Winter wasn’t used to staying awake through the night like Penny, especially not until 4am. She was on her third cup of coffee, but her eyes were still burning. Damn, she needed her bed. They were looking through artefacts from Japan, which apparently couldn’t wait until the morning. Penny did explain why but most of it went over Winter’s head. She didn’t bother asking Penny to explain it again, knowing she’d be greeted with an eye roll from her boss.
Most twenty one years old would be out partying on a Saturday night, not stuck in a museum. Even if she wasn’t working she wouldn’t be at the club anyway. Instead she’d be tucked up in bed by midnight with a pizza and a trashy Netflix show. Was that shameful? Probably. Winter couldn’t even remember the last time she stayed awake past 1am. After growing up in a household that was a twenty seven party she didn’t take her sleep for granted. It wasn’t uncommon for her to be found curled up asleep in the library at school during lunch time. It was the only peaceful sleep she managed to get, without being woken up by a tweaker screaming.
She found herself staring at the clock, trying to figure out how many hours of sleep she was going to get that night. Maybe Penny spotted it and took pity on Winter by calling it night. Or maybe Penny was eventually getting tired. Either way, Winter practically jumped to her feet, itching to leave the place.
Winter left the building first, walking down the steps, waiting for Penny at the bottom. The hotel was on the way to Penny’s apartment, so it made sense they walked together. The truth was Winter felt a little safer walking with a dragon by her side. “Fuck is this weather?” She said to Penny as the rain started to hammer down harshly. Winter pulled her hood up, silently wishing Penny would hurry up and lock the doors, but her attention drifted from Penny as she spotted something in the sky. “Penny.” She exclaimed loudly, her eyes locked on the figure that came crashing down in front of her, “Penny… there’s a fucking a man on a horse here…” She started to slowly back away from the horse, praying Penny would swoop in and burn the creature alive. Winter watched as he drew a weird looking gun from his pocket, but he pointed it at Penny and pulled the trigger. Her eyes widened with fear Penny vanished. “Hey… I don’t want any trouble… I’m just…” Winter spun around and started to sprint towards the hotel, but the bullet hit her before she made it to the end of the street.
