━ your sweetness is more cruel than your hurt ━
Hope still wasn't sure what to think of Jed's request to take over his place as the pack Alpha. It was a big thing to ask of her, not only would she be taking his status, but she'd be leading an entire pack that depended on her ━ they'd come to her if they had any questions or concerns, she'd be expected to always know what she was doing and to ensure their safety because each one had some sort of family to return home to after classes. She needs to make sure that they all get back home safe and that she won't lead them into trouble. Hope wasn't a sociable person, she took after both of her parents in that regard, and thus, she doesn't have a lot of friends. Her friends consisted of the squad and that's it. If you ask her to get to know someone outside of the squad, she will struggle too much, so how was she supposed to lead a pack of students she didn't know too well? Sure, she knew their names, but didn't know who they were.
Unlike Jed, who knew them all too well by now especially since he'd been their pack leader since the moment the school had opened its doors. Hope wasn't cut out for such a title, but she couldn't say no, either. With her helping Jed, his status would be transferred to her and if she chose to not lead the pack, then they would be without an Alpha and a pack never lasts for long without a proper Alpha leading them. So, even though she was way out of her comfort zone, she couldn't tell him no from the get-go. She asked him for time to think it through and promised to have an answer when she sees him next which was only in a few days. Barely any time for her to really think it all through.
As much as she wanted to hate him for it, she couldn't. Not when Jed was finally going after what he wanted. If anything, she was happy for him. She just hoped that she won't regret helping him in the future. Carrying the guilt of one hybrid was more than enough for her, honestly. But, with her not having the ability to see into the future and see if her blood will mess up Jed's life, she has no choice but to trust him on this. She could tell that Jed had really thought it through and wasn't making the decision on a whim.
Hope knew that she can't make the decision on her own right away, not without some help first. She couldn't think of a better person to talk to about the whole thing other than Josie. They had made it a habit of theirs to talk to each other whenever things got tough and Josie had been honest with her when she'd told her about Lizzie hogging most of the spotlight with their parents before promising Hope to at least try to talk to her parents about everything she was feeling. So, she knew it was only fair to reach out to Josie when she was having a hard time, too. She had sent Josie a text from the comfort of her own bed asking her if she could come over tonight.
Earlier today, she had tried to take out her anxiety on a punching bag and it had helped, for the most part but then her arms got sore after a long time of just continuously punching the bag and it wasn't long before the sand was pouring out of the bag after her last punch had caused a rip in the bag, so that was when she'd decided to call it a day and go take a shower where she spent nearly forty-five minutes under the steady stream of hot water before she finally got out, her mind still racing with all of these scary possibilities of the pack rejecting her as their pack Alpha or still wanting Jed despite him not being an Alpha anymore. Hope was worried she'd fail miserably long before trying or that she'd be damn awful at trying.
Even thinking about that now still made her feel sick to her stomach as she watched the pattern of the flames inside of her fireplace, her arms wrapped around her legs and her legs brought closer to her chest with a blanket thrown over her. She felt cold despite the room being pretty warm. She knew it was just her anxiety making her feel that way and even though she longed to stomp on her anxiety, her anxiety was the one stomping on her right now, repeatedly so. Hope, who always seemed to calm and acted so bravely, was scared for the first time in a long, long time and that feeling sucked.

So much was changing right now and Josie knew that she needed to support the people she loved now more than ever. Jed had decided that he wanted to become a hybrid and he had decided that he wanted Hope to take his place as Alpha if she was up for it. It was a lot to take in on top of everything that had already happened but Josie knew that her brother’s reasons for wanting to become a hybrid were sound. Of course it would all come down to whether or not Hope was willing to help him and Josie hoped that her girlfriend would say yes. Josie knew that she would outlive her parents and most of her siblings but the idea of having Jed there with her even after everyone else was gone was something that she wanted more than she could put into words. He wanted to become immortal so that he could be with Ben without having to worry about time tearing them apart one day and that was something that Josie could definitely understand because she had thought about the same thing with Hope. It was scary knowing that the person you loved was or would become immortal while you remained the same and Josie knew that she would have made the decision to become a heretic in a heartbeat when Hope activated her vampire side so she really couldn’t blame her brother for wanting to do the same. Jed also wanted to become stronger so that he could protect the people he loved and that was something that Josie was pretty sure everyone in their lives would understand. Whether or not Hope would decide to take over as Alpha was a different matter entirely, though. Josie had promised that she wouldn’t say anything to Hope so that Jed could have the chance to speak to her about it himself but the truth was that keeping it from her girlfriend wasn’t easy at all. She and Hope had always told each other everything with the exception being when they were trying to hide their feelings for each other so keeping this to herself felt wrong but she knew that it was important that Jed and Hope talk things through so she had known that she’d needed to. It wasn’t unusual for Hope to text Josie and ask her over or for Josie to do the same but this time as her phone chimed with a message and she saw that it was from Hope, it felt different and she couldn’t help but wonder if perhaps Jed had asked Hope. There was only one way to find out, though, and Josie didn’t hesitate in texting her girlfriend back saying that she would right over. Her dad was at home with her and insisted in giving her a ride so it didn’t take her too long to get to Hope’s home. She didn’t have to wait long after knocking to be allowed into the house and Josie made her way straight up to Hope’s room, knowing that that was where she was most likely to be. Sure enough she found her girlfriend sitting in front of the fire with her arms wrapped around her legs and a blanket thrown over her. Hope looked so vulnerable like that and it was enough to make Josie’s heart ache because the truth was that she wasn’t used to seeing her like that at all. Without saying a word she moved onto the bed so she was sitting next to Hope and wrapped her arms around her girlfriend. “Hey, are you okay?” she asked gently as she let her head rest against Hope’s. ━ your sweetness is more cruel than your hurt ━
Hope hated the uncertainty of it all, hated not knowing whether she would do a good job at being the Alpha of the pack or not. She wished that the answers were already written for her so that it would at least be a little easier for her to make the decision but unfortunately, it didn't work that way. The answers were all unwritten and could only be written once she has made the decision. She will only know whether she would be a good Alpha or not by taking the first step. Claiming the status for herself. But for the first time in a long, long time, Hope was scared. She was scared that she would lead the pack into its own demise and she would be the reason behind the fall of it. She'd have people depending on her to make the right choices at all times and would pay the price if she ended up making the wrong one. Hope worried her bottom lip between her teeth, lost in her thoughts that seemed to run miles ahead, determined to not let her catch a break, not even for a second.
Though her salvation came in the form of Josie entering her bedroom, Hope finally seemed to blink out of her thoughts and her eyes relaxed on Josie, her lips pulled into a weak smile that barely reached her eyes and before she could even say anything, Josie's arms were wrapped around her. As always, Josie seemed to instantly catch onto the fact that Hope wasn't doing well before she could even put her own emotions into words.
Hope moved her arms from underneath the blanket to wrap them around Josie, returning the hug as she tucked her face into the crook of Josie's neck, taking a moment to just let herself melt into Josie's embrace as her lips parted to let out a soft sigh. Josie's question soon followed and she nodded her head gently once. "I am now. You have no idea how much I needed this." Hope admitted as she closed her eyes for a moment, remaining silent for a little bit of time just so she could fully enjoy the feeling of having Josie close like this. It brought her warmth and security. Hope didn't feel like she had to worry about anything in Josie's embrace. Hope took in a deep breath before letting it out softly as she slowly pulled back from the hug, her eyes meeting Josie's. "I've just been thinking about something." Admitting that she was feeling something was a bit difficult for Hope, she didn't always know how to readily talk about her feelings and instead chose to bury them all deep within, knowing that it won't do her any good in the long run when she explodes, but she felt like she could at least try with Josie, no matter how hard it was to talk about her feelings.
Hope parted her lips before pressing them together again, unsure where to start. Though she decided that lifting up the blanket so that Josie can join her under it was a good place to start. She let the blanket drape over Josie's shoulders as well before wrapping it around them to cover their fronts as well, letting the warmth of the blanket surround them from every direction. Underneath the blanket, Hope began seeking Josie's hand, holding it in her own, her fingers absentmindedly toying with Josie's, a small habit of hers. "Jed asked me to take his place as pack Alpha." Hope finally spoke up, her eyes relaxing on Josie once more. "I don't know if I can do it, Jo. I hate having the spotlight on me and I'm sure you know this by now, but I'm not exactly a sociable person either, I━" Hope struggled for a moment, shaking her head.
"I can't see myself being a good Alpha for them. What if I lead them the wrong way? What if they reject me as their Alpha? I've never felt so ━ uncertain before and it's a really weird feeling. I don't know if I can do it."

Josie had always known that she would end up becoming a heretic so that she could be with Hope one day but the truth was that it had happened much sooner than she had thought that it ever would. Most of her family were mortal and even though she knew that she would still have Elena when all was said and done considering that she was a vampire the truth was that she had hated the idea of losing everyone else. Learning that Jed wanted to become a hybrid was a surprise but once that passed she had realised that she couldn’t be happier about it. He might not be related to her by blood but that had never mattered to Josie, he was still her brother and she loved him so just knowing that another member of the family would still be around was a huge relief. Of course that brought other things to think about with it as well like how it would even work but Jed had an answer for that as well – he wanted Hope to take his life so that his Alpha status would pass to her. Josie knew that her girlfriend had the makings of a great Alpha but she also knew that Hope lacked confidence at times. It was something that they both shared and Josie wasn’t sure which way Hope’s decision would go but either way she knew that she would support her no matter what. She had promised Jed that she wouldn’t say anything to Hope since the request had needed to come from him but that wasn’t easy at all. The moment Hope’s text had arrived Josie had suspected she knew what it was about and she hadn’t hesitated in heading over to Hope’s home. It was so easy for her to wrap her arms around her girlfriend the moment she saw her, Hope was clearly struggling with something and Josie knew that she wanted to do whatever she could in order to help. Soon enough Hope’s arms were wrapping around her in return and Josie held her there for a while, hoping that the comfort of her embrace would help Hope a little the same way that Hope’s always did for her. As Hope said she was alright now, Josie felt a smile touch her lips. “You know I’m only a call or a message away whenever you need me,” Josie assured her, leaning forward and pressing a gentle kiss to Hope’s forehead. They were best friends before they got together and they still were now but they were also so much more than that. She knew that Hope didn’t always find it easy to talk about her feelings, that was another thing that they had in common, but both working on getting better at that and they were helping each other with it as much as they could. Now it was her turn to help Hope and Josie’s eyes met hers as she said that she’d been thinking about something. “About what?” she asked gently, hoping that talking about it would help Hope. Josie moved closer to Hope as he lifted the blanket and wrapped it around them both and she wrapped one arm around Hope while Hope held her other hand. Just the fact that Hope’s fingers toyed with hers was enough to bring a smile to Josie’s lips, it was something that Hope did quite often and Josie always liked it when she did. As Hope finally spoke, Josie’s expression softened. She had thought that perhaps Jed had talked to Hope about what he wanted her to do and it looked like he had which definitely explained a lot. “I really wish you saw yourself the way I do because I know that you can do anything if you put your mind to it,” she said gently, lifting their joined hands and pressing a light kiss to Hope’s knuckles. “You’re right, you’re not really a sociable person and you don’t like being in the spotlight either but that’s not such a bad thing. You’re strong and loyal, you always look out for your friends and you’re someone who can always be counted on when things get tough. Those are all great qualities for an Alpha,” she added, her free hand rubbing Hope’s arm gently. “They’d be silly to reject you. I know you can do it but it comes down to whether it is something that you want to do,” said, her eyes searching hers as she spoke. “I’m sure Jed will understand if you don’t want to but is that something you’ve thought about?” she asked, not sure whether Hope had only been thinking about whether she could do it rather than whether she actually wanted to.
