The list of people he owed an apology to was never ending. He was used to apologising to people for being a bit of an asshole but this time he was saying sorry for threatening to kill people. Last time he switched it off he had no one to hold him accountable for his actions, but now he was getting it from all angles, as he should. Teddy and Phoebe accepted his apology, but things didn’t go to plan with Penny. He was starting to think she was just toying with his feelings. Leading him on just to break his heart eventually. Why else would she parade another man infront of Lawrence? Now he was working his way down to the more difficult people to convince he was sorry for the emotionless version of himself. Kit was lodged at the top of that list. Lawrence didn’t even know where to start with that. He was aiming to ask for his job back at the bar, but the chances were ridiculously slim. Kit would no doubt tell Lawrence to fuck off. Lawrence had spent hours flicking through them until he found something which could help Cassie, but he couldn’t find her anywhere. She wasn’t picking up her phone nor answering his messages. So the next option was to haul the grimoires over to the club, in the hopes of finding Magnus. Somewhere in the list of people he owed an apology to was Magnus. Lawrence felt bad for suggesting they killed Hector. Magnus was clearly upset his best friend was suffering and Lawrence took great pleasure in driving that pain home. Hopefully the grimoires would act as some kind of peace offering. He pushed the front door open, eyes scanning the bar for someone. The main bar was empty so he started to head downstairs when he heard a noise from Hector’s office. He tapped lightly on the door, waiting for an answer. He was fucked if Hector was behind that door, but Magnus’ voice came from inside. It didn’t calm his nerves though as he pushed the door open. There was something unnerving about Magnus sometimes. The man seemed so mild mannered, but a few wrong words and your tongue would be removed. “I’m not here to cause trouble or upset anyone. Christ knows I’ve done enough of that.” He was struggling to find someone in town he hadn’t upset, “I’m sorry for what I said about Hector. Some shit went down with Hannya and my sister and I ended up being forced to turn my humanity off but…” He placed the ancient looking books down on the desk with a thud, “Here are some grimoires that belonged to my parents. They could help Cassie.” He tapped at the one on top, “Something like this happened in 1763 in British Columbia. Some members of the coven became sick with some zombie-like virus. There are a few spells in there for Cassie to try and if they don’t work I have grimoires dating back to the 1400s.” Lawrence waited for Magnus to bounce his head off any surface in the room and tell him to leave. ━ evil notions come free ━ MAGNUS WAS LEFT TO HANDLE MOST OF Hector’s life following his best friend’s illness━or descent into madness, whatever you wanted to call it. He was happy to do it━it was one more thing that could be kept in order, allowing Hector to simply relax when his health was restored to him, instead of worrying about all the things that were waiting for him.
Thankfully, Kit kept most of the books in order and handled the day-to-day issues, so Magnus could wring his hands over the paperwork behind the scenes. Writing off most things under the business was normal━Magnus did his fair share of it━but damn, Hector.
He shuffled around some papers━keeping them neatly organized wasn’t hard. Hector’s filing system was old, perhaps older than they were, and Magnus had appreciated it (out loud and silently) multiple times. This was the way people ought to file their paperwork.
Magnus didn’t look up at the light tapping on the door, just let out a light, “Come in,” and only looked up when the person was fully inside the office.
He stiffened somewhat, frowning up at Lawrence. The boy looked a little skittish, though, and if he’d come to drop those books on Magnus’ head for revenge, it was a terrible way to execute his plan. It was the first thing out of his mouth, though━along with a curse, which Magnus swallowed his lecture for. Lawrence was likely a doomed vampire, anyway, preaching to him about higher things would be for nothing.
“‘Appens to th’best of us, son. Glad to ‘ear yer on the mend.” He said lightly, as though none of it mattered much, and looked down at the paperwork in his hands until Lawrence set down the large books━grimoires.
Magnus tucked the documents away, shut the drawer and stood finally, looking over the stack. These would definitely help. They’d be a good place to start, at the very least, because he was sure the young witch was in over her head with this━and so was Magnus. She might’ve packed a ton of magic behind her, but she was still in training, and Nicky had a business to run on top of everything else he was doing to help.
“Thank you.” Magnus said, lifting his head to look at Lawrence again. He realized this was the boy’s way of apology, of making up for the nuisance he’d caused while he was without his humanity. Magnus knew what it was like to endlessly chase forgiveness for those things, and so did Hector. There was too much of it going around to hold grudges.
He lifted a hand and clapped it on Lawrence’s shoulder, making sure he held the boy’s gaze. “This’ll be a big effort in ‘elpin’ ‘im get better. Ya’ve done yer part, lad.” Magnus nodded curtly, trying to make his understanding━and subsequent forgiveness━obvious. “And, a word of advice,” He added lightly, because he couldn’t help himself. “Ya won’t find a vampire who ‘asn’t made a mess of ‘is life while ‘is ‘umanity was off. The ‘ardest part is forgivin’ yourself.” God only knew how Magnus had struggled with it━how he still sometimes struggled with what he’d done after Philippa’s death… and his humanity hadn’t even been shut off.

It was easy for Lawrence to feel a wave of sadness whenever he looked at Magnus and Hector considering his best friend was mortal. Teddy was growing old, slowly, in front of his eyes. While decades together seemed like a long time to most, to a vampire it seemed like weeks. Magnus and Hector had been blessed with centuries of friendship. No wonder Magnus was fighting desperately to save Hector. Lawrence would do exactly the same thing for Teddy, but it was heartbreaking to think one day he’d be unable to save his friend. Old age would come for Teddy, leaving behind Lawrence. At least he had an eternity to spend with his sister though, if he played his cards right. Even though he was just over a hundred years old he’d had his fair share of brushes with death, mainly through his own stupidity. Phoebe would be fine, but Lawrence could end up having his heart ripped out for being an idiot. A vampire losing their humanity wasn’t exactly rare, but the scope of forgiveness reduced for Lawrence as he’d already done it once before. He knew what was going to happen once he shut everything down. He knew what was waiting for him on the other side. But it was either that or lose his sister. He’d rather kill a thousand people and feel the guilt of every single murder than lose Phoebe. “Thanks.” He muttered quietly before placing the books down on the time. He smiled a little as Magnus clapped his hand on his shoulder, although Lawrence’s body remained a little tense. Both him and Hector were difficult to read. Sometimes Lawrence was convinced Hector was in an awful mood, but turned out he was in a great mood. “How can I forgive myself when I hurt a lot of people… killed people. My sister nearly died because of me… because I started messing around with Hannya, who happily opens a vein for me whenever we're together.” It all boiled down to one thing though. Blood. “I’m assuming it doesn’t get any better either? Because even after a hundred years I still struggle to control myself.” If he hadn’t got control over it now, would he ever? Or would he forever want to rip people’s necks apart? MAGNUS DAYNE
