— do monsters make war, or does war make monsters? —
KOL HAS BEEN AROUND FOR MANY, MANY YEARS and he had seen many atrocities but it wasn't often that he saw something like this. Kol was aware that Mystic Falls was like a magnet for any and all supernatural things but for it to attract an angel dead set on eradicating all of the supernatural beings that was definitely new. Kol can't even remember how many times they had been on the verge of an apocalypse but this time around, it seemed like it was approaching quickly whether they liked it or not. Had he been the older version of himself, he would have stood on the sidelines and done nothing to stop the angel from going through with his mad plan because Kol had always liked chaos too much to stop it from occurring but he was trying to be different this time around. He had spent too long not caring about what happens to his surroundings that he wants to change that and see what will happen differently if he chose to care about people and their future. Which would explain why he was currently following a locator spell with Evangeline by his side. A student from the school had gone missing and after the witches were able to perform a locator spell, now it was up to him and Evangeline to find her. The spell was currently taking them somewhere far which wasn't a good sign but he wanted to hang onto whatever optimism he could find because that would Evangeline do, right? She'd be optimistic until the very end despite all the red flags right before their eyes.
Kol walked with fast steps, knowing that if he risked using his heightened speed, it might alarm the student's abductor, so he chose to walk there instead, careful not to step on anything that might alert the abductor to their presence. "Should be just ahead." Kol said with a nod of his head following after taking yet another quick look at the map in his hand. "Something doesn't feel right. She hasn't moved in a long time." Kol said with a small frown tugging at his features. "If whoever took her has done anything to her, I'll rip them apart. So I hope for their sake that she's alive."

Evangeline had lived in a lot of different places over the years but it had to be said that she had never lived in a place that seemed to draw the supernatural to it the way that Mystic Falls did. Not only did the town seem to act as a beacon for the supernatural but it seemed to draw supernatural threats to it as well and now was no exception. This time the threat came in the form of an angel who wanted to eradicate all supernatural beings from the world and Evangeline knew that she couldn’t just stand by and let that happen. Mystic Falls was her home and she had people she cared about there, she had Alec who was a brother to her and she had family in the form of the Salvatores. She also had Kol and while she was never sure entirely what was going on between them she knew that she cared about him a lot and she had made herself a promise a long time ago that she would always be there for him when he needed her. She didn’t have magic at her disposal the way she had done when they met but she definitely wasn’t helpless, she had been a vampire for centuries and she knew that her abilities could come in handy. A student from the Salvatore School had gone missing and the witches had been able to perform a locator spell to track the girl down. They had wanted to go after the girl themselves but in the end she and Kol had insisted that they would go instead and it was that spell that they were following right now. It had taken them a long way away from the school which didn’t look good but Evangeline knew that they needed to stay positive. The fact that Kol had even offered to search for the girl showed just how far he had come and she was beyond proud of him for that. Keeping pace with Kol wasn’t easy given that his legs were longer than hers and using her speed might alarm the person who took the girl but fortunately Evangeline had had years of practice so she was able to do it. Glancing over at the map in his hands, Evangeline nodded as he said it should be just ahead. “I think you’re right,” she agreed before frowning as he said that something didn’t feel right because she hadn’t moved for a long time. “Don’t think the worst, they could just be taking a break here before moving on,” she offered, knowing that they couldn’t afford to lose it now. “We’ll find her, I promise,” she said, placing her hand in his arm and giving it a gentle squeeze. If they had done anything to the girl then Evangeline knew that she would be right there fighting alongside Kol to take those responsible down the way she always did but she hoped that it wouldn’t come to that. “Are you ready?”KOL MIKAELSON

KOL WAS TRYING TO KEEP A POSITIVE OUTLOOK, but it was not easy since he had always been a pessimistic creature and he had always assumed the worst before going into anything so that would limit any disappointment he might feel if he was proven right in the end. But he hoped that he was wrong this once and that the kid was alive because she didn't deserve to die — none of them did. He'd hate to think that he had failed as their teacher since it was his job to protect them. He snapped out of his thoughts when he felt Evangeline squeeze his arm. He looked over at her and nodded his head a few times. "I know we will." Kol replied with a hint of warmth visible in his tone.
"Born ready." Kol replied when Evangeline asked if he was ready. He looked at the map one last time before he folded it as quietly as possible and placed it in his pocket as he looked ahead of him to see three people standing over someone who was on the ground, unmoving. It didn't take long for him to realize that he was currently looking at the girl's abductors and when he saw the gleam of a blade in their hands, that was when he blurred to them, using his heightened speed to push them back and away from the girl. "Sorry to interrupt, but if anyone's dying here tonight, it's you lot." His veins were soon making themselves visible, same with the veins under his eyes as he blurred to one of them, pinning him against the tree, slamming him against it hard enough that it made the tree shake. When he heard the sound of rapidly approaching footsteps behind him, he released the masked guy from his grasp to fend off the attacker, avoiding the slashes from the blade in his hand. He kicked him in the chest, sending him flying back. He made his way back to where Evangeline was as the masked attackers stood up, their blades ready. When they attacked again, Kol was there to meet them halfway alongside Evangeline and with how strong Kol and Evangeline were, it wasn't long before the attackers were on the ground. "Check if she's alive, I'll keep an eye on them." Kol told Evangeline with a nod of his head following.

Evangeline had known Kol for a long time and the truth was that she couldn’t remember the last time she had seen him care about something this much. Normally he didn’t let anyone see the chinks in the armour he liked to wear and she really couldn’t blame him after everything that he had been through but teaching at the Salvatore School had changed him somewhat. It had given him a purpose and it had to be said that Evangeline liked the person that he was becoming. Years ago he probably wouldn’t have cared about a kid being taken, he had fought with her to save her kingdom and he had cared enough to turn her when she was fatally wounded but other than that he kept people at an arm’s length. Evangeline had no idea how the kids at the Salvatore School and College were holding it together while facing what they were up against with Ben’s father but they were doing the best they could so Evangeline knew that the least she and Kol could do was try and keep the other kids safe while they did that. She wasn’t sure whether the girl being taken was tied to any of that or not but either way she knew that they were going to find out. The warmth in Kol’s voice as he spoke was enough to draw a smile to Evangeline’s lips. “Who would have ever thought that you’d become a protector of the people again,” she teased, her expression playful this time as she looked over at him. It had been such a long time since she’d seen this side of Kol but she couldn’t deny that it was good to see it again. Nodding as Kol said he was born ready, Evangeline moved forward at the same time that Kol did and as he pinned one of the guys against the tree, Evangeline engaged with one of the others. They didn’t seem particularly strong but that didn’t mean that they weren’t deadly with the blades they were wielding. She and Kol were unarmed but they were far from helpless and Evangeline knocked the guy to the ground, soon finding herself side by side with Kol as they fought the three of them off when they got back to their feet. They were determined, she would give them that, but they were up against an Original vampire and a vampire who was over five hundred years old so she knew that they really didn’t stand a chance. The two of them weren’t new to this like the girl they had taken probably was and it wasn’t long before all three of them were on the ground once more. At least two of them were unconscious but Evangeline knew better than to let her guard down. As Kol said he would keep an eye on the guys while she checked on the girl, Evangeline nodded. Making her way over to where the girl was, she crouched down next to her and felt relief flood through her as she saw that the girl was still breathing. “She’s pretty banged up but she’s alive. We’d better deal with these three and then get her back to the school,” she said as she looked up at Kol. “What do you want to do with them?” she asked, not sure whether he would just want to kill them and be done with it or whether he would rather take them back to the school and try and get some answers. KOL ROLLED HIS EYES AT HER WORDS, but there was a small smile tugging at the corner of his lips. "Certainly not me." Especially with a history like his. He thought that he would only ever stay as an enemy of the people rather than their savior and even with his most recent development, he still doesn't consider himself "one of the good ones" but as someone who is simply trying to make his ledger look less red.
Kol kept his eyes on the guys all while waiting for Evangeline to say something about the girl's state. "Good." Kol replied when she revealed that she was alive, just a bit banged up. "Looks like it's your lucky day. You'll meet your end less painfully than planned." Kol told them all while keeping a close eye on them and if any of them tried to even move an inch, he'd kill them on the spot. Evangeline's question pulled a hum from his lips and in an instant, he was blurring toward them, each body dropping one after the other before he grabbed the remaining one by the throat, squeezing his windpipe tightly until he started passing out. "Let's bring him with us. I want answers." Kol wanted to know if they were planning on attacking again or planning on taking any of the students again. He needed to know why the hell they were doing any of this to start with. Kol turned his attention to the student before he looked at Evangeline. "Let's go." He hauled the passed out guy by the arm and dragged him with him to the school where he'd keep him in one of the cells 'til he got the answers he needed from him.

“I don’t know about that, I always knew you had it in you,” Evangeline shrugged. She had seen how far Kol would go to protect people when he had fought with her to save her kingdom from invaders. It hadn’t been his fight back then but he had still stood with her and he had saved her life by turning her into a vampire. That wasn’t something that she had ever taken lightly because she knew that he had never turned anyone before but she had seen a different side of him that day and it had to be said that the Kol she was seeing now reminded her of that man so much. She knew that he had done a lot of awful things along the way but she knew that he would always mean the world to her even if she wouldn’t necessarily admit that. It was clear that he cared about his job at the Salvatore School and about the students there as well, she hadn’t necessarily expected that from him but it was good to see him doing something that he enjoyed. She knew that he wanted to help the girl who was taken and Evangeline was relieved to find that they had managed to get there in time after all. She had started to wonder if perhaps they were too late but the girl was still breathing and Evangeline knew that once they got her back to the school then she would be just fine. “You’re showing them mercy, you really are glad she’s okay,” Evangeline quipped as Kol said that he would make the others meet their end less painfully than he would have done. Evangeline didn’t like killing and she never had done but the men before them had targeted an innocent girl and that was unforgiveable as far as Evangeline was concerned. “That works for me,” she nodded as Kol said they should take the final man with them so he could get some answers. “I’ll call Claire when we’re back at the school, she’ll take care of the bodies,” she said, making a record of the coordinates on her phone before picking the girl up. Despite her small frame Evangeline was stronger than she looked even before she became a vampire and carrying the girl while Kol dragged the man by the arm would be no problem for her. “Did you recognise any of them?” she asked as they walked, not sure whether Kol had seen them around before or not. She thought that she’d recognised one of them but she couldn’t place where she knew him from. KOL MIKAELSON
