There’d been a time when the final bell of the day would spell the start of evening hanging out with his best friend … OK … his one proper friend. Playing video games, poking around his dad’s files, practising for hours on end to try and get themselves off of the bench and actually onto the lacrosse team. That felt like a lifetime ago now, the naivety they’d all been languishing in long gone. Even before they’d made the leap to Mystic Falls to chase after Allison, or rather the demon who’d been using their friend as some sorta monstrous sock puppet, things had been a million miles away from that life. Scott getting bitten, Jackson turning into the kanima, the nogitsune, Derek’s seriously bad taste in girlfriends, Deucalion, Allison dying. Each event had twisted them further and while it might’ve looked like their lives were settling down now that Allison was back and free of the demon, it was pretty damn obvious to him that it wouldn’t stay that way for long. There was always something new and monstrous out there, something ready to take a swipe at them. Stepping back and drawing breath while there was peace would have been wiser than plunging straight ahead in anticipation of the next big bad but Stiles knew that preparation was better than being blindsided yet again.
The minute the bell rang he’d scrambled out of his seat in his English class, slinging books he’d barely skimmed last night back in his bag and shouldering it as he strode out, the first in the room to disappear. A couple of nights ago he’d gotten himself into trouble out in the woods, running straight into a pair of vampires in his rush to figure out where the demon had gone to ground. That, he knew, had been stupid but never let it be said that Stiles Stilinski didn’t eventually learn from his mistakes. Tonight he was taking it easier, triple checking the signs before he headed out to hunt again. Hurrying across the parking lot, Stiles threw his pack into the jeep, following it in with an eager hop that turned into a dull thud as he landed in the seat and caught sight of Scott through the windscreen. Cursing inwardly, he sucked his lower lip between his teeth for a moment before he released it and rolled down the window. ”Long time no …” Feeling a little busted, Stiles let his voice trail off, gestured abstractedly with his fingers as he nudged the door back open and turned in the seat to plant his elbows on his thighs. ”Guess it’s past time for me to check-in, get the buddy hugs going again…” Mustering up a grin, Stiles spread his arms wide, waggling his brows for a moment. It was gonna take more than a hug as a mea culpa this time.

Scott would be lying if he said that there weren’t still times when he found himself missing the days when it was just him and Stiles against the world. Other friends had come and gone for both of them but they had always stuck together and he felt certain that they always would. He loved their other friends and of course there was the fact that had things not turned out the way they had done then chances were that he and Stiles wouldn’t have grown as close to Allison, Lydia and the others as they had done but at the end of the day things used to be so much simpler than they were now. There was a time when the biggest worry that the two of them had was how to get all of their homework done on time, what was going on with a few of the freaky cases that Stiles’ dad was working on and how they were going to get onto the starting line up of the lacrosse team. All of those things had seemed so important in the past but now Scott knew that those problems really were nothing compared to what he and his friends seemed to face on a daily basis now. They had faced kanimas, darachs, a nogitsune, a deranged Alpha and an Alpha pack and most of them had lived to tell the tale but two of their number had paid the ultimate price. Allison and Aiden had both lost their lives although Allison was back with them and getting to grips were her life again now that she was free from the demon but they also had another thing to worry about – what had happened to Derek. It seemed to Scott like he and his friends just couldn’t catch a break and he had a feeling that it really was only a matter of time before something had to give. He and his friends were often hanging on by just a thread but thankfully they were all strong, resourceful and they refused to give up so their track record was pretty good at the moment and he knew that he just had to hope that they would find a way to help Derek sooner or later, they had to after everything that he had done for them. Until then Scott was just taking it one day at a time and coming to terms with life in Mystic Falls. He had known straight away that there was something going on in the town, much like Beacon Hills there seemed to be an abundance of supernatural creatures running around but Scott knew better than to let that worry him too much. He still didn’t know what had happened to the demon that had been possessing Allison or who could have possibly made Derek go from being the proud werewolf that he used to be to a shapeshifter but he didn’t doubt that they would get to the bottom of it eventually. For now there was something else on his mind though, he needed to check on Stiles and as the last bell rang Scott made his way straight outside, not at all surprised to see that Stiles had beat him to it and was ready to leave. Relieved when Stiles stopped and opened the door at the sight of him, Scott rolled his eyes as Stiles said it was time to get the buddy hugs going again but he knew he might as well indulge his friend and he hugged him tightly for a moment before letting go. “What’s going on with you Stiles? I’m worried about you,” he admitted as he stepped back and looked over at his friend. “Have you been avoiding me?”STILES STILINSKI

He hadn’t entirely been hiding from his friends after they’d gotten Allison back, Stiles would’ve argued against anybody saying he had done. If he had he wouldn’t have been going to classes, wouldn’t have gone to practice either, but, he would admit that maybe he’d not spent as much time around them as usual. A part of him had wanted to, had wanted to go back to the old days when their lives hadn’t been ruled by the supernatural. They could’ve had that here in Mystic Falls now that Allison was back but they’d just have been burying their heads in the sands. Since he’d arrived in Mystic Falls he’d discovered that there was just as much hiding in town as there had been in Beacon Hills, more perhaps. Trying to track the demon who’d been riding around in Allison’s body had put him right in the path of vampires and Stiles was pretty sure he’d just scratched the surface there. There were things here that could do harm to him and his friends … and maybe that was why he’d kinda left Scott out of this continued quest to track the thing down. His friend had already suffered enough at his hands. It had been his curiosity that had them out in the woods that first night when Scott had been bitten and he’d been the one holding the sword when the nogitsune had run Scott through with it. Did he think his friend would’ve been better off without him there? Not at all, but Stiles knew that maybe things might’ve been easier on Scott if he didn’t drag him into any more trouble. This reunion had been a long time coming and Stiles knew he should’ve prepared himself a little better for it. Scott’d always understood his need to pull everything apart, to rush straight into the middle of everything weird and wonderful, had stood by him through that. That meant he should’ve been able to be open about it, but if he’d done that then Scott would likely have been out in those woods with him when he’d run into the two vampires, having to defend him again instead of being home, working on his math homework or something like that. Stiles guessed it might’ve been easier if he’d just done that himself instead of working on this demon problem every night, stringing up his room like some deranged cat’s cradle again. Biting his tongue, Stiles hugged Scott back as his buddy took him up on the offer he’d made. ”Worried?” Stiles blew a raspberry as he pulled back, shrugging off his friends words even as he felt guilty hearing them. ”There’s nothing to worry about. Do I look like I’m in any sort of trouble?” Not right now he wasn’t, but back a couple of weeks, with those vamps … yeah, he’d not been as careful with this as he should’ve been. Screwing up his face, Stiles shook his head, gesturing with a hand to cut off Scott’s suggestion. ”There’s been no avoiding,” he promised, laughing off something that was only a half truth. ”Things have just been a little busy, you know, keeping my head down, trying to do what I promised my dad… Where’ve you been?” Turning questions around had never worked well to distract anybody for long but Stiles knew it’d let him avoid having to rip the band off a little longer. Really, he had been keeping his head down, taking care of his dad the way he always had done, but that’d only been a small part of what he’d really been up to. Tags: SCOTT MCCALL

Scott had known Stiles pretty much all his life and he was pretty sure that there wasn’t anyone that knew his best friend better. Stiles had his quirks and there were times when Scott thought that the other guy was crazy but they had always stood by each other no matter what and he knew deep down that they always would. Even when he was trying to get a handle on being a werewolf Stiles had refused to leave his side and even though Scott had tried to push him away he had refused to listen. Scott had felt bad about putting his friend in danger but no matter how hard he tried to protect the people he cared about they were going to make their own decisions so all he could do was support them and keep them as safe as possible. His friends were going to get involved in the world he had found himself thrown into the day he became a werewolf no matter what but that didn’t mean that he couldn’t try and help. It was clear to him that Stiles had been avoiding him as much as possible ever since they managed to save Allison and the truth was that he hated how distant his friend had become. He liked to think that he was pretty good at reading Stiles and what was going on with him but this time he didn’t have a clue and he was determined to get to the bottom of it. They had found out the hard way over the years that keeping things from each other just didn’t work, they worked best when they were together and no matter what he knew that he wasn’t going to give up trying to find out what was going on. When he woke up that morning Scott hadn’t set out to confront Stiles but after his friend had continued to avoid him that day he had known that he’d had to do something. Things couldn’t go on as they were, he missed having his best friend around so he knew that they needed to work it out. He and the gang had been through far too much together to fall apart now so he knew he just couldn’t let that happen. Scott was still finding his feet as an alpha and he knew that there was no way he could do that without his best friend by his side but there was much more to it than that, he was worried about Stiles. The last time he had kept something to himself it had been when they were dealing with the nogitsune and things really hadn’t worked out well with that so he knew that keeping secrets just wasn’t an option. Scott really wasn’t surprised when Stiles brushed off his concern but he studied his friend as he asked if he looked like he was in any kind of trouble. “Not at the moment but you’re keeping something from me,” he said carefully. There wasn’t a doubt in his mind about that he just didn’t know what it was that Stiles didn’t want to tell him. As Stiles spoke again, Scott shook his head. “Stiles, don’t lie to me just tell me what is going on. You know I’m not going to give up until you do,” he warned. He had always managed to get information out of Stiles eventually in the past and he didn’t intend on changing that now. STILES STILINSKI

There’d been times in their friendship that had stretched for over a decade when he and Scott hadn’t seen head to head on things but for the most part it had been the two of them against the world. Due to differing circumstances both of them had ended up the kids of single parents. Scott’s mom had worked at the hospital and his dad had been a slave to the station. That’d pretty much left the two of them to lean on one another. That’d been fine, would’ve carried on being fine if the supernatural Armageddon hadn’t been set off in Beacon Hills. It had though, the Argents coming back and the Hales going at loggerheads with them and everything else lurking beneath the human surface. The power plays that had them all butting heads had widened their group out until there was a half dozen people he knew he could rely on no matter what. They’d been there for him when the nogitsune had taken control of his mind and they were there to help him pick the pieces up afterwards. He might not’ve been able to find the words afterwards but Stiles had been grateful for everything they’d done for him. Allison was avoiding the hell out of all of them now but Stiles knew all of them would be there for her if she needed it again. If the thing came back. The others might’ve believed now that it wouldn’t, might’ve given up the hunt, but he was still in that place where he wanted to help and that meant him holing up in his room night after night, stringing up the connections he found, pinpointing spots on his map to check out.
That map had been calling to him again this afternoon but the instant Scott had finally tracked him down Stiles had known he likely wouldn’t be heading home alone to it today. Stiles went to make a dismissive noise with his mouth again and shrug off Scott’s concern but instead he found his hand reaching out to settle on the window frame, fingers already tapping a rapid rhythm on it as his teeth sank into his lower lip. ”I keep lots of things to myself,” he managed feebly. ”But nothing important. I promise you that.” In the grand scheme of things this really wasn’t on the world ending level … but it was enough to put that look on his friend’s face. At Scott’s warning Stiles went still for a moment. Scott’d only gotten more relentless with the bite, taking this whole alpha leader of the pack thing seriously enough that he’d likely follow him the whole way, badgering him until he got a look at that wall. Huffing out a breath, Stiles shifted in his seat, propping his elbows on his knees, his foot tapping the only continuing sign of motion. ”Anybody ever tell you that you worry too much?” he asked, mouth twitching for a moment before he gave another one of those sighs. ”OK, god’s honest here. I’ve been looking for Allison’s demon. I know you guys all thought it was … you know …” Stiles lifted one hand, gesturing vaguely into the air with it, indicating that the thing had just poofed. ”I don’t think it went that easy. I think it’s still here in town and I’ve been trying to track it down without dragging you guys into it and giving the thing another target.” Technically he knew it would have one in him but he’d dealt with that before, had lived with the nogitsune riding around in his head. If he had to do it again and trust that his friends would find a way to rescue him then he’d do that rather than have any of them suffering.

There were times when Scott found himself wishing that he and Stiles hadn’t been thrown into the supernatural world. If they hadn’t heard what was going on over the police scanner that day then Peter never would have bitten him and they would have still been none the wiser. Scott knew that it would be much easier that way but then again he also knew that he and Stiles would still be nobodies if that things hadn’t worked out the way they had done. He and Stiles had only really ever had each other while they were growing up, the two of the were more like brothers than just friends, and Scott had always been fine with that because he had known that he could count on Stiles no matter what but he couldn’t deny that it was nice having more people to count on. Their little group that used to be just the two of them had grown considerably and that was something that he hadn’t seen coming but at the same time he was glad that it had. Even after everything that had happened and the uncertainty that they were still facing now in respect of Allison and Derek they at least had each other and that was something that he knew he never wanted to lose. Now Allison was lying in the hospital in a coma and the doctors weren’t sure whether she would ever wake up while Derek had somehow gone from being a werewolf to a shapeshifter and had seemingly left town again without a word. It was a lot to take in and the truth was that Scott had needed Stiles to talk to so he hated the fact that his friend had been avoiding him for so long. He knew that it couldn’t be a coincidence, no matter how busy the two of them got they never let their friendship suffer so that only left one possibility – Stiles had been avoiding him. As Stiles said that he wasn’t keeping anything important from him Scott’s expression turned thoughtful. He wasn’t sure he believed that but he knew that he just had to trust that Stiles wasn’t just telling him what he wanted to hear. As Stiles asked if anyone had ever told him that he worried too much a half smile tugged at the corner of Scott’s mouth. “You tell me that constantly but you know it never changes anything,” he teased. After everything that had happened he wanted to make sure that the people that he cared about that were left were safe because the truth was that Scott didn’t know what he would do if he lost anyone else. He was still learning how to be an Alpha and there seemed to be more about the supernatural world being revealed all the time so he knew that if he and his friends didn’t stick together then they just didn’t stand a chance. Finally Stiles revealed what was going on and Scott’s expression turned thoughtful for a moment. “To be honest I’ve been wondering that myself but with everything else that has been going on I haven’t been able to give it much thought,” he admitted. It had seemed too easy almost and that didn’t sit well with him. “So that’s what you’ve been looking into this whole time?” he asked as he looked over at Stiles. “Have you found anything?”STILES STILINSKI

Stiles had lost count of the number of times they’d done this dance over the last couple of years. When it had only been the two of them, when their biggest problem had been getting on to the lacrosse team, it had always been Stiles and Scott against the world. They hadn’t given anybody the room to drive a wedge between them but the moment Peter had sunk his charred fangs into Scott out in the woods, the cracks had started to grow. Those cracks had mended every single time but it seemed that inevitably they’d appear again, sometimes under a battering from others, sometimes they put them there themselves. Now the excuse that they were saving the other from harm got used far too often. When he’d been on the other end of it he’d hated it but that hadn’t stopped him from using it himself. This time he was using it to save all of them from harm – Scott, Lydia, Malia, his dad, even Danny. There just hadn’t seemed to be any other way when they’d finally managed to get that thing driven out of Allison. Stiles knew he could be impulsive, driven to the point where he could make his dad tear his hair out with his inability to let things go, but in this case it hadn’t been about either of those things. This choice had been calculated, thought through until his chest had ached with the thought of another one of them dying. It wouldn’t be because of this time, it would be in spite of him, not that it made it feel any better. This was a hunt he needed to go on alone, to stop another friend being bitten and turned, to stop Lydia from harkening another death with a scream, to avoid having to go to another funeral.
People never listened, never did what you wanted. He hadn’t told Scott he was pulling a Houdini but it had to have been obvious enough to his buddy that he’d come looking for him. Stiles worked at his lower lip as his foot beat out its rhythm on the door frame. The lip pulled free as he managed a momentary smile. ”Head meets brick wall every single time,” he agreed. A decade and a half of friendship and they probably knew each other better than anybody else, including their parents. Scott was always gonna worry about him and hell, he’d never stopped worrying about Scott. That’d been why he hadn’t pulled any of them in to this hunt and … it was also why Scott wasn’t gonna let him just slink off again. Letting the humour disappear in a sigh he finally owned up to what he’d been doing. Scott’s reaction was a little less ‘you freaking dumbass’ than he’d been expecting and a lot more ‘I thought so’. He’d been distracted, with Allison, with the move, with keeping them all together, probably too distracted to push to get in on his hunt until now. Smiling wryly as he dropped his hand, Stiles rolled his eyes at his own behaviour. ”It’s pretty much all I’ve thought about except making sure that my dad doesn’t see the Grill as an excuse to get back on the all bacon diet again,” he managed dryly. ”This town is creep central, it’s gotta be like paradise to that thing.” Rolling back on the seat, legs stretched out precariously, Stiles shoved an arm between the seats and retrieved a map from the back to hold out to Scott. ”Practically every day since we got Allison exorcised. There are signs all over this freaking town but I haven’t been able to tell if it’s that demon yet or something else here. Finding the right one might be like looking for a needle in a haystack.” You couldn’t spit here without hitting something supernatural and having lived in Beacon Hill, that was saying something.

Scott would be the first to admit that his mind had been all over the place lately. Ever since learning that Allison had been brought back only to be possessed by a demon his head had been a mess and the events that had unfolded since hadn’t really helped matters. He and his friends had moved across the country trying to track down the demon so that they could free Allison, they’d had to start over in a new town and at a new school, he’d had the added worry of trying to make sure that his friends didn’t fall apart and he had done everything that he could to hold it together. It had been a lot for the teenager to deal with to say the least and even though they had managed to exorcise the demon from Allison he knew that they weren’t out of the woods just yet. She was still in a coma and while he was hopeful that she would wake up sooner or later he knew that the doctors at the hospital believed her to be a lost cause. Scott refused to give up hope, however, as at the moment it felt like it was all he had to hold onto. He still loved her, that much was obvious to him, but at the end of the day he knew that he would settle for just being her friend if it meant that he got to see her smile again. He and his friends had already lost her once and he knew that they just couldn’t afford to do so again, not after they just got her back again, so staying positive really was the only option. A lot of his time lately had been spent at the hospital when he wasn’t at school or working but now he knew that he needed to make sure that he and Stiles got to spend some time together, to make sure that Stiles didn’t end up getting himself killed if nothing else. “I’ve always had your back and always will,” Scott nodded. No matter what he knew that nothing would be able to come between their friendship and if he was honest that was one of the things that had always kept him going when things got tough. Even before the others came into their lives he had always had Stiles, that was something he had always been able to count on and the truth was he didn’t know what he would do if that ever changed. “This town does seem to draw in the supernatural just like Beacon Hills did,” he agreed. He couldn’t put his finger on it but the town still felt like home to him, though, and he hoped that his friends felt the same. Allison would never be able to return to Beacon Hills considering just how many people knew she had died so starting over was the only option for her and he knew that he couldn’t leave her no matter what and he had a feeling that the others probably felt the same. Taking the map from Stiles, Scott let his gaze sweep over it and he felt a half smile tug at the corner of his mouth as he looked back up at Stiles. “You really have been busy. Where are we investigating first?” he asked, leaving no doubt that he was going with his best friend. STILES STILINSKI

No matter what had happened, how many times he’d ended up pissed at Scott in the last couple of years, or held by the throat by a crazed werewolf, or even had his pride and heart left bloody and raw, Stiles had known that nothing would knock the friendship between him and Scott down for long. It had been there for years before the night he’d led his friend out into the woods, it had been there through Scott’s betrayal of him when he’d kissed Lydia, through the weeks he’d been left trapped in his mind through the nogitsune, it had even made it through Allison’s death. If there was anything that should’ve shaken it Allison’s death was it. Watching through his own eyes from some space in the back of his mind, Stiles had prayed that the sword wound wouldn’t be too much for Scott to heal but had known that if his friend did come through it, the forgiveness would be automatic. Allison’s death was something else though. Again, he hadn’t been the one in control of the mouth that had controlled the oni, his hadn’t been the hand on the sword then but by not being strong enough to fight the nogitsune, by the sheet fact that he was the one it had gone for, his mind a big enough cess pool of fear and anxiety to lure it in, it had felt like his fault anyway. Maybe that was why he’d fought so hard to find the thing that had brought Allison back. Stiles knew none of them would’ve said it but it felt like the blame lay at least partially on his shoulders all the same, some seed of doubt about costing his friend the love of his life remaining rooted in his brain.
Trying to stop the cost from being demanded from Death again, Stiles had gone out there on his own, knowing that the others would be pissed if they found out. Rather than being pissed, Scott was being reassuring, taking up that spot on his left side as he always had. Stiles’ foot was still beating a rapid tattoo against the door frame but he reached out one hand, clapping his friend on the upper arm in gratitude. ”You know I’ve got yours too,” he promised. Which was why he’d gone it alone, venturing out into a town that was more like Beacon Hills than any of them could’ve imagined. Huffing out a laugh, Stiles shook his head. ”It’s got all we had back home and more,” he agreed. ”Demons, werewolves, witches supposedly, vampires … I don’t know how it hasn’t just exploded yet.” A clash between werewolves and hunters had almost been enough to tear Beacon Hills apart and Mystic Falls had more than that. The deeper he dug into its history the scarier it got. It hadn’t stopped him though, hadn’t stopped him from papering his closet walls with what he was finding, string again tying together all the threads he was gathering. Scrambling back upright in his seat as he handed the map over, Stiles smirked. ”Did you honestly expect anything else?” he asked. ”I had time on my hands and a pretty freaking big agenda.” Letting out a breath, Stiles leaned forward and stabbed a finger towards the falls. ”There are some caves out there I wanted to take a look at. There’s always a lot of crap going on down by the falls. I don’t know if demons are into dark, slimy places but if that’s where the breadcrumb trail leads … You ready to poke around in another set of woods?” Stiles’ brows were hitched high as he looked up at his friend. The first time they’d done this Scott had been bitten, he hadn’t been sure if round one out here was something Scott would be prepared for.

One thing Scott had learned pretty quickly since arriving in Mystic Falls was that the town was just as dangerous as Beacon Hills had been, if not even more so. During the time they had been there so far he had seen so much more than he had ever thought possible and he had a feeling that that was just the tip of the iceberg. He couldn’t explain it but ever since arriving in the town he’d had a strange feeling about the place and it was enough to make him think that there was much more there than they had seen in Beacon Hills. Even though he knew the dangers, he also couldn’t deny that the town felt like home. Not a day went by when he didn’t find himself wondering whether moving the whole gang there was a mistake but they had managed to free Allison from the demon and they all had the chance to start over so he knew that it wasn’t all bad. There was no way Allison could have returned with them to Beacon Hills even if she had wanted to anyway, news of her death had spread around the town when it had happened and it would have meant having to answer far too many awkward questions if she was seen around the town again. Leaving her behind just wasn’t an option as far as Scott was concerned, if the rest of the gang had decided to go back to Beacon Hills then he would have understood but as far as he was concerned he was staying put and deep down he was glad that they had all decided to do the same thing. They were in this together and that was just the way that it should be. He had tried dealing with things on his own before in an attempt to protect his friends and it had never worked out well so he had given up trying. They were much stronger when they were together and he was certain that as long as they didn’t let anything come between them then they could handle whatever life in Mystic Falls threw at them, the same way that they had done in Beacon Hills. The fact that Stiles had been avoiding him was something that hadn’t sat well with Scott and he had been determined to get to the bottom of what was going on with his friend. Deep down he knew that he should have known that it was something to do with the demon, Stiles had the same instinct to protect the rest of the group that he had and his friend often didn’t like letting things drop even though there were perhaps times when he should. Scott couldn’t deny that he was a little upset that Stiles hadn’t gone to him with this before but they had all had a lot on their plate so he knew better than to take it personally. The truth was out now anyway so at least now they could do things the right way. He and Stiles had always looked out for one another even before they had become friends with the others and he knew that he wasn’t about to let anything change that. “I know. Just promise me that next time you want to look into something like this you’ll talk to me? I can’t lose you too,” Scott admitted. Stiles had been like a brother to him ever since they were young and he knew that he would feel the same pain that he had when they lost Allison if they ever lost Stiles too. “I’m surprised too but we need to make sure that doesn’t happen,” he nodded. He wasn’t sure how they were going to manage it but he knew that they at least had to try. Vampires were something that he didn’t have a lot of experience with but he knew that they would figure it out, they always did. As Stiles spoke again, Scott felt a half smile tug at the corner of his mouth. “Wouldn’t be the first time. I’m in.” Trying to find a body in the woods in Beacon Hills was exactly how he had ended up becoming a werewolf in the first place but they were better prepared now and he knew that he wasn’t going to let something like that happen again. Guilt wasn’t an entirely unfamiliar emotion for Stiles but it was rare that he felt guilty about something involving Scott. Running his best friend through with the oni’s sword, taking Allison from him, had made it burn inside of him for months but by the time they were following Allison’s trail to Mystic Falls the hottest edge of it had faded. He was making amends for what he’d done when he hadn’t been the controlling the sweaty palms gripping the sword’s hilt. Going out into the woods, trying to find the thing that had brought Allison back to them in a way that had left her suffering, had been his way of doing that, of making up for the crimes that hadn’t really been his. In this case it’d started out as trying to make up for a wrong with a right but it was becoming apparent he’d been fooling himself. Two wrongs definitely hadn’t made a right and the looks on Danny’s, Lydia’s and now Scott’s faces were making that patently obvious. He’d done one of the things he’d chewed all of them out over before and he’d done it without apology. Each of those looks had landed another punch and with that final sucker punch of Scott’s perfected kicked puppy look, Stiles found himself almost cringing. He’d done the kicking this time and the only excuse he had was that he was trying to protect them all. By now it should’ve been obvious that the argument didn’t hold water with anybody, they’d each learned that in turn.
Hey, at least he had hadn’t learned his lesson at the fangs of a vampire, although it had perhaps been a closer call than he’d liked to admit out in those woods. Without Skyler he wouldn’t have been around to be hit with the full power of Scott’s disappointment. The look probably wasn’t even fully intentional but it had worked all the same and now, despite him wanting to bite the promise he knew he might not entirely be able to keep back, Stiles found himself lifting his hand boy scout style. ”I promise, cross my heart. You’re first on my speed dial for demon hunts and Lydia’s second. If I go wandering on this again without her she’ll make me sorry,” he joked, knowing there was more than a little truth in those words. Scott and Lydia had been the ones hollowed out the most by their grief over Allison, two of the three people he cared most about in this world terrified of losing him too. There went that sucker punch again, right in the pit of his stomach. Feeling a little chagrined, Stiles scratched at the back of his head. ”We might not have much choice in the matter. The last time I went looking there was some trouble and that was with me trying to be careful.” Had Scott been by his side he’d have sniffed the vampires out before either one of them went into those ruins. Maybe there was a little relief running through him now that he had other people in this hunt with him. Immediately snapping the map shut, Stiles twisted to toss it into the back of the truck. ”Saddle up hombre,” he said with that same trace of ‘curiosity was about to kill the cat’ in his voice that had gotten into trouble countless times before. Shifting in his seat, Stiles patted the passenger side seat with more than a little fondness. ”I’ve already got a grid marked out. Think you can get that super sniffer of yours going once we get there?” If the rumours were anything to go by then the stench of sulphur would prove an early alarm for the sort of thing that had called Allison home.

Growing up there had only ever been a couple of people in Scott’s life that he could always count on no matter what, namely his mom and Stiles. His dad had been unpredictable and a loose cannon when he drank and he hadn’t found it particularly easy to make friends. He’d had Theo for a while until the boy had moved away but after that the only person he’d had by his side through everything at school was Stiles. Now that had all changed, slowly the group has started to grow and now Scott knew that he wouldn’t have it any other way. It had been a little strange at first letting other people in but he had started with Allison and Lydia and had gone from there. Now he was fortunate enough to be surrounded by friends who were close enough to be called family and he knew that he would do whatever he had to in order to protect them. He hadn’t believed Derek at first when the guy had said that he already had a pack of his own, after all they were a ragtag group of misfits who should have never gotten along, but that was exactly what his friends had become. Ever since Peter bit him he had known that the world was different to the one that he had always thought he had been living in and since then his eyes had been opened to the existence of not just werewolves but banshees, hunters, darachs, demons and countless other creatures too. His life had suddenly become increasingly more dangerous than he had ever thought possible and that wasn’t something that he had wanted to drag his friends into but they had all found it on their own one way or another anyway. It was only when they lost Allison that he had realised just how easily any one of them could be taken and having seen the devastation her death had caused in all of them he knew that he wasn’t going to let anything happen to any of the other people he cared about. Now Allison was free of the demon and they were finally able to get on with their lives but it seemed that there was still something holding them back. Scott couldn’t blame Stiles for the fact that he had been looking into what had happened to the demon afterwards but he didn’t like the fact that his best friend had been doing so alone. Scott had learned the hard way that they were stronger when they were together and Stiles was perhaps the most vulnerable out of all of them so he knew that he wasn’t going to let his friend carry on the way he had been. “You’d better make sure we are,” he nodded, knowing that Lydia didn’t want to lose Stiles anymore than he did. They had lost too many people along the way already, Allison and Aiden had died as had Boyd and Erica and who knew what had happened to Derek so Scott wanted to keep the people that he still had around him safe for as long as possible and he had a feeling that the others felt exactly the same way. “What kind of trouble?” he asked, already wary about what might have happened to Stiles that he had been holding back. Climbing into the jeep just like he had done so many times before, Scott closed the door behind him and buckled up before turning to his friend and studying him carefully for a moment. “I’ll do my best but if you think I’m going to I’m going to sit here with my head hanging out the window trying to catch a scent while you drive, think again,” he warned, knowing exactly what this best friend was like. Stiles could remember all too clearly the day the paediatrician had sat him down with his parents and had explained what the hell was going on in his head. Hadn’t seemed like there was anything really wrong to him then but he’d seen the looks of frustration on his parents’ faces enough to know that something was off. Impulsiveness, disorganisation, restlessness, trouble coping with stress. He’d ticked so many of the boxes then but some ... they hadn’t been him at all. In fact it had been the opposite. Stiles would’ve sworn blind he never had trouble focusing ... in fact it was the opposite, even with the help of the Adderall he’d been focusing laser sharp on things. The only issue was that it usually wasn’t what he was meant to concentrate on. Hours spent researching the history of circumcision, the blinkered focus on werewolves when Scott had sworn blind that it couldn’t have been one that had bitten him, the near obsession he’d shown when his screwed up brain had allowed a homicidal nogitsune spirit to take up residence in his head and given it the opportunity to kill Allison. What had happened that night had plagued his brain for months after they’d finally gotten the damn thing out of him. Just when the guilt had finally started to fade a little Allison had been returned to them with the demon inside of her. There was no tearing it out of her like a chest-burster, no way of poisoning it that they’d been able to find or get to work. They’d blindly raced after her until the bloody path it had carved had led to Mystic Falls. Finally, with the help of some hunters, they’d driven the demon from her but it hadn’t solved everything, hadn’t actually killed the thing. Laser like focus for the win. It had kicked in again, driving him to isolate himself while he’d spent every spare damn minute trying to make certain they were safe.
Of course, mea culpa, now he knew that his focus had been slightly out yet again. In trying to do the right thing he’d done the absolute opposite and an ‘I’m sorry’ was going to get him too far. Stiles knew he’d have to risk his friends lives again, let them risk their own lives, rather than just risk his own. Brows rising, Stiles dropped his hand and tapped his chest. ”Don’t I always keep my word?” he asked, fluttering his lashes faintly. He tried but always, that might’ve been a bit of a stretch. The numbers would be there though and he would call, would involve them in this hunt. After all they had as much a right to destroy the thing that had tormented Allison as he did. Together they might have more luck than he’d had on his own and if he happened to run into vampires again then he’d have people to watch his back. Stiles grimaced, his fingers working their way up to the top of his head as he mentally kicked himself for saying too much. ”Maybe some vampire kind of trouble in the woods,” he said in a pained tone. ”And outside the sheriff’s station when I was dropping dinner off to my dad. It’s all good though, they’re both dead.” Thanks to Skyler and his mysterious Buffy-a-like hunter. He tried not to cringe too much as he tried to start the engine. There was a momentary cough and growl, then a moment’s silence before Roscoe’s engine choked its way to life. Stiles shot a sideways glance at his friend, mocking a little hurt as he crawled out of the school parking lot. ”Like I’d force you to Fido it up in here,” he muttered, pouting for a heartbeat before he looked back at the road. ”I was gonna wait til we got out to the spot I wanted to search and then ask you to do it. You can sniff that stuff out right? Sulphur?” That was something that all of the pages he’d managed to find on the net had agreed on. Demons practically reeked of the stuff.

Stiles was the one person that Scott had always been able to count on no matter what and as the two of them got older that hadn’t changed. Stiles had been there to support him through everything that had happened with his parents when they were both too young to really know what was going on themselves and Scott had tried to return the favour by being there for Stiles after his mom died. Growing up they had always looked out for each other and he knew that was as it should be. He wasn’t sure what he would have done without Stiles during that time and he knew that he would have been lost without his best friend after he became a werewolf as well. Scott hadn’t known what was going on when he was bitten by Peter but he had realised quite quickly that something was different and it had been a relief to know that he’d had one person there that he could talk to and who would understand just what was going on. They had stuck together through everything that life had thrown at them but lately Stiles had been keeping his distance and Scott knew that he couldn’t let that go on any longer. He had learned the hard way that they were that much more vulnerable when they were apart than when they were together and he knew that the last thing they needed was to end up losing anyone else especially after everything that they had just been through to get Allison back. Now he was determined to make sure that Stiles didn’t continue going it alone and that meant tagging along while he continued to investigate what had happened to the demon that had been possessing Allison. They had no idea where it had gone or what it was up to now but something told Scott that it wouldn’t be anything good. Learning about demons had opened him up to a side of the supernatural world that he hadn’t even known existed and he couldn’t help but wonder what else was out there but he knew that they would all find out sooner or later. For now he knew that he would just settle for hanging out with his friend and as Stiles spoke, Scott shook his head. “No, you don’t,” he said simply. He knew that Stiles always had good intentions but he didn’t always stick to his word and that was something that drove him a little crazy sometimes but at least this time he could do something about it. He wasn’t sure if Stiles would keep his promise and call one of them when he wanted to do some investigating again but he knew that only time would tell. “Vampires? Dead?” he asked, knowing that there had to be a lot more to the story than that. “I think you’d better fill me in as we go,” he said as he looked over at his friend. He hadn’t known that vampires were real but given everything else he knew about the supernatural world he knew that he shouldn’t really have been surprised either. As Stiles spoke again, Scott rolled his eyes. He drew the line at hanging out of the window while trying to pick up a scent but he knew that he would at least do his best once they had stopped. “I should be able to, yeah,” he nodded. It wasn’t something that he had tried before but it should be easy enough so he knew that it shouldn’t be a problem. STILES STILINSKI

For as long as Stiles could remember Scott had been the one person he’d been able to tell everything. His dad was there for the major stuff of course and Stiles did keep his dad up to date on all of that, but with Scott … there’d been few things that were taboo. They’d gone through all the usual teenaged milestones together, their first crushes, every painful little milestone of puberty. They’d both lost parents and Stiles wasn’t under the impression that Scott’s dad leaving was much less agonising than his own mom’s death. Scott had been the first person he’d told about his crush on Lydia and his best friend had been the one person who’d heard about every misery or moment of happiness wrapped up strawberry blonde perfection since then. When he’d finally been able to talk about what he thought had been going on in his head, Scott had been on the other end of the conversation. Yet when it had come to trying to stop the thing that had been tooling around in Allison’s head, Stiles had kept his mouth shut on purpose. All promises of never lying, never keeping anything from each other had disappeared like the black smoke that had been ejected from Allison. He’d never started out meaning for that to happen but Stiles knew that the road to hell was pretty much paved with his good intentions at this point and at some point, he was going to be following that path right to the place where he’d get his ass roasted for eternity. Screwing up too many times despite those intentions had guaranteed him a spot there.
And damn didn’t Scott know it. Stiles didn’t even bother apologising at his friend’s retort to what had been a rhetorical question. He did grimace faintly though, staring over at the school as he raised a hand to scratch at the back of his neck. ”Don’t I always try to keep my word?” he said, adjusting his statement of only moments before. 99.9 percent of the time he honestly did, there was just that point one percent where he did something on purpose out of hurt or out of that idealistic intention of protecting those around him from any more pain. Not filling his friends in on his near miss with the two vampires out in the woods had been a part of one of those foolish attempts. Nodding, Stiles dropped his hand back into his lap and huffed out a breath. ”Two vampires,” he clarified. ”I had a little help getting out of a scrape with them when I was looking for the demon out in the woods and then when they decided to try and get another crack at the dinner they missed out on, I had a little help again.” That was it in the simplest terms but Stiles knew that Scott was going to want more detail. That would come on route, they had the time, especially if Scott wasn’t going to play pet blood hound here. Stiles’ mouth curved into a grin as he turned onto the street that would lead all the way out towards the falls. ”Good boy,” he crooned, reaching out to clap a hand on his friend’s shoulder. ”Everything I’ve read so far says they should practically reek of the stuff. I figure if that thing’s still out there then it has to be stinking up the place by now. You been out in these woods yet?” It was a roundabout way of asking if Scott had found anything out there. Undoubtedly if he had he’d have said something about it by now. Scott wasn’t the one covering up what he’d been up to after all.
