━ i’ll keep fighting ... till i got nothing left ━
THERE were many different layers to Dean, some of which have been shared with those he trusted most, others that he kept separate from everyone entirely. Some things he wanted to keep to himself. Sue em.’ Dean let out a soft grunt of annoyance as he reached for the beer in front of him. This case he was on was becoming more and more complicated by the moment and he was on his own. Sam was having enough issues on his own without having him pull him into a case, something Dean didn’t think he was ready for. Sam had to be able to take care of himself, without the constant reminder and guilt of what had happened when Lucifer was possession’ him. So this one was all up to Dean. But he could figure it out, he was certain of that, it was just a matter of time before he figured out what was killing men in town. A Succubus? Possibly, but he didn’t have enough proof of that yet to take any action. Not yet anyway.
He was flipping through the pages in his father’s journal when he felt eyes boring into the back of his head. He was being watched — which was definitely not a good thing. “Can I help you with something?” He questioned the stranger before turning around to glance at whomever it was.His answer was met with a disapproving glare that spoke louder than any groan or counter argument he’d considered responding with. He was busy tryin’ to figure out what the hell was killing all the men in town. As soon as he had opened his mouth and turned around to look at the stranger, nobody was there - they’d vanished. Dean huffed and turned back around, “Not creepy at all,” he muttered as he continued his research. Maybe he’d do better if he visited the crime scenes again.
With that, Dean closed his laptop shut and packed up before heading back out towards the Impala. It probably wasn’t smart to be going at cases alone, but he’d made up his mind ever since Sam had returned, that he was not going to force him into jumping back into the life, he could tell his brother was a mess, so he was going to do whatever it took to get Sam back on his feet, to get him back to his old self… if that were even possible. Lucifer had done a number on Sam. Again. The weight of it all, the guilt, pain, mistakes — all of it bounced back into his mind, deeming him incapable of moving on from it, from how he’d failed Sam. That shame wouldn’t ever go away, but he would do his damndest to make sure he’d make it up to Sam.
Thankfully the first crime scene wasn’t that far from where he was, maybe a ten minute drive. Hopefully he would be able to find out somethin’ at these sites. With the way his luck had been goin,’ he wasn’t optimistic, but he had to try. Starting up the Impala, Dean pulled out of the parking lot, and headed toward the site of where the first body was found - just outside of town in one of the surrounding suburbs. It was odd to say the least where the body was found and the condition of it, but it was a start at retracing his steps. Back to square one.
Or so he thought.
“Son of a bitch.” Another body had been found. This time, in the woods, poor bastard’s body tossed aside like garbage. Dean was at the crime scene in minutes.

━ i don't know where i'm going, but i sure know where i've been ━ ROXXI DECIDED SHE HAD TO GET HER FUCKING LIFE TOGETHER. After the tape was released and caused severe fucking embarrassment and headache, she didn’t think her shit could get any more fucked up. Obviously, she was wrong. Because then Mikey had to open his fat mouth and she almost lost Chase. Despite trying so hard to put distance between them in the beginning and deny what was happening, Roxxi had realized she couldn’t let go of him now. She loved him, and maybe one day she’d get to be a Buckley and pop out a few of his kids━if she managed to keep him that long. If Chase put up with her that long.
In any case, she felt like living her life in a way that would make her father proud was a great goal. He’d love Chase, and he’d also find a way to tell Roxxi to stop being an idiot so that she’d actually listen. It would be gentle, but with that generous helping of tough love that she needed.
And she had to get back into hunting. Dean was the perfect segue into that, and while Roxxi could’ve just texted him, she kept putting it off. First, it was “after the shit with the video settled,” then “after Christmas,” and, finally, it was “once the weather warms up.” She supposed seeing Dean heading toward his car was the sign she needed.
Datti una svegliata, mio piccolo angelo.
Fine.
She didn’t think he could be going anywhere far (nothing in Mystic Falls was), and was beyond politeness and etiquette at the moment━she would follow him until she could speak to him. Unless he was, of course, already chasing evidence for a current case.
Her Mustang pulled into the space next to the Impala only moments after Dean had parked, with Roxxi grinning at his car once she was out and walking past. She remembered the feeling of the cool metal on her bare skin that night, though the thought brought on a wave of guilt. But was she really going to convict herself over every man she’d been with before Chase? No. That wasn’t fair. And, more than that, it was fucking tiresome. She didn’t have to sleep with Dean every time she was around him; this was about hunting and fixing her life.
Roxxi didn’t know how to shut her mouth on the best of days. Right now, though, as Dean approached an officer standing at the edge of the taped-off crime scene, she needed an in. And it seemed like the perfect time.
She slipped into Dean’s space easily, curling an arm around his and pressing her side into him. “Hey,” She hummed, “Are we…” Her timing was perfect━or very, very awful, depending on who you asked. A millisecond after she moved in, Dean was flashing what looked like a badge. From her angle, at least. Maybe she had a law enforcement fetish, but she was willing to bet it was just a fake.
Roxxi straightened up, though her arm remained around Dean’s, dark eyes trained on the officer who looked more than a little perturbed. He was staring at their connection━which was completely unprofessional for FBI agents━before Roxxi cleared her throat and smiled. “Also Agent Barley… as of last month.” She squeezed Dean’s bicep softly, repeating his fake name. “Strange, right? We get so many questions. Truth is, when you spend so many long hours together… it’s bound to happen.” Roxxi added before the officer could even question them, turning her happy gaze up to Dean and flashing her best hopelessly-in-love look.
Instead of waiting for the officer to say anything else, Roxxi used her hold on Dean to turn and lead him deeper into the scene. “Minchia,” She sighed under her breath, “I didn’t know you committed felonies in your free time. Are we here hunting something?” Roxxi asked, carefully scanning the scene in front of her before looking up at Dean.

━ i’ll keep fighting ... till i got nothing left ━
DEAN approached the officer standing at the taped-off crime scene, his job to make sure that evidence wasn’t tampered with or stomped all over. Protect the crime scene at all costs. Before the officer could say a word, Dean grabbed his badge from his pocket and flashed it at the officer to let him inside the scene. But just as he had flashed the badge, he felt a slender arm wrap around his. His eyes shot down low and there stood Roxxi. He knew it had been a while since they’d seen one another, he remembered that night all too well. The feeling of her slender body on the hood of the Impala… was a night to remember.
He stepped out of memory lane quickly enough to see the officer looking at the two of them suspiciously and before he could utter a single word, Roxxi spoke and saved both their asses. ‘Also Agent Barley… as of last month. Strange, right? We get so many questions. Truth is, when you spend so many long hours together… it’s bound to happen.’ She blurted out smooth as butter, squeezing his bicep for added effect and giving him an ‘I’m in love’ look. It was convincing enough that the officer before them didn’t question it and stepped aside to let them both pass through. Dean gave the officer a short nod as Roxxi led them deeper into the crime scene, not even giving the officer time to respond, or question what had just been said by Roxxi.
Dean didn’t even have to utter one word, Roxxi had done all the talking for the two of them. ‘I didn’t know you committed felonies in your free time. Are we here hunting something?’ All he could do was roll his eyes at Roxxi as they approached the body of the poor bastard who had died, but at the hands of what? Crouching down Dean lifted the tarp that had been placed over the guy’s body. “Keep it down, would ya?Hunting ain’t exactly legal, Roxxi,” he said as stared at the body, not looking up at Roxxi. The guy’s body was torn apart, shredded chin to naval. Whatever had done this had claws and fangs, sharp enough to tear through skin and bone.
“Damn…” He whispered as he stood up straight and glanced around to make sure everyone else was outta ear shot before looking back at Roxxi. “Yeah, I’ve been following these attacks for a few weeks now and still have no idea what the hell is doing this…” A werewolf or wendigo maybe? Or maybe something else, none of the facts lined up with anything he thought it might be. Then again, this town was unlike any other he had ever encountered, so maybe he needed to think outside the box on what could have possibly have been doing this.
“So what are you doing here huh? Followin’ me? Ya just couldn’t get enough of me, could ya?” He teased, knowing full and well it had been a minute since he had seen Roxxi and the last encounter they had was definitely one for the books. Definitely wouldn’t mind a repeat if he were being honest…

━ i don't know where i'm going, but i sure know where i've been ━ IT WAS JUST HER LUCK FINDING DEAN HERE, READY TO DIG INTO another crime scene, and hopefully lend some of his experience and knowledge without Roxxi making it too obvious that anything other than demons was a little out of her depth. She’d learned about a lot of them, but only so much could be taught in a classroom, and, like Dean, she had a personal vendetta of the dead-father kind. So, y’know, they were most important to her.
Briefly, she wondered what it would be like to actually be married. Not to Dean, of course, but to Chase, the man she invested all her time and energy into. Would it be any different to now, other than not having to dream about it anymore? Well, they’d probably be living together, but she was at his place most nights, anyway.
Right, no━she was going to focus. There wasn’t anything actively happening right now, just a body to investigate━a crime scene to infiltrate━and she desperately hoped Chase wouldn’t be assigned to this case.
“I could not have said it any quieter.” Roxxi grumbled at him, though her voice was a little louder now, not much higher than normal speaking level. Faccia a culo.
She unlooped from Dean and watched him as he crouched and moved the tarp away, her face twisting up at the sight… and the smell. Not only was the corpse half ripped open, but she could smell the pain he’d suffered, the despair━the fear.
“Still?” She raised her brows like she wasn’t just as clueless as Dean. “After weeks? Come on,” Roxxi puffed, “Are all the others exactly like this?” She asked, beginning to move around the space, using her extra senses to try to see if there was anything else of note. Most of it was just feelings, though, and they didn’t lend any facts.
Her eyes darted back to Dean as he teased her, and she smirked back at him, raising her brows. “Ooh, yes, I just couldn’t wait to see you again. I’ve been stalking you all around town, just waiting for the next moment when you’d look at me again.” Roxxi batted her lashes like a lovestruck cartoon animal, then let it fade into an eye roll. She smiled and continued her wide circle around the body. “I did see you heading somewhere, and I wanted to speak to you. I’ve been trying to get back into hunting again… you know, for the old man.” She glanced at Dean━he’d know exactly what she meant. “It was the perfect place to meet, sì?”
She spotted a few bronze tubes in the grass a few feet away, next to a tree, and wandered closer. “Some rude old man helped me take down a demon not far from here━he killed one of the students at Whitmore. Anyway, I realized I’m a little rusty…” More than a little, if the grouch had anything to say about it.
Roxxi bent and inspected the tubes, then pointed to them and looked at Dean. She wasn’t dumb enough to pick them up without gloves━which she did not have because she was not a real FBI agent. “Bullet casings, but no blood.” Roxxi had scanned the grass for any trails, but, more than that, she couldn’t smell it. “Have they all been like this? Have they all looked like chew toys?” There was one thing… ugh, why couldn’t she remember the name? Those creatures from Native American stories, she was sure it started with a W.

STILL?’ She asked, brows raised as if he should’ve already known what this was and have killed it already. Okay he wasn’t friggin’ Sherlock Holmes, he couldn’t solve everything so damn quickly. Usually he would have some assistance from Sam, but he was a little indisposed at the moment. Dean had been doing most hunts solo lately, not that he cared, but it usually helped to have some kind of backup - another brain really to think things over. So, he was on his own, having to wrack his own brain in what this could possibly be. Then again, he had a good hunch as to what it was doing this, but it didn’t make any sense. Not in this area. What he thought it was usually resided in more remote areas in the upper midwest, not the east coast. Now that he thought about it, they are rarely seen out of Minnesota or the north of Michigan, which is why he didn’t think that was what was doing this. But maybe he was wrong…
‘After weeks? Come on. Are all the others exactly like this?’ Roxxi asked as she moved around the scene. Dean sighed heavily as he stood up, the tarp now back over top of the poor bastard who had been attacked. “Yea, everybody has been just like this one. Absolutely shredded to pieces…” It was a brutal attack. Hell, they’d all been brutal attacks and whatever this was needed to be stopped as soon as possible. The last thing he needed was more bodies popping up all over town because of this thing.
‘Ooh, yes, I just couldn’t wait to see you again. I’ve been stalking you all around town, just waiting for the next moment when you’d look at me again.’ Roxxi said sarcastically at his stalking comment as she batted her eyelashes at him like a lovesick puppy and Dean couldn’t help but laugh quietly to himself. ‘I did see you heading somewhere, and I wanted to speak to you. I’ve been trying to get back into hunting again… you know, for the old man.’ Dean looked from the body back up to her, eyebrows raised. “And what do you mean by trying? Please don’t tell me you’ve been going off by yourself…” God he really hoped not. She definitely did not need to be going off hunting by herself with no backup, especially not as a hunter who had been out of the job for a while. While he knew she meant well with wanting to get back into the family business, he didn’t want to see her get hurt either.
Green eyes followed Roxxi as she wandered a few feet from the body. ‘Some rude old man helped me take down a demon not far from here━he killed one of the students at Whitmore. Anyway, I realized I’m a little rusty…’ Rude old man? Killed a student? What the hell had she been getting herself into lately? “A little? Christ Roxxi, what the hell have you been getting yourself into lately? You can’t just jump back into huntin’ with little to no training, especially with some ‘rude old man’ who kills college students. Which, by the way, wanna explain that little detail more?” He asked. If there was a psycho out there killing students at the local college he was gonna have to have a conversation with Roxxi and take the bastard out. That was the last thing he needed right now - a psycho college killer.
Walking over to where Roxxi was, he bent down himself and looked at the bullet casings on the ground, careful not to touch them without gloves. “What the hell?” He muttered to himself. Bullet casings but no blood seen. Bodies chewed to bits in the forest as if the creature was feeding on them, the number of bodies popping up… “Son of a bitch,” Dean huffed as he turned to look at Roxxi. “I think I know what we’re dealing with…” That’s what it didn’t make sense before, because usually the creatures were up in the Minnesota area, in seclusion. “Wendigo.” He said, quieter than before as to not raise anyone else’s attention If he were right, that would mean that these creatures were migrating to areas they shouldn’t be anywhere near. Which would mean an even bigger issue: Mystic Falls was turning into a beacon for the supernatural, even more than he originally thought.

━ i don't know where i'm going, but i sure know where i've been ━ ROXXI WAS REALLY ONLY TEASING DEAN ABOUT HIS hunting skills (or lack thereof), but, seriously, he was at this all the time━how had he not figured it out after weeks? Maybe he needed her help as much as she wanted his.
Instead of making another comment, she instead shifted to ragging on Dean about claiming she was following him. As if she was obsessed with him after one━okay, two━nights together. Like she’d never slept with anyone semi-decent in the sack━hadn’t he seen the video? She would’ve snorted if it was something she was okay fully bringing up now. But it wasn’t, and, thankfully, most people not directly involved with the school hadn’t seen it. Plus, if Dean had, she figured he was the type to say something about it.
“Oh, I must be stalking you if we’re here at the same time, but I cannot go out on my own, either? Dio, make up your damn mind,” Roxxi grumbled, completing her semi-circle and walking towards where she saw something shimmering in the grass. She told Dean her story of meeting Bobby as she did, which he clearly was not listening to.
Before bending to inspect them, Roxxi glanced over her shoulder and gave Dean an incredulous look. “No training?” She hissed, “Watch your mouth.” Dean knew as well as she did that her dad was just as qualified to train her as his own was. “Also, can you please try using your ears?” Roxxi puffed, muttering, “Idiota.” at him (she figured he didn’t need a translation to figure that one out). “The demon killed a college student. An old man, another hunter, helped me exorcise him. Capisci?”
Once that was all cleared up, Roxxi returned to the task at hand━the one Dean couldn’t seem to do on his own. He came over to look at the casings, then finally figured it out━or so he thought. Roxxi wasn’t sure she could trust his judgement anymore. “Wendigo?” She repeated as though testing the word on her tongue.
She thought she remembered them in one of her father’s lessons. He tended not to dwell on things that were rare and far from where they were, and, on top of that, his lessons had been more than a decade ago. “Well, first of all, you’re welcome.” Roxxi’s eyes flicked to Dean’s as she smirked. “Second, why would one be in Mystic Falls?” But she’d be lying if she said she hadn’t felt the pull recently. Every time she was at work, she wanted to be back in Mystic Falls, and while she used to think it was just her love for Chase guiding her back, she realized it wasn’t so romantic. It was supernatural. That, however, was not something she was going to mention to Dean. “Those things that… eat people, correct? Cannot be shot with a gun?” Which would explain the casings and absence of blood. “Have you ever hunted one before?” Roxxi asked, glancing over her shoulder to ensure that no one was within earshot before moving a step closer to Dean, her shoulder pressed to his, as if that would help keep people out.
