Getting a taste of huge law firms when he’d been interning had been enough to convince Dylan that he was on the right path with trying to go it alone. There’d been something inherently depressing about the tiny cubicles you were crammed into if you weren’t hauling in enough money from cases to buy your way into being a partner. It was never about the client, just how many hours you could bill them for. After his first couple of summers in that environment he’d tried to flip the card and get himself a spot in the DA’s office, but it’d proved almost as bad. Overworked, short on time to focus on their clients, it was just another mountain of work that threatened to break your spirit in the end.
Dylan scooped a stack of files off of his desk, carrying them into the file room he’d had to set up when it started to take over his office. His assistant would handle it all later, but for now at least, the place looked a little less hectic. The last thing he wanted to do was having Allison walk in the door and walk straight back out again when she started seeing his office as being just as bad as the other options out there for her. Maybe Nathan would plead his case for him, maybe he already had. That connection between them was probably what had convinced Allison to take the job in the first place. It was good seeing his oldest friend happy.
He wasn’t about to start digging into the clutter of his own life. Being married to the job wasn’t exactly where he’d once seen himself going, but he was both a victim of his own success here and of the sort of bad relationship luck it felt like he’d inherited at times. Glancing up at the clock on the wall, he smoothed a hand down the front of his shirt. There wasn’t time to start lamenting that either, Allison was due at any moment and she was here for some legal experience, not to hear about any of that.
As the elevator pinged, Dylan walked back out into the reception area. There were plenty of other businesses on this floor, but at this time in the morning people were still slow to drift in. By nine the building would be humming, especially the newspaper offices on the floors below. He opened the front door of the office, catching Allison approaching the door. ”Morning. Figured it had to be you. Come on in.” Stepping back, he gestured Allison into the office. ”It’s not too early is it? I’m always in by 7.30, you don’t have to be though. I’m flexible here.” His assistant wouldn’t be in until 8.45 anyway, ready for the official opening time of 9. That didn’t mean the phone wouldn’t start ringing before then – either the phone out here in reception, or his cell, although he’d learned pretty damn fast that handing out his personal number just meant that he never got to switch off from the job.

━ as the hours pass, i will let you know ━ HAVING FINALLY GRADUATED FROM COLLEGE, Allison felt like the freest person in the world. There was no longer the pressure of having to make her family proud, to do the thing her mother wanted beyond the grave, especially since the Argent had never slipped academically. It was funny though, she had slipped within relationships with others, her friends, her romance and even the relationship with her father, but nothing impacted her studies. Though at the end of her junior year, Allison realised where she was going wrong and decided to recover as much as she could.
While she was successful in most aspects, there was still the biting feeling that Allison could slip, fall back into herself at any given time, despite the promises she had made to others. Knowing she needed to speak out about it, Allison confided in Nate, Stiles and Scott and all three reassured her in the way she needed. To ensure her mental capacity would be stable as well as to work towards her future.
Working within a law firm was something that scratched at the hunter's brain for a long while. She had always wanted to help others in some sort, but with issues and the supernatural consuming most of her life, Allison was unsure where to begin. Luckily, she knew that being an intern for a law firm firstly would be the easiest choice. And even more luckier for the Argent, her boyfriend was close friends with someone who owned his own law firm. Dylan Cooper was a familiar name and face no less, with the two of them meeting at least once or twice throughout Allison's relationship with Nate.
With emails going back and forth and a day set up to get herself settled in and started, Allison had woken up bright and early, escaping her home in the middle of the night to stay over at Nate's - gossiping with Leanne firstly of course - and deciding to leave from there the same morning. Hair straightened, clothes ironed and her face brightened, the hunter didn't expect the door to be held, nor did she anticipate on seeing Dylan's face so early.
"Hey, good morning." She began, quietly thanking Dylan as she stepped through, heading inside and waiting for him to take the lead. "No this is fine..I'm usually up this early I suppose." The night terrors had somewhat..blessed her in that aspect, always doing more than enough to wake her up just shy of 7 or 8 am almost daily. "Is..this the floor you're usually on?" She questioned, looking around at how rather quiet it was. There was the general stereotype of lawyers never taking the time for themselves, putting their all into cases.

Even without Nate highly recommending Allison, he probably would’ve taken her on. Academia might have been easy for him, the years he’d skipped ahead in school giving him a challenge in a good way. He knew it wasn’t the same for everybody though. Some people struggled through impediments like dyslexia, others had the weight of tragedy upon them. Either way he appreciated people who were able to overcome things like that and who continued to fight, even once they’d come out the other side of it all. His mom would’ve hated hearing it, but Dylan considered himself – and her – as part of that club. Eric had cost them so much when he’d disappeared with Mr Halstead’s money and it had taken years to get their heads above water again. This place was proof of how far they’d come since they’d returned home to an empty apartment.
Maybe Allison would eventually move on to some other line of work, but for as long as she wanted to work here, there’d be a job for her. That was what friends – and decent people – did for one another. Having gone through internships himself while he’d been at law school, Dylan had been happy to set one up here, making sure he outlined the duties they were gonna be involved in the job. It wasn’t like he was gonna struggle with work for her given how his practice had taken off.
Dylan closed the door after Allison, then stepped around her, leading the way towards his office. The space wasn’t palatial but he’d managed to squeeze another desk in there for her to work at. If things kept going at this rate then maybe he’d have to rent a bigger space in the building, one that could handle multiple offices for his staff. That was a scary thought. ”I thought I was gonna be the only sucker for that sort of punishment here,” he mused. ”My assistant will be in later, the office doesn’t officially open until 9, but that doesn’t stop the phone from ringing.” He’d leave those calls to the answer phone this morning though.
Stepping into his office behind her, Dylan gestured to one of the client chairs set in front of his own desk. He slipped behind it, pausing for just a moment before he settled into his seat. He’d give her a tour of his entire office space afterwards – not that there was a great deal to it. ”For now,” Dylan admitted. ”When I opened up the practice here it was just me on my own. Now between me, you and my assistant I guess it’s gonna be a bit of a squeeze. I’m hoping to make it a family practice when my mom finally graduates law school.” Dylan gestured towards the desk he had set up for Allison. ”Are you comfortable sharing this office with me? I could maybe clear out some of the file storage room if you wanted something of your own? It’s even smaller than in here though.” Speaking to the building owners about a new space was definitely going on his to do list for later in the week.

━ as the hours pass, i will let you know ━ SMILING AS DYLAN CLOSED THE door, Allison caught on quickly as he directed her towards his office. Smiling at his joke and nodding in understanding as he mentioned the official opening time, the Argent couldn't help but laugh at his comment about the phone. "People simply forget even law firms and businesses need time to rest also."
Stepping into the office, the hunter took a seat almost immediately as Dylan suggested, smiling up at him as he made his way around, sitting across from her. Allison knew what she was getting herself into, taking on a role in a smaller firm, but it was fine for her. She knew this is what she wanted, and even the smallest of things started from somewhere. "That's fine." She began, sitting up a little straighter.
"We all start somewhere..and for me, I'm glad I was able to meet you, no less because of Nate." The Argent paused for a moment, turning around to look amongst the space in the office and at the desk he had set up for her.
"No-no, this is perfectly fine honestly. As long as you're fine with me being in a closer proximity, I'm comfortable if you are." Allison was simply grateful for the opportunity, she wouldn't of even minded if she had a closet for sitting space.

”Justice never sleeps,” Dylan said in a gravelly Batman voice before he chuckled. That was fine in the comic books, but in real life working that much was just a shortcut to burnout. He’d seen his mom approaching that point after his dad had left and he’d done everything in his power then to try and take some of the weight off of him. Dylan knew that she planned on returning the favour eventually, but for now his mom was still in law school. Maybe she’d help out over the summer, when she had the time, for now he was going to be relying on Allison – if she stuck with him with the hours they were gonna be putting in. With her there, they’d hopefully end up a little shorter.
Just having a weekend where he didn’t have to take calls or run down to the station to handle a client was the dream for now. Lie ins had never been his way, even before he was working, but being able to meet friends for lunch occasionally, or just taking a weekend away would feel like a miracle. A little brain reset and then back at his desk Monday morning, he wasn’t asking for much.
Explaining his schedule to Allison had left him feeling a little guilty for almost encouraging her to get there the same time he did, but it seemed like it wasn’t all that far out of what she’d expected anyway. ”Don’t feel like you have to get here early just to handle it,” he assured her, glancing at the answer phone. ”We’ve got the machines set up for a reason.” Dylan slanted her a smile, hoping it sounded reassuring at least.
The corner of his mouth twitched higher as Allison started reassuring him instead. Dylan studied the desk he’d set up for her, figuring he could add anything more she might realise she needed down the line. At the mention of Nate, he looked back at her. ”Same,” he assured her. ”He was always the one trying to drag me away from the books when we were kids. I guess he’s always been good at knowing just how to help someone, even if they don’t know they need it.” It was no wonder that Nate had become a cop after all of that. Rather than putting them on opposing sides of the whole justice system, it just seemed to give them another thing in common.
Hiring the receptionist had been a matter of desperation, and the set up of the office, with reception being like an ante-room that led back to his office, had made it easy. Squeezing someone else in had come out of desperation too, but there was far less room to set it up in a way that would give each of them extra space of their own. Dylan held his hands up, like he was warding off the idea that he wasn’t comfortable with it. ”I’m definitely fine with it,” he promised. ”It makes the whole settling in thing a little easier, you’ll see or hear everything that’s going on. Do you want a tour of the file room or do you want to jump straight in at the deep end with a round up of the cases currently on the books?” The files for those – or at least the paper notes he liked to keep – were stacked in a pile on the corner of his desk. Maybe grabbing some coffee before they started on those would’ve been a wise move.

━ as the hours pass, i will let you know ━ SMILING A LITTLE WIDER AT Cooper's attempts of relieving the tenseness Allison Argent felt, she was simply close to snorting at his attempt of a Batman joke. Nate had warned her that Dylan Cooper was a ...'jokester', but nothing could be worse than Nate's terrible puns or dad jokes in the lateness of the night.
Feeling confident that she understood what he was getting at, Allison couldn't help but laugh quietly once more. "Got it. Too burnt out? Let the machines take the work. Feeling bright and right as rain with enough caffeine in my system?..No problem on coming in." She hoped he knew she was joking, but of course her first priority was to take the job and the role overall seriously.
She had no intentions on letting work pile up the same way she did once upon a time in college. Life was serious now and the Argent planned on taking it all completely serious. "Strange you say that..he and his sister used to do the same to me." Allison couldn't help but grin then, recalling the memories to when she would be cooped up in a corner, doing her best to understand a complex book. It wasn't until Allison met both Nate and his younger sister Leanne - who eventually became one of the Argent's best friends. "Still, I'm glad to be working with you..for whatever thats worth."
Contemplating her choices, Allison felt it was best to have a quick tour of the file room before diving straight into the current cases. "Tour first, just so I'm not panicking on a random Wednesday morning about not being able to find a case..but then we can get straight into it." She thought it to be a clever suggestion at least, as it would prepare her for the ultimate worst in the future. "By any chance..do you have any coffee around?..I feel I'll need to be overly caffeinated for something like this." She couldn't help but grin then, knowing what she was getting herself into.

”Exactly!” Dylan chuckled, pointing a finger at Allison. There were times, when his schedule was back to back appointments that he wished there was a way to split himself into a half dozen parts at once. The answer phone helped at times like that, but he still had to octopus his way through life, working on all those things at once. ”Honestly, though, any time it feels like getting too much, take a break. I’m not gonna make you stick to some sort of insane schedule.” Being driven himself didn’t mean that he was gonna make everybody else suffer through it with him, especially when burn out was rife in this line of work.
Nostalgia settled like a warm weight in the pit of his stomach as they talked about Nate. Maybe the guy’s ears were burning with all the compliments being thrown around, but if there was anybody that deserved them it was Nate. Dylan bobbed his hand, looking back from his desk to Allison. ”I guess we’ve both got Nate to thank for where we are now. It’s no surprise he ended up working in law enforcement.” Always giving, generous, brave, Nate was everything that Sheriff Forbes could possibly ask for. Blushing faintly, Dylan grinned at Allison. ”That’s worth a lot, believe me. I wouldn’t want to have to go back to Nate and admit that I chased you off on the first day. I’m glad this looks like it’s working out.” He really was gonna have to thank Nate for that the next time he saw him. For probably the fiftieth time since they’d met, his friend was saving him.
Feeling like the pieces were clicking into place, Dylan started considering just how quickly Allison was gonna end up in the deep end of all the work. He’d definitely avoid telling her that the mile high stacks of filing in the file room were waiting to end up back in the filing cabinets. Dylan held his hands up straight, warding off the idea that he’d throw her in quite like that. ”I promise, I wouldn’t do that to you.”
He gestured her out of his office – their office – ahead of him, then led the way down the hall to the next door. This room was smaller, and at the rate the business was growing, it wouldn’t be too long before they outgrew that too. Dylan paused with his hand on the door, wincing faintly before he laughed. ”Sorry, I should’ve offered that first. Sure, there’s always some brewing. I wouldn’t make it through the day without it.” The last room was little more than a shoebox. It had a spot for a coat rack, not that he ever used it much, and a small counter with a microwave and a coffee machine on it. ”How do you take it?” he asked, tugging the basket full of pods over. When he’d started out it’d just been an ancient coffee pot and black coffee, as strong as he could brew it. As the practice had grown, things had gotten a little grander.

━ as the hours pass, i will let you know ━ LAUGHING ALONG WITH DYLAN, ALLISON felt more comfortable and confident in her role here. For now and even in the future. She appreciated being able to work for someone that was able to cut the bullshit, to navigate forward with either much-needed bluntness or just overall honesty. "Thank you. I mean it when I say I hope this all goes well...Even when it feels like the office is burning into a million pieces."
Allison was no stranger to the wonderfulness that was being burnt out. She felt it in college, felt it in relationships, especially when she had just been brought back. It was the cause for her much needed break from almost..everyone. Even from her father. But as they spoke about Nate, the nostalgia of their memories swept over the Argent's expression. Most if not all of her best memories had been spent with Nate and Leanne. Aside from the friends she had made when the Argent moved to Beacon Hills, she had those moments of happiness with just her two friends for the longest while also. "Right..I always knew he'd find his way back to being able to give back to others." It simply reflected Nate's caregiver type of attitude also.
Laughing softly as Dylan rose his hands, promising that he wouldn't do that to her, the Argent nodded. She knew how chaotic real-life jobs could get. She used to treat her studies as a full-time job no less. There was never a time that the hunters floors weren't covered in stacks of papers, whether it was filled with study notes, scribbles of her thoughts, essay plans, or random notes and reminders that she needed. Allison knew it all. She knew exactly what she was getting herself into. "I'm prepared for anything. Promise." She revealed, keeping her smile wide.
Following Dylan's gesture, Allison followed behind him, noticing the difference in size of the rooms and where certain things were. Allison knew she would have to make a mental (and some kind of physical) note to remind herself - at least for the next few weeks. "Black, strong, weak, with cream and sugar or without..I'm not particularly picky." She admitted, as long as the caffeine kept her awake, she couldn't care less. "Am..I expected to remember your own favourite..or order?..For any future coffee runs?.."

Eventually he’d probably have put an ad in the local paper for new staff. Assistant wanted for a lawyer who’s about to lose his mind through overwork. Maybe he’d have gotten lucky with someone half decent, but he would’ve been taking a chance. Thanks to Nate the guess work had been taken out of it all. There was a relief to it that had him smiling reassuringly at Dylan. ”I’m pretty sure it is. If it doesn’t, let me know. I’m not the sort of lawyer that avoids communication.” He’d always been the sort that believed in transparency instead and so far his clients seemed to appreciate it. If he was lucky Allison would feel the same way. There’d been a time in his life when Nate had been the one to hear everything that was going on in his life – including the stuff he was keeping from his mom so she didn’t end up spending all of her time worrying about him. It was a give and take, one he’d missed once he’d gone off to college and the friendship had stretched so far out that neither one of them had realised that the other had moved down here. Dylan smiled at Allison in agreement. ”Same. He’s just one of those guys who seems to be happiest when they’re helping people.” He’d aspired to be the same, trying to make sure now that people like him and his mom had been didn’t get chewed up by those who took advantage of them. Allison already seemed prepared to enter that fight with him. Maybe the amount of work he’d mentioned seemed daunting, but she was still here and it was a good sign. Dropping his hands, Dylan prepared to take her on the tour that he’d offered. It would be short at least, the few rooms he’d been able to rent at the start didn’t take up space on the floor. He’d just managed to squeeze a hell of a lot of stuff into them. ”I’ll keep that in mind … and I’ll try not to take advantage of it,” he said with a chuckle. ”I’ll ease you into it. No late finishes for at least a month.” The promise was making jokingly, but he’d try and stick to it for now. Throwing Allison too far into the deep end felt like it would just end up backfiring on him and he wouldn’t do it to a friend anyhow. Crap. He should’ve remembered the coffee, offering it the minute she’d walked in through the door. That would’ve been easing her into it all, instead of charging straight at the work side of things. Changing direction, he led her to the little staff room. ”Anything to get caffeine into your system?” he asked. Dylan plucked two pods out and popped one into the machine, setting the cup into its spot before he turned it on. ”I’m not expecting you to fetch coffee for me. I can definitely do that myself, but … if you do end up making some, I’m a sucker for the old fashioned black and strong with three spoonfuls of sugar. I’m not picky either though. If it gets to the point where I’m desperate I’ll drink it any way you can brew it. If we ever end up ordering anything in, for late nights or lunches, I’m happy to pay for it. There’s an office credit card in my desk. Are you picky with that stuff or is that another I’ll take it any way I can?” He was definitely in the latter category. With his mom still out until late every night he’d gotten into the rhythm – a bad one – of eating out far too often.
