━ i don't know where i'm going, but i sure know where i've been ━ July 1st ROXXI HAD BEEN PREPPING ALL WEEK FOR THIS, WAITING FOR gifts to arrive in the mail and plotting the best way to execute her plan. Things hadn’t been perfect lately, but they were getting better━the thing at the club could be called a minor bump (like the ones on Chase’s face from her). It’d been repaired by the morning, and they talked it through about as much as they could. It was irritating that Chase “didn’t remember” it, but his reassurances made her feel better. They had no reason to distrust one another.
Anyway, it didn’t matter. The weather was warmer, she had less classes over the summer, and everything was just generally better. And it was his birthday.
She didn’t enlist outside help to prep (unlike him), nor did she have to try to beg for him to take the day off━it was Saturday, and, yeah, sure, crime didn’t stop on the weekends, but her boyfriend would if she had anything to say about it.
If it was up to Roxxi, she’d say they could lounge around naked all day. She’d ask (and pay, if necessary) Mikey to stay out of the apartment until Sunday, and just relax━but it wasn’t her birthday. And Chase might’ve been a man, but he was still a big teddy bear, and she wanted to make sure he felt special. They could have constant sex any other day of the year.
She thought about tricking him, too, but decided he would wanna be comfortable for his birthday. Roxxi would feel so bad if he was stuck in an itchy button-up the whole night.
She’d called him to wish him a happy birthday in the morning, and reminded him he had to keep his evening open. Roxxi would be there at seven to pick him up, and that he better wear something soft and comfy. He had all day to do something with Mikey if he wanted, but, after that, he was hers.
Roxxi arrived and texted Chase that she was out front, then slipped out of the Mustang, holding her keys in one hand and the plain, dark blue gift bag in the other. She leaned against the passenger side, facing the building, wearing a t-shirt crop top and a pair of Chase’s sweatpants she’d commandeered. She looked like she was ready to sleep at any moment, which was kind of the point.
“Hey!” Roxxi beamed when she saw him, meeting him halfway and throwing her arms around him. “Happy Birthday!” She leaned away just far enough to start smooching all over his face, making sure to cover his cheeks, forehead, eyebrows, nose, and, finally, his lips. “My American Boy, born on Canada Day,” Roxxi hummed, hugging him again, pecking the side of his jaw. “We’ll make sure we don’t make our babies in October, hm?” She teased, though she hoped it was a lot sooner than that.
“C’mon, we have reservations.” She raised her brows expectantly, like she was chastising him, and pulled back to raise her hand to him, showing Chase her palm━and the keys. “First gift; you can drive us.” It was sort of emasculating to be driven around in your girlfriend’s muscle car, wasn’t it? Roxxi didn’t hand her keys over to just anyone, and she hadn’t offered any other time, but this was a special occasion. “Go crazy. Drive it like a boy, I’ll put the directions in.” And it wasn’t so short of a drive that he couldn’t have fun.
“Gift number two. You can open it in the car,” She smiled, handing over the gift bag. She kissed him again before climbing into the passenger’s seat, trying desperately not to start freaking out at the idea of someone else driving her baby. This was fine; it was fine━just one night. She’d survive.
Roxxi turned in her seat to face him, giving Chase a happy little grin as she thumbed the address into her phone. She stuck it in the cup holder so it could bark orders at him as he drove, giving Chase about twenty minutes to have all the fun he liked. And in the gift bag was an accessory for his car, a Captain America sunshade. “That’s for yours, not mine, just so we’re clear.” She laughed softly, watching his face to see if all those dark features would brighten just for her the way she loved.

July 1st Their card had dropped through the door that morning. A pale blue envelope, addressed in his mom’s neat handwriting. Happy birthday son. We love you. Chase had slipped it into the drawer of his nightstand before Mikey had gotten out of the shower. He’d done the same last year too, not adding it to the scatter of them that clustered on the entertainment unit in the living room until there were others there, like he had to disguise his parents’ meagre presence in their lives. Love sent from New Orleans, but not enough of it for them to actually make the effort to come and see their sons. There’d been more of it in the stack of pancakes that’d come out of the kitchen at the diner with a scatter of candles threatening to drip wax onto the whipped cream – not enough to incinerate the stack, but definitely enough to have his face glowing. Man, it’d beat those years of happy birthdays exchanged over the phone, or if he was really fucking lucky, that coincided with visiting days. The guards would’ve lost their shit if he’d pulled out a lighter to start sparking up candles, that was if they’d even allowed a cake in without some jackoff smashing the thing to bits to make sure he wasn’t trying to sneak in a file or a fucking shiv. He’d hung out for an hour after, working through the stack of maple syrup and strawberries, and what had to have been an entire pot of coffee – sharing those brief moments with his brother before Kace had kicked him lose. Like he’d have said no to his brother getting to play a little hooky for the rest of the afternoon. There’d been a temptation to run the guy after he’d hired Mikey on, but in the end he’d decided not to, Chase knew that it would just been a sign that he hadn’t believed that Mikey’d got the job on his own merit. Not everything in their lives was tied into the Agnellis and that choke chain they’d tried to keep around his brother’s neck. That wasn’t to say he hadn’t kept watch for Nemo as he’d sprawled on the porch at Campbell’s, basking in the sunlight and that warmth that came from him and his big brother getting to live the lives they always shoulda been able to. Bottles and glasses ticked off the hours towards the evening and the plans Roxxi had barely sketched out for him when she’d called that morning. Before he’d found the card, before he’d even crawled out from under the sheets. Warmth in that early morning rumble of their voices and in his belly as he eventually wobbled to his feet. ”You’re gonna have to carry me home,” he snorted at Mikey. Bullshit, of course, but he’d slung an arm around his brother’s shoulders as he’d ambled down off of the porch and headed towards the apartment. Roxxi would’ve killed him if the alcohol had bitten any harder – hallelujah to the pancakes, and the cool shower he’d taken when they’d gotten back. It took the edge off, had him soft, but not sloppy drunk as he grinned at himself in the mirror. Like the face that stared back at him, they’d taken their lumps at time, they’d come through it though. Those ridges and road blocks smoothing out to a path they’d be on together from here on out. His hair was still damp as he headed out to the living room. Five to seven, which meant that Roxxi would … there. Chase smirked as he shot a message back that he’d be right down. He aimed it at Mikey as he looked back up. ”I don’t know what time we’ll be back. Don’t stay up too late, aight?” Chuckling, he bumped his fist into his brother’s shoulder and headed out. The soft warmth grew as he pushed out the front door of the building to find Roxxi leaning against the side of her car outside, a gift bag dangling from her hand. A sliver of skin showed between the hem of her cropped t-shirt and … ”I wondered where they’d gone,” he grumbled, approaching with a little swagger. He caught her as she threw herself at him, his arms slithering around her waist to balance her as she peppered him with kisses. Had she missed a single inch of his face? Nah. Chase smiled into the kiss she pressed against his lips. ”Hey. Thanks, baby.” One dark brow rose, with the corners of his mouth. ”Avoiding Independence Day?” Their babies. If the warmth wasn’t already there, turning his heart maple syrup soft and sweet, then that would’ve done it. That future that was back on track talked about so easy that it was almost like he could reach out and hold it in his hands. ”For dinner? I’d have said I woulda dressed up, but this … this ain’t French kwee-siine dressy. I like it though.” Chase dragged his hand around the bare skin of Roxxi’s side before he plucked the keys out of her palm. His eyes glinted as he looked past Roxxi to her car – the same sorta car he’d practically dreamed about as a kid. An engine that could purr just like its owner. ”I love it,” he told her, the grin only growing with her the instructions she gave him. ”I shoulda put the siren on it … what speed limit…” The badge that always lived on him would do the same job if Mystic Falls’ finest tried slowing him down. This really was the magical mystery tour for his birthday. Chase went to round the car, but Roxxi wasn’t done. The bag was passed over with another kiss. He resisted the urge to peek before he was rounding the car and slipping into the driver’s seat with a little groan of pleasure. Beaming at her, he gave a little wriggle in the seat, like he was working his way into it. The belt went on, then as Roxxi started thumbing in the address of where they were going he was nosing into the bag. He lifted the gift out, the plastic that contained it crinkling as he rotated it to see what it was. ”You sure?” Chase crooned. Captain Freaking America, hell yeah. ”Nah, actually, you’re more the Black Widow type. A kick ass woman with a ton of heart. I love it, thank you!” Depositing it in the back of the seat, he turned back to her, lit up as bright as the candles on the pancakes that morning to press his gratitude to her lips, his thumb and fingers catching her chin to hold her there for a moment before he settled back. The car purred just like he’d thought it would as he started the engine up. Trying not to give Roxxi a heart attack he eased out, waiting until he was out of the square before he really started to open the engine up. Oh yeah. He was practically humming like the engine was by the time he was following the directions onto the less busy roads – aka the ones the deputies weren’t gonna be patrolling. ”How many parts are there to tonight? Two gifts already, a magical mystery tour …” Wherever they were going that was comfortable enough to go without choking himself up with a tie. Chase settled his hand on Roxxi’s thigh, his fingertips light on her inner thigh, his thumb stroking a line up the outside.

━ i don't know where i'm going, but i sure know where i've been ━ PFFT, WHERE THEY’D GONE? TO THEIR NEW HOME, OBVIOUSLY. But Roxxi wasn’t gonna say too much about it. She just grinned and kissed him, happy to be greeting Chase after another long day.
She tried to throw him off with the word ‘reservations,’ and barked out a laugh as he made cuisine sound so… wrong. “I bet you do,” Roxxi hummed into his lips, her fingertips circling his own soft t-shirt and tugging lightly━it’d been the uniform for tonight━something comfy━and he’d followed her directions perfectly. “Reservations for something. You’ll see.” And he wasn’t getting any more hints.
His excitement made the nerves ease a little as she handed over her keys, scoffing as she slipped into the passenger seat after handing over his second gift. Roxxi glanced sideways as Chase wiggled into her leather━which had been perfectly moulded to her ass, thank you━and raised a brow, though she smirked and continued putting in the directions. Once the phone was away, she could focus on Chase as he opened his gift, beaming just as she’d hoped he would. Roxxi smiled so big her cheeks started to hurt, and she laughed again as he towed her in for a kiss.
“Black Widows kill their mates, no?” She raised a brow at the comparison, only half-joking, as she figured it was some comic reference she didn’t understand. Even while she’d researched his gifts, she’d typed in, “American guy with shield” and, thankfully, got her answer. Captain America. Everything was easier once she had that.
Roxxi smiled as he lingered there, their foreheads together, her dark eyes flicking up to find his. “Of course, cucciolo. I’m glad you like it.” And if he loved that, he might transform into a puddle at his next gift.
Soon enough, they were heading to the small building outside of Mystic Falls, with Chase quickly slipping into a higher gear to really have them soaring out of here. “There are as many parts as I say there are.” She said in her Teacher Voice, and laid her hand over Chase’s, giving him a squeeze before lifting and depositing it onto the gear shift. “Eyes on the road, mister.” And on the RPMs; he’d have to shift soon if he wanted to go any faster, and he couldn’t do that with his hand on her thigh.
Roxxi grinned at Chase for a moment before watching the road herself━and the dash━while gritting her teeth to keep herself from side-seat driving.
Eventually, they made it there alright, and pulled into the tiny movie theatre’s equally-small parking lot. Her baby had survived (and so had she), and Chase looked like he’d had the time of his life. So, ultimately, all her stress was for nothing… there was, however, always the way back.
Roxxi held Chase’s hand as they walked in, not offering information (or answering any questions he might’ve had), only grinning mischievously. “We’ll have our snacks inside.” She said as they approached the counter, smiling at the one teenager at the register. There was another flitting around in the back, gathering popcorn and drinks, and only two other couples waiting on the other end. “Hi, I booked a theatre… Roxana Braschi?” She said, and the girl’s face lit up instantly. She looked from Roxxi to Chase, then back again, and suddenly her mundane shift had been turned around. She nodded wildly, and leaned forward to point down the hall.
“Oh, yes, yup! It’s right down there on the left, theatre four. We’ll bring everything to you in a few minutes!” She practically squealed, and Roxxi thanked her and led them away, beaming sideways at Chase, the girl’s mood having rubbed off on her. She was already eagerly anticipating this, but it was reinvigorating to see someone else get so worked up over it, too━and she was sure it only built up Chase’s curiosity. “She was almost more excited than you are,” Roxxi laughed, guiding him into the empty theatre, where only old, drive-in style advertisements played quietly and in black and white.
Smack dab in the middle of the auditorium were two seats in particular that’d been pre-reclined and covered with blankets and pillows, like a little nest just for them. Roxxi settled into the leather recliners, shifting a pillow to her lower back, and moving any that ended up between them. She immediately snuggled into Chase’s side.
“So…” She began finally, her gaze moving from the dancing hot dogs on the screen to their intertwined hands, then up to Chase’s own dark eyes. “One of the boys in my regular class━the one who… started the entire issue,” She didn’t want to dwell on it or hardly even mention it. It wasn’t the point, and she didn’t want Chase to get distracted. “His father is a producer for that comic-book-turned-movie company you like.” Roxxi explained, trying to keep her voice level, as if there wasn’t anything to get excited about. She paused then (mostly for dramatic effect) as that same girl from behind the counter came in with a tray of food, carefully climbing the stairs to get to them.
Roxxi had pre-ordered drinks, giant burgers, popcorn and Chase’s favourite snacks, all of which the girl began to deposit on their dedicated side tables. “Thank you,” Roxxi smiled, and the girl practically bounced as she said,
“No problem! Enjoy! And Happy Birthday!” Before disappearing again.
She started to unwrap her burger before continuing, purposefully dragging it out, which was made obvious by the little smirk on her face. “Anyway, obviously, he didn’t want anything to happen to his darling child, but I don’t have any interest in those things. Of course, I know somebody who does…”
The lights began to dim, and the dancing snacks faded from the screen, switched out by a black screen with white writing:
THIS FILM IS THE PROPERTY OF MARVEL ENTERTAINMENT, LLC, A SUBSIDIARY OF THE WALT DISNEY COMPANY. DUPLICATION OF ANY KIND IS STRICTLY PROHIBITED.
“And I rented out a theatre so you could see it on the big screen. I believe you have to fill out something after the movie to say if you liked it, but, otherwise, I hope you like this Red Guy. Apparently, everyone can’t wait for this movie, or so I’m told.”
YOU ARE NOT PERMITTED TO DISCUSS OR DISCLOSE ANY INFORMATION IN THIS VIDEO. BY WATCHING, YOU ARE AGREEING TO…
Finally, after a lengthy legal statement, the white text was replaced for the last time.
TEST SCREENING FOR DEADPOOL 3
Roxxi watched Chase instead of the screen as the opening began, grinning, trying to assess whether she’d made the right call.

July 1st Secrets had taken on a sour note the second Mikey had started to keep them from their parents. They were the poisonous sort, the kind that left his brother coming home bleeding and him lying to their parents about it. Before then he’d been the kid racing down the stairs on Christmas morning, Mikey trailing along behind him with far less overt enthusiasm. He loved the surprise of whatever Santa had managed to buy – not that it had ever been that much. It had been more about the not knowing than how much his parents had managed to scrape together to get what they could from the long ass list he’d written up. He’d have said times changed, but there were still some secrets that’d left him feeling sick when they were revealed. Not that they should’ve remained in the closet – that would’ve been worse when they were finally revealed – but things that had taken a toll when he’d come to know them. This was different Chase had told himself when Roxxi had started putting the plan in motion. This was the good kind, the sorta thing that was gonna start putting a silver lining on those dark clouds. Roxxi’s smile, that hum against his lips as she kissed him, the sun that might chase them away entirely. ”Not even a hint, huh?” Chase clucked his tongue. He’d have been a shitty detective if he wasn’t already piecing the clues together as the keys appeared. Dressing down, the car, what looked like a trip out of town. This had all the hallmarks of something more like their first official date – the stuffy and elegant set aside for something more them. The top button popped, burger grease licked from his thumb as he watched Roxxi pack away the burgers and fries, marvelling at where it possibly coulda gone – he’d learned eventually just how she burned it off and, hell, he was glad to help do it. He was getting the gift, but it was the grin on Roxxi’s face as he opened it that had him smiling all the harder. Pressing it to her lips, Chase knew that the lady had started to protest too much. It might’ve been the Beauty and the Geek to start with, but she’d absorbed something to go buying him Captain America merch. ”Not that one,” he told her, knowing that she’d push the information out of her head five minutes later. ”Nat’s gone to the good side, she kills the bad guys.” And slept her way through the superhero community. Chase bit back a wince at that, he wasn’t gonna dig through that aspect of Nat’s personality. It didn’t have to be a perfect fit. ”Love it,” Chase corrected her. ”Love you.” She wouldn’t love him anymore if he ran them off the road or popped a tire – Roxxi would kill him then - but there was something seriously hot in the sound. ”Yes ma’am.” He’d have popped a salute at her, but he was already doing as she’d asked. Focussing, shifting gears (with far less trouble than he’d thought he might given how long it’d been since he’d driven stick), feeling the thrum of the engine in his chest as they flew out of Mystic Falls. Chase was sure he could still feel it in his legs when he eventually climbed out of the driver’s seat outside a movie theatre. Dark eyes narrowed, his tongue caught between his teeth as he let Roxxi guide him inside. There was a movie theatre in Mystic Falls, they coulda gone there without the added drive – not that he was gonna complain about getting behind the wheel and seeing just what Roxxi’s car could do. ”Thinkin’ with your stomach first, huh?” he asked, chuckling lightly. As though it had ever been any different when the living room had been their theatre. ”A theatre…” Surely she’d meant tickets, but the girl behind the counter was already lighting up at the words, like she was about to pop. ”Hiii,” Chase drawled, drawing the word out as his brows began to draw together and he glanced at Roxxi. Glancing back at her as Roxxi towed him away, he snorted faintly. This was getting more mysterious by the minute, the surprise building, layers added instead of being peeled away from a gift. ”Well, she knows what’s happenin’, I don’t, yet …” He was wracking his brain, trying to remember what’d been released lately. It wasn’t like he’d had much time for it, not even for that mind numbing slump on the sofa, curled up with Roxxi to catch whatever’d popped up on Netflix. Whistling low at the dressed auditorium, the one obviously just made for two tonight, Chase tugged Roxxi towards the centre. ”You weren’t jokin’ about the whole ‘booked a theatre’ thing, huh?” The words were murmured against the side of her head as they settled and Roxxi curled into him. Ha! There it was. The explanation, finally. It was like she’d been waiting for the curtain to go up – not that it had yet – before the next part of the surprise started getting unwrapped. Chase stiffened faintly at the weight on the started. It shouldn’t have been the boy who was making up for any of it, the girl who’d leaked the video should’ve – getting kicked from school should’ve been the least of it. He tried to push the frown away before it started creasing his brow, concentrating on the rest of the story. ”Marvel. He works for M-marvel?” Just the M word was enough to have him starting to geek out. Maybe it was DC, but ya know, he’d take that too today. The last handful of years, it’d been rare for him to be able to get the time away to watch them on premier night. Some of the guys from the comic book store would drag him along when they could, but on a couple of occasions he’d missed out, having to wait for stuff to start streaming and that’d been fucking brutal. Closing his mouth before the girl from behind the counter thought he was touched, Chase just beamed at her as she appeared with the food. He hadn’t been wrong about this being like that first date – burgers, it had to be burgers, buttered popcorn, peanut M&Ms, enough other stuff that he was gonna be zooming out of here on a double sugar rush afterwards. ”Thank you,” Chase chirped at her, about to start bouncing out of his seat, like he was that eight year old again, rushing down on his birthday to find a bike, his own freaking bike waiting in the middle of the room. A handful of popcorn was halfway to his mouth before Roxxi dropped his bomb and he was scrambling, dropping it back into the bucket as he laughed. ”Wait, you blackmailed his dad? You know you’re not meant to confess crimes to cops right?” Oooooh. Had he squealed? Maybe, there was definitely some kinda high breathless sound out of him as the warning appeared on screen. Marvel. It was fucking Marvel. ”They want my opinion on … fuckin’ Deadpool? You talked them into letting see a preview of Deadpool?” Can’t wait for the movie was an understatement. The first two Deadpools had been fucking glorious, Ryan Reynolds finally playing Deadpool as he shoulda done at the start. Oh and she was so hearing about that when they got out of here. Abandoning the popcorn altogether as the screen went from black to the first scene, Chase clutched at Roxxi’s arm. His eyes glittered with the tears he absolutely wasn’t fucking ashamed to shed when she’d done this for him knowing that he’d explode getting this sort of a surprise. This was better than a necklace, better than him blackmailing – huh, that was where she’d got it – Carnegie into making one hell of a dinner for him. This was the Holy Grail!By the time of it, Chase was puffing out a breath, like it was the first one he’d exhaled since the movie had started. The big red guy hadn’t disappointed, it’d been … He had to force his mouth shut as the credits finished rolling away – the second end credits scene having vanished seconds before. Fingers that were definitely more buttery now, sliding down to Roxxi’s hand, drawing her in until he was grinning right against her lips again. ”You’re a miracle worker. You know that? You pulled off the impossible and, God, I didn’t think I could love you more, but I definitely do now.” The kiss was full of it, sweet and tangy from the sodas, the burgers. ”You got any more dirt on this kid? You know the new Captain America’s on the schedule for right after this. I’d turn a blind eye to the blackmail for some more Cap.” He’d have given everything for Roxxi before, now it was more – like ready to sell his soul for her. The night wasn’t done either. Chase bit back a wince. He wasn’t a greedy guy, he’d already had more than he ever could’ve expected, but she couldn’t blame a guy for thinking it after this.

━ i don't know where i'm going, but i sure know where i've been ━ SHE REALLY COULDN’T ANSWER THAT QUESTION, AND NOT JUST because she wanted to keep it a surprise. She actually had no idea what the fucking movie company was called; she only knew that they made the billions of movies that Chase liked. And yes, she did mean billions. Roxxi couldn’t count how many fucking times they’d gone to a theatre to see some action-filled movie that made no sense to her, or curled up on his couch just to be roped into something on Disney-plus. Something that wasn’t a classic princess movie, mind you. She’d never been very into them, but at least they had some history behind them. They were… old. Which was what she was going to be after another one of these three-fucking-hour movies.
But… it was his birthday. And she loved him. And no, it was not blackmail. “It wasn’t blackmail,” Roxxi puffed, “He offered. Rich Dad was just lucky that I love you, a giant geek.” She smiled, waiting for the title to finally come up. Once it did, and she heard Chase’s little squeal, she knew she’d done a good thing. The best birthday of all time, perhaps? Yeah, she’d take that crown.
“Yes, that. Deadpool.” The Red Guy was the best she could come up with. Roxxi’s eyes watched Chase’s as they got all misty and he clutched her arm like he was going to fall off his seat. He was so adorable, and she loved making him happy, not only because he’d had so much turmoil in his life (that her family caused), but because she simply loved him. Forgetting all that other shit━their pasts, and whatever else━she loved Chase more than anyone, and she would never stop loving him. This was forever.
Which, unfortunately, meant a lifetime of these weird movies.
By the time it was over, Roxxi had eaten her way through her burger and a third of the snacks, and was laying back diagonally, her legs outstretched, facing away from Chase, while her top half was propped up against him. It was the only way to keep her semi-conscious. One hand rubbed her stomach like there was anywhere to really put her food, or that her belly had expanded much more than its already-flat plane. Okay, she was severely bloated, and in pain, but it was worth it to see Chase looking like a kid on Christmas. The stomachache would pass in a moment… thank God she couldn’t get heartburn. Chase was fucked in a birthday or two from now, though.
Roxxi smiled as he kissed her, squeezing his hand softly. “You better.” She snickered, planting two quick pecks on his lips. “Captain America?” Roxxi asked, pulling back to quirk a brow at him. “Didn’t he die in that other one?” Hey, look at her, she’d retained some of it. “Or do you mean the black guy? The Hawk? The Eagle? Whatever his name is.” She waved her other hand in the air like it didn’t matter (it didn’t), though she did recall him in that awful show with the metal-arm guy. She hadn’t recognized him at first with the haircut, and couldn’t understand any of the TV show until Chase filled her in (halfway through) about who he was. Well, that was when she bothered to listen, but still.
In any case, she was going to make a joke about Chase setting up a camera in his bedroom if he really wanted to get more dirt on this kid, but it was still a little too raw. And it was his birthday, she’d already mentioned it enough.
“Come on, pack up the snacks━I have one more surprise for you.” She smiled, planting another kiss on his lips before she leaned forward to collect what was left of their food. Roxxi folded the blankets once they were done, and took Chase’s hand to lead him back to her car, thanking the concession girl on their way out.
She supposed it was her own fault━what else was Chase going to do on the way home except talk about the movie? After she’d told him to drive to her house, it was like he was a toy that’d just been wound up and let loose. Holy fuck, she didn’t think she’d ever known more about one character’s history in her entire life. No, that was a lie, maybe the rant about Captain America was longer. Whatever, she didn’t really let any of it take up space in her brain, just nodded and smiled, asked questions when she genuinely needed to, and then let it all float out the opposite ear. Her main goal was achieved, and that was all that mattered to her━Chase’s happiness.
“Oh, remind me, we have to fill out those forms in the morning.” Truthfully, they should’ve done it directly after, but they weren’t going to spoil the rest of his birthday.
Her stomach didn’t hurt so bad by the time they parked at her building and, once they were through the door, she didn’t notice it at all━not over her nerves, anyway. This could go one of two ways, and she’d designed the surprise so it would be good either way, but it didn’t mean she was any less anxious for either outcome.
“I have ice cream cake in the freezer,” She hummed as she left her shoes by the door, one hand still in Chase’s, though she didn’t stop in the kitchen. She could definitely eat a piece of cake, but she was too focused on the next thing. Roxxi dropped the snacks at the table and kept walking, “That isn’t your surprise, though.”
Releasing his hand just outside her bathroom, she went in by herself and dug through the cabinet, then came out holding a box of pregnancy tests with a bow stuck on the top. She smiled, full of hope and nervousness. “I thought… I could take one tonight. And either it’s positive, and we have something else to celebrate, or it isn’t, and then we can try to make sure it will be next time. It’s a win-win.” Roxxi’s grin turned devilish as she shook the box at him, trying to ensure the disappointment could still be a good thing.
Eventually, she went back in, not bothering to shut the door as she took it. Roxxi set the cap back on it, and set the test down carefully on the counter, almost as though it were a live bomb. She washed her hands and smiled bashfully at Chase. “What do you think?” She hummed, shutting off the sink and drying her hands. “A boy first, or a girl?” Surely, they’d have more than one after━that was a given. In any case, Roxxi didn’t think she’d be unhappy with either, but━one way or the other━the pressure of her family’s lineage would rest on them. Would they get an Aronne, the good, like her dad, Angelo? Or a Giobbe━Emiliano? And if they were destined to have one of each, then which would be first?
Apparently, it didn’t matter quite yet. Roxxi felt her heart sink as she picked up the test (once it had finished marinating) and looked at it with Chase, sadness pulling down her features. Maybe it was better this way; maybe they weren’t ready yet. It wasn’t as if they were really trying; they weren’t on a schedule, and they━well, he━didn’t always finish in the same spot. She’d sort of been hoping that removing her IUD and being lackadaisical about it would have them ending up with a child. Apparently, she was wrong.
But this was why she’d created a backup plan.
Roxxi turned to Chase and sniffled, tears in her eyes despite her smile. She wrapped her arms around his shoulders and kissed his cheek, sighing quietly into him. “Well, maybe it’s a sign,” She said lightly after a moment, leaning back to look into his eyes, grinning again. “A sign that you’re supposed to marry me first. You know, God looking after his Good Catholic Girls and all,” She snickered, the end of it breaking off as she kissed him passionately, determined to have his birthday end on a good note.

July 1st Liking faces as wrecked as his (and not bolting when the damage had only gotten worse bit by bit), had just been the first thing on the epic list of reasons why he loved Roxxi. She put up with more shit than most would have, not pushing him away at the first sign of trouble stamped in his skin in purple and black. She hadn’t walked away after all that stuff with Mikey (the details were gonna remained wrapped up in a thousand layers of don’t matter in the back of his head) or run from him when he’d tried to hold things together for her after her past had come back to try and do just as much damage. Oh yeah, and she’d sit through every damn movie he fanboyed over. She’d resort to blackmail for him. Hands clutching at her arm, Chase beamed at her. She could say Rich Dad offered all she wanted, but the guy had laid a bet on the fact that there’d be someone in her life who’d swoon hard enough for the Red Guy that she’d give in on the grades. A boyfriend, a girlfriend, kids who woulda ended up puking half the night from that potent mix of candy and excitement. Maybe one of them was still gonna by the time the movie was done. They’d shifted as the movie had spun out, Roxxi ending up sprawled across the pillows and him, his arm wrapped around her shoulders, his smile pressed to the top of her head before the spell broke and he was babbling his gratitude and love at her. ”I love you enough to practically burst with it,” he told her, the smile lingering through those pecking kisses before he groaned and shook his head. ”Not dead, naw. He went back for his lady … spent decades with her instead. The way I see it, Cap’s still out there, just trundlin’ around with a walker.” After decades with the woman he loved he didn’t imagine Cap was regretting that shit too much. Still clucking his tongue, but stretching out his lecture on the films she’d obviously not retained everything from, Chase grinned. ”Yes ma’am,” he murmured, cupping her cheek for just a moment as she kissed him again before Roxxi was getting up, packing up. ”It’s the Falcon … and the Winter Soldier. Bucky Barnes, you know the guy with the metal arm…” Breaking it down into simpler terms wasn’t gonna do anything but have Roxxi rolling her eyes. The concession girl got a beaming smile – yeah, she’d known exactly what kinda reaction she was gonna get. Nobody – alright, nobody except Roxxi – saw a Marvel ASAP because it looked like something vaguely fun to do on a Friday night. They went to see a movie they were so excited for that they were practically bouncing in their seats, they dissected it afterwards, talking it through for hours with other fans. Chase almost apologise, but hell, Roxxi had opened herself right up for it. The entire way back he’d split his attention between the road, the speedometer and babbling about the film. By the time they were approaching her apartment building and Roxxi was reminding him about the forms, it was a wonder she hadn’t dozed off. ”Already got it all written up here,” Chase told her, tapping a finger against his temple. Hell, if they wanted really glowing reviews he could fill hers out too. There was enough he had to say about it to definitely fill in two (and probably half a dozen others too, maybe they came with extra sheets of paper like tests used to). He kicked his boots off at Roxxi’s door, still smiling hard enough about this whole thing that his face was aching. Maybe his stomach too. Chase let out a low ooof but was bobbing his head already, going wherever she was taking him. ”You tell me you got Ryan Reynolds over here to have it with us and I’m never gonna be able to make all this up to you.” Although if they spilled into the bedroom now he’d have a pretty good go at it. He almost backed her up to the bed, ready to burn off the popcorn at least. Wait, what? Chase hovered outside the bathroom door as Roxxi pulled away and went in – was she freshening up? Putting on something slinky as his surprise? Alright, that’d beat out Ryan Reynolds. She emerged too quick for that though, coming back with a … Did a heart attack on his birthday count as a surprise? Yeah, probably, but … it wasn’t positive, not yet. Chase let out a slow laugh, his hand thumping his chest like he was trying to restart it anyway. ”Definitely,” he agreed, raking his teeth over his lower lip as he nodded. ”We celebrate either way.” Cause it was gonna happen, there was no doubt in his mind about that – especially after tonight. Stepping close, he wrapped his fingers lightly around hers on the test and drew her in to kiss her. This was as magical as the movie had been in its own way. Almost like an expectant father, he began pacing as soon as Roxxi went back into the bathroom. After a minute he stood in the doorway, one shoulder propped against the frame as he watched her wash her hands. His smile was slow, sweet. ”Definitely a girl,” he told her without an ounce of doubt. ”She’ll look just like her mama and she’ll have me wrapped around her finger just the same way you do.” The thought of a son made him a little more nervous, he knew exactly what trouble teenaged boys could find themselves in and God, he didn’t want that for their kids. Time passed in heavy heartbeats, nerves twisting in his stomach when the time eventually came. Chase stepped through the door slowly, his hand settling at the small of Roxxi’s back. Negative. Nah, he wasn’t gonna get broken up about it. They’d said a win either way, they would do this. He caught Roxxi’s face in his hands as she pulled back from kissing his cheek, sweeping his thumbs along her cheekbones. The corners of his mouth twitched up, another laugh wrung out of him. ”Good Catholic Girls huh?” He didn’t get out another thank you, or the I love you that was gonna follow it, flooding out of him on a tide of sappiness that he was probably better off saved from. Letting the heat of the kiss wash over him, Chase dropped his hands to Roxxi’s hips and was already boosting her up around his hips to carry her back to the bedroom. Maybe the ring was gonna make it onto her finger before they saw two lines one of those tests, but even if it didn’t, it wasn’t gonna matter. He loved her with everything he had in him and he’d love his kids the same way.
