The place had probably been a workshop at one time or another. Dark blocky shadows marked out where benches still stood, the equipment on them likely stripped out and sold – either before or after the place went to ruin. Crowley wove his way between them, navigating across the concrete floor. What little light that spilled in through the shattered windows didn’t do much to hide the stains on the floor. They weren’t his work, weren’t his demons’ work either, but it looked like someone might’ve repurposed the place recently.
That thought was enough to have Crowley pulling his coat up around his ears as he ducked through the warped door frame and out into the dark space between the two buildings. He could’ve teleported out of there, straight back to his other hovel here in town, but Campbell’s was just a couple of blocks over. A drink or two with his boy and he’d head back for another delightful evening listening to his underlings grumble about the accommodation. It wasn’t like he’d intended to abandon hell and hide out here. That was all on Lucifer and his own sodding mother.
His upper lip curled, his hatred of Rowena had only grown in the months that she’d hidden away – or been rotting on the other side if Luci had finally done what he’d warned her about and got rid of his little pet witch. It wouldn’t have been the first time some heavy hitter had believed that they’d stamped her out, but like a cockroach Rowena had survived it all so far. Forget nine lives, she’d had dozens. At least he’d taken after her when it came to putting self-preservation first. Look after number one and don’t worry about anybody else. Up until he’d brought Henrik back, that’d been all he’d done.
Crowley could see the lights of the bar in the distance, spilling out across the alleyway that ran parallel to one side of the square. Campbell’s was like a will-o’-the-wisp, luring drinkers into the dark, some of them going to their peril. Not him. He’d spent enough time in this town watching his back. It was obvious when he was being tailed and the light scuff of shoes following yards back from him screamed ‘doing a bloody awful job of being sneaky about it’.
A half block out from Campbell’s, Crowley stopped. He hissed out a sigh like something had irritated and half turned to lift his foot up to a low windowsill on the back end of one of the other business. Turning his head as he fussed with his laces, he hitched his brows at the figure now outlined by the weak street lights that spilled over the alleyway. ”Can I help you? You’re lookin’ a little lost there. It ain’t easy to do that in a town this small, you know?” Maybe out in the woods, although he suspected that most things in the town could sniff their way out of there easily enough. It was the slowly shrinking human population that had to worry about losing their way back to civilisation while they were things out there looking for a man – or woman – sized dinner.

Eddie knew that by now he should be getting better at the whole being a werewolf and no longer being locked away by his parents thing but the truth was that he was still trying to get to grips with it all. It had been months since Jed had bitten him and during that time Jed had become a hybrid and handed over leadership of the pack to Hope. Eddie knew deep down that he should perhaps reach out and ask for help but the truth was he wasn’t really too sure how to do that and with Summer going through the same thing since she’d become a werewolf in order to protect their family, the two of them had been doing their best to figure it all out together. Jed had helped both of them and Eddie was grateful to him for that but for far too long he had been locked away and made to rely on others so Eddie liked being able to try doing things on his own now. It wasn’t always easy but then again things rarely were these days it seemed. He had been given a place at the Salvatore School so he could learn more about what he had become and he was doing his best but he would be lying if he said that there weren’t things that he found difficult. He kept trying to remind himself that he hadn’t been trying for very long but he didn’t just have to learn how to be a werewolf, he had to try and get used to being around people, attend school and catch up with his schoolwork as well. It was a lot to say the least especially when added to the fact that the reason he had become a werewolf in the first place was because it had been the only way to save him after his parents tried to kill him. Eddie hadn’t known that the supernatural world existed until that day and ever since then he had been doing his best to get to grips with that as well but there were still times when it just never seemed like it was enough. Now and then Eddie found himself feeling like he needed to get away from everything for a little while and now was one of those times. His parents had compelled him into never leaving the house and he’d been made to forget the way they had fed on him and the other kids they had adopted but all of those memories had come flooding back to him after he was bitten and Eddie had been going to therapy to try and work through it all but sometimes he just needed to escape and get some fresh air. He tended to split his time between the house he shared with his siblings and his dorm at the Salvatore School, not liking being shut away in a house full of all of his siblings after the way that Ada had so callously handed him over to their parents to be killed, and it seemed to be working but even then it could still get a bit too much. That evening Eddie had decided to go for a walk and the truth was that he really hadn’t been paying any attention to where he was going, he had just let his feet take him wherever they wanted to. He hadn’t really gone into town too much, he preferred to stick to the Salvatore School and the home he shared with his siblings, so he didn’t really know his way around too well and eventually by the time he was ready to head back home he really wasn’t sure where he was. He had been wandering around trying to get his bearings, completely forgetting about the map app on his phone since until he started at the Salvatore School he hadn’t had one, and he snapped out of it at the sound of a voice. “Trust me, this town is plenty big enough to get lost in,” Eddie admitted, rubbing the back of his neck sheepishly. “I don’t suppose you know the way to Sycamore Street, do you?”CROWLEY

Practically every children’s story started with warnings about not getting lost. Bad things happened when you walked away from your parents. It wasn’t half as much about someone using candy to lure you into a van as much as it was the witch that’d roast you in the oven of her gingerbread house or the wolf who’d eat you up – grandma what big teeth you’ve got. In Mystic Falls enough of those nightmares were real that good little children should’ve been passing Grimm’s tales around like a handbook of how to stay out of trouble. Crowley almost cackled at the thought as the boy came into sight. Once upon a time he might’ve been one of those things looking to take advantage, but looked how the mighty had fallen.
He slipped his hands into his pockets, eyeing the boy with narrowed eyes and a faint smile playing around his lips. If this was one of Lucifer’s dutiful little demon sheep – too scared to stand up to the boss who’d bump them all off the minute he felt like it. Staying out of fear wasn’t any way to exist, if you asked him. This one didn’t look scared, he hadn’t lit up when he’d seen him either, like he’d just spotted his pay day. Luci had probably put out the message that the one who bought him in would get to sit at the right hand of their proud papa – as though his yellow eyed lapdog would ever vacate that spot.
The ’can I help you’ seemed to fall on deaf ears at first. A ruefulness seemed to grip the kid – if he was playing at being guileless and innocent then he deserved a bloody Oscar for it. He’d spent enough centuries watching his own backside not to fall for it though. Crowley smiled, the edges of it sharp as he tipped his head back and forth like he was considering the observation. ”That’s what they created maps for. They even put ‘em on cell phones these days.” Although there were plenty who still couldn’t read them, more still who’d follow Google’s instructions right out into the middle of nowhere – where undoubtedly they’d meet someone ecstatic to help, right before they tore their throat out and left them in that desolate little spot they’d found.
This one was lucky he’d fond him out here instead of one of those things. It wasn’t like he was in the habit of helping people out of the goodness of long vanished heart though. Usually there was a bargain to be struck, a deal that’d mean another soul heading downstairs in a couple of years to pay the price for whatever boon he’d bestowed on them.
Crowley’s lips pursed faintly as he glanced past the boy and then back over his shoulder. He hadn’t exactly gone learning the street names, he’d had no need to when a single thought could send him zipping from here to his hovel and back again. You didn’t need to know what avenue led to what street then. ”Can’t say it’s familiar. That where you’re goin’ or where you were comin’ from?” Likely the former. In that case, heading out to the square itself would probably set him right again. ”If I was you, son, I’d avoid the back streets the next time. It’s not like you can get lost just passing through the square.” The town spread beyond that, though, and it was those dark little pockets where things like him could hide under their rocks.

There were people at the Salvatore School who knew what Eddie had been through and knew what had happened to him before Jed bit him and turned him into a werewolf and they all told him that he could talk to them if he needed to but the truth was that he didn’t really know how to go about opening up to people. He was trying to work through everything that had happened with a therapist but the truth was that he didn’t always find it easy to open up. Perhaps it came from the fact that he lost his whole family in a fire and was then adopted by parents who had used him as a human blood bag for years before finally almost killing him when they decided it was time to kill one of their adopted kids but either way he still felt like people would judge him for what had happened once they knew the truth. With the pack he tended to stay quiet most of the time and it was the same in his classes, he was pretty sure that so many of the students saw him as the strange kid who didn’t really know how to be around people but he was doing his best and he knew that he couldn’t do anymore than that. Now Eddie hadn’t even realised how lost he must have seemed until the guy asked if he could help him. He was still trying to find his way around Mystic Falls and most of the time it was fine when he knew where he needed to go but that day he had decided to just go for a walk and in the end he had gotten himself so turned around that he had no idea how to get to where he needed to go. “I guess you’re right. I’m not very good with my phone,” Eddie admitted. He knew how to use it to make calls and send texts but when it came to anything else he didn’t really know what he was doing. Summer had tried to show him but he hadn’t had one himself until he arrived at the Salvatore School so it was something that he was still getting used to. “It’s where I’m going,” he explained as he looked over at the man. “I felt like going somewhere different for a change, the square can get a little crowded sometimes,” Eddie admitted. “I’m not so good at being around a lot of people.” For someone who had been compelled not to leave the house until a few months ago, sometimes going somewhere quiet outside was just what he needed. He liked being at the Salvatore School and there were people there who were helping him catch up with his studies but it was still a lot. That day he had wanted to get away from everything for a while and clear his head and the walk had definitely helped with that but now it was time to head home and he had absolutely no idea where he was going. “I’m Eddie, by the way,” he added as he realised he hadn’t introduced himself. “Where are you headed?”CROWLEY

Moving on with the times when you were the king of hell was a little easier than when you were a two bit tailor’s son who’d been dead for hundreds of years, or a member of some strange supernatural cult that kept you trapped in the backwoods your entire life – the Jungle Book hadn’t been complete fantasy. You escaped after what felt like a millennia or two of torture. You got yourself up there to the big wide world (one you hadn’t seen while you were that tailor) and you rolled with everything that came your way. Jazz (overrated and just headache inducing), cars (flashier than a flea bitten horse, but why bother when you could travel practically everywhere in the blink of an eye?), television (talking boxes, who would’ve imagined), cell phones (now they were handy, far less messy than summonings too!). Crowley liked to think he’d adapted, looking nothing like the kid who’d been dropped off at the workhouse by witch who’d returned to try and destroy what he’d built centuries later. No matter what reason Rowena had tried to give him, she had done it out of spite.
Whoever was parenting this kid might’ve held him back technology wise for the same reasons, but some just weren’t … technologically minded. Crowley studied the boy, trying to figure out where he fell on that scale. The naive impression wafted off of him like the noxious stink did from the dumpsters. If he’d half a clue about what went on in the town he wouldn’t have been down here in the first place. Crowley made a small noise in his throat, something close to amusement. ”Sounds like you need a few lessons, son. They’ll keep you from ending up somewhere like this.” He gestured around the two of them as though that would indicate the trouble the kid might’ve walked straight into.
Lacking a map the next best thing would’ve been someone accompanying him, but then he likely wouldn’t have been taking what must’ve looked like a short cut. Crowley had been about to nod in acknowledgement of the answer to his chest, but then the kid had him snorting. ”You can say that again. Seems like every man and his dog are there. The streets on the outskirts of this town must be absolutely deserted.” And that was why he’d gone skulking through the back streets instead. If Lucifer’s good little demons had any sense, those would’ve been where they went looking for him, but like everybody else in Mystic Falls they seemed drawn to those bright lights instead. Well, they weren’t gonna find him there, weren’t gonna find him at all if he had anything to say about it.
”That makes two of us,” Crowley muttered. Henrik’s presence at the pub meant that he’d turn up there every now and then, but crowds these days put that itch between his shoulder blades. Crowley shrugged his shoulders now, like he was settling his coat around himself, the demon version of a disgruntled hen. He kept his hands in his pockets, but lifted his chin at Eddie by way of greeting. ”Crowley. I’m headed for a drink,” he admitted. ”I’m guessing you’re not old enough to be suppin’ at a bar?” Eddie looked young enough that he was probably still chugging a glass of milk with dinner.

Eddie had spent years confined to the four walls of the home he had shared with his siblings and parents. He had been compelled not to leave the house and with the windows boarded up so no sunlight could enter, the only chance he’d had to see the outside world had been through small cracks in the boards or in a photo that his sister showed him. He wasn’t used to having so much freedom and in a way he felt a little guilty since he didn’t spend so much time with his siblings these days, instead choosing to stay at the Salvatore School more often especially during the full moon so he could be among others like him but Eddie knew that was the right thing for him. That day he had decided to go for a walk before heading home to his siblings but the truth was that right now he had absolutely no idea where he was or how to get back to anywhere that was familiar to him. He could get to and from school in his sleep but otherwise he had never really taken that much time to get to know the layout of the town and he regretted that now. “It doesn’t seem so bad around here,” Eddie shrugged even though he knew all too well that looks could be deceiving. “My sister tried to show me but I couldn’t follow what she was saying. I know the basics but that’s it,” he added. Summer had made sure that he knew how to call and text and she really had tried to show him other things that he could do on his phone but the truth was that he hadn’t really been interested in learning and that was why it hadn’t sunk in. He had his freedom now after being shut away for so long and to him there were much more important things to think about. “They really are, you’re the first person I’ve seen out here,” Eddie chuckled. It hadn’t really helped him find his way home but he knew that if it had come to it then he could have called Summer and asked her how to get home. He knew that she probably would have ended up telling him to wait there while she met up with him and made sure that he got home safely but he could think of worse things. Eddie liked being surrounded by others like him at the Salvatore School and at home he was surrounded by his siblings, albeit he knew that there was no way that he could trust some of them after what had happened, but there were times when it could get a little overwhelming and that was why he had decided to go out for a bit on his own that day. He had needed some time alone to clear his head and he knew that it was the right decision even if he had ended up getting a little lost. Nodding as the guy said that he wasn’t so good at being around a lot of people either, Eddie offered him a small smile as he introduced himself in return. “It’s nice to meet you.” He didn’t know too many people and he wasn’t too sure what to make of Crowley so far but Eddie knew that was probably just his distrustful nature coming into play. It was difficult to know who to trust these days after his parents and some of his siblings had turned on him so he knew to be careful. As the guy spoke again, Eddie shook his head. “No sir, not unless they’re happy to serve minors,” he shrugged. “I normally go to the Grill.”CROWLEY

There wasn’t a time Crowley could remember in his long, long life where he hadn’t known about the supernatural. Rowena hadn’t exactly been secretive when it came to the witch stuff. He’d still been a kid when she’d abandoned him and although she’d tried to deny it later, feeding him some story about his dad abandoning them, he’d known exactly what she’d done it too. Was it any sodding wonder that he’d got himself in deep with Hell with all that awareness knocking about in his head? It wasn’t any surprise where he’d got his ambition from either, that was all Rowena, as much as it galled him to attribute anything half good about himself to that woman. It was a wonder anyone who grew up in this town wasn’t aware of what was going on under their noses too. Angels, demons, werewolves running lose on the full moon, the secretive covens, that shop right there on the square with its back room full of mystical stuff nobody was meant to know about. Some still walked through it all with blinkers on, like that was gonna protect them when one of those little factions decided that now was the time to lash out.
Crowley chuckled faintly before he let the sound roll away. Clucking his tongue, he shook his head at the kid. ”I’m guessin’ you haven’t been readin’ the papers then.” There were stories almost daily, ones that’d left him scoffing. The Sheriff must’ve spent half of every day covering up what was going on around here. One wrong turn got people in over their heads and once they were there it wasn’t so easy to back out. Crowley’s brows rose at the boy’s admission that his sister had tried to help him get along with his phone. ”Sounds like you’ve been raised by wolves.” Puffing out a breath, he shook his head again. Not unheard of around here, he guessed, but most people were from this century and could work Google Maps at least. His eyes narrowed, his gaze flicking over the boy’s face like he’d get some hint of why he was a little blind when it came to where he was.
”Count yourself lucky it was me, son,” Crowley drawled. It could’ve been worse. Lucifer wouldn’t have gone talking his way around things, his people would’ve tormented the kid for shits and giggles. There were other things that wouldn’t even play with their dinner first. Those things wouldn’t have got very far with him, but Lucifer and his people, especially his yellow eyed lapdog were a constant concern. Crowley scanned the alley beyond the kid like he expected one of them to pop up there at any second. Looking back, he introduced himself, his lips flickering into the slightest smile at Eddie’s polite response. The kid might’ve been a little blind to his surroundings but someone had raised him with manners at least. ”Don’t imagine any of ‘em are too happy to do that,” Crowley muttered. Especially Campbell’s. Henrik would’ve been watching out for kids from the Salvatore School and his missus wasn’t the sort to risk her license. ”You know where that is at least?” Most kids seemed to gravitate their way towards food, even if they couldn’t find anything else that was practically right in front of them.

Eddie had lived through a horror worse than anything that most people could probably even imagine. He had been adopted into a family where his new parents were vampires and for years they had used him and their other adopted children as human blood bags while their biological children were kept free of all of that and were allowed to live normal lives. He had been compelled not to leave the house, practically starved and fed from whenever they felt like it. The last part was something they had at least had the good sense to make him and the others forget but now he was a werewolf he remembered everything. It had all come to a head when they had decided that it was time to hunt one of their adopted kids and kill them and Eddie had been handed over to them by Ada for that purpose. He had seen the way his sister had taken great delight in doing so, she had wanted to see blood spilled and Eddie knew that he was never going to forgive her for that. He was trying to make the best of his new life now but when he closed his eyes at night he often found himself back there once more and he knew that the memories of that day would never truly leave him. As Crowley said that he guessed he hadn’t been reading the papers, Eddie shook his head. “I try not to, there’s enough horror in the world as it is,” he shrugged. He had already lived through the ordeal with his adoptive parents and now he had to endure his bones breaking as he shifted into a wolf every time there was a full moon so he knew that he didn’t need to go reading the papers and adding to that. It hadn’t been his choice to become a werewolf but he was grateful that he was still alive at least. As the guy said it sounded like he’d been raised by wolves, a wry smile formed on Eddie’s face. “You’re not far off,” he admitted, a humourless laugh escaping him as he spoke. Leaches was more like it but Eddie knew that not all vampires were like his parents. Now he was enrolled in a school that was full of kids who were supernatural like he was and he had been able to learn so much about them. He hadn’t really opened up to anyone about what his parents had done and he wasn’t sure whether his sister Summer had either but he had talked to Doctor Saltzman about it when he was first taken to the school and from what he had been told the lengths that his parents had gone to weren’t normal at all. He hadn’t heard of anything like it before and from what Eddie could gather that really was saying something. He knew the guy hadn’t been referring to that because there was no way he could know what Eddie had been through and the fact that he didn’t know how to use his phone was probably strange enough in itself but he hadn’t been able to stop his thoughts from returning to his parents and what had happened like they so often did these days. “You really think it’s that bad around here?” Eddie questioned, unable to deny that he was surprised. He was a werewolf now and he was being trained in how to protect himself but maybe being at the school was luring him into somewhat of a false sense of security. He knew there was an angel out there who was hell bent on killing everyone who was supernatural and he had also heard that there were hunters in town but the truth was that for the most part he had been keeping his head down. He still wasn’t that used to being outside and it was taking time to get his bearings. “I didn’t think so,” Eddie admitted as Crowley said he didn’t think that any of the people at Campbells would be happy to serve minors. “Not with alcohol, I don’t drink,” he added quickly, realising that what he’d said might have been taken the wrong way. Eddie knew that was probably pretty unusual for someone his age and a couple of times he’d been offered a beer while some of the kids were winding down at school but he had always declined. After being compelled for so long he didn’t particularly like the thought of anything clouding his mind these days even if alcohol wouldn’t affect him like it would have done while he was human. As Crowley asked if he knew where the Grill was, Eddie thought about it for a moment. “I think so,” he nodded. “I think it’s that way,” he said, turning and nodding in the direction he had just come from. “Please don’t let me stop you if there’s somewhere else you’d rather go though,” he said, not wanting Crowley to feel like he had to stick around and babysit him or anything like that.
