— you did not mean to be cruel but that does not mean you were kind —
KOL'S EYES RELAXED ON THE CLOCK FOR THE UMPTEENTH TIME, a glass of bourbon on the rocks in one hand while the other held a pen. He was in the midst of grading the papers of his students but after reading an insanely absurd line written by one of his students, he felt as though he would not be able to push through those papers without falling in the loving embrace of insanity and he would rather keep whatever was left of his sanity in tact. So, he placed the pen down on the desk and chose to abandon his responsibilities and seek out a familiar face. He'd tried not to seek her out while she was still working, but time was moving too slow and he could no longer take it. So, he figured he might as well pull her away from work because his company was much more fulfilling than her job, was it not? There was truly nothing bigger than Kol's ego. He began making his way upstairs where he changed into something warmer because even though he felt no coldness, he knew it would attract unwanted attention to walk around town in short sleeves. So, he figured it would help him blend in better. Did he not stand out enough due to his incredibly good looks? Again, his ego truly knew no limits.
Kol left the Mikaelson Mansion not long after and began heading in the general direction of the Mystic Grill. In the midst of his walk, he found himself lost in his own thoughts. He couldn't help but think back on the day he'd met Evangeline for the first time. Back then, she had seemed completely immune to his charm and when his sharp-tongue made itself known, she shot back her own snarky remarks. In a way, she reminded him of himself, minus all the killing that he used to indulge in back in the day. Kol would never in a thousand years call himself a good person now because with the amount of blood on his hands, he'd never ever think of himself as a good man. While people may have forgotten about his monstrosity because of time, Kol had not and most likely never will. Control had been a fickle thing in Kol's life. It was far too easy for him to snap out of control and maybe it was just him aching for the attention of his siblings or just him being an awful person in general but with the help of Evangeline, those moments became a lot less frequent. Sure, he still had his moments where even Evangeline wouldn't be able to pull him off the edge, but then he'd let her back in and allow her to help him again. No matter how many times they found themselves at the starting point, she never gave up on him. It was rather odd, wasn't it? Because if he had been in her shoes and he was the one helping him, he would've given up on himself an awfully long time ago.
But Evangeline was different. She'd always been different.
Despite the time spent apart between each time he was daggered and then undaggered, it always felt like no time had passed at all. She was always there. Kol pressed his palm against the door leading into the Mystic Grill and pushed it open and the second the door was open, he was surrounded from every direction with loud talks. He knew he could always count on the Mystic Grill to be crowded, no matter the time of day. Kol released the door and let it shut behind him, his posture was the definition of confident. Honestly one might think that he owned the place, but that was far from the truth. Actually, he was here to see the owner of the place. Kol approached the bar where he found someone sitting on his usual stool which almost made his eye twitch. Almost. Progress, right? Kol reached for the drink that the bartender was attempting to serve to the man and placed it on the man's hand. "Awful drink you have there, mate. Go and enjoy it elsewhere." With the power of his compulsion already working on the man, he watched him rise from his seat and begin walking off. Kol's lips stretched into a smile that was too big to be sincere. Those sincere smiles always seemed to come out whenever Evangeline was around (and his family. Sometimes) but of course, he would never admit that aloud because Kol would be nothing if he wasn't a complicated man.
His eyes relaxed on the bartender's name tag. Stephen? Steven? "Hello, whatever your name is. I'm here for Evangeline. If you could tell her that Kol's here, that would be great." Kol made a gesture for the bartender to run along to do as told and watched with a pleased smile as he made his way to his boss' office. In the meantime, Kol scanned his surroundings, making eye contact with a couple of ladies already looking his way. A small smirk began forming on the edge of his lips before he tore his gaze away. Back then, he wouldn't have hesitated to let the girls leave with him only to feed on them and leave their dead bodies behind to be discovered by people. But, oddly enough, he didn't feel the same urge to do any of that anymore. Instead, he waited for Evangeline to come out so they can find something to do with one another.

There was a time when Evangeline had lived the life of a princess but the truth was that that felt like a distant memory now. While she was growing up she had always known that she would rule her kingdom one day when her parents were gone but in order to do that she had needed to have access to her magic. As it was the day her parents had died she had become a vampire and while she didn’t hold any ill will about that, at first there had been a part of her that had been sad about the fact that she couldn’t fulfil what had always been her destiny. Instead she had left the kingdom in the hands of her best friend and after making sure that he and her people were going to be okay and she had left with Kol. The life they had built together had been a good one and the truth was that she had come to enjoy his company more than she would ever admit to anyone, even herself. They had almost shared a kiss the night that he had walked her back to her chambers and to this day there was still a part of her that wondered what might have happened if they had done but she was certain that he didn’t feel that way about her. They had known each other for such a long time and she had proved to him time and time again that he could count on her and he had done the same for her. Even during the times he was daggered she had never given up on him and the fact that he was in Mystic Falls now really was perfect. She knew that Kol was doing his best to keep his bloodlust under control and she was doing her best to help him when she could. Right now they were both doing their best to blend in, Kol was teaching at the Salvatore School which was something that she had always known that he was capable of but had never thought that he would believe in himself enough to do while she was running the Grill and the group home that she had set up. Out of the friends she had made while Kol was daggered only Alec had made his way to Mystic Falls so far but she still hoped that in time the others would too. For now Evangeline knew that she just had to believe that they were alright and they would let her know if they needed her help. She had taken all of them under her wing at one time or another and they had become family to her so she knew that she was always going to be there for them, just like she would always be there for Kol. Having him around definitely made her life much more fun although she knew that Alec didn’t exactly approve. He had always been protective of her and even though he had loosened up to an extent after he got drunk and married the love of his life, she knew that he still didn’t want anything to happen to her. There were times when she was pretty sure that he forgot that she was centuries older than he was and that she had been looking after herself for a long time but in a way his protectiveness was cute so she let it slide most of the time although she didn’t hesitate in telling him when it got too much. That day she had spent some time working the bar before heading out to the back to sort out the wages for her employees. It wasn’t the most exciting job in the world but they all worked hard so she knew that it wouldn’t do them any good to end up going without their pay. She was just about finished when one of the bartenders knocked on the door and told her that Kol was there and she quickly finished what she was doing before heading out to the bar. “Am I going to have to put a Reserved for Kol Mikaelson sign there?” she quipped as she realised that he had taken what had become his usual seat once more even though not too long ago it had been occupied by someone else. Glancing across the bar she could see the look at Alec was giving them from his spot serving drinks to a group of women who seemed pretty fixated on Kol and she felt a pang of jealousy at the way they were looking at Kol that she quickly pushed away before rolling her eyes in amusement at Alec and turning back to look at Kol. “I thought you were grading papers today or did you get bored already?” she asked as she grabbed a bottle of Kol’s favourite and poured them each a drink before lifting her glass to her lips and taking a sip. — you did not mean to be cruel but that does not mean you were kind —
KOL'S FINGERS TAPPED IMPATIENTLY ON THE SURFACE OF THE BAR TOP as he waited for Evangeline to come out. He was never the most patient guy but thankfully, he didn't have to wait for long because Evangeline was out not long after and his eyes met hers. A scoff escaped him as he leaned back on his seat, his posture as always showed that he didn't carry a single care in the world. "Perhaps you should. I am, after all, your only VIP customer, am I not? I'd like to think so since having me around helps your business considerably." Kol teased with a grin already forming on his lips as he looked over his shoulder at the table full of ladies, each one of them trying to get him to look their way. Though while he was looking at the ladies, his eyes relaxed on a taller man serving them and noticed the way he was looking at him in particular which made Kol quirk an eyebrow but his attention moved back to Evangeline not long after when he heard her question.
He released a scoff and reached out to take the drink, taking a moment to just enjoy the drink before he placed it down on the bar top. He knew he could always trust Evangeline to make his drink perfectly. "I was beginning to lose whatever sanity I may have left. I could not bear looking at their ridiculous answers for a second longer." Kol commented before lifting the glass to his lips to take yet another sip. "One of them thinks that Vervain is an illegal plant." Kol shook his head as he placed the glass back down, letting his index finger trace the rim of the glass as a way to keep his hand busy but then he looked over his shoulder again and met the same eyes looking their way. "Your mate's got a bit of a staring problem." Kol commented aloud, giving the other a mocking wave and an insincere smile before he looked at Evangeline again. "I take it he knows who I am, then?" Kol felt something odd in his chest at the thought that the other might like Evangeline. It would explain the looks he was giving him. Though he refused to invest in that feeling and figure out what it was. He refused to give it much thought and instead he just downed his drink in one go. "Grab your things, darling. We're getting out of here. The Grill can survive without you for the rest of the day." Kol gave Evangeline his most charming smile despite knowing that it won't work on her. For some reason, it never works on her.

Evangeline enjoyed working at the Grill because she had always been the kind of person who preferred to be working alongside people and getting her hands dirty rather than watching from the sidelines but the truth was that that day she had been longing for an excuse to finish work early. She knew that she was the boss so technically she could do whatever she wanted to but that had never really been her style, at least not without a good reason. “I think your brother Niklaus would have something to say about that, he tends to prop the bar up quite often himself it seems,” Evangeline teased. Truth be told she wasn’t particularly fond of the hybrid, not with the way that he liked to dagger Kol whenever he did something that he didn’t like, but she still couldn’t resist teasing him nonetheless. “I can’t deny that having you here is good for business though, some of the customers seem to stay longer than they normally would trying to catch your eye,” she added, glancing over at the women that Alec was serving who proved her point quite well. She had known Kol for such a long time that she knew what he liked by now so it was easy for her to make his favourite drink for him. Their tastes were quite similar it seemed and she took a sip of her own drink before her gaze came to rest on him once again. As he revealed what one of the answers was, Evangeline couldn’t help but laugh. “It isn’t but it should be,” she grinned, knowing that it would definitely make life much easier that way. “Insanity is overrated, you’re best off out of there,” she added, her smile turning genuine as she took another sip before setting her glass down in front of her. Looking over at Alec as Kol said he had a habit of staring, Evangeline quickly waved Kol’s comment off. “He’s protective, that’s all. He forgets that I’ve been looking after myself since long before he was born at times,” she shrugged. As Kol asked if Alec knew who he was, Evangeline nodded. “He does. He’s like a brother to me so I might have talked about you a little,” she admitted, biting her lip to stop herself from saying anything more considering that she had actually probably talked about Kol quite a lot. Evangeline felt a smile touch her lips as Kol said that they were getting out of there and she hesitated only for a moment before downing the rest of her drink as well. The smile might not work on her the way it did so many others but she had wanted an excuse to get out of there and now she had one so she knew that she was going to take it. “What have you got in mind?” she asked, quickly making sure that she had everything that she needed. “I’m heading out Alec, you’re in charge,” she said as she made her way to where Kol was waiting, an amused smile forming on her face at the concern on Alec’s face. “I’ll be fine, don’t worry. I’ll see you later,” she assured him, knowing that he would no doubt want to know what happened when she and Kol parted ways. “So, where to?” she asked, not sure whether they would be going somewhere within walking distance or whether Kol wanted to go for a drive. — you did not mean to be cruel but that does not mean you were kind —
KOL MERELY ROLLED HIS EYES AT EVANGELINE'S COMMENT, though it wasn't long before a half-smile was visible on his lips. "But between the two of us, who do you like spending time with more, hm?" He knew that the comment had only been a teasing one because they both knew what Nik had done to him, so he was all too happy to dive more into the teasing. "But, fine, I might be inclined to give up my seat to people with good taste, at the very least. That guy's drink of choice screamed post divorce depression." Kol nearly shivered with disgust upon recalling what the man had ordered. He felt a small smirk tug at the corner of his lips at Evangeline's next words. "Well then, don't you worry, they'll be off quickly after I leave. I'm not here to stay for long." Kol came here with no intentions to spend the rest of his night surrounded by those four walls. He came here to get Evangeline so that they can both leave and find something a lot more entertaining to do that didn't have anything to do with the word work.
"It should be, but it is not. So why did he write that with so much conviction in the paper? You'd think that with how long I spend babbling on and on during class they'd at least get the easy questions right." Some of the students passed with flying colors but then there were a few students who seemed to be struggling even with the easiest information and it was enough to make him wonder if he was doing something wrong. But it might just be a problem with lack of focus. Either way, he was going to have to talk to them once he was done grading papers. "Tell me about it." Kol replied with a half-smile on his lips at Evangeline's next comment before he brought up the guy's staring problem.
"Hm." Kol's jaw flexed for a moment as he brought his attention back to the guy, watching him for a moment before he brought up that the guy knows who he was. His attention moved back to Evangeline with a quirked brow before he released a brief chuckle. "A little, you say?" Kol questioned teasingly. "He's looking at me like that when you've only talked a little about me?" Kol could see that the other guy was protective but Evangeline was no damsel in distress and she wasn't the type of person who needed a knight in shining armor to come to her rescue. There were other teasing comments lingering in Kol's mind but they were all pushed to the side upon processing Evangeline's question. "We deserve to have some fun, wouldn't you agree? After all, it's been a hectic week. I'm aching to do something exciting." After spending nearly a week teaching at the school, he figured it was time for him to break the routine and do something a little more fun. They deserved that, didn't they? He watched as Evangeline talked to the guy with the staring problem and then, Evangeline was on her way to him. He rose from his seat after leaving money under his glass. He fixed his coat and turned to face Evangeline. "Hm, first thing's first. Have you eaten yet?" He meant actual food, nothing blood-wise. He began approaching the door of the Grill with Evangeline, holding the door open for her to head out first before following after.

An amused smile formed on Evangeline's face as Kol rolled his eyes at her comment about Niklaus. It was no secret that she absolutely hated the way he usually decided to treat his siblings and she was never going to understand why he felt like daggering Kol was the only way to deal with him. Evangeline knew him better thsn that and she also knew that Kol deserved so much better so she would never choose to reserve a spot for his brother over him but it was far too easy to tease Kol about it nonetheless. As he asked which of them she preferred spending time with, Evangeline couldn't help but laugh. "Alright, I'll give you that. You beat most people hands down in that respect," she said, her tone light but her words sincere. Kol was the one constant she'd had in her life for centuries and he was without a doubt one of her favourite people to spend time with if not her favourite, not that she would ever tell him that of course. "Perhaps you just have a different definition of what makes a good drink than other people do," she teased, knowing that she really had seen it all while working at the Grill. As Kol spoke again, Evangeline couldn't help but laugh. "Oh no, I can't have all my customers leave when you do. Alec will just have to work his charm on them and convince them to spend more money although he can't flirt with them like he used to because I know his husband will have something to say about that," she grinned. "Maybe he thought that if he talked about it enough you would compel the world into making it happen," Evangeline laughed, knowing that that wasn't going to happen. "Either that or perhaps he thought you would pass him if he makes himself out to be a rebel like you," she teased, her expression playful as she looked over at Kol. Truth be told she had no idea whether there was an actual idea behind it or whether the boy was actually an idiot but she felt bad for Kol having to read it nonetheless. "They weren't all that bad, were they?" she asked, hoping that the answer to that question would be no. As Kol talked about Alec, Evangeline's smile returned. "He's harmless, at least to you. He knows how much you mean to me," Evangeline shrugged. If she was being honest with herself that wasn't strictly true since even she had yet to admit just how much Kol meant to her but she wasn't ready to even think about that right now. Evangeline really was ready to finish work early and get out of thrre and now Kol was giving her the perfect excuse to do just that so she really was grateful to him. Looking over at Alec, Evangeline nodded. "That's right. I gave him a rundown of your bloodiest moments so he thinks you're here to corrupt me," she shrugged, pretending to be serious for a moment before giving it away that she was joking by laughing. "Your reputation proceeds you Kol but he doesn't know you, not like I do," she said, reaching over and giving his arm a gentle squeeze. Truth be told she wasn't sure if anyone knew him like she did but the truth was she liked that. "I definitely agree. To be honest I've been looking for an excuse to get out of here so your timing is impeccable like always," she admitted. Pulling on her coat, Evangeline made sure she had everything she needed before following Kol through the building and out towards the front door. "I haven't. I'm starving actually," she admitted as they reached the door and he held it open for her. "Why thank you, kind sir," she grinned as she stepped outside. "Shall we go for our favourite place or are you in the mood to try something new?" she asked, knowing that she really didn't mind either way. "I'm happy to drive if you like," she added, not sure whether he had walked. KOL MIKAELSON

— you did not mean to be cruel but that does not mean you were kind —
KOL FELT A SMALL SMIRK TUG AT THE CORNER OF HIS LIPS AT EVANGELINE'S WORDS, his shoulders lifting and dropping in an arrogant shrug. "I know." He offered back with a grin playing on his lips. He released a small hum at Evangeline's next words. "Or, you know, I have what many would call taste." Kol's grin was still visible on his lips. He liked to think that his taste was impeccable when it came to many things, but especially when it came to alcoholic drinks. After all, he'd been enjoying those drinks for what felt like centuries now. Of course he'd be well versed when it came to alcoholic drinks. "Perhaps my true calling was being a bartender, not a teacher. I'd simply decline to serve patrons with poor taste." Kol's shoulders lifted and dropped with the same grin still locked on his lips. Kol lifted his drink to enjoy yet another sip before letting it rest back down on the bar top. Kol quirked an eyebrow at Evangeline's words before he glanced over at 'Alec' as Evangeline liked to call him. "He can flirt?" Kol questioned with a brief chuckle falling from his lips. "Well then, I'd certainly pay a hefty amount to witness such a spectacle." He didn't pass the chance to tease and didn't exactly keep his voice down either because a part of him did want Alec to hear.
Kol felt a grin form on his lips at Evangeline's words. "It certainly seems like something his tiny walnut of a brain would think." He agreed as he lifted his drink to his lips before he made a face briefly at Evangeline's words. Rebel like him? Oh, he'd fail that kid instantly if he ever tried to act like him. Kol rolled his eyes and shook his head. "A mini Kol Mikaelson. Oh, how precious. Fills me with pure disgust." Kol offered with the same grin on his lips before he took another sip from his drink, enjoying the subtle burn that followed. It made him keep coming back for more. "No, a few did pass." Kol revealed with a nod of his head. Kol kept his eyes fixed on Evangeline for a moment. "And how much do I mean to you, darling?" Kol questioned with a small teasing smile already forming on the edge of his lips.
"Oh, now we're talking." Kol's lips stretched into a grin at Evangeline's words. "I hope you didn't leave any of the gore-y details out. Helps paint a much clearer picture of what I'm gonna make you do." He teased back. Though Evangeline's next words made his grin fade into a smile, a small but genuine one. "As always." Kol replied when Evangeline said that his timing was impeccable. "Ah, we can't have that now, can we?" He added when Evangeline revealed that she was starving. It wasn't long before they were heading out of the Grill. Kol held open the door for Evangeline and let her step out first before he stepped out behind her, moving to walk with her side by side. "Let's hit up our favorite." Kol revealed, his hands resting inside the pockets of his jacket. "I didn't take my car. I wanted to stretch my legs and get some fresh air." Usually, Kol would take his Porsche while visiting Evangeline in case they wanted to hang out after, but tonight was just a bit different. "You can give me the keys. I'll drive us, though."

Evangeline couldn’t stop herself from rolling her eyes playfully as Kol said he knew that he beat most people hands down. On paper they shouldn’t get along as well as they did but she had taken a liking to Kol when they met in Greece and he had been a constant in her life ever since then. Evangeline knew that she wouldn’t still be here without him, she had died with his blood in her system and if he hadn’t given it to her then she would have remained stuck on the Other Side until she was able to move on. He had given her the chance to live again and even though it had come at the price of her magic, the truth was that she didn’t regret it. Her life had never been the same since then but the truth was that having Kol around made it better and she knew that that wasn’t going to change. “If you say so,” Evangeline teased as Kol said that he had taste. She knew that there were plenty of people who would disagree with him but the truth was that the two of them had similar tastes. Taking a sip of her drink, Evangeline couldn’t help but laugh as he said that perhaps he should have been a bartender and that he would decline to serve anyone with bad taste. “Perhaps I should give you a trial and see how you do. I’m sure Alec would love having you shadow him,” she grinned. “I’m not sure I could have you turning all my customers away though,” she added as she nudged Kol’s arm gently with her own. Looking over at Alec as Kol asked if he could flirt, Evangeline couldn’t help but laugh. “He can, believe it or not,” she grinned. “He actually tried it with me once but he’s not my type,” she added with a shrug as she took another sip of her drink. Alec was a good friend but there had never been anything more than that between them. “Be nice,” she warned although her tone was still somewhat playful. “Takings have gone up since he started working here so I’m not going to argue.” It had been the same at the last place she had owned so having him around definitely helped. “In that case maybe you ought to have some fun and pretend that you did,” Evangeline suggested. She wasn’t too sure what the boy would make of it but she had no doubt that it would be fun to see his expression nonetheless. As Kol spoke again, Evangeline couldn’t help but laugh. “I don’t know, a mini you wouldn’t be the worst thing,” she offered, her expression playful as she looked over at Kol. “I could just see you running around trying to keep up with a mini version,” she teased. It would be amusing to watch, that was for sure. As Kol said that a few did pass, Evangeline nodded. “At least they’re not all lost causes then, that’s good,” she admitted. She knew that teaching was a change of pace for Kol but the truth was that she really was proud of him for giving it a shot and sticking with it. As he asked how much he meant to her, she rolled her eyes once again. “Now wouldn’t you like to know?” she asked evasively as she brought her glass up to her lips and took another sip. Truth be told she wasn’t sure that she was even ready for the full answer to that question just yet so she knew that she couldn’t say it out loud. “Of course I didn’t, you should have seen his face when I told him,” Evangeline laughed. She was only joking of course, she knew the reputation that Kol had and she knew that there were people out there who probably feared him or thought that he was no good but she had seen a different side of him and she knew that she was never going to give up on him. Kol was the one person that she had always been able to count on to be there for her and it was so good to fall back into old habits like this. The smile that formed on Kol’s face was a genuine one and it was enough to make Evangeline’s heart leap. There were times when she wished that he didn’t affect her the way he did but she just couldn’t help it. Nodding as he repeated that he had impeccable timing, she felt her smile return as he said that they couldn’t have her starving. “Definitely not, you know it’s not pretty when I get hungry,” she teased as they headed outside. As Kol suggested they hit up their favourite restaurant, Evangeline’s smile widened. “I was hoping you would say that,” she admitted, pulling her car keys out of her bag when Kol said that he’d walked. As he suggested she give him the keys, however, Evangeline shook her head. “No chance. You know I’ve never been the damsel in distress type, I’ll drive,” she said, unlocking the Aston Martin she’d parked in the owner’s spot that morning and climbing into the driver’s side, waiting for Kol to climb in the passenger’s side before pulling the car out of the parking lot. “So how are things going? Have your family been giving you any trouble?” she asked as she drove, knowing that Kol’s relationship with them could be rocky at times. KOL MIKAELSON

— you did not mean to be cruel but that does not mean you were kind —
KOL SHOOK HIS HEAD ALMOST INSTANTLY BEFORE PARTING HIS LIPS TO SPEAK. "Oh, I'm sure he'll be delighted, but I'd rather give a class to a thousand chattering kids." He offered back with a scoff falling from his lips not long after, though there was a small smile tugging at the corner of his lips. "You're no fun, Eva." He offered back with a shake of his head when Evangeline said that she wasn't sure she could have him turning away all the customers. Kol quirked an eyebrow, through there was a look of distaste on his features as Evangeline revealed that this Alec guy had tried to flirt with her once. Talk about having a nerve, huh? Kol scoffed and lifted his drink to his lips, though that sip tasted awfully bitter. Kol held his hands in mock surrender when Evangeline warned him. "Fine, fine." Kol lowered his hands down not long after and let his elbows rest on the table top.
Kol was starting to hate how their whole conversation revolved around one guy and that guy wasn't even him. You see, he would have liked it if it had been him who was the center of the conversation but it wasn't. It was this Alec guy who apparently tried to flirt with Evangeline before. Kol looked over his shoulder at the other, watching him for a few moments before his attention drifted back to Evangeline. "Isn't the Grill lucky to have him.' Kol offered back with no real sincerity in his tone. He busied himself with another sip from his drink before placing the glass back down.
"Well then, now I know for sure whose class the kids would enjoy more than mine. Why are you working here and not the school again?" Kol questioned when Evangeline made a suggest to prank the kid. The kids would certainly love her spirit more than Kol's because despite his personality out of work, he was stern at work and rarely spent time with the kids cracking jokes. If anything, he was a little too stern with them because he'd caught a few kids flinching at his tone a few times but it helped the information stick, so at least it helped. Kol gave Evangeline a look when she said that a mini version of him wouldn't be the worst thing. "Darling, I'm sure two versions of me would break the world." Kol offered back with a shake of his head following. He was silent for a moment and it almost looked like he was envisioning himself running after a mini version of himself trying to keep up with him. "Absolutely adorable. Makes me want to hold his head under water until the bubbles stop." Kol said with a smile on his lips and turned his attention to find someone already looking at him with a concerned look and upon realizing that he'd been caught staring, the stranger immediately looked away and returned to his drink.
Kol chuckled when Evangeline evaded his question. "Look at you avoiding my question. I'm impressed. Very well then, I'll find out by myself. Makes it a lot more fun that way." Kol said with a small smirk tugging at the corner of his lips. His smirk turned into a grin instead as he listened to Evangeline who played along. "How sorry I am that I've missed such an expression." Kol's grin was still visible on his lips. He knew that her words held no truth because she wouldn't do something like that, but it was still quite fun to joke around.
Soon enough, it was time for them to leave. He chuckled at Evangeline's words before he nodded his head. "You become a different person, that's for certain." He teased with a small smirk left on his lips long after his laughter had subsided. They decided shortly after that they would get food from their favorite restaurant before he made the offer to drive. "Oh, darling, it's not about being a damsel. It was an innocent offer. Though, admit it, you just don't want me to crash your car, do you? I will have you know my driving has improved significantly." Kol pointed out with a small smirk still present on his lips. He soon entered Evangeline's car and settled comfortably in the passenger seat.
His attention drifted to Evangeline as he processed her question. "Everything's alright. I have been mainly occupied with work." Kol revealed with a quick shrug of his shoulders following. "Some parents are still quite concerned about me teaching at the school. But so far, I have not been fired." Kol added a moment later. "Not really, no. Surprisingly, I have not heard any daggering threats from Nik as of yet." Kol responded to her question if his family has been giving him trouble. "Oddly enough, Nik came to visit me at work. We chatted and it felt—" Kol hummed as his mind scrambled for the correct way to explain what their interaction had felt like. "Brotherly." Kol added a moment later, his mind replaying Nik's last visit and how it had made him feel. Though he didn't stay in his thoughts for long. He snapped out of them soon enough and turned his attention back to the road. "Perhaps having Hope did change Nik a little bit." Kol added as an afterthought, his eyes moving from the road to rest on Evangeline. "What about you? How are things going?"

“I’m sure Alec will be gutted, he would have liked having someone as handsome as you around to look at,” Evangeline laughed. She knew that Alec didn’t exactly approve of her friendship with Kol but as far as she was concerned it really wasn’t any of his business. He was practically family to her but Kol had been in her life for much longer than Alec had and she knew that she wasn’t going to just drop him because someone else in her life didn’t like him. Alec didn’t even know him and Kol didn’t know Alec either but she hoped that in time they would get along or at the very least learn to tolerate each other for her sake. “You’re welcome to try your hand at serving behind the bar but I’m afraid you’d have to serve everyone, even if you didn’t like their choices,” she teased. He would certainly be able to get her customers ordering more than she normally would so she knew that she wouldn’t turn down the help if he decided to try his hand at it. “You say it like that but I think you’ll like him if you get to know him,” Evangeline grinned, hoping that those words would prove to be true. She knew that she wanted the most important people in her life to get along but she knew that only time would tell. Both of them could be pretty stubborn when they wanted to be and that was something that was never going to change. She knew that her other friends would be just as protective when they arrived in town but no one was going to convince her to stop spending time with Kol, they had far too much fun together for that and he meant far too much to her. As Kol asked why she was working at the Grill and not teaching, Evangeline couldn’t help but laugh. “I’m not going to lie, I did think about it when the school opened but between here and the group home I have my hands pretty full,” she shrugged. “I’m not sure I’d had the patience to teach anyway, it has been a while since I last helped a new vampire,” she added. It wasn’t something that she tended to do too often but the truth was that she did enjoy it when she did and she was doing her best to help the kids at the group home figure out how to control their abilities. “You’ve always been a pretty good teacher though, you taught me,” she said, nudging his arm with her own as she spoke. “I know you’ll find a way to get through to them.” Kol had his ways and she didn’t doubt that he would be able to extend those to the kids he was teaching as well. The look Kol gave her when she said about a mini version of him running around was enough to make Evangeline laugh. “Personally I think that two versions of you would be pretty cool but you’re probably right, I don’t think the world would be able to cope,” she grinned. As Kol spoke again, Evangeline couldn’t help but laugh once more. “It wouldn’t be that bad,” she grinned, shaking her head in amusement as she realised that someone had overheard and looked pretty concerned about what they were talking about. As Kol teased her about avoiding his question, Evangeline rolled her eyes in amusement. “What can I say, I’ve learned from the best,” she laughed, knowing that Kol could be even more evasive than she was right now when he wanted to be. He was always so careful about who he let get to know the real him and she knew that she was fortunate that she was one of the select few. Kol kept his guard up around just about everyone but she liked to think that he knew that he didn’t have to do that with her. As Kol spoke again, Evangeline’s smile returned. “Sure you are,” she laughed. “You’re right about that, I’m sure even you don’t like me when I’m hungry,” Evangeline nodded, more than happy to continue playing along. Kol had been there for her through so much but she knew that she wouldn’t want to inflict that on him anyway. Evangeline knew that she was definitely ready to have something to eat and she was glad that Kol was as well. She had half expected him to want to try something new for a change but they’d had their favourite restaurant in town for a while and Evangeline knew that she would never pass up the chance to go there with him when it presented itself. They had made some pretty good memories while they were there so far and she knew that she wasn’t going to take that for granted. As Kol said that his offer to drive was an innocent one, Evangeline felt a smile touch her lips as he continued. “I’m sure it has but no one drives this car other than me,” she grinned. “I’ll give you the benefit of the doubt and endure your driving next time if you bring your car though,” she teased, knowing that she would be happy to do that if it would make him happy. Nodding as Kol said that he had mainly been busy with work, Evangeline’s expression softened as he said that some of the parents were still concerned about him teaching at the school. “The Saltzmans knew who you were when they gave you the job, I don’t think they’re the kind of people who would just go ahead and fire you. I’m sure you’re doing a great job,” she said gently. Kol had made a lot of mistakes along the way and he’d done some awful things but he was trying to do better and that really did go a long way as far as she was concerned. As he said that he hadn’t yet heard any threats about being daggered, Evangeline couldn’t deny that she was surprised. “Well that makes a change, perhaps he is finally learning to loosen up a little in his old age,” she offered before her expression softened as he said that they’d talked and it had felt brotherly. “I’m happy for you, really. I know he has wronged you but family is important,” she said gently. Truth be told she wasn’t sure that she would ever be able to forgive Niklaus for the way that he had treated Kol but if Kol wanted to rebuild his relationship with his brother then Evangeline knew that she would always support him. “Perhaps, stranger things have happened,” she nodded, her eyes fixed on the road as she drove. “Things are going alright on my end, work has been keeping me pretty busy and more kids are moving into the group home so I can’t complain. Mystic Falls is proving to be full of surprises it seems.”KOL MIKAELSON

— you did not mean to be cruel but that does not mean you were kind —
KOL FELT A GRIN TUG AT THE CORNERS OF HIS LIPS AS HE LISTENED TO EVANGELINE. "Are you trying to win me over by charming me? Cause I gotta say, it's working." There was a teasing smile that formed on his lips as he spoke, his eyes relaxing on Evangeline again. "Necessary evil, I suppose." Kol pretended to look gutted over having to serve people with terrible taste. "I'm available on the weekends. If it gets too hectic, give me a call. I'll help out." Kol wasn't the type of person to be fazed by juggling two work schedules at once. If anything, a part of him did want to try his hand at being a bartender, he might wind up being exceptionally good at it.
Kol's attention drifted back to Evangeline when she mentioned that he'd like him if he gave himself the chance to get to know him. Truth be told, Kol wasn't the type of person to make friends with ease. If you ask him to count all his friends on his fingers, he'd only lift one finger. Evangeline was his only friend and he never felt the need to go out and make more friends. She was enough for him. She knew him better than most people. Dare he say, she knew him better than most of his family members did. "I think I'm good, darling." Kol offered back with a half-smile resting on his lips. Just having one friend was more than enough for him. His reputation was enough to have people running in the opposite direction anyway.
"It does sound like a rather busy schedule." Running a place as busy as the Grill surely had to be daunting at best. "It is a tedious job, but you would be good at it, Eva. If you can help me, then you can help anyone." Kol's tone lacked any teasing, if anything, his voice was sincere as he spoke, his eyes fixed solely on his close friend. Kol released a small hum at her next words, his shoulders lifting and dropping in a quick shrug. "I'm just teaching them how to not be like me, that's all, darling." Kol lifted his drink to his lips to take a much-needed sip before lowering his drink back down again. "Plus, you were a rather pleasant student to deal with." He added with a small smirk tugging at the corner of his lips.
Kol pointed his index finger in agreement with Evangeline when she agreed that the world wouldn't be able to handle two versions of himself. Though her next words made him pause for a moment. "Oh no, darling, I have managed to charm you to the point where you think that two versions of me existing in the same world wouldn't be that bad. What have I done?" Kol released a dramatic gasp, feigning concern as he looked at Evangeline.
"Consider me very proud. Knew you were one of my best students." Kol said with a small smirk on his lips and despite his frustration that he didn't really know Evangeline's answer, it made it more fun to figure out the answer on his own. So he wasn't too concerned about that for the time being. It didn't take long before they were both heading out of the Grill, his attention drifting to Evangeline when she spoke again making him laugh.
"Again, you're no fun." Kol tsked as if disappointed but in actuality it didn't matter all that much to him if she let him drive or not, at least he'd offered. "Wow, how very kind of you. You sure I won't be putting you out?" Kol rolled his eyes rather fondly before he shook his head, a half-smile visible on his lips.
Kol got in the car not long after and settled rather comfortably in the passenger's seat. Was he doing a great job? He wasn't entirely sure. He was just teaching the kids not to be like him. He was speaking from experience and that was enough to make the kids listen, so that was at least good. "To this day, I still am not sure why they accepted me. With a reputation like mine, I would not have held it against them if they had rejected my job application. Certainly would have been the safest option for the school because some parents did wish to pull their kids out of the school because of me." The Mikaelson family did not have the best reputation and that was mostly because of Kol's own actions. He had done horrible things in the past and only now was he trying to make up for his past actions but he's aware that no matter what he does, it won't be nearly enough. He will have to live with the weight of his own actions for the rest of his life. Kol scoffed at Evangeline's words when she practically called his brother old. He found it a little too amusing.
"I've spent nearly my entire life wishing to be a part of always and forever and now that the offer's on the table, I'm not quite sure what to do." Nik had wanted them to come together as a family and that alone was enough to surprise him. To this day, he's waiting for Nik to utter his first dagger threat just to be sure that what he'd heard was only said in a moment of weakness and not entirely true.
"I couldn't agree with you more. But, I'm glad that things are going alright on your end. Despite how busy your life is. I just hope it doesn't get too busy to the point where you can't hang out with me." Kol said with a half smile visible on his lips as his eyes left the road to settle on Evangeline once again.

“I might be,” Evangeline laughed as Kol asked if she was trying to win him over by charming him. “I knew you could never say no to me,” she added, a teasing grin forming on her face as she looked over at him. He was the one person who had stood by her through everything that had happened and even though others had come into her life since then that she cared about, the truth was that Kol would always have a special place in her heart. She knew that he was different around her to how he was around others, she got to see a different side of him and not a day went by when she wasn’t grateful that she did. She cared about him more than she was willing to admit and if she got the chance to see more of him by offering him some shifts at the Grill then she knew that she would do it without hesitation. “It is,” she agreed as he said that serving people with bad taste was a necessary evil. Evangeline had figured that out a long time ago. She couldn’t deny that she was surprised when Kol said he was available on the weekends and told her to give him a call if it got too hectic and her expression turned thoughtful for a moment. “How would you feel about working Saturday night? One of my bartenders is off sick and I can’t spare anyone else to cover. It’ll just be you and me behind the bar, maybe Hannah too if she can spare the time,” she asked. Normally just two behind the bar would be fine but weekends were notoriously busy so she knew that she would never pass up the chance of having another pair of hands. There were people that she could normally count on to step in at short notice but they all had plans that weekend and she knew that it wouldn’t be fair to ask them to cancel them. “Looks like you’ll just have to make do with me instead then,” Evangeline said, a gentle smile forming on her lips as Kol said that he was good. She knew that he didn’t let people in that easily so she really was glad that he’d taken a chance on her. “It is but you know me, I like keeping busy,” Evangeline shrugged. She had never been good at sitting around doing nothing and that hadn’t changed as the centuries went by. As Kol spoke again she could tell that he was being sincere and her expression turned thoughtful for a moment. “When you put it like that then perhaps I’ll have a chat with Ric and Jenna and see if there’s a position for me,” she nodded. She would be lying if she said that she hadn’t thought about teaching since the school opened but she had worried that she wouldn’t really be able to help the kids as much as they needed. She did like helping people, though, and others could fill in for her at the group home a little more so perhaps she would give it a try. “I’m sure they appreciate it, I know I did,” she said, her smile returning as she took a sip of her drink. “I’m glad I was a good test run for you.”Evangeline’s expression turned to one of amusement at Kol’s reaction to what she’d said. “You compelled me, that’s what you’ve done,” Evangeline teased, knowing that there was no way that was what had actually happened. Kol had never even tried to compel her, at least not that she knew of, and she trusted him not to. “Just kidding. I’m just one of the people that enjoys having you around,” she added, her words sincere as she spoke. “I’ll take that as a compliment. I’m glad I was a good test run for you,” she said, her smile returning as she nudged Kol’s arm playfully with her own before making her way around to the driver’s side of the car and climbing in. “You know me, I’ll endure your driving when it’s your own car I just like mine in one piece,” she teased as she looked over at him. As Kol said that he still didn’t know why he was given the job, Evangeline’s expression turned thoughtful for a moment. “Perhaps the reason they gave you the job is because you applied, you didn’t try and force their hand. That alone shows that you’re trying to change and from what I’ve seen, that goes a long way with them,” she offered. She knew that Kol’s family had a bad reputation but Henrik was working at the school and Kol was doing his best to do better so she wouldn’t be surprised if Ric and Jenna could see that. She had worked with them from time to time when it came to helping the kids who lived at the group home and those at the school who didn’t have families and from what she had seen they were pretty understanding. “Besides, the parents might have wanted to pull their kids out of the school because of you but they didn’t actually do it so I think that says something.”Evangeline’s expression softened as Kol said he wasn’t sure what to do now that the offer was finally on the table. “You should take it,” she said gently. “Don’t get me wrong, your brother is a dick and I’m not sure I’ll ever forgive him for what he put you through but this is your family we’re talking about. I know how long you’ve wanted to be included so don’t let anything stop you now if that’s what you want.” She knew that Kol’s family had wronged him in the past but Kol was trying to change now and it sounded like perhaps his family was as well. “Please just promise me you’ll watch your back. I just got you back, I don’t want your brother daggering you again,” she added as she shot a half smile in his direction. As Kol said he hoped that her life wouldn’t get too busy to the point where she couldn’t hang out with him, Evangeline shook her head. “Trust me, I’ll always have time for you,” she assured him, glancing over in his direction with a smile on her lips before turning her attention back to the road again. It didn’t take long for them to reach the restaurant and Evangeline pulled the car into a space before switching off the engine. “Do you know what you want to have?” she asked as she climbed out of the car, not sure whether he had thought that far ahead.
