– Is it any wonder I try? –
Gabriela never expected things to turn out this way. It shouldn't have turned out this way, but the day she caught a glimpse of the Ghost Riders, her fate was sealed. There was nothing she could do to reverse her fate or change it in any way. Gabriela didn't know that she was a target until just a few hours before she was captured. It started like any other day for her. She got up early, spent time with her family, went to school, and enjoyed her classes and time there because she enjoyed spending time with her friends, and it also meant that she'd be able to see Rafael and spend time with him. Maybe it was all the rough moments they had spent together, but they ended up a lot closer than expected, and she found herself looking forward to each day at school because it meant that she'd be spending time with him and getting to know him more and more. But then things started going south, and it started when Hope looked at her weirdly when she came to see her.
"I don't think we've met before, but, uh, hi?" At first, Gabriela thought that it was some sort of elaborate joke because it had to be, right? "Oh ha, ha. That's really funny, Hope." Gabriela attempted to push past her uneasiness because Hope had looked so earnest, and when she frowned in confusion at Gabriela's words, she felt her heart drop because Hope genuinely looked like she had no idea who she was. An awkward chuckle left Hope's lips before she looked around her. "Hey, uh, let headmaster Alaric know if you need a tour guide or something, okay? I have to get to my lecture." And with that, Hope was gone. Gabriela had expected her to drop the act, but instead, she walked away like she truly believed that she had no idea who Gabriela was.
Gabriela chalked up the weird interaction to Hope being tired and instead began to set out to meet up with MG because they were supposed to get some studying done. She beamed when she saw him, jogging up to where he was sitting. "Hey! Sorry if I'm late. So, what are we tackling first? I feel like I'm behind on everything." Gabriela moved to sit down, only to stop at MG's confused look followed by that same friendly smile that he wore all the time with people. "Honestly, I feel you there. I'm down to study with you if you'd like. I'm MG, by the way. And you?" Gabriela took a small step back at his words, her lips parting in surprise at his words. "C'mon, MG. It's me. This isn't funny anymore." Gabriela said with a frown tugging at her features.
"Hey, I'm really sorry. I didn't mean to upset you. Tell me, how can I help? You seem like a really nice girl, and I would love to get to know you, but I really don't know who you are." MG's expression turned sympathetic as he looked at Gabriela, who seemed to turn paler by the second. Gabriela dropped her books and turned around to run out of the library, stopping all the people she knew along the way, but she kept getting the same question: What's your name?
They had no idea who she was.
No one knew who she was.
Gabriela wanted to see Rafael, to see if he can remember her, but she was afraid of what the answer to that question might be. It was already starting to get dark out. She needs to get out of here. She needs to go back home. Gabriela ran out of the school with tears streaming down her face and her heart beating wildly in her chest. That was when she saw something standing by one of the trees. A masked figure in a cowboy outfit. There was a gun attached to the holster, and she could see it moving to grab the gun, never taking its eyes off Gabriela. "No, no, no." Gabriela sobbed as she stepped back, running in the other direction. She could hear the sound of a horse chasing after her, but when she looked behind her, she couldn't find anything. Gabriela ran as fast as she could because she wanted nothing more than to go home. Her dads will remember her. Her twin and brother will remember her. They will.
Gabriela ran as fast as she could in the direction of her home, brushing past people who looked at her with a startled look. She tumbled down and fell so many times in her frenzy to get back home, but whenever she looked behind her, she could see the same figure chasing after her, which pulled more sobs out of her. She's not going to make it.
She's not going to make it.
Gabriela scrambled to get up, scraping her knees against the harsh ground, but she still got up, not minding the blood dripping from the wounds on her knees or how much her thighs and calves ached from running. She wasn't going to stop. Gabriela turned the corner to find the same figure standing in front of her, which pulled a startled scream from her lips. She fell back and scrambled back on her hands as she tried to get away. “Stay away!” Gabriela yelled before she finally got up and continued running, taking short cuts into alleyways to get home as fast as she could. She let out a relieved sob when she saw her house from afar, and that was when that thing started firing bullets. One of them actually hit an innocent bystander who vanished into nothing at all, like he was never there to begin with. Gabriela let out a terrified sob as she continued running, refusing to stop because she knew that the second that she stopped, she was dead.
“Please, please, please.” Gabriela patted her pockets with trembling and bloodied hands. She looked rough; she knew that. It was already starting to get dark. She fumbled with her keys, which pulled a frustrated and panicked sound from her chapped lips. That was when the door opened to reveal none other than Ethan. “Dad! Oh my god, dad.” Gabriela sobbed as she wrapped her arms tightly around Ethan. “Hey, kiddo.” Gabriela sobbed even harder when it became clear that he could remember her. “Oh my god, you know me. Everyone has already forgotten. No one knows who I am. I don't know what to do. Please.” Gabriela pulled away from the hug to look at her dad, who had a concerned look on his face. “Alright, alright. Deep breaths, okay? We'll get this sorted out, I promise.” Ethan assured Gabriela, and she only cried harder because she was just so relieved that he could remember her— “Where are your parents? Your guardian? Anyone. Do you live close to here?” Gabriela's entire world shattered as she listened to the words falling from her dad's lips. “No...” Gabriela could feel so many more tears run down her cheeks as she stared at her dad, who had no idea who she was either.
Gabriela stepped back and ran away, ignoring his calls as she moved away from the house altogether, only to come to a stop in the middle of a dark street. She turned around not long after, wiping her tears away furiously. “Where are you, you ugly bastard?!” Gabriela shouted, looking around her. “This is fun to you, isn't it?” Gabriela whispered as she looked around her for that same figure, only to find it standing not too far away from her.
Only that it wasn't alone.
Gabriela's eyes widened at the other figures on the similar horses. Gabriela stepped back, fear washing over her as she looked at them with wide eyes. “What the hell do you want?!” Gabriela shouted but heard nothing in return. Thunder cracked, and the sky soon poured down on her. The storm only picked up from there. “Well then, bring it on!” Gabriela summoned her dragon powers, but before she could use any of them, she heard a gunshot fire into the air. She looked down to find that she'd been shot, and mere seconds later, she felt herself getting sucked somewhere entirely, and all that was left behind was the raging storm as Gabriela was effortlessly wiped from existence by the Ghost Riders. She was simply not there anymore.
