Tugging his coat closer around himself Elijah settled on the bench in the town square. Dark eyes flicked over the printed pages, taking in what passed as news in Mystic Falls in a brief glance. In comparison to the Financial Times or Wall Street Journal the local newspaper was hardly riveting but in a way it held his interest more these days. With his family preparing to descend upon the place where they had been born a thousand years before it wouldn’t be long before their name was splashed across the front page that currently held little more than the announcement for the local Christmas celebrations. Just a few short weeks ago it had been talk of animal attacks that had occupied the same space, the text far more salacious then, warning those in town of what was lurking in their midsts. A mind as sharp as his wasn’t needed to read between the lines and realise just who was calling Mystic Falls home these days. The presence of a Petrova doppelganger, of three in fact, was merely the tip of the iceberg. Werewolves and vampires were practically on every street corner, although that had been true in his day, his original day, too.
Those dark eyes rose, trailing over those making their way through the square, bundled up against the air that grew colder with each passing day. The populace was never aware of who was living amongst them, although some, he imagined, had been compelled to keep them as clueless as possible. Knowing Niklaus he would soon create a ruckus big enough to necessitate more having their memories adjusted, as soon as he made his way into town and discovered not just Elena Gilbert here but Katerina and Tatia as well. Feeling the distant prickle of his brother’s Sauron like gaze between his shoulderblades Elijah snapped the newspaper closed and pushed his way to his feet. Tatia was safely ensconced in the Salvatore Boarding House, Katerina had no doubt gone to ground somewhere in the town, but Elena Gilbert … he suspected she was still unaware of the danger she was in through no fault of her own. Frowning in consternation over the rock and hard place he would soon find his way between he pushed himself to his feet. Head lowered, eyes narrowed he careened into a passer by. One hand shot out, grasping the young man by the elbow to steady him. ”Forgive my clumsiness,” Elijah murmured, pausing as he glanced up at the dark haired young man. He narrowed his eyes faintly, head tilting to one side as he regarded him. The hand fell away, eyes remaining narrowed as that sixth sense buzzed in the back of his mind.

Mystic Falls. The name itself didn’t mean much to Henrik, in fact it was a name that he had yet to hear during the short time he had spent on Earth when he had been able to escape Hell for a while, but from what Crowley had told him the town held so much more significance than he ever could have thought. It was built on the land that had once belonged to the village he had grown up in, the village that he had died in, so it seemed only right that that was where he should find himself heading now. For the last eight years Henrik had believed his family to have died a thousand years ago but he had recently learned that that wasn’t the case after all, they were very much alive and they were also heading to Mystic Falls. It was a little difficult to believe that after such a long time they were all converging in one place but it made sense that that was where Crowley had decided to send them. Henrik had one mission and one mission only, he had to find his siblings, reconnect with them and recruit them to Crowley’s cause. A war was coming, one that was sure to result in heavy casualties all around, but if he could convince his family to side with Crowley, the demon that had resurrected him and brought him up for the last eight years, then he stood a chance of winning the war. To begin with Henrik had felt betrayed after learning that his family were still alive he now he was unsure whether Crowley had lied to him directly or simply hadn’t known. Either way it didn’t really matter though, Crowley had looked after him and he had helped make him the man he was today so Henrik knew that he needed to show him some loyalty and do as he had asked. That didn’t mean that it was going to be easy, though, in fact quite the contrary. While it was true that he had only one official mission the truth was that there was something else that Henrik wanted to do as well, he wanted to become a part of the Mikaelson family once more. Crowley had been his only family for the last eight years and while he had no intention of turning his back on the demon he knew that he wanted something more, he wanted the siblings that he had grown up with back again once more. Whether he would get his wish or not remained to be seen but he could only hope that it would all work out. For now he knew that he wanted to protect his siblings if he could, he didn’t know how they were still alive but he wanted to protect them from his world for a while. While he was growing up they had all tried their best to look out for him and protect him but now he knew that it was his turn to look out for them. Having checked himself into the local motel, Henrik dumped the few things he had in the room before heading out into the town. He knew he needed to get something to eat but for the time being at least he wanted to get to know the town a little. It was as he was wandering the streets that someone bumped into him and Henrik felt a hand shooting out to steady him. “Don’t worry, no harm done,” he said automatically before looking into the face of the person who had bumped into him and recognising him immediately. The hair and clothes had changed but there wasn’t a doubt in Henrik’s mind that the man before him was his brother. “Are you ok?” he asked, unable to ignore the way that Elijah was studying him. He knew he had changed a lot since his family had last seen him but he couldn’t deny that he was curious as to whether any of them would recognise him. ELIJAH MIKAELSON

| if i'm a danger to myself Just think what I could do to you |
Considering the lives they had been forced to lead for centuries by their parents, regrets and what ifs had little part in their lives. If he could have turned the clock back and protected Tatia, prevented her from agreeing to his mother’s plan to use her blood to turn her children, Elijah knew he would have done in a heartbeat, had he been able to intercede when it came to his brother’s determination to kill Katerina to shed the bonds holding his wolf side in check, had he kept Niklaus under control in New Orleans, had he even been able to stop his younger brother from giving in to Henrik’s pleas to see the wolves that night. Life as it was now in Mystic Falls would have been vastly different. How many lives would have been saved by that one decision to remain safe instead of exploring? It was a number he had forced himself to stop counting long ago. Despite all there was in the world, all the supernatural creatures, magic, fierce determination and bravery, there was no time machine, no way to snap his fingers and go back to the point where their lives had begun to crumble. The pain caused by a thousand years of bad decisions and foolish choices could not be erased and given what he had recently learned about his own actions back then, Elijah knew that he would rather live with the truth than the veil of a lie, something that only led you to delude yourself into happiness.
Had he been more apt to naivety these days, he might have believed that he could convince his head strong younger brother to allow Tatia, Katerina and Elena Gilbert to live. Naivety had been abandoned for the most part, eroded by the centuries. Like memories it had become fuzzy around the edges before disappearing entirely. That sense of dread, the knowledge of what his brother could do had remained, however, and it was the thought of their impending doom that had driven Elijah to his feet, the unusual preoccupation driving him right into the path of another. In just a heartbeat those memories he had thought long tattered to mist sharpened once more. A feeling of familiarity he had suffered often over the centuries, when a face from the past was thrown in front of his own burning beneath the wool coat he wore. The hand that should have fallen away had remained on the young man’s arm, that nostalgic blast of the past, of a long lost brother whose future had disappeared with one disastrous decision leaving him frozen for a moment. Elijah swallowed hard, tilting his head back as he finally straightened, hand falling away. ”I suppose I should be the one posing the question to you,” he murmured, his mouth twitching faintly as he studied the young man. He had been assured that no harm was done and yet he hadn’t rushed back on his way. Elijah’s hand smoothed down his coat as he considered the man’s question. ”I was just … reminded of someone I once knew. You have the look of him, your eyes, your jaw…” Elijah’s eyes narrowed once again as he continued to study the young man. He would have asked if his family had lived in the region for long but it was a moot point. His family line had never been allowed to continue in that way, his mother’s actions long ago preventing that.

For a long time, far too long in fact, Henrik had been stopped from living his life the way he should have done. He knew he shouldn’t blame Crowley, the demon had brought him back from the dead and he had taught him how to not only tap into his powers but how to strengthen them as well. He had been given a second chance, one that he was thankful for, but the time he had spent in the real world had been pretty limited. He had been allowed to leave Hell on occasion when he had needed to do something for Crowley and he had managed to sneak out from time to time, of course, but he knew it would take a little while to get used to the way things were now. Everything had changed so much to the way it had been when he was born but he knew it wouldn’t take him long to pick everything up. It was strange knowing that he was now standing in the town that had been built on the land he had been born on but the truth was that somehow it still felt like home. He had spent the best part of eight years living in Hell but now he was finally able to live his life the way he wanted to away from all of that and he wanted to make the most of it. He had a mission from Crowley, the demon wanted him to track down his siblings and persuade them to join his side in the coming war, and the truth was Henrik was nervous about that. For years he had been led to believe that they had died a thousand years ago but now he was expected to find them and act like nothing had happened. He would be lying if he said he wasn’t scared that they might have forgotten him and the last thing he wanted was for them to end up being dragged into his world but deep down he knew that he wanted to see them again. After being around demons so long he knew he wanted nothing more than to finally be back with the people who loved him once more, his family. He had no idea how they were still alive such a long time after his death but he knew that he needed to protect them if he could, he couldn’t stand to have them back in his life once more only to lose them again. He wanted to reach out but he had thought that he would be able to psyche himself up for it first. As it happened, however, it was his first day in town and he had already bumped into his older brother. “I’m fine,” Henrik assured him. There really wasn’t any harm done, he was more worried about just what he should say to Elijah. He knew he needed to tell him who he was but he didn’t even know if Elijah and the others would remember him. The man before him looked different to the Elijah that he had known but there could be no mistaking that it was him although he had no idea what he had been through over the last thousand years. As Elijah said he was reminded of someone he used to know Henrik felt his heart leap at the thought that perhaps he hadn’t been forgotten after all. “May I ask who it is that I reminded you of?” he asked as he looked over at Elijah, needing to make sure before he said anything. Thanks to his mother he had suffered a thousand years of losses. Some, Elijah knew, like his brother Niklaus, merely closed themselves off to the heartache, ignored their grief or turned it into a burning anger that drove them to lash out at those around them. Better to make others suffering rather than to feel it yourself. He had never been like his brother in that regard, each loss wounded him deeply, leaving scars upon a heart that had never quite recovered from that first loss. Niklaus had always seemed the closest to Henrik, he had been the one to give in to his brother’s whim that night to see the wolves, but they had all doted on their youngest sibling. To have lost him so violently, followed so quickly by Tatia, it had torn at the very heart of him. Five hundred years later and that heart had only just begun to heal when it had been broken once again. The pattern had repeated itself over the centuries, each loss adding another crack, another bruise. Yet, on the surface the pain had not been revealed. For his brother’s sake he had set it aside, the Elijah Mikaelson he had been on the surface never truly reflecting the man within. The man within still grieved the loss of his younger brother and the woman he had first given his heart to. Having Tatia back, albeit at a distance, the gulf between them rendered cavernous by his having killed her, had brought those long scarred over parts of his heart back to life. Seeing Henrik in a young man a thousand years after his brother had drawn his last breath on this land was surely only a symptom of that renewed feeling of grief.
It had been automatic to offer apologies for the collision, to reach out a hand to steady the young man. Had it also been automatic to see Henrik in the dark eyes, cleft chin and square jaw? Perhaps. His own reflection held echoes of the same and over the years he’d often considered just what his brother might have looked like if he’d lived into adulthood. It was not fair to project that future onto a stranger, however, despite his assurances. Elijah knew he should merely have murmured his apology and moved on but that similarity … In the end it was embarrassment that had him drawing back, relocating his civility. At his question Elijah felt his mouth twitch into a nostalgic smile, the affection he had felt for his youngest brother revealed in the crack that had appeared in his usual mask. ”My youngest brother, Henrik,” Elijah admitted softly, glancing down the street as the words made their way almost painfully from his throat. It was likely less than a dozen miles from here to the spot where Niklaus had lain Henrik’s bloodied body down in their village. ”Unfortunately he was lost before he reached your age.” And their family had never recovered from the loss, it had broken their mother, had torn at Niklaus’ then tender heart. Clearing his throat faintly, feeling it constrict with the strength of his grief, Elijah looked back at the young man. ”I don’t suppose your family are from these parts?” Not that it could possibly have meant that the young man was descended from his own. Thanks to his mother their line had died with their turning, none of them had discovered the joy of fatherhood, a joy that had been so close to his fingertips when they had passed.

Everything had seemed so simple for Henrik when he was younger. He had seen the abuse that his siblings had suffered at the hands of their father, none more so than Niklaus, and he had even managed to get on his father’s bad side himself from time to time but one thing Henrik had never doubted was that his family had loved him. It was a different time back then and there were times when he had found himself wishing that he could break away from just how protective his family were even if only for a little while but he had been young and naive back then and that had been his downfall. He had always known the risks about going outside when the moon was full and the wolves turned, that was something that his whole family had stressed for as long as he could remember but he had always been adventurous and his curiosity had ended up getting the better of him. Had he not decided to break his parents’ rules and go out to watch the wolves turn that night then things could easily have turned out very different not just for him but for his family as well. He still didn’t know how his siblings were still alive after a thousand years, that was something that Crowley seemed to want him to figure out himself, but deep down he knew that the cause of their prolonged lives couldn’t be anything good and he knew he just had to hope that there would still be at least a little of the brothers and sisters he had loved back then still inside each of them. Things should have turned out differently for all of them, there wasn’t a doubt in his mind about that, they should have all had the chance to start families of their own and grow old surrounded by the people they loved but that hadn’t happened. A part of him was sad about that but then again he knew that if that had been the case for his siblings then he wouldn’t have the chance to reconnect with them now so there was one thing to be thankful for at least. Either way Henrik knew that he wanted to have his siblings back in his life, he needed them after being surrounded by Crowley and his demons for so long, but there was more to it than that. He needed to fulfil his promise to Crowley and try to recruit them to the demon’s side in the coming war but he knew that could wait. Originally he had been conflicted about seeking his family out straight away since he hadn’t wanted to turn their lives upside down and throw them into a world of demons and other monsters if they weren’t already aware of them but bumping into Elijah on his first day in town had happened by chance but a part of him couldn’t help but wonder if it was fate. He could have pretended he was someone else but the moment that thought had crossed his mind he had dismissed it. He knew that he couldn’t do that, he needed to be honest but he couldn’t deny that he wanted to see if Elijah even remembered him first. It had been a thousand years so he wouldn’t have blamed his brother if he had forgotten but the smile that formed on his face before he spoke and the way he said the words that left his lips was enough to make his heart ache and he quickly blinked away the tears that had started to sting his eyes. He could see the pain on Elijah’s face and he knew that he wanted to rid him of that. “Actually, they are,” he nodded, knowing that he needed to choose his next words carefully. He needed a way to make Elijah realise that it really was him and a fond smile touched his lips as a memory came to him, his old nickname for his brother gained from all of the stories Elijah had told him about the legendary Norse warriors when he was growing up, stories that had always been his favourites. “Don’t you recognise me, Haki?”ELIJAH MIKAELSON

As a child it had seemed easy to believe that the very land they were living on was magical. It had been the only land he had known, one thick with lush tree growth, its air heavy with stories of the old world, of fantastical creatures like the wolves they lived cheek by jowl with. Magic was a part of everyday life, handed down from generation to generation and while he’d shown no real affinity for it himself Elijah knew that perhaps one day he would be able to do as his mother did. In the meantime he had been happy to continue life the way it had seemed to be naturally flowing for him. He had trained with his younger brothers, practicing with wooden swords when they had been but Henrik’s age, moving onto the forged blades as soon as Mikael had deemed them too old for toys. Elijah had never found himself too old for the stories, however, he had told those he had once heard over and over to Henrik, imagining that perhaps one day he might see a land far from the one he was living in. Tatia would be by his side of course, Lukas too, he would show them the world. Unfortunately death had taken that chance away, snatching his brother so young, his own hunger tearing Tatia from his side. In the centuries since he had seen the world, followed the trails of those Viking sea warriors from one end of the globe to another, but it hadn’t been the way he had ever hoped or planned for.
Fate had given him another chance however, dropping Tatia literally in his path as he’d driven into Mystic Falls for the first time in a thousand years. There was still the obstacle of his having killed her, her fear, his guilt over his actions, to surmount but hope was still burning that forgiveness would one day come. Seeing the dark haired young man, studying a face so like his brother’s after he had almost knocked him down had made him realise that there was likely no chance Henrik would ever be returned to him that way. Fate was rarely generous once, let alone twice. Henrik was lost to him for good and all he would have of his brother were those memories and the echoes of the young man in the faces of others. Elijah had felt a lump in his throat form at the mention of his brother’s name. It had been far too long since he had spoken it aloud. It remained there, wrapped like a fist in his neck as he’d asked after the young man’s family, a lineage perhaps descended from those who had made the trip here with his own family.
Elijah swallowed hard, trying to force it away as the man confirmed the thought. ”I had suspected so…” His words trailed off as the brief comment was followed by a hammer blow. Suddenly suspicious Elijah took a half step away, his head tilting, dark eyes narrowing as he studied the man in front of him. ”How did you learn that name?” he asked in a hoarse whisper, the very sound of it bringing back Henrik’s voice. It had been one of the stories he’d told his brother the most, the one he’d always yearned to emulate. When Tatia had arrived back he had believed it to be fate toying with him, only for him to be proven wrong. Had lightning struck twice in the same place? His voice cracked as he forced it past the lump in his throat. ”Henrik? Surely, it cannot be. You were but … brother…” The word was barely a whisper as he grabbed the young man into a hug. What had he done to deserve these second chances?

Henrik had never understood why Crowley had sought to bring him back a thousand years after his death. To begin with he had been overjoyed at being given a second chance at life but that second chance had soon started to turn into some pretty intense magical training and a prison sentence since Crowley hadn’t been too keen about him going out into the real world unless it was to do him a favour. That hadn’t stopped Henrik from sneaking out whenever he could, however, and now he was glad that he had done considering it had given him the chance to become better acquainted with the world that he now found himself in. Finally he was starting to see the bigger picture, Crowley wanted him to reconnect with his brothers and sister and sway them to join the demon’s side in the upcoming war and Henrik couldn’t help but wonder if that had perhaps been his plan all along. He didn’t know whether his family would be willing to listen to Crowley or not and the truth was he hadn’t even known if they would remember him but now he was starting to feel hope build within himself. Crowley hadn’t told him how his siblings were still alive after so long and he knew that he would find out sooner or later but a part of him had wondered whether they would even still be the people that he had known back then. Still, he knew he needed to know one way or another and he was pretty sure that Elijah was the best person to start with so he was glad that he had bumped into his older brother first. Whether or not Elijah would recognise him Henrik hadn’t been sure but as his brother confirmed he had suspected that he had family that came from the area, Henrik felt a smile form on his face which stayed in place even as Elijah’s expression turned to one of suspicion at the mention of his old nickname for his brother. “Surely you have not forgotten, I asked you to tell me his story so many times when we were younger,” he said although he completely understood his brother’s confusion. A thousand years had passed since he had died and here Henrik was an older version of himself. He knew it had to be a lot to take in and his expression softened as his brother’s voice cracked as he spoke. Before he could even say anything Elijah had pulled him into a hug and Henrik wrapped his arms around his brother, hugging him back tightly. “It is so good to see you, I have missed you brother,” he admitted, quickly wiping away that tears that stung his eyes. For years he had lived in Hell believing his family to have died years before so to know that they were still alive after all was a lot to take in, to say the least. “There is so much to explain and we have so much to catch up on,” he added, not sure whether Elijah would want to do that where they were or whether he would rather catch up over a drink or something. The doubting part of his mind, the one that was constantly on the lookout for danger, should have been warier about the ‘gifts’ being given to him since he had shown up in town but the larger parts of his mind, his heart, were merely grateful for the second chances he was being offered. Something powerful had brought Tatia back to him, something that still hadn’t revealed itself. Elijah knew there was a chance it could be merely waiting for him to find true happiness once again before it snatched that away but he was also still naïve enough to believe that maybe this was some sort of reward for clinging on to his humanity so hard for so long. He had never stopped trying to hold on to that part of himself that had once called this place home, that had loved his siblings and his parents unconditionally until that love had time and again been shattered by those around him. Was he deserving of that sort of reward? Given the way he had taken Tatia’s life, and countless others since, he doubted that but Elijah knew that he would truly be a foolish man if he chose to look this gift horse in the mouth. Whether or not that horse was a gift of the Greeks, a Trojan Horse prepared to blow his life apart, it did not matter, this brief time with Tatia, with his brother would be worth needing to pick those shattered parts of his life up again afterwards.
This could quite simply be something bearing his brother’s memories, spelled to draw him in and stop any form of Mikaelson power re-emerging in this town but the moment the young man had spoken a name no other had ever called him the cautious part of him had started to disintegrate. Was it truly such a surprise that Henrik had been returned to them after the same had been done for Tatia? It shouldn’t have been, even with this Henrik standing probably a decade older than he had when they had last been together. Letting out a long breath, Elijah shook his head. He could still hear his own voice, telling those tales of old around the fire, distracting his brother from some of the dangers that had lain around them with the stories of bravery and daring. ”It was your favourite,” Elijah said hoarsely. ”Haki and Hagbard, so brave, a true Viking King.” He hadn’t been the eldest but it could possibly have been a tale of his own future. Their kind hadn’t been raiding lands then, merely trying to settle, but still, one day he would have taken his father’s place, with Tatia at his side and his siblings around him. That had all changed on the night Niklaus had given in to his younger brother’s begging. Henrik had been snatched from them then, Niklaus returning with his body bloodied and broken. Now he was …
…Elijah’s doubts had disappeared in a heartbeat and he had drawn the brother he had not lain eyes upon for a thousand years into a fierce hug, almost as though he would be immediately snatched away once more. ”And I you,” Elijah admitted as Henrik stated he had missed him. ”There has been a hole in this family for far too long.” Without Henrik the Mikaelsons had fallen apart, Esther trying to fill that gap with her mistakes, turning her family into monsters, trying to rectify the disaster with more pain and death. Elijah patted his brother’s back before drawing away to see tears mirroring his own in Henrik’s eyes. ”You have an explanation for this?” he asked, knowing it would be far easier with answers than Tatia’s own return had been. Glancing around now, Elijah let his hand rest on his brother’s shoulder. ”We should talk now. There is a lot to tell you of what happened after we … after you were gone.” That was still a hard image to even form into words, that moment that had sent their lives spinning out of control, his brother’s death.

The whole reason why Henrik had arrived in Mystic Falls was because Crowley wanted him to reconnect with his siblings and sway them to join his side in the upcoming fight against Azazel but that didn’t mean that it was going to be easy. A thousand years had passed since Henrik had died and since being brought back he had spent the last eight years believing that everyone he had ever known was dead. To find out that they were alive after all was a lot to take in and while he had wanted nothing more than to reconnect with them he would be the first to admit that he was scared. Such a long time had passed since he died and he still had no idea how his siblings were still alive after all this time but he knew that he needed to find out. Family had always been the most important thing to him and the fact that Elijah still remembered him was enough to make him wonder if perhaps there was something there that could be salvaged after all. He would be the first to admit that he wasn’t the same clueless kid he had been back then but his siblings meant more to him than ever especially after believing that they were dead for so long so if there was any way he could get his family back then he knew that he would take it. As Elijah spoke Henrik felt a smile form on his face. “I always thought of you as Haki, you always looked out for all of us,” he admitted. That was where his nickname for his brother had come from in the first place and now that he was back it only felt right that he started to fall back into that old routine. Henrik had no idea just what pain his death had caused his family but he couldn’t ignore the haunted look in Elijah’s eyes as he looked up at his brother although his attention shifted as Elijah said that he had missed him too. “No longer I hope. I know what it is like to have a hole in your life and I hope that now I will be able to fill it,” he said gently. While it was true that the amount of time he had lived without his siblings paled in comparison to how long they had spent without him he honestly hoped that now they would have the chance to repair the damage that had been caused back then. “I am sorry I caused you so much pain, I never wanted to do that,” he added. His request to see the wolves turn had been completely innocent back then, he had been too young to really think about the consequences of his actions but he had learned a lot over the last eight years and now he knew better so he knew that he was not going to make the same mistakes again. Seeing the tears in his older brother’s eyes was enough to make Henrik realise that his death had had more of an effect on his brother than he had expected but now he wanted to fix that and he would be lying if he said that he wasn’t looking forward to having his brother back. As Elijah asked if he had an explanation for his return, Henrik found himself nodding and he quickly cleared his throat before wiping his own tears away. “I do,” he confirmed. “I agree, we need to talk,” he said as he clapped his brother on the back. “You know the town better than I, is there somewhere we can go where it is safe to talk?”ELIJAH MIKAELSON

There were times when the last thousand years had dragged painfully slow – each year he had spent daggered in his coffin, toted around by his brother like some sick trophy, each decade they had spent running from Mikael feeling like a century. Yet, there were also times, like now, when Elijah almost felt as though he could just reach out a hand and grasp that past they had left behind in these woods all those years before. He’d felt it when he’d spotted Tatia at the side of the road, appearing almost like she’d stepped through some form of time warp on the night they had been turned, just to turn up here all this time later. Then, when he had met this stranger’s gaze that feeling of nostalgia had hit once more. Over the years he had thought of his youngest brother often, every time he had picked up a volume of those tales, his heart aching with the thought of a homeland he had never known outside of the womb, for a brother who had been snatched from them long before his time. Perhaps if he’d been able to watch Henrik grow old and live out his human life it would have been a less painful process to mourn him but in her rashness his mother had damned him to an eternity of hunger, an eternity of grief. Each page of those stories, each mention of the warrior his brother had named him for had been like a splinter to the heart. Now, hearing that name again from his brother Elijah felt those splinters finally begin to withdraw, traces of the poison that had festered in his heart for those centuries leaching out behind them. ”Unfortunately I did not manage to do that enough,” Elijah managed hoarsely, even as he found a smile for his brother. ”We did not get our triumphant ending.” Instead, on the night Niklaus had given in to his pleas, Henrik had been snatched from them all, his death the straw that had broken the camel’s back and destroyed his family.
Would his brother’s return be the one thing to draw them together again now? Given what Niklaus was coming to Mystic Falls to do, Elijah wasn’t sure. The reunion was something that would need to happen, his siblings deserved to have their brother back every bit as much as he did, but he wasn’t sure what effect Henrik’s return would have on them. It had been such a hole in their lives for so long, the grief, the guilt, the pain … Thinking of it now had been enough to make his heart ache as he had hugged his brother. ”No longer,” Elijah echoed, his voice hoarse as he blinked the tears back. ”I hope we can do the same for you. Your family should be around you now, we should come together for this.” A part of him wanted to fill his brother in immediately on the shattered remains of their family but for the moment he held his tongue. Shaking his head, Elijah lifted his hand, squeezed his brother’s shoulder firmly. ”You have nothing to apologise for. You did not go out that night with the intention of … being harmed. It was a child’s curiosity, nothing more.” But it had been enough to cost his brother his life, his mother her sanity, and his brother Niklaus his innocence. Now Elijah knew he would be changing Henrik’s view of all of his siblings. Elijah gave his brother’s shoulder one last squeeze as Henrik clapped him on his back. ”I have rooms here in town. We will not be overheard. Perhaps we will both need a drink to get through this.” Elijah tipped his head back across the square, towards the apartment he had rented. Not as ostentatious as the homes he and his siblings usually garnered for themselves, but it drew less attention, something that would be important while he tried to prepare the town for Niklaus’ arrival.

Henrik had grown up listening to his mother’s warnings about just how dangerous it was to leave the caves during the nights in which the men turned into wolves but the truth was that he had never realised just how right she was. When he was younger it had been a game to start with, he had found ways to amuse himself but as the months and years went on it was a game that he had quickly grown tired of. Like most children as he entered his teenage years his curiosity had grown substantially and he had wanted to see just what it was that he and his family had spent so much time hiding from. The idea of men becoming animals whenever there was a full moon had always intrigued Henrik but at the same time it had always seemed so absurd. For the most part his family had shielded him from all of that and in a way he had a feeling that they had fed his naivety. As he got older he had wanted to see for himself just what went on while the rest of the people in their village fled to the caves and he had asked Niklaus to join him. He knew Elijah never would have agreed, there was no way he would have asked Finn or Rebekah and as for Kol he had thought about asking his brother to join them but in the end he had settled on Niklaus since to Henrik he had seemed the most likely to go along with his request. Back then it had seemed nothing more than an innocent act but he had been blind to just how much pain his actions would end up causing his siblings. He regretted that now and while he knew that he could not make the last thousand years up to them if they had indeed been alive that long he knew that he still would not give up trying to make it up to them. Family had always meant the world to Henrik and now that Elijah had confirmed that there had been a hole in their lives just like there had been in his for the last eight years Henrik was determined to make sure that hole was filled once more. As Elijah said that he did not look after them enough, Henrik shook his head. “You did the best you could Elijah, I was the one who wanted to go and see the wolves turn. Back then I felt that I had to see it happen in order to really believe it but now I know better. What happened was not your fault, it is mine,” Henrik assured him, clapping his brother on the shoulder as he spoke. The guilt of his actions was something that he was going to have to live with for the rest of his life but he knew that the best way he could try and make things right was by at least attempting to bring the family back together once more and see if he could undo at least some of the damage that he had caused back then. Seeing the tears in Elijah’s eyes as he spoke Henrik felt tears sting his own eyes and he cleared his throat before nodding. “Seeing you again is already starting to fill that hole and I am sure that it will be the same with the others. Are they in Mystic Falls?” he asked, not sure whether Elijah was there alone or whether the others were not far behind. “I know you mean that but that childish curiosity caused you all so much pain and that is something that I am going to have to live with,” Henrik shrugged. He knew that it was not going to be easy and he was not sure whether he would even be able to bring his family back together once more but he knew that he had to try, he owed them that much at least after everything that he had put them through. “I think you might be right,” Henrik nodded as he said that they might both need a drink to get through the explaining that they were going to have to do. “After you.”ELIJAH MIKAELSON

Under other circumstances, had his older brother not had so much of his father in them, it might perhaps have been Finn’s place to forever watch over his younger siblings. Elijah had grown up knowing that the eldest brother would be the one to inherit, if there was one amongst them to lead their village, it would be Finn, by the order of birth alone. Yet, so often during their childhood, he had been the one attempting to intercede, to make certain their father did not take his anger towards Niklaus too far. When they had fled after their turning, matters had only grown tenser, the moderating influences in their lives were gone, the man who had kept Niklaus cowed far behind them. It was though the changes that had occurred in the wake of their brother’s death had ripped away who they had once been, or at least unshackled those darker parts of themselves. Would he have taken his father’s place if Henrik had not died that night? Elijah wasn’t sure, could never be now. He hoped he would have become a man unlike his father, one that did not feel it necessary to raise a child by raising a hand to them. Lukas would not have suffered under his hand that way simply because he was another man’s child, it had never been right for a child to suffer for a parent’s sins. Just as it had never been right for a parent to lose a child. Some might have said it was natural, that some would die early, those without the strength or the luck to carry on, but he had seen first-hand the devastation such a death could cause. And now he was experiencing the joy that could return with a rebirth.
The joy and the guilt. Tatia had reassured him the same way just a few short days ago. It had not entirely been his fault that he had taken her life, he had been unable to control the unfamiliar hunger. It had not been his fault that his brother had been killed either. As much as there was to blame Niklaus for, it had not been his fault he had given in to his youngest brother’s whims either. Henrik might have blamed himself too but Elijah knew that the finger of blame could not have been pointed at any of them. They had all been children, almost blind to the danger that had lurked in the woods. Pinching his mouth shut, Elijah shook his head at his brother, one hand coming up to settle on Henrik’s arm for a moment. ”I don’t think any of us can blame ourselves. We were blind to the danger and tragedy from childish curiosity should not be a reason to burden yourself with guilt.” There were far greater reasons out there, things almost as heavy to lament. Taking Tatia’s life had been one of those reasons, allowing his family to fall apart now would be another. He could not deny a reunion, not even when Niklaus was likely heading here hell bent on ritualistic murder. Answering his brother’s question, Elijah shook his head. ”Not yet, but I don’t imagine it will be long before Niklaus finds his way here with the others in tow.” This was not the place to explain to Henrik his older brother’s penchant for placing his siblings in coffins. With that in mind now, Elijah managed a faint smile at Henrik’s words. ”There is much that we have had to grow used to living with,” he explained hoarsely. Some of those things his brother would never hear, other things he would need to know now. At Henrik’s nod, Elijah turned in the direction he had been heading when he had collided with the ghost from his past. He fell into step slowly, hands slipping into the pockets of his coat. ”Have you found somewhere to stay in town?” he asked, half curious, half concerned for his brother’s safety as he led the way across the street towards his own apartment.

Everything had changed so much from the time that Henrik had been born into. Life had seemed so much simpler back then and while it was true that Henrik had not been blind to his father abuse of his older brother Niklaus, he had even suffered at Mikael’s hands on occasion himself when he had done something wrong, it was his father’s treatment of his brother that had caused Henrik to draw even closer to him. He knew that his family had tried to shield him from the worst of it but even though there were times when he hadn’t talked that much he had still watched what was going on around him and that was something that he was pretty sure that his parents and siblings hadn’t counted on. Even as a child he had been perceptive and even though back then the truth about Niklaus’ true parentage had remained a mystery Henrik had still been unable to shake the feeling that there was something different about his brother and he had tried to make sure that he had some memories of good times to go along with the bad memories of the abuse that he had suffered at the hands of their father. Henrik had been close to each of his siblings in their own way with the exception of Finn, the age gap between the two of them being what it was and the fact that Finn had seemed to distance himself from all of them even back then had ensured that the two of them had never been able to truly bond but that was something that Henrik had made his peace with a long time ago. Having his other siblings around had helped, Elijah had always been there to protect him and tell him stories, Niklaus had been the one to encourage his adventurous side, Kol had been his partner in crime and Rebekah had been the one that he had always been able to confide in. Now he had a second chance at life he knew that he wanted to reconnect with each and every one of them for himself rather than just because it was what Crowley had asked of him. It seemed quite fitting that Elijah was the first person in town that he had bumped into and now that the truth was out there it felt like a weight had been lifted off Henrik’s shoulders. Even his brother’s words that none of them were to blame weren’t enough to alleviate the guilt that he felt but they still offered him a little comfort. “I think that is easier said than done,” he admitted. He still didn’t know how his siblings were alive after such a long time nor did he know the truth about what had happened after he died but there was a sinking feeling in the pit of his stomach that told him that there was more to his brother now than there seemed. Crowley needed their support for a reason and Henrik was determined to get to the bottom of what that was. He had already made a promise to himself that nothing was going to happen to his siblings and that was a promise that he intended on sticking to no matter what the cost to himself. “Why is that?” he asked, genuinely curious as to why Elijah didn’t think it would be long before the others made their way to town. Mystic Falls had been built on the land that their village had once stood upon but other than that there didn’t seem to be anything too remarkable about it but he hadn’t been in town for long so he knew that he could quite easily be wrong. As Elijah spoke again Henrik studied him carefully for a moment. “Now you are really going to have to tell me what I have missed,” he said, already starting to feel his curiosity getting the better of him the more cryptic that his brother became. As they began to head in the direction that Elijah had originally been coming from, Henrik shrugged at his brother’s question. “I’ve checked into the motel on the edge of town. It isn’t great but I guess it will do,” he admitted with a shrug. It really was the only option available to him at the moment anyway so he knew that he didn’t really have a choice. ELIJAH MIKAELSON

As a youth Elijah had attempted to protect his brother, to take his role as second eldest seriously. When Mikael had taken out his bitterness on the son they would later learn had not been his, Elijah had yearned to step in, to stay the hand that fell all too often and brutally. As a thousand year older vampire he had found himself doing that in other ways, attempting to stay Niklaus’ hand instead, making apologies to prevent the sort of backlash that could have spurred violent backlashes that would drag in the innocents around them. Time and time again he had negotiated a way out of that violence for his family, for Niklaus, for Kol, even for Rebekah on occasion. Each time he had almost seen himself above them, a human amongst those who had left their humanity aside for monstrosity. Seeing Tatia had taught him a lesson in humility, had ripped the scales from his side to reveal who he had been in those first bloody days after their turning. Elijah had struggled with that image of himself since, had seen blood on his hands a dozen times. Was he any better than Niklaus? Would interceding to protect Elena Gilbert, Katherine and Tatia now somehow even the scales? Somehow he doubted it but Elijah knew he would try, would implore his siblings to help him if he could free them from imprisonment in their coffins. What he was not sure he could was destroy Henrik’s vision of the brother he had adored. There had been a bond between Henrik and each of them, in different ways each of them, barring Finn, being close to the youngest of them. Destroying Henrik’s vision of Niklaus with the truth would be monstrous in a way but Elijah knew he had to if he wanted his brother to walk back into their midst with his eyes wide open.
Niklaus had committed many crimes over the century but being the cause of his brother’s death had not been one of them. Elijah refused to believe even Henrik was to blame. Childhood curiosity had led millions into danger before and safely back out again, unfortunately Henrik’s death had been one of the times when safety had not been possible. Having recently learned of his own greatest crime Elijah had become familiar with self-recrimination, with the weight of guilt that could drive a man to his knees. He knew what his youngest brother must have felt when he had been returned to life and that empathy now drove him to grip his brother’s shoulder, to squeeze it in support. ”The ability to set the blame aside will come with time,” he assured him. ”It may take time but eventually you will feel the feeling ease.” And other emotions would replace it, in a life as long as his he had felt every single one, had cycled through them again and again. Soon his own would cycle back again to all of those tangled up in his family.
Elijah carefully schooled his expression as he looked up at Henrik, not wanting to lie to him but not yet ready to tell him of their troubles of the last thousand years. ”Niklaus was already on his way here,” he explained simply. ”For business. Hearing of your return will only hasten his step.” If that were possible, the news of a doppelganger, of possible freedom would already have set his brother moving at top speed. Knowing that the truth would have to come sooner rather than later, Elijah began to guide his brother towards his lodgings. ”This will be a long conversation,” he confirmed. A thousand years of history was a lot to tell after all. Elijah narrowed his eyes as he walked towards the apartment building that looked out onto the square. ”You should take lodgings closer to the centre of town. I can offer a room if you’re prepared to be under the same roof with your brother once more?” From there he would be able to watch over Henrik, to ensure no trouble took him from them again before a reunion could occur. Pulling his keys from his pocket, Elijah unlocked the building’s front door as he reached it, leading the way up the stairs to a more private space.
