This was what it had all been leading up to – actually being in a hospital, getting to be near the patients, working on them if you got lucky enough. He’d been tying himself up in knots about it in advance of the placement, going over procedures in his head like he’d once done drills in his head, neat little bits of information that would slot together now. It was gonna be a different thing when those ambulance bay doors opened and something actually happened.
Bram’s face heated as he caught himself daydreaming about multiple-person traumas. He straightened up, pulling the tray of samples closer to himself at the admit desk. One of the nurses had nudged it towards him as she’d left to do something in the drug locker, calling it a new learning experience for him. Maybe it was, but this wasn’t what he was likely to be doing once he actually qualified. It was scut work, handled by nurses and the medical students they palmed it off on when they thought the punishment had been earned, just like now. Maybe if he kept looking at the doors like a puppy eager for a treat they’d keep it up too.
Pushing aside the thought that was probably putting some sort of bad karma out into a town that definitely didn’t need it – after all the weird things that had happened lately, he definitely didn’t need it either – Bram dragged the tray closer. He pulled the first sample vial, avoiding thinking about what the amber liquid in it was, and started tapping the test orders into the tablet the nurse had pushed into his hands. It only took a minute, but by the time he’d made it through the first row he was feeling antsy again. The lulls were a part of the job, he was just gonna have to get used to that. It didn’t mean he had to like it though.
After the second row he was practically squirming in his seat like an impatient little kid. He was better than this, he never would’ve been able to actually study his way back through college if he wasn’t. A lot of stuff had happened since med school had started and most of it was still tying him up in knots. With fingers wrapped around one of the sample tubes, he stared down at the printed label on it without really seeing it. All it took was a faint flicker of the memory of what he’d seen out in the woods to send that shiver down his spine again.
The vial dropped out of his grip, rolling across the countertop as he scrambled for it. If it fell off the other side and smashed he was definitely gonna be the one cleaning it up and sent in to get a fresh sample from a seriously pissed off patient. Bram bit back a groan as he leaned into the desk, putting pressure on his knees, throwing himself across the countertop. Just in time. He snatched the vial up, staying them for a moment like it might squirm back out of his grip.
As he straightened up he caught sight of Evan walking out of one of the exam rooms. In a class of dozens it had been a little easier to kinda get lost in crowd, meaning that he hadn’t really been friends with Milena’s brother before they all thought she’d been killed. After he’d offered his condolences, but he hadn’t pushed for some sort of connection – it definitely hadn’t been the time then. Every had flipped when Milena had come back though and with things getting a little more serious between them … yeah, now was definitely the time.
One corner of Bram’s mouth ticked up. He wagged the sample carefully in the air, not looking to screw up his miraculous save. ”Little sucker got away from me. Who knew they were that slippery.” And still that gross. Bram set it back in the rack, pumping some of the hand gel from the bottle standing onto the counter into his palms. He was glad he wasn’t the one having to open them all up to perform the tests. ”Did you get something at least a little exciting to work on?” Just about anything would’ve been more exciting than logging the urine tests. Like watching paint dry or counting floor tiles.

Evan had known for a long time that he’d wanted to become a doctor so doing his degree at Whitmore and then staying on for Med School really had seemed perfect. He’d made some friends among his classmates and he had others from his degree who were still around but the truth was that after his parents died he had pushed a lot of people away. He hadn’t known how to deal with losing his whole family in one day but finding out that Milena was alive after all had given him a sense of renewed hope in a way. Before that he had felt like he was all alone in the world but finding out that his sister was still alive after all and that she had powers that neither of them had even known about had been a lot to take in but it was definitely worth it. Now he knew that he wasn’t completely on his own it was a huge relief but he and Milena still had their own lives and he knew that they always would. Evan didn’t really know how to tell her what was going on with him because the truth was that he didn’t really understand it himself yet. Something strange was going on but he knew that if he told anyone they would think he was crazy so he had been keeping it to himself for the time being while he tried to figure it out. Sooner or later he knew that he was going to have to talk to someone but for the time being at least he knew that he wanted to give it some time and focusing on getting through the rest of his time at Med School was definitely a good distraction. It was strange to think that soon enough Med School would be over and then he would be a fully fledged doctor and it was also a little scary but he knew that he would be fine when that time came, he had to be. For now he was just taking it one day at a time and that day he had been assigned to do the rounds that morning for an attending who was tied up with an emergency and that afternoon he would be spending some time in the children’s ward so he could check in on some of the kids. Every day was different and that was definitely a good thing as far as Evan was concerned. He liked the variety and it was helping him figure out where he wanted to specialise so it definitely wasn’t a bad thing. Emerging from the exam room, Evan looked up as a voice spoke to him. Bram was in his class so they knew of each other but they didn’t know each other that well. “Looks like it was a close one, I bet you’re glad you didn’t have to ask the patient for another sample,” he chuckled. As Bram asked if he got something at least a little exciting to work on, Evan nodded. “Yeah, I did. I’m doing rounds this morning and then later I’ll be heading up to the children’s ward,” he explained. “I don’t envy you having that job, I had it last week and it was awful,” he admitted. He had hated every minute of it but he knew it needed to be done. “Are you stuck here all day or have you got something else lined up?”BRAM MCCABE

How was it that he could be so graceful on the ice and yet feel like such a klutz the moment he walked into the hospital? Nerves? Maybe. Bram hadn’t wanted to question that too far. If you focused on how anxious you were about something it only seemed to increase the feeling. He’d never been one of those guys who could face up to those fears and just shrug them off because he’d shone a light on them. Nope, he’d done better when he’d pushed it all out of his head. You couldn’t stand in the middle of a burning forest and even open the door to your fear an inch. If he’d hesitated that day then there’d have been three deaths added to the tally of those who had been lost during that awful summer. Acting on instinct he’d pulled the two firefighters into the water and knowing that there was no way they could protect themselves, he’d put himself between them and the fire. Even now when he thought about it Bram felt sick to his stomach.
It wasn’t the fire that bubbled in his memory lately though, it was something equally as terrifying that left him feeling sick as he tapped the orders into the tablet. Bram’s face burned faintly with embarrassment as he waggled the sample vial in the air at Evan like he could explain why he was rattled – if he admitted what was actually going on he’d have been taken upstairs to the psychiatric ward for his own good. He wanted to take a rotation there at some point, but there was no way on earth he wanted to be admitted, even if it would’ve been for his own good.
Bram huffed out something approaching a laugh as he cleaned his hands – nothing had spilled but you never could be good careful about it. ”Definitely. I think the woman who gave it would be glad she didn’t have to do that again too.” That sort of thing was awkward at the best of times. He knew what it was like, had definitely spent too much time with doctors prodding and poking and putting him through just about every test they could possibly think of. In the end he’d come out of it still able to walk, about to skate sometimes too. He hadn’t thought of it that way at the time, but he was going to call that a win.
The way he figured it, all that time spent trying to rehab the injury that had pushed him towards medicine in the first place had influenced where he was going to end up working when he qualified. It was a bonus that he had the size and strength that usually came in handy when it came to orthopaedics. ”Paediatrics is definitely more exciting than this,” Bram puffed. ”I was assigned to the ER for the day, but so far there hasn’t been anything more dramatic than a guy who managed to cut his thumb slicing bagels.” And the three stitches he’d put in that wound had felt like they were over before he’d even started.
Shaking his head, Bram dropped back onto the stool he’d been occupying for the last hour. People at the hospital had warned him about even thinking about the place being quiet, but when you were desperate to learn everything you possible could, your brain tended to wander that way. ”Next week I finally get to head to ortho. That’s what I’ve been waiting for from the start. Is paeds what you’re aiming for long term?” Most people already had their route planned out before they started med school.

Working at the hospital was a lot but the truth was that it was all Evan had wanted to do for a long time. He had always known that he wanted to help people and as far as he was concerned this was the best way he knew how to do that. The tasks he was given to do weren’t always that exciting but it was all good training as his supervisors always liked to tell him and he knew that they were right. Not a day went by when Evan didn’t wish that his parents were around to see it but he knew that they were proud of him anyway. They had always wanted him to follow his dreams and that’s what he was doing so he knew that he just had to keep going no matter how difficult it might be sometimes. There were a few doctors he had learned to stay away from as much as he could, some seemed to dislike having to tutor junior doctors and Evan was tired of being talked down to but there were others who were good people and he had found a few he knew that he could turn to when he needed to. That day he had been left to his own devices somewhat checking on some patients and doing the rounds but he knew that he would be meeting up with Dr Leroux later and going through everything with him. Dr Leroux definitely fell into the category of doctors that he could count on so he knew that everything would be fine and being able to spend some time with the children being treated upstairs always made life interesting. He hated that they were all in there for different reasons but he tried to cheer them up as much as he could and he knew that the other doctors and nurses did the same. If he was honest he was glad he wasn’t the only new doctor working at the hospital, he and Bram had gone through med school together and now they were doing their residencies together as well so it was good knowing that he wasn’t alone. “I bet. It’s a real struggle for them sometimes,” he chuckled. Evan knew that it would have been beyond awkward if Bram had had to go back to the woman and ask for another sample so he was glad that he didn’t have to worry about that. “I guess it could be worse, at least he didn’t cut his thumb off,” Evan grinned. “I’m sure it will pick up soon, the ER normally tends to get pretty busy so you’ll probably be rushed off your feet before you know it,” he offered. That was always the way of it, it seemed. There were usually quiet moments sometimes but then the next they could be run off their feet. It might not have been that exciting for Bram yet that day but Evan had a feeling it wouldn’t stay that way for too long. “That’s good. You haven’t found anything that has swayed you yet then?” he asked. “It’s still something I’m thinking about but I actually like working in the ER as well,” Evan admitted. “I’m not sure which one will win out yet.”BRAM MCCABE

It was the simple mistakes and accidents that you could get away with, but they were also the ones that would follow you around for the rest of your career. Some guys on the ice hockey team had screwed things up bac when they were like five and still carried the nicknames, hearing the stories every time they got together with people from back home (he’d gone through all of that too). At the hospital it was no different. If he’d spilled the samples he’d have been known as the guy who couldn’t hold his pee – literally. He was meant to be way more graceful than this – all those years training on the ice should’ve made sure of that. Bram gave the rack a little tug, just to make sure it was away from the edge. That definitely wasn’t how his day was going.
Grimacing faintly as Evan chuckled, he gave it a second tug. He guessed unless you were pregnant it was difficult to go on command. There was no other way of testing some of the things they had to though. ”It would’ve been a struggle for me too,” he muttered. ”Let’s just thank the universe for a lucky save.” And for the rest of his shift to be better than it had been so far.
He hadn’t come int the job expecting for it all to be wild traumas and excitement, but if he was being honest, he’d struggled a little with the absolutely dead silent moments. They were always bound to come to an end at some point, it was the wait for it that left him antsy though. Bram snorted, shaking his head. ”It would’ve been worse for him, that would’ve been awesome for me. A little more ortho practice, and maybe some time with the vascular surgeons too.” Who absolutely wouldn’t have let him sew the thumb back on if that happened. Bram pressed his hands together, pretending to shoot off a plea for what Evan was describing. ”If only. You’re probably not meant to hope for that stuff, but right now it sounds pretty good to me.” He looked at the ambulance bay doors almost wistfully before he forced himself to look away. You definitely weren’t supposed to ask fate to slap you down like that in this job.
So far he’d had a little taste of a lot of things in the ER and for a couple of days had seriously considered going into trauma, but eventually he’d realised he wouldn’t have been entirely happy there. Plans could always change, but for as long as he’d wanted to go into medicine, he’d wanted to be an orthopaedic surgeon, helping to fix in others what had been irreparable in him. ”Not yet,” he admitted, shaking his head. ”I’ve wanted to be an ortho for years – personal experience.” Bram grinned, knowing that there was a chance that Evan would make the choice he hadn’t. ”This place has gotten to you,” he murmured. ”Maybe there’s room to combine the two. You could focus on paediatric patients down here? There’s always some kid in with a problem.” Quite a few of those problems were the sort of thing that would break your heart if you focused on that side of things for too long.

Becoming a doctor was all that Evan had wanted to do for as long as he could remember. He had always known that it was going to be a lot of work but he had also known that it would be worth it to be able to help people. Right now he knew that he still had a long way to go but the truth was that he was still enjoying not quite every minute of it but definitely most of it. He wasn’t sure what would happen after they finished Med School, he and Bram could easily end up at different hospitals but Evan had applied for a residency in Mystic Falls and he wouldn’t be surprised if Bram had done the same. It wasn’t guaranteed that either of them would get a job there but it was where they were doing their training and Evan liked to think that that might play a part. “Hopefully the rest of your shift won’t be so bad,” Evan nodded. It really had been a close call but Bram had managed to save a lot of awkwardness and it was something Evan was pretty sure the patient would appreciate at least. As Bram said it would have been awesome for him if his patient had cut his thumb off, Evan couldn’t help but laugh. “That’s what I like to hear, nothing like wishing bodily harm on your patient to further your training,” he chuckled. It would have been interesting, that was for sure, but Evan knew that it was always better to try and avoid that kind of thing happening. Glancing over in the direction of the ambulance bay doors, Evan shook his head in amusement. “You know what they say, watched doors never open,” he teased. “You’ve probably gone and jinxed it now, I bet you’ll be rushed off your feet for the rest of your shift and you’ll end up wishing things calmed down again,” he grinned. Truth be told that had happened to him a couple of times and he had certainly learned his lesson. One of the best things about working in a hospital like this was the chance to try out different fields of medicine. It wasn’t always easy knowing what you wanted to specialise in without actually having some hands on experience and during his time there Evan had helped out in a few different areas but there was something special about working with kids although he was also starting to feel himself being pulled towards the ER as well. “What happened?” Evan asked as Bram said he had personal experience that had made him want to go into orthopaedics. “I think you’re right,” he chuckled as Bram said the place had gotten to him. “That’s true. I might look into it and see what I can do. I know sometimes it’s possible to split time between the two so maybe that will be the answer.”BRAM MCCABE

Hoping for a little luck when you were a doc was definitely different to doing it on the ice. Foolishly, maybe, he’d always clung on to the rituals that were meant to keep your lucky streak going. The same socks for every big game, the scrap of his first hockey jersey that he kept close to his heart, a big steaming bowl of brown sugar porridge an hour before he went out onto the ice. It was all meant to add up to a charmed career, but when the crash had come, Bram had soon learned that there wasn’t any way of charming your way through life. Sometimes things weren’t gonna go your way, no matter how much preparation you did. You had to take the punches, had to force yourself to get up again, no matter how many times you fell. Practice would you see some of the pit falls, knowledge would let you pull yourself out if you happened to land in any of them. It was the same way in the hospital. You couldn’t always stop the worst from happening, you just had to try and make sure you were ready when it did.
Huffing out a breath, Bram held up crossed fingers. They weren’t gonna solve anything anyway, but he might as well give it a try. ”From your lips to God’s ears,” he said with a grin. That probably meant stuff was only going to get worse now, but he could hope. As Evan laughed and pointed out how he was putting something that bad out into the ether, Bram threw his hands up, laughing as he tried to ward it off. ”It was enough damage as it was,” he promised. ”I wouldn’t have complained though. That sounds awful, I know.” And that was with him being one of the least blood thirsty med students in the place. Some of them would’ve given up their own thumb, well, at least a toe, to get in on juicy cases. Every doc in the place probably would’ve told him how he’d cursed himself, but most of the stories about that happening had to be an exaggeration right? ”I think I’d take that over pee duty,” he admitted. ”I’m not gonna really curse us and say the Q word though. That’s just tempting fate.” The thought of that had a shiver going down his spine. Maybe in a couple of years he’d be ready for something like that, but not now. If things had gone his way, his entire career would’ve been spent on the other side of the admit desk. Maybe a time or two they’d have rolled him in for injuries suffered on the ice, but each time he would’ve gotten back out there. Being the guy a handful of years older than everybody else in class, limping in half the time, Bram had ended up telling the story about how he got there what felt like a hundred times over. It seemed as though Evan hadn’t heard about it though. ”I took a bad hit on the ice in college,” Bram admitted, his smile dimming. ”They tried to put my knee back together again, but it was never gonna be strong enough for me to play professionally. Figured maybe one day I’d be able to patch someone else up in the way they couldn’t.” Like his dad, he’d take his career in a different direction. If ortho hadn’t worked out there were plenty of other specialities, the ER definitely a possibility for him. ”I bet the trauma docs would be happy to have you. They always seem to have their hands full down here. You got a story about why you went into medicine?” It was probably nosy to ask, but most of them had told it a dozen times over already, to get into med school, to the docs who would decide on where they matched in hospital departments.

“Just hang in there, you’ve got this,” Evan chuckled. He knew that things hadn’t been going that well for Bram that shift but it could only get better from there, it had to. Days seemed to be like that at the hospital at the moment, there was always so much going on but they were the lowest rung on the ladder and that meant that they often ended up getting the jobs that no one else wanted to do. It was just the way of things but Evan knew that as time went on new people would come in who would be able to take on those jobs and they would slowly start rising through the ranks. It was the way it worked and it had done for a long time so he knew that it wasn’t going to change any time soon. “It does but I get it, trust me,” Evan chuckled. He often found himself wishing that something exciting would end up happening when he was in a middle of a boring day so he really couldn’t blame Bram one bit. As Bram spoke again, an amused smile formed on Evan’s lips. “You say that now but you could find yourself rushed off your feet and on pee duty,” he teased. He knew that it was definitely a possibility, it was an awful job but someone had to do it and the truth was that Evan was glad he hadn’t been the one to draw the short straw that day. “Please don’t, I think you’d have more than a few doctors ready to kick you out of here if you did,” he grinned. Just saying that things were quiet was asking for trouble and Evan was certain that no one who worked there would end up thanking Bram for cursing them like that. Evan had heard rumours about what had happened to Bram in the past but he had learned a long time ago not to bother listening to rumours. Sometimes they were true but normally they were exaggerated as time went on and it was often difficult to tell how the story really went without hearing it from the person involved. As Bram explained, Evan found himself nodding. “That sounds like a good reason to become a doctor to me,” he admitted. “There really wasn’t anything they could do?” he asked, knowing that it had to have been difficult for Bram finding out that his dream of playing professionally was over. Unfortunately things like that happened all the time in contact sports but Evan had a feeling that didn’t make it any easier to deal with when it was you being told that you wouldn’t be able to play again. Evan had known that risk with every football game and practice he had taken part in while he was at college but it had been worth it as far as he was concerned. He had never dreamed of playing professionally but it had still meant the world to him. As Bram asked if he had a story about why he went into medicine, Evan’s expression turned thoughtful for a moment before he nodded. “Mine comes down to my mom. She was really sick when she was a child and after all the treatments she went through she was told that she wouldn’t be able to have children. When I was old enough she told me that she always thought that my birth and that of my sister were miracles she had given up hope of ever coming true and I realised that I wanted to try and help others experience their own miracles even if it isn’t in the same way,” he shrugged.
