SLEEPING WITH THE ENEMY WITH CASSIE
Home, if that was what you wanted to call it seemed noticeably quiet as of late. Left to her own devices, Monique spent a great deal of her time convening with the ancestors, letting them lull her into the idea that she was actually going to do it. She would be the witch that led an army against the vampires. But she couldn't do it alone. She needed others. She needed the rest of the Harvest witches to begin with. Which made her wonder just where Cassie had skipped off to.
She went to the most obvious place: the Reid shop. Despite everything she liked the look of the place. Or more accurately she liked the sense of magic it gave off. The Reid family was obviously gifted. So maybe, just maybe they could also be powerful allies in her fight (their fight to be more accurate --- all witches should want to be a part). If she found Cassie here, she would have her put a good word in with the family. The sooner they got this off the ground the better.
This time when she opened the door, she did so with a clearer head. She had to admit that she was glad the ancestors were letting her hold on to her own mind a bit more now a days. The first few days of being back had been a muddle of confusion and overwhelming in all aspects. She was feeling more and more like her old self. Her steps were even lighter.
And sure enough, there was her missing witch.
"I am so glad I didn't call in a missing persons report," she began wryly as she walked up to the counter. Monique leaned forward, her elbows resting on the countertop as she eyed Cassie. "So you're just avoiding me now or did you just forget that I even existed? Either way, I'm wounded, Cassie. I thought we were friends."

━ climb that goddamn mountain ━ CASSIE FLITTED THROUGH THE SHOP, WHICH was basically home (in more ways than one), and dusted the corners everyone ignored, taking inventory as she went. “Olive, can you come here, please? If you just walk through this spot… no, not━Olive!” Linc’s early birthday present (which was super sweet and she totally appreciated it) pranced in the opposite direction as soon as Cassie pointed to the difficult space under a couple of corner shelves. If Olive slipped through (which she’d seen her do a billion times before), she would dust it like a sentient roomba, and then all Cassie had to do was pet her to get the cobwebs off. It was a win-win situation. Y’know, if Olive ever listened.
She wasn’t crazy. She knew cats weren’t all that interested in the whole “owners” thing, but weren’t witches supposed to have a special connection to them? Wasn’t this supposed to be, like, a partnership? Were Familiars a lie?
Maybe Olive was just the worst. Apart from sometimes sleeping on the floor next to Cassie’s cot in the back room, she really didn’t come near Cassie most days. Which sucked. Especially the whole sleeping-on-a-cot thing, but that was better than sleeping next to a girl who might potentially, like, slit Cassie’s throat in her sleep.
Okay, maybe Monique wasn’t that bad… oh, who was she kidding? Monique was seriously scary. And after all that Klaus shit, she didn’t know where she stood. All she knew was that she liked her life here; Nicky was a better teacher than anybody in their coven, and she wasn’t gonna give up Linc just ‘cause her coven (and most witches) said all vampires were bad. They weren’t. The ones who fucked up the Harvest Ritual were bad, but they were connected to Klaus, weren’t they? Soooo, yeah, totally different kind of vamp than, like, Linc and Lawrence. And Linc’s dad. And Hector! Even though he organized that Purge-themed Halloween…. aaaanyway…
She’d gotten used to sleeping on the cot, anyway. She was still young enough that a kink in her neck or back went away by the end of the day. Plus, she’d just bought a fancy, new shredded memory foam pillow, and that was doing wonders. And she was never late to opening the shop!
Humming on her way back to the counter, Cassie stuck her tongue out at Olive (who turned and showed Cassie her butt), then jotted down the numbers of old plates they had. Basically, a bajillion.
She rounded the counter finally, moving behind it to find her phone. She was already grinning like an idiot by the time she opened it, ‘cause the lock screen showed a new text from Linc. It wasn’t even anything crazy, he was just cute, and she loved texting him throughout the day. She was gonna see if he had any time before his shift, and then they were probs gonna meet for lunch. So cuuute.
The bell to the store dinged, and Cassie quickly put her phone down, beaming a giant smile at the incoming person. It was more than just her regular customer service smile, ‘cause it was fuelled by Linc being a cutie pie, but it died when she realized who was walking it.
Cassie frowned, staying frozen where she was, with a small space between her and the counter. She wanted to move back as Monique leaned onto it (also, what the hell, she’d just Windexed that), but that seemed like a sign of weakness, so she stayed put. Which, y’know, was probs also weak-seeming, ‘cause why the hell couldn’t she move?
“We were friends.” Emphasis on the “were.” She’d managed to forget about Monique for a whole day once, and Cassie figured that was progress. She wasn’t so worried about Monique realizing she was pulling away anymore, ‘cause she’d been spending less and less time at the motel (if she did sleep there, then she slipped out before anyone else got up), and nobody seemed to notice. Which, y’know, kinda hurt, ‘cause she was always the “invisible” friend before, and it sucked to be that again. But she wasn’t invisible to Linc. Or Nicky. So why the hell should she care about Monique?!
Well… ‘cause they used to be best friends.
“Did you forget I existed? ‘Cause I’ve been taking more shifts here for a while, and after that time Klaus came in… you know he actually did take my boss’s sister?” Her frown deepened, and she puffed out a breath, remembering how awful stuff was back then. “Where’s all that stuff the ancestors promised, huh? You said you weren’t gonna get a job ‘cause they could get you money or whatever. Well, why are the three of us still squatting in a motel room made for two people? Why aren’t we allowed to do anything after Klaus took her? Have you been comin’ up with some grand plan, or are you just sitting on your ass?” Cassie was actually making something with her life, working under another witch and learning about magic every day. Finding a partner. All the stuff she wanted to. This was more like home than their coven ever was.

SLEEPING WITH THE ENEMY WITH CASSIE
Cassie remained one of the most high strung persons Monique had ever come across. She tried to remember if she had been like this before the ritual but honestly, her brain was a fog when it came to those times. She could see bits and pieces of her childhood, her teen years, the pride in her mother's face when it came to her involvement with the Harvest. But it all seemed so dreamlike --- as if it had never really been real and Monique did not exist before now, with a mind that was no longer really her own.
"So that is how it is? We aren't friends anymore, Cassie. That actually hurts. I guess the bonds of sisterhood can only survive so much, huh?" Her voice was accusatory. She should have seen this coming. The others couldn't understand what she was going through. Not really. The ancestors hadn't gifted them the same way they had her. They had chosen her of the four to carry on and that was a burden that Cassie wasn't going to wrap her hands around. She was too busy acting as if things were completely normal and life was just going to proceed as it had before all of this happened.
That was not what the ancestors were telling her.
Monique's jaw tightened as Cassie unloaded on her. She stood still for a moment, willing her anger to pass. She wasn't entirely sure what would happen if she didn't and worried that it would turn into something it didn't need to be. She was her to see her so called friend, not fight. But if it was a fight that Cassie was spoiling for, Monique could certainly play along. It might help her get out some of her pent up anger.
"You want a mansion? I'll get us a mansion. I will get you any creature comfort you think you need, Cassie. Not that material wealth actually matters in the long run," she commented, her voice harsh. She could fill the air around her vibrate just a little. A sure sign that her magic was no longer just lying dormant. She would never use it on a sister, even if she was furious. "You think the ancestors are just going to rid the world of creatures like Klaus? It's not that simple and you know it. You know that beasts like him cannot just be killed. I will ask them what their plan is but I can't just demand things of them. That's now how any of this works, Cassie."

━ climb that goddamn mountain ━ GOD, MONIQUE WAS SO FREAKING ANNOYING. Cassie couldn’t believe they’d actually been best friends once upon a time. Actually, maybe they never had, ‘cause Cassie was just the quiet one in the corner, right? She just went along with what the other girls said like she couldn’t think for herself. Maybe that’s who Monique wanted back.
Well, tough, ‘cause dying didn’t just change Monique. Cassie promised herself she was never gonna be like that again.
When she finally told Monique what she really thought, all her “friend” could offer was sarcasm and more empty fucking promises. “You literally said that last time. Just do something instead of saying you will. ‘Cause I don’t believe you.” She shook her head, angry and irritated that bullshit kept spilling from Monique’s lips and yet she still seemed to believe herself. It was actually kinda crazy.
“Nobody said anything about killing him.” She scoffed, “I just think we should be able to fight back since he came after a fellow witch, but you wanna wait for the ancestors to talk to you about it, and yet it doesn’t seem like they are? Or like anything is happening at all?” Cassie narrowed her eyes, then shook her head. “I don’t wanna kill all vampires. Some of them aren’t even half bad…” Especially Linc. “... And I know there’s gotta be a balance or whatever. Also, like, you can’t demand stuff? So how are you gonna get a mansion and all the other shit you promised?” Cassie smirked smugly, like she’d just caught Monique in her own lie, and leaned into the counter, crossing her arms over her chest. “Just be real, Monique. Like, seriously. Why don’t you ever tell the truth? Maybe we could still be friends if you weren’t like that.”
