Ben Winchester had half a notion of the curse his family seemed to live under then the boy should’ve run a million miles away instead of coming looking for a reunion with his proud papa. It wouldn’t have saved him from his fate of course, Hell had daubed him with the target on his back the moment it had become obvious that Dean Winchester had a soft spot for the tow-headed little boy and his protective mother. Sooner or later someone would’ve tracked him down, dragging him into the war as he was doing now, or using him as a pawn against his father and uncle. Being a Winchester meant being a part of that without question, but it would have at least delayed the inevitable. Undoubtedly Dean would’ve preferred that, keeping his boy out of the mess he’d been mired in since he was a tow-headed little brat himself. There was nothing daddy could do to protect his son though, not when the Yellow Eyed Demon had already turned his bitter little gaze upon the boy. Ben Winchester carried the same blood in his veins that his uncle had and would be a part of the same fight eventually. Azazel knew that it might require a little more honesty to draw Ben in than drawing Sammy in had, the boy knew enough of his family’s past to be able to look past a little strong-arming, but he suspected that was what the boy had come here looking for in the first place. His father, the reason that he’d gone and abandoned his mom in a foolish attempt to keep her safe from what smothered his world in a dark cloud … what had truly happened to his mom when that attempt finally caught up to them all.
Staring at the boy with that passive congeniality on his face on Azazel wondered whether that would’ve allowed him to bypass the small talk now. The carrot of Lisa dangling from the big supernatural stick in his hand. Subtlety had been the name of the game to start with though and unless Ben made a move with that crossbow in his hands Azazel had no intentions on strong arming this for now. One corner of Azazel’s mouth creased into a grin as he shook his head. Human blue eyes swept around the area again, knowing that anything that did attempt to interrupt this little meeting would end up as chum all over the leaves, a lure for whatever would come along afterwards to clean up his mess. ”Not as surprised as you’d think son. I’ve spent my entire life around pretty nasty creatures and I’m still here. Now, I don’t imagine a kid your age would have much experience with them, even if he liked to think himself a sharp shooter with that gizmo.” The demon nodded his head towards the bow resting at the boy’s side. A faint chuckle and he was tugging his hand free of his pocket to wave the words off. ”My eyes are open and trust me, nothing’s going to catch me off guard here boy.” It was likely to be the other way around, him having to snap his fingers and peel those scales from Ben’s eyes. As much as he probably liked to believe himself prepared, Ben wasn’t, he had no clue who he was talking to or how much was already known. ”Indiana’s a nice bit of the country,” Azazel agreed. Moving slowly, the demon began to head for the tree still sporting the arrows the kid had fired. ”Your dad a salesman?” he asked. ”It was what my old man did, striking bargains the world over. It was hell on him but he’d always say it was worth it.” Azazel’s gaze cut to Ben as he began to pluck the arrows from the tree. ”You mean other than all that violence out here? Not much, all I’d say is don’t trust that it’s as sleepy as it seems. People are always more than meets the eye, I guess that’s something your mom might’ve taught you. Don’t take things on first impression Ben.” He’d slipped the name in, growing friendlier with the boy, sowing the ground for dropping his mother more squarely into the conversation. Lisa was the soft spot here, for both father and son.

Since arriving in Mystic Falls, Ben’s life had already changed drastically. For the first time in years he wasn’t just a hunter anymore, he was also a high school student and a son. For far too long he had been looking for answers after his mother died, she had given him a clue as to who his father was and that was something that Ben hadn’t been able to bring himself to let go of. His mom had always refused to tell him who his dad was while he was growing up and eventually he had learned to stop asking questions so that he could avoid being disappointed. That didn’t mean that he hadn’t still had those questions burning inside of him but his mom was the only one who could answer them considering he didn’t have any other family left and she had refused so he had resigned himself to the fact that he would never find out the truth about where he came from. Nothing would have stopped him from loving his mother but he had grown up seeing so many of his friends having the chance to hang out with their dads and he had always felt envious of that but it wasn’t the way his life had turned out and he had made his peace with that. Having just a first name to go on had meant that trying to find his dad was like trying to find a needle in a haystack, it really had seemed like an impossible task and finding the vampire responsible for killing his mother had seemed just as impossible. When he had arrived in Mystic Falls it was only supposed to be temporary while he followed the leads he had found into both his dad and the vampire’s location but he had never thought that he would end up finding his dad and killing the vampire while he was there. Now he had the chance to finally put down some roots and start building a life for himself and considering that Sam and Dean didn’t seem to be in a hurry to leave the town either he finally had the chance to have a slice of normality for once and he wanted to make the most of it while he could. That didn’t mean that he was ready to give up hunting though, he had done a lot of good over the last few years and he had saved a lot of people so he knew that he wasn’t going to walk away from it completely. Now he had school to keep him busy during the day but during the evenings and at the weekends his time was his own and he was free to work on cases as he pleased. That day he had planned on getting in a little more practice with the crossbow but meeting John had derailed that for the time being. He still couldn’t shake the feeling that there was something off about the man, there was something about him that made Ben feel uneasy and that really wasn’t something that he experienced too often, but so far he seemed harmless although Ben knew better than to let his guard down. That was when mistakes could be made and he knew that he wasn’t about to let that happen. “I’ve seen a lot more than you might think,” Ben admitted. He was still young but he had seen a lot more than he should have done over the course of his life so far and he didn’t doubt that there was much more for him still to see and do. He still wasn’t entirely convinced when the man said that nothing was going to catch him off guard but Ben knew that he wasn’t going to let any harm come to the man anyway. “Yeah, he is,” he lied. “He has worked all over the country but this is the first place we’ve stayed for so long,” he explained. “It has been great seeing so much of the country but it is nice to have one place to call home for a while.” He wasn’t sure where his dad would go next when it came time to leave Mystic Falls but for the first time in a long time Ben hoped that he wouldn’t be moving on to somewhere new anytime soon. He had a life, friends and a girlfriend in Mystic Falls and he knew that he didn’t want to give any of that up. “Violence? I thought they were animal attacks?” he asked, instantly on the alert as to exactly just how much the man knew about what was going on in Mystic Falls. As John mentioned his mom, Ben shook his head. That was always a sore subject for him after what had happened so he knew that he wanted to steer the conversation away from her if he could. “Actually my dad taught me that, he has always been a good judge of people.”AZAZEL

Most of the special children had been born of desperation, of a mother or father willing to give up what should’ve been the most precious thing in the world to these sentimental little humans. Given who Ben Winchester’s father was, it had been a whole different ball game for him. Lisa hadn’t been in a crappy situation, hadn’t seen an easy way out by offering up her future offspring for glory now. Her only crime in heaven or hell’s eyes would’ve been sleeping with Dean Winchester. Had she gone on her merry way once the sluttier Winchester had left town she’d have been safe from the supernatural world most likely, from the Yellow Eyed Demon. Lisa hadn’t done that though, that brief ‘relationship’ with Dean had marked her, had marked the son she’d eventually given birth to. He hadn’t needed to seek permission to enter little Ben’s nursery, hadn’t needed to strike any sort of bargain. Yellow Eyes glowing Azazel had stood over the child in his crib and had smiled. If all went badly with his first batch of special children, then he would have a back-up, a new generation – and more importantly he’d have a way of bending the Winchesters’ arms should it become necessary. Things might not have gone the way he’d expected afterwards but his prior planning meant that the Yellow Eyed demon wasn’t fighting this war all on his lonesome. He had his children and he would use them, to fight his battles against heaven and those do-gooders in town who wouldn’t take hell’s side, not even under force, and to sucker the Winchester brothers into abandoning their feathered little friend.
It would have been easy now to tell the boy that he knew his father but Azazel knew that it would tip his hand further than he wanted to. He wouldn’t have put it past the elder Winchester to have filled his boy in on his exploits. Shaking his head, Azazel chuckled, trying to look every one of his meat suit’s years. ”We all thought so at your age son. Believe me, your eyes open more as you get older and you realise what you thought was a lot is just a drop in the ocean.” The boy had seen it though, at his father’s side by all reports, and again when dear Lisa had supposedly been killed. If Ben spent too much longer with his dad then he’d find out there was a whole world of hurt just waiting for them to slip up in this town. Dean likely would’ve said he’d seen too much at Ben’s age too and the truth was he had, hell had taken a special interest in those boys. Quoting one of those mind numbing things they called movies here, the Yellow Eyed Demon grinned. ”There’s no place like home, right? Been away from what I used to call mine for far too long, but this place right here, it’s a decent enough substitute.” Azazel ran his fingers along the shafts of the arrows as he plucked them free, gathering them in a meaty paw as he looked over his shoulder at the kid, one brow cocked. ”Son if you believe everything they put in those papers then I’m gonna have to think you’re a little touched in the head. They’d have to have a whole pack of lions out here to kill the amount of people ending up in those morgues.” Forget lions, this town had every beast hell could possibly have imagined and this boy knew it. The demon turned toward the boy and offered him the arrows he held. ”So you take after your dad that way then, that’s a good thing. Bet you get your looks from your ma though, that’s where I tell my kids they get theirs from. Their mom’s proud as punch of them all.” Azazel knew that he was needling an incredibly sore spot. That would be his in here though, Lisa Braeden the carrot he dangled in front of the boy’s nose.

One thing Ben had learned the moment he and his mother were attacked by that vampire was that he couldn’t afford to let his guard down again, at least not completely. Back then he hadn’t known about the supernatural because those memories had been locked away by Castiel but not a day went by when he didn’t find himself thinking about what might have happened if he had just paid a little more attention to what was going on around them. He knew deep down that there wasn’t anything that he could have done differently but that didn’t mean that he didn’t still miss his mom to this day. For a while he had felt angry with her for keeping the truth about who his dad was from him but now he knew why she had done it – she had been trying to protect all of them. If Dean had known the truth then he would have felt obligated to stay with them and it would have made him miserable. That wasn’t something that Ben had ever wanted to happen so even though it meant that he had ended up living most of his life without knowing who his dad really was and he had spent the last few years searching for the man after his mom died he knew that in that respect things had worked out the way they were supposed to at least. For the first time in years Ben felt settled and even though Mystic Falls was dangerous he knew that he wasn’t in a hurry to leave the place. He had made a few friends during his travels but so many of the people who meant the most to him seemed to have converged in Mystic Falls and he knew that he wasn’t going to leave them behind again. He had enrolled himself in high school so he wouldn’t draw too much attention to himself and he was actually doing a lot better than he had expected now that he had finally caught up with a little help from his friends. He was still hunting on the side but it no longer consumed his whole life the way it had before and for that he was grateful. It had helped him through the darkest few years of his life but at the end of the day he was still a teenager and he knew that he wanted to enjoy that while it lasted. He knew better than to let his training fall short, though, and that was why he had ended up out in the woods that day. “I realised that a while ago,” Ben admitted. His eyes had been truly opened the day his mom had been killed and even though a part of him had wished that he could go back to the blissful ignorance that had been his life before that night he had known that it just wasn’t an option. As John spoke again, Ben felt a smile tug at the corners of his lips. “Something like that,” he nodded. “This place is different to where I grew up but I like it here,” he added. There always seemed to be so much going on in Mystic Falls and even though that wasn’t necessarily a good thing, it meant that Ben wouldn’t end up getting bored in a hurry at least. “So what do you think is behind the attacks?” he asked, unable to deny that he was curious as to just what John’s theories were. Ben couldn’t ignore the way that his heart ached when his mom was mentioned again but he wasn’t sure that he could dodge the comment the same way he had last time. “She always used to say that,” he nodded, taking the arrows from John as he handed them over before quickly changing the subject. “How many kids do you have?”AZAZEL

The boy might have suffered repeatedly thanks to the supernatural over the years but beneath that hardened surface he was just as bad as the rest of humanity at recognising the beast amongst them. A meat suit was easy enough to shrug on and worn in the right way it honestly was a disguise most couldn’t see beyond. Ben Winchester wasn’t as experienced a hunter as his dad and uncle, nowhere near as experienced as the grandparents who hadn’t lived to meet him, but still, Azazel thought, the boy honestly should’ve known better. He’d been lulled by the lined old face, by the personable old man act. Little did the boy honestly know what was burning through his veins. Ben would realise soon enough, once the powers he’d been imbued with near birth came bursting out. Would he go running to his demon-killing father? Given Dean’s penchant for sending demons back to hell, he doubted it. Maybe his sympathetic uncle, Sam’s bleeding heart and own demon fuelled experiences would surely give poor little Ben a shoulder to lean on. Eventually he would come back to the source though, the yellow eyed demon was sure of that. The boy would either channel his father and want to send his second father of sorts back to hell or he would fall in line the way that some of the other special children already seemed to be doing. A little arm twisting, a few dreams speckled with the horror that might await what remained of his family if he said no, and the boy was likely to do just what was expected of him.
For now Azazel knew he had to continued plumbing the boy’s depths, finding out just what he knew of what was going on here and where his soft spots were. His past, his poor doomed mother, his wayward father, there were plenty of sore points there. The demon pasted on a sympathetic expression, his mouth thinning as the chuckle fell away. ”No boy should have to do that at your age. You’re meant to be older and a little more jaded when that hits.” But Ben hadn’t been given that choice, his mother’s deal and his father’s mission to get rid of both sides in this little war had sealed the boy’s deal long before he’d even drawn his first breath. Azazel hummed in agreement as he studied the boy over his shoulder. ”I do too, son, I guess that gives the two of us something in common. There’s just something about this town…” There was still something that he couldn’t put his finger on about Mystic Falls but the impression he’d already gotten was the most important thing. This was the place where their war was going to be fought and the ground was already being seeded for it. The creatures had been here from the start but were only now beginning to show their dominance. ”You’re certain it’s a what and not a who?” he asked boldly. Turning back he’d held the arrows out to the boy. ”I can tell you I don’t think it’s all animals out here. Folks are always far more deadly than beasts. But now I’m giving you a bad impression of our little town here.” It was things more akin to beasts than human of course. Fangs, claws, power swimming through veins, even heaven’s brightest. As the arrows were taken Azazel slipped his hands into his pockets. ”Sounds like she was a wise woman. I’ve got myself two, boy and a girl. They’re all grown up now. Meg’s still close but my boy Tom’s moved out of town.” Killed by the Winchesters. That enough should’ve been a reason for tearing Sam and Dean to pieces but this was a far better bit of payback.
