– life is tough, my darling, but so are you –
Caroline's life had been a mess for a while now — with her becoming a vampire then a chimera, mixing her blood with that of a weretiger, putting her in the same shoes as her boyfriend, Declan. He'd been a weretiger first, then his blood was mixed with that of a vampire. She never thought she'd find herself a victim of those sick experiments but life had other plans for her. But at least it pushed her in the direction of becoming Declan's girlfriend. They'd been friends for a long, long time before feelings were introduced and in no time, they found themselves in a committed relationship. Caroline had the best support system one could ever ask for so even when things got unbearably tough, she had people by her side, all ready to step in and help her if she asked for their help. Caroline had once thought of herself as a shallow person with neurotic tendencies, but nowadays, her view of herself had changed considerably. Turns out, you get to know yourself a lot more when you are placed in difficult situations.
Caroline and Declan had both started looking for a house near their families and it was a big step, but it was also something that Caroline was really looking forward to. Though it was a task that required a lot of research and Caroline felt like her head was about to explode, so she decided to head over to the Mystic Grill to have a meal and a break. So, she got dressed and left the house. Her mom was already at work but, just in case she got back early (which rarely happened), Caroline left a note to let her mom know where she’d be.
With her purse strap hoisted up her shoulder, Caroline left the house and began heading in the general direction of the Grill. The walk to the Grill only took about four minutes and in no time, she found herself standing in front of a very familiar restaurant. With her palm pressed flat against the door, Caroline pushed it open and stepped inside, a smile already present on her lips. Caroline scanned her surroundings, finding the scene before her to be familiar and inviting. Upon finding an empty table, Caroline began making her way over to it. She let the strap of her purse fall down her shoulder so she could place it on the table upon reaching it. Caroline sat down not long after and it didn't take long for a waiter to come her way with a menu, his smile was a tad bit nervous, but he looked like he was at least trying not to let his nerves control him. Her eyes dropped to the name tag that read the name River and with a gentle smile, she told him she'll flag him down once she's made up her mind on what she wanted to eat or drink. He nodded and excused himself not long after to serve another customer.
In the meantime, Caroline flipped through the menu which kept her occupied for a moment or so before she did as promised and flagged River down to let him know what she wanted to eat. She settled for a burger with a side of fries and a coke. He scribbled it down carefully and took the menu once she handed it over to him. Caroline pulled her phone out to keep herself busy while waiting for her food to be done. She scanned through the houses that were available. Caroline reached out for her purse to pull out her notebook, writing down the first house that caught her attention to discuss it later with Declan. Though she did send him a screenshot nonetheless.
Caroline then began overhearing a conversation that sounded — desperate, for lack of a better word — and looked up. Usually, Caroline wasn't the type to butt in but the guy talking seemed like he was borderline harassing the other person. The smell of alcohol seemed to radiate off of him in waves which made Caroline wrinkle her nose. Caroline couldn't just look the other way and let the drunkard continue harassing the other person so she pushed up from where she was and grabbed her purse and note to head over to the person's table. "Hey, sorry I didn't realize you were sitting here, oh my gosh. I hope I didn't keep you waiting for long." Caroline placed her purse down on the table and sat down, pretending to know the other person. The drunkard looked between them for a moment before he waved his hand off, murmuring something under his breath that Caroline couldn't hear and walked off.
Caroline frowned at the drunk guy before shaking her head. Though it wasn't long before her attention was drifting to the other person. "Sometimes they won't have the nerve to annoy someone who isn't alone." Caroline explained with a sympathetic smile on her lips, explaining why she had pretended to know the other person when they were basically strangers. "Are you okay?"
