Some of the old people had pulled him aside after his second time at the church, glowing about how nice it was to see the younger generation at church. They muttered between themselves that the average age of the church goers in Mystic Falls was eighty. They were right though. The crowd was full of those drawing close to their last day, praying they would make it to the holy land above. Some of them would become hung up on his accent, especially the elderly women. He’d managed to slip away from them after what felt like hours, but they would still wave at him whenever he walked into the church. He wasn’t a weekly attender though, more of a monthly visitor. Popping in whenever he felt like it, knowing that sort of behaviour wasn’t appreciated by the man upstairs. A part of him was still hoping to mend his broken relationship with God. Sometimes he’d cup his hands together and pray for Rose because he felt like he was running out of options with her. God had let him down when it came to Fiona, but maybe he’d saved Rose, seeing there was a heart buried deep inside her chest. Iain saw past whatever persona Rose was trying to display, he knew there was a good person beneath it all. It wasn’t as if he was the only young person in the church though. He spotted Krista in a pew every single time, but always alone. He couldn’t even take a seat next to her because he’d gone ahead and wiped her memory. The silver ladies might not have loved him if they knew he survived on human blood and had been alive for centuries. The truth could have easily slipped out of Krista’s mouth. She didn’t think hestatie last time before announcing her boyfriend was a vampire. She didn’t even bother to lower her voice to make the announcement, which filled Iain with mild anxiety. It was like she had no idea hunters existed. Nonetheless, he drifted over to her one Sunday morning. Seeing her sitting there alone sparked a sense of sadness in him. “Morning.” He slipped into the vacant seat next to her in the pew. “I’m Iain. We met a while ago but… twas brief.” It was a weak explanation but one humans tended to accept, blaming their brains for forgetting. “Still haven't managed tae convince yer boyfriend tae join th' church?”KRISTA MAY

━ i can't get you out of my head ━ KRISTA LIKED CHURCH ON SUNDAYS, AND not just in the normal way that she figured all good Christians did. It was a constant in her schedule━a routine━and she could remember almost every single Sunday at a time when her memory seemed spotty.
This week's service was about showing kindness to your neighbour. Well, not just kindness, but patience, respect, and humility. Also, there was a side note about volunteering, which the Pastor shamelessly related to his request that people help out at some upcoming event at the grill. It was in a joking tone, at least, and Krista laughed along with the rest of the congregation.
It was nice, but it didn’t feel directly related to her. Sometimes, Krista would be so elated and astonished at how relatable the sermons were, as if the Pastor had written them just for her. Like God was sending her a message. Maybe He still was, just more of a comment about the past rather than advice or answers.
She’d been thinking a lot about that stranger she met at school, and how weird the whole thing was. And the necklace… Krista couldn’t figure it out. Was she charitable enough with him? Patient, kind? Would she see him again?
Krista wasn’t sure whether she wanted to or not. She was surprised that she’d walked away and hadn’t felt scared even once. She was sure she didn’t remember him, but…
Krista frowned and rubbed her neck idly, grazing her nails over her skin as if by muscle memory, seeing if they’d catch on anything. They didn’t.
After the service, she prayed for the stranger, Mal. She asked God to watch over him and help him, and to help her, too, if there was something she was missing.
Just as Krista pulled away from where her forearms rested on the pew in front of her, she was joined by someone else. She’d seen him once or twice, scattered throughout services (he stuck out just like she did) but had never spoken to him. Or… so she thought.
“We did?” Krista frowned, feeling bad all over again. “Seems t’be lots of that goin’ ‘round lately. I’m sorry, I don’t remember meetin’ you.” She reached up and touched the necklace over her shirt. It wasn’t on display, but she hadn’t worked up the nerve to take it off yet. Maybe she did have to pray for herself. Clearly, she’d bumped her head or something. Really hard. She felt so bad for forgetting Mal.
But… maybe Iain was actually mistaking her for someone else. People always said you had, like, seven twins in the world or something, right? Maybe one of hers had moved to Mystic Falls.
“Boyfriend?” Krista began to blush, and she giggled bashfully. “I don’t have a boyfriend; never have.” She was gonna say she wasn’t allowed, but that wasn’t totally true anymore, especially ‘cause she was at school now. Krista just…. Never got to have one. Boys didn’t ever like her back. “I dunno, maybe you got me mixed up with someone. My name’s Krista.” She sounded her name out slowly, as if his accent meant he couldn’t understand English.

He thought by isolating himself away from the world it would bring him joy, telling himself he was designed to be far away from people. All he needed was himself. It was fine for the first few years, but being alone wasn’t what he needed and he didn’t realise how much he craved a connection until Rose arrived. It sparked something up inside of him, which died down immediately when she left. Next minute he found himself halfway across the world chasing after a humanity free vampire, who couldn’t give a shit about him. Was he a fool? He started to think he was until he saw her snap. The floodgates opened and she could no longer keep them shut, after managing to do so for a decade. It filled him with sorrow watching her, but he didn’t regret it. She could go about the rest of her days hating him for forcing her to feel again if necessary. One day Rose would be happy. Truly happy. That’s what he told himself as the service came to an end. Although he knew it was ironic praying for someone who had sinned to the full extent. Iain broke into a small smile as he shrugged. “Nae worries… we all forget sometimes.” He’d never enjoyed delving into a human’s minds and forcing them to forget something, but sometimes it was needed. It was certainly needed with Krista and her loose tongue. It was strange to see someone so excited to meet a vampire, usually it was the complete opposite. Fear and dread. But it was like Krista didn’t even comprehend that Iain could kill her. His brows twitched for a moment as he went to frown. Last time they met she was gushing about him, like he was the best man she’d ever met but now she was denying he existed. For a moment it had him doubting his own memory, until she introduced herself. “Er... Are ye daein' that thing girls dae when they pretend thair ex doesn't exist?”KRISTA MAY

━ i can't get you out of my head ━ YEAH, WE ALL FORGET SOMETIMES. BUT usually you didn’t wipe whole people from your mind! Seriously, was this super-duper-early onset dementia, or was somethin’ in the water? Did she forget them slowly without realizin’? Would she forget Kitty next? River? Their parents? Oh man, she was losin’ it.
He didn’t seem offended by it though, or that upset━not like Mal did. He didn’t believe her at first, kept tellin’ Krista she should drop the act or whatever, until he finally believe that it wasn’t an act! Iain simply re-introduced himself when he first came over, which prob’ly meant he was gonna be okay if Krista didn’t know who he was.
But then he was frowning, and, shoot, yeah, she’d done something wrong. She couldn’t remember his name, but the boyfriend thing got him? Krista didn’t really understand it, though she figured most people would’ve remembered something like that. Y’know, if she had a boyfriend. But she didn’t. So, what the heck.
“No…?” Krista frowned back. It took her a minute to understand what he was saying, and then her own brows furrowed as she rapidly grew upset. “I’ve never had a boyfriend.” She repeated, a little more stern this time. “Even if I did, I wouldn’t forget him… ‘cause he’d prob’ly be my husband━y’know, eventually━and why would I wanna forget my husband?” She huffed out a breath, glancing around like she was gonna find the hidden cameras this time. But Kitty confirmed she’d never done anything like this to “prank” Krista, so, obviously she wasn’t gonna find nothin’. “This keeps happenin’...” She trailed off with a big sigh and touched her necklace over her shirt again,
“Um… did I… like, maybe mention his name?” If Iain told her Mal’s name, then… maybe everything would make a bit more sense. Okay, it’d make less sense, but at least she’d have another piece of the puzzle.

Iain’s eyes narrowed for a moment as he listened to Krista, trying to gauge whether or not she was lying. No, she wasn’t, which left him feeling even more confused. Maybe she was doing the other thing, where girls pretend they have boyfriends to impress people. The more time he spent on earth the less he understood women. Sabrina was a simple woman, easy to read and open with her feelings. Fiona was largely the same, if not even more open than Sabrina. Nowadays, women seem complicated. He blamed technology for that though, introducing them to things such as gaslighting and catfishing. These were all words he’d read about online, but none of them made sense. Like, why would someone purposely use fake pictures to lure in someone? It was beyond him. There was a twitch in the corner of his lips as Krista said that if she did have a boyfriend he’d be her husband one day. It was nice to see young people still wanting to get married, especially after he’d recently read online about how marriage was a waste of money. Again, it was just another reason for Iain to hate the stuff that was posted online. Marriage wasn’t a waste of money, it was a beautiful act where two people devoted their lives to one another. It didn’t take long until a theory fell into place about Krista. He turned his body towards Krista, his eyes locked on hers, “Krista. Stay calm 'n' open yer mind tae me.” He placed his hand on her shoulder, closing his eyes as he did so. There were no traces of a boyfriend in her memories, but there were gaps. Things that didn’t thread together properly. He opened his eyes, pulling his hand away from her shoulder. He sighed softly, trying to think of a way of telling Krista she’d been compelled to forget her boyfriend. “This is gonna sound a little weird, but ah think someone’s messed wi’ yer mind ‘n’ convinced ya tae forget aboot yer boyfriend… that’s mah theory anyway.” It wasn’t something Iain was prepared to get involved with either, but it was only fair Krista had some clue what had happened to her. ━ i can't get you out of my head ━ IAIN DIDN’T ANSWER ANY OF HER QUESTIONS; HE didn’t even tell her whether or not this alleged boyfriend had a name! Instead, he looked Krista right in the eyes and asked her to ‘open her mind,’ and Krista wasn’t gonna, like, argue, but this was kinda weird. ‘Specially in a Church. Was this sacrilegious? She woulda said somethin’ about it if she didn’t automatically bend to his will, unmoving as she stared at Iain, letting him go into her mind or… something.
While he did that, she thought about everything she’d been through since she got to Mystic Falls. Coming back to the motel room, her parents not believing her about… something, running away to Mystic Falls, enrolling in school, meeting Kitty… it was all pretty normal stuff. Lots of it was kinda weird when she thought about it too hard, but that’s why she didn’t bother!
Finally, Iain was payin’ attention to her again, and Krista pulled herself out of the swirl of thoughts and smiled up at him. “Huh?” She said after he explained, her polite expression dropping, brows furrowing, mouth hanging open. Okay, yeah, his accent was a little hard to understand, but that wasn’t why she’d said it. It seemed… crazy! Like, how could someone have messed with her mind?
“H.. how?!” Krista squeaked, “Convinced me to forget about my boyfriend? Why?! Why would somebody do somethin’ like that?” Especially with the man she was gonna marry━however he was. Wait, was it Mal? How would she ever know if Iain didn’t tell her his name?! “Did I tell you his name?” She asked again, a little more whine this time, desperate to have all the answers she was missing.

He couldn’t even decide what was the right thing to do in the situation. Leave her be believing she didn’t have a boyfriend? Or tell her someone might be messing with her memories? He didn’t know Krista all that well, but he could tell she was a good person with a kind heart. Someone who deserved to know the truth. Naturally the questions spilled out of her but he could only answer one of them. How? He couldn’t tell her though. “A dinnae know why, sorry… maybe some kind o' hypnotherapy.” It was the best answer he could give to her, the most reasonable one too. Even though he was the one to compel her to forget their conversation it felt like he had also forgotten it, bar the main thing which was Krista knew vampires existed because her boyfriend was one. “Nah.” He was almost certain he would have made an effort to remember the boyfriends name, just in case, but his mind had been so preoccupied with Rose that there was a chance it slipped into the abyss. “Ah suggest ye reach oot tae some close pals or family see if they can help ye remember.” He’d never heard of a human suddenly being able to remember whatever they were compelled to forget, but hey, Krista might be the first. Unlikely, but maybe. A'm sorry ah cannae help ye more.” KRISTA MAY - wanna wrap with yours?

━ i can't get you out of my head ━ HYPNOTHERAPY? NOW THAT WAS sacriligeous, right? It hadta be. Okay, maybe not, but still━Krista didn’t remember ever being put under hypnosis! Well, that was the point, wasn’t it? And the problem. Krista whimpered helplessly, staring downwards with wide eyes as a million different scenarios ran through her mind. But was she going to forget about all these scenarios?! Did they even matter?! Oh my gosh!
But ugh, of course he didn’t know her boyfriend’s name, so she could never figure out whether it was Mal or not. But Kitty would’ve known about him, right? And she’d asked Kitty, so maybe he wasn’t. Maybe Krista would never know!
“I guess.” Krista sighed. Apparently, the close friends thing hadn’t worked, but Mal was her best friend━supposedly━and she hadn’t remembered him at all. So, what was she gonna do?!
Krista frowned up at Iain and nodded slowly. “It’s okay.” She puffed dramatically, then lifted her arms and slung them around herself. “I’ll… figure it out. Maybe.” Prob’ly not. “It was nice… re-meetin’ ya. Sorry I forgot. I’ll seeya ‘round church again.” She smiled sadly, then walked past Iain to the exit, wondering how the heck she was gonna get through this when she seemed to be forgetting everything.
